City seeks regional strategy for geese BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN

FIELD WORK exchanged for room and board. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN

Maude Nijskens, a 24-year-old woman from Belgium who just comp l e t e d h e r m a s t e r ’s degree in bioengineering, crouches in the soil on a Yellow Point farm to pull

weeds from a row of carrots. Wyndlow Acres is the fifth farm Nijskens has worked on since coming to North America in February. The last was a winery near Monticello, Utah. Nijskens was so impressed by the sparse population and a landscape of natural stone arches, sandstone buttes and canyons dotted with Anasazi ruins that she decided to double the length of time she planned

to stay. “It was a big vineyard in Monticello, in Montezuma Canyon,” Nijskens said. “It was my first time there and I decided to stay one month.” Nijskens is a WWOOFer, a member of the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms network that connects people wanting to travel the world with organic farm owners offering room and board in exchange for labour.

Isobelle Morris and her husband Ian Wyndlow have six hectares of their 22-ha farm planted with carrots, squash, corn, asparagus, potatoes – 55 crops in all – that are sold at farmers’ markets and through the Farmship Growers Cooperative. Wyndlow Acres is the first Canadian farm Nijskens has worked on and her first experience with all aspects of farm production. See ‘PROGRAM’ /7

Nanaimo city officials want to build a new regional team to help control Vancouver Island’s Canada geese population. The City of Nanaimo is about to call on governments and wildlife experts to join forces on a regional strategy to manage a persistent Canada geese problem. The move will see the new group look beyond municipal boundaries at the bird’s population numbers and the tools they can employ to control the geese, including relocation and a potential limited cull. A regional strategy makes sense with the resident birds moving between east Vancouver Island communities, according to Kevin Brydges, the city’s environmental bylaw enforcement If Nanaimo, Instead of five officer. for example, took an to deal with of us working approach the birds here, is it a futile effort considerapart, we’re ing it may get more trying to get birds from the north south Island? together and and “Instead of five of us work together. working apart, we’re trying to get together and work together,” he said. Canada geese aren’t a native resident bird to the Island. Young were transplanted in the 1960s and ’70s as part of an introduction program to Vancouver Island to boost wildlife viewing and sport hunting opportunities, a city report shows. They didn’t learn to seasonally migrate, with little opportunity to learn behaviour from mature geese and like other urbanized animals like deer and rabbits, lack the stressors of predators and being out in the wild. They’re becoming a public concern, with feces scattered on lake beaches, parks and damage done to agricultural lands and estuaries.

Measures reduce geese From /1

The city has tried to manage populations with an egg-addling program and temporary measures like scaring geese with noisemakers and dogs, and relocation. Twenty-three geese were relocated to Cottle Lake, from Westwood, this year. Efforts have seen some successes. City staff members say there’s not the population boom there would be thanks to the egg-addling program, and at Westwood Lake, nests have dwindled from 18 two decades ago to one. But Al Britton, Nanaimo’s manager of parks

operations, says the city can’t seem to get below that nest number either and he likes the idea of a regional strategy. “We’re all in the same boat together,” he said. The city will be consulting with local governments and stakeholders like the Canadian Wildlife Service and Guardians of Mid-Island Estuaries in an effort to create a new committee. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Senior B T-men advance to finals

LACROSSE TEAM sweeps Langley in three games.

The Nanaimo Timbermen were anticipating a hardfought series, but it was never close. The T-men defeated the Langley Warriors 20-6 on Sunday at Frank Crane Arena to sweep the best-offive semifinal three games to none. Nanaimo also won by scores of 12-4 and 13-4. Ryan Hanna, T-men transi-

tion player, said his team’s depth was the difference. “We can call on any guy, any night and they can step into the lineup and play and that’s huge for us,” he said. Mike Maughan, T-men coach, said goalie Nick Patterson played “unbelievable,” but added that the team is strong in all facets. “The guys played really well…” Maughan said. “As we’ve got towards the end of the year, we’ve really showed how strong we are in all areas. Our depth is what’s going to be tough

for anybody to deal with that we play.” Ryan Forslund scored four goals, Hanna had three goals and three assists and Travis Mickelson also recorded a hat trick. Jon Diplock, Steve Higgs and Jonny Gill each scored twice. GAME ON … The finals aren’t yet scheduled, but are likely to begin Sunday (July 26) in Nanaimo. Ladner and Royal City are tied in the other semifinal with one win apiece. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Mayor wants resources for pot problem

RadIo REPoRTER, constable cycle to help cancer research.

