TERRACE - A huge new mobile training unit has been introduced in the northwest, capable of bringing skills training anywhere a semi-trailer truck can drive, according to instructors who were on hand at Northwest Community College today for the grand unveiling. Officials from Northwest Community College said the investment will enable people in remote areas to access training closer to their families and offer an opportunity for First Nations who may face obstacles because of their distance from central towns. And for the province of B.C. as a whole, the government says the trailer is part of a larger program to prepare for a shortfall of labour expected in coming years.

“We’re expecting one million job openings in the next seven years in British Columbia, about two-thirds of that will be due to retirements,” said Minister of Advanced Education Andrew Wilkinson, who attended the unveiling. “About 15 per cent of that one million will be in trades. That’s 150,000 trades people we are looking for in the next seven years.” The training trailer expands electronically into a 1,000 square foot room designed to help educate about 100 people a year, and possibly more depending on which programs it is used for. The various trades it is designed to accommodate include carpentry, piping, welding, plumbing, hairstyling and electrical. The provincial government’s contribution to the trades train-

ing trailer is $598,500 of the total investment $2.7 million for the trailer and the programming to run it, while the trailer itself is worth about $1 million. A planned liquified natural gas industry was also a big impetus behind the investment, with LNG Canada contributing $200,000 and pipeline company TransCanada contributing $75,000. “Before we make a final investment decision on this project you will see more than a million dollars just in training,” said Susannah Pierce, director of external affairs for LNG Canada, one of several companies still waiting to finalize plans for liquified natural gas plants in Kitimat. Rebecca McElhoes, manager of community relations for TransCanada’s two natural gas pipelines planned for the region, one that would feed the LNG

Canada project, said that “Our proposed BC projects would require thousands of skilled workers for the construction phase, if we reach a final investment decision.” The new trades training trailer has a metal interior with shiny anti-slip flooring. Inside is a satellite video conferencing module and power system that can run on an internal diesel generator. While it is capable of going to remote communities, it will also be used in larger centres such as Kitimat, said NWCC director of communications Sarah Zimmerman. Zimmerman added that programming provided by the Industrial Training Authority (ITA) represents about $300,000 of the total investment, and that another major donor who contributed will be named soon.

City of Terrace reformats TEDA By Josh Massey

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - The City of Terrace says it will work together with the Terrace & District Chamber of Commerce to reformat the municipality’s economic development program following council’s vote to terminate its contract with the Terrace Economic Development Authority (TEDA). Council’s decision at the July 13 regular council meeting to terminate the $165,000 contract with TEDA is effective Sept. 30 and came about after a close vote held in camera. Created in 1999, TEDA has employed both an economic development officer and front end staffer to perform various functions related to attracting and facilitating commerce in the city and area. Councillors Stacey Tyers, Michael Prevost, James Cordeiro and Mayor Carol Leclerc voted in favour of closing up the organization, while councillors Lynne Christiansen, Brian Downie and Sean Bujtas voted against the motion. According to TEDA board chair Rob Dykeman, the city’s new plan to combine the role of TEDA’s economic development officer with the internal city position of corporate lands manager might be an attempt at increased efficiency on the city’s part, but that something will be lost in translation. Remaining an armslength organization, Dykeman argues, would have allowed for TEDA to continue its tradition of “dialog with businesses so they can have a non-biased, non-political viewpoint on their business or their business opportunities.” Now that the economic development officer position will be in-house, Dykeman said that healthy distancing will be compromised. And while the city could save money by combining the positions and boost community grant spending which used to pay for TEDA, Dykeman remains concerned. “That money paid for wages and marketing and promotion of Terrace, I feel it was money well spent,” he said. In a press release last week, Leclerc argued that shuttering TEDA and making its mandate one internal to the city will “also improve the free flow of information between city departments related to economic development, and provide the business community and investors with a direct line to the city and council.”

A new, internal economic development officer position will be created to fill the old external economic development officer role with the added duties of the corporate lands manager position, Leclerc explained. The corporate lands manager position was created several years ago and was held by city official Herb Dusdal until he quit this winter to take a private sector job with local construction company Nechako Northcoast. His main role at the city was managing the city’s real estate portfolio, with the central piece being the Skeena Industrial Development Park.

