TALL TIMBERS TWO

Tall Timbers plans draw hundreds A developer wants to expand a Langley subdivision. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Hundreds of people poured through the Bethel Mennonite Church July 15 to have their say on a proposed development 35 years in the making. Infinity Properties, a Langley builder, is considering expanding the Tall Timbers subdivision, adding more houses to the north and west of the existing lands. Tall Timbers is north of 56th Avenue and west of 240th Street. The land is bordered by the Salmon River to the north. Infinity didn’t even have any preliminary sketches or proposed designs at Wednesday’s meeting, which was just to find out what the neighbourhood thinks, said Infinity president Tim Bontkes. He said the rough plan is for lots of around 1/3 of an acre. That would mean no more than 75 lots on the current buildable land, Bontkes said. “We’re trying to duplicate Tall Timbers Estates,” Bontkes said. A plan to expand Tall Timbers on that land was rejected by Township council in the early 1980s. The new plan, if approved, would get its water from the new East Langley water pipeline and would have its own small waste treatment facility. The current Tall Timbers development uses a municipally owned well and local water system. The plan drew hundreds of people partly because North Otter resident Gloria Stelting advertised it widely, starting a Facebook group called Leave Salmon River Uplands

Hundreds of people turned out for a community meeting on a planned future development near the existing Tall Timbers Estates. Alone and distributing hundreds of flyers with local realtor Annabel Young. Stelting is worried that the Township council will be okay with expanding Tall Timbers. “I think you shouldn’t repeat a mistake of the past,” Stelting said. Tall Timbers has for a long time been a lone medium-density development surrounded by mostly acreages and small hobby farms. Stelting said the rest of the area should remain rural, and suggested it be developed under its current RU-1 rural zoning, which would allow perhaps 26 houses. Young said she doesn’t want another Willoughby in the area. “They need to have green spaces, they need to look after the Salmon River,” she

said of the neighbourhood. Traffic was a concern for several other people who attended the meeting. “Anything that gets developed out our way, it means cars,” said Lindy Leclair. Her husband John said there has already been a lot more traffic in their area due to construction of another nearby development. Whatever the proposed design for the property, it likely won’t go before council for six months or more, possibly sometime over the winter. Bontkes said Infinity will come back to the neighbourhood again in about three months, after it has gone through the feedback received at Wednesday’s meeting. Dozens of residents filled out comment forms.

Petition calls for water fees Groundwater is cheap – too cheap, according to activists. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Consumer watchdogs dropped off a sizeable petition at Langley MLA Mary Polak’s office Wednesday calling on the government to charge more for groundwater extraction. The 225,000 signatures gathered by SumOfUs.org called on the province to demand corporate users pay a fair rate for water, including water bottled up and sold by major corpora-

tions like Nestlé. “We want to see it protected and we want to see it safeguarded,” said Liz McDowell, a campaign strategist with SumOfUs. Right now, water users pay $2.25 per million litres pumped. Increasing fees is not about selling water to generate a profit, but about cost recovery. Ian Stephen of the WaterWealth Project, said the money needs to be used to pay for B.C.’s Water Sustainability Act. The government has indicated a review of the water charges is coming, something that pleased the campaigners. They found Polak’s office closed Wednesday, as the environment minister was in Victoria and local staff were on holiday.

under stage three restrictions. Meanwhile, Langley Township officials are monitoring the levels in wells that provide some of Langley’s water supply. “The water levels are declining, but it’s not unexpected with the weather we’ve been having,” said Larsen. So far, the levels aren’t alarming, said Larsen. Water levels are about half a metre lower than they were at this time last year, Larsen said. “Still lots of water in the wells at this point,” Larsen said. The Township has seven wells that serve Aldergrove, seven that feed water into the Metro Vancouver system to blend with water from outside of Langley, and five that serve small local populations. The water system of Aldergrove is served entirely by wells, and Aldergrove has typically seen more severe water restrictions in the summer. The East Langley Water Supply Project was supposed to have connected Aldergrove to Metro Vancouver water by now, but delays with the pipeline project have pushed its completion date back to this August.