Little can be done about pot dispensaries, according to Mayor Bill McKay, who says the federal government is not providing resources to enforce the law. Neither is the mayor willing to consider regulating medical marijuana dispensaries locally with business licences, calling it a stop-gap measure that would add legitimacy to the outlets. “We wouldn’t offer a house of prostitution a business licence in Nanaimo, so why would we do this? Both activities are illegal,” he said. Medical marijuana dispensaries are cropping up in the Harbour City, despite being seen as illegal by the federal government. Health Canada licenses only six producers in B.C., like Tilray, to sell to registered, medically prescribed patients and not from storefronts. In Nanaimo, however, a growing number of dispensaries are selling bud, tinctures, and pot brownies to people who self-declare a serious medical condition or have notes from medical professionals. McKay wants to make an emergency motion to the Union of B.C. Municipalities to urge the federal government to provide resources for Crown counsel and the RCMP, or expedite a Supreme Court challenge to new federal rules governing medical marijuana. “If the federal government wants us to take them out by enforcement, then give us the resources,” he said.

ilary Eastmure got her first taste of the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock when she came to the Island in 2013. Eastmure, 26, works for 91.7 Coast FM and was inspired by 2013 team member Jennifer Faerber and the loss of a close friend to cancer. “It sounded like such an amazing adventure and huge commitment, I immediately thought, ‘I’m going to do that one day,’ the moment I learned about it,” Eastmure said. Eastmure was a mountain biker. Her father owned a bike store in Ontario. She finds cycling on this level challenging and fun. “It’s really incredible to see how far we’ve come,” Eastmure said. “When our Mount Washington ride was cancelled due to rain last weekend it was a bit of a downer and then they said we’re going to ride 70 kilometres. My friend’s like, ‘You can ride 70 kilometres with your eyes closed.’ I would never have been able to say that before.” Being the 2015 Tour de Rock team’s sole media rider is chal-

2015 IS the 17th year of the tour, which has raised more than $20 million in donations since it started in 1998. THE RIdE, which starts sept. 20, covers about 1,100 kilometres from Port Alice to Victoria.

lenging professionally, too. “It’s because you are one of the team – and I really don’t feel any different – but then it’s hard to pull back and try to cover it from a media perspective,” she said. Const. Mihai Ilioi is with

Nanaimo RCMP’s property crimes unit. Ilioi, 39, is originally from Romania and came to Canada in 2003 and Nanaimo in 2010, the same year he was introduced to the Tour de Rock. “I was at the gala when the

tour got to Nanaimo,” Ilioi said. “I was helping and I saw all the emotions, the huge support the tour got and I said that this in a couple of years is something I would like to do.” This year he decided it was now or never. “When I hit that wall and it’s hard to keep going, I’m thinking about my family and friends that I’ve lost and my junior riders and that keeps me going.” Ilioi’s job means he often has to train on his own. He tackled Mount Washington on his own in early July, which was the toughest part of his training so far. “It’s mind over body, but it’s fun at the same time,” he said. “I gained so much from that ride I encourage everyone to do it.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Facilitator hired to address internal council issues By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN

Taxpayers could see upwards of $50,000 spent to help Nanaimo city councillors get along. Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay has hired a facilitator with The Integrity Group to help council address internal problems that he says is affecting its ability to do business. The work is expected to cost $50,000 and take until the end of the year, but the mayor also isn’t prepared to put a budget on something he sees as too important, adding, “if it takes more, it’s going to take more.” It was only two years ago that the City of Nanaimo released a governance report that revealed significant tension, name calling

and physical altercations among Nanaimo city councillors and city staff were undermining attempts at good governance. The situation isn’t much different today as it was then, according to McKay, who says the division and behaviour is much worse than most councils, morale is at an “all-time low” at city hall and the business of the city is not getting done. The search for a facilitator started in December, the same time Nanaimo’s new council was sworn in because McKay said he could see people on council were not going to work well with others. The process, which he says council is “100 per cent” in favour of, is about changing relationships and how people interact

with each other. There will be no report like there was in 2013. “It’s not important to have written reports that people can pick a part at will. This is about changing behaviour,” said McKay, who adds this is “much bigger” than producing a report and about actually getting results. Councillors Gord Fuller and Diane Brennan agree council has its issues. Fuller, who calls a facilitator necessary, believes the idea is to help them act more professionally together. There are a lot of strong personalities with strong beliefs, he said. “It hasn’t worked at this point. Hopefully we can get there,” he said. “It is a pretty divisive council.”

