Nearly $4.4 million has been made available to replace 2.7 kilometres of 80-year-old water pipe and construct a closed reservoir for the Arrow Creek water system. Federal Industry Minister James Moore made the announcement July 8 on the Creston Town Hall lawn. The project will be funded equally by the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia and the Regional District of Central Kootenay under the Small Communities Fund. “We are proud to invest in projects

like upgrading the drinking water infrastructure in Central Kootenay that will benefit our community by improving much needed local infrastructure,” Moore said. “Our government’s commitment to municipalities, big and small, has never been stronger. Through the New Building Canada Plan’s Small Communities Fund, we are investing in priority infrastructure projects that have a positive and lasting impact on the quality of life of British Columbia’s residents while helping create jobs and economic growth.” SEE WATER, PAGE 2

in the B3 category (about 10 per cent vision). His score of 179 pushed him ahead of runner-up Reg Opersko (with coach Hank Peekstok) of Waterford, Ont., who finished with 184. Last year, he placed second in the world, Australian and Canadian blind golf championships, and competed last month on a North American team in Italy, but there was something different about Sunday’s win at home. “It feels great and really special to win a championship on my home course, and to share the win and the overall experience with the many members that were there cheering me on and supporting blind golf in general,” said Douma, who has Stargardt disease, an incurable and rare genetic juvenile form of macular degeneration, affecting central fine vision.

Joining Moore for the announcement were Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks, RDCK chair Karen Hamling, Area B director Tanya Wall, Area C director Larry Binks and Creston Mayor Ron Toyota. “On behalf of the regional District of Central Kootenay, I express our sincere gratitude to Minister James Moore, MP David Wilks and the Government of Canada and to the Province of BC for each providing one third of the funding for the replacement of the Arrow Creek mainline pipe that distributes water to Erickson and the Town of Creston,”

LocaL News Hamling said. “The grant will help us to replace 80-year-old concrete and asbestos pipes that are leaking. In turn, it will mitigate water loss and provide users in Erickson and the town of Creston with a more sustainable system.” The project will replace the existing open water reservoir with a closed cell system, the Erickson closed reservoir. The project also includes the renewal of 2.7 kilometres of water distribution pipe that is in poor condition and prone to frequent leaks. Once completed, this project will minimize health risks from water contamination and contribute to more reliable potable water delivery to Central Kootenay area residents. “Today’s announcement will improve the health of residents, NOW OPEN MONDAYS 250-428-SHOW (7469) Showtimes: 7:30pm

Wynndel gallery displaying several artists’ work BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Tourists and locals alike will delight in Wynndel’s Kunze Gallery, where paintings, pottery, sculpture and photography by local artists are on display in a bright and welcoming venue. Formerly known as Galvanized Gallery — “People kept asking to see the metalwork,” Sandy Kunze laughs — Kunze Gallery now features Kunze’s own work and that of a number of her artistic circle of friends. In a building originally constructed to be her work studio, works are brilliantly displayed, large and small pieces mixed to invite visitors to linger and enjoy. A small gift shop is close by, connected to the gallery with an outdoor living area. Sheltered from wind and sun, the space features seating and comfy views of some of Kunze’s more eclectic creations. Below the gallery is another covered deck that affords a panoramic view of the Creston Valley. “I want this gallery to be a place where people who make art or just love art can relax, chat and enjoy what this beautiful valley has to offer,” Kunze said. She has worked close with friend and artist Maggie Leal-Valias, whose new works are large format altered photographs printed on aluminum. She uses her own photography, altering it beyond recognition and inviting viewers to invent their own interpretation. Leal-Valias will be on hand most days at the The work of several artists can be seen at Wynndel’s Kunze Gallery. gallery, along with summer student Sophia Short. The elegant fabric creations of Anne Fetterly, who explores materials and processes associated with natural dyes, silk, cotton and repurposed materials, are placed throughout the gallery, as are Kootenay Lake potter Heath Carra’s geometric forms that emerge from his background in drafting and sheet metal layout. Cory Cannon, who lives and works nearby, has contributed some of his airbrushed pieces, and wrought iron sculptures by Andrew Bibby help introduce an entirely new dimension to the gallery. A number of paintings by Lister artist James McDowell hang on the walls, proof that he never gets tied down to any one style. Nora McDowell’s popular decorative knit tea cozies brighten the gift shop. Once again this summer, Kunze has organized several art and wine bus tours that take guests to two wineries and the galleries and studios of a variety of artists. For more information or to book seats visit www.kunzegallery.com. Kunze Gallery is open through September from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dozens of out-of-town visitors attended the event co-ordinated by Douma and a team of volunteers. The action got started on Friday, with a team Stableford event for golfers, sponsors, coaches, club members and volunteers. Most visitors, Douma said, stayed at the Creston Hotel and Downtowner Motor Inn, appreciating the chance to be downtown. “Everyone loved walking up and down the streets,” he said. “They really loved the community and the stores and the people.” The Creston Golf Club’s course, staff and volunteers also impressed the out-of-towners. “As far as the entire competition, the most exciting part was that everything was well received and appreciated by our blind golfers,” said Douma. “Everyone was totally impressed with our golf course, its members and how well organized the event was. … We met and exceeded all expectations for this event. “Thanks to Creston, our local sponsors, Rotary members, Lions Club members, the Creston Golf Club and its loyal membership for volunteering and hosting this great event at our club.”