Condos confound neighbours A high density development drew fire in Willoughby. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

A number of Langley residents turned out at Monday night’s public hearing to object to a planned condo project for the core of the Willoughby area. A Poet’s Wynd, with at least 286 condo units and 138 townhouse units proposed, is planned for the southeast corner of 208th Street and 80th Avenue, near several other previous condo projects. As usual with any new housing project for the fast-growing Willoughby area, existing residents were worried about traffic, parking, and overcrowded schools. “Young families are moving into this area,” said Patrick Taylor. “We’re just going to be overcrowding these schools.” Resident Evelina Reinsbee said it’s wrong for the area without proper roads, saying “208th now is a zoo.” The traffic during construction was on the mind of Derek Spencer. “I’m not sure how they’re going to facilitate construction

The Fraser River was a busy waterway during Canada’s 26th annual Parks Day. The sandy beaches near the Brae Island campground were the launching areas for

boats as visitors tried out kayaking along the Bedford Channel in an event hosted by the Derby Reach Brae Island Parks Association. Other Parks Day events in Langley on Saturday included an afternoon of birds, frogs, butterflies, dragonflies, crafts, and live music in and around Campbell Valley Regional Park’s Nature House, and a clean up of the West Creek Wetland at Glen Valley Regional Park, hosted by the Metro Van and the Langley Environmental

Partners Society (LEPS). Canada’s first Parks Day was in 1990. More than 20 million people visit B.C.’s parks each year. With 1,029 parks and protected areas, B.C. has the highest percentage of land dedicated to parks and protected areas of any province. Environment Minister Mary Polak said the day is “a great reminder to get out, explore B.C.’s provincial parks and discover all the amazing things you can see and do in nature.”

Street widening a costly project A wider 208th St. would cost millions. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Upgrading 208th Street in Willoughby to its full planned four-lane width would cost Langley Township more than $46 million, says a new report. The report recommends continuing with the current strategy for acquiring land and building new roads, although that could take many years to finish all of the major corridor. Traffic issues on 208th Street have been a sore spot for many of the new residents who have flocked to the area over the last decade. Willoughby is now the Township’s largest neighbourhood by population, with more than 25,000 residents, almost a quarter of the total

population. However, 208th Street is only widened in areas where development has taken place. Long stretches of it remain the same two-lane rural road it was before the 208th Street overpass was built in 1999. At the time, 208th Street was a relatively quiet deadend road that served a neighbourhood of acreages and hobby farms. The report notes that while the current approach is “fiscally prudent” it gives the Township no control over the speed at which road improvements take place. “As properties do not necessarily develop in sequential order, this can lead to a segmented widening, where some sections of the road fronting a particular development project may be upgraded and some other sections along the same road where there is no develop-

The document includes maps showing which sections are anticipated to be widened in one to three years, three to five years, or more than five years. ened for more than five years. Most of the land between 80th and 76th is expected to be developed, and the roads widened, in the next one to three years. Several sections, including the Willowbrook Connector curve that leads down to 64th Avenue, doesn’t have development potential, and would likely have to be built at Township expense. During last year’s civic election, Mayor Jack Froese promised to widen the 208th Street overpass to four lanes. The Township has started planning work on that project, which will cost an estimated $12.6 million. Froese also mused that perhaps it was time to look at widening 208th Street, but he did not promise that it would happen. “We’d have to look at the cost,” Froese said at the time.

At first we thought they’d go for the red-barn-style cottage in the chestnut tree, just one limb over from where they had started building their own accommodations, taking over a construction project that a woodpecker had started and abandoned nearly a year earlier. They also showed considerable interest in an A-frame bungalow nestled among a tangle of grape vines, next to a clematis that offers great shade from mid-spring and a beautiful shower of thousands of tiny white flowers in late summer. But in the end, they picked one of the duplex homes that bracket our garage, one in front (the one they picked this

Odd Thoughts

he Langley Advance has been arriving on the doorsteps and in the mailboxes of local residents for 84 years as of this edition. When the paper started publication under E.J. Cox, Langley already had a lot of history. It was the birthplace of B.C., the site of the region’s first Hudson’s Bay Company trading post, and a home and crossroads for First Nations people for thousands of years. It had grown into a collection of sleepy farming villages, like Langley Prairie, Aldergrove, Milner, and Fort Langley by the time the Advance put out its first edition. Since then, the Langley Advance has tried to report the changes, big and small, that have happened to Langley. There have been many. Langley didn’t stay small for long, and its growing pains led it to change in unexpected ways. The split into Langley City and Township has defined more than 60 years of local politics, as well as confusing outsiders as to why there are two towns with the same name right next to one another. We’ve seen periods of massive growth, with old-timers in the 1970s and 1980s shocked at the sprawl of Brookswood and Walnut Grove. Now adults who grew up in those neighbourhoods, and have kids of their own, are shocked at the speed of growth in Willoughby. The Langleys together have a population of around 140,000 people, and it’s only going up. We went from treating the sick in homes to building a small hospital that expanded several times – and may need another expansion soon. We’ve seen local residents achieve Olympic and Paralympic status, we’ve seen acts of astounding charity and kindness, and we’ve seen the community come together in times of flood and fire. We’ve seen crime, crowded schools, and more elections than we care to remember. We’ve seen our business change, from pure print to the internet and social media. Regardless of the medium, the Advance will keep doing what it has done: documenting what’s going on in Langley. – M.C.