Brennan said she’s never sat on an elected body with so much trouble being civil. Neither has she encountered such dysfunction. She hopes a facilitator helps councillors soften their edges and be respectful. “You might be able to argue, well that’s the rough and tumble of politics and you just have to suck it up, which I don’t believe,” she said. “But what you can’t and shouldn’t say is that staff have to take it, too.” Facilitation started June. 1. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Over 30 years of community work on Gabriola Island has netted Susan Yates a 2015 Islands Trust Community Stewardship Award. Yates’s contributions are numerous and notable. Twenty-five years ago she was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the Gabriola Island recycling depot. She is also involved with the Gabriola community bus system and literacy promotion, reading to students at Gabriola Elementary School. Yates said the award for contributions to literary arts and environmental stewardship was unexpected. “Actually, I was surprised to

get it because I think all of the environmental stewardship I do is kind of low key ... but you know what? This community is so amazing in its support for individuals and so I feel like everything I’ve done here has just seemed like a natural progression of a way to contribute to my community,” Yates said. The recycling depot has grown and children comment on how they love when she reads to them, but Yates is most proud of the community bus system, GERTIE, which began operating in June 2013 and also received a 2015 stewardship award. The idea blossomed out of the Island Futures Society, a non-profit on Gabriola, following a transportation survey. She said she is only one of a group of “incredibly creative and resourceful people.” The service is beneficial, she said. The bus has seen more than 24,500 riders since its inception and sees more runs in

the summer to account for visitors. “I sometimes look back and think, ‘I can’t quite believe we’ve pulled this off,’ to be quite honest with you,” said Yates. “It was huge ... I was looking at a GERTIE schedule to see if I might be able to find my way from one pub to another on Saturday night using the GERTIE bus and indeed I can go from one end of the island to the other, which is a wonderful thing.” In terms of reading at the school, Yates said she derives satisfaction from that as well. She has a huge personal collection of children’s books, which she uses. “I often read stories, books, poems that relate to environmental stewardship. I purposely do that and I really like to focus on events like Earth Day, for example,” said Yates. “I try to get environmental messages in as subtly and as frequently as I can.” reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

“Here it’s great to see how a market works and all the work you have to do before going to market,” Nijskens said. Nijskens, whose older brother was a WWOOFer who also travelled to Canada after completing university, wanted to see more of the world and work outdoors and was already involved in the sustainability movement at home.

“So WWOOFing has everything in one spot,” she said. Wyndlow Acres has been a WWOOF host farm since 2011. There are about 30 such farms in the central Island region. With crops ripening early this year there’s plenty of work, Morris said, and WWOOFer labour helps keep the farm economically viable. Wyndlow Acres has hosted WWOOFers from South Korea, Japan and China. The

majority have come from Germany. “My children really enjoy having people from abroad and I think it’s a great experience for them to meet people from different countries and learn a few words in a different language,” Morris said. Drive patiently, get there safe With the crashes seen lately on Vancouver Island highways, and even the fender benders in and around the city, it’s clear drivers’ attention spans are diminished. Many of us are anxious to get to our destinations, whether it be work or shopping, heading out for holidays or travelling to the homes of friends or relatives for a barbecue. Regardless of the journey’s end, it’s worth taking a little extra time to plan ahead for the travel, whether it be the route you’re taking, the time you depart or a combination of the two. Both can pose challenges with more people on the roads, and create unnecessary stress that often leads to aggressive and unsafe driving actions. We’ve all seen people passing when it’s unsafe, driving at overly high speeds or tailgating, to name a few indiscretions. If no crash or mishap occurs as a result of such behaviours, the people victimized by such aggressive driving can count themselves lucky. But that’s not always the case. As the popular bumper sticker states, ‘Failure to plan on your part does not dictate an emergency on my part.’ How true. Demonstrating patience is not necessarily taught by driving schools or listed in any handbook, but it’s a critically important aspect of defensive driving. Preventing all examples of dangerous driving on the highway or lower-speed roads is impossible, so we have to ensure we’re prepared for the possibility of encountering bad drivers. Anticipating what other drivers are going to do, or could do, will go a long way toward ensuring the safety of yourself and any passengers you might have in the vehicle. At the very least, remember to breathe behind the wheel. You’ll get there eventually, even without driving like a Formula 1 racer.

going to pursue action against dispensaries,”said Nanaimo RCMP Supt. Mark Fisher. “It’s just, as I said, a matter of what evidence we gather and when.” The problem is these dispensaries are being allowed to continue without government standards, structures or regulations. No matter what public opinion might be when it comes to the legalization of marijuana, or the legitimacy of people’s need for the drug, public safety needs to come first. If dispensary doors remain open in Nanaimo, then there needs to be rules, quality controls and information about where their product is being produced. I’ve talked to dispensaries that require doctor’s notes and another that only requires people to self declare a serious medical condition. I saw a sign offering free joints to people who donate to the food bank, and heard about bunk weed that’s unable to be sold, rolled and used in a smoke session. That doesn’t speak to a ‘pharmacy’ environment and if a drug is being distributed because of a lack of action by authorities, then somewhere and at some level leadership needs to be taken to ensure there’s no more grey area clouding this issue. It’s either allowed and regulated, or banned and enforced but this growing business can’t be allowed to exist in limbo where it continues to operate in this city unchecked.