The city’s decision to end TEDA leaves a number of duties to be divided between the city and the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce who also plans to get involved. Avison said $50,000 of the $165,000 budgeted for TEDA came from the Northern Development Initiative Trust. And chamber president Val Gauvin said her organization will be involved in hosting trade shows and putting together the ad-dollar driven Industrial Resources Service Directory. Profit from this print and online directory, including some already saved by TEDA, Gauvin says should be used for

the chamber’s new venture, something she plans to include in a forthcoming proposal to be submitted to the city. “Within that proposal we will be putting in that the chamber will take on the numerous duties that TEDA did that the city can’t really do,” she said. She added that the proposal will include keeping the front end position and “moving the chamber into the TEDA building,” which TEDA is currently leasing. The new organization could be called the Terrace Business Resource Centre, and would exist as an operational department within the chamber’s structure, she added.

Prince Rupert Airport master plan in the works !Paul Morgan Playing Live! By Kevin Campbell

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - It might soon be possible to step off an inbound airplane from Calgary at Prince Rupert Airport and, minutes later, hop on a seaplane to reach Haida Gwaii. That’s just one of many scenarios that the City of Prince Rupert’s ambitious Airport Master Plan would enable through creating one linked transportation hub. Plans for a comprehensive revamp of the entire Digby Island airport site were revealed earlier this month when Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain offered details on the new plan, which is being developed in part with the provincial and federal governments and WSP Canada, the contractor awarded with developing the mapping and logistics of the plan. While a funding model has not been developed and is largely predicated on the final investment decisions of a number of industrial projects planned for the Prince Rupert area, chiefly in the LNG industry, the plan would address a plethora of issues at the current airport. The 20-year forecast includes looking at things such as runway length, taxiways, apron, air terminal buildings for restaurants and businesses, hangars, seaplane water landing strips, helicopter landing pads, vehicle parking, air navigation facilities, utilities and services, airport maintenance hangars, fire support, a cargo business centre, noise management, environmental planning, airport security and airport access. “In the immediate [term] we need to have the plan done basically by late fall,

so in the fourth quarter. It’s an aggressive timeline. Usually you get more time to do master plans, but this is all depending on if LNG goes through, then we would have to get that sorted out a lot sooner than later,” said Mayor Brain last week, adding that actual construction of the site wouldn’t begin until later in 2016 should a funding model be approved. Streamlining a more frequent ferry schedule for more frequent flights is one of the items on the plan and it’s part of a longer-term access point proposal. “One of the things the province is working on now ... is building road connectivity to Digby Island, but also around up towards Lax Kw’alaams and across to Metlakatla with a bridge to the airport. That’s something that’s a ... longer term vision, [but] in the immediate, the master plan is basically going to address how frequently the ferries are going to have to come. “If we get more flights per day ... we’re going to need a ferry that can come to and from Rupert on a very regular schedule. So, rather than people waiting for a bus, they can drive on a ferry themselves or walk on – kind of how the Ketchikan system works ... I envision something like every 30 minutes or every hour, a ferry is coming back and forth, but that’s something for the master plan to figure out,” said Brain. “We want to be able to enable business at the airport too. So, right now it’s really hard for a business to operate at the airport because there’s only two ferries per day and there’s only two amounts of traffic per day, whereas if there was a regular flight schedule and a regular ferry system going on, then business would be more viable.”

Hospice Society wants Developer outlines Port Ed plans you to be end-of-life ready By Shaun Thomas

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert and District Hospice Society is hoping to get the majority of people on the North Coast prepared to deal with their end-of-life care. Hospice society president Judy Riddell and member Louisa Sanchez were in Port Edward on July 14 to outline the group’s 75-20 initiative, with the goal being to have 75 per cent of the population prepared with an endof-life plan by the year 2020. “It means that you get the type of care that you would like at the end of your life if you are not able to communicate yourself because of an accident or a medical condition. It also means that your family and loved ones know what your desires are and it is much better to have spoken about it before you are in a hospital in a crisis situation. It also means that our medical system can best take care of people – they have a protocol they will follow because they are interested in people and what they want,” said Riddell. “A lot of resources are invested during the last few months of people’s lives and perhaps that is not necessary. The baby-boomer population is aging and over the next 20 years we will be putting a lot of demand on our already

stretched healthcare system and that is why it is important to look at being end-of-life prepared.” Sanchez said having a plan for end-of-life care is important not only for the person facing death, but for their loved ones as well. “Make sure you get your family together and get this done because I have seen too many times where families fight about this care,” she said. “When you have this, there is no way anyone can change your plan because it was made when you were of sound mind. We are trying to get everyone to have this done before it gets to a point of dementia as an issue.” To help people create a plan, the hospice society has partnered with Northern Health on a project entitled My Voice, which includes a booklet to walk people through all planning that may be required. “It has been researched and designed by the Ministry of Health in British Columbia and many other provinces have a version of this. We have started by doing training for our volunteers and we will be hosting workshops in the fall at the Seniors Centre to help seniors prepare,” said Riddell, noting the booklet includes working through medical, financial, legal and social considerations.