Thx, but no thanks

My two-year-old grandson does not use contractions. His mother will ask, “Lachlan, do you want a fish stick?” He will answer, “No, I do not.” It’s a bit Yoda-ish, but maybe he is ahead of the rest of us, because apparently the apostrophe is in jeopardy. Mary Norris, a copy editor for the New Yorker magazine, says: “The apostrophe is under a lot of stress, largely because in texting you have to switch screens to insert it, and who has time for that?” The English language is flexible, one reason it is today among the three most widely spoken in the world. How much more flexible can it get? A lot more, it appears. Already there is “wer r u?” and “thx” and “lol,” which I thought meant “lots of love,” but no, it does not. Will we soon be writing contractions as dont and cant and wouldnt? Spelling correctly may be in jeopardy. As we all know, English spelling is full of rules and inconsistencies. But, wait, now there is the autocorrect feature for your computer device. (Ms. Norris abhors autocorrect, although she admits she is free to disable it.) I suggest there is a certain entertainment value. In one of my recent emails “Nanoose” (the bay) became “nanosecond”. My son-in-law, texting his mother about taking a certain photo, wrote, “I can’t get a good shot shooting into the light.” You can guess how the autocorrect feature improved on that, and the “correction” slipped through. Using the words “text” as a verb and “autocorrect” as a noun are examples of another transition happening

within the English language. Nouns become verbs and verbs become nouns with alacrity, it seems. Annoying new words accost us: a panelist on a CBC news program uses “incentivize” when discussing how to

The Voice of Experience Betsy Brierley motivate people to exercise more. “Problematize” is a verb used in academic circles. (I am not making this up. We may all now problematize the issue of people who text.) A friend who also gets huffy when encountering grammar gaffs told me she almost drove through a red light while noting the improper use of an apostrophe in a very large soap ad. It was “insensibly possessive,” she said. “I was hoping that some marketing firm was getting royal you-knowwhat from an irate VP out in Mississauga. But I bet not. I bet about 14 people noticed... and like me they fumed and didn’t know what to do about it.” Who really cares? Is not learning spelling and grammar rules akin to not learning math processes because the calculator will do it for you? In this age do we need to know the reasoning behind multiplying and spelling or simply how to apply them for what needs to be accomplished? Cursive writing is taught only at the teacher’s discretion in schools today. Is it neces-

sary to know how to write with a cursive hand when daily lists and notes can be made on a phone and a cheque can be deposited with an online photo? Isn’t efficiency the point? In spite of the English language being cluttered, ambiguous, irrational, irksome, as well as hard to spell, I will always be one of the 14 who notice and object when it is abused. It may just be esthetics; if you are used to seeing something a certain way for decades, adjustments can be troubling. Perhaps objecting merely problematizes the issue. It has taken centuries for English to develop to this point, through the merging of old languages, influences of the church, the Industrial Revolution, science, other cultures, emerging issues, computer technology, not to mention linguistic elements such as consonant and vowel shifts, and inevitable errors and omissions along the way. Words and punctuation become accepted because people use them. What goes into the Oxford English Dictionary with its 20 volumes or into a 600-page slang dictionary depends on us. Surely, there will be a texting shorthand dictionary out there somewhere. We have always been the enablers of change to the language, and change it will. I myself have begun to say “No, I do not” to express with the authority of a two-year-old that I don’t enjoy fish sticks. Betsy Brierley lives beside Kootenay Lake. She used to write for the Advance a long time ago. The Voice of Experience is a column co-ordinated by the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.

