◆ COVER STORY
The steam era of transportation is alive at McLean Mill July 24-26 DAVID HOOPER SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
The 2015 edition of the ‘Steam-Up’ and Antique Machinery Show is taking place this Friday, July 24 to Sunday, July 26 at McLean Mill National Historic Site in the Alberni Valley. The show is being organized by members of the Industrial Heritage Society. The 1917 ‘Farquhar’ steam traction engine, restored at the local Industrial Heritage Centre in 2013, will be one of the machines featured in the show. The ‘Farquhar’ was built at what we now know to be at the tail end of the steam era in road transport. The City of New Westminster had bought it to pull roadbuilding machinery like graders and gravel carts but it was soon replaced by trucks. Powered by internal combustion engines, trucks were lighter, more flexible, cheaper to buy and operate. Drivers did not need as much training—or pay—as steam engineers, either. That is why the machine soon ended up in Port Alberni, where the Cowley family used it to power their little

sawmill in Cherry Creek. Then, they sold it to the R.B. McLean Lumber Co. Mill, where the engine was used to power the planer. Neither the Cowleys nor the McLeans used it as a traction engine, as that day was done. The surprise is that the Farquhar even survived to be restored after 96 years. It is unique in that the engine has two pistons—making it very rare 98 years later. Restoration was possible due to the participation of members of the Boilermakers

Union, who donated hundreds of hours of their time to the re-tubing of the boiler. Without them, and the persistence of Les Stevens, the project would never have been completed. A 1912 Mann steam truck and a ‘Ruston’ steam roller from the BC Forest Discovery Center in Duncan will be on display for Steam-Up. Along with a ‘Stanley Steamer’, they will be seen periodically chuffing around the site, along with the other vintage vehicles. A second steam truck will be shown by Roger Blayborne, one

of the boilermakers who helped restore the Farquhar and the steam donkey that can be seen in operation at the oldtime logging demonstration. There will be a display of vintage tractors and other antique machinery on site small motors and bigger ones that made
life and work easier in the last century. For the children of all ages, there will be a miniature steam train, operated by the Vancouver Island Model Engineers of Victoria. We hope to have other rides for children on site. There will be radiocontrolled boats operating on the log pond, too, and Dave Walmsley is bringing his steam launch. All this is on the site of a steam-powered sawmill, with a steamlogging operation, accessed by a steam train from Port Alberni Train Station. The site will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the show. The Steam-up and Antique Machinery Show is sponsored by the Coastal Community Credit Union. Alberni District Co-op and BC Ferries provided assistance with the transportation of some of the vintage equipment.
‘Contained doesn’t mean out’ SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
The Dog Mountain forest fire southwest of Port Alberni is 100 per cent contained, but that doesn’t mean the fire is out, says fire information officer Marg Drysdale from the Coastal Fire Centre. Smoke and flames will still be visible on parts of Dog Mountain as conditions continue to dry out over the weekend and into next week. “We’ve got containment on that fire. Most people are assuming that containment means out. That’s not the case,” Drysdale said. BC Wildfire branch crews are allowing forest fuel within the perimeter to burn itself out, and the perimeter is being patrolled. “ I know they’re monitoring that fire very carefully, largely because of the concern in the community.” Critics in the community, however,
questioned why crews don’t just douse the fire with water. “Can you tell me why we have to suffer day after day of smoke and flames around the shoreline of Dog Mountain when so little effort would be required to snuff these dozen or two hot spots out,” Bob Cole wrote in a letter to Coastal Fire Centre manager Ken Taekema and copied to the Alberni Valley News. Fire information officer Donna MacPherson said there is no need to put water on the fire. “It is doing what we expect it to do. Right now the fire is burning within the containment line we’ve established. Allowing the fire to consume the fuel strengthens the guard even more,” she said. Even with the hot, dry weather, the work that crews did last week to reduce the fuel load means it doesn’t have the heat to jump the lake. Continued / A5

establish a wet line on the seven-hectare fire east of Highway 3A. The fire was discovered on July 11. Fire information officer Karlie Shaughnessy said the BC Wildfire branch brought in the Martin Mars for one day because “it was the right tool for the job.” The fire is on steep terrain, making it difficult to get water
tenders and heavy equipment to the fire line. The waterbomber returned to Port Alberni at 7 p.m. Saturday. There were still 159 wildfires burning in B.C. as of Friday afternoon (July 17). The BC Wildfire Branch has 2,200 people working on the fires across the province, including 150 from other
countries, provincial fire information officer Navi Saini said. Australian firefighters arrived late last week and have been deployed within the Coastal Fire Centre. To report a wildfire or open burning violation, call 1-800663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.

“This is a policy that is throughout the province,” MacPherson explained. The fire at Puntzi Lake is being treated the same way, as are many of the other fires that have been contained. “Most of the large fires are. I think the problem is people in the Alberni Valley aren’t used to looking at wildfires where people in other parts of the province [like the Okanagan Valley and Cariboo Region] are used to dealing with them a bit more. “Every time we send a crew somewhere there is a risk to them. So we look at whether the risk is worth the output.

