Creston town council opted not to revisit the current fee structure for criminal record checks after a discussion at the July 14 regular council meeting. Since the town assumed responsibility for paying a portion of local policing costs in 2012 it has also benefited from revenues generated by criminal record check charges. The fee of $35 was determined

after a survey of fees charged in similarly sized communities in the province. Volunteers who require criminal record checks to perform their duties are exempted, as are town employees. “A waiver for town employees is given as the town would be both the payer and payee,” finance director Steffan Klassen said in a report to council. The issue of fees was brought up to discuss whether students who

require criminal record checks for studies in programs such as nursing and social work should be charged. “I think it is just part of the cost of education,” said Coun. Kevin Boehmer. “Just pay the $35 and get on with it.” Coun. Jen Comer disagreed, arguing that every dollar counts for students who are borrowing money to pay their way through post-secondary education.

Community invited to watch slo-pitch games BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

For over 25 years, local baseball diamonds have been hubs of activity a few nights a week as Creston Valley Slopitch Association members enjoy their sport. And they want the public to enjoy it, too — by coming out and watching a game. “Come out to a game and see what it’s all about,” said president Len Ringstad. From Tuesday through Friday evenings, any of the six diamonds (Lister and Canyon parks, Lower Kootenay and the Creston and District Community Complex) will host some of the league’s

19 teams, a number up from a low of 12 not too many years ago. About 250 people, including players and volunteers, take part each season, with some jumping in as soon as their “other” sport is finished. “The first thing they do is put their curling broom away and pick up their ball gloves,” said Ringstad. Members vary in age, with many in the 25-45 range, and with two over-50 teams, Coffin Dodgers No. 1 and No. 2. The game is played much like baseball, but with the teams following Creston rules, such as 10 batters on each team batting in each inning, and no bunting, sliding into base or base stealing. “The rules are designed to be recreNOW OPEN MONDAYS 250-428-SHOW (7469) Showtimes: 7:30pm

ARK networking co-ordinator Raff Gaudio conceived the event to bring the Christian community together to hear “testimonies of how people have come to freedom” Steinruk said. BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Society of BC has nearly $2,600 more to work with, thanks to the efforts of three local golfers. Creston Golf Club pro Brian O’Keefe teamed up with his sons, Kowan and Karson, to collect pledges for the annual ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) fundraiser that saw 42 B.C. golf courses participate this year. “I’ve been doing this for about 10 years, since I was back in Shuswap,” Brian said. “I’m going to keep doing it as long as I am able. I had a friend in Shuswap who was diagnosed with ALS and it’s important to me to help find a cure.” O’Keefe admits it was his sons who did the heavy lifting this year. Karson teed off at 4:30 a.m. June 25 and golfed eight rounds of 18 holes. Kowan then took over in the heat of the day, doing

“We could never have taken on the project without Peter Ashmore,” she said. “We didn’t have the necessary skills in our agency but we were fortunate to be able to hire him at the outset.” Ashmore’s expertise helped First Steps become the first licensed infanttoddler daycare in the community. “The school district had eight young moms in need and Peter felt we could pull it off. And we did.” Providing daycare for children from birth to 36 months, First Steps allowed young moms to continue their education while knowing their children were in good hands. “We are pretty sad about the closure,” Naeve admitted. “It has really been a twoyear process. Consulting with Peter and other experts, we realized that our only

another eight rounds before his dad took over at 6 p.m. “It was really, really hot out there,” Kowan said with a laugh. “I don’t know how many bottles of water I went through, but it was a lot.” Brian completed three rounds before

darkness set in at about 9:30 p.m., bringing his threesome’s total to 19 rounds, or 342 holes. He once did 227 holes on his own in Shuswap. “But I was younger then,” he laughed. “It’s nice to have the boys on board now!”

option was to close the centre.” The need for day care remains, she said, but the model had outlived its time. “We couldn’t always fill spaces and the demand shifted for a different level of care,” she said. “Changes to create a one-year parental leave affected all infant-toddler day cares in the country, because infants are now usually cared for at home. And our space” — in a School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) building on Canyon Street, PCSS property — “didn’t allow us to add enough older kids to keep the program viable.” Families want their children in one daycare facility, Naeve said, and First Steps struggled as a result. Staffing, too, became an increasingly challenging issue. “It is extremely difficult to get qualified staff and the low wages in the sector make it more difficult.” “All of the Early Childhood Education-trained staff worked in the daycare as a labour of love,” she said.