PORT EDWARD - The company planning to build a new subdivision in Port Edward cleared its first hurdle on Tuesday night as council passed the first and second reading of a bylaw to rezone a large parcel of land from single family residential to multi-family residential. But before construction starts on the land located behind current housing on Evergreen Drive, Alture Properties executive vice-president Stephen Duke recognizes there is still much work to be done. “This is first and second reading, so we still have an open house that is being planned for Aug. 10, though that is subject to change. That is when we will provide some additional details about what it is we are wanting to build,” he said following the meeting. “Once we get the rezoning we get the chance to finish off the plan in terms of how many bedrooms, what the parking will be like and that type of stuff. That then goes into another submission for a development permit, which would go through the same process as the rezoning.” Alture plans to build either

This is a sample image and is subject to change. townhouse and/or condominiums on the land, but work is still underway to determine exactly what that will look like in terms of population and density. “How many are going to be there, I don’t know yet. We’re afforded a number of units based

on the acreage and that actually allows us to build quite a few units,” he said, noting the area could create great opportunity for residents. “The topography of the property rises to the back, so some will have a very nice view.”

Camp aimed to stop LNG work By Flavio Nienow

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

SMITHERS - At an all clans meeting, Wet’suwet’en clans voted to not accept any pipelines through Wet’suwet’en lands, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline projects. In December 2014, Wet’suwet’en First Nation (WFN) signed an agreement with the province for the proposed Coastal GasLink pipeline project. Coastal GasLink Pipeline Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of TransCanada PipeLines Limited, proposes to develop a natural gas pipeline from near Dawson Creek, to the proposed LNG Canada liquefied natural gas export facility in Kitimat. One day after the all clans meeting, LNG Canada received an environmental assessment certificate to proceed with construction of their plant in Kitimat. Hereditary Chief John Ridsdale (Na’Moks), who attended the meeting via teleconference, said the position of the hereditary chiefs hasn’t changed. “There are elected bands and councils that have supported it [construction of pipelines], but as a nation, as hereditary chiefs and clans and house groups, we never have supported this. It’s a re-affirmation of each of the five clans,” said Ridsdale. A camp set up by the Unist’ot’en house group is currently trying to block efforts by TransCanada to do work on the Coastal Gaslink pipeline project. A new You Tube video was recently posted by supporters of the Unist’ot’en camp showing a Unist’ot’en member asking a third party contractor to leave their territory. “This is technically trespassing,” says the Unist’ot’en member in the video. “We’ve asked nicely and people keep coming; this is very disrespectful.”

“This continues to be our territory,” she continues. “We haven’t lost it to war, so you’re not coming through here; you need consent to be here.” According to Unist’ot’en members, throughout May and June, TransCanada has made repeated attempts to survey the area. “The Unist’ot’en, they’re looking after their territory,” said Ridsdale. “And we believe, at this current time, they’re doing the proper thing; they are evicting trespassers, which would be these pipeline companies.” Despite opposition from Wet’suwet’en clans, Chief Karen Ogen said her government will continue supporting LNG projects. “We are fully committed to protecting the environment while pursuing economic opportunities that will provide sustainability to our community. “We remain opposed to oil and bitumen projects because they could have serious environmental impact on our territories and our traditional hunting grounds,” she said. “By signing agreements in support of LNG projects, we have ensured the inclusion of a clause which states at no time with this pipeline agreement, even if sold to another company, be converted to transporting oil or bitumen.” “We have signed agreements with the province with the explicit understanding that the environmental assessment process has to ensure the best practices in the world. Our community members mandated us to engage with gas pipeline companies and make sure that the highest environmental standards are met. By participating in these projects and engaging with the government and proponents, WFN is able to extend a positive influence on their development,” she said. “Our door is always open for dialog...to explain our position,” she added.

Ombudsperson to review firings By Tom Fletcher

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

VICTORIA - B.C.’s new Ombudsperson has been given extra authority to investigate the case of eight ministry of health researchers whose work on drug effectiveness was terminated three years ago. The B.C. government passed amendments Tuesday to allow Ombudsperson Jay Chalke to review the case that has had the government on the defensive since the abrupt dismissal of university researchers in 2012. The researchers were assessing drugs for eligibility under the province’s Pharmacare program. The health ministry initially said a confidential database of