People power keeps Jumbo wild

After 25 years, our region received some very good news. Jumbo Glacier Resort lost its environmental certificate that allowed it to build a megaresort on Jumbo Glacier. The Kootenays responded with a big cheer. We had been clear for more than two decades that this proposed resort was a bad idea and unwanted. We didn’t like the resort because we have a problem with skiing or snowboarding. The Kootenays has one of the highest concentration of ski resorts and back country operations in North America. We love to ski! I’m a snowboarder and most of my friends can be found on the hill when the snow flies. So we know a good ski resort from a bad one, and JGR was destined to be a bad one. We certainly don’t have a problem with economic development. Kootenay people are amazing entrepreneurs, ever expanding the tourism industry and all the other industries that make us such a special part of the world. But not everything is going to fit in our economic strategy, and JGR didn’t fit. We believe it imperative that we protect our environment for generations to come. In an era of climate change, skiing on a glacier just doesn’t make sense. We need it to provide clean fresh water to drink, irrigate farms, stock our lakes and generate carbon-free electricity. Along with protecting our water sources, we protect our wildlife, and the Jumbo Valley is home to a genetically important grizzly bear population, as well as many other species that would have been negatively impacted by a resort.

We also know that building respectful relationships with First Nations is the way forward. Reconciliation will never happen if governments and communities do not recognize and value the spiritual traditions and culture of aboriginal peoples.

In Your Corner Michelle Mungall The Ktunaxa name for Jumbo is Qat’muk. It is home of the grizzly bear spirit, and is a sacred place in their traditions. Despite aboriginal peoples’ long experiences of being oppressed, beaten, denigrated and mocked for sharing their traditions, the Ktunaxa gathered their courage to let the world know what Qat’muk meant to them and that a resort there would be devastating. Words cannot express the honour it has been to bring these voices to the legislature and pressure the Liberal government to keep Jumbo wild. They ignored us in 2004 when they allowed the resort proponents to proceed by issuing the necessary environmental certificate. They ignored us in 2009 when they automatically renewed the certificate. They ignored us when they came up with the crazy scheme of setting up and funding a fake town to issue permits for the resort.

But we couldn’t be ignored forever. Major investors stayed away. The proponent failed. We never stopped. And it made the difference. The proponents now say they might come back with a new design that won’t require an environmental certificate to proceed. I doubt they have the financial backing to do this, but even if they do, they would do better to read the law in full and consider it. The law is clear that the minister may designate any project for an environmental review, particularly if there are potential “adverse environmental, economic, social, heritage or health” effects from the proposal. Knowing what we know about the potential for adverse effects in all of these criteria, it is wishful thinking to suggest that a smaller scale resort for this area wouldn’t require an environmental assessment. With that it mind, the proponents might want to reconsider their stubbornness, cut their losses and move on because the Kootenays will keep Jumbo wild. We will continue to sign petitions, put bumper stickers on cars, attend rallies, write letters, donate, go to court, elect representative who work to keep Jumbo wild and talk to other people about Jumbo if that’s what it takes. But friends, I think we can celebrate the amazing work we have done and the results we have achieved. Jumbo is wild and it is going to stay that way. Michelle Mungall is the member of the legislative assembly for the Nelson-Creston provincial riding, and is the Opposition critic for social development.

Fans of Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird have either been eagerly awaiting publication of an “earlier” novel by the author or dreading it. After its publication in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird became one of the most popular and best read novels of its generation. Lee, like Catcher in the Rye novelist J.D. Salinger, spent much of her life thereafter being hounded to produce more work. She also won a Pulitzer Prize for the book. The voice of Scout, a young girl telling the story of being raised by her father, the lawyer Atticus Finch, has become familiar to a half-century of readers. And the movie version, starring Gregory Peck as the kind and principled southern lawyer, enhanced Lee’s reputation as having created a novel for its time. Race relations and the civil rights of black Americans were of major interest in the 1960s and To Kill a Mockingbird illustrated the horrors of bigotry and celebrated a character who defended, albeit fruitlessly, an innocent black man in a deeply prejudiced community. Like many, my interest was piqued last year with the report that a new Harper Lee novel was about to be published. The publisher had to get court approval that Lee, now 89, was mentally sound enough to give permission for the publication of Go Set a Watchman. That Go Set a Watchman apparently sat untouched for more than half a century was enough to raise concerns about it and whether Lee had ever really intended it to be published. Current speculation suggests that To Kill a Mockingbird evolved from the original Go Set a Watchman, with the young novelist being heavily influenced by an edi-

tor at Lippincott over a period of several years. Go Set a Watchman is a third-party narration, unlike the first-person voice in the form of Scout who, in the newly released book, is now a young adult living

