The Bluffton Bulldogs mens’ team won the silver medal in the Intermediate B/C mens’ fast pitch provincials in Grande Prairie July 17-19. Their first game was against

Clear Prairie, after giving up five runs in the first inning they went on to lose 6-5. The next game was against the Delburne Bulls who they beat 116. The game saw lead off hitter and starting left fielder Josh Dubielew break his hand diving for a ball.

Saturday morning’s game was against Sunset House Snipers from Valleyview. Bobby Grinde pitched a shutout giving Bluffton a 4-0 win. The last game of the round robin was against Calgary Pirates. Logan Steeves pitched well in a poorly played game.

The Bulldogs came out on top 10-7 giving them a berth in the intermediate B-Gold medal game, Sunday morning. The SSH Sniper’s pitcher was hot, giving up only solo homeruns to Mackenzie Stout and Mike Steeves. The Bulldogs were defeated

5-2, giving them the silver medal. The Bulldogs now will concentrate on the Highway 21 league playoffs. Bluffton is the number one team in the league after playing each team twice. Playoffs began July 27 in Bluffton at 7 p.m.

Rimbey RCMP wear their red serge uniforms to march in parade

Over the past two weeks Rimbey RCMP have responded to and proactively investigated 120 occurrences, including: domestic violence, mental health, theft, break and enters, missing children, criminal harassment, motor vehicle collisions, and traffic complaints to name a few. On top of their regular duties of protecting and serving the fine people of this community, the Rimbey RCMP shined up their boots and marched in red serge at the lead of this year’s Rimbey Rodeo Parade. It was a very warm day. The heat of the sun was almost unbearable, but the real warmth came from an appreciative crowd. Thank you for your support. Charges laid in domestic assault During this reporting period, two people were charged with domestic assault. In one case, their children were exposed to the violence. Child and Family Services were no-

tified of the incident, and they are following up to ensure the safety of the children involved. Children are very impressionable. Their biggest role models in life are their parents. With this in mind, it is imperative that we as parents and caregivers lead by our best example. Following in-depth research into what adolescents require to grow into healthy, caring, and responsible people, the Search Institute has discovered 40 developmental assets. Parents and adult caregivers play a key role in the successful development of our youth. Similarly, parents can also have the most profound negative impact on a developing youth. How we treat others echoes far beyond the moment we are in. For more information on the 40 Developmental Assets, visit search-institute.org. If you are having trouble in your relationship with a significant other, and you don’t know what to do or where to turn, please call the Rimbey Victim Service Unit at 403-843-8494 for assistance. If you have been a victim of domestic violence, call 911 to report the crime. Break and enters investigated The RCMP investigated three break and enters. At least two individuals broke into a house on a rural property late at night. They

THINGS HAVE CHANGED…

stole some items from the yard and from the house before the owner of the house woke up and scared them away. The RCMP learned that some of the items were sold that day to a guy in Bentley. He thought he was getting a great deal, until we rolled up. Property was recovered and one 28-yearold male was charged with possession of stolen property. Charges are pending on the suspects who committed the break-in. Unsolved thefts Other thefts remain unsolved. A skid steer was stolen from a rural property near Rimbey, and a holiday trailer was stolen from a yard in town. The RCMP is actively investigating these thefts and would appreciate information from the public that would assist in recovering the property and identifying the thieves. If you have any information regarding these or

any other crimes, please call the local Rimbey RCMP Detachment at (403) 843-2224 or Crime Stoppers: PHONE: 1-800-222-8477 #8477 on Telus Mobility *8477 on Rogers AT&T Crime Stoppers is a community program that does work! Do your part and call now. Finally, a word on boat safety. Lately, many people have been taking advantage of the warm weather and enjoying time on the water. For one boater on Gull Lake things got hot when he had an engine fire onboard. The fire was safely extinguished and the boat was recovered by a volunteer fireman who was in the area. In order to have a truly enjoyable time on the water, certain emergency equipment is required in your boat: lifejackets for each person on board,

emergency first aid kit, reboarding device, 15 meters of buoyant heavy line, watertight flashlight, flares, manual propelling device (oars) or an anchor, manual bilge pump or bailer, sound signaling device. You may notice that beer is not on the list of required equipment. As a matter of fact, it does not even make the

list of optional equipment. Be aware that transporting liquor on a boat may subject you to fines under the Gaming and Liquor Act. Furthermore, if the boat operator is under the influence of alcohol, he or she may be charged criminally for impaired operation just like they would if driving a car.

