Burn off successful on Siktum Creek wildfire
A large column of smoke was visible from around Nelson Saturday as the result of a successful burn off operation on the Sitkum Creek wildfire. Fire officials say the operation was necessary to limit the potential growth and direction of the fire, which then stood at 530 hectares and was considered 50 per cent contained. The objective was to secure the fire’s south flank on the Duhamel Creek drainage area. An evacuation alert for about 350 homes was lifted last week thanks to cooler temperatures, some precipitation, and progress by firefighters. Photo by Jennifer Cowan

Felting ranges from light scarves and shawls to sculptural pieces, rugs, and blankets. Tricia also makes handmade, mild soap with essential oils. In Trail, request a wheel demonstration at Pottery by Fran, view pots in various stages of creation and enjoy seining her beautifully finished pottery. If you need Nadine Tremblay, she’ll be in her studio for a year. The Rossland artist just received a $2,500 grant from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), which administers and manages the arts, culture and heritage granting programs on behalf of the Columbia Basin Trust. “I’m so stoked to have support and it will give me discipline because my own stuff is always the first to go at the end of the day,” she said. By her own stuff, Tremblay means her first solo album under the name Sexton Blake. Tremblay won’t play up the fact that Sexton was created when her voice was added to Australian band Sonicanimation’s latest “Once More From the Bottom,” which was released in March of 2013. Her new persona developed naturally when she began working with musical partner and boyfriend Rupert Keiller, who began as a DJ in the early 1990s, primarily performing in Australia. Sexton was star struck when the band toured the East Coast of Australia and performed in front of millions and hasn’t looked back yet. “She is me but with more confidence,”
Artist Nadine Tremblay is always evolving musically. The Rossland resident is giddy about financial backing for her first album under her stage name Sexton Blake. Tune into the evolution of her sound on her Sexton Blake Facebook fan page. Photo by Valerie Rossi she explained of her stage name. “It’s actually Cockney for fake so what I like about that is I’m just faking it ‘till I make it.” The 37-year-old is no stranger to music. Tremblay’s voice has been heard time and again locally, and on tour, warming crowds with her sound and her mere presence. At times she has been known as Liz Stephens from Ski Bum: The Musical or an Andrews Sister with Company Jump. But as of late, Tremblay has been working on finding her own sound from her home studio in Rossland. “I essentially don’t know what genre it
will be but I’m leaning toward writing music I love, which will be a fusion of indy, pop, electronica, folk,” she laughed. “I’m going to borrow from all those genres.” It’s only a been a few weeks since her project was granted funding and the early days include a dedicated 20-hour week to developing her sound – through voice exercises and fine tuning her mandolin all while perfecting beats through Ableton Live, a software music sequencer and digital audio workstation.

Tremblay’s drive picked up speed last spring when she took a songwriting course through Berkeley’s College of Music. She started to develop her sound then and has since kept at it, drawing from life in her little mountain town and new experiences through travel. At this stage its all about laying down some beats and starting to brainstorm lyrics through creative writing. The mundane work will pay off though when it all comes together and eventually really takes shape when other musicians collaborate under her title. “I’m a huge harmony fan,” admits the creative spirit with a masters in opera. “If I could hand pick my band, every musician would sing and in harmony. “I bet this album is going to sound really eclectic because it can’t be Lana Del Rey, and Robyn, and Vampire Weekend and Metric,” she added. “It’s just not possible . . . well maybe it is.” That optimism continues to surprise her as she juggles work as the Charles Bailey Theatre front house manager, deejaying under Altitude Entertainment, running the Rossland Glee Club and sharing her joy of musical theatre with children through Triple Threat’s annual workshop and production. Tremblay’s album is one of 166 projects to receive $706,000 total in CKCA financial support this year, ac-
cording to Krista Patterson, alliance executive director. CKCA has been distributing CBT funding to the cultural sector annually since 1998 with a primary emphasis on artistic, cultural or heritage proposals. A wide range of projects are supported each year, through 12 different funding programs, including individual and group projects, master classes, major exhibitions, touring for artists and performers and large heritage capital projects. Some notable arts projects from individual artists include: Miriam Needoba, filmmaker, created an award winning documentary about Kootenay nature. Photographer Jim Lawrence: www. smalltownfilms.com/eyes-in-the-forest-the-portraiture-of-jim-lawrenceshort-documentary. Ian Johnston, funded for both Refuse Culture and Reinventing Consumption, is based in the Kootenays but has become a very successful internationally known sculptor: www. ianjohnstonstudio.com. Anne Degrace was funded to create her first fiction novel Treading Water www.annedegrace.ca and she has gone on to publish four more since receiving CKCA support. A full list of funded projects from previous years are available here: basinculture.com/media-kit. Kokanee’s name spread far and wide GREG NESTEROFF
West Kootenay Advertiser
One hundred and fourth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names In addition to being a fish and a popular beer, kokanee is the name of 14 geographic features in BC: a settlement, bay, creek, two provincial parks, glacier, recreation area, lake, landing, narrows, pass, peak, point, and range. As a result, it’s probably this area’s most widely used indigenous word. Kokanee is derived from kekeni, the Sinixt term for the landlocked salmon once plentiful in this region. (There’s no need to capitalize kokanee when referring to the fish, although many people do anyway.) However, when Europeans first adopted the word, they didn’t know its definition. The earliest reference in the Nelson Miner of June 15, 1895 said: “The jagged ridge