Transit vote spotlighted flaws

Dear Editor, Congratulations to the 62 per cent that voted “No” on the transit plebiscite. Despite an unlevel playing field (campaign) the electorate has sent a clear message to government. If Christie Clark has any urge to ignore the results and push an increase through anyway, she should remember that she could not even get elected in her own riding during the last provincial election. In fact most of the mayors group (18) should now be looking for other work. Never has there been a more blatant display of arrogance and disdain for voters who elected them and who pay their salaries – promoting their own agenda and paying with taxpayer dollars by trying to intimidate the issue in lieu of staying neutral. Being elected means working for the people’s agenda. That we can use improved transit is not questioned but changing how government operates is. Two main issues need to be resolved before a new transit program is created. First the province has already tapped the taxpayer – tax increases

from numerous sources such as reduced income tax exemption, hydro rates after new meter installation, auto insurance, ferry rates, bridge tolls, medical premiums and more ad nauseum are far above the inflation rate. In fact these taxes are not included in the inflation rate and so increases to our costs of living are wildly distorted… and what are they doing with all the extra money anyway? Second, traffic is not congested, it is saturated and it is as much engineered as it is overpeopled. It originates with the Fed and is exacerbated by lesser ranks through ill thought tinkering. Consider the following… creating bike lanes at the expense of vehicles (bike lanes should be elevated or out of the way instead of robbing road space), eliminating right hand turns and increasing intersection light intervals for many blocks to accommodate bikes, buses stopping in moving lanes instead of pull outs, shutting down “fast” lanes during morning rush for centre median gardening or street sweeping (the rest of the world works a 24-hour clock so

Downtown dirty, dangerous Dear Editor, Someone was once quoted as saying that “the whole downtown area of Langley has turned into another Whalley. It’s gone out of control.” That person then relocated to another city in order to feel safe. I couldn’t agree more, as I see nothing but lowlife junkies, alcoholics, hookers and bums hanging around, looking for trouble. I was on my way home from work the other day when I witnessed a disgusting crackhead threatening people and swearing at them on 204th Street near Douglas Crescent. That

person had a backpack and was pushing a buggy down the street. I’m not ashamed to admit I called police and thankfully their response was quick so they dealt with this useless person. With all due respect to Langley City residents, your downtown core is an ugly ghetto because of all these useless parasites and is in serious need of a good cleansing. I would never even dream of buying a property here. Time for police to crackdown on scum and keep troublemakers under a microscope. Mike Brian, Surrey

why not gardening), permanent road closures, underused HOV lanes (I’ve even seen HOV bike lanes), overkill/installation of speed bumps and turning circles (turning circles on provincial Highway 99 which is a truck route and trucks have to drive over the top), still building two lane roads and bridges knowing that a million people are on the way, desynchronized traffic lights and now they want to build road level light rail and eliminate the Georgia Viaduct. As a former host of the 1986 Transportation Expo to showcase the world, maybe now is the time to bring back the rickshaw. Maybe transit and token fire dousing is not the real problem because there is still a 38 per cent that wants to give government more and more control in spite of achieving results that would bankrupt any private organization. The term is called plutocracy (I wonder if that has anything to do with Pluto being way out there). Donald Trump has it right. “Why are we allowing government to do this?” Richard Keill, Langley

Hats off to honesty Dear Editor, I am disappointed. Why can’t people be honest and return something to a lost and found instead of thinking it is theirs to take? As I was loading my nine-month-old twins into the truck at Costco in Langley last week, trying to be thoughtful of the person waiting for my space, trying to hurry, I left their Bass Pro Shop hats in the cart. I know this is my mistake, but I wish the person who found them could have returned them to Costco where I could have claimed them. They are very special, as their uncle bought them for them before they were born. The boys wore these every day. Where have all the honest people gone? Leanne Demuth, Langley City