Treena Mielke On The Other Side The day raced ahead of me like greased lightning, but finally, thankfully, it ended and there was nothing left to do but go home. In my head I do the list. Surface of desk respectably devoid of papers, sticky notes, pens, candy wrappers, water bottles and coffee mugs. Check! Stories written, proof read and placed in appropriate folder. Check! and the book slips out of your fingers and crashes to the floor. I tried to imagine having the time to actually play 18 holes of golf, badly, because playing 18 holes of golf well is beyond even my imagination. I imagined having the time to browse in one of those old bookstores where grandmas like me and kids with frayed shorts and Tshirts with obnoxious sayings splayed across the front can hang out easily together. It seems, in these places where books are packed haphazardly on shelves, in nooks and crannies and on window seals and little molecules of dust hang suspended in the air, time stands perfectly still and life is good and gentle and kind.

I imagined being on the beach with my grandchildren and never saying, “hurry up, let’s go! Instead, I would say, “We can stay as long as you want. Lets build another sandcastle.” Well, as life would have it, the pieces of reality and imagination don’t usually fit together perfectly, but luckily for me, some pieces did fit, smoothly like it was part of a big, giant plan. Too cool! The bookstore happened. I found so many of them in the interior of B.C. where the sun rained heat down on us in waves, and my Alberta white skin gradually took on a whole new shade o bronze and not out of a bottle. I wore sunglasses, striving for the Audrey Hepburn look or maybe Jackie Kennedy,

but behind them, I was just a nearsighted grandma, seeing only a blur of people and things. Still, I was happy! One day I took two of the grandchildren to the beach, loading up sand pails and shovels and little blue fish and towels and bathing suits and walking with them across the sun kissed pavement to buy bubble gum ice cream. We washed their blue ice cream faces in the lake and always I will remember the sound of their laughter and the splash of waves and the sweet overpowering surge of love I felt as I wrapped their little bodies in huge beach towels. One day. One moment. One holiday. Ahhh! It truly doesn’t get any better!

Instructions and suggestions left for reporter covering for me. Check! I turned the key in the lock on the office door, giving the door a quick body check to make sure it really was locked, climbed into my somewhat old, but very much paid for SUV and turned my wheels southward and homeward. Holidays. Two glorious weeks. Does it get any better? Holiday type visions, doing summersaults and cartwheels, crashed into each other in my brain. And so it came to be that about the same time as shards of sunlight slipped down, touching the green leaves of summer with a shimmer of gold, I mentally shed my mind of work and deadlines. At least I tried to. “Relax,” everyone said. “Just relax. Remember, you are on holidays.” Oh, how I loved it. The concept. The whole idea. Relaxing. Reading a book in the middle of the day, until you are sun soaked and sleepy

I’ve been a mechanic for long enough — I started before I was done high school. My college endeavours seem to trump any desire for more busted knuckles. Last winter I completed my junior year of my English program at RDC. It had two terms worth of basic English classes. Both were manda-

tory for continuing into the 300 level courses. I was a little strategic in picking my second term class, I wanted to have the same professor I had during my first term. Too long ago I learned from a fellow mechanic some important apprenticeship philosophy. He was speaking in regards to pulling wrenches, but his advice transcends the bay doors of the mechanic shop. To paraphrase the mechanics words of knowledge: “When do you learn the most?... When you foul up. And whom do you learn the most from? The old guy working in the corner of the shop”. My English professor at RDC, in my junior year, was the old guy working in the corner of the college.

He retired after the better part of a lifetime lecturing English and wielding a doctorate. It was an easy decision to select a second term English class with Dr. Mills at the helm. Mills was a white bearded old man, with a booming voice, that didn’t need to examine the charts to read the currents or navigate the winds of academia. Mills’ office had shelves with stacks of old books and anthologies. He admittedly said he had no use for the majority of his office literature collection after he retired — I can just imagine what that man’s study at home is shelved with. Colleagues, students, and friends were invited to take whatever books they liked

from his office shelves — I was blessed with the opportunity to expand my book collection. Twenty-one books were gifted to me from Mills; and the authors of those books ranged from Joyce to Shakespeare. Before I left Mills’ office, he apologized that many of the texts had hand written notes in the margins from when the books were used in his lectures. There was no apology required. Those hand written scrawls were the personal notes of a Doctor of English and Mills’ comments are of the same value as the author’s words they reflect on. Reading Mills’ notes was like having a beer with an old burnt out mechanic — nonexpendable wisdom to

