Lawn and garden enthusiasts in Grand Forks residents will have to work a little harder to keep things green. On Monday, council voted to implement Stage 2 water restrictions in Grand Forks and to also implement a yellow flag program to increase public awareness. Stage 2 restrictions limit watering to twice a week. Sprinkling is only permitted at residential, commercial and other non-agricultural properties on the following: EVEN addresses Saturdays and Tuesdays, while ODD addresses go Sundays and Wednesdays, between 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Automated sprinklers can water between 12 a.m. until 4 a.m. OR 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. but not both, on their respective sprinkling days (even—Saturday/Tuesday, odd Sunday/Wednesday). Flower gardens, vegetable gardens and newly planted lawns and landscapes may be hand watered at any time using a hand held nozzle. In the background information from David Reid, manager of operations, he states that Vancouver Island is currently at a level 4 (highest) drought rating, while the B.C. drought classification for the Boundary is 3, meaning very dry conditions. (Please note that provincial rating (drought classification) is different from the city’s water restriction stages) “During peak demand hours all city wells have to run to maintain an adequate level of water in the reservoirs to provide water to the public and to fire protection services,” he wrote. “During those hours there is no redundancy in • See WATER RESTRICTIONS page A5

Christina Lake’s own James Dergousoff has come away with a medal from the 2015 Pan Am Games this week. The 18-year-old was part of the Canadian men’s 4X100 metre relay team that won bronze for finishing third at the games on Saturday. Canada finished with a time of 3:34.40, 1.72 seconds behind the winners from Brazil. The United States finished with silver. Dergousoff, who swam with the Grand Forks Piranhas swim club growing up, also competed at the Pan Am Games in both the 100 metre and 200 metre breaststroke, finishing 11th in both. In the 100m, he finished fifth in heat 2 with a time of 1:03.28, 3.44 behind heat winner Franca Da Silva of Brazil. He then finished third in final B with a time of 1:02.57. Dergousoff had very similar results in the 200m, finishing fourth in heat 3 with a time of 2:16.30, 4.24 seconds behind heat winner Simon

Dergousoff’s parents, Theresa and Ted, were both in attendance at the pool in Toronto cheering on their son. “Overall the experience in Toronto was unbelievable,” said Theresa Dergousoff. “It was so much fun to be in the stands watching the swimming events. Every time a Canadian was on the blocks the crowd went crazy.” Theresa said she and her husband were nervous watching James get up on the starting blocks. “As parents we have sat in the stands and watched his races since he was six years old,” she said. “We are always proud of him no matter what.” Theresa said she thought her son did very well, particularly considering he was one of the youngest and least experienced members of Team Canada. Theresa said they were able to talk to James after all his races. “He told us he was enjoying the experience and was learning a lot,” she said. “He really enjoyed being part of the team.”

Lightning Local drone company taking off sparks new fires CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
There are 53 new wildfires in the Southeast Fire Centre region including 23 in the Boundary zone after the lightning and thunderstorm on Sunday evening/Monday morning. Almost all of the new fires are small spot-size fires and all are believed to be lightning-caused. The largest is a 25-hectare fire north of Midway and east of Ingram Creek. The fire is now 100 per cent contained. “We have a fire control line around 100 per cent of the fire,” said Jordan Turner, fire information officer for the Southeast Fire Centre. “As of Monday night, 75 per cent of the perimeter is blackened (burned) to within 30 metres to ensure it won’t spread beyond the containment.” Turner said there are 30 firefighters working on the blaze as well as two bulldozers and two water tenders. There are five new spot-size fires near Christina Lake. Two of the fires are near Texas Creek on the east side of the lake, two are east of the town of Christina Lake and one west of town. “There’s no immediate threat (to structures) at this time,” said Turner. “While these fires are visible from nearby communities, they are not threatening any structures at this time,” said Karlie Shaughnessy, fire information officer, in a press release. “Most of these fires are located in remote areas and are not affecting nearby communities.” The current fire danger rating for the Boundary is high.
Firefighting crews were immediately on several new fires in the Boundary, including five fires in the Christina Lake area. This fire was between Fife and Santa Rosa roads.