Lorne Eckersley in New York. In it, she returns to her hometown to visit her dad. Atticus is an out-and-out bigot, not the voice of reason and justice that was so deeply celebrated in the movie (which placed a much greater emphasis on the trial). With Lee’s original editor long dead, and the writer herself at an advanced age, the relationship between the two novels will likely never be determined to anyone’s satisfaction. But it certainly raises questions about the control that an editor has over a writer. Did Lee submit Go Set a Watchman (it’s a phrase from the Bible book of Isaiah) and then get bullied into making it a more palatable story for the time? There is no denying that an editor’s role is to work to help polish the author’s work and make it as appealing as possible to readers, which also makes it more saleable and, in the end, more profitable. But it is also possible that an easily influenced young writer might be pushed into making changes that stray far from her original intent on the assumption that to do so is part of what it takes to get published.

As I have read through reviews and reader comments in recent days it is apparent that Go Set a Watchman as it was originally written would not have been as well received had it been published circa 1960, and certainly not to the extent that To Kill a Mockingbird was. Told through a voice of innocence, Mockingbird acknowledged racism in the south, but offered a ray of hope in the character of Finch, who defended a black man in the face of prevailing public opinion. Once Gregory Peck put his own stamp on the role, Atticus Finch became a literary icon, a character who promised a brighter future for America. By contrast, Go Set a Watchman depicts Finch as yet another bigot in a community of bigots in a region where black people were often seen more as cheap labour and less as human beings. A novel about a bigoted lawyer is, as a review in the Guardian points out, “much less likeable and school-teachable.” Like most people of my era, I first came across To Kill a Mockingbird as an English class reading assignment. I think it is highly unlikely that we would have studied Go Set a Watchman. The former provided the basis for discussion about race issues but, with Atticus Finch at its heart, also offered hope for a generation that valued hope above all else. While there is the chance that Go Set a Watchman could well be the result of Harper Lee once again being manipulated by the publishing world, I look forward to reading it. If nothing else, it is a rare opportunity for a reader to get a glimpse of something closer to an author’s original intent for her first novel. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

All ages have different needs

We had the first of a few summer visits at home by children last week as they try to escape the turmoil and recession in Alberta. The variation from previous years is that they now bring brand new grandchildren, which is pretty cool. For a while. One of the hits of the Creston Valley is getting them to come to the pool to escape the heat, and the ducky swim in particular was an all time favourite. The praise for our community complex is high and wins out yet again over some pretty big facilities in Edmonton that they have gone to, but here in the valley, we knew that already. While I try and have an appreciation for our patrons at the community complex that have babies or toddlers, having one live with you for a week or so raises the awareness a notch or two as far as what it truly takes to stickhandle one or two of these around in your day-today living. I have found that when you are a parent, you simply adapt and live day to day with all the requirements it takes to raise a family. As you get older you tend to forget about being perpetually tired for a few years, punctuated by intense bursts of adrenaline as

junior bounces down the stairs or heads for the stove. It provides great reflection material on how much energy and dedication it took, and still takes, to raise children. You also get to have those

From the Centre Neil Ostafichuk flashback moments when you take a slurp of coffee, and in that time junior has made it to the stereo and managed to lever off three knobs and you can only find two. I in fact still have my old stereo — missing a knob — where his father did exactly the same thing three decades ago. Luckily, all the current knobs have been retrieved. Those moments help with visualizing the use of the community complex from all ages’ point of view, whether its adding toddler chairs in the aquatic changerooms to help parents keep track of one while they juggle another

or making sure change tables are placed in appropriate washrooms, right through to trying to eliminate trip hazards or other tweaks geared to improving our seniors’ visits. I believe that’s called empathy and I had a pretty healthy dose last week. We are currently fixing up the east wall of the arena as it was the only portion that wasn’t touched during the major renovation for budget and timing reasons. The inside has been partially insulated and plywooded, which will provide a solid base for the advertising signage. Next week, we will see the same company that installed the original walls return to do the same to the east side of the complex; raising the insulation value and building envelope standard to the same level as everywhere else in the complex, most likely providing some energy savings as we keep the outside out and the inside in. While we should be in a cooler stretch of weather, don’t forget you can always come down to the complex get cooled off; either in the water or simply sitting for a bit in our main lobby. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Faeries’ Landing offering art at Kootenay Bay (Clockwise from left) Cherie Rensing in her Kootenay Bay store, Faeries’ Landing; mixed media goblet by Win Dinn; scroll saw woodwork by Tamara Krisman; earrings by Susan Snead; gnome home by Earl Dean.

BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

For a few decades, travellers waiting for the Kootenay Lake ferry have appreciated having food and snacks available just off the terminal’s parking lot. Now, they can enjoy even more, with a wide selection of art available at Faeries’ Landing, an art market and bistro in the location known for years as Fairy Treats and, in 2013, Kootenay Cove Café. Cherie Rensing opened the Kootenay Bay store in May, having run a test market there for 11 days last year. Through that, she learned food was key to the location’s success — and it had to be good, reasonably priced and fast. Ice cream was also important. “I was told if I didn’t have ice cream that I would be run out of town,” said Rensing, who moved to Creston in 2010. “The interesting thing is I’ll have a grandma, a mom and child come in and the grandma will say, “I brought your dad here when he was a kid. “I really discovered the long-term branding. The importance of it took me by surprise.” Rensing sought the mentorship of a 40-year food service veteran in Calgary to make sure the light meals and snacks at Faeries’ Landing would satisfy customers — and then set out to bring in work by over 30 artists from Creston to Salmon Arm. “I work hard at bringing the unusual and unique in,” she said, noting that she does her best to keep the selection fresh. “We get locals coming in saying, ‘What have you got that’s new?’ ” Creston Valley artists are behind most of what’s on display, with artwork by, among others, Guy Hobbs, Win Dinn, Leone Lund, Kerry Hobbs, Eileen Hirota, Darryl Johnson, Aaron Weitman, Jan MacDonald and Trezlie Brooks, and edibles by Quintessence Cookies and Ambrosia Artisan Chocolates. Rensing’s own Celtic Fire Design work is on display, as well. She’s been making glass beads for about 10 years, after dabbling in many mediums throughout her life. “I was making jewelry as a lark, just buying beads and stringing them together,” said Rensing. She used to work 70 hours a week managing cellphone stores and corporate sales teams — but a beadmaking class changed everything. “I made my first bead and was 100 per cent completely addicted,” said Rensing. With woodwork, watercolours, metalwork, body products, textiles and more available at Faeries’ Landing — not to mention live music on Sunday afternoons — visitors and locals alike can easily get a sense of the valley’s artistic diversity. And they’ll be able to find the artists, too, with a map of Kootenay artists in the works. “We present ourselves as ambassadors for our artists and art,” said Rensing, who, along with her staff, is happy to pass on stories and educate others about the artists and artwork. “Nothing here is needed,” she said. “It’s all wanted. It’s our job to connect emotions with art.” Faeries’ Landing is open seven days a week until the end of September.

With no fall zone around equipment and with a child’s swing held together with duct tape, the playground at Crawford Bay Park is in need of an upgrade. “It’s a pretty unloved place right now,” said Ellie Reynolds of the East Shore Alliance Supporting Early Years

(EASEY). “It’s not a functional playground.” Together with her husband Charles, Ellie is co-ordinating the fundraising of $40,000 to bring new life to that section of the park by creating a natural playground. “It’s less about expensive equipment and more about interesting design,” said Ellie. “Instead of having steps going up to a slide, you put the slide on

an embankment.” The playground is designed to include “real things”, she said, such as boulders and logs — even a 1933 cedar tree trunk that split into several tops donated by Gray Creek Store. “They have to engage their entire brain to deal with balance and adjusting to different heights,” said Ellie. “We’re continually doing research,” said Charles. “We want it to be as safe as possible.” The playground will also include a bicycle path connecting various areas, a water feature — “Kids can play with water for hours,” Ellie said — and music-making pieces, such as bongos. “You can’t make a bad sound,” she said. “They give children a positive experience with music.” The upgrade, Ellie said, is about 20 years overdue, and two previous committees have tried unsuccessfully to fundraise to upgrade the playground. But this idea is catching on, with $10,000 having been raised in a few months. Part of the appeal is that it’s being designed with more than just kids in mind — space will be included for parents, making the playground a perfect place for families, and even a day trip destination for Creston families. “Our hope is that it becomes a hub for young families,” said Ellie. “We’re trying to consider the needs of everyone,” added Charles. Kootenai Squadron air cadets practice flying

Creston cadets look on as Maj. Kevin DeBiasio shows them the Cessna loaned by the Trail Flying Club.

