B.C. Views: Nestlé protest doesn’t hold water
by Tom Fletcher Have you noticed the latest degradation of standards on TV news? In addition to sensational depictions of crime, accidents and celebrities, the lineup now incorporates any nonsense that is momentarily “viral” on the Internet. So it was with an online petition sin-
gling out Swiss food corporation Nestlé, which operates a water bottling plant near Hope. It’s the largest in B.C., one of many that bottle the province’s water and sell it back to a gullible public. This petition is courtesy of SumOfUs, one of those selfappointed environmental watchdogs that seem to pop up like mushrooms overnight. “Fighting for people over profits,” they claim, pitching for donations. The story has what U.S. comedian Stephen Colbert calls “truthiness.” That’s

when something is false, but it “feels” true. “Nestlé is about to suck B.C. dry – for $2.25 per million litres to be exact,” says the SumOfUs headline. Using her keen sense of what’s superficially popular, Premier Christy Clark instantly called for a review of these low rates for selling the people’s water. It then fell to Environment Minister Mary Polak to explain what’s really going on. “People keep saying there’s a deal with Nestlé,” Polak told reporters. “There isn’t. They pay the same as any other industrial user, in fact the highest industrial rate, and it goes for any-
thing from hydraulic fracturing to bottled water, those involved in mining for example, any of those heavy industrial uses.” And why is that rate so low? It’s because the province takes great pains not to “sell” water, which would make it a commodity under trade agreements, like oil or minerals. That would surrender provincial control, and allow the U.S. to press for equal access to Canadian water. “You’re buying the right to use the water,” Polak said. “I know it sounds crazy to the public, but we call it a rental – a water rental. There’s a reason we use that language, because we are
very careful to avoid any suggestion that by paying this amount, you therefore own that water. “That reserves for us the right at any time, for a compelling public need, to say stop. It doesn’t matter if you have a licence.” As for the brazenly false claim that Nestlé is sucking B.C. dry, I’m indebted to a real environmental professional named Blair King for explaining this. (His blog, achemistinlangley.blogspot. ca, offers useful technical explanations of issues in the news, many of which contradict so-called environmentalists.) King notes that the bottling plant uses less than one per cent

of the flow through Kawkawa Lake: “If Nestlé stopped operating (and put its 75 employees out of work and stopped paying municipal taxes) would there be more water for the rest of us?” he writes. “Absolutely not. Kawkawa Lake drains its excess water into the Fraser River, which drains into the Strait of Georgia. Neither the Fraser River at Hope nor the Strait of Georgia is particularly short of water, even in the driest of years.” Clark made one useful contribution, when asked about this urgent non-issue by those seeking to further sensationalize the current drought and
forest fires. She correctly noted that most B.C. residents have access to the best tap water in the world, and have no need for bottled water. Nestlé, Perrier, Coke, Pepsi and other companies have done a fantastic job of convincing people that their drinking water has to be delivered in bottles from some mythical pure source. Here’s a tip, Nestlé critics: Fill a jug with water and stick it in the fridge. Fight the corporations. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Recent thunderstorms have kept BC Wildfire Service crews busy fighting dozens of new fires in the Southeast Fire Centre. Crews have responded to 52 new fires since Monday, 50 of which were caused by lightning. The Boundary region had 23 new wildfires. The largest covers 25 hectares and is located north of Midway and east of Ingram Creek. This fire is 100% contained and 30 firefighters and four pieces of heavy equipment are working on it today. 10 Neat Things... Rebloomers
1. Off with their Heads. Dead-heading is a specific kind of pruning that works well for many annuals and even some perennials and shrubs. When you remove flowers that have finished their show, you accomplish two things. First, you are telling the plant that it needs to keep blooming if it ever wants to re-seed itself. You also stop the plant from wasting energy on forming seeds, leaving it for more growth and blooms! 2. Return of the Lilac. Lilacs are known for their early season display, but the ‘Bloomerang’ lilac blooms in the spring, goes through a rest period in the heat of summer and fragrant flowers return mid-season and continue right up until frost, turning heads and noses alike. Their blooms are abundant, making this plant ideal for cut flowers. 3. Great Balls of Endless Flower. Many hydrangeas bloom once and are done for the season. But the hydrangea ‘Endless Summer’ bears blossoms on new growth, so you can enjoy the flowers several times each summer. For gardeners in cold climates where winter damage prevents other hydrangeas from flowering, 'Endless Summer' ensures a spectacular show. 4. Vertical Flower Show. Whether your clematis will flower again and again throughout the season depends on the type of plant. Clematis are grouped into three types: Type A that flowers only on growth from last year, Type B that flower on last year’s and the current year’s growth and Type C that bloom only on the current year’s growth. Clematis of Type B and C should rebloom with a bit of care. 5. Let the Sunshine in! Coreopsis, also known as tickseed, produces scores of bright flowers in the summer months. The colour of the blooms range from sunny yellow to golden-yellow, pink or bicolor flowers, depending on the variety. Plucking off spent blooms will prevent seed from forming and keep the plant blooming profusely. 6. Brighten Your Days! The white blooms of shasta daisies can brighten any perennial garden with their cheery display. As soon as you see their flowers begin to fade, wither, or turn brown, either cut the spent blooms with a sharp knife or use pruning shears. This will stimulate new growth and result in additional flowers. 7. Black Eyes not an Accident. They are the sunny faces of midsummer across Canada; rudbeckia, also known as ‘Black-Eyed Susan’ was the Perennial Plant Association's plant of the year in 1999. They have a daisy-like appearance and are great additions to any cut flower arrangement. Another positive side-effect of cutting is that it also promotes reblooming. 8. Exotic Touch for your Garden. The blooms of daylilies resemble the luxurious beauty of true lilies and there are many re-blooming varieties to grace your garden, including ‘Stella d'Oro’ and ‘Janice Brown’. In addition to removing spent blooms and damaged leaves to encourage new buds forming, daylilies appreciate a 2-inch layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture and to prevent weeds from growing and compete with the daylilies for moisture and soil nutrients. 9. Not only Your Cats will Love it. Nepeta, commonly known as catmint, is a popular ornamental plant because it is water conserving, deer are not particularly fond of it and it has a long bloom period from late spring to autumn. Give the plant a haircut after its initial flush of flowers in late spring to keep it compact and initiate another cycle of bloom. 10. Towers of Flowers. Salvia stuns in borders with columns of blooms in shades of purple and blue, sometimes even white and pink and this is a plant that is heat and drought tolerant as well. This plant will rebloom from late spring through the fall season., for best success, cut back old bloom stems immediately.