A local company has really taken off and is flying high after getting in on the ground floor of a burgeoning technology. Skydrone UAVS (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Services) is located at the Grand Forks Municipal Airport and is one of the leaders in drone technology in North America. Skydrone performs a number of inspection operations on hard-to-reach structures such as power lines, wind turbines, towers, bridges, substation facilies and many more in Canada, United States and Brazil. Ernest Ziesman, president and CEO of Skydrone, grew up in Grand Forks and was excited to be able to return and set up the company at the airport, which is the only one certified in all of Canada for drone testing and training. He still has family in the area and had been returning to Grand Forks quite often. Back in 1998, he actually set up the lighting system for the airport here. Ziesman got into the drone field after training under the Canadian Armed Forces where he received a degree in aerospace technology. “I went down to the United States and did a lot of work in the telecommunication field and with construction,” he said. “I came back to Canada and built 300 metres of power lines in Alberta and a dozen or so substations. At that point I realized it was dangerous to use helicopters. There are regular accidents involving death when using helicopters for maintenance on power lines.” Ziesman decided to create his own drone for specific use around power lines. “The technology was just emerging,” he said. “So everything just kind of fell into place: my aerospace degree, the telecommunications, because I back haul all the video back to servers I have in Vegas. I also have a company in Canada where I have a patented
surveillance product called CAMOPS.” Ziesman said he uses a lot of the same technology from the CAMOPS product on his Skydrone drones. Ziesman started Skydrone up last year and the business became incorporated in May 2014. The company currently operates eight drones of varying sizes. “What we want to do is take the manned variant out of it that puts human life in danger,” he said. “Anytime you’re less than 1,500 metres off the ground with an aircraft, whether it be a helicopter or fixed wing, you put yourself in a dangerous situation. You don’t have enough time to react if you have a failure. With the drone that’s no longer the case. If a drone crashes, the only one crying at the end of the day is me as I collect the broken parts with a garbage bag.” Ziesman said his company’s drone technology is unique and they’re holding on to a technological edge at this point. Ziesman said the advantages of the prototype drone are that it runs everything off an onboard mission computer and it uses a one-terabyte swappable hard drive. “It uses a 4K, 15 megapixel camera,” he said. “The body is 70g and the lens is about 110g and is interchangeable. On the other side is a 680X420 thermal camera. We can run them in conjunction and also overlay the two video and photo representations in the program that’s embedded in the computer itself and view them online while we’re flying and after the fact as well.” Ziesman added that he tries to incorporate as much Canadian technology as possible in the drones. The company hasn’t had too much work so far in B.C. although they did do an inspection for Boundary Electric. Currently Skydrone is preparing to do a stack inspection at a cement company in the Mojave Desert.
On Tuesday, July 28 7:30 pm Spotlight Films will be presenting

“It’s a 90 metre stack they use to dry their cement,” he said. “We’ll do a thermal and high definition video prior to their annual maintenance shutdown. Companies are finding that doing a third dimension inspection to their plants (is very beneficial).” Ziesman said they also been contracted by Fortis Alberta to do line assessment in Southern Alberta. There are other drone companies in B.C. and Canada, said Ziesman, but they lack the technological advances developed by Skydrone. “One thing they do not have is the mission computer package I have,” he said. “They’ll typically use a regular camera with an SD card and they’ll fly it around while it takes photos. One thing I’m doing with this data is I have georeference tag on it, airspeed, altitude, it basically has a flying weather station on it.” Ziesman also said his drones have 30 minutes of flight time compared to 10-15 minutes for the competitors. The drone is capable of carrying up to 100 cameras at one time, although Ziesman said they usually have four hooked up. “I can move them to different locations,” he said. “If I need to look up, say, at a component on a vibration damper on a power line, I can position
the camera on the top of the drone and look up instead of down or left instead of right.” Ziesman added that they can also do 3D ground mapping. The company has worked with forestry on fires in B.C. using 3D thermal maps although they are still awaiting certification to film live fires. “It can be a tool that can save lives,” he said. Ziesman said that he is excited about being able to offer courses in Grand Forks for drone piloting. “We’re the only airport right now in Canada that is certified by Transport Canada for drone flights,” he said. “We’re a certified drone testing and training facility here. We have a marked off area by Transport Canada that extends all the way to the end of the runway that we use for training.” Ziesman said they are just waiting for word from Transport Canada on licensing requirements before putting on the courses. “We do provide the course and we do have a lot of interest for it,” he said. “We want to use this for an advanced training facility for learning how to fly in power lines and around structures; how to do industrial inspections, and some of the longer range stuff.”

