our pets will be able to breathe easier after an emergency, thanks to a gift to the local fire department last week. Strathcona Toyota has donated Pet Oxygen Mask Kits to help firefighters administer oxygen when responding to calls. Terry Negrijn, Dealer Principal and Partner of Strathcona Toyota, recently saw these masks being donated by a veterinary hospital in Langley to their local fire department and thought, “what a great idea!” So he decided to get some into this community, as well. The mask works seamlessly with existing oxygen supply systems fire crews use to treat smoke inhalation, but provides delivery of that life-saving air through masks that are specially-designed for pets. The three different sizes of masks in the kit mean that any pet – be it ferret, guinea pig, bird, dog or cat – can be given oxygen by members trained in oxygen delivery. “We are very excited and very pleased to be a part of this effort to help save our furry family members when in need,” said Kim Jen-

however, as the number of property crimes – specifically break and enters – has increased over that same period. In 2010, the number of incidents police responded to that qualified as “violent Criminal Code violations” – which include any violation causing death, sexual assaults, violations against children, abductions, threats and illegally discharging a weapon, for example – was 730. That number has dropped every year since and was down to 469 in 2014. Property crime, however – which includes breaking and entering, possession of stolen property, motor vehicle theft, mischief and fraud, for example – has remained an issue within the community. Police addressed 1,448 incidents in 2014, up slightly from the 1,432 in 2013.

Part of that increase has to do with break and enters being significantly on the rise again, according to the CSI. After decreasing almost 50 per cent between 2010 and 2013, 184 break and enters were addressed by police in 2014, an increase of over 50 per cent from the 116 the year before and the highest number seen since 2010, when 201 incidents were reported. Motor vehicle theft saw an even larger increase. Sixty cars were stolen in Campbell River in 2014, more than double the 28 stolen the year before. Drug violations are seemingly on the decrease, however. Police responded to 192 “incidents” involving illegal substances in 2014 compared to 318 the year before. Of the 192, 135 were for “possession of cannabis.” Nat iona l ly, cr ime numbers are at the lowest they’ve been since 1969. The total number

Instances of “possession of heroin” have seen a 140 per cent rise in the past 10 years, while instances of “child p or nog raphy” have increased a whopping 264 per cent. The release of the 2014 crime statistics by Statistics Canada was accompanied by a release by the British Columbia Integrated Child Exploitation Unit (BC ICE) echoing the national child pornography statistics, citing “a troubling number of people in the province exchanging digital child pornography.” Between April 1 and Sept. 31 of last year, the release says, BC ICE investigators tracked “known illegal material” that would qualify as child pornography being exchanged online and found 1,228 unique

instances of the material being shared in B.C. “The extent of the problem is disturbing,” said Inspector Ed Boettcher, officer in charge of BC RCMP Communications. “A single exchange of material where a child was victimized is too many, this many instances over a six month period is tragic.” Investigations are ongoing in an attempt to prosecute offenders, Boettcher says in the release. “For those that think they can engage in this type of criminal act and hide, you should know that we have the expertise to find you. Boaters, salmon may start to feel impact of drought Water levels in the QuinsamCampbell river system are dropping to the point where boat access to the reservoirs will be difficult and conserving enough water to accommodate pink salmon runs will be challenging, according to BC Hydro. In the month since BC Hydro’s June 22 update on water inflows into the Campbell River, the river has dropped to exceptionally low levels, below the power utility’s record low projections. The monthly average of water inflows into the Campbell River system from various upper watershed streams was 55 m3/s for April, 44 m3/s for May, 22 m3/s for June, and 11 m3/s to date for July, according to BC Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson. April is below average and the rest of those months are all record low inflow averages. The historical water inflow average is 66 m3/s for April, 105 m3/s for May, 110 m3/s for June, and 80 m3/s to date for July. The current water inflow rate is about eight m3/s. The previous record low