ROYAL CANADIAN AIR CADETS

On June 13, 11 cadets of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets 904 Kootenai Squadron went familiarization flying from the Creston Valley Airport. The aircraft flown by Maj. Kevin DeBiasio of Regional Cadet Air Operations (Pacific) was a Cessna 172 provided by the Trail Flying Club and paid for by the local squadron sponsoring committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada’s British Columbia committee. Before the flight, the cadets received a briefing on the aircraft, navigation and flight safety. Once in the air, the cadets flew north on Kootenay Lake and returned to Creston. The cadet in the front seat had a chance to fly the aircraft after a demonstration on the aircraft controls. The cadets have now completed their training for the year and will start a new training year in September. Over the summer, selected cadets will be attending training courses at cadet training centres located in Vernon, Victoria and Comox, as well as other locations across the country. The Royal Canadian Air Cadets, in partnership with the Air Cadet League of Canada and the Department of National Defence, has been training youth in Canada for over 70 years. The cadets are the largest government funded youth program in Canada, with over 50,000 participants across Canada. The Royal Canadian Air Cadets accepts youth between the ages of 12-18 who have a desire to learn more about the air element of the Canadian Forces, wish to develop the attributes of leadership and good citizenship and who wish to promote physical fitness. While the program is military based, there is no obligation for a cadet to

CRESTON VALLEY THUNDER CATS

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats are pleased to announce the addition of Creston defenceman Jake Livingstone for the 2015-16 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) season. Livingstone will join the Thunder Cats full-time after he affiliated with the team last season while playing for Creston’s midget rep program. As a 15-year-old, Livingstone practiced with the Thunder Cats on a daily basis while suiting up in three regular season games and picking up two assists. “Jake is a smart, puck-moving defenceman who has all the tools to move up the ladder and play a high level of hockey,” said head coach Jeff Dubois. “He sees the ice really well and makes a great first pass, and he showed when he got into the lineup as an AP last season that he could make things happen with the puck on his stick.” Jake will join second-year forward Logan Wullum as Creston’s locally developed representation on the Thunder Cats. With his commitment, Livingstone follows in the footsteps of older brother Colby, whose two seasons with the Thunder Cats led to a year of Junior A in Amherst, N.S., and a recent trade back to the BCHL’s Trail Smoke Eaters. “I’m very excited to play for my hometown team,” said Livingstone, who describes himself as having a high hockey IQ and good offensive instincts. “I’ve grown up looking up to the players here and it’s been a longtime goal of mine to play for the Thunder Cats. “I’m looking forward to improving as a hockey player and a person next season and I’d like to help the Thunder Cats win a KIJHL championship.” Livingstone will join his new teammates for Thunder Cats main camp beginning Aug. 21 at the John Bucyk Arena. The Thunder Cats are also losing a defenceman, with Maverick Lynes of Sherwood Park, Alta., committed to play Junior A hockey with the Selkirk Steelers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for the 2015-16 season. Lynes spent the past two seasons with the Thunder Cats and emerged during the 2014-15 campaign as one of the top blueliners in the KIJHL. His 23 assists led all Creston defenceman while he finished one point behind Austin Steger for the lead at his position. He also logged substantial icetime against the opposition’s top players and was a fixture on the team’s power play and penalty kill. Following this season, he was the recipient of the team’s top defenceman award. “Maverick was a key player for us in all situations and a guy who is 100 per cent ready to move up and thrive at a higher level,” said Dubois. “His skating and mobility are exactly what coaches look for, and he’s developed the defensive side of his game to the point where he was a top shut-down guy in our league. We’re very excited for him to have the opportunity to play for a very good program in Selkirk.” The Steelers, located 35 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, are one of the MJHL’s premier teams. Over the past 12 seasons, the club has won two league championships, advanced to the league finals on two other occasions and captured three regular season titles. “Creston was a great place to play,” says Lynes. “I was lucky to learn from great coaches both years and they helped me improve my skills and develop as a player. I’m also very grateful to my billets, the Woods family, who made the transition of moving away from home a lot easier. They made sure the only thing I needed to focus on was hockey. “I’m excited to take the next step to Junior A hockey and I’m looking forward to the challenge and continuing to improve as a player. My ultimate goal is to play NCAA hockey and this is the next step to achieve that. I can’t wait to be a part of the Steelers organization and contribute in any way I can to the team’s success.”