Facebook Feedback Few things get residents more steamed than water wasters, particularly when Metro Vancouver brings in tighter water restrictions. Readers weigh in: Dale Harrison: Will this also apply to the various sports fields that I’ve seen continually watered throughout? It would be nice if the Township and the City live by the same rules that the rest of us do. Marianne Drake Iberg: I thought we were already level 4 and why, pray tell, does one need to water their lawn anyway. Garden, yes, you need to eat. But lawn? It’ll come back when it starts to rain again. Shauna Leah: The Brookswood water park has a pipe that drains the water out into the gully and walking paths. Why isn’t the water piped into a resevoir for reuse? I stood in utter disbelief as I watched litres and litres of water pour out… Karen Harrison: Can we still water gardens and hedges with timers? Ali Christine: Spray parks are still on as they are user operated and recycled water not treated drinking water.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Langley Sunrise hosts a “taste” fundraiser, and this was the largest year ever – in large part due to the sponsorship and support from six Langley restaurants: Choo Choos, Ban Chok Dee, Shiraz Grill, Match Eatery, Old Yale Bistro, and Rendezvous Pub. But of course, it was the number ROXANNE (174) of hungry supporters who ultimately came out to eat and who made it such a successful fundraiser – generating $5,500 for the lodge, said Rotarian and event organizer Patrick Matiowski.

The looks of shock, glee, amazement, delight, and even a few expressions of fear on the children’s faces was what made all the preparations for the weekend party worthwhile for store owner HOOPER Matthew Purdy. “Obviously it was a huge success, and not just in the money raised for charity but in that everyone seemed to have a great time,” Purdy told the Langley Advance. House prices in Langley and the Fraser Valley kept rising last month, while condo prices remained flat. According to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, sales of houses, townhouses, and condos were all up sharply in June. Across the region, from North Delta to Abbotsford, 2,413 homes changed hands in June this year. That’s up from 1,668 sales in the same month in 2014, a 44.7-per-cent increase. Sales were also up 22.5 per cent compared to June. This was the most sales seen here since 2005, and the fourth busiest month ever for sales in the Fraser Valley, said FVREB president Jorda Maisey. “Our informal market research shows that the majority of homebuyers in the Fraser Valley are families with children moving within their same community or moving within the Fraser Valley region,” Maisey said. The hot sales also contributed to the ever-widening gap between detached houses and any other type of real estate. The average price of a detached house in the region rose to $710,086, up 11.6 per cent while the benchmark price (the price of a “typical” home) hit $609,900, up 7.3 per cent year over year. Meanwhile, 1,199 townhouses sold in June, a 26.6-per-cent decline from the same month in 2014, and a 9.2-per-cent decline from May. Prices, whether average, median, or benchmark, were up by 1.5 to 1.6 per cent, with the average at $302,600 and benchmark at $365,723. Condos were in much the same position, with sales down 6.7 per cent, with 1,726 condos changing hands in June this year compared to last. The average price for a condo fell to $191,900, 2.6 per cent down from a year earlier, while the benchmark price rose just 0.7 per cent to $235,837. When it came to houses, Langley in particular appeared to be a sellers market in June. There were 212 sales, out of 274 actively listed houses in June. Active listings actually declined sharply even as sales for houses shot up. The benchmark price for a Langley house hit $612,300 and the average price was $712,150. Meanwhile, townhouse sales were up at 112 sales out of 167 active listings, but prices barely budged, with benchmark rising to $298,300, up 2.4 per cent, while the average price declined 2.2 per cent to $340,147. Langley condos saw 51 sales in June, and median and average prices have risen, hitting $255,252 on average and $218,000 median. However the benchmark price dipped 7.8 per cent to $197,100, still below $200,000.

Bronzed: The Langley Xtreme 03 girls softball team won bronze at the Provincials in the U12B division in mid-July despite sweltering heat. See more about their tournament efforts online.

Hauling: Glen

Morrow redid every inch of his 1959 Chevrolet Spartan truck since purchasing it about 15 years ago. The Surrey man turned this former fire department pumper into a tow truck which helps cover the costs of his car restorations. Most of the parts were hand-built and the truck was converted to diesel. He purchased it for $3,660 in a federal surplus auction and since his work on it, has been appraised at $165,000.

Country help The third annual Gone Country event will be held on Saturday, July 25 with headliners like Langley’s Karen Lee Batten,

Blackjack Billy, and Tebey at Millennium Park in Cloverdale. Jamie and Chris Ruscheinshki of Twins Cancer Fundraising began the event after losing their mom and a close friend to cancer. The outdoor music festival drew 4,000 attendees last year and funds raised are intended for the BC Cancer Foundation for an endoscopic ultrasound processor to provide better detection and characterization of a patient’s lung or gastro-intestinal cancer. The goal of this year’s event is to raise $200,000. Tickets for Gone Country are

In the money

Langley MLA Mary Polak announced $23,000 in funds from the BC Arts Council for Langley Community Music School. Funds will help cover the school’s annual operating costs. “LCMS is a focal point of culture in our community,” said Polak. “As a former student, the fact that the BC Arts Council recognizes the important work done by LCMS to foster local talent is a testimony to the school’s standard of excellence.”