water inflow rate for this time of year was 20 m3/s. BC Hydro is discharging about 28 m3/s or basically three and a half times the actual upstream inflows into the Campbell River for fish habitat below the John Hart generating station. The Upper Campbell Reservoir/ Buttle Lake is currently at 215.7 metres, approximately three metres below normal for this time of year. BC Hydro now forecasts the reservoir reaching around 214 metres in September if the warm, dry conditions continue. That’s about one metre lower than forecasted just a month ago. The Lower Campbell Reservoir/ McIvor Lake is currently at 175.85 meters, which is a little more than a metre below normal for this time of year. It may dip to 175 metres by the time the summer is over. Both reservoir levels are far below previous records for this time of year. level. “What this all means is boat access in the upper reservoirs will be limited and in some areas not possible,” Watson says. “It also means boating hazards in some areas of the reservoirs where wood debris and rock are close to the surface.” For the Campbell River, the 28 m3/s will be maintained for fish habitat through the summer. For the Quinsam River, which flows into the Campbell River, BC Hydro, in close coordination with government fish agencies, has a minimum flow rate below the Wokas dam of 0.3 m3/s. The hope was that when the adult pink salmon arrive to spawn in late August, the flow rate would be increased to 0.7 m3/s to help them move up the river system. Even though the major river flow reduction was put in place early in the season to conserve water for the pink salmon, the ability in a month’s time to increase flows is looking challenging. BC Hydro has added three Campbell River flow gauges to its web site for fishers to emergency responders to follow year-round. “These gauges are near real-time and show river flow rates and river level heights,” Watson says. “Whether you are interested in accessing the river for fishing, or following the flow rates and heights of the river during flood risk management operations, this information will be helpful for people.” There is a river gauge on the Campbell River just upstream of the Quin-

sam River confluence, a gauge that shows the combined Campbell River and Quinsam River flows, and the river height near the Campbell River Lodge. BC Hydro has been closely monitoring and anticipating a dry spring and summer, although the extent of these current drought conditions is remarkable. BC Hydro’s proactive flow adjustments on Vancouver Island are to ensure sustainable water flows for fish, local energy reliability requirements, and domestic water supplies in the event this drought last into the early fall. BC Hydro has the benefit of an integrated hydroelectric system of reservoirs, dams and generating stations in different climactic zones across the Peace, Columbia and South Coast regions. This allows BC Hydro to manage its operations with various degrees of flexibility during unusually dry or wet conditions. Currently, BC Hydro is forecasting to have more than enough energy to meet provincial demand during this fiscal year. It just means more electricity is being supplied to Vancouver Island through our undersea cables that connect to the provincial power grid.

Logs spilled onto the side of the road. A truck laying on its side. An ambulance speeding away from the site. This was the scene when I arrived at Echo Lake Monday morning. It must be a scary feeling driving one of those big trucks and feeling it keel over onto its side. This is when you’re probably thankful for your seatbelt as it holds you in place, preventing forward (and perhaps, ‘sideward’) momentum from pitching you through the front windshield or, given the nature of the accident, trying to punch you through the roof of the cab. We don’t have any report as to why the logs didn’t stay on the truck but it’s undoubtedly related to the hairpin turn the driver just negotiated. The logs shifted and carried the truck with it, busting free at some point and spilling onto the opposite side of the road while the truck landed on its side in the opposite lane. It’s always amazed me that more noise has not been made about how tight a squeeze it is to get Highway 28 around Echo Lake. ● Viewpoint is a disgrace As one newly moved to Race Point Road, I am appalled by the Seymour Narrows “Viewpoint.” What viewpoint? The area is so overgrown it is a disgrace, and to promote the Seymour Narrows/ Ripple Rock as an important event in the history of Campbell River is laughable. The city or whomever needs to address the growth of brush and scrub trees that obliterate the view, and provide a litter barrel for those who seem to find the poor-excuse-for-a-lookout parking lot as their garbage area. A lot of traffic stops there, and I have personally heard the disappointing comments re: the lack of any view and I am so tired of seeing the coffee cups, wrappers and everything in between tossed into the trees or left on the pavement. Let’s clear this area up and take some pride in the viewpoint that honours a very real and important maritime event in our history. Jody McConnan Campbell River

With the crashes seen lately on the region’s highways and arterial roads, and even the fender benders on the commute and in parking lots, it’s clear something is happening. We wonder if drivers’ attention spans are diminished this time of year or if some more scientific reason exists for what seems to be an increased number of traffic incidents. For certain, at this time of year many of us are anxious to get to our destinations, whether it be work or shopping, heading out for holidays or travelling to the homes of friends or relatives for an evening or weekend barbecue or gathering. Regardless of the journey’s end, it’s worth taking a little extra time to plan ahead for the travel, whether it be the route you’re taking, the time you depart or a combination of the two. Both can pose challenges with more people on the roads, and create unnecessary stress that often leads to aggressive and unsafe driving actions. We’ve all seen people passing when it’s unsafe, driving at overly high speeds or tailgating, to name a few indiscretions. If no crash or mishap occurs as a result of such behaviours, the people victimized by such aggressive driving can count themselves lucky. But that’s not always the case. As the popular bumper sticker states, “Failure to plan on your part does not dictate an emergency on my part.” How true. Demonstrating patience is not necessarily taught by driving schools or listed in any handbook, but it’s a critically important aspect of defensive driving. Preventing all examples of dangerous driving on the highway or lower-speed roads is impossible, so we have to ensure we’re prepared for the possibility of encountering bad drivers. Keep an eye on the road ahead, including the traffic directly in front of you, and scan side to side, in case you’re going to miss the traffic light. Anticipating what other drivers are going to do, or could do, will go a long ways toward ensuring the safety of yourself and any passengers you might have in the vehicle. At the very least, remember to breathe when behind the wheel. You’ll get there eventually, even without driving like a knucklehead. – Black Press

