Rimbey Exhibition Association hits 50th anniversary BY AMELIA NAISMITH
This is the 50th anniversary of the Rimbey Exhibition Association (REA) and the years of hard work and longstanding tradition were honoured this year at the Rimbey Rodeo. “The Rimbey Exhibition Association was formed in December 1965,” said promotions director and treasurer Hazel Street. Because the snow was already flying Rimbey did not see its first rodeo until the following year. “We celebrate our 50 years because our association was formed then,” Street explained. Spen Muddle was the president of the day and Lawrence Calkins was the secretary. “Over the years there’s been many dedicated volunteers to the REA,” said Street. She says this year, as it has been in the past, the REA is made up of a great team of individuals. During the Rimbey Rodeo this year the remaining founding and early members: Jim Hale, Delmar Skeels, Gerald Skeels, Ken Smithson, Neval Roper and Lawrence Anderson, were honoured with a wagon ride past the cheering crowd. In its inaugural year and the following few, the Rimbey Rodeo was a Little Britches Rodeo. Along with the rodeo events the Rimbey Rodeo featured flat races, pro chuckwagon races and in later years the pony chucks. Street says it was Tom Dorchester who helped get the pro chuckwagons started in Rimbey. During the early years of the Rimbey Rodeo horses brought to town were stabled in the old curling rink. “They put posts down the middle and tied the horses on each side,” said Street. For a while attendance to the rodeo was waning but Street says she has been told numbers are picking back up in recent years. “Delmar (Skeels) said they used to have great crowds, handing off the fences and everywhere.” Business support for the rodeo and the association also used to be nothing special but Street says it is the complete opposite now. “I can’t stress enough the support we have from local
businesses.” “The local businesses . . . and the volunteers, without them we’d have nothing,” she added. With business, volunteer and crowd support on the rise it is no surprise the REA and rodeo have been a part of the community for five decades.
“Just from my aspect of it I’m so proud there’s been enough interest in it, and commitment from the volunteers,” said Street. Despite competition the rodeo faces from other events in town Street feels it remains important to the town and those who visit to see it.
The rodeo has also helped other organizations in town by keeping the grounds up to date and neat. Along with Street, Delmar and Joyce Skeels took the time to dig through old memories and recall the history of the Rimbey Rodeo.

MP Blaine Calkins The job of running a country as great as Canada requires strong leadership. Our businesses and farmers understand that concept, they understand that Canadian products need a market to go to for them to succeed and for our economy to be strong. Whether that is aerospace, aluminum, wood, transportation, agriculture, fish and seafood, and renewable energy – free-trade is at the heart of that success. Our Government recognizes this and Canada is committed to deepening our trade ties with partners around the globe. Furthermore, our Government realizes the immense

tries bringing the total to 43, making up more than half of the global economy and representing nearly one quarter of the world’s countries. In the 20 years since NAFTA was signed the GDP in North America has doubled and Canada has 4.7 million more jobs. Opening up markets for our products creates economic stability; trade in Canada is equivalent to 60% of our economy and it is also linked to one in five jobs, these are important figures to remember when con-
sidering who has the track record of strong leadership on trade. Our Government remains committed to an ambitious and balanced approach to Free-Trade Agreements with our global partners. At a time when countries such as Greece are defaulting on loan payments because they refuse to rein in spending; talking tough and having the track record to make the necessary decisions to keep the country’s economy moving is what is needed. Our Government has that track
record and our Government will not gamble with risky socialist tax and spend and protectionist policies like NDP and Liberals are proposing. potential that Free-Trade Agreements offer Canadian businesses and farmers, which is why we have undertaken an aggressive and balanced trade agenda. I decided to temporarily try out a certain aspect of retirement — living in a campground. Arizona accepts Canadian snow birds for six months out of every year. I needed to know what the romance of semi-transient life was like, but not in Arizona: I wear black denim and
black cowboy boots — Arizona’s climate would boil my blood off. Staying in the Lion’s Campground in Red Deer sure seemed like it could be something I would enjoy though. The Old Man lent me his gypsy caravan (holiday trailer). It’s nothing special; but the awning works, the toilet flushes, and it has cool fridge for a few bottles of beer — everything a man needs. I used the caravan for a couple of days of weekend camping, with the boys, before checking into the Lion’s for a week in RD. It’s not exactly remote, nor was it a private location. Certain loops of the Lion’s campground were only missing the yellow lines of a parking lot. But