Dams issue setting precedent in province To the Editor,

Re: Council postpones dam vote, July 9. The Colliery dams issue sets an important precedent in that a duly elected civic government that has committed to taking appropriate steps is being overruled by the province. It is ironic that our mayor and staff appear to be doing everything to ensure that the majority on council do not succeed. Police are asking for more officers. This request has previously been denied. We have limited resources and councillors should have the right to define their priorities. Perhaps they may see that having a few more police officers on the force or improv-

ing a dangerous intersection will do more to ensure the safety of our citizens than ‘fixing’ a problem that we are unsure exists.

Jeff Solomon Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society

To the Editor,

Re: Council postpones dam vote, July 9. I live in the flood area of the Millstone River and there has been no concern about this imaginary flood that may or not happen or any concern about damage or death in this area. Where will this imaginary flood water come from? All the water from

the upper mountain areas will go to the upper dam. All the water from Morrell Lake, Mount Benson, Blackjack Ridge Mountain will go to the upper dam. Only a small amount of runoff water will enter into the Chase River system from area ditches. Who really knows what will happen during a major flood? No one can foresee the future. It would it be better to put money for Colliery dams aside in case there are other major tragedies within the City of Nanaimo that no one can imagine or foresee. Common sense does not seem to be part of the solution to the Colliery dams.

Multiplex won’t fit at proposed site To the Editor,

LAURA BLACKWELL/BLACK PREss

A fire in Tweedsmuir Provincial Park in northern B.C. consumes forest interspersed with beetle-killed pine trees.

Wildfires predicted in scripture To the Editor,

We are seeing increasing environmental disasters occurring in quick succession. The fires that have sparked across B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan are a preview of what the world will experience during the last seven years of history predicted by the Prophet Daniel. Bible prophecy is all converging at this point of time written in the Old and New Testament. One world government, one world economy and one word religion are predicted to form. We

see this today. Christ also made predictions of what the world would be like before He would set up His Earthly kingdom. As a Christian I’m not fearful because I know that I’m not appointed for wrath, but for the lost this is not the case. I’d recommend people dust off their bibles and read the scriptures pertaining to the second coming. You’d be amazed how it matches today’s news.

Re: Group pitches multiplex plan for downtown, June 16. Does Mayor Bill McKay really think that the only help the developer may need is for the city to move a few sewer lines? What are traffic egress and exit plans at Mill Street, Prideaux Street, Comox Road, etc.? Where will the thousands of cars park during events? How will the ecology of the Millstone River and the trailway access to Maffeo Sutton Park be preserved? I look forward to the redevelopment of the property, but it is not suitable for a 5,000-seat multiplex. Place the muchneeded arena on the outskirts, near the parkway.

On a recent visit to the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, our six-yearold granddaughter sustained a head injury in the wave pool. Fortunately it wasn’t serious and she’s fine. However, I wanted to write

about the experience and to thank all those involved. As soon as she was hurt, four lifeguards and first aid personnel came running over to administer help. We then determined that EMS personnel should be

called, who arrived within five minutes, checked her out and determined it wasn’t necessary to transfer her to hospital for further evaluation. I was extremely impressed, not only with the speedy response, but also

with the professional and sensitive treatment given to our granddaughter. My wife and I recently moved from Alberta and absolutely love Nanaimo, the weather, the facilities such as the aquatic centre (one

AUTHOR TO sign books on Saturday.

Rose Jolliffe is like any normal young woman living in Western Canada during the late 1930s. But when the Second World War breaks out in 1939, Jolliffe joins the air force and becomes an aerial photographic interpreter. Eventually, Jolliffe finds herself in the United Kingdom at the Royal Air Force base Medmenham, spying on the Axis powers. Yet, despite all the excitement, Jolliffe finds herself lonely, missing the prairies and heartsick. That’s the basis behind former newspaper reporter turned author Elinor Florence’s debut novel, Bird’s Eye View. On Saturday (July 25) Florence will be signing copies of her book at Chapters, 6670 Mary Ellen Dr.

“It is the only novel written about a Canadian woman in uniform during World War Two,” she said. Bird’s Eye View was released late last year by Dundurn Press.

