Nathan Harpur stands amidst his rye crop in one of his Midway fields.

Harpur turns to sugar Midway farmer Nathan Harpur used a less conventional method of protecting his grain crops from insects this season, and it appears his approach has paid off. Harpur, a fourth generation farmer, decided against spraying his crops with chemical pesticides, instead opting for a more “organic” approach which saw him treat the plants with a simple mix of sugar and water. Other additives included food grade phosphoric acid, humic acid, ammonia, borax and, finally, vinegar to take the mixture to a PH of 6.6. Not only did this help control pesky insects such as grasshoppers by attracting more beneficial insects, but it may also have allowed his crop to flourish despite a severe lack of moisture. While neighbouring farmers saw significantly less growth of non-irrigated crops, Harpur’s has proven to be “pretty decent.” He also attributes his success to an early planting of seed. While many parts of the Boundary were still snow-covered, Harpur found the soil in his Midway fields warm enough in late March to accommodate sowing. The use of sugar as a crop spray is not a particularly new practice, though it has been attracting a lot of interest in modern agriculture of late, as farmers look for non-chemical, more economical ways of crop protection. Some have turned to very unconventional means of pest control. Since 2004, according to a report featured in The Guardian, farmers in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, have been using cola as a pesticide because it’s considerably cheaper than conventional sprays and, they believe, does just as good a job of protecting their rice crops. Other states have followed the trend.

Cola manufacturers strongly disagree that their products can be used as pesticides because they say there is nothing in the drinks that can be used as pest control. But, the farmers in the Durg, Rajnandgaon and Dhamtari districts of Chhattisgarh disagree and have successfully used the sugary beverage to protect their rice plantations against pests. In fact, Rajnandgaon recently set a world record in rice production without the use of GMOs. Using cola as pesticide isn’t exactly 100 per cent natural or organic but most believe it must be safer than toxic pesticides. In fact, the practice of using soft drinks instead of pesticides, which are up to 10 times more expensive, is gaining so much popularity that sales of soft drinks have increased dramatically in many villages. Farmers say the use of pesticides can cost them about 70 rupees ($1.50) an acre. By comparison, if they mix up a bottle of cola with water and spray it on their crops it costs as much as 60 rupees less per acre. With these savings the farmers are noticing a significant change in earnings and at the same time are noticing the lack of pesticide use is keeping their soil rich. Agricultural specialist Devendra Sharma told BBC reporter Alok Prakash Putul that some farmers actually believe that the drinks are the same as pesticides, but he explained their effectiveness more likely lies in the sugar syrups, which attract ants which in turn feed on the larva of destructive insects. Whatever the scientific explanation might be, Nathan Harpur knows that sugar water has helped him produce good crops in challenging circumstances, and he will certainly be continuing the practice next season and beyond.

and are not affecting nearby communities.” There were also fires discovered on Tuesday, such as the 3.5 hectare blaze five kilometres west of the North Fork area north of Grand Forks A four-person crew equipped with a small air tanker is currently in attendance though the fire is not yet contained. There was also a small spot fire reported around Horn Creek near Greenwood. The current fire danger rating for the Boundary is high, particularly for the Midway-Rock Creek corridor, which is expected to experience a warming trend, with the risk of lightening strikes continuing. The Ingram Mountain fire was clearly visible from – with files from Craig Lindsay, Bridesville. Boundary Creek Times Contributor PHOTO: ANDREW TRIPP

Fracking causes tremors Provincial and federal scientists have released the results of their latest research into the environmental impact of fracking, the injection of high-pressured fluids into wells to open difficult oil and gas deposits, and their findings could potentially prove disastrous. It has been determined that fracking has caused more than a thousand earthquakes in north eastern B.C. since 2006, and changed the region’s seismicity. The earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 1.0 to 4.3, included six events higher than 4.0 and more than 20 events that shook buildings and moved furniture in places like Fort St. John. Several quakes caused casing damage to horizontal wells. Moreover, industrycaused tremors remain an ongoing geological revolution for the region. Earthquakes with a magnitude of about 2.0 or less are called micro quakes and can’t be felt at the surface. Events above 3.0 can be felt on the ground, and tremors just larger than 4.0 can cause minor damage. A great earthquake, capable of extensive damage, typically measures a magnitude of 8.0. Scientists originally thought that fracking wouldn’t trigger anything stronger than micro quakes. But now that the process has caused quakes as powerful as magnitude 4.4 in Alberta, scientists are grappling to determine what kind of hazard industrial tremors might pose to pipelines, dams and other infrastructure. In Upper Halfway, a community northeast of Fort St. John, residents have described the tremors as a series of crashes and bangs comparable to someone driving “a truck into the side of the house.”
The injection of highly pressurized water mixtures into a well creates a network of cracks that can also connect to fault zones. The reactivation of these faults can then trigger an earthquake, scientists say. Due to limited monitoring, industry and government lack a full understanding of how the wave of quakes is changing the flow of groundwater in the region or the migration of gases such as methane, radon and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere throughout northeast B.C. Earthquakes triggered by the shale gas industry in B.C. have not injured anybody or damaged public property to date. But industry-made tremors in the U.S. Midwest have caused damage in Oklahoma and created new insurance liabilities.
It seems naïve to believe that B.C. will escape a similar fate.