Financing future Bible translators More room needed A charity bike event Saturday aids minority language students. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

A Langley language institute’s annual bike ride fundraiser on July 25 will help students with scholarship dollars. This is the third year for the local fundraiser, and the second year for Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) president Danny Foster. Dubbed The Training Ride, the ride from Trinity Western University (TWU) takes riders either 37 or 100 kilometres around Langley. In the long run, money raised on the ride will send CanIL graduates around the world. CanIL is based at TWU, and has tracks for students who want to study and work in linguistics generally, as well as those who specifically want to do religiously inspired work with minority language communities, or translate the Bible.

Canada Institute of Linguistics president Danny Foster will be riding the 100 km route this year to raise scholarship funds. There are hundreds of languages around the world that don’t have a written form, much less books or Bibles, said Foster. The goal is to raise money for scholarships and bursaries so students in the MA or BA programs

won’t go off into the world burdened by a huge debt load. “People don’t get into this kind of work for the money,” said Foster. Foster himself will be doing the 100 km version of the Training Ride this year, after doing 37 km

last year. He’s new to lengthy cycling, having previously ridden an old steel bike while he was studying in Bristol, Great Britain a few years ago. This year he’ll be riding a bike that is both much more advanced and has a special personal connection. Foster’s friend Mark, the best man at his wedding, passed away in 2012. Last year Mark’s brother called and asked if Foster wanted Mark’s bike. The bike is a Trek 3000, a high-end carbon fibre framed vehicle that’s a lot lighter and faster than the old steel bike. Foster has been training for a while and last weekend did a 70-km ride for the first time. The ride takes place on Saturday, July 25, with the 100-km ride starting at 6:30 a.m., and the shorter course at 8:30 a.m. Sign up at www. canil.ca/ride. A banquet for riders and families will be held at 12:30 p.m. The ride starts and finishes at the CanIL building on the Trinity Western University campus at 7600 Glover Rd.

Bibles for Missions thrift store has more than two decades in Langley, but it’s outgrown its current space. So this summer will see the store move from its location at 5785 200th St. to the former Liquidation World site in Rainbow Mall (204th Street and Logan Avenue). “We’re excited about the move,” said manager Arlene Roersma. There’s still some work to be done at the new site so there isn’t a definitive timeline for the move and opening. “I’m hoping August,” she said. She wants to be up and running by the end of summer. Until then, it’s business as usual at the current site. Parking is a The store raises money for the Bibles for Mission big issue and Foundation. There are 43 BFM thrift stores across we need more the country and last year space. raised $7 million for the mission work. Arlene Roersma The current store has expanded on the site as much as possible, so the thrift store will move from its 6,700-square-foot space to one almost 20,000 square feet. “Parking is a big issue and we need more space,” she explained. The store has a contingent of about 100 volunteers who help. “We can always use more,” Roersma added. The BFM move is the latest change in the local thrift store sector. The community has about 10 thrift stores with most clustered in Langley City, including the recently expanded Penny Pinchers and the new stores the Battered and Abused Women’s Thrift and New Hope for Children Thrift. Roersma said BFM’s goal is to have a bigger space to raise more money for the cause and they’ve done their homework about the capacity in the marketplace. “I’m not worried,” she said.

Water regs trump beetles two weeks was said to be the limit of time they could spend in the refrigerator. It appears that city staff are aware that nematodes are a special case since Metro Vancouver mentions that under stage 2 sprinkling for nematodes is allowed providing a water exemption permit is obtained and displayed on the lawn. But this leniency vanishes under stage 3, when no lawn sprinkling is allowed anywhere. No further permits will be given and permits previously issued are not valid. MARRISON Apparently engineering departments are the ones to contact on water issues in areas of Metro Vancouver. You might talk to them about your case. Under stage 3 in the GVWD water shortage response plan, any watering of flowers, vegetables, planters, shrubs and trees, must be done by hand using a spring-loaded shut-off

Dear Anne,

Gardening in Langley

We have a European chafer beetle infestation at my son’s property in New Westminster. I am scheduled to pick up a package of nematodes at a garden centre, which has not been particularly helpful in answering my questions. There are plans to implement stage 3 water restrictions in New Westminster this week. It would seem unproductive to apply the nematodes now. How long can nematodes survive in the fridge? Can nematodes be ANNE applied in the fall? And what month? Ed, Tsawassen

W Dear Ed,

hen I used nematodes (against the black vine weevil) instructions came along in the package. It warned nematodes are perishable living things and

nozzle. Nematode lawn treatment is not mentioned. Grey water is always allowed under stage 3 in any conditions. This means scooping water out of baths, shutting drains while you have showers so water builds up – and filling watering cans from any sources at home where water would otherwise go down the drain. The lawn being treated with nematodes should at least be moistened before applying them and again afterwards for two or possibly three days. Instructions with your package should clarify this further. The nematodes will need to be mixed with water and stirred now and then as you sprinkle them on. Because nematodes are very tiny worms, they need to directly contact the soil. Fall treatment wouldn’t work. Mid-July to the end of the month is most effective because this is when chafer larvae hatch and are still close to the surface of the soil within reach of the nematodes.

