A grass fire that broke out last Tuesday, July 7 on Kerr Creek Ranch on Highway 3 between Midway and Greenwood could have proven much more damaging than it did were it not for the swift actions of a passing RCMP officer and the speedy containment of the fire by Midway and Greenwood firefighters. Likely caused by sparks from a piece of haying equipment, the fire was initially contained by the haying contractor and passing motorists, but a sudden gust of wind blew the flames down field and the blaze quickly became out of control. The RCMP officer who was patrolling the area stopped and radioed for the fire department. Ranch owner Ian Williams said, “This was extremely fortunate, because cell service is still not available in our area, making calling 911 for help unavailable.” The Greenwood and Midway volunteer fire departments quickly arrived and managed to contain the fire. Cleanup took several hours. Williams added, “I would like to thank the members of the Midway and Greenwood fire departments for their service to the community as well as their quick response to this particular emergency. I would also like to thank the RCMP member and passersby that stopped to assist in battling the flames. This fire could have been disastrous for the area if it had spread and is a reminder of how dry our land is this time of year.”

The driver of a car that went off the road and down an embankment was airlifted to Kelowna General Hospital in stable condition last Monday. Her passenger was transported to Trail Hospital with minor injuries. According to RCMP, the female driver may have turned to speak to the passenger and simply
left the roadway, coming to a hard stop down the embankment. A B.C. Road Rescue crew used the Jaws of Life to remove the driver, with Emergency Health Services and Emcon Services in support. Police credit the crews’ efforts in likely saving the driver’s life. The highway was closed for almost an hour.

Cooler temps helps firefighters CRAIG LINDSAY

Cooler temperatures have helped firefighters battling several wildfires in the region. Jordan Turner, fire officer for the Southeast Fire Centre, said the colder weather and the precipitation have really helped firefighters’ efforts. “We had a few fires in the Boundary region last week but they’re all out,” Turner said. “We’ve had some precipitation. It’s been spotty but it’s helped when it has rained.” The evacuation alert for the Sitkum Creek wildfire near Nelson has been lifted as a result of recent precipitation and reduced fire activity. However, there is still an access restriction around the Sitkum Creek wildfire. The restriction has been put in place to protect the safety of the public and firefighting personnel. The fire currently covers 450 hectares and is 50 per cent contained. Authorities have prescribed a proactive burn out operation to fight the fire. “The wildfire is located in very steep and dangerous terrain and this burn out is necessary to limit the potential growth and direction of the fire,” said Noelle Kekula, fire information officer, Sitkum Creek Wildfire, in a press release. “The objective is to guide the fire toward control lines and contain the fire to the areas between Duhamel Creek and Sitkum Creek.” Kekula said that crews have established an equipment guard on the east flank of the fire and have built a fuel free control line on the south and west flanks of the fire. “When safe to do so, crews will begin a controlled fire to burn off any remaining unburned fuel between the guard and the wildfire,” she
added. “This removes fuel from the fire’s path and reduces the chance of the wildfire breaching the control line.” There are currently 120 firefighters, four helicopters and six pieces of heavy equipment battling the Sitkum Creek fire. Over the weekend there were 44 new lightning-caused wildfires across the Southeast Fire Centre. The largest one is an eight hectare blaze two kilometres south of Silverton and east of Highway 6 near Beaverton Creek and near the base of Mount Aylwin. There was an evacuation alert of the area but it was rescinded. The fire is 10 per cent contained. Currently, 20 firefighters and two helicopters are fighting the blaze. There was also a 1.5 hectare fire near China Creek, three kilometres west of Castlegar, which is now out. There is a group of four small fires directly across Lower Arrow Lake from Deer Park as well as a 0.3 hectare fire near Nemo Creek, two kilometres off the west shore of Slocan Lake. There is also a 0.2 hectare fire near South Bear Paw Lake north of Gladstone Provincial Park. The 117 hectare wildfire near Baynes Lake by Cranbrook is in mop-up status. There was also an end to the Smokey Skies Advisory for the Boundary issued on July 13 by the Ministry of the Environment. The release stated, “The weather system that is moving through the Southern Interior has reduced the amount of smoke carried into the region resulting in improved air quality. These conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.”

