WILL JOHNSON West Kootenay Advertiser
Kootenay Gutbuster’s founder Daryl Makk can hardly believe they’ve already reached the tenth anniversary of their popular annual weekend celebration of all things funny, held in Crawford Bay. “The Gutbuster is the kind of show you can’t get in the clubs,” said Makk, who noted the event is the only two-night outdoor comedy concert in Canada. “I like to call it the ‘funniest vacation ever’.”
The event, which is coming up on July 24 and 25, includes live music and stand up comedy, and the audience is encouraged to camp or stay nearby. The show often goes late into the night, too late to take a ferry back across Kootenay Lake without missing some of the performers. Makk said one one of the things that makes him most proud is the customers who return every year, from all over North America, for the event. ture’s plan. You know, we were meant to be picked off by predators. Now we protect the weak and move them to the middle of the herd—I guess you could say I think there’s too much over-pampering of self-entitled people.” Make said expect to make new friends and meet new people during the festival, and of course—expect plenty of laughs. The weekend pass for the event costs $66, or $33 for July 24 only and $35 for July 25 only. For more informationvisit kgbcomedy. com.

Recalling Kitto’s Landing Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
One hundred and third in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Among the many lost landings on Kootenay Lake is Kitto (or Kitto’s, or Kittos), where Kokanee Creek Provincial Park is today. The landing is believed to be named for Henry Richard Kitto (18671954), who was born in Everton, Merseyside, an inner-city area just north of Liverpool. He married Elizabeth Bell, born in 1869 in Derby, Derbyshire, and they came to Canada in early 1892 with two infant daughters. The family is nowhere on the 1901 census, but interestingly, a William J. Kitto, 24, was then a cook at the Athabasca mine near Nelson. His relationship to Henry is unclear; they weren’t siblings. In Kootenay Lake
Chronicles, Nick Dosenberger recounted arriving in the spring of 1908: “Next morning we caught the steamer Kaslo for Kitto’s Landing (Kokanee), on the north shore of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake ... Most of the original hardy pre-emptors who settled in the Kokanee area around 1905 had either abandoned their pre-emptions by 1908, or sold out. Charles Westly Busk, however had a crew of boys developing his property while W.A. Middleton and W. Kitto were also on the scene.” Meanwhile, Henry’s family settled in Calgary, where he had a bicycle repair shop. An ad in the Weekly Herald in 1897 promised “tires, inner tubes, toe clips, balls, wrenches, spokes, pedals, handle grips, nuts, bolts, caps, valves, etc.” By 1901, Kitto also dealt in guns and sporting goods. continued from page A8

Nine more Kitto children were born in Calgary, the last of whom was stillborn in January 1910. The family then left for Kootenay Lake, judging from this item in the Creston Review of Feb. 18, 1910: “H. Bothwell, who went to Calgary some time ago, is expected to go through Creston on his way to [Kokanee], a town near Nelson, with a car of farm furnishings for H. Kitto as Mr. Kitto sold his home and candy store and gun shop and is taking his wife on a farm for the benefit of her health.” The earliest known reference to Kitto Landing appeared in the Nelson Daily News on April 4, 1912 concerning a government wharf there. Coincidentally, another son was born to the Kittos in Nelson five days later. During this era, Kitto Landing was noteworthy as the spot where ore was hauled from the Molly Gibson mine. The 1918 BC Minister of Mines report noted: “This mine has been operated by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. Motor haulage from the mill to Kitto Landing was used for the first time this year and is reported to be considerably more economical than the use of teams.” By then, however, the family had moved to Nelson, where they lived at 407 Latimer St. and Henry was proprietor of the Nelson Gun, Lock, and Cycle Works at 412 Ward St. (Further diversifying his business, he also dealt in typewriters.) Kitto’s Landing was included in the civic directory for a few more years — along with resident fruitgrower W. Kitto — before falling into obscurity. Elizabeth Kitto died in Nelson in 1929 of malignant endocarditis and myocarditis, age 60. Henry retired to Vancouver around 1942. One night, while crossing a street on a dark, rainy night to catch a bus, he was out88. of your adv struck and Get killedthe by a most car. He was No births, marriages, or deaths were ever recorded at Kitto’s Landing. It’s not recognized by the BC Geographic Names database. But it’s not quite forgotten: Henry and Elizabeth Kitto’s granddaughter Karen Bond still lives in Nelson.