By August the larvae are bigger and have gone down deeper. Dear Anne,

How much water should a person give potato plants. I don’t want to give them too much because of rot. But my soil is so sandy and they dry out and droop in this heat.

Pat, Langley

Dear Pat,

T

he usual amount is an inch of water a week, but because you have sandy, well-drained soil and we’re having a very hot summer, I’d give them two inches. Under present circumstances, grey water would be best. It’s important to avoid wetting the foliage if possible. Wet foliage encourages late blight. Watering is most important in the early stages of potato growth. You might check whether your potatoes truly need watering or do they droop under hot sun but recover after the sun goes down and temperatures cool.

Anne Marrison is happy to answer gardening questions. Send them to amarrison@shaw.ca

Feasting in the fields The third annual feast with chef Chris Whittaker is all about finding food locally. RONDA PAYNE news@langleyadvance.com

What is local? For some it’s the farmers’ market, U-pick berries, or the 100 Mile Diet. For others it’s wandering into the backyard to pick greens for tonight’s salad. Experience the taste of gourmet local food while dinning long-table style alfresco at the third Come Forage with Chef Chris Whittaker event at Fraser Common Farm Co-operative in Aldergrove on Aug. 2. The feast includes going “whole hog” and this year, the hogs will be more local than ever according to Tallulah Winkelman, a member of the co-op. “We’re doing two smaller pigs, they’re heritage pigs,” said Winkelman. “We’re super excited about using our neighbour’s pigs. They try to feed them on entirely recovered food waste.” It may be called waste, but these pigs eat well. Winkelman noted they actually get the off-cuts of Nature’s Path brand granola as part of their diet. Langley Advance files “And the farmers Chef Chris Whittaker of that raised the pigs are going to be there,” she Forage Restaurant in added. Vancouver will prepare a In addition to the feast at Fraser Common pigs roasted on a spit Farm in Aldergrove. at the site, guests will have the opportunity to forage for food with Whittaker. It’s bringing local right down to the earth as dinner is found on the farm and prepared in the shipping container turned kitchen in the field where dinner will be held. When guests arrive at 4 p.m. they can expect appetizers, entertainment, as well as beer and wine. This too will be local. Cheese comes from Agassiz’s The Farm House Natural Cheeses, wine is provided from Lotusland Vineyards in Abbotsford, and Delta’s Four Winds Brewing Company is bringing the beer. “It’s really nice that they’ll be on hand,” Winkelman said of Four Winds. “They just won best craft beer in Canada.” Tickets are still available at https://www. eventbrite.ca/e/come-forage-with-chef-chris-whittaker-tickets-17508730083 for $100 and include everything from the gourmet dinner to beverages and entertainment. The event sold out last year. “This year the money will go towards winterizing [the shipping container kitchen], more shelving, a fridge... and to keep moving that space toward being more functional for groups.” For those interested in setting up their own event at Fraser Common Farm, email info@gloriousorganics.com.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Park planning begins Township council will soon debate a large new park proposal. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

An expanded off-leash dog area is in the cards for one of Langley’s largest upcoming park projects. Earlier this year, Langley Township took plans for the Yorkson Community Park to the public. Parks staff have now tweaked the designs and plan to present it to the council for a vote in early September. The 52-acre site stretches from 84th Avenue south to 80th Avenue, and is just to the west of 208th Street, running alongside the Yorkson Creek housing development and some mostly vacant plots of land.

The big change after the recent open house is that a dog off leash area will be doubled in size to 1.5 acres, said Al Neufeld, head of parks design and development. The major features of the park will be public playing fields. The existing Yorkson Community Park, a smallish park with a softball diamond and some trails on 84th Avenue, will expand to the south. Three slow-pitch softball fields, four synthetic turf fields, existing ball diamonds, and planned features such as a skateboard park and tennis courts, will cover the landscape. A large water spray park will be built in the center of the site. On the west side there will be walking trails that parallel the Yorkson Creek and its ravine, forming a loop with trails being built on the far side of the creek. A broad green space in between two turf soccer fields could be used to host festivals or even cricket matches.