fire was just over the top on the east side. Acting on a tip from a fellow fire chaser, I got a better view further along. I drove my trusty Toyota Corolla up a side road and got a great view across the valley of the firefighting action. By this time the bomber had left the job to helicopters relaying water buckets to dump on the smoking woods while ground crews worked to bring the fire under the control. By making the effort to get out there, I was rewarded with a good view of the fire. I shot some pictures and some video and judging by the response on social media, lots of people were also able to get a good view of a dramatic event. This kind of coverage tells a number of stories but one of the most rewarding is we get to see the work our emergency service personnel do. By seeing the drama, albeit through the lens of a camera, we also get a sense of the power and impact of these incidents and consequently learn not to take them lightly. Too often we discuss tragedy and mayhem as though it was a T.V. show. Sometimes a reporter’s camera makes it real.

Asking the right LNG questions Letters

Re: Ask not what LNG can do for BC, ask what BC can do for LNG (iRICE, Campbell River Mirror, Wed., July 22) Great cartoon published on the Mirror opinion page. These are the kind of questions that need to be asked of our giveaway B.C. resource premier: ■ How much gas flowing out of the gas well heads actually belongs to the citizens of BC in terms of royalties?

■ Where are the drilling rigs manufactured? ■ Where are the high pressure pumps manufactured? ■ Where do the well casings, pipes and valves come from, are they made from Canadian steel? ■ Where do the LNG plant chillers, compressors, storage tanks and the specialized low temperature metal tank liners come from are they manufactured in Canada?

■ Are the skilled personnel required to construct the LNG plants being trained in Canada? ■ Is the alliance of LNG companies looking for government subsidies, be it from business, municipal tax, BC income tax, PST relief and investment tax? ■ One should read along with the Premier, the late David Lewis MP book, “Corporate Welfare Bums” pub-

lished by Lorimer Jan.1, 1972. The Premier of British Columbia has set her political survival on establishing LNG production and promising 75,000 jobs which are not likely to be there. A lot of gas can be extracted in 25 years and will be gone possibly with the exception of deposits difficult and extremely expensive to extract. The suggestion is that the gas should be left in the ground until the entire

means of production is in the hands of Canadians, as part of an integrated energy plan. Advice should be sought from Norway as to how they managed to control resource production and obtain a heritage fund worth more than $1.1 trillion, or will BC end up like Alberta? people who can’t afford to contribute in the first place is virtually meaningless. Pension and income splitting measures only matter (or benefit anyone) if you actually have a partner to split them with. The whopping $1,500 Home Accessibility Tax Credit assumes that these senior women have the other $20-40K in loose pocket change that will be necessary to undertake the renovations needed to keep them in their homes. Even the much-touted Guaranteed Income Supplement is clawed back if these women take any initiative to supplement their meager income with a small part-time job (This is assuming

that they are still capable of working in their 70s, 80s and 90s). Reducing the minimum withdrawal requirements on RSP/ RRIF funds is laughable to people who have little or no savings of this type. Most of these women had scant opportunity to build RSPs, or private and government pensions. They were the generations who stayed home to raise us. The reality for these women is that they usually live in substandard accommodation (and pay too much for it). They shop for most of their needs in the local thrift stores, and increasingly often are required to use community food banks between pension paydays. They also have

to make choices between purchasing needed medications, paying utilities, and having basic medical/dental/hearing and optometry services. These women may be old, but they are not yet dead and they vote. Even if they need a ride to the polling station on election day, I sense that they will be out in full force. B.C. has an obligation to its future citizens Natural gas has a value to B.C.’s citizens and it is a non-renewable resource. Someday it will all be gone, then what? When that day comes, its sale must leave our children with a very sizeable fund. A fund that can provide for whatever energy source that has taken the place of natural gas. Our children or grandchildren or grandchildren deserve such a fund. Any legislation passed today must ensure the future of B.C. It must provide some

gain for the corporation that sells the gas for us otherwise there is no point in the corporation selling the gas. B.C. has no obligation to the corporation, but B.C. has an obligation to its future citizens. It is the fiduciary duty of BC’s legislature to provide for B.C.’s future generations. The idea of legislating a tax and royalty system that binds the province for 25 years is a potential abrogation of the fiduciary duty of B.C.’s legislature. Whatever legislation

passed to enable the sale of natural gas must provide the province with direct benefits, as well as indirect benefits. The corporation must pay a royalty for the gas that is independent of the market and the corporation must pay an income tax. Of course, if the corporation has no income, then the income tax will

Royals put on a show in River City The Bantam AAA Royals, a travelling rep baseball team, played two of its home games in Campbell River last week. The Royals won both their games against

Richmond on Sunday at Campbell River’s Nunns Creek Park. The scores were 11-8 and 7-2, which officially put the Royals into sixth place in the BC Premier Baseball League.