Business on cutting edge
There is no doubt that drone technology is one of the fastest rising industries in the world. Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), offer several advantages to helicopters, planes and other modes of transportation. They have already been used for years by the military for dangerous jobs such as bomb detection and for reconnaissance. Recently, drones have begun to be used by electric companies for power line inspections, as well as for inspecting any other hard to reach place such as towers, bridges or wind turbines. Drones are much more maneuverable and with no human being on board, a malfunction and crash doesn’t take lives. Drones are also reaching the mainstream as prices come down and are now being used for taking aerial photos or video and can even be used to deliver packages. Ernest Ziesman and his company Skydrone is right on the cutting edge and they are run right out of our Grand Forks Airport. In fact, our airport is the only one in Canada to be certified for drone testing and training. Once Transport Canada has approved licensing, Grand Forks is sure to be a destination for people across North America who want to work as drone pilots. Also looking to come into the airport is Marksman Industries. Owner/operator Kevin Marks was featured in a Gazette story several months back and he says he is still planning to move forward with the operation. Marksman Industries purchased 4.32 acres at the airport in September 2014 with the idea of putting a large aerospace maintenance and manufacturing facility in. “The plan is to move forward,” he told the Gazette. “The process is still under way but it will take some time.”
The naked truth about a GFI tradition
On The Ball CRAIG LINDSAY The summer can often be seen as a lazy, easy, breezy time of the year. Pretty much everybody takes his or her vacation at some point during July or August. School is out. The kids are relaxing or playing outside. That still happens, right? Outdoorsy people are doing outdoorsy things like camping, hiking and, while, not fishing in the Kettle because of the river fishing ban, but you get the point. Summer is also often seen as a slow time for us journalist types. Council only meets once a month; RKDB as well; school board is off; criminals are off enjoying the lake. I can’t confirm that last one but who knows. Sports is also seen
YOUR THOUGHTS?
as to slow down in the summer months. Obviously, there are no school sports; no hockey; no NHL or NBA or NFL; and so on. But that doesn’t mean the shelf is completely bare, sports-wise. The Grand Forks International (GFI) Baseball Tournament hit the town with some great ball and good times. I will admit not being the biggest baseball fan but when you get in the stands and the crowd is cheering, it’s a lot of fun. I went Friday night and was right in the middle of the excitement in the Blue Monster. The heat was oppressive but people found creative ways to cool down. There was also the famous (or infamous) GFI tradition of streakers which reared its head Friday night. Mercifully, the young men were very fast and agile. I still shudder when I hear the story of the one streaker years back who got stuck on the fence as he departed the field. Talk about a
squeeze play. Moving on to hockey, even though KIJHL league action doesn’t start until October, the summer is an important time for teams. The summer is when players are found and developed. The top players will be working hard on hitting the weight room and building muscle as well as improving cardio. For the Border Bruins, and every other team, it’s important to scout and recruit players for the next season. Winning on the ice is always about having talent. There are other factors, but really they don’t matter if you don’t have talent on the ice. The Bruins have finally found their coach, 33-year-old Emery Olauson. They went all the way to North Carolina to find him. It’s been a long process to find and hire a coach but the team feels it was worth it to find the right person. Obviously, the Bruins haven’t
been the most successful KIJHL franchise. There have been many more losses than wins. The team has also gone through four coaches in the last two years, which doesn’t head with stability. Management believes that this new coach will be the one to come in and get the franchise heading in the right direction. An object in motion tends to stay in motion and a still object tends to stay still. I don’t know physics but I know it’s tough to turn a team around. It’s hard to bring good, winning players in when a team is known as a perpetual loser. But it’s certainly not impossible. Grand Forks may be somewhat isolated and small, but so are Fernie and Kimberley–two teams that have done very well. Selkirk College men’s team in Castlegar went from last place with one win to league champions in just one year with a new coach and general manager who
were able to bring in some good talent and mold them into winners in short time. Hopefully, the same can be done here in Grand Forks with the Bruins. At the very least, let’s hope we get a hard-working, competitive team to watch. Lastly, I’d like to give a shout out to Christina Lake’s James Dergousoff, who recently competed for Canada in swimming at the Pan-American Games in Toronto. James shows how anyone can compete at a very high level even if you’re from a small place. It just takes a lot of hard work, commitment and dedication. Stay tuned to the Gazette for more Bruins hockey, baseball, swimming and other sports. As always, if you have any story ideas or a submission, email reporter@grandforksgazette.ca. Look for a feature on new Bruin coach/GM Olauson in next week’s Gazette.

It just makes sense for us to be water wise and be more conscious of how we consume water in this community.” The yellow flag program means if a resident violates the sprinkling restrictions, they would receive a yellow flag on their front lawn. “It is not meant to be punitive but is meant to increase awareness,” said Reid. “It is a simple reminder that there is watering restrictions in place and to adjust your sprinkling accordingly.” Ross said it’s important for residents to follow the water restriction guidelines. “We have bylaws in place and we have fines in place,” she said, “and we have protocols in place to enforce the bylaws.” Ross added that it’s also important to educate the public, which is the reasoning behind the yellow flag program.