Wilks non-committal on all-candidates challenge The NDP candidate for KootenayColumbia is challenging the incumbent Conservative MP to attend more all-candidates meetings than he did in 2011, but David Wilks isn’t making any promises. New Democrat Wayne Stetski says Wilks missed forums in Kimberley, Creston, Revelstoke, Invermere, and Cranbrook last time and has to do better. “He needs to show respect for the people,” Stetski said. “All-candidates meetings provide an opportunity for the public to
see all of the candidates at once.” Stetski has proposed the parties form a committee to coordinate meetings in eight communities to ensure everyone can attend, but Wilks isn’t jumping on board. “If the NDP candidate wishes to concern himself with the debate schedule he can do that,” he said. “My focus is to serve my constituents.” Wilks is also skeptical about the usefulness of such meetings. “For the most part, those that come to all-candidates forums
have made up their minds who they are voting for, and as a result, the candidates normally know who is coming to the mic, what the question will be, and who it is directed toward.” Liberal Don Johnston and Green candidate Bill Green have accepted the invitation to collaborate on meeting dates. Green upped the ante by suggesting there should be meetings in 11 communities, including Salmo, Kaslo, and the East Shore of Kootenay Lake.

Following an appearance at the Vancouver Folk Festival, African folk singer Bongeziwe Mabandla will perform at a special Kootenay Savings Music in the Park concert on Tuesday, July 28. Mabandla calls himself a folk singer, yet his expressive voice evokes the emotions of pure Soul; his music is drawn from an eclectic mix of influences that range from Tracy Chapman to Oliver Mtukudzi. His sound has a rhythmically grass-roots vibe,
fusing elements of traditional Xhosa music, mbaqanga, soul, hiphop and dub. He is a storyteller who sings in both Xhosa and English, his heartfelt lyrics are a candid portrait of what he sees in the world around him. Mabandla, who will perform in Trail as part of a trio, is a young singer-songwriter from Tsolo, a rural town in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. He developed a passion for art and music from an early age, and though he studied
drama in Johannesburg, has dedicated his time and now his life to writing songs and performing. His debut album, Umlilo, was released in 2012 through Sony Music South Africa, garnering him critical acclaim and two South African Music Award nominations in 2013. Last year saw him continent-hopping: in Germany at Africa Festival, at the renowned Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona, at Japan’s Sukiyaki Meets the World
Festival, in the US for One Beat, a stop in North Korea, and a tour of Australia last November. This in addition to performing with Joss Stone and Vieux Farka Toure’ on their South African tours, along with other home-country performances. This summer he will perform at the Vancouver Folk Festival and other festivals in B.C. and Alberta. “It’s amazing to be able to share music with so many different people, it’s been a dream of mine to play around the
world so I’m always so happy to see that come alive. I feel extremely blessed to be embraced by different cultures.” Mabandla has developed his own unique, unplugged, Afro-folk style and is considered one of the hottest new acts in South Africa today — now coupled with a rising profile on the international scene. He will appear at Gyro Park in Trail on Tuesday, July 28 at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation. Bring your lawn chair.

Greater Trail athletes in 2015 Pan Am Games Jim Bailey West Kootenay Advertiser
Greater Trail athletes Thea Culley of Rossland and Fruitvale’s Ella Matteucci play two very different sports but their paths may cross when they compete as part of Team Canada’s contingent at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto July 11-26. “Playing at home in Toronto is going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Culley. “Some athletes will never get the experience of playing at a major games in front of a home crowd. I know that it is going to bring up a lot of extra emotion when we hear the anthem being played at the beginning of each game . . . It will be magical.” Apart from their red hair and athletic prowess, Culley and Matteucci are very different when it comes to their respective sporting careers. The 29-year-old Culley is a veteran of 10 years on the national team and the senior member of the women’s Team Canada field hockey team with close to 140 caps (games played against international competition). She competed in two Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2014, claimed a fourth-place finish at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and won bronze at the Pan Am Cup in Argentina in 2013. Matteucci is a 21-year-old two-sport phenom and one of the youngest players on Team Canada women’s baseball team. Her first international competition came last year
I think we are a bit of a frontrunner, and hopefully the crowd will push us over that edge, and be able to take home the gold. Obviously, that’s everyone’s goal and I think if we perform both defensively and offensively really well, we’ll be fine. Matteucci