B.C. patients who had taken various drugs had been misused, and some of the researchers appeared to have conflicts of interest. One fired contractor committed suicide, another is suing the government for wrongful dismissal and the remainder have been paid confidential settlements and reinstated. The government has since apologized for the way the contractors were treated, but reasons for the firings and why they were reversed have not been made clear. Chalke, a former public trustee appointed Ombudsperson this spring, said he would take the case if confidentiality agreements didn’t prevent him from reviewing documents and getting an-

swers from those involved. Attorney General Suzanne Anton presented changes to the Ombudsperson Act to exempt the office from confidentiality agreements for this case, and the changes passed the legislature with unanimous consent in under an hour Tuesday. After an independent labour lawyer’s review was unable to compel testimony from senior health ministry officials, Premier Christy Clark rejected opposition calls for an independent inquiry. Health Minister Terry Lake referred the issue to the Ombudsperson, and NDP critics agreed to the move after changes were made to give Chalke the authority he needs.

Lax Kw’alaams to Intervene in Gitga’at LNG Litigation Lax Kw’alaams Mayor, Garry Reece, announced today that the Lax Kw’alaams First Nation will be intervening in the litigation filed by Gitga’at First Nation against the Province and Pacific Northwest LNG Limited Partnership (B.C. Supreme Court Action No. 15-2553, Victoria Registry). The Petition brought by Gitga’at wrongfully claims a “long history of use and occupation of the Prince Rupert area” and aboriginal rights to harvest land and sea resources in the Prince Rupert area. The Gitga’at are seeking an order from the Court requiring the Crown to negotiate compensation with them for the Prince Rupert LNG project by PNW. “The Gitga’at First Nation have been our respected Tsimshian neighbours to the south for millenia, but their traditional territory is at Hartley Bay along the Douglas Channel, well south of the Skeena - they have never previously made any claims to Prince Rupert. Unfortunately, their desire for a cash grab from the Province and LNG companies has led them to disrespect our aboriginal rights and title and we must intervene to make sure the Court has the full facts. Prince Rupert Harbour is the exclusive territory of the nine Allied Tribes.” Contact: Mayor Garry Reece Tel: 250-625-3293 Fax: 250-625-3246

Terrace to welcome new doctors THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

There are four general practitioners who are interested in retiring if and when we find replacements for them Appleton Dr. Natasha De Sousa, a family physician, have confirmed with Northern Health that they plan to relocate to Terrace later this year or early next year. According to Northern Health, they are still struggling to fill the positions of specialist doctors. Urologist Dr. Francis Osie-Tutu retired this summer and Dr. Leilani Therese Almas retired from her gynecology position earlier this year and now works solely as a general practitioner.

lia, and the U.S.A. and all other foreign doctors must pass a screening program in order to practice in Canada. The Practice Readiness Assessment Program is still in its pilot phase, but requires the doctors to sign a contract to practice in a rural community in B.C. for three years. “We are really behind in this province actually,” remarked Appleton explaining that most other provinces have had these programs for years. All of B.C.’s foreign doctors have originally moved to another province on a contract before they were able to move to practice in rural BC. Appleton said that this should change starting with Dr. Mohammad who is currently in the program. “In a nutshell, I am optimistic for general practice here in Terrace,” he said.

Neither vacancy has been filled yet, and the community will still rely on the expertise of the retired specialists. According to Northern Health the retired urologist and gynecologist will still be on hand in case of emergency. Dr. Almas remains on-call with the prenatal clinic and three general practitioners in Terrace overseeing high risk. There is one candidate for taking over the urologist’s practice who intends to come for a site visit in August. Despite the surge of family doctors coming into the community, Terrace numbers still aren’t where Northern Health would like them to be, said Appleton. “There are four general practitioners who are interested in retiring if and when we find replacements for them,” he noted. To solve this problem, Northern Health is looking ahead at a new program called the Practice Readiness Assessment Program which brings foreign doctors into the province. The program is new to B.C. and the first cohort began its 12-week program in various northern communities last May. Currently, B.C. only accepts physicians from Britain, Ireland, Austra-

TERRACE - Residents who may have lost their family doctor will be happy to know that three new doctors and a surgeon are slated to begin arriving here next month. This will bring the total number of family physicians up to 13 and Northern Health also says that a new general surgeon is on his way later this year as well. The first new doctor, Dr. Cesar Lacsamana, is a graduate of the Saint Paul’s residency program in Vancouver and will practice in Terrace on a two-year contract that begins just after the August long weekend. This is the first new doctor to start in Terrace since the departure of Dr. Nanette Fourie last March. “We’re looking forward to having Dr. Lacsamana start here,” said Dr. Geoffrey Appleton who is the local medical director for Northern Health. A new pilot program is also aiming to settle a new foreign doctor from South Africa in Terrace on a three-year contract in September, however, the candidate has yet to graduate. Dr. Ali Mohammad is currently placed in Prince Rupert pend-

ing his start date in Terrace and will take over Dr. Appleton’s part-time practice when he retires this fall. Another two doctors – Dr. Aniedi Dear, a general surgeon, and