CannaFest ready to rock the city
CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Tickets for the CannaFest rock ‘n roll festival are going fast. With legendary rockers such as Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Headpins, Jerry Doucette, Kenny Shields and Streetheart, Prism and Lee Aaron coming to Grand Forks, it’s sure to be a great time and a sell-out. CannaFest 2015 takes place Aug. 7 and 8 at James Donaldson Park. The show is put on by the B.C. Pain Society, which has put on similar events before. The event is being billed as “the hottest rock and roll festival in Canada.” Head organizer Chuck Varabioff said plans have gone very well and he is ready for a great festival. Varabioff is also a director with the pain society and ran the first CannaFest last year in Vancouver. “It went very well and I was happy with it,” said Varabioff. “I was born and raised in Grand Forks and spent a number of years here. I figured an outdoor concert in the area I was raised would be awesome. ” He said that with not many other musical events in the area, a large classic rock festival in Grand Forks would be a “nobrainer.” The concert kicks off Friday when the doors open at 2 p.m., followed at 3:30 p.m. with the opening ceremonies. Local band Mad Dog takes the stage at 4 p.m., followed by Colin Wiebe and then hard rocker Lee Aaron. Prism hits the stage next and are sure to thrill the crowd at James Donaldson Park. Capping off Friday evening will be Kenny Shields and Streetheart. Saturday the doors open at noon. The opening act, Whiskey Throttle, starts at 4 p.m. followed by rising band Franklins Dealers. At 7 p.m. the deuce gets set loose as Jerry Doucette takes the stage. Following Doucette is the incomparable juke box hero himself—Lou Gramm, the voice of Foreigner. Canadian rock legends The Headpins featuring Darby Mills then take the stage to end the show. Varabioff said that every band on the bill is all about classic rock. “Even the cover bands, they play mid-‘80s rock and roll,” he said. “Franklins Dealers is an
up and coming band but they do some mid-‘80s cover tunes. Their original stuff is absolutely incredible. It’s a modern classic rock sound.” Varabioff said that making the event a classic rock show just made sense given the history of the area. “The Yale, the Province, the Longhorn—you could go out anytime and listen to a great band back in the ‘80s in Grand Forks,” he said. “It just seems that bars and concerts and the classic rock is dying. I was born and raised around it.” Varabioff is happy to help revive the genre. He has gotten to know many of the “old” rockers through his business in downtown Vancouver. “Why not put together some classic rock because there’s nowhere you can see it,” he said, “and why not a festival with six or seven or 10 bands.” He also said that the ball park at James Donaldson is an ideal location for a concert with lots of room for a big crowd as well as plenty of space for vendors and the beer gardens. Varabioff added that the feedback regarding the event so far has been very positive. “Ticket sales have been very good,” he said. “The last three weeks have been incredibly strong. I think we’ll have a sell out; if not in advance then certainly at the gate.” Varabioff said working with the city on issues such as licensing, parking, camping and so on has been very positive. “It’s great to see the city get behind it,” he said. “They know the economic impact that it’s going to bring. If you look at 2,000 people coming from out of town spending $500 each— that’s a million bucks in the economy.” Varabioff said he could have run the festival in Vancouver again, but he felt the Grand Forks area needed the economic impact more than Vancouver. “It’s a smaller place and it’ll be a much more intimate affair,” he said. “People are behind it 100 per cent. I’m glad to see that.” Varabioff said he understood why the city wanted him to tone down the cannabis element to the festival; he stood firm on the festival name and theme but did agree that cannabis would not be sold on site. There will, however, be a
beer garden open from 5 to 10 p.m. and a separate smoking section. Varabioff said the bands are happy to come to Grand Forks and play on a large stage again. He said there will be an autograph tent where the band members will be signing shirts and pictures and other items. There will also be a couple of misting tents to keep audience members cool during the day when the sun’s out. Varabioff said there will also be a CannaFest pre-party at the Station Pub the night before (Thursday, Aug. 6) starting at 6:30 p.m. “All the bands that are in town that night will be there,” he said. “They might get up and play a song, they might not. It’ll be a lot of fun; an informal meet and greet. Come out and you might see some rock stars.” Varabioff expects that hotels and motels in the area will be very busy as will restaurants, grocery stores and many other businesses. For those wishing to camp there will be the usual camping at City Park. The City of Grand Forks will also be opening up Dick Bartlett Park, behind the aquatic centre, for camping, as well as parking. For more information and rates for camping, go to grandforks. ca. Varabioff is hopeful that attendees will be respectful of their festival’s neighbours by James Donaldson Park. “Not everyone is going to be on board with what we’re doing,” he said. “Having a loud concert, we don’t want people out there screaming and yelling and causing trouble.” Varabioff said he had tried to get a shuttle bus for bringing people to the event but wasn’t able to get anything set up. Selkirk Security from Trail has been hired to provide security at the event and Varabioff expects that although the local RCMP are not bringing in any extra officers, they will be in attendance. Varabioff added that he hopes the nearby neighbours are at the festival having a good time or if not, enjoying the music on their porches or roofs. “It happens once a year,” he said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun and pump a lot of money into the economy.”