Athletes in 2015 Pan Am Games continued from page A11
Matteucci recently graduated from Clarkson University where she helped the Knights hockey team to the NCAA championship in 2014 and won the 2011 AAA Midget Canadian championship Esso Cup with the Notre Dame Hounds in her graduating year from high school. Matteucci’s star is on the rise while the veteran Culley is looking at what could be her last shot at qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The winner of the Pan Am competition will advance to the Games and is Canada’s final opportunity at qualifying. Regardless of the outcome, it has been a very exciting and rewarding career for the RSS graduate and this year was no exception. The team travelled to New Zealand for a threeweek tour in January, were in Ireland for three weeks in March, and then their most recent tour was five weeks, two spent in Toronto where Team Canada
hosted Ireland in a four-game series in June and three weeks in Spain for the Olympic qualifying tournament. “I think over the course of my 10 year career on the team, the thing that I will value most is learning to be a champion,” said Culley. “To me, being a champion isn’t about winning or losing. It is the ability to get up one more time that you get knocked down, the ability to thrive in the the face of adversity, and the understanding that a dream will remain a dream unless you take the action required to make it reality.” The experience should serve Culley and Team Canada well going into the Pan Am Games, while, Matteucci and Canada’s baseball squad begin a warm up tournament in eastern Canada last week Their respective roads to gold began this week with the opening ceremonies last Friday with Matteucci and the Canadian baseball women opening the Games on July 20 against Cuba and Culley and the field hockey team went up against the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

Christina Lake held their annual Homecoming Summer Festival this past week with events going on at the beach and around town. Friday saw the volunteer appreciation and social hosted by the Christina Gateway Development Association. Also on Friday, a clean dry boat wash station was set up by the stewardship society providing education on zebra and quagga mussels and how to keep them out of the Lake. Saturday kicked off with a by-donation pancake breakfast at the community hall. There was also a market outside the hall with dozens of vendors showing off everything from wood, arts, pottery, crafts, jewelry, local produce and more. Several musical and dance acts performed throughout the day, first at the hall and later at the beach. Performers included Rae Dawn and the Eco Systems, Herb and Friends, Damian Alblas, Rara Avis dancers, the Grand Forks Community Band, Les Folles Jambette, Sunshine Drive, Hip Sisters and Luminosity.
The Trail Times is looking for newspaper carriers to deliver The Advertiser once a week, on Thursdays.

New guidebook for managing bats in buildings Summer is the season when property owners notice bats in their buildings. They may find guano on the deck, hear bats in the walls, or smell a build-up of guano. The Kootenay Community Bat Project, funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, has received numerous calls with these issues. In many cases, landowners are happy to leave bats where they are. However, for landowners who would like to have bats move out of their buildings, a new resource guide is available. “We are pleased to announce the publication of this booklet which we developed in partnership with the BC Community Bat Program,” says Juliet Craig, Coordinator for the Kootenay Community Bat Project. “Although we try to visit as many properties with bats as we can during the summer, we can’t always get to everyone. This new booklet, funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, and Habitat Stewardship Program, provides step-by-step information to landowners dealing with bat issues. Under the BC Wildlife Act it is illegal to exterminate or harm bats. In order to “get rid of bats,” the best strategy is to wait until they have left the building and seal up all the entry and exit points. However, in summer months, bat pups can become trapped inside. “The conservation of bats in BC has always been important since over half of the species in this province are considered at risk,” says Craig. “However, the Little Brown Myotis which is a common species in buildings has just been listed as Federally Endangered which means that managing bats