“As part of their work they moved beyond the ECE mandate to provide things like healthy snacks and a safe environment to creating an interactive and developmentally appropriate experience for the children. The skills and experiences gained through this care will always serve the children in good stead.” As staff prepared for the end of their jobs and parents were given help to find alternatives to First Steps, the job of disposing of equipment and materials accumulated in the last 16 years began. Naeve said much of it went to parents and other daycares, with community partners and even the gymnastics club benefitting. “The last two truckloads went to the Gleaners,” she said. “This is the first program we have closed during my time as executive director of Valley Community Services,” she said. “We feel as good as we can under the circumstances.”

quick fix after council directed staff to go ahead with an amendment to the zoning bylaw. Recently, property owners in the area have been confronted by a problem property insurance companies have discovered. Under current laws and bylaws, municipal services director Ross Beddoes said, “Should a legally nonconforming structure (which is how residential homes and apartments are zoned in the area) be destroyed (by fire, for instance) more than 75 per cent of its value above the foundations, then that property loses its non-conforming status and must not be rebuilt. “As insurance companies are becoming aware of this restriction,” he said, “they are refusing to provide replace value insurance to the residential properties along Northwest Boulevard, which fall within the highway service commercial zone.” Council directed staff to move quickly to amend the area’s zoning to resolve

the issue in favour of residential property owners. •The proposed adoption of a cemeteries regulations and operations bylaw was put on hold when acting mayor Karen Unruh — Mayor Ron Toyota was in Castlegar to attend a Highway 3 Mayors’ and Chairs’ Coalition meeting — pointed out a potential issue in the bylaw. Staff will return with a report before adoption goes to a vote. •Klassen presented council with a first-ever mid-year financial update showing where spending and revenue budget projections were at the halfway point of the fiscal year. He agreed with Boehmer that the information is not necessarily helpful because the budget process does not break down revenues and expenses by month. Town manager Lou Varela said staff would continue to work with council in an effort to create financial updates that provide a clearer picture of the town’s finances during the year.

Fundraiser planned for burned Porthill firefighter SALLY BALCAEN Bonners Ferry Herald A Porthill man was severely injured in a house fire on July 10. Between 5:45 and 5:50 a.m., neighbors saw smoke rising from Andrew Durette’s home at 1317 Porthill Loop Rd. Hall Mountain Fire Association, a volunteer fire group of which Durette is a member, was on scene within eight to 12 minutes. Durette had managed to get out of the house and was lying unconscious on the porch. The heat from the fire was so intense that no one was able to reach him. Neighbors were able to get Durette to roll towards them and moved him away to the front yard until Boundary Volunteer Ambulance, the EMS crew and Life Flight arrived. Durette has 40 percent of his body burned, with second and third degree burns, 10 percent of which are severe third degree on his feet, hands, back, and head. He is responding to doctors and family, but has a long recovery ahead of him. Durette’s entire home was lost, along with two family dogs. The structure fire was finally contained around 10:30 to 11a.m. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. “I just want to compliment Hall Mountain Fire, Boundary Volunteer Ambulance, our medic crew and Life Flight,” said Wallace Nyberg, a volunteer firefighter at Hall Mountain. “Training came together and partnerships that we've already established in the past came together and worked very well. I couldn't be happier with our men and women out there that did their jobs correctly.” A fundraiser starts at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Big Daddy’s Bar and Grill in Porthill, Idaho, with a spaghetti feed that runs until 5:30, followed by an auction at 6. For more information, contact Nyberg at hallmountainfire.training@gmail.com.

Clubs stolen from sheds BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

At least 25 storage sheds at the Creston Golf Club were broken into on July 12. In a letter to shed owners, club president Len Mosher said that the main gate was not breached, indicating the thieves walked in from the road, then cut locks to gain access to sheds. “The perpetrators appear to have known what they were looking for, stealing mainly high-end sets of clubs,” he said. “They cut the locks off a number of sheds, in some cases accessing multiple sheds through one door.” Anyone with information about the break-ins or who has been approached by someone selling high-end golf clubs is asked to contact Creston RCMP at 250-428-9313.