A bench in honour of a popular local resident has been erected on the trail up to the top of Observation Mountain on July 6. Peter Perepelkin was an active Rotarian, local business owner and a staunch supporter of trails in the area. Before passing away in November 2014, Perepelkin pledged to donate $10,000 to the Grand Forks Community Trails Society over 10 years. The work installing the bench was done by the City of Grand Forks. A private helicopter was used to get the bench up to the spot on the mountain. “We had picked the site with Dave Reid (City of Grand Forks manager of operations) earlier in the summer,” said Chris Moslin, president of the trails society. “The crew had gone up and prepared the site before hand. On July 6, they got the helicopter up in the air and installed the bench.” Moslin said they were hoping to get the bench up earlier in June but there were delays over insurance and other issues. “It’s about 300 metres up there from the kiosk at the (old) wildlife hall,” he said. “It’s quite steep.”
Moslin said that dedicating the bench to Perepelkin was an easy decision and a great way to commemorate him. “Peter had granted the trails society $10,000 to be given over 10 years, $1,000 a year, to improve the accessibility of the Observation Mountain trail,” said Moslin. “That kind of matched the city’s objectives of creating a viable trails network.” Moslin said the bench is a standard city bench and matches the other city benches in town. “It marks a real concerted effort by the city to extend its city trails networks to the top of Observation Mountain,” he said. There will also be a commemorative plaque to Perepelkin installed at the entrance to the trail in the near future. “He was such a stellar citizen in our community for so long,” said Moslin. “Many of us here have fond memories of Peter. For us at the trails society, we were thrilled that Peter thought enough of our efforts to sponsor us.”
Popular trail virtually blocked
CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
A recent storm has made access to a popular trail destination virtually impossible, said a local trail aficionado. “We live in this countryside where you get these freak winds coming down the cracks of the mountains,” said Chris Moslin, president of the Grand Forks Community Trails Society. Moslin said he noticed sev-
6
eral cedar trees down blocking the trail to Fishermen Creek. He figures he was the first to discover it as anyone else seeing it would have likely called him to let him know. He has contacted the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations who would be responsible for cleaning up the debris. “I have been in contact with the land manager,” he said. “He’ll probably go in there and inspect it and see what kind of
salvage operation they can do.” Moslin said it’s about an 800-metre trail from the Trans Canada Trail to the falls at Fishermen Creek. “It’s a very scenic area,” he said. “It’s a local treasure. People really enjoy going there. It’s pretty much impossible to get to the falls now. We are going to get together with the ministry and see what we can do to get that windfall salvaged and repair that trail.”

OUTDOOR WATER USE RESTRICTIONS STAGES: THE CITY OF GRAND FORKS IS CURRENTLY AT STAGE 2 FOR WATERING RESTRICTIONS
WATER EVERY DROP COUNTS Sprinkling will be monitored by Bylaw Enforcement.
Abiding to sprinkler regulations pays dividends. When using water responsibly and within regulations, power and operational costs are reduced saving our community money. Energy reduction also relates to less greenhouse gas emissions and less draw from our aquifer. A reminder that water restrictions are in place in the City of Grand Forks.
Here are some easy tips to help you conserve water wherever you are:
Days of Watering: Sprinkling is only permitted at residential, commercial and other non-agricultural properties as follows:
Save Water in Your Home
“EVEN” numbered civic addresses: Watering is only permitted on Saturdays and Tuesdays, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. “ODD” numbered civic addresses: Watering is only permitted on Sundays and Wednesdays, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Automatic Timed Underground Sprinklers can water between 12:00 a.m. (midnight) until 4:00 a.m.* Homeowners are encouraged to purchase a timer for their outside taps and water between 12:00 a.m. (midnight) and 4:00 a.m. as per the requirements for timed underground sprinklers.
CITY OF GRAND FORKS CURRENT STAGE
STAGE 2: TWICE A WEEK WATERING
• Washing of driveways and vehicles is not allowed, except for commercial car washes. • Flower gardens, vegetable gardens and newly planted lawns and landscapes may be hand watered at any time using a hand held nozzle. Sprinkling is NOT permitted between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. during any day at any time of the year.
STAGE 3: ONCE A WEEK WATERING
Days of Watering: Sprinkling is only permitted at residential, commercial and other non-agricultural properties as follows: “EVEN” numbered civic addresses: Watering is only permitted on Saturdays, between the hours of 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. “ODD” numbered civic addresses: Watering is only permitted on Sundays, between the hours of 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Automatic Timed Underground Sprinklers can water between 12:00 a.m. (midnight) until 4:00 a.m.*
STAGE 4: NO OUTDOOR WATERING
No person shall use water outdoors for any purpose. * Properties equipped with an automated time clock sprinkler system may only sprinkle between the hours of 12:00 p.m. (midnight) to 4:00 a.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. BUT NOT BOTH on the days permitted by the sprinkling regulations as described above. For a full list of sprinkling regulations please visit: www.grandforks.ca or contact City Hall at 7217 4th Street, Grand Forks, 250-442-8266.
Tip 1: Fix that leaky toilet and save hundreds of litres of water every year. To find out if your toilet is leaking, put food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a leak. Tip 2: Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you’ll save more than 500 litres per month. Tip 3: Invest in water savings. Energy efficient front-loading clothes washers use 3550% less water and 30% less energy than standard washers. Use your clothes washer for full loads only. Tip 4: Upgrade older toilets with water efficient models. Tip 5: Install water-saving aerators on all of your faucets and water-saving shower heads. Tip 6: When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. If your dishwasher is new, cut back on rinsing altogether. Newer models clean more thoroughly than older ones. Tip 7: Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water house plants. Tip 8: Keep a bottle of drinking water in the fridge, as running tap water to cool it off for drinking water is wasteful. Tip 9: When shaving, fill the sink instead of letting the water run continuously and save 10 to 20 litres of water each time. Also, turn off the water after you wet your toothbrush.
Save Water Outside And Still Have A Healthy Lawn And Garden! Tip 1: Lawns and gardens require only 35 millimetres (~1.5 inches or enough to fill a tuna can) of water per week during warm weather. Less is needed during spring, fall, and cooler weather. Tip 2: Do not over-water to compensate for expected dry periods. Soil cannot store extra water. Tip 3: Water lawns every three to five days, rather than for a short period of time every day. This will help grow deeper roots, making your lawn more tolerant to hot summer temperatures. Tip 4: Raise your lawn mower blade to cut grass, no lower than eight centimetres (three inches). Longer grass also helps feed the roots, reducing the need for it to quickly re-grow. Tip 5: Choose water-efficient plants and consider xeriscaping. On days when it has rained, water your lawn less and turn off your automatic irrigation system. Tip 6: Install a rain barrel and use the water you collect for your lawn, garden, and/or indoor plants. Collecting rainwater for watering needs uses very little energy compared to watering with treated water, which require enormous amounts of energy to clean and pump it to your tap. Tip 7: Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water plants. Tip 9: Adjust sprinklers so that water does not run down your driveway, sidewalks, or street. Tip 10: Water roots rather than leaves using a drip irrigation system. Tip 11: Adding a few inches of mulch to you gardens keeps your plant’s roots cool and moist. Tip 12: Practice “grass-cycling”. Rather than throwing away your lawn’s grass clippings, leave them on your lawn as mulch, this will save time, money, and water.
Yellow Flag Program The City is implementing a yellow flag program to remind water users about the current sprinkling regulations that are in effect. If you get a yellow flag on your front lawn it means that you were watering outside of the times allowed. This is not meant to be punitive but is meant to increase awareness. It is a simple reminder that there is watering restrictions in place and to adjust your sprinkling accordingly. To find out more about our current sprinkling regulations please visit: www.grandforks.ca