Property sales drop in Kitimat By Cameron Orr

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - The B.C. Northern Real Estate Board has released their latest home sales statistics which now cover the first six months of the year. And it would seem Kitimat’s housing bubble, for now, has burst. Kitimat reports 40 properties selling worth $11 million dollars through the first half of this year. In the same time frame last year it was

94 properties worth $26 million. Out of that is 25 single-family homes. Half of that 25 sold for less than $310,000, and took an average of 96 days to sell. By the end of June there were 102 properties of all types for sale in Kitimat. Overall for the entire area covered by the BC NREB, 2,376 properties were sold, down from 2,637 in 2014. That represents $601 million, versus $672 million last year. “The BC Northern Real Estate Board reflects all of the economic realities associated with the significant drop in oil pric-

es,” said BCNREB President David Black. (Unrelated to the David Black from page one.) “The communities that heavily depend on the oil and gas industries are experiencing some drops in volume; however they have been very strong markets in the past and will rebound. Those communities expecting to benefit the most from LNG had a great year in 2014 and have now returned to traditional volumes but at higher values. They will now have to wait for the beginning of one of these projects to actually realize the projected benefits.”

Gay pride rainbow crosswalk to be painted in Terrace By Josh Massey

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - Terrace is a city already blessed with tremendous naturally occurring rainbows that come from the sky, so having one painted across the street as city council decided to do last night might be a natural fit. The city voted last night to paint a rainbow crosswalk somewhere downtown in order to show its support of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transsexual (LGBT) community. Local resident Sarah Artis had

sent a letter requesting that such a crosswalk be installed, saying she was inspired by the same project recently OK’d in Prince Rupert. Artis says these public displays acknowledge the “often underrepresented members of our community.” Council was unanimous in their support, however, the location of the colourful painted sidewalk is still up in the air. One suggestion was a rainbow sidewalk spread from the Elephant’s Ear Bistro running across the street to the Xander’s Cof-

fee side on Lakelse Ave. Another is across from Dairy Queen to the Baker Extraordinaire side on Park Ave. And yet another location for the coloured crossing would be between Mark’s Work Warehouse and Bear Country Inn on Lakelse. “There were some very interesting comments by council made about that today,” said Leclerc after the meeting. “It’s an ask that we can do. It will be interesting as we move forward to see if it’s a huge cost to keep this up if it fades away each

year. You certainly don’t want to put down a rainbow crosswalk and then find out that it’s going to be an expensive thing to keep replacing each year.” Councillor Brian Downie called the move a step towards inclusivity said but that “the issue of diversity is bigger than a sidewalk.” He added that broadening acceptance should be a community-led, rather than a municipally guided function. Like all other councillors, Lynne Christiansen voted in favour of the crosswalk but said that she

worries about precedence for other groups wanting special projects covered by the city. Council estimates the crosswalk would cost about $1,800 to install, but a firmer estimate is expected soon. A regular crosswalk costs about $500 to do. City staff will come back to council at a future meeting with a recommendation as to where and when the crosswalk should be painted. The Village of Masset on Haida Gwaii has also decided to paint such a crosswalk in support of two-spirited people.

Contractor admits ‘Men Working’ sign discriminates By Cecile Favron

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - If you have driven down Sparks or Eby recently you have probably seen the signs rerouting you around the construction on the 4700 block of Walsh, but have you been offended by them? The contracting company who was hired by the city to do the work admits that some of its signs discriminate against female employees. “We never even thought about it until after they were up,” explained Darren Bjorgaard, the site superintendent from Bear

Creek Contracting. He concedes that the four “Men Working” signs facing both lanes of traffic on Sparks and Eby are sexist and promises that future signs will not use the word ‘men’. “We did think about it afterthe-fact and next time we will write something different,” said Bjorgaard. “We will write ‘people working’ or ‘construction workers working’ or maybe even ‘civil engineers working.’” However, he says the company did not think it would be a problem to keep the signs up and there are no plans to change the

words on them for this project. There is one female construction worker on the site for Bear Creek and Bjorgaard describes the worker, Sarah Marchand, as a great employee. He says that in future, signs will not discriminate against her. “She’s awesome, she’s the hardest worker we have,” he noted. Construction on the block was initiated by the city this year to fix the stretch of road that was marked by potholes and a badly broken surface. Civil engineers are currently working on installing new pipes under the street.