Elinor Florence speaks and signs copies of her debut book, Bird’s Eye View, at Chapter’s at Woodgrove Centre on Saturday (July 25) from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Florence began her writing career as the agriculture reporter for the Western Pro-

Prices in Effect

ducer in Saskatoon. She would go on to work for the Winnipeg Sun, Vancouver Province, Red Deer Advocate and was a regular contributor for Reader’s Digest. Florence began writing Bird’s Eye View in 2010. She says it was a photo of a female aerial photographer that inspired her research the role of women in the war. “The more I researched that, the more I realized how little had been written about them,” Florence said. “There were more than 50,000 women in uniform and we really don’t hear a darn thing about them.” Florence speaks and signs books at Chapters on July 25 at 11 a.m. Copies of the book are available for purchase in store or online at www.amazon.ca. For more information on Florence, please visit www.elinorflorence.com. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

YOUR “NANAIMO MERCHANT FLEET” WELCOMES YOU

Marine Marine Festival & “Great” International World Championship Bathtub Race Nanaimo harbour was the scene of a bathtub race extravaganza at the first race in 1967, which was Canada’s 100th Birthday. As the City of Nanaimo’s “Centennial Event” more than 200 tubbers in every type of watercraft imaginable entered the fun competition and amazingly, 47 completed the 36 mile course to Vancouver’s Fisherman’s Cove across the Straits of Georgia. The race continued crossing the Strait of Georgia finishing at Kitsilano Beach until 1996. In 1997 the finish line was

Captain Debra Pelletier

changed to Departure Bay in Nanaimo covering a very grueling course that starts in Nanaimo Harbor, goes around Entrance Island, northwest to Winchelsea Islands, around a naval ship, past Schooner Cove and then back to Departure Bay beach. Starting in 2015 the race will follow a similar course with the finish line in Nanaimo Harbour by the Frank Ney Statue at Maffeo-Sutton Park. In the early days it was indeed a challenge to just get past the starting line in

the choppy confusion caused by an extra 785 small and large observation and escort boats in Nanaimo harbor. From the confusion of a first time bathtub race in 1967, the Nanaimo to Nanaimo “Great” INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BATHTUB RACE & 4 day Marine Festival has evolved. Where once a select band of tubbers were the highlight they now share the spotlight with many other land and water events which are interesting and often spectacular to watch.

Experts’ Advice

The Family Law Act (FLA) in British Columbia states that unmarried spouses who have lived together for at least two years are both entitled to an equal division of family property after separation. However, the FLA also states that gifts are excluded property and not subject to equal division. Unfortunately, it is not that simple as some courts have held that when excluded property is used to purchase a home subsequently registered in the names of both spouses, the exclusion is lost. To be safe, always obtain a cohabitation (or prenuptial) agreement that outlines your intentions regarding the gift in the event that you and your partner separate. NOTE: THIS INFORMATION IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE, AND YOU SHOULD NOT RELY ON IT AS SUCH. TO ENSURE YOUR INTERESTS ARE PROTECTED, FORMALLY SEEK THE ADVICE OF A LAWYER.

I am taking anti depressants, and am wondering what I can do nutritionally to help as well?

Did you know that up to 95% of your serotonin receptors are actually in your gut? SSRI medications DR. KAREN L. FRASER not only affect brain function, but they also impact the digestive tract interfering with your body’s ability to absorb nutrients – thus, common side effects of SSRI medications is digestive upset. If you are taking an anti depressant you will have the best results by optimizing your nutrition with a healthy diet, healing the gut, as well as taking supplements that contain nutrients that are particularly important for neurotransmitter production as well as replenish deficiencies that are caused by your medication. The top 3 nutrients to consider supplementing with are: Melatonin, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), and B vitamins. Supplementation with at least 3 mg of melatonin before bed may help replenish your melatonin stores, 100 mg of high quality CoQ10 (and yes, brand makes a difference!) will help your cells have the energy they need for brain and body function, a good B complex vitamin (with B2, B6, B12) will help your brain and body reach it’s optimal potential. By optimizing your diet, healing your gut, and by taking appropriate nutritional supplementation you can support healing your body and your mind, and reduce the side effects of your prescriptions. ARE YOU TIRED OF EATING ONLY THE FOODS YOU CAN, NOT THE FOODS YOU WANT?