I was about slingshot distance away from the river. Only a chain-linked fence and bike path separated my boots from the river’s edge. While I was there I wanted to stand by the river for a little while during one evening. There have been several occurrences when I’ve been traveling and sat by the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans. Standing by the Red Deer River doesn’t hold up against some of the personal moments I’ve spent by some majestic bodies of water, but I got what I needed near the turbid currents of the mighty Red Deer. Literature, film, lyrics, and folklore use rivers symbolically to represent the flow of life. I don’t like to think of my life as a
river. A river flows in one direction. I like to think of my life as an ocean. An ocean doesn’t have a direction or a path — it just covers instead of following the edges of the banks. You don’t get a break from life to stand on the river’s edge to analyze its flow. A life worth living is spent thrusting over the white caps of the crashing ocean waves. Respite comes near the end when one is washed up on the shore of a beach while clutching a corked bottle holding the scroll mapping out the path to sunken treasure. I put in my twoweek notice, prior to checking into the Lion’s campground, from the job that paid me. A set of wrenches can pay the bills
faster than an old Royal typewriter can, however, my life doesn’t flow like a river. I want to cover everything. There is a few weeks this summer where I plan on riding my motorcycle and visiting a little old place, in the Cypress Hills, called Sturgis. After my fast and loose motorcycle mission concludes, there will be a full course load at the Red Deer College waiting for me in the fall. Don’t ask me how I intend to pay for my role as the prodigal son — I may have to live in the Old Man’s caravan beside the Bluffton Pond. Who has time to work when there is an ocean of life to sail through?

How low can you get? Dear Editor, The Legion Hall in Winfield has been built in memory of our Canadian soldiers. They went to war to prevent our country from becoming a Nazi state. The ones who made it back resumed their lives and raised their children to respect others, love each other and be honest. That is what Legion halls across this great country are about. “Respect, Love and Honour.” Thousands of volunteer hours have been donated to build the new Winfield Legion Hall to honour our soldiers, past and present. To the thieves who broke into the hall and stole items
not belonging to them, I say, “Leave Winfield and don’t ever come back.” These soldiers fought wars to protect your sorry butts. Your own grandfathers likely fought these wars to keep our country safe and free. You have no honour and no respect even for your own grandparents’ sacrifices. If you thieves know how to read, this letter is for you, if you don’t know how to read get a war veteran to read it to you. You have dishonoured your family and all the soldiers who fought to protect your lazy, sorry butts. How low can you get? Ray Barrette
Missing cat Dear Editor, Recently my one-year-old black and white spayed female cat has gone missing. She has white on her face, chest, belly and paws. She was wearing a pink collar with my number on it when last seen. She and her full sister rarely go outside while in town, yet they are crated and travel to the farm frequently, where I would expect them to get harmed from foxes, owls, dogs or get into farm machinery. I try to keep an eye on them if they are out in my town yard. I have trees, flowerbeds and a garden for them to wander in and they might go one or two doors down if playing. It was almost dark when they snuck out and one didn’t some back when I called. I knew something was wrong since they never get far from each other or at least run by me while trying to catch them. I called the animal control person to see if someone had picked her up and (was) ready to pay my fine. They told me Rimbey doesn’t have a cat bylaw. They don’t pick up pick up cats but to send them a picture and they would post it. Worried for her safety I made posters and Rimbey Vet Clinic has posted it on their Facebook and businesses have let me post them up in town. I now have widened my search and placed an ad in the local paper. Where could she go! Maybe she traveled further and got lost. Did she get locked in a shed since it was dark when she was last seen? Perhaps she got up into a vehicle and is a stow away. It was the evening before the July 1st holiday
and a lot of people travel. So she could be in the country or another town. Good thing she has her collar on. Worse case … what if someone trapped her. I heard rumors of cats not staying around long in my part of the neighborhood since her disappearance. Not everyone likes cats even though they hunt rodents. If this has happened, my question is to any reading this would be: what are they doing with them after they are caught? They would have to most likely bait the trap. I would call this luring an animal into their yard, which may otherwise not normally go on that property. Once caught, and not a stray … remember that my cat had on a contact tag with a collar. Would they call? Would they catch and release? Some would call that abandoning if released other than their yard. Would they kill it, even if they thought it was humane? Some would call this cruelty to animals if not another criminal name. So I write this letter to inform cat owners in Rimbey that there is not cat bylaw and to use caution if your pet goes outside, even though it is harder to manage where a cat goes. If you own a trap sell them, or know of a friend who uses one, there are other ways or means to discourage a cat from coming onto your property that doesn’t run the risk of a criminal record if you’re not properly managing the welfare of the animal being caught. Barrel racer Crowned Rimbey Rodeo queen BY AMELIA NAISMITH