2016 Honda Pilot What Honda vehicle seats up to eight passengers, has moving-van stowage capacity and comes with a standard V6 engine? Naturally, the Odyssey minivan. But the Honda Pilot is also the right answer. The same-but-different models are about equally versatile, however the Pilot’s key advantage is an available all-wheel-drive system that allows it to go that extra mile when road and/or weather conditions become unpleasant. Honda’s third-generation Pilot, which heads to market this spring, represents a much different design approach. The previous boxy structure that made the Pilot look the part of a proper boulder basher has been supplanted by more mainstream sheetmetal. Following the usual market research due diligence, Honda determined that a softened appearance could earn the Pilot more friends (i.e. women buyers or influencers). That same approach has worked well with the Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder and Chevrolet Traverse, whose utility also caters to family life. That’s not to say that the Pilot is necessarily a copycat. The grille
is definitely all Honda and from the sides and rear the styling is as plain as vanilla, although not in a disagreeable way. The latest Pilot grows about nine centimetres in overall length and about five centimetres between the front and rear wheels, while the roofline is slightly lower for improved aerodynamics. The changes mean a bit more passenger legroom plus slightly more room behind the third-row seat. The rear side door openings make third-row access a bit easier while pushbuttons on the outer edges of the second row bench, or newly optional individual high-back chairs, make them super easy to slide and tilt forward. Getting in and out is about as easy as it can be. There’s a myriad of bins and storage compartments along with enough USB ports (five) plus a 115-volt outlet to satisfy the powerup needs for all aboard. The engine is the latest rendition of Honda’s 3.5-litre V6 that makes 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That’s up from the previous 250/253 rating. The V6 mates to one of two au-