Too often this question is answered with a resounding MICHELLE ALLAN “Yes”, both by denture wearers and those with missing NELSON BOOS DD RD natural teeth. In addition, there is frequently a lack of confidence and a great deal of embarrassment due to missing natural teeth, broken and ill-fitting dentures and the inability to eat certain foods. The limited food choices available for those unable to chew properly includes overly processed foods with inadequate nutritional value and very few manageable options for fruits, vegetables and proteins - like meat or nuts. A restrictive diet results in poor nutrition which can lead to a multitude of health issues – including heartburn/acid reflux, obesity, gastrointestinal issues and more – which can significantly affect the quality of your life. By visiting a denturist, the solution to your chewing dilemma is easier to solve than you might think. A denturist uses a team approach to find the right solutions for you. Our goal is to meet your Personal and unique needs, and as such, will work in collaboration with other important members of the dental communitylike your dentist, oral surgeon and other specialists. At Pacific Denture Centre laboratory work is performed on the premises by the denturist who sees you and other members of our team, thus, ensuring the quality of care is customized and personal. Customized denture treatments leading to properly fitting and functioning dentures can improve your oral health, which impacts your overall health, and of course your smile!

Can my wife and I do a Joint Will? Joint Wills, which basically combine the Will of two people into a single TIAH M. WORKMAN document, are not recognized under British Columbia law. Most couples create “mirror Wills” which are two separate Wills that are identical in all respects. For example, a husband and wife can make mirror Wills where they name each other as Trustee, they have the same alternate Trustee, same guardian for their children and have the same distribution of the residual estate. My eyes are often dry feeling, but sometimes water. Will drops DR. PAUL GENEAU help? When the eyes are overly dry, they may water reflexively. It may help to use artificial tear drops to prevent the watering. Dry eyes are very common, but can have many underlying causes. Tear drops alone may not be adequate. No, of course not. You could say that about exercise or about going to the dentist. If you go to a dentist to have a problem corrected, once it is repaired, he or she will recommend you come in for a checkup periodically to nip any problems in the bud. Most people see that this is a good idea and follow up, but there are many who simply wait until the next major problem. Your chiropractor will recommend periodic checkups to prevent future episodes of pain and disability. In both dentistry and chiropractic, corrective care rather than preventive care is not as effective for promoting long-term health or preventing degenerative changes. Whether you choose to do so is entirely up to you. For corrective help with current problems or just a preventive check-up, call our office, visit our website, or feel free to e-mail us with any questions.

Is it true that if you go to a chiropractor you’ll have to keep going for the rest of your life?

How can I make sure advertising will work for my company? Message: The essential first step in advertising is to figure out what message to send to your customers. Advertising is simply a way to send a message based on your marketing plan and sound business strategy. Repetition: An advertising campaign is a planned appeal to the client’s potential customers, using the power of repetition. The power of repetition reinforces the advertisers message. Consistency equates with familiarity, familiarity equates with confidence and confidence equates with sales.

“Fast vs. Slow Weight Loss”

“The faster you lose weight, the faster you’ll gain it back!” or “It’s not healthy to lose weight too quickly”. Has a well-meaning friend or relative ever told you this? When it comes to dieting - everyone likes to give SUE BRIEN their opinion, but what does science say? According to one well performed study, “fast losers” had greater weight loss and were no more likely to regain their weight than a “slow loser”. This study was based on how likely a dieter was to reach their goal of 10% weight reduction, and how likely each group was to regain the weight they lost. There were 3 groups tested: Fast loser- 1.5 lbs or greater per week Moderate loser- 1/2 to 1 lb per week Slow loser - 1/2 lb or less per week At the end of the study, those who were “fast losers” were 5.1 times more likely to reach their goal than those in the “slow loser” group, and 2.7 times more likely than those in the “moderate loser” group. Those in the “fast loser” group were more motivated by seeing the progress from week to week to continue on their weight loss program, and there was no indication that the “fast loser” was in any health danger by losing at this rate! It’s yours to choose.....fast or slow? Yours in weight loss....Sue

Tutor What is summer brain drain? How do I ensure it doesn’t happen to my son this summer?

AMBER SCOTCHBURN BSW, B.Ed

The summer brain drain is a learning loss which happens with math skills, specifically interpreting and calculating math problems. Although it’s common, it’s neither inevitable nor irreversible! Your child doesn’t have to fall victim to summer brain drain. You can make an effort to keep his brain engaged during the summer and provide enriching experiences without even trying too hard. Take him to the grocery store, give him $20 to buy items for lunch for the week and talk it through with him. With him at the beach, have him collect rocks! The rocks can be used to keep his skills of predicting sharp. Also, have him dig a hole in the sand! Then, have him guess how many rocks are needed to fill the hole and ask him to explain why he guessed that number. Next, actually fill the hole by counting the numbers of rocks it takes. Discuss why his prediction was accurate or not! Contact us for more simple idea’s to stop the summer brain drain!

Bankruptcy

My property is still on a septic system and it is getting old. Can I connect to the City sanitary sewer?

What should I expect from hearing aids?