Cartwheel offering farm-to-door service

I

n the Creston Valley, fresh produce can be found with little difficulty. But it’s even easier to eat veggies when they’re delivered right to your door, courtesy of Cartwheel Farm. More than 30 clients are taking advantage of the delivery service, which Laura Hannant and Nigel Francis started last month, offering weekly drop-offs in three sizes. Story and “A number of people are young families,” said photo by Hannant. “It’s more conBrian venient than making sure Lawrence everyone gets packed up and off to the market every Saturday. This is a way for people to not worry about it week to week.” Each delivery includes — depending, of course, on a variety of factors — a salad green, another green, onions or garlic, a root vegetable, tomatoes and one or two random selections. “We try to have something different and new,” said Francis. “Mostly every week, there’s something a little bit weird,” added Hannant. The random selections have included, for example, kohlrabi, and have had clients reaching out to each other for recipes and preparation suggestions. “I think it has people talking more about what they’re eating,” she said. Even the expected items are a bit different. Francis and Hannant have chosen varieties for taste, not uniformity, and some are in unexpected shades and colours — such as their black tomatoes. The couple — Hannant from Ottawa, Ont., and Francis from Meadow Lake, Sask. — moved to the East Shore in 2009 and to Creston in 2012. They worked at the College of the Rockies, and later partnered with the owners of a Canyon farm before making the big leap to start their own farm this year. Neither had really been involved with farming or gardening before they moved to Creston, although Francis’s grandparents had a small farm — it skipped a generation, I guess,” he said — but both already found it was easier to eat produce when it was delivered. “When we were in school, we used a home delivery program,” Hannant said. “It worked really well for us.”

Laura Hannant and Nigel Francis at their Erickson farm.

She and Francis both work in the garden, he full-time and she part-time, which, at just under a half-acre, serves their clients and the Yasodhara Ashram. And their own table, as well. “Sometimes, we only eat vegetables,” said Hannant. “And I graze all day,” said Francis. They’ve already discovered some of the ups and downs of farming, with this summer’s intense heat too much for the spinach and arugula, as well as, likely, the parsnips. “You get one shot at doing it,” said Hannant.

“Farming can be really emotional,” said Francis. “That’s not something I expected. Sometimes there’s stress, sometimes joy and excitement, and disappointment — all kinds of things.” But the positives vastly outweigh the negatives. “It gives extra motivation when you know it’s going to someone that wants it,” Francis said. “We know when we’re taking care of the food where it’s going,” added Hannant. “That’s kind of awesome. With most things, you’re going to have someone saying, ‘That’s my favourite.’ ”

Older men, for example, are enjoying fresh broccoli. “They said it was the first time they’ve liked eating broccoli,” said Hannant. “They said it tasted sweet.” Even after only several weeks into their first season, the couple already has a wait list for next year, and plan to keep making deliveries until the first week of November — something they can’t help but enjoy. “To turn up with a delivery and have kids run at you like you’re Santa Claus is pretty awesome,” Hannant said. I recently read a blog about a subject that has long fascinated me. It’s that old issue of early versus late. You know, the battle between the guy who shows up early for a dinner invitation, just as you are entering a critical phase in preparing dinner, and the perpetually late gal who somehow keeps everyone waiting until she can sashay into the room, blowing off her tardiness with a shrug of her shoulders. I use the gender references as examples only — I doubt that either gender can lay claim to superiority on either side of the issue. In the blog the writer, a female, put forth the argument that chronically late people just can’t stand to waste time waiting, which is what happens when they arrive early. Instead, they get caught up doing other things and the result is they are pretty much later for everything. Hogwash, I say. People who don’t like to waste time can generally arrange their schedule to arrive on time. And there is no more or less energy expended to get to a given place early or late, so I think there have to be other reasons. In my opinion, chronically late people are simply disrespectful of others, and of their efforts not to be late. They are making a statement that basically says, “I am more important than you are,” or, at the very least, “My time is more important than yours.” So it comes down to an ego thing.