tomatic transmissions depending on which trim level is selected. Base LX, EX and EXL models come with a six-speed unit, while the topend Touring version employs a ninespeed automatic. The differences between the two are almost imperceptible, which is testament to the
smoothness and efficiency of both. All-wheel-drive is optional with LX, but standard with EX, EXL and Touring. Honda says the hardware is about nine kilograms lighter than before and responds more quickly. Unlike most competing systems, the Pilot’s AWD can direct 100 per
cent of the rear torque to the outside wheel while turning, without applying braking force to the inside wheel. The resulting “torque vectoring” creates more corning control/ stability with reduced understeer (the natural tendency for the vehicle to want to travel in a straight line when the steering wheel is turned). AWD-equipped Pilots also have “Intelligent Traction Management” that lets the driver vary torque delivery to the four wheels via Normal, Snow, Mud and Sand terrain settings. Despite the increased dimensions and added power, fuel economy is pegged at 12.4 l/100 km in the city and 8.8 highway for front-wheeldrive six-speed models and 13.0/9.3 with AWD (12.4/9.3 with the ninespeed). Those numbers are slightly better than for the 2015 Pilot, aided by a 136-kilogram weight reduction. Over the road, a combination of less heft, more power, and AWD improvements provide the 1,850-kilogram-plus Pilot with impressive acceleration and a noticeable crispness in the turns, which is a quality that many of its competitors lack. We’re not talking sports car-like by any means — that’s not what this rig is all about — but the Pilot’s sharpness is reassuring. At $37,200 (up to $52,200 for the content-laden Touring AWD) the Pilot’s pricing is little changed over the 2015 model. Virtually everything else has been thoroughly retooled, replaced or refreshed to make the vehicle drive better, load and unload more easily and, therefore, be more popular.
Safety Tip: Dooring is hazardous
To make the third row even remotely usable, the second row has to tilt and slide with ease. The second-row bucket seats are a new feature for 2016, otherwise there’s a three-person centre bench seat. (PHOTO CREDIT, HONDA)

Also, thank you once again for the beautiful hanging baskets downtown, the flower planters along the strip and the attractive planters at the hospital. They all show that we care about our city! Hugs: To Brandy at The Mobile Shop at Superstore. She always goes above and beyond to find you the best deal for your needs. If you looked up ‘Excellent Customer Service’ in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Brandy. Knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. We’ll be back. Hugs: Ongoing hugs to my endlessly kind & thoughtful neighbors Floyd S and his family. For years they have been mowing, trimming, watering,
planting, weeding, raking & shoveling. A truly amazing family. Thank you so much Hugs: Special hugs to Cheryl from Vancouver. My son was dirt biking locally and you saw his wallet fly out of his pocket. You made a special trip to return it to him at our house. Thank you so much! Hugs: Huge hugs to the guys that helped my father out on the Bull river road between 30 & 40 km. You guys Rock!! Thanks for pitching in and getting him and his belongings to his campsite!! Much appreciated!! To see there are some great young people willing to go above and beyond! If anyone ever has trouble and is by themselves you better hope these guys are around! Wishing I could say THANK YOU in person!
cheerfully offered to mail my letter at Walmart. She saved me a long walk in the hot sun. Lovely Canada Day present. Thank You. Hugs: Big hugs to the man at the Canada Day booth offering flags, stickers and pins!! You made a little girl’s day by offering her a flag even though we didn’t have any money for a donation. We will be sure to find you next year to reimburse you!!! Hugs: To the Cranbrook Girls Bugle Band for the great job they did in the Calgary Stampede Parade! You did us all proud! Hugs: Big thanks and congratulations to Connect Cranbrook for another tremendous Canada Day celebration!

As it approaches its 20th anniversary, Columbia Basin Trust is pleased to announce 2014/15 was another year of strong support to the area it serves in the Columbia Basin. Over the year the organization delivered nearly $22 million in programs and services to communities and residents, $17 million in new loans to Basin businesses and earned revenues of over $29 million. The Trust works to strengthen the region’s social, economic and environmental well-being. In 2014/15, activities included establishing a new resource to support sports and physical activity, helping Junior Achievement expand into the Basin so youth can learn about entrepreneurship, renewing the Trust’s Social Strategic Plan and continuing to create a regional open-access broadband network. The main way the Trust supports these activities is by investing in power projects. All power projects performed well over the year, and brought in revenues of over $22 million (out of total revenues of $29 million). In spring 2015 Waneta Expansion began operating, which will positively impact future revenues. The Trust also invests in market securities (stocks and bonds) and local real estate, and provides loans to Basin-based businesses. “Because of the strong performance of our investments, our revenues were higher than anticipated, which means we were able to offer more programs and services to Basin residents,” said Neil Muth, Columbia Basin Trust President and Chief Executive Officer. “Moving into the future, we look forward to having even greater impact on well-being in the region.” A major emphasis over the year involved engaging with residents to ask what’s important to them and how the Trust should focus its efforts. About 3,000 people provided input