Can income tax debts be extinguished through a consumer proposal?

Hearing aids can improve comJEFF CAMPBELL, RHIP munication ability for a hearing impaired person but hearing aids cannot restore perfectly normal function to a damaged auditory system. Good outcomes depend on many factors such as the type and severity of the hearing loss, how long the hearing loss has been untreated, the age of the user, the listening environments, the type of hearing aid and how much the hearing aids are used. Call me today for a complimentary hearing evaluation and stay connected to the sounds you love.

If the City sanitary sewer is readily accessible in your area, it would be possible to connect to the main sewer line. It is a good idea to upgrade from an aging septic system to the City sanitary sewer system before any damage occurs from a malfunction. A permit and inspection is necessary for the hookup so the City can keep accurate records and ensure all standards are met. Excavation for the new sewer line will be necessary and will connect the house to the main sewer line. Your septic system will also be pumped and decommissioned. Your new sewer line will then be fully functional.

VI OUTDOOR provides complimentary siding inspections and estimates. 250-739- 9273 viom.ca.

The good news is that tax debts can be GARETH SLOCOMBE, CA, CIRP extinguished through filing a consumer proposal even if the tax debt represents the majority of the debt to be compromised. In order for a consumer proposal to be accepted and binding on all your creditors (including tax debts) you only need 51% by dollar value voting in favour of it. As such, tax debts can easily be compromised when they are less than 50% of your total debt even if Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) votes against it. If your tax debts represent the majority of your debt to be included in the consumer proposal, CRA will often vote in favour of it if it provides for a reasonable return (of perhaps 30% to 50%) paid over 36 to 60 months. However, it is important that the payments are both affordable for you and generally consistent with the monthly amount that you would be required to pay if you had filed for bankruptcy instead. Since consumer proposals often run for at least a few years, it is very important that you are comfortable with your ability to keep up with the payments over that time.

Hypnotherapy Can Hypnotherapy improve my self-confidence and selfesteem?

People often assume that self-esteem and selfconfidence are one and the same things. But a TRACY L. THOMPSON person might be confident in their abilities and talents but yet still have low self-esteem; the two concepts are related but yet different. For example, people suffering from a lack of self-esteem will usually find it difficult to answer ‘yes’ to questions such as, ‘do I like myself’ or ‘do I deserve to be happy’? Because of this negative belief it prevents them from achieving the best in their life. The funny thing is though, when you change this belief into loving yourself, your self-esteem improves, which then of course makes you more confident. And then when you are more confident in different areas of your life, you begin to increase your overall sense of self-esteem. So ultimately, you can work on improving both issues at the same time. By using hypnotherapy we help by using positive imagery and have the person focus mainly on those things that he or she is most confident in and then change any negative self-talk into positive thoughts and images thus improving both self-esteem and confidence in all areas of life such as relationships, career, socializing, and state of mind.

Experts’ Advice

If it’s done correctly, a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) or The Free Home Evaluation TIMTIM WAITWAIT P.R.E.C. can be the next best thing to an appraisal in approximating the value of a property. The purpose of the CMA is to analyze data from properties similar to the subject property that has sold recently in order to project the realistic price at which the subject property would sell. I’m not an appraiser, but what I’ve always done is make upward and downward adjustments to the projected value of the subject property based on features and characteristics of the comparables I use. Some are based on “gut” feelings while other adjustments come about through rules of thumb I have developed from experience. Putting a value on real estate is an inexact science at best, and this methodology has worked pretty well for me over the years. I use a completely different method for projecting the value of land and property with residential development potential. How can you tell if the CMA you’ve been given is worth more than the piece of paper it’s written on? Call me at 713-1223 or email tim@timwait.com and I will let you know.

Baseball teams have a blast in exhibition

I

HARBOURCATS DEFEAT Pirates by 10-9 score.

Sr. A T-men snap streak BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

A special event at the ballpark really was a special day for the Nanaimo Pirates. The exhibition game between the Hub City Paving Pirates and the Victoria HarbourCats on Sunday was everything the teams would have hoped for, with the West Coast League visitors winning a wild one, 10-9. The biggest baseball crowd of the summer at Serauxmen Stadium got another chance to cheer some Pirates alumni and saw some fireworks and some feel-good moments. “With all the hard work the guys put in, the game pays you back occasionally, and at an event like this, it paid back a whole lot of guys,” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. Early on, the game wasn’t shaping up to be a close contest, as the HarbourCats hit a grand slam and pushed the score to 5-0 before the Pirates had even come to bat. But Nanaimo came back to tie the game 8-8 before HarbourCats second baseman P.J. Floyd’s third home run of the game put Victoria up 10-8.