Who hasn’t experienced the latecomer, huffing and puffing and putting on a performance as they enter the room, making sure everyone knows they have arrived and that they have made a great effort in

Before continuing with our study of the 13th century text, “Mountain and Rivers Sutra” written by Zen Master Eihei Dogen, the founder of Soto Zen Buddhism in Japan, I want to talk about the main reason Dogen’s essay seems so difficult and obscure. We in the West have been educated in a particular way and because of that when we look at Dogen’s writing we naturally try to understand it as we would any other text that we have read in high school or college. But Dogen is not writing this essay so we can say what it means on an exam or employ it in conversation or apply it in activity and work. This is how we usually think about spiritual writings. Dogen’s way is not like that. Reading and studying Dogen’s writing has a very different purpose than what we usually meet when reading most spiritual writings. To understand Dogen, we have to enter into a bigger mind and Dogen’s main purpose is to give us access to this greater mind. This is very difficult — difficult to enter, and difficult to sustain. If you are doing the mind-expanding practices that I have been suggesting over the last few months, you have probably caught yourself many times as

you notice that your thinking has returned to the same mindset that you have always had. We all do this. I’ve often come up against a phrase like “the green mountains are always walking” with my usual mindset. It’s

doing so. Or, as a friend recalled during a recent conversation on the subject, the perpetually late arrival to a public gathering. My friend recalled a woman who always arrived late for a church service, then sashayed her way to a seat near the front to make certain that everyone in the congregation could see her, and what she was wearing. “It was a theatrical performance,” my friend said. I am, typically, an early arriver. But I don’t show up for the actual appointment too early, because I don’t like inconveniencing others by doing so. Being easily amused, I can always find a way to kill a few minutes by checking my iPhone, people watching or having a subtle meditation session. When I am travelling or expecting to be earlier than necessary, I always carry reading material. I never think that I am wasting time, my own or that of others.

Lorne Eckersley

The desire to be early is not a practice I arrived at with a conscious decision. I seem to be hardwired that way. My wife is an on-time person, rarely late and even more rarely early. Given the choice I would probably opt for her approach, but I get antsy when I haven’t set out at a time that virtually guarantees I will be at an appointment just a touch early. It has its advantages, too. I always get a good seat in a group setting, which for me means off to the side or back, where I can get a good view of proceedings — I dislike being front and centre almost as much as I hate arriving late. When I am the one who has arranged an appointment and it is taking place on my turf, I have little patience for those who aren’t on time. My general rule of thumb is 10 minutes, which generally allows for sufficient flexibility for people who have been legitimately delayed. But if I know the person is a chronic latecomer, I might pare that time down to 5 minutes, at which point I will leave the room and perhaps even the building. Point made, even if the other person thinks I have been a jerk about this particular foible. Like many social issues, the late versus early debate produces a great chasm between the sides and neither seems to be particularly open to the others’ point of view. Personally, I am always willing to listen. Just make sure you are on time if you want to tell me why it’s OK to be late. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

A Zen'sEye View Kuya Minague at those times that I believe that I’ll never be able to appreciate Dogen’s writing. He just doesn’t make sense. “Mountains don’t walk!” I say. “What is he talking about?” But of course I can’t understand what Dogen means by “green mountains are always walking” from my usual mindset, because Dogen’s essay is all about undoing. Unlike much of the writing I’m accustomed to, it is not about doing. It’s about undoing the teaching that has resulted in my ordinary western-trained mind. Dogen’s purpose here to undo

everything that I have learned that ties me up in the knots that have caused me to live in ways that are harmful to me, to my close relations and even to this planet. His purpose is to undo all that and show me how to live just as I am — a sacred awesome presence in this moment of time. In other words, he is trying to show me a how to stop confusing myself with my thoughts. That’s why his writing can be so perplexing. Suggested practice: Before you head out into your day, take some time to meditate deeply on the miracle of the simple fact that you are here, in this place, at this time. Making a gratitude list can help evoke this state of mind. When you have established a sense of appreciation for your life, begin your day’s activity. Then, as you go through the day, notice, without judging, how often you lose that appreciation. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Sakura-ji, Creston’s zendo. Candidates need to participate To the Editor: As we voters turn our minds to the upcoming federal election, we will be looking for opportunities to compare the candidates who are running for member of Parliament, especially as the Nelson and north Kootenay Lake communities, new to the riding of KootenayColumbia, will be expecting to meet the incumbent MP for the first time. Unfortunately, during the 2011 election campaign, Conservative candidate David Wilks’s attendance record was only 43 per cent. That’s not enough respect for the folks I know, as if we voters didn’t matter. Political debates are the defining portrayal of a candidate. Under pressure and adapting to spontaneous demands, the potential leader has the opportunity to present his capabilities. As our future leader, the delegate must be confident in highpressure situations, think clearly, have social and environmental knowledge, and have excellent communication skills. Watching a debate with all the candidates participating is crucial for we voters to determine who will truly represent our individual and community needs. Forfeiting political debates is a clear indication that the delegate doesn’t have what it takes to be a

true representative of the people. We Kootenay-Columbia citizens expect a leader to make themselves as visible and as reachable as possible in every community. There is no excuse to not participate in every debate in this diverse riding, if you want the job. Susan Eyre Yahk