More than $44 million to be spent in Kootenay National Park David Wilks, Member of Parliament for Kootenay— Columbia, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today announced infrastructure investments totalling over $44 million in several Parks Canada projects across Kootenay National Park. This major investment includes extensive work on Highway 93 South, repair and rehabilitation work at the Radium Hot Springs site and, emergency flood response work on Kootenay National Park’s bridges, campgrounds and day use areas. “Our Government is committed to renewing visitor facilities which will allow Canadians to connect with our national parks and national historic sites. These projects will enhance the world class offer available in Kootenay National Park, and continue to draw visitors from around the world,” said David Wilks, Member of Parliament for Kootenay—
Columbia. These projects are the result of an unprecedented investment by the Government of Canada to support infrastructure work in our national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas. This investment represents the largest federal infrastructure plan in the 104-year history of Parks Canada, ensuring these cherished places are pro-
tected and secured for the future while also creating and protecting jobs and opportunities. Established in 1920, Kootenay National Park represents the south-western region of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. From glacier-clad peaks along the Continental Divide to the semi-arid grasslands of the Rocky Mountain Trench, where cacti grow, this
park is home to a rich diversity of landscapes and ecology. Radium Hot Springs, located inside Kootenay National Park, is home to Canada’s largest hot springs pool. The mineral water of Radium Hot Springs is uniquely odourless and clear, making this hot springs a highly prized destination for visitors. Kootenay National Park welcomes
approximately 400,000 visitors every year. Last year, more than 21 million visits were made to Canada’s national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas. Parks Canada is present in hundreds of communities across Canada and contributes approximately $3 billion dollars to the Canadian economy every year. Parks Canada’s over-

Province green lights Petronas LNG By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government has passed legislation setting tax rates in a 25-year project devel-
opment deal for what the government hopes is the first of a series of liquefied natural gas export facilities. Premier Christy
Clark invited Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain and Port Edward Mayor Dave MacDonald to the legislature for a brief celebration Tuesday, as debate wound down on a rare summer session of the B.C. legislature.
Brain, a rookie mayor at age 29 and fourth generation Prince Rupert resident, said the prospect of economic recovery is welcome for the struggling community of 14,500 people. “When I was in high school we lost three
major industries all at the same time in our town,” Brain said. “We lost our forest industry, our fishing industry and our mill. I lost a lot of friends, we lost half our population and ever since it’s been a struggle for our community to get back on PHOTO BC GOVERNMENT

Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain speaks at B.C. legislature. track.” Clark said the project development agreement with Petronasled Pacific Northwest LNG for the Port of Prince Rupert is complete from the government’s standpoint. She ruled out any further exemptions to the provincial sales tax that applies to investments in plant and pipelines that could reach $36 billion. “We aren’t considering changing the way the PST is treated for this or any other projects,” Clark said, responding to comments by David Keane, president of the B.C. LNG Alliance. Keane questioned the suggestion that LNG investors are getting a discount for investing in B.C. “This is the only regime where we have to pay a special LNG tax,” Keane told reporters in Victoria last week. “It’s the only jurisdiction where we have to pay a carbon tax, and we also have to buy carbon offsets to get down to our greenhouse gas target that was legislated last year. “And in addition to that, we’re also going to be paying PST, GST, payroll taxes, municipal taxes, and corporate income taxes at both the federal and provincial levels.” Pacific Northwest still needs an environmental permit from the federal government, and approval from the Lax Kw’alaams Band, whose territory includes the Lelu Island site chosen for the LNG shipping terminal. Opposition MLAs opposed the agreement, citing a lack of job guarantees and protection for the investors from discriminatory tax and regulation changes for 25 years.

MP David Wilks. 2011. We’ll focus in on what we did right in 2011 and we’ll come out with our platform when our team is closer to the rip,” he added.
In March 2015 Wilks noted that improvements to the TransCanada Highway are essential, and an important project he has been working towards. “It continues to be the main focus,” he stressed. “I’ve been able to get a significant amount of money for the highway in the last four years and I will continue to move forward [with that project].” Wilks experience includes his recent years as MP in addition to 20 years working in the public service sector, including

working with the RCMP and holding the position of mayor for the District of Sparwood. The MP has recently travelled throughout the riding and plans to visit such communities as Creston, Nelson, Kaslo, Golden, Kimberley and Yahk in upcoming weeks to speak with his constituents. “My staff and I are doing a tremendous job at resolving issues from constituents around the riding,” Wilks said, adding. “I’ve met with constituents here [in the Elk Valley] with a variety of issues.” The candidate has also said he has been working closely with Regional District of the East Kootenay Area A Director Mike Sosnowski to address issues within the region.