RONDA PAYNE news@langleyadvance.com

Langley resident and Burnaby firefighter Erik Vogel knows all too well the busy life of a firefighter. These first-responders provide life-saving services, but they also get involved in activities for people with burns and help firefighters in other countries.

Burn centre As a director of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, Vogel is passionate about raising funds for the new Burn Fund Centre in Vancouver. Cascades Casino Resort in Langley will host A Night of Inspiration and Comedy for the centre Aug. 1. “The event is for our new Burn Fund Centre because we’re only $440,000 away from our goal. This event will help us cross the finish line with success,” he noted. Plans for the centre began a decade ago. “Last fall, the Jack & Darlene Poole Foundation donated $2.5 million and reduced our overall fundraising goal to $1.5 million which gave us the confidence to start construction.” Vogel said. The project will cost $13.1 million and construction began in November 2014. Located between the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn, Trauma and Plastics Unit at Vancouver General Hospital and BC Children’s Hospital, the centre will pro-

Many of 2014’s Burn Camp attendees were back for this year’s camp for young burn survivors. vide eight suites for families and burn patients undergoing treatment, plus a range of non-medical services. “It gives burn patients and families a place to stay during treatment with the things they need,” Vogel said. The Aug. 1 fundraiser will include an Elvis impersonator, stand-up comedy, and inspiration from Fort Langley resident Heidi Cave, a burn survivor who wrote Fancy Feet. Buffet dinner and raffle prizes are included. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased through Vogel at 778-846-2915 or erik@burnfund.org.

Kids go to camp Another important activity is supporting burn-survivor kids through the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund Burn Camp. There were 73 kids between the ages of six and 18 at Burn Camp in Squamish this year which ran for a week after the kick off on July 19. One participant is from Langley. Campers have one thing in common – they have severe burns. “It’s big for the kids to go swimming in public,” Vogel said. “That’s a big part of

Park to be built in phases

camp.” Camp counsellors volunteer their time and are professional firefighters, burn unit doctors and nurses, and adult burn survivors – some who attended Burn Camp when they were younger. “It’s almost a one to one ratio of campers to adults when you add up all the support staff,” noted Vogel. It’s a week of fun with swimming, hiking, kayaking, skits, and arts and crafts for kids who may have a hard time experiencing such activities due to their injuries. Camp gives them both the support of adult counsellors as well as time with others who have gone through similar difficulties. “To see a child come to camp wearing a hoody and long pants thinking they are the only one burned out there, they see these other people who are also burned and realize it’s not the end of the world, they go home wearing shorts and a T-shirt. You only have to see that once,” Vogel said. Find out more about Burn Camp and other programs of the Burn Fund visit www. burnfund.org.

years and be completed in roughly nine or 10 phases, said Neufeld. The budget for the project is estimated at more than $20 million. About half of that will be coming from development cost charges paid by

“It is a large project,” said Neufeld. It also won’t be built all at once. Once a design is approved by the Township council, it will take about 10

about five years ago when Vogel met David Sakaki, a Kamloops firefighter and president of the Kamloops Firefighters Operation Nicaragua. Old gear is donated and shipped to fire departments in Nicaragua. Two complete air packs (SCBA), uniforms, and small equipment from the Langley City Fire Department have been added to the shipment being packed and prepared for the Nicaraguan fire department. Last year the Langley department gave a large amount of gear. Groups of firefighters and those interested in the cause head to Nicaragua to help train firefighting techniques and distribute donations. Vogel and his girlfriend Gaby Olson have been on two trips, and two of this year’s Burn Camp counsellors from Kamloops were in Nicaragua with them. Gerry Caceres, a Nicaraguan fire chief was in Langley in October 2014 and said, “We fight fires with whatever we have to protect ourselves. Sometimes we have to pitch in to put fuel in the firetruck to get to the fire. It’s zero pay, 100 per cent volunteer. We don’t get funds from the government.” builders. The other half will have to come from general tax revenue. “It’s definitely a requirement in that area,” said Neufeld, as the population in the northern Willoughby area rises.

Water Restrictions in Effect Until September 30 – STAGE 3

Northwest Langley Rezoning Options Public Information Meetings

All forms of lawn sprinkling using treated drinking water are prohibited.

The Township of Langley is considering options for potential changes to the zoning in the Northwest Langley area, for properties south of the CN Rail lines and north of 98 Avenue, shown shaded on the map.