Saying no to Jumbo was wise To the Editor: (Re: “Environment Minister Says No to Jumbo”, June 25) It’s about time our minsters paid attention to regulations and the people’s requests. This has been a thorn in the side of the many people of the Kootenays and a stumbling block for the government. Yes, we need investment, but not at the expense of a pristine wilderness area. We must protect our forests and water supply, along with animal habitat and ecology. Many rare mountain plants will only survive in an untouched area. Grizzly bears and cougars need a large hunting area. Water, the mainstay of life, can only be there if we leave Mother Nature to supply it. Our water supply is at a premium, as we are learning this year. I am personally pleased that the environmental certificate expired.

The input of First Nations has been most valuable. No more fake laws with self-made mayors and council imposing their ideas on B.C.! Yes, we need to move forward, but not at the expense of prime land when we already have so many ski resorts, some struggling to survive in today’s economy. It is good to see real wisdom acted upon. Thanks to those who made a very wise decision! Charlotte Kaetler Creston “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your

And how about the wellmarked pedestrian crosswalk by the high school and Dairy Queen? Then there’s the start of the new gymnastics club building on Canyon Street. And definitely not least is the awesome new sign for our recreation centre. All these improvements were a long time coming, but as a daily traveller of this section of highway, they are an immense improvement. That’s what new in Creston! Ellen Samuelson Erickson

the Bible (verse 13) speaks more clearly of the invisible powers that rule and influence people and nations. The prince of the kingdom of Persia is primarily Satan, who through his emissaries tried to turn Cyrus, the Medo-Persian ruler, against Israel. Similarly Michael is spoken of as the Prince of Israel. We should note that, often, passages such as Isaiah 14:12 (footnote), Ezekiel 28:12 (footnote) and Daniel 8:10-13 transcend the national powers to whom they originally apply.

Sci-fi explores the spiritual, social and psychological

Doris Lessing describes sci-fi writers as playing “the thankless role of the despised illegitimate son who can afford to tell truths the respectable siblings either do not dare, or, more likely, do not notice because of their respectability. They have also explored the sacred literatures of the world in the same bold way they take scientific and social possibilities to their logical conclusions so that we may examine them. possibility and potential. While extremely tedious in parts — the book reads more like a series of self-indulgent lectures than a novel, and lacks any identifiable plot or character development — Shikasta has become lodged in my consciousness like no other work of fiction. Having read it three times already, I believe I am just starting to understand its deeper implications and meanings. Another favourite writer in the sci-fi/fantasy genres (the two genres can be hard to separate, both falling under the broader “speculative fiction” category) is Gene Wolfe. Labelled “the most dangerous writer alive today” by Neil Gaiman, Wolfe’s works, like Lessing’s, are not easy reads. Clever, surprising, insightful, thought provoking, but never easy. Filled with mystery — unanswered questions, unresolved sequences — Wolfe’s tales meander through half-familiar worlds and landscapes, leading the reader always forward and deeper into the labyrinth, but never reaching the destination. Kind of like life that way. They play elegantly with our expectations of a tidy conclusion. And one has to say that Wolfe is a joker, if a very serious and intelligent joker.

Wolfe’s masterpiece is The Book of the New Sun, following the journey of a disgraced journeyman torturer who is destined to lead the earth to rebirth under a new sun. My favourite Wolfe work, however, is the diptych The Knight and The Wizard. Now, if I summarized the plot here, this column would never end and it is so fantastical that you would think I’d lost my marbles, so let me just say this: you may not enjoy this work, but it will

affect you. It will stick in your soul, and colour your experience and vision for years to come. And you will be richer for it. As always, I welcome your comments, questions, and suggestions for the library. Send me an email at aaron@crestonlibrary.com, or just drop by and say hello. were held in check all the days of Cyrus, and all the days of his son Cambyses, who reigned about seven and a half years. Daniel 10:13 clearly teaches the freedom of the human will to oppose God. Both Satan and God were moving on the mind of the king but neither could compel the monarch. What amazing love that God will not force the mind of anyone but always gives freedom of choice! Sadly, so few humans exercise a similar respect for the freedom that allows each person. To His children today the Lord declares, “Be strong, … and work: for I am with you.” The Christian always has a strong helper in the Lord. The way of the Lord’s helping we may not know; but this we do know: He will never fail those who put their trust in Him. Could Christians realize how many times the Lord has ordered their way, that the purposes of the enemy concerning them might not be accomplished, they would not stumble along complainingly. Their faith would be stayed on God, and no trial would have power to move them. They would acknowledge Him as their wisdom and efficiency, and He would bring to pass that which He desires to work out through them. Ian Cotton is the retired pastor of the Creston Seventh-day Adventist Church.