Ponoka County resident Kayla Dueck was crowned Miss Rimbey Rodeo at the July 12 performance of the rodeo, approximately two months after tossing her cowgirl hat into the ring. Dueck and her two other competitors, Lindsay Newman and Melissa Sisson stood in the middle of the arena with baited breath while the lesser awards were handed out. Dueck says when she heard Newman’s name called for the princess position she was happy and thrilled for her friend but when she learned she was the new queen she slipped into a state of excited shock. “I think it probably sunk in the day after the rodeo,” said Dueck. “I was so nervous I don’t think I had any thoughts going through my head,” she added. Now that the dust has settled Dueck says she is ecstatic — and a little overwhelmed — at the idea of representing rodeo and Rimbey for the next year. When it comes to the sport of rodeo Dueck says she is ready to get rid of any misconceptions people may have. “Rodeo is portrayed in some parts of different countries as a really bad sport. So I want to go out there and say ‘hey, this sport is just like hockey or it’s just like soccer’.” Dueck wants people to realize those who compete in rodeos do not simply see it as a competition. “You have to have horsemanship. You have to be aware the animal you’re running has a different range of emotions.” The barrel racer is also looking forward to attending events in different communities and to represent Rimbey to help make people aware of where the small town is. Sponsored by Holly’s Greenhouse, to whom she is quite thankful, this was Dueck’s first experience with a rodeo pageant competition and she entered after being motivated and supported by woman in the community.

Now she wants to put her best boot forward and be a role model for other young girls who want to wear the crown in their own futures. “I love having that kind of affect on people,” said Dueck. Dueck also competed in the ladies barrel racing at the Rimbey Rodeo. “Out of roughly 75 ladies I placed
18th.” She ran all her races on her horse Vegas, whom she has had for approximately 11 years. “I bought her off the meat truck when she was a baby.” Dueck aspires to one day compete at the Canadian Finals Rodeo. “I’m very excited to try and get my pro permit.”

Bluffton boy takes top 6 at Calgary Stampede short go BY AMELIA NAISMITH
A Bluffton cowboy and rising star in the world of steer riding recently made the short go at the Calgary Stampede and won his division at the Rimbey Rodeo. This was the first year Dylan Conners competed at the Calgary Stampede and after an initial 70.5 ride on opening day he was good enough to come back as one of six for the short go. He bucked off in the short go but placed fifth in the aggregate. “I was excited and nervous,” said Conners. After making his ride so early in the Stampede Conners says it was agonizing watching 30 other boys take their turns Sunday through Thursday. For his long go ride Conners had fairly straight shooter who jumped her way out of the chute and down the arena. “It was kind of easy.” His short go draw was a little more wild and he knew if he was able to master the eight seconds together they would bring in a great score. “My friend, he got her the first day in the slack. She came out and spun in front of the gate. Her first footprint was still in the chute,” said Conners. For his short go ride the animal got more jumpy but when she did start to spin she dropped her back end, throwing Conners’
balance off and sending him down early. “I was excited to draw her. I would have won it if I rode her.” “I was excited to make it back to the short go,” he added. One of the bigger challenges for Conners was the crowd he faced at the Calgary Stampede. He also came face-to-face with his bullriding idol JB Mauney. “He signed my back number,” said Conners. Conners studies Mauney online and in videos to help improve his own riding. Conners was also the only steer rider at the Calgary Stampede with bright pink hair, taking Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day to a whole new level in support of breast cancer. His chaps also sport the breast cancer ribbon. “My Nana and my uncle passed away from cancer. Just an idea popped up in my head that I wanted to dye my hair pink,” Conners explained. This is not the first time Conners has sported a neon ‘do and he usually makes his rides with a pink Mohawk. Rimbey Rodeo For Conners, winning the 7 to 12 steer riding at the Rimbey Rodeo was special in a different way. “It’s like a hometown rodeo.” This was the last year Conners could compete in that event and next year he will ride in the 13 to 15 steer riding as he continues his journey to pro bull rider.