Hay shortage looming The drought that has gripped much of the west, including Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as several U.S. states, is predicted to result in a hay shortage this fall, which in turn will almost certainly drive prices upward. With Washington and Oregon farmers scrambling for animal feed, their search could turn northward to B.C., which, despite also being affected by hot, dry conditions is still managing to produce hay, with those farmers that irrigate having a generally good yield. Normally, Alberta is a major supplier of feed, but grain and hay crops have been poor, and in some cases simply turned over to cattle for grazing. Hay prices have nearly doubled, which in turn has driven beef prices through the roof. At-slaughter price records have been set with nearly $2 per pound. Saskatchewan is in no better shape, desperately in need of moisture to save crops. There is some precipitation in the forecast, but possibly not enough to prevent a below normal yield, with higher feed prices inevitable. With all this talk of drought, which threatens to become the norm, there are farmers finding a way to survive with much less water than they were once accustomed to, which may indeed be the only way for farming to continue to be viable. In California, for instance, where farmers are expected to lose about 33 percent of their surface water supply this year, not to mention fallowing 6-7 per cent of the state’s annual irrigated cropland, more and more growers are turning to precision irrigation practices to use significantly less water while maintaining the same crop yield. A report in online magazine Tech Crunch describes how California blueberry farmer Will Gerry has turned to a smart irrigation management system made by Hortau. “According to Gerry, blueberries are extremely sensitive to dry or overly wet conditions, so he monitors plant stress and soil moisture levels in real-time using the Hortau system. The wireless, solar-powered stations are equipped with soil and temperature sensors that report to the web in real time how his crop is faring. Using a smart phone, tablet or computer, Gerry is able to make irrigation decisions based on the live soil tension, moisture and temperature data. Using an online dashboard that graphs out plant stress thresholds, he knows exactly when he needs to turn on his computer-automated drip irrigation system, and, more importantly, when to turn it off once an optimal amount of water and nutrients have reached the root zone.” Precision Ag Tech is nothing new, but it’s beginning to take hold in the farming industry, and the companies responsible for the technology have been attracting significant investment of late. Let’s hope this “new” wave in farming can keep the supply of feed flowing and the price of hay affordable. If not, many smaller farmers will likely be in trouble.

Financial Planning Check-Up
It’s hard to believe we are over half way through 2015. As summer begins, now is a good time to take a look back and think about all the changes that you and your family have experienced over the past year and plan for any updates needed to your financial plan. Any major changes, whether they are personal or professional, can have a significant impact on your family’s insurance needs. A year-end review of your situation will help ensure that you have adequate coverage. If your family has grown, or you got married this year, your responsibility now extends to another person. Be sure to expand your life and disability coverage accordingly. A divorce, serious illness, or death in the family may also require you to adjust your insurance and estate plans. If you have changed employment or are expecting a raise or promotion soon, then your financial plan needs to be updated. With higher income come higher financial losses to your family if something were to happen to you. If you have lost your job or retired, then it is crucial to replace your group insurance benefits with a personal plan. With rising costs, perhaps you have taken on more debt. If you have purchased a new home, a new car or borrowed to renovate your bathroom, make sure your insurance is adequate to cover all liabilities and interest payments. Fall is also a good time to give your mutual funds and investment portfolio a check-up. With the year coming to an end, watch for year end distributions outside of registered plans. and protected as well as all historical documents archived, Larson said. Her idea is to approach college or university students to determine if this type of archival project would interest them. Larson said she appreciates that these are very unique historic elements, and she would like to see the courtroom again open to the public, utilizing the historical archives to welcome residents and visitors alike. Additionally, Larson reported that her assistant is currently looking through all community programs for any grant funding that may be available to the city.