Longboarding for a good cause Three longboarders are making their way across B.C. with a goal of raising $50,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada, all in an effort to give back to the charity that helped the Hay family years ago. Mike Hay, son Easton, and friend Kieth Green began their 1,250-kilometre Journey of Dreams at the Alberta border and are boarding to Torino, Vancouver Island, to raise awareness and donations to support Ronald McDonald House. Their goal is to raise $50,000. The best way to donate is to go their Facebook page, Journey of Dreams. Under the “About Us” tab is a website link where donations can be made directly.
Longboarders (from left) Mike Hay, Keith Green and Easton Hay say they’ve had an amazing journey so far, meeting amazing people — here they pose with a gentleman who drove this car up from California, on his own kind of journey. Submitted

Place Names
Kokanee’s name spread far and wide continued from page A10
Somewhere along the West Arm of Kootenay Lake — probably at Lasca Creek, directly opposite Kokanee Creek — was what the Sinixt called Yaksakukeni: place of many kokanee. However, it was many more years before kokanee was commonly used by European settlers to refer to the fish. Two Kokanee post offices existed, the first apparently at the townsite, from 1902-11, and another at the landing,
from 1911-15. But what made kokanee a household word beyond West Kootenay was a conversation between Nelson mayor Tom Shorthouse and H.F. Puder of Interior Breweries in 1959 about the company’s recent move from Nelson to Creston. Shorthouse pointed to the potential of Kokanee Glacier Park — created in 1922 — as a tourist attraction and suggested the company name a beer brand Kokanee. “This thought really stuck,” Puder told Shorthouse a year
later, “and the more the name ‘Kokanee’ was considered, the better we liked it … To you goes full credit for originating the idea and you may be assured that you will be among the first to sample the product.” Kokanee pilsner beer first appeared in the spring of 1960 with a label featuring a painting of the glacier by Vancouver designer George McLachlan. While the artwork has changed over the years, it continues to use a glacier motif and remains one of BC’s best-selling brands. The name has since spread
far and wide. Lots of businesses adopted the name — including Kokanee Springs golf resort. There’s a Kokanee Bay in the Cariboo; a Kokanee elementary school near Seattle; and streets named Kokanee in Nelson, Cranbrook, Vancouver, Whitehorse, Ontario, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Colorado, California, and New Mexico. Most of these were presumably taken out of atlases and don’t have anything to do with our area, but there’s a Kokanee Bend fishing area in Montana. Another great year for Columbia Basin Trust $22 million in programs and services delivered to the Basin over 2014/15 As it approaches its 20th anniversary, Columbia Basin Trust is pleased to announce 2014/15 was another year of strong support to the area it serves in the Columbia Basin. Over the year the organization delivered nearly $22 million in programs and services to communities and residents, $17 million in new loans to Basin businesses and earned revenues of over $29 million.
The Trust works to strengthen the region’s social, economic and environmental well-being. In 2014/15, activities included establishing a new resource to support sports and physical activity, helping Junior Achievement expand into the Basin so youth can learn about entrepreneurship, renewing the Trust’s Social Strategic Plan and continuing to create a regional open-access broadband network.
The main way the Trust supports these activities is by investing in power projects. All power projects performed well over the year, and brought in revenues of over $22 million (out of total revenues of $29 million). In spring 2015 Waneta Expansion began operating, which will positively impact future revenues. The Trust also invests in market securities (stocks and bonds) and local real estate, and provides
loans to Basin-based businesses. “Because of the strong performance of our investments, our revenues were higher than anticipated, which means we were able to offer more programs and services to Basin residents,” said Neil Muth, Columbia Basin Trust President and Chief Executive Officer. “Moving into the future, we look forward to having even greater impact on well-being in the region.”
A major emphasis over the year involved engaging with residents to ask what’s important to them and how the Trust should focus its efforts. About 3,000 people provided input that will help the Trust make decisions, set priorities and manage how it provides programs and services to the region. Read more about the Trust’s performance in its 2014/15 Annual Service Plan Report at cbt.org/annualre-
port. For stories and photos of some of the projects it has supported, look for the magazine Your Trust (formerly Report to Residents) in your mailbox this fall. Columbia Basin Trust supports efforts to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the residents of the Columbia Basin. Trail Armoury receives $1M boost Valerie Rossi West Kootenay Advertiser
A $1 million investment from the federal government will give the Kemball Armoury in Trail a new lease on life. Kootenay Columbia MP David Wilks made the funding announcement when he stopped in Trail last week on behalf of Honourable Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence. Chief Warrant Officer Sharman Thomas said the funding will go a long way to improving the building, which dates back to the 1940s.
“We were very pleasantly surprised,” said Thomas. “The money coming in is something that’s very much needed and it’s going to be a positive influence on not just our unit, and the cadets and the Trail Pipe Band, as an example, but it’s going to be good for the local economy by creating some jobs in our area as well.” The funding will go toward replacing windows and doors, upgrading washrooms, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and fire safety systems, as well as a fresh coat of paint on the exterior walls. Work is scheduled to begin next summer and wrap up within two years time. The armoury is home to the 44 Engineer Squadron, of the 39 Combat Engineer Regiment in Trail. The regiment
is part of the 39 Canadian Brigade, Canada’s Army in B.C., and maintains service to Canada through the generation of reserve engineer soldiers that support overseas missions as well as civilian authorities during time of domestic emergency and security. “By improving the facility itself, you are going to have more people coming in not just locally but from outside the area,” said Thomas. A comfortable place to train may also attract new recruits and lead to more large-scale training efforts, he added. Last year, the facility hosted about 450 reserve soldiers, ranking from junior privates to senior officers, in Trail for the 2014 Kootenay Cougar training exercises.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay will reopen the Kaslo transfer station with full services on Friday, July 31. Upgrades began June 15 and are anticipated to be completed July 28. Construction will begin at the Balfour transfer station once the Kaslo construction is complete, which will cause Balfour to be closed from Aug. 1 to Oct. 2. The last full service day at Balfour will be July 31. “We are pleased with the progress at the Kaslo transfer station and are excited to continue these valuable upgrades at the Balfour transfer station,” says Tom Newell, chair of the central subregion resource recovery committee. “Since the RDCK worked closely with engineers and contractors to ensure minimal disruption of service, the construction at Kaslo has gone smoothly and we expect that the Balfour closure will be just as painless for residents.” To minimize disruption to the public during the construction period at the Balfour site the RDCK will install temporary facilities adjacent to the transfer station gate so that residents have access to basic disposal and recycling services: • Small loads of residential bagged mixed waste only will be accepted at Balfour on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the construction period. Bagged mixed waste will be charged at $2.50 per bag. • Larger loads of mixed waste, scrap metal and wood waste will not be accepted at the Balfour site during the construction period. These loads should be brought to the Grohman Narrows transfer station west of Nelson. The hours of operation for this site are Monday through Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. • Recycling bins will be made available during the construction period.