Family Law My parents gave me $25,000 to help with the Laura Kara purchase of my Allen Duncan first house. I am buying it with my girlfriend and we are both going to be on title to the home. If we break up, will I get the $25,000 back because my parents gave it to me?
The Family Law Act (FLA) in British Columbia states that unmarried spouses who have lived together for at least two years are both entitled to an equal division of family property after separation. However, the FLA also states that gifts are excluded property and not subject to equal division. Unfortunately, it is not that simple as some courts have held that when excluded property is used to purchase a home subsequently registered in the names of both spouses, the exclusion is lost. To be safe, always obtain a cohabitation (or prenuptial) agreement that outlines your intentions regarding the gift in the event that you and your partner separate. NOTE: THIS INFORMATION IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE, AND YOU SHOULD NOT RELY ON IT AS SUCH. TO ENSURE YOUR INTERESTS ARE PROTECTED, FORMALLY SEEK THE ADVICE OF A LAWYER.

It’s time to think positively about psychology “People often say that this or that person has not yet found himself. But the self is not something one finds. It is something one creates.” – Thomas Szasz
F
or many years mental health support has focused on looking at problems and seeing if anything can be done about them—in other words, “fixing.” As a result, so much focus seems to have been on what’s wrong rather than what’s right with people. Somehow people have become victims of their genes, environment and circumstances; the best they can hope for is to learn how to tread water. Offering more than this with a new way to think about psychological care is positive psychology. This approach teaches people how to swim and to swim well. People do not just have to ‘float’. Positive psychology recognizes and supports people while knowing they are capable of real growth and change. Positive psychology is not a self-help movement or a re-packaging of “the power of positive thinking.” Nor is it the North American-style “happy-ology,” or a passing fad. Positive psychology is an actual scientific field of study that has brought about psychological theory, research and techniques

Even more exciting, these researchers have translated their findings into concrete strategies that anyone can use to improve overall well-being—no winning lottery ticket, tropical vacation, fantasy romance, high powered job or even therapy (what??) required. Seligman, in his most recent book Flourish (2011), argues that the concept of well-being is made up of five measurable elements: positive emotion, engagement, positive relationships, meaning and accomplishment. In this way, well-being is a combination of both feeling good and doing good. Seligman contends that when people maximize all five elements they thrive emotionally, mentally and physically. The evidence supporting just how
beneficial optimism and happiness actually are continues. Studies show people who are optimistic are less vulnerable to anxiety, depression, PTSD and other forms of mental unwellness. Others demonstrate that happy people are less likely to develop cardiovascular disease, cold, flus, and other illnesses. Those with high levels of life satisfaction cope better with stress and tend to sleep more fully. Positive people live longer. Other benefits of happiness include higher incomes, superior work outcomes and greater social rewards. Sonja Lyubomirsky (2007) demonstrated that happy people are more creative, helpful, charitable and selfconfident and have better self control.
Positive psychology also has shown that life satisfaction is not elusive, genetic or largely dependent upon external events. Certain simple, intentional activities can be learned and lead to substantial positive changes in
one’s life. Moreover, when people start to bring positivity into their lives it tends to become a selfperpetuating cycle. Well-being is within reach. Sometimes no matter what you do, making a change
remains difficult. Speaking with a doctorl or a therapist/ counsellor may be helpful. Pamela Ana MA & CCC, owns Wellness Matters Counselling and Psychotherapy. Call 778-419-3300.

to understand the more positive and emotionally fulfilling aspects of human behaviour. Positive psychology focuses on the factors that make life worth living and more fulfilling, rather than simply looking at the problems. It has also been defined as the study of strengths and virtues that enable people, communities and organizations to thrive. In 1998 Martin Seligman, then president of the American Psychological Association, suggested that psychology turn toward understanding and building human strengths to complement the traditional emphasis on mental illness. He thought that psychology had neglected the positive side of life, having spent much of the last half century primarily concerned with mental illness rather than mental well-being. As a result, psychologists and psychiatrists can now measure with considerable precision, and effectively treat, a number of major mental illnesses. However, this came at a cost. Relieving life’s miseries meant quality of life was less of a priority. In the years since, researchers in the field of positive psychology have used empirical methods to study the factors that have people create their own happiness and flourishing as a result.

I would like people to see this and think ‘we can do this’. “We didn’t spend hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

The original shop was located in a converted barn on Swinkels’ Cowley Road property. The atmosphere at the barn, where the concept of selling for-profit ceramic cookware and giftware in order to fund nonprofit organizations such as Ty Watson House and the Better at Home program in the Alberni Valley, was cosy, friendly and upbeat. Swinkels hopes to continue with that feeling, albeit in a cottage right in town that will be open longer hours and ultimately more accessible to customers. “We’re very excited,” she said Saturday
following a ribbon cutting at the busy yellow cottage. At the same time the journey has been interesting, she said. Swinkels bought the 1940s-era building in February 2015 and began renovations in March. She quickly encountered WorkSafe BC issues no one had told her about when she bought the house. For example, any home built before 1990 must undergo a hazardous materials inspection before any renovation can start. Brian Herton and Karen Kossey at Mid-Island Safety in Nanaimo came to Swinkels’ aid with the inspection. “That blew me away that people