The Greenwood Board of Trade welcomed MLA Linda Larson to its monthly meeting last Wednesday. Larson spoke of her firm plans to take part in the Founder’s Day parade the following Saturday and was pleased to be able to support the Board of Trade’s efforts to assist local businesses. Larson also advised the board that her office has now finished its review of the upstairs courtroom in City Hall, and has confirmed that all the stained glass in the building was made by the same artist responsible for that used in the Canadian legislature buildings. a year end tax distribution. If you invest now, you may end up paying tax for the whole year. It might be more tax-efficient to delay your purchase until the New Year. If appropriate for your investment strategy, consider selling your non-registered portfolio of holdings that are in a loss position. A capital loss must first be used to offset the tax on any capital gains realized in the same year. Any remaining loss can be applied to gains from the previous three years or used in the future. It is important to seek professional advice to determine the best strategy for your situation. December 31 is the deadline to contribute to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews so that you qualify for the Canada Education Savings Grant for 2015. Even if you do not contribute to a RESP, it is still wise to open an account as there may be grant monies available to you anyways. If you turn 71 this year, you have until December 31, 2015 to convert your RRSP’s to a Registered Retirement Income fund. Your income, however, can be deferred until the next year to allow you time to start budgeting this extra income for tax purposes. Professional guidance in all these circumstances is essential and can assist you in keeping your insurance, investment and estate plans up to date and allow you to take advantage of any opportunities that may arise.

Artist hosts painting party textured dry-wall mud and LOTS of colour. (The final work is to be donated to the Westbridge Community Hall.) Participants can share ideas, experience art in nature, and also create their own work of art to take home. Materials are provided, yet participants are asked to bring along a water bucket, small paper cups, table knife and piece of cardboard. Artists are also welcome to bring their own materials and medium if they wish. Over the past 40-plus years, in addition to his own creations in various media, Franzen has worked with many communities to create community art, specifically in schools. (On YouTube, fredfranzenart, you can see new and old videos of him at work.) Meanwhile Franzen, a native of Germany, also exhibits in the Rebecca Gallery in Toronto. He has been described in media as one who paints the natural landscape

Fred Franzen, a multi-media artist, presently based in Toronto, has chosen to visit the Kettle River Valley (Westbridge and Rock Creek) for inspiration for his next major show. While he is here he has offered to present a painting party at the Westbridge Community Hall on Tuesday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. And it’s free! Because Franzen is unfamiliar with the area, he needs a map. So, for this Kettle River Valley Painting Party, Franzen is inviting all area and visiting artists, kids, parents, grandparents, singles, farmers, cowboys, ranchers, tourists, passers-by etc. to come and bring their creative energy and immerse themselves in working (and having fun) together to make an innovative, abstract community map using a large sheet of plywood, smooth creamy-
in an abstract manner, as “pure painting,” and that his works are hard to associate with any movement or social condition. When asked recently if he would like to use an easel while in the Boundary, he replied, “No, I use the ground, or pin the board or paper to a tree, or rest on whatever is nearby.” Franzen normally spends his summers in Nova Scotia where he has created incredible abstract images of a river meeting ocean. This year we are fortunate in that he has chosen to visit the mountains and valleys of British Columbia, and the flowing Kettle River. Come and meet Franzen, join in some creative fun, and be sure to bring along a picnic lunch and lawn chair. Dependent upon the weather, everyone will be playing by and in the river. If it’s raining, we’ll be indoors. For more information, call Rosemary Phillips at 250-446-2929.