The Christina Lake Stewardship Society’s (CLSS) Young Stewards of the Boundary Youth Program is well under way this summer. This program allows parents and children to learn together about the ecology, and biology of Christina Lake, as well as how to conserve it. Sessions run every Thursday from 10 -11:30 a.m. in the CLSS’s Interpretive Gallery and are by donation. Each week throughout the summer will feature a different theme ranging from “Discover Water” to “Beautiful Birds.” Most themes begin with a presentation, which are followed by a nature walk or outdoor activity, and finished up with a craft. Past sessions have included “Fantastic Fish,” which involved learning about the Kokanee life cycle, playing the Spawning Game, and painting cut-out fish for the “Wildlife Walk of Fame,” located at the baseball field fence by the Community Hall.

Firebells and Fanfare, the antique fire apparatus showcase, returns to Grand Forks this year and is partnering with the Park in the Park car show. Firebells will kick off Saturday, Aug. 15 with a parade in the morning starting at 11 a.m. at the arena parking lot. The vehicles will then travel downtown to Market Avenue where they will be on display. They will also be on display at City Park on Sunday during Park in the Park. Lawrence Morgan, co-organizer of Park in the Park, said it’s a natural fit to pair up with the classic fire equipment showcase. The addition of the classic fire trucks has really added to the draw of Park in the Park, he said. “The response we’ve got has been unbelievable. You think there were lots of cars and lots of people in town last year? With the fire department here and the old fire trucks, this town is going to be crazy.” Morgan said among the old fire trucks there will also be a hot rod fire truck from Omak, Washington. “He’s one of our biggest sponsors,” said Morgan. “He said he’s bringing his custom hot rod fire truck. I don’t know what it looks like, it’s going to be a surprise. This guy has one heck of a car collection.” Fire chief Dale Heriot said plans for Firebells and Fanfare are going well and the fire department is excited to be bringing the antique fire apparatus showcase to town. “We’re just getting everything in order,” he said. “We’re just rounding up the horses. We’re going to have nine horses towing three units in the parade. We’ve got something like 36 or 37 units secured to be in the parade, which is very good.” Heriot said the fire department is looking forward to putting on a display of some of the vintage fire truck pumpers at City Park during the car show. “We’ll be doing a pumping demonstration,” he said. “There will be the Victoria Fire Department’s 1899 steam pumper will be doing there pumping demonstration and there will be a couple of other units as well.”
Music fills Gyro Park That GIrl and Earl performed Wednesday (July 15) at Music in the Park at Gyro Park in front of a good crowd. The music plays every Wednesday night from 7 until 9 p.m. through until the end of August. Tonight (July 22), sees Good Enough for Dad take the stage. The following week will be John Vere. Craig Lindsay photo
Heriot said the event will be fun for the whole family. “Come on out and have a look,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for us to show off all the antique equipment. What we try and do is get different ages of fire trucks from throughout the years. So people will see some of the oldest trucks from the 1800s equipment right up to our new ladder truck. So it gives people a chance to see how we’ve evolved over the years.” Heriot said the fire department is also hosting their annual Ladder-a-Thon that weekend as well. The Ladder-a-Thon will take place from 10 a.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday at Overwaitea and will raise money for a charity chosen by the volunteer association. Former fire chief Blair Macgregor, one of the co-organizers of the showcase along with Manfred Bialon, said the event is shaping up well. “We’ve got good response so far,” said Macgregor. “We’ve got them coming in from as far as Calgary.” He said another one of the highlights of the show will be an 1866 hand pumper coming from Kelowna that was originally made in Germany. “It’s one where you put four firefighters on each side and they pump,” said Macgregor. “We’ll have everything from hand reels from the early 1800s right up to brand new. Some are completely restored units while others are almost original.” The Grand Forks Fire/Rescue Department will be showing off their restored 1901 steam pumper as well as a 1929 chemical wagon fire truck and a 1944 fire truck. In addition, the new ladder truck will be in the parade and on display. The new truck will also be used for the Laddera-Thon event. Macgregor said that restoring vintage fire trucks is a natural hobby for a lot of firefighters. “There’s a lot of volunteer money and hard labour that has got into them over the years,” he said. “It’s the same in many towns. They’re restored and shown in parades.” This year’s Firebells and Fanfare is the second one in Grand Forks. The first one was back in 2010 and was quite popular. The event moves around the province, usually held once a year in a different location each time.