FROM PAGE 9

While Ezra 4:1-6 gives the earthly side of what is happening in Palestine, in Daniel 10:13 the veil is drawn back and supernatural powers are seen engaging in the conflict concerning the rebuilding of the sanctuary. While Satan was striving to influence the highest powers in the kingdom of Medo-Persia to show disfavor to God’s people, angels worked in behalf of the exiles. The controversy was one in which all heaven was interested. Through the prophet Daniel we are given a glimpse of this mighty struggle between the forces of good and the forces of evil. For three weeks, Gabriel wrestled with the powers of darkness, seeking to counteract the influences at work on the mind of Cyrus, and before the contest closed, Christ himself came to Gabriel’s aid. “The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days,” Gabriel declares. “but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.” (Daniel 10:13) All that heaven could do in behalf of the people of God was done. The victory was finally gained; the forces of the enemy

Benefits of new advanced meters: • Monthly billing • Choose your billing date • Fewer estimates • Online tools to help you manage your electricity use For more information, visit fortisbc.com/ami or call 1-866-436-7847.

Steve Juris passed away peacefully on July 13, 2015 at Crest View Care Village, Creston, BC at the age of 87. Steve was born in Czechoslovakia, to Michael and Mary Juris on February 28, 1928. Steve arrived in Canada with his parents in 1938 from Czechoslovakia. He was educated in Iron Springs, Alberta where he met and married his love Emily Bilcik on November 27, 1950. They stayed in Iron Springs farming and raising their family. Steve was a farmer at heart; he loved growing things from sugar beets to livestock. This passion continued when they moved to the Creston Valley, living a semiretired life caring for an orchard. COMMUNITY

C.B. comedy festival the ‘funniest vacation ever’

Dogs of our Lives What would our lives be like without dogs?

BY WILL JOHNSON Nelson Star

Kootenay Gut Buster founder Daryl Makk can hardly believe they’ve already reached the tenth anniversary of their popular annual weekend celebration of all things funny, held in Crawford Bay. “The Gut Buster is the kind of show you can’t get in the clubs,” said Makk, who noted the event is the only two-night outdoor comedy concert in Canada. “I like to call it the ‘funniest vacation ever’.” The July 24 and 25 event includes live music and standup comedy, and the audience is encouraged to camp or stay nearby. The show often goes late into the night, too late to take a ferry back across Kootenay Lake without missing some of the performers. Makk said one of the things that makes him most proud is the customers who return every year, from all over North America, for the event.

As Your Hometown Vet we love canines of all shapes and sizes! We welcome you to drop by for a canine treat or weigh in, or just to say “Hello!”

“We encourage everyone to explore the area by day and laugh their butts off by night.” This year’s lineup includes Kerry Unger, Damonde Tschritter, Sean Lecomber, Ken Valgardson, Marcus Ryan, James Moore and Wafik Nasrella — who bills himself as the “funniest oneeyed Egyptian Canadian comedian on the planet.” “We have some really cool people booked to show up, and everyone is there to have fun. Right now there’s a lineup of comics who want to do it,” Makk said. “We encourage everyone to explore the area by day and laugh their butts off by night.” Makk himself likes to poke at society’s hypocrisy with his act. “I love pointing out some of our little flaws, or emphasizing how we go against nature’s plan. You know, we were meant to be picked off by predators. Now we protect the weak and move them to the middle of the herd — I guess you could say I think there’s too much over-pampering of self-entitled people.” Makk said to expect to make new friends and meet new people during the festival — and, of course, expect plenty of laughs. A weekend pass is $66, or $33 for Friday only and $35 for Saturday only. For more information, visit kgbcomedy.com.

This year’s performers include (clockwise from top left) Kerry Unger, Wafik Nasrella, Sean Lecomber and Damonde Tschritter.