A little girl crawled up in the lap of her grandpa and cuddled close. Then she looked into Grandpa’s face with those big blue eyes of hers and said, “Grandpa, can you please make a sound like a frog?” Grandpa thought for a moment, then smiled and said, “Ribbit. Ribbit.” Suddenly, the little girl leaped from his lap and ran into the kitchen yelling as loud as she could, “Mommy, we are going to Disney World...we are going to Disney World...we are going to Disney World!!!” The young mom hushed her child and said, “Honey, why do you think we are going to Disney World?” The little girl, gleaming with joy, blurted out, “You said we can go to Disney World when Grandpa croaks!” Perhaps you don’t think humour has a place in the church… but I’d rather get you to laugh for a minute than put you sleep for 30. I find it strange that the Bible actually has to instruct us to be joyful. “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice” Philippians 4:4 Charles Spurgeon, a great preacher instructing a group of seminary students on sermon delivery, said, “When you speak of heaven, let your face light
up with a heavenly gleam. Let your eyes shine with reflected glory. And when you speak of hell—well, then your usual face will do.” As funny as that is, there is some truth to it. Sadly, too often, Christians lack joy. “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” Romans 14:17 What is the opposite fruit of joy? If you were to say, “sorrow” I’d say you were wrong because scripturally the opposite fruit of joy is hopelessness and despair. I read a story regarding “Selling Your Joy.” It seems a guy’s wife refueled their car at a filling station. Instead of driving up to the self-service pump, she acciden-
tally pulled up to full-service. She didn’t realize the luxury service cost an extra 13¢ per litre until she paid for the gas. Later she told her husband how the station had hiked the prices on fullservice. That extra cost per litre surely has to be a violation of some federal law, thought the husband. He quickly calculated that the extra $7 she spent on fullservice would have taken their vehicle 205 kilometres farther down the road if she had bought self-service gas. The “full-service gas station robbery” had him fuming for several hours. Then God showed him what he had done… he had sold his joy for $7! He realized just how quick we are to surrender something so valuable. At what price are you willing to sell your joy? Being joyful is a decision that you make. I encourage you to take pleasure in every minute of life, not just the exciting times. Enjoy your fellowship with others. Enjoy spending time with your family. Savor the moments. If you don’t, the life that God wants you to enjoy will pass you by.

4-H provincials a great experience Rock Creek resident Marijka van Kuik recently competed in the 4-H British Columbia 2015 Provincial Communications Finals in Vernon, where the top speakers and demonstrators from around the province competed for first place. Van Kuik, representing the KamloopsOkanagan region, was one of 22 participants, nine of which participated in the speaking competition and the remainder competing with demonstrations. The first evening began with a meet and greet supper, as competitors got acquainted and then listened to Tanya Laing Gahr, communications officer for the City of Vernon, offer pointers on communication skills. The second day was comprised of several agricultural tours, which would be the source for each competitor’s speech topic. The day was a balance of simply enjoying the tours while absorbing all of the information, which may or may not be needed. Speech topics at this point remained unknown. The first tour was in West Kelowna at the Paynter’s Fruit Market, where Jennay Oliver, (granddaughter of Henry Paynter, who started selling fruit in 1951) showed participants the family orchards and the vegetable field where they strive to always have some type of produce in season and ready to pick. Van Kuik said, “My taste for peaches was ruined there as we picked them fresh off the tree and ate them with juice dripping off our chins.” The group’s next stop was at the Davi-
son Orchards Country Village in Vernon, where it was given a tour of the Johnny Popper Orchard by current owner Bob Davison. Davison shared some history of the orchard and laughed about being “diversified to the point of insanity” as he explained all the different produce and products they have available. He also demonstrated the practicality of this in how they could salvage the sunburnt and hail-damaged apples to be used in their baked goods and juice. The group had lunch on the patio of the original farmhouse and sampled the orchard’s famous apple juice, described by one server as “a squished apple in your glass.” The final destination of the day was the De Dood Dairy Farm in Grindrod, where competitors toured a state-of-the-art dairy barn. They all agreed that the brand new, fully robotic operation was extremely impressive. Tour guides John and Curtis De Dood, a father-son duo that is taking their third generation farm to the next technological level, taught the group about “cow comfort” and how it is pays off in milk production. In the first month in their new facility, the De Doods had already seen a 30-per-cent increase in milk production. The weekend wrapped up with competition day, held at the Historical O’Keefe Ranch in Vernon, where speakers were given a topic 40 minutes ahead to prepare an impromptu speech on the importance of family farming in B.C. agriculture. The winners were announced during

Van Kuik added, “The event was a great experience! I made new friends and learned lots. I hope to be able to attend again some day. Thank you to all who generously support the 4H program in our community.”

Art show a beautiful array on display
Organizer Donna Guenther, pictured above, was pleased by the turnout for the inaugural Greenwood Art, Collectibles and Unique Crafts Show Sunday. Vendors came from far away as Nelson to sell their one-of-a-kind items. Amongst them was jewellery and stained glass artist Gavin Holland (right) and, (below, left) the Times’ own Adele LaRiviere, who, along with horticultural therapist Grazyna Manturzyk introduced passers-by to the beauty and practicality of butterflies. Also on display was some outstanding wood work by Haida Gwai artist George Storry (below right).