Victoria HarbourCats catcher Zach Bonneau, left, and pitcher Alex Rogers look on as Nanaimo Pirates alumnus Jordan Romine is congratulated at home plate by Matt Skingle and Brady Rogers after a ninth-inning home run. The HarbourCats defeated the Pirates 10-9 in the exhibition game Sunday afternoon at Serauxmen Stadium.

Pirates alumnus Jordan Romine hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to close the gap, but HarbourCats pitcher Alex Rogers got the next three batters out to record the save. Floyd said the HarbourCats enjoyed the exhibition. “We came out kind of loose and had some fun with it, but also took it somewhat seriously,” he said.

Floyd also hit a triple to go with his three home runs. “I was just going up there swinging,” he said. “They gave me good pitches to hit and I took advantage of it.” For the Pirates, playing against guys like that can be a good thing, said the manager. “They see, in this one game, the next level. They’re playing against guys that are bigger and

stronger than they are and they’re hoping to become those players and go to the schools they go to,” Doug Rogers said. “So it just automatically brings the energy level up and the level of play goes up, too.” He thanked the HarbourCats for coming to Nanaimo. “It’s good for baseball in this community when people come out and see this,” he said.

GAME ON … The Pirates played their last two B.C. Premier Baseball League regular-season games on the mainland against the Abbotsford Cardinals on Monday after press time. The Pirates start the playoffs this Saturday (July 25) against a to-be-determined opponent. Game times are noon and 2:30 p.m. at Serauxmen Stadium. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Timbermen lacrosse player makes it a doubleheader Steve Higgs enjoyed winning a lacrosse game so much, he did it twice. The senior B Nanaimo Timbermen forward played a true doubleheader on Sunday at Frank Crane Arena. In the afternoon he was offensive player of the game in a 20-6 playoff win against the Langley Warriors, then, an hour and a half later, he suited up for the senior A T-men and helped them to a 9-8 win over the Maple Ridge Burrards. The senior A team was short a left-hander up front due to illness, so coach Kaleb Toth asked senior B general manager Shawn Swanson if any guys might be available.

“Anything to help out the Nanaimo lacrosse community; it’s been good to me,” said Higgs. “So of course I said yes and got in there and it was a lot of fun.” He scored a goal in the night game, so, along with his two in the afternoon game, it added up to a rare kind of hat trick. “He gave us a hell of an effort and worked real hard,” Toth said. Higgs might have a chance to repeat the feat again sometime soon – Presidents’ Cup nationals sometimes involves two games in one day. “It’s good training for that … for hopefully when we go there, which we will, I’m sure,” he said.

Lacrosse player Steve Higgs takes a shot on goal with the senior B Nanaimo Timbermen on Sunday at Frank Crane Arena, then passes the ball with the senior A Timbermen, also on Sunday at Frank Crane.

The Nanaimo Timbermen were finally able to snap a long losing streak. The senior A lacrosse squad defeated the Maple Ridge Burrards 9-8 on Sunday night at Frank Crane Arena. The T-men (3-11), after winning their first two games of the Western Lacrosse Association season, had lost 11 straight to fall out of the playoff picture. “It’s a relief getting the monkey off our back finally, breaking that streak…” said Zak Boychuk, T-men goalie. “It’s a lot of games to lose in a row. You can get down on yourself. We loosened up, had some fun, started working smart … Some bounces finally started going our way. Thankfully. It was about time.” The game was close all the way, tied after one period, tied after two, and then tied 8-8 until Jake Emms found a rebound in front of a wide-open net at the end of a goal-crease scramble with four and a half minutes left. The T-men made the lead hold up. “The guys worked really hard and the one thing that they did different today is they worked smart,” said Kaleb Toth, Timbermen coach. He said his team limited its turnovers, made the right decisions in transition and hustled to win loose balls in front of their crease. Toth said the T-men played for pride. “No one likes to lose, especially 11 in a row,” the coach said. “The guys were tired of losing and they wanted to win.” Cody Bremner led Nanaimo’s offence with four goals and Mac Johnston had two goals and four assists. Doug Langlois, Steve Higgs and Emms were the other scorers. Boychuk made 45 saves in the win. GAME ON … The Timbermen visit the Langley Thunder on Wednesday (July 22), then host the Burnaby Lakers on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Tourism report Sabrina Sawchuk, of Nanaimo, reacts to the report after touching off the powder in one of Nanaimo’s two historic cannons. Passengers from the Silversea Cruise Lines Silver Shadow and a few lucky Nanaimo residents were invited to fire the cannons to help celebrate the ship’s inaugural visit to Nanaimo Wednesday. Senior B T-men advance to finals

I