Many communities in the Kootenay Boundary now have enhanced Internet services. This from the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, which announced in a press release last week how pleased it is to be part of the efforts to bring that enhanced service to Boundary communities. Working with the Regional Districts of East Kootenay and Central Kootenay as well as with the Columbia Basin Trust and Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation has resulted in Internet improvements and/or expansions in parts of Electoral Areas A, B/Lower Columbia-Old Glory, C/Christina Lake, D/Rural Grand Forks and E/ West Boundary, the release said. “We cannot give enough thanks to the efforts of our local government friends and partners in East and Central Kootenay, nor to the Columbia Basin Trust,” said Chair Grace McGregor, RDKB board chair and director for Area C/Christina Lake. “Their long-term commitment to improving Internet access to rural residents has resulted in an innovative and productive partnership between the CBT, local government, local societies and private industry to improve Internet service to rural residents. This partnership has brought the federal government to the table with essential funding for these projects.” Added Area A Director Ali Grieve, “High speed is something we all expect today, with

much of rural Canada still left out. This is a very significant improvement not only for some of our rural neighbours, but for existing or potential new business as well. Rural business gets a more level playing field to research and expand their markets.” “Improving Internet service and availability makes our communities more livable and sustainable,” said Director Linda Worley, Area B/ Lower Columbia-Old Glory. “A key benefit to improving internet capabilities is the ability for our rural residents to access and benefit from learning opportunities in the expanding world of on-line education,” said Director Roly Russell, Area D/Rural Grand Forks. “Living in rural British Columbia has many benefits that are sometimes overshadowed by challenges. In an age where good, reliable high speed Internet access is essential for a community to be sustainable and grow, this project brings hope and potential to our rural residents,” said Director Vicki Gee, Electoral Area E/West Boundary. This project, which will see the improvement and enhancement of existing services as well as expansion into new service areas has been a long term one, which has had many individuals contributing. “A special mention must be made of former RDKB chair Larry Gray whose commitment to the issue of rural Internet access and efforts while in office and afterwards helped ensure this successful ending,” McGregor said.

MEDIEVAL DAYS

Living history plays out in Nakusp

The Kettle River Memorial Run was inspired by former Midway resident John Boltz, who lost his battle with bone cancer in May 2009. This year’s event attracted about sixty runners who chose from 5, 10 and 18km routes. Competitors endured gruelling heat throughout the morning, but were well-supported by numerous water stations along the way. Organizer Nicole Ferrier has yet to tally the money raised, but expects it to be a tidy contribution to the Midway Public Library.

With a few keystrokes you can sample thousands of opinions, aoat in a sea of information. But as the volume increases, the accuracy and reliability of professional journalism is essential. Gathering and sorting the facts, weighing and interpreting events, and following the story from beginning to end is more important than ever.

Recognize the Wildfire Hazards in Your Community Smokey the Bear Reminds Everyone: Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires Chair McGregor, the Board of Directors, and Staff of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Encourage You to Play Safe this Summer. All information points to hotter than normal temperatures and lower than normal precipitation for the summer of 2015. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) reminds everyone to enjoy their summer activities while using caution and being fire safe. Wildfires are unpredictable. You can, however create a defensible space around your home to reduce an approaching wildfire’s volatility. Please take steps to keep your family safe. Assess hazards in and around your home and reduce any possible threat. The time is now, not when a fire is at your doorstep. Be proactive, be practical, and be FireSmart. The following link to the FireSmart Manual will assist everyone to reduce hazards of wildfire by following a few simple steps: http://bcwildfire.ca/Prevention/docs/homeownerfiresmart.pdf For the latest information on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air quality advisories please visit: http://www.bcwildfire.ca For additional information and tips on water conservation please visit: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wsd/plan_protect_sustain/ water_conservation/brochure.pdf