Rimbey and District Hort. Group hosting Rose and Lily Show SUBMITTED
This is the busiest time of the year for many community groups and volunteers as they plan summer events. Support from the public always makes these events a success. The next event sponsored by the Rimbey and District Horticulture Group is the Rose and Lily Show. This is a for-runner leading up to the Horticulture and Craft Show to be held in August. This event is not only for the veteran growers but is also an opportunity for anyone who has never participated in a “Bench Show” to learn the “ins and outs” of these events and meet with others who enjoy growing roses and lilies. Also an opportunity for the Hort. Group to show what can be grown in this area. The Rimbey and District Horticulture Group will be setting up a tent between the schoolhouse and the church in Pas Ka Poo Park and there will be volunteers to assist those who bring in their roses
and lilies. This spring, it seemed that many perennials had a slow start but a couple of good rains changed that in a hurry and now we are looking forward to see what “man” (woman) and nature can produce. Here are a few tips that could help when putting your exhibit together: #1 Bring your own container (vase, rose bowl, etc.) because there will be none available on site this year. #2 Lilies tend to be heavy so a sturdy container is recommended. Old milk bottles work well or any tall, heavy vase. #3 Want to keep your lily looking tall and proud when the neck of the vase is too wide? Then tuck a small piece of something (celery?) beside the stem to keep the lily upright. #4 Your Lilly could be three to four feet tall while in the garden but a two-foot stem or less should work well. Roses are something else. #1 Long stemmed?
Leaves but no buds. #2 In a bowl? Own foliage but nothing else #3 Miniature? One stem with leaves and buds. #4 Shrub? One stalk with leaves and buds. Why all the rules? To make it an even playing field for all. Hope the hints are helpful. Volunteers will be available to put tags on the entries. There is no charge to enter but your entry could win you a gift card.
Dylan Conners made the short go at the Calgary Stampede in his first year of competing in the prestigious rodeo. Submitted photo

Flyboarding comes to Gull Lake this year BY AMELIA NAISMITH
Forget walking on water, the new trend is flying on it. Flyboarding is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world and is easily accessible to the residents of Ponoka County with a location on Gull Lake. Alberta Flyboard’s Gull Lake location is open at Parkland Beach and is offering those willing to get wet a chance at an entirely new adventure. “It’s been around for about four or five years now,” said owner Travis Young, referring to the sport. It was developed in France by a man named Frankie Zapata. In Alberta, the sport still mainly rely on Youtube videos and word-of-mouth. “It’s on the verge of being known,” said Young. Young, who is a sports fan, says flyboarding offers an experience like no other. “I’ve skydived. It’s way cooler than skydiving.” “You pretty much feel like your flying. Basically it’s like Iron Man powered by water,” he added. While the sport may look intimidating, Young says 90 per cent of people are up within the first five to seven minutes. He has already had two participants over the age of 60 come out to board. “The learning curve is fairly quick.” “We want everybody to try a sport like this,” he added. Whichever method riders choose, the flyboard or the hoverboard, they are attached to a Jet Ski with a 60ft tube. “Your Jet Ski acts as a giant pump,” said Young. The trained driver works the Jet Ski’s throttle, which in turn pushes the water through the system and out the board. “The first invention was the flyboard,” said Young. The hoverboard came out last year. “It’s basically a snowboard that offers the same style of riding,” Young explained. Alberta offers five flyboard locations, Sylvan Lake, Gull Lake, Cold Lake, Lake Wabamun and Jack Fish Lake. “That is where we hold our yearly certifications and retreats,” said Young. Young got into the sport after watching a Youtube video. “(I) put it on my bucket list. After the first time I was hooked.”