Power washing and surface washing for aesthetic purposes is prohibited. No outdoor washing or rinsing of vehicles and pleasure craft is permitted, except what is required for safety - windows, lights, and licences only. Exemption permits are no longer available for new lawns under Stage 3 restrictions; any permits issued previously during Stage 2 are now void. The Township of Langley’s Water Shortage Response Bylaw has four stages of watering restrictions: • Stage 1 automatically implemented every year • Stages 2 and 3 used in times of extended drought or when facing a water supply issue • Stage 4 reserved for emergency situations All areas of the Township are subject to the next stages of restrictions if deemed necessary by Metro Vancouver or the General Manager of Engineering. Engineering Division 604.533.6006 tol.ca/waterrestrictions

The options relate to existing single family properties currently zoned Rural Zone RU-1.

Sharpshooters including Jacob Alger (above foreground), from the Thunderbird Fast Draw Club, practised their technique on Saturday before competing in the World Open Index Championships, sanctioned by the World Fast Draw Association. The competition was part of Aldergrove Fair Days last weekend. A brief yet enjoyable Saturday morning parade along Fraser Highway was a feature of Aldergrove Fair Days, which celebrated its 103rd year July 17 to 19. Parade-goers, mostly parents with young children, lined the route that saw entries travel from west to east through downtown Aldergrove. After the parade, the fun continued at Aldergrove Athletic Park next to Aldergrove Community Secondary School with 16 different food vendors on site, displays, food, midway rides, antique tractor and lawn tractor pulls, and the unmistakable gun blasts from sharpshooters involved in the World Open Index Championships, sanctioned by the World Fast Draw Association. It was a full weekend with a Friday evening car show at Aldergrove Community Secondary, festivities continuing until 10 p.m. Saturday, and the final day of fair days 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Senior tougher than bear

VERN MAY Special to the Langley Advance

There are few among us who have gone toe to toe with a bear and lived to tell the tale. There’s only one that we know of locally who can truthfully say he grappled one into submission – Langley’s Don Leo Jonathan. Jonathan, 84, will be honored by All Star Wrestling on July 24 at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds as the league recognizes four of the all-time greats in B.C. wrestling. Originally from New Harmony, Utah, he first visited B.C. as a child, travelling with his father – a pioneering professional wrestler who was known by the name “Brother Jonathan.” After serving in the U.S. Navy, Don Leo followed in his father’s footsteps and would go on to eclipse his father’s fame in campaigns around the globe. When he arrived in Vancouver in December 1963, he was only scheduled to stay for three weeks while awaiting the start of production on a movie role in California. The film fell through and in the meantime, Jonathan and his family fell in love with the Pacific Northwest. During his 31-year career, Jonathan appeared in more than 3,000 matches, securing numerous championships along the way – including 18 title reigns as Canadian tag team champion between 1964

Gowanlock said it all starts with a win over the Raiders this Saturday. “Going into VI [Nanaimo], it’s always a great game, a tough game, hopefully we can pull it out,” Gowanlock said. Offensive tackle Jamie Wandell is in his fourth year with the Rams and said the team’s philosophy is straightforward: “To come out every day and play as hard as we can, play with a little chip on our shoulder, understanding that we’re not the team that we were last year, we’re something new.” Reflecting on last year, Wandell said the experience of losing the Canadian Bowl could actually help some of last year’s rookies who are ready to take a more prominent role this season. “It’s always tough to lose your final game, especially to lose it at home,” Wandell said. “That’s been our goal, always, is to win our last game at home and we weren’t able to take care of that last year.”

New behind bench Jerry Friesen, who will guide special teams and linebackers, joins the Langley Rams staff out of the University of British Columbia, where he was the Thunderbirds defensive coordinator and academic coach for the past two seasons. Friesen has 28 years of coaching experience in the CFL and CIS. The native of Rosthern Saskatchewan was presented with the Frank Tindall Trophy as CIS Coach of the Year in 2004, after leading his University of Alberta Golden Bears to a 7-1 record and Canada West first place finish. Friesen was an assistant coach at the University of Saskatchewan, his alma mater, from 1986 to 1995 and helped the Huskies win the Vanier Cup in 1990. He joined the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders staff as linebackers coach in 1996 and was the defensive coordinator of the University of Calgary Dinos 1997 to 2000.

Friesen took over as head coach of the Alberta Golden Bears program in 2001 and led them to three consecutive Hardy Cup Appearances (2003 to 2005), he ran the Golden Bears program 2001 to 2010 before returning to the Roughriders as an assistant coach in 2011. Friesen then joined the UBC staff in the spring of 2013. Friesen played Junior Football for the Saskatoon Hilltops and then attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he was a two time CIS All Canadian linebacker for the Huskies. Drafted by the Montreal Alouettes in 1978, Friesen played three seasons before returning to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, where he played five seasons and was honoured with the CFL’s Tom Pate Award for Community Service in 1985. Friesen was placed on the UofS Huskies Wall of Fame in 1994 and inducted to the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