Pet lovers now have another choice when it comes to fulfilling their pet needs. Total Pet recently opened up next to Subway on Central Avenue in the old Video Express location. Staff opened the doors on July 7 and the store has been open ever since. They anticipate holding an official grand opening in the fall. “We sell good quality pet foods and supplies at competitive prices,” said manager Paula Stooshinoff. “We are talking about providing pets in the future we just want to get our inventory and sales before we introduce living creatures.” Stooshinoff said they would likely start with smaller animals such as birds and fish. Total Pet has 17 stores throughout B.C. including one in Castlegar. The head office and owner is in Kelowna. Stooshinoff said they cater their products to the discerning pet owner. “We have quite a few different brands of good dog food, cat food, fish food and supplies,” she said. “We also have treats, toys, bedding, crates and more.” Ashley Snow, manager of Total Pet in Kelowna, was in Grand Forks to help train staff. She said all their products are high quality, well-sourced and well-

made from reputable companies. “Our inventory right now is quite flexible,” said Snow. “We’ve brought in our base stock. We’re reaching out to the people of Grand Forks to find out what they want. We can cater to them that way.” The nice thing about Total Pet, said Snow, is that they can come into a community and really specialize the store for that area. “We’re not all the same across B.C.,”

Spotlight Films is happy to present a bonus film in their repertoire. This is the first time a film has been shown in the month of July, a family film that is suitable for all ages. That makes your season’s pass even more valuable. Remember, if you are unable to attend this film you can share your pass with someone who can use it. Come to the GEM Theatre on Tuesday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m., tickets are available at the door for non-members. This film, a Brilliant Young Mind, is 111 minutes long. In a world difficult to comprehend, Nathan struggles to connect with those around him— most of all his loving mother—but finds comfort in numbers. When Nathan is taken under the wing of unconventional and anarchic teacher Mr. Humphreys, the pair forge an unusual friendship and Nathan’s talents win him a place on the U.K. team at the International Mathematics Olympiad. From suburban England to bustling Taipei and back again, Nathan builds complex relationships as he is confronted by the irrational nature of love (IMDb). This heart-warming and life-affirming story follows the unconventional and hilarious relationship between student and teacher (whose roles are often reversed) and the unfathomable experience of first love—even when you don’t understand what love is. (© Pinnacle Films) A big thank you to all our generous sponsors. Like our page on Facebook to stay up to date on upcoming presentations. See you at the movies!

Ladies go to provincials
CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
(From left) Tori Stavenjord, coach Darryl Funk, Maddie Baia, Celeste Deal, Ang McIver and Cass Funk of the Merchants all-star team play pepper at practice Wednesday. Submitted photo
A regional all-star team consisting of players from the Boundary Ladies Fastpitch League will be heading to provincials this weekend. The Boundary Merchants team will travel to Summerland and compete at the women’s provincial “C” softball tournament from July 24-26. The team is coached by Darryl Funk and Rob Stavenjord of Grand Forks and consists of Cass Funk, Kathryn Williamson, Tori Stavenjord, Sheryl McIver, Breann Hallstrom, Celeste Deal, Dayna Esson and Ang McIver of Grand Forks, Geena Hall of Christina Lake, Jay Walker and Sarah Green of Rock Creek, and Gina Kucher and Maddie Baia of Midway. Rob Stavenjord said the coaches had been spreading the word about putting together a team to travel to provincials and the response was very positive. “As soon as league play was done we began to practice two or three times a week,” he said.
“Since the roster is split between Grand Forks and Greenwood/Midway/Rock Creek, players’ practices have alternated between Grand Forks and Greenwood. The team has now gone through three weeks of practices and are feeling strong and confident in their ability to compete in Summerland.” The team is playing a home and away series with a team from Trail, which is also going to the provincials. On July 14, the teams met at Christina Lake where the Merchants won a close 3-2 battle. The teams play in Trail on July 21 for the second and final game of the series. The Merchants open up the provincial tournament on July 25 with a game against the Fleetwood Bandits from Surrey. The team’s second game is later that day against the Abbotsford Fireballs. Other teams in the Merchants division are Trail, Golden Ears (Surrey) and Kitsilano (Vancouver).