At the end of June, a cheque for $560 was presented to Red Deer SPCA representatives Lisa Ruether and Eva by Kelsey Vig (far left who had played “Annie”) and Bentley Fine Arts Academy teacher Marla Kolybaba (far right). The money, along with donations of leashes, dog toys, towels, and pet dishes, was raised at the Bentley Jr. High Drama Class's musical production of “Annie Jr.” June Norvila Photo

In the first game Rimbey squared off against Edson — who ended up taking gold — in a 2-1 loss. Coach Logan Pankiw says Rimbey was the only team who even came close to beating Edson. “It was pretty good. We thought we could have got bronze at least,” said Pankiw. He says his team played well and created many chances for themselves but Edson’s strong goalie was able to counteract their efforts. “It was pretty tough. The pool we were in was a lot harder,” said Pankiw. The girls also lost their second game but beat both teams in their third and fourth games. continued on page 19

Soccer provincials
Back row L to R: Coach Jay Hohn, Taylor Towle, Sylvia Trautman, Anna Coers, Melodie Chainey, Kaitlyn Butcher, Casey Belway, Alissa Butcher, Triana Hohn, assistant coach Logan Pankiw. Middle row L to R: Manager Sheila Mannix, Sawyer Liddle, Cassie Mannix, Mdi McLaren, Lindsay Jansen, Kaylea Greer-Shallock. Front row L to R: Taylor Pankiw and Tasha Kjenner.
Continued from page 18 Pankiw says while all the girls worked together to create scoring chances, and followed through on most opportunities, one of the team’s greatest assets during provincials was goaltending. “Our goalie actually played really well. She’s younger than most of the other members.” With 16 girls on the roster, a few from Ponoka play, Pankiw says one of the biggest challenges he saw the girls facing was their body size compared to many of their opponents, which affected their abilities on the field.
Bentley minor soccer growing BY JUNE NORVILA
Interest in Bentley Minor Soccer continues to grow. This year there were 86 children registered in minor soccer with 74 registered in house leagues for U6 (under 6 years old) to U10 (under 10 years old) and another 12 in U12. This year soccer play started in the second week of April — earlier than usual due to the early spring. Dedicated parents make soccer in Bentley possible. The season ended the end of June. There were five U6 coaches, two U8 coaches and two U10 coaches. The U8’s played a few games against the Blackfalds U8 teams. The U10’s practiced once a week and played one game a week against neighboring towns like Rimbey, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Clive and Penhold. They also hosted a Fun Tournament in Bentley the end of May with 12 teams from Central Alberta each playing three fun games. It started three years ago with six teams and has grown. The U12 (under 12 years old) team, the only travelling competitive Bentley team, did very well considering they had to play against much bigger places that have more players and many more to choose from.
The team of 11 boys and girls was coached by Rob Swartz. They won nine of their ten regular season games and finished 2ns in the league out of 17 teams in regular season play. In playoffs they defeated Lacombe 1 by a 5-2 score in the semi-final but lost to Stettler 2-1 in the final. They had to play the final game with only seven players, which meant no subs, so each kid played the full time. They also competed in two tournaments. In the Sunbreaker tournament in Camrose they won their first two games only to lose out in the semi-final. In Stettler in the provincial qualifying tournament for the Central Alberta Soccer Association, they lost the final game to Stettler by one goal. Ryan Walker, president of Bentley Minor Soccer, also looks after all the equipment and field preparation. Michelle O’Conner handles registration and organizing of teams. Jill Fulton helps with House League organization. Juanita Bender is the Secretary/Treasurer as well as Ref/House League game coordinator. Bentley Minor Soccer is grateful for the sponsorship from the Bentley Farmer’s Market and the Cross Eyed Giraffe Café.
Dawson Nikirk and Dane Betts play in the cool shade during a Boys and Girls Club Summer Program outing on July 15. Submitted