TERRACE - There’s an allure to the idea of Dragonboating—20 paddlers prying the surf in a 50-foot boat fitted with a dragon’s head and tale. Call it exotic, primal, or just plain wild— what everybody needs to know is that the Lakelse Dragonboat Society is inviting the public out to give it a try on Aug. 5 in celebration of Riverboat Days. According to organizer Pam Bibby, the sport originated in China and was popularized during Expo ‘86 when demonstrations titillated a national audience, and later still when the sport was used for a breast cancer recovery program. Bibby says everyone is invited to the Riverboat Days event. “It’s great exercise, it’s lots of fun, it’s a team sport. You don’t have to be super athletic,” she said. “It’s really a team sport and because everyone is essentially doing the same thing, there’s no superstars because we are all paddling, it is a true team sport that way.” The boat itself has a 20 rower capacity along with steers person at the back and a coach who sits at the front. “You should expect to get wet. Even when it’s really calm. Because there is a little bit of splashing involved when we are on the water” she said. “The hardest part is the whole team working together and watching the ‘strokes’ who set the pace. The hardest thing for people to learn is to not look at their own paddle, but to keep their head up and look at the strokes so

they can stay in time with everybody.” “That’s why we get wait,” she says of the learning experience. If people like the sport they can even become a member of the club and do the twice weekly paddles as well as compete in the annual race. People familiar with the art of canoe paddling will feel at home because the paddle is similar. Though the stroke itself is more forward-and-back compared to the out-in of the canoe stroke. \ “It’s like a very long canoe. We do have a detachable dragon head and tail that goes on it,” said Bibby. “We have asked Kitimat to borrow it again. We are putting a float in the riverboat days parade as well. We are going to be towing the boat at the parade.” “A little bit of wind and chop doesn’t stop us,” she added of the paddle a the lake. “Everybody is paddling at the same time. It looks pretty impressive when you see everybody doing it the right way.” And the speed at which they travel is one of the most impressive aspects. In the annual race the boats will paddle 250 metres in about a minute and a half. Experience isn’t necessary and almost all ages and all skill levels are welcome and encouraged. And if you can’t make the event, get in touch with the team, they’re happy to take out new recruits or host team building events for groups or workplaces.

Captain and Queen honoured to be chosen for the roles By Margaret Speirs THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - Riverboat Days Captain and Queen Ron and Mavis Ramsay will take time off their busy schedule of running the charity they began, Helping Hands, to take on their new roles during the 10-day event. “It’s a great honour to be chosen. It’s something we never expected to do,” said Mavis, adding it was the Terrace Community Foundation who asked them to be Captain and Queen. The couple has lived here on and off for years and been back here permanently since 1996. They spent years before that back to 1972 living here or in Hinton, Alberta, going back there for the last time when Ron’s dad had lung cancer. Here in town, Ron worked for McGill and Gibbs, a shingle mill in a variety of positions and had a fishing business while Mavis worked as a relief cook for a logging camp for Lloyd Hall and spent three years cooking and cleaning at a fishing lodge. “It was lots of work and didn’t hurt me any,” said Mavis. In Hinton, both worked for forestry and deactivated forestry roads. The couple started Helping Hands several years ago to help raise money for seniors needing money to afford their prescription medication and to help send those in need of medical treatment to Vancouver. They raise money by recycling donated cans and bottles and metal scraps too. Last year, they raised close to $40,000

Ron and Mavis Ramsay, who run the Helping Hands charity, are this year’s Riverboat Days Captain and Queen. and are aiming for $50,000 for this year’s goal. Last week, they hadn’t decided on their Riverboat Days outfits besides Ron’s captain’s hat and Mavis’s sash that proclaims her as queen. “We’ve never done anything like this before,” she said. They will be appearing at many of the Riverboat Days events during the 10-day event and of course, riding in a car just for them in the parade to kick things off.

TERRACE - As part of this year’s Riverboat Days festivities, an association of local churches will be hosting its annual Church in the Park event on Sunday morning. “We are going to make music, we are going to pray for God’s blessings on our community, and we are going to hear a message from one of our pastors, Bob Pond,” explained Reg Friesen, pastor at the Terrace Alliance Church which has taken over organizing the event this year. The one-hour celebration will take place after a pancake breakfast in George Little Park and will feature a band of church leaders from the community that will lead the crowd in singing familiar hymns. “The intention is to bring all of the churches together and – to say we have different flavours and personalities and different core values – but our fundamentals of faith are the same so we won’t let our differences divide us,” said Bob Pond, pastor of the Evangelical Free Church that is leading the service this year. Pond cited that this is a unique opportunity as the churches in the community only have a chance to get together to celebrate a couple times a year, and this is one of them. “I think it is going to be fun being together, for those of us that worship week to week, but also for those of us who don’t normally attend church, this is an opportunity for all of us to come together,” said Friesen who will be leading the band. Pond plans to speak on issues that he feels affect interactions in the community. “I will speak on the importance of suffering – what do you do with the suffering that you are experiencing as a person,” he said.