Nelson police officer stands trial for assault A judge is expected to deliver his verdict later this summer in the case of a Nelson police officer charged with assaulting a woman. Cst. Drew Turner stood trial in provincial court last week, accused of knocking Tawny Campbell unconscious by punching her in the face while she was in a police vehicle and handcuffed. She was arrested for being drunk in a public place and breaching a court order. Fellow officers testified that Turner arrived at the scene in plainclothes to provide back up and struck her twice,
briefly leaving her unconscious. Turner testified that he believed Campbell was about to attack him. Crown counsel says it was excessive force, but Turner’s lawyer says it was reasonable under the circumstances. Following a three-day trial, Judge Richard Hewson reserved judgement. A date for his decision will be fixed on Aug. 4. The incident occurred May 1, 2014. Turner remains on duty but has been assigned duties inside the police station until the matter is resolved.

WEEKLY
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20
LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23
You are in for a treat this week, Aries. You finally get to experience the results of all of your hard work. Celebrate with a dinner out or a good party.
Curiosity may get the better of you this week, Libra. It’s good to pursue your interests, but make sure you aren’t stepping on anyone’s toes along the way.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21
SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22
Taurus, calmly approach a difficult situation this week. Giving yourself time to carefully assess a problem will provide the most effective solution.
Scorpio, you desire quick answers, but no one seems to be moving at your pace this week. You might just have to buckle down and be patient. Answers will come in due time.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, a resolution to a problem you haven’t been able to solve is on the horizon. This will make things much easier in the long run, and your patience will pay off.
SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, a trip is enticing, but you have too many responsibilities on your plate to up and leave right now. You will have time to get away soon enough.
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, since you are a friendly person and the life of the party, it should come as no surprise that everyone wants to be your friend. Expand your social circle if you feel you have time.
CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18
Leo, sometimes you take on too much. Reevaluate your schedule and see if there are ways you can cut back on your commitments for a few days.
Someone or something may have turned you off of making a large purchase, Aquarius. Discuss your sudden change of heart with someone close to you.
VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22
PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20
Virgo, your goal for the time being is to take care of business and clear your calendar. You may be more than ready to indulge in some rest and relaxation.
Don’t turn your world upside down to take on another project, Pisces. You have plenty on your plate to keep you busy as it is.
Capricorn, take a hectic schedule day-byday. Everything will get done in time, and you just need to have a little patience. Distract yourself this week.