run for the 2015 federal election in mid-March, Green has been travelling throughout the riding to introduce himself to his constituents and discuss the Green Party’s platform. “I think people enjoy meeting candidates and to see them face-to-face, they get a picture of what they look like,” Green said about why he elects to go door knocking in communities across the riding. “We’ve been actively campaigning and I’m happy with the progress we’re making. Overall, we’re really encouraged with the feedback we’re getting.” Green’s main focus as KootenayColumbia MP candidate is to build a green, resilient economy — an economy that begins with our future generation. “How do we create jobs in our smaller communities so that our children who want to can continue to live and work in these areas?” the candidate questioned. “That’s a big challenge in a lot of communities.” The Green Party candidate also expressed concerns in regards to the country’s current health care system, asking, “How do we support and move towards and encourage people to live healthier and active lifestyles?” It is these, among other questions, that Green hopes to address if he is elected as MP in the riding. In addition, Green has been discussing First Nation reconsolidation with the public in recent months, with the goal of reinventing Canada by working with the First Nations people. “I’m really surprised and impressed that a lot of people want to talk to me about that in a very positive way,” Green admitted. The MP candidates future campaign efforts including visiting Fernie in early August and taking part in the annual Wapiti Music Festival.

Don Johnston. by Katelyn Dingman - The Free Press Growing up in the Kootenays, Liberal candidate Don Johnston wants to serve his constituents as MP. The former Nelson LV Rogers Senior Secondary student announced he would be running for MP in early June after working in community development within Canada and internationally for 40 years. Johnston has spent the last 12 years employed at the president/CEO level for various companies, which includes six years as CEO for the Columbia Basin Trust. “I know the riding as much as it’s possible to know the riding,” Johnston said of his experience, adding, “Part of the message that’s going to be a really strong element of our campaign is that we need to think about electing someone who understands the role of MP to do a very good job of representing the wishes of the constituents in Ottawa.” He went on to say, “With the current government, because
everything is so centrally controlled, it’s really not possible for the MP to do a very good job of representing the wishes of the constituents in Ottawa.” Johnston said that he plans to be a powerful voice in Ottawa — one that can properly represent the concerns of his constituents, including rural

Today, his stance remains the same. “The number one thing that I hear from people going door-
to-door is that the Harper Conservative government has to go, that’s the number one comment,” noted Stetski. “This election, more than any other that I’ve seen in my lifetime, is about Canada and our Canadian values that quite frankly have been under attack by the Harper Conservative government.” In recent months Stetski has been launching his campaign in various communities around the Kootenay-Columbia riding, including
Fernie, where he kicked off his campaign on the evening of June 16. Stetski highlighted the importance of introducing himself to the public and discussing important issues with them, including the introduction of a small business tax cut, which would reduce the tax rate from 11 per cent to nine per cent and the $15 a day national daycare plan the NDP party has proposed. “A lot of families are struggling with daycare costs,”
Stetski explained. “It’s important that people know that I care. Showing up in the community and inviting people to come for a meet and greet and then going door-to-door to find out what their concerns are and to provide an opportunity for us to meet faceto-face, basically for me, it shows respect, it shows that I care and it shows that I very much want to be their Member of Parliament.” Stetski said he believes his experience serving the public will
allow him to flourish if he is elected as Kootenay-Columbia’s MP. The NDP candidate served as Cranbrook mayor from 2011 to 2014 in addition to formerly holding the position of Kootenay Regional Manager for the British Columbia Ministry of Environment. “I really like people,” Stetski admitted. “I like to be able to represent their interests in a strong way.”
concerns. “Rural issues are kind of falling off the table,” Johnston said, adding that gaining access to education without having to leave home and issues with regards to local infrastructure are two of the main areas Johnston would like to focus on if he is elected as MP for the Kootenay-Columbia riding. “It’s really important to have a strong voice that understands those issues,” Johnston added.
Thus far, Johnston has visited several communities throughout the riding and he said he plans to connect with as many people as possible between now and Oct.13. “We will be doing door knocking in every large community in the riding and we’ll be doing phone calling too,” Johnston said, adding, “There’s an awful lot of empirical evidence that face to face meetings are about the only thing that actually ever
changes anybody’s idea on who they’re going to vote for.” If elected as MP, Johnston said he plans to hold annual accountability ses-
sions throughout the riding where he would review what has been working and what needs to be addressed in the future with his constituents.
“I think it just creates a little bit more effective relationship between promises and delivery because you will be held accountable,” Johnston said.