Pastors Bob Pond, left, and Reg Friesen lead the service and the music at Church in the Park Aug. 2. “There are some good things about suffering because it helps us relate to other people who are suffering – we have to use this to bring comfort to people in our community.” The Church in the Park celebrations started in the early 2000s when the Evangelical Free Church held the event during the summer as part of its outreach. It was then asked by Riverboat Days to hold the prayer during Riverboat Days and that is when they teamed up with the Terrace Ministerial Association to host the event every year since. The event sees hundreds of people turn out each year, and Pond and Friesen say that they hope to make everyone feel welcome. “We want to make it accessible, that’s why we have it in the park,” Pond said. “Sunday in the park is going to be about celebrating the faithfulness of God, I believe that this really helps us put everything into perspective,” said Friesen. Church in the Park takes place August 2 at 11 a.m. and attendees are advised to bring their own chair.

Meat Draws are still held every Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a total of eight draws during the twohour period. Currently, the Riverboat Days parade is being organized by Comrade Joyce Bradley and the theme this year for the Parade is Showcasing Sports in the Northwest. Riverboats days is always a busy time at the Legion as the Legion is the Parade sponsor. Should you be interested in entering a float into the parade you can leave your entry form with bar staff. After the parade, the judges gather at the Legion to tally up and make their decisions on the winners in each of the categories they score. Following the Parade, take in the annual Legion barbecue, hamburgers and hotdogs for parade entrants, parade watchers and just plain Riverboat Days celebrants. Have a bite and support your Legion. Two new events will be sponsored at the Legion during Riverboat Days. On Saturday August 8, an adult trivia contest starting at 2 p.m. with a $5 entry fee for each team, and on Sunday August 9 there will be a family trivia contest starting at 1 p.m. also a $5 entry fee. Team maximum is

five and for the family trivia, there must be a youth on the team. Because we are going “family and kids friendly” for the Sunday event, no alcohol will be available on Sunday. If interested for either day, please e-mail your team name to secretary@branch13.org and a spot will be held for your team. Another big initia-

tive being taken on by the membership committee headed by Comrade Bernie Hallock is gathering e-mail addresses of members. Over the next couple of months do not be surprised to receive a phone call from Comrade Hallock asking if you would like to provide us with your e-mail address so that the executive can keep members up to

date on upcoming legion events. If you would like be proactive, you can send your e-mail address to Bernie@branch13.org. The executive is very interested in hearing from the membership. If you have ideas, concerns, and suggestions or want to volunteer for the Meat Draws, Steak Night or spe-

cial event such as dances, etc., please let us know. You can reach the Branch 13 executive secretary at secretary@ branch13.org who will bring your suggestions and ideas to executive. A reminder that we have been struggling to reach a quorum at our general meetings and in an attempt to address this, the first general

meeting after summer break will be the second Saturday of each month, starting with September 12th at 1 p.m. Monies raised by the Legion are given back to both veterans and the community of Terrace. An example of this is The Frank Morris/ Branch 13 Bursary Fund recently giving $5,000 in bursary money for

Nightmares finish season with points total best

By Cecile Favron

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - Last week’s Summer Smackdown roller derby bout was a gruelling challenge for Terrace’s short-rostered North Coast Nightmares who quashed the larger Rated PG b-team 247-171 which was a season high for points. Though temperatures had cooled outside for what was the final bout of the year, the inside of the Hidber Arena was still steamy, and by late in the bout, hands slipped from shoulders, fouls prevailed and the competition became admittedly sloppy. After a strong first, the Nightmares entered the second half 134-53, but PG rapidly gained points as their opponents tired out. Still, the Nightmares fought to keep their lead and, despite some hard hits, finished the match with an emphatic victory. “PG does do good offence and it tripped us up for a little while in the first half and then we were able to handle it until fatigue set in in the second half,” said the Nightmares coach Chris “Skimo” Thomas. Terrace played the bout with only nine players as opposed to

the usual 14. “We played with a very short roster - PG had 12 [players] and they took advantage of that,” said Thomas. Thomas noted that Terrace has been working on their defence since the regional tournament in