They use fall roost sites where they mate and then go into mines or caves to hibernate. Although there is a possibility that bats can use buildings over the winter, it is unusual. “There are several approaches to managing bats in buildings,” continues Craig. Some
landowners don’t mind having bats and simply leave them be or clean up the guano once a year. Others want to ensure that the bats are no longer able to use the building. We have developed a seven step guide to assist landowners with these issues.” One of the most important strategies in excluding bats from a building is to install a bat-house nearby. Selkirk College Community Education & Workplace Training is offering several exiting summer opportunities for both children and adults during the summer and into the fall. One of the offerings included in the summer schedule is a science camp in Christina Lake and Midway later this month.
Selkirk College community education always available for a lifelong learning spark The bustle in the Selkirk College hallways and classrooms slows during summer, but the excitement of educational opportunities never takes a break thanks to Community Education & Workplace Training (CEWT). Each year across the West Kootenay-Boundary region, Selkirk College offers hundreds of classes through its CEWT programming. From jewelry basics to accounting and beekeeping to first aid, qualified experts teach courses 12 months of the year at the college’s eight campuses and learning centres.
The variety of courses, classes, workshops and citations that we offer is impressive. There is always something new to explore and there is truly something for everybody. JENNIFER WETMORE “Community Education & Workplace Training is a vital link to the people of our region,” says Jennifer Wetmore, CEWT Coordinator at the Grand Forks Learning Centre. “The variety of courses, classes, workshops and citations that we offer is impressive. There is always something new to explore and there is truly something for everybody.” Many of the CEWT classes have been part of Selkirk College programming for decades, offering important training for residents of the region to expand their knowledge and skills. Others are one-time offerings that respond to current needs or
capitalize on opportunities to bring in locally-based instructors who design the courses to fit. This summer the East Shore of Kootenay Lake will be abuzz with one of the latest CEWT offerings being put together in partnership with community organizations. “This July and August we are offering three weeks of art, languages, dance and theatre for all ages at the East Shore Summer School at Crawford Bay,” says East Shore CEWT Coordinator Laverne Booth. “This is a great opportunity for people to visit this beautiful part of our region and ensure this is a summer to remember.” All CEWT classes are developed on a cost recovery model and don’t run if registration falls short. Due to the ebb and flow of interest in courses and different offerings, it is vital that those interested in courses sign up quickly to ensure enrolment is adequate to offer the course. “Most of our courses run without any issues,” says Susan Chew, CEWT Coordinator at Selkirk College’s Trail Campus. “The odd time there will be disappointment when not enough people register for a class and it’s just as disappointing for us. That’s why ensuring you register for classes early is important so we can make sure everyone gets what they want.” Selkirk College summer programming is taking place in all communities around our region and Kaslo is one where CEWT has helped put together a wide variety of options. “We are happy to be working with other community organizations offering a wide range of youth programming throughout the summer break,” says Dawn Lang, CEWT Coordinator at the Kaslo Learning Centre. “Kids can play soccer, join a bike camp, learn about parkour, make a Lego robot, drop in at the Youth Centre or enjoy the efforts of a local youth research residency through the Langham Cultural Centre. For those seeking a longer adventure, there is also a two-week youth day camp being offered in early August.” Explore a wide variety of options at all campuses and learning centres by heading to Selkirk College’s Community Education & Workplace Training webpage at selkirk.ca/ce. Kids summer programs can be found at selkirk.ca/ce/courses/children-youth.

A young Trail videographer has been quietly making a name for himself. But his latest video that captures his city in the still of night has turned up the volume. Inspired by the movie Nightcrawler or more so the film’s soundtrack, 19-year-old Eric Gonzalez decided to test out his new camera and drone last week. A couple edits here and his two-minute video was posted on Vimeo (vimeo.com/ericgonz) with a tagline to the Facebook following Lost Kootenays. That same day, he received a call from CBC and his work was featured and shared. “I wanted to show Trail in a way that few people have seen it,” he told the Times Wednesday. He certainly achieved that with aerial images of Teck Trail Operations glowing and smoking in the night. “To not include it would not have represented Trail,” said Gonzalez, who graduated from J.L. Crowe Secondary in 2013. “It takes up quite a bit of town and I figured I might as well include it and do my best to portray the city.” The video starts much like the opening to Nightcrawler with still images. But the storyline does not follow a young man out in Los Angeles like the film does, but rather captures Trail’s lonely dark streets
Trail Regional
backdropped with the constant pulse of the smelter and flowing life of the Columbia River. Gonzalez is home for the summer from marketing studies at the University of Calgary, where he is committed to gaining business insight all while honing his self-taught passion of videography. “I think it’s more important for me to make sure I get that stuff figured out before I do the artistic thing,” he laughed when asked whether he signed up for the wrong course. “The artistic stuff flows, you can do it on your own.” He is enjoying his time at university plugging away at his studies while also capturing some pretty great videos for the school’s newspaper. But coming home inspires him in a way that the buzz of the city doesn’t. “I have an open canvas pretty much here so it’s fantastic for me to be able to come back,” he said.

Graduates of Selkirk College’s Kootenay Studio Arts opened an exhibit of their work at the Kootenay Art Gallery in Castlegar last week. The exhibit is called Pop Up Store and Show, because not only do you get the opportunity to admire the works, but you can also purchase them. Items from eight artists are on display and up for sale including metal works, fibre arts, jewelery and ceramics. “We called it Pop Up, because it was a very last minute idea,” said Kootenay Art Gallery executive director Val Field. “They (KSA
graduates) always do a sale in Nelson when they finish the year. We did not have space available other years, but it was available this year, so we decided to go for it. It is giving them a little bit of extra exposure, we have sold a few things already. It also keeps the gallery full and utilized.” Kootenay Studio Arts is a two year diploma program offered at the Nelson Selkirk College campus. It offers students an opportunity to explore and hone design and technical skills in a studio setting, with the intention of equipping them to build an artisan career. The show is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. To 5 p.m. until August 1. The Gallery is located at 120 Heritage Way, across Charles Harris created this striking piece in bronze.