CHURCH DIRECTORY A summer event called “Wilderness Escape: Where God Guides and Provides” will be hosted at First Baptist Chrch, 2495-76th Ave., from Aug. 4-7. Kids step back in time at Wilderness Escape, exploring some of the adventures faced by Moses and the Israelites. Kids and adults participate at the Israelite Camp, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Bible-times snacks, visit Moses, and collect Bible Memory Buddies to remind them of God’s Word. Plus, everyone learns to look for evidence of
Amazing love is our highest goal
Make love your highest goal. It doesn’t get any more clear or direct than that. We have many diverse goals. When I was in elementary school GABE WARRINER all the way through to post secondary River Valley education, one of the most fundamenCommunity tal aspects of learning was goal setting. Church We were taught to set achievable goals each and every day. In the Bible, we are told to make love our highest goal. Jesus gave His church one command, to love as He loved. The love we are talking about is called agape in the Greek language, which is what the New Testament was written in. This agape word is translated into English as the word love. It’s a type of love that is unconditional. It has no strings attached. It’s patient. It’s kind. It always forgives. It’s humble. It’s protective. It perseveres. It never fails. It’s always full of hope. Jesus set the example by washing his disciples feet at a time in the Middle East when everyone wore sandals and before reclining at the table to eat the household servant would normally wash all the guests feet. Jesus did this for His followers and then He gave His followers the command to do the same thing. It’s quite an example of the kind of love we are to have as our highest goal. It seems like it is an impossible goal to achieve. And many would say that it is, and that it was meant to be that way so that at all times and on all occasions we would have to depend entirely on the Holy Spirit of God to help us live as God would have us live and love as He would have us love. It seems counterproductive to set a goal that is impossible to achieve. The reality is that it is only impossible if we try to achieve the goal without God’s help. With His help the goal is entirely achievable. It’s possible to love always, and to love all people regardless of race, nationality, beliefs, traditions, temperaments, opinions, and personalities. It’s an incredible love. In church we sing about it all the time. We call it amazing love. It’s our highest goal. I hope you make it your highest goal as well!

Celebration of Life Judith Clare Acres June 9, 1943 – March 30, 2015
Judy passed peacefully in Coquitlam, BC after battling Alzheimer’s. Survived by her husband of 48 years, Michael, daughter Hilary, son Graham (Sandi), granddaughters Kelsey and Teghan, and welcomed to heaven by granddaughter Brynne.
Join us as we celebrate Judy’s life on Saturday, August 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the Seniors’ Centre in City Park, Grand Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or the BC Cancer Agency are appreciated.
James R. Holtz It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of James R Holtz on Saturday, July 18th in Grand Forks, B.C. following complications from kidney cancer. Jim was born May 2, 1946 in Moline, Illinois. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire and received a BA from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. In 1968, unable to condone the war in Vietnam, he came to Canada with his first wife, Carol. The U.S.’s loss was Canada’s gain. Jim completed his B.Ed at UBC and taught English and Theatre Arts at George Elliot Secondary School in Winfield for 33 years. During this time, he and Carol raised two exceptional daughters, Susan and Rebecca, both of whom Jim was extremely proud. In 1991 Jim remarried and enjoyed 26 amazing years with his second wife Judy Morrice. They loved and complemented each other, enjoying their wonderful friends, their cabin on Shuswap Lake, their acreage in Grand Forks and on many sailing vacations. Theirs was an exceptional love that both he and Judy felt was a rare gift indeed and Judy will treasure always. A man with many interests, Jim was an avid sailor, both racing and for pleasure and was a past Commodore at Kelowna Yacht Club. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast who enjoyed riding throughout his life. In addition he was a coach, a poet, a novelist, a playwright and a gifted actor and director. Truly a renaissance man. Throughout his illness Judy rarely left his side, and together with his daughters, was with him at the end. He will be greatly missed by Judy, Susan and Rebecca, by Rebecca’s two sons, Logan and Luke, grandsons who Jim loved dearly. He will also be mourned by a host of friends who will miss his laughter, his stories and wonderful dry humour. A celebration will be held at Kelowna Yacht Club, 1370 Water Street, Kelowna from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 23 to honour Jim with humour and fond memories. Condolences may be sent to: jimholtzfamily@gmail.com .