Firstly, pay attention to an object or patch of grass just target side of your golf ball. You will try to keep the club low enough after impact with your ball to hit this. In my lessons I lie an object down for my students to hit beyond the ball. Secondly, initiate your down swing from the ground up. That means after completing your back swing, slide your knees and hips towards the target. This shifts your weight, and centre, forward allowing the bottom of the swing arc to be several inches beyond your golf ball. Doing these two things, and visualising the correct strike will improve your ball striking! Good Luck!

Tyees advance to provincials The Campbell River Peewee AA Tyees are going to the big show. With three wins and a second place overall finish in the Island zone tournament last weekend in Duncan, the team qualified for a spot to challenge for the BC Provincial Championship in Mission which began today and wrap up on Sunday. In game one of the Island zone tournament, the Tyees got off to a slow start. They found themselves down 8-0 to Powell River after three innings before they got their bats working and scored seven runs. Unfortunately it was too little, too late, as they fell to their opponents 9-7. Game two had the Tyees facing off against the Comox Cardinals. Robert Gurney and Ethan Millar took care

of the pitching duties, while the rest of the boys supported them with some stellar defence. Millar helped his own effort with a second inning home run over the left field fence as the Tyees went on to win 10-6. Saturday morning the Tyees played the Oceanside Reds. In one of the tightest defensive games of the tournament, the boys from Campbell River came away with their most important win, 5-3. Riley Sutherland got the start on the mound, and was relieved by Laine Rogers and Millar to close out the win. Bryce Idiens was the winning run, as he got himself on base with a great hit to the gap in left-centre field. The Victoria Eagles were the Tyees’ opponent for game four, which saw Campbell

River win by a score of 16-6. After losing starting pitcher Greyer McLain after only five pitches, Austin Gurney took the mound and threw three innings. It was a close contest until the bottom of the fourth, when Laine Rogers burst open the floodgates with a three-run home run over the left field fence. The Tyees continued to rally through the next two innings with great base running, and solid defensive plays by Millar and Austin Gurney to keep the Victoria team off the scoresheet. Sunday’s game was against the undefeated host, Duncan River Cats, for first place. The Tyees played a very

sound defensive game, helping out starting pitcher Cameron Bell, and closer Robert Gurney. Isaac McKenzie made several great plays at second base, but was noticed mostly for his timely bunt on a squeeze play to break the Duncan shutout in the fifth. The Tyees got a small rally going and scored three runs, but it was the River Cats with the 11-3 victory. The Tyees were the only team to not lose by a mercy rule, and the only team that took Duncan to the full seven innings. And it was enough to give the Tyees a spot in the provincials which are now underway.

Since the beginning of summer, the salmon have been concentrated on the south end of Quadra Island and by watching the boats heading out on any given tide, the action at times can be slower than the previous day and the bite can change at any given moment. To the south of Campbell River, Bates Beach and Grants Reef has been a little slower than last year. Anglers know where the bait is and the springs should be around. On my last outing there were a number of whale watching boats heading out and Capt. Gord Dunstan reports a lot of killer whale activity in Discovery Passage and off the south end of Quadra. Many days the whales travel through the boats at the Lighthouse, Hump and Green Can area. There has been regular humpback activity and one whale has been liking the waters near Campbell River.

Some bigger fish have been coming in the last few weeks and many are in the mid to high twenties along with a few Tyees. Those fishing with plugs on both tides are getting into big salmon. The area from the Green Can to Fransisco Point are getting good action on Hoochies and various colored plugs. Reports coming in from local guides in the area – and those who enjoy recreational sport fishing – say that July continues to be strong and a good year continues in the area. In the waters north of Sayward, small waves of schooling pinks have been reported and the action should be improved over the next week or so. Kelsey Bay is slow for pinks and

very few have been caught off the dock. In general, the fishing calendar for the Campbell River area is January to December for Chinook, July to October for coho and August and September for sockeye. Pinks are in small numbers now until September and the chum action is September and October. I received a number of requests for a fly that has been very productive at local lakes in the Campbell River area. Steve Somerset and Darlene Franklin will receive my pheasant-tied pattern and when the weather cools, I will try this pattern on one of the lakes north of Campbell River. Last year I had two fish taken by eagles and this year I saw a local fishing off the dock at Echo Lake and the fish was stolen by the resident eagle.