Richmond last month and that contributed to their win. “We have been working really hard on our defence and it paid off,” Thomas explained. “Also Dream Warrior (Tarea Roberge) has been asking to play offence all season and we finally

let her do what she’s best at,” said Thomas. Thomas commended rookie Comet Crush’her (Laura Haley) for her courageous play. “She has no fear, she gets right in there and gets full contact. There was a point in the game

were I saw her push almost the whole other team off track at once taking one of our players with them,” he said. Kasey Lewis, a.k.a. “Jugless” also stood out. “Jugless [Kasey Lewis], she is one of our jammers, she had struggled at the beginning of the year with the penalties, but in this bout she was very aware of the track and was able to avoid those penalties even when people forced her into them,” he explained. Thomas said they have been working on keeping their offensive plays strong even while they focus on their defence. “To get to the next level of play, we have to be able to deal with other teams that are capable of [strong defence and offence],” he said. This was also the first game for the newest referee Terra Nord who had previously played on the team until she sustained a knee injury last year. “Anyone who wants to challenge themselves physically but doesn’t want the full contact portion that comes with Roller Derby should try being a ref,” said Nord. The Nightmares training camp is in October.

Rampage to make hockey playoffs By Kevin Campbell THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

Star coach tutors talent By Cameron Orr

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - In the circles of the soccer world Tony Waiters is a bit of a big deal. As a head soccer coach, he led the Canadian team to the finals of the 1986 World Cup. Today, he spends much of his time passing on his knowledge to the younger generations. Recently, Kitimat was able to add themselves to the places he’s been, as he supported the Kitimat Youth Soccer Association with some workshops.

Waiters said this was his first time in Kitimat and admits he was actually surprised to see how well established the town was. Through a sweltering hot July weekend, Waiters put Kitimat kids through their paces. He said his coaching process includes not just the children but he works with the coaching staff as well. He said coaches are a key piece to developing effective soccer programs, where he pushes the idea to constantly have the players moving and doing activities, which he says is the best way to learn the game. Kitimat Youth Soccer was very pleased to have Waiters coming to town to share his knowledge.

PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Rampage are guaranteed to make the playoffs in the 2015-16 season. After the Central Interior Hockey League (CIHL) held its annual general meeting (AGM) in May, the playoff format was changed to allow all seven CIHL teams to enter the playoffs, which is a change from last season, when the bottom two West Division teams and the bottom East Division team didn’t make the post-season. The Rampage failed to qualify in 2014-15 after a 2-13-1 season. The top team in the east, out of Williams Lake, Quesnel and Lac La Hache will receive a first-round bye and then face the winner of the second and third seed in the second round. In the west between Rupert, Terrace, Kitimat and Smithers, the first seed will play the fourth and the second will play the third in the first round. The winning teams from those two matches then play each other and the emerging two teams from the second round division finals will then face off in the CIHL final. “All the teams are coming back,” said Rampage general manager Ron German. “There are no new teams and the CIHL has a new president – [Terrace River Kings manager] Ray Hallock.” Hallock takes over presidential duties from pastpresident J.C. Brown. “The vice-president is going to be Cliff Madsen from Kitimat,” said German, adding the league is still looking for a treasurer and league sponsor.

This is our smelter

Our people are the heart of our modernization A new era in aluminium production is beginning in Kitimat. Smelter modernization will reposition BC Operations as one of the most sustainable and competitive primary metal aluminium producers in the world. The technology will revolutionize the way we work, dramatically reducing total emissions by nearly 50 per cent. Good news for all of us - our employees, their families and our community. But it’s not just about technical edge - our employees are the real competitive advantage.

This is Harvey’s story One seasoned employee contributing to Kitimat’s bright future is Harvey Grant. Harvey currently works as a process supervisor in the new AP40 Reduction department - a key area for the new smelter’s ramp up to full capacity. As with many other Reduction area personnel, the First Hot Metal milestone recognized in July is a significant achievement. It represents a big step towards modernized operations. For Harvey, it means “the start of a new era. A new chapter in aluminium production in Kitimat - very exciting times.” With 37 years of aluminium reduction experience, he’s consistently seen change throughout his career - KMP is just the most recent. Born and raised locally in Kitamaat Village, Harvey was encouraged as a young adult to pursue a profession outside of the family fishing tradition. He got his start in the aluminium business as a potroom trainee in 1978 and has been hands-on in the reduction process ever since. Through those years he’s seen many technology and procedural improvements, but “one constant has been the commitment of the people here. There is a true sense of empowerment when we’re involved in making change happen - many important changes are taking place right now.” Although many innovations will debut with Kitimat’s smelter start-up, it’s employee know-how and how we work together through decades of aluminium production experience that have positioned BC Operations for success.