On Sunday, August 2, 2015, Fort Steele Heritage Town is thrilled to be welcoming Lord Strathcona’s Musical Ride to our park to bring their entertaining mounted demonstration to the East Kootenays. Lord Strathcona’s Mounted Troop is an authorized volunteer display unit, reminiscent of Lord Strathcona’s Horse in the 1920’s and 30’s. The 20-horse, 25-member Troop performs the Musical Ride and Tent
Pegging demonstration which draws from the Regiment’s earliest traditions. In addition to the Musical Ride, we are pleased to welcome, Cranbrook’s own, “The Good Ol’ Goats” who will bring their popular folk-rock sound to Fort Steele Heritage Town once again. The 6 piece alternative folk band played one of their earliest gigs on the streets of Fort Steele and are taking time from their current Western
Canadian Tour to help us celebrate BC Day Weekend. There will also be displays featuring the Sam Steele Scouts, The Back Country Horsemen and The North West Mounted Police. As if that wasn’t enough, the evening will culminate with a fireworks display (if the weather cooperates). The event starts at 6pm and tickets for this event are $25 (taxes included) and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are available at The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce, Cranbrook Safeway or by calling Fort
Steele at 250 417 6000. Fort Steele Heritage Town is a living history museum dedicated to the preservation, education and interpretation of the pioneer mining town during the late 1800’s. The Friends of Fort Steele Society is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to continuing conservation initiatives, building community partnerships, developing a sustainable funding model and providing the nearly 80,000 annual visitors with an experience that truly enables them to visualize a day in the life of Fort Steele in its heyday.

John Walter MacKenzie 1932 – 2015 John Walter MacKenzie (Mawk) was born on July 12, 1932 in Kimberley, BC to Catherine and Walter and was the youngest of 8 children. At 83, he passed away peacefully on July 19, 2015 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. John is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Paul, many nieces and nephews and by his 2 special sisters in law, Connie MacKenzie and Patricia Hargrave and their families. His father Walter, mother Catherine, brothers Duncan, Ian, Gordon and Sisters Anna, Doris, Verna and Ruth predecease him. John and Marilyn (Kozak) were married in 1962 and welcomed the birth of their only son Paul, 5 years later. John was a very active sportsman, which led him into his love of sports. John participated in many sports including soccer, boxing, bowling, curling, baseball and he excelled in all that he partook. As a 20 year old in 1952 he participated as a boxer in the Golden Gloves. Later in life, he was a member on a men’s curling team and succeeded in winning the East Kootenay zone championships 12 times. John loved baseball, more so the Brooklyn and then the Los Angeles Dodgers. John spent many happy summers at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and as recently as 2 summers ago with his son Paul. In his younger days he was the manager and coach of the BPOE Angels Baseball team and only wore the Angels cap during games, afterwards, quickly switching back to his beloved Dodgers cap. Being a good Scotchman, John played the drums with the Kimberley Pipe Band for many years. He was also an avid fan of the Kimberley Dynamiters and served on the executive when the Dynamiters won the Allen Cup in 1978. Prior to his retirement in 1993 John worked at the City of Kimberley as the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation. During his Tenure, he was known for his ice making skills in the Civic Center and the well-maintained condition of the local parks, ball fields and cemetery. John volunteered in many local organizations, some of these from their conception, including the Bavarian Society, the Festivals, both JulyFest and WinterFest, and the creation and administration of the Bocce pits. John was one of the founders of the Kimberley Sullivan Mine Underground Railroad and spent many seasons volunteering wherever he was needed. A 60 plus year member of the Kimberley Elks Club, John enjoyed serving on the executive and executing administrational duties until 2013. John loved his family and friends. He loved to attend Dodger baseball in Los Angeles, relax in Hawaii and to work in his yard in Kimberley. Words cannot express the impact he has had on our lives and he will be dearly missed. A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at the Kimberley Cemetery for family and friends on Saturday July 25, 2015 at 1:00 pm, followed by a celebration of John’s life at 2:00 pm at the Kimberley Elks Club. In lieu for flowers please make donations to the Sullivan Mine and Railway Society (SM&R) Box 94, Kimberley, BC V1A 2Y5. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.