be soaked up. I haven’t read a fraction of the books Mills’ gave me yet. However, I have stumbled through a few of the short stories, the odd essay, and a handful of old poems that reside in my latest additions to my collection of literature. For the longest time, the books I was gifted sat separate from my other pillars of books. Mills’ texts were on my kitchen table in two small stacks. I sat and was enamoured with the worn bindings, the yellowed pages, and the many texts waiting to be inputted into my conscious. I felt like an apprentice, again, that was just given a pile of old workshop manuals from an old mechanic.

Janet McKay raised more than $7,000 in a private fundraiser for the Beatty House. Amelia Naismith Photo

Beatty House receives a sizeable donation BY AMELIA NAISMITH

The Beatty House Society recently received a real treat after thousands of dollars was privately fundraised and donated to the house. Janet McKay, who works in the house the days opposite its summer student Natasha Bartsch, decided to take it upon herself to raise the $7,005. “I felt that I wanted to do something that really contributed to the Beatty House,” said Mckay. Her fundraiser was to have the exterior of the house painted. Along with her daughter, McKay constructed and sold approximately 150 silk floral arrangements. With her second daughter she constructed and raffled seven different sized quilts. “That was my big fundraiser,” said McKay. A third daughter hosted a bottle collection on behalf of her mother. “And I would just take it down to the bottle depot here,” said McKay. McKay also took donations as part of her fundraising efforts. “I had one little girl about three years old give me a donation for two cents. And my highest donation, from Mike, was $500.” McKay was first introduced to the house and the society while she was working as Pas Ka Poo Park more than 20 years ago. At the time her husband Gerry also worked at the park. It was at the couples’ farewell party, held at the Beatty House, that McKay fell in love. “I really love this place. It’s a feeling,” said McKay. “And the society does so much for the Beatty House. All the different staff here are just so excellent to work with,” she added. McKay’s husband was also a huge supporter of her fundraising efforts by managing her transportation. “I’m going to do more, definitely,” said McKay. The Beatty House Society has expressed how thrilled and grateful it is to have McKay working so hard above the call of duty for the house. While giving tours of the house McKay loves to point out to guests some of her favorite features, starting at the edge of the yard with its stone facing. McKay also encourages visitors to ring the working doorbell. “And I also point out the petrified wood on the fireplace and the working fireplace,” said McKay. “The fireplace to me is a really big thing,” she added. Some of her other favorite elements of the house include the vintage light fixtures, the kitchen nook and a small window that allows visitors to peer into the internal structure of the walls. “In the restoration they saved a lot of layers wallpaper so people could see it,” said McKay. A provincially sanctioned historic treasure, the Beatty House is open from May to September.

This summer a Rimbey schoolteacher will receive professional development training first hand as he walks on the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars. Paul Payson, a Grade 6/7 teacher at the Christian School is one of 25 Canadian educators who have been selected to travel to Juno Beach Centre’s annual Summer Institute and Battlefield Tour in France. It promises to be a poignant journey back in time where Payson will have the opportunity to walk on the very ground where the brave young soldiers of the horrific world wars fought and died for freedom. Payson, who is one of the organizers for the Remembrance Day Service at the school, said he is very much looking forward to the tour which he is confident will help him gain first hand knowledge that he can bring back to the classroom. “We will be working on a project with the Legion,” he said. “We want to identify all the veterans’ graves. The younger kids will make poppies and we will place them on all the graves.” The tour, to be held July 26 to August 4, includes visits to Vimy Ridge, BeaumontHamel, Dieppe and historical sites in Normandy including the Juno Beach Centre, Omaha Beach and Arroanches. A Remembrance Service at the Bretteville Canadian War Cemetery where 2,500 Canadians are buried will also be part of the agenda. The participants for the tour were selected based on motivational letters describing the anticipated personal and professional benefits of this experience with particular emphasis on how their teaching of Canadian History will be enhanced in their classrooms and the school. The Juno Beach Centre is Canada’s only museum on the D-day Landing Beaches in Normandy, founded by Second World War veterans in 2003 as a lasting testament to the Canadian contribution on D-Day and the Normandy Invasion. Rimbey seniors bring home medals and smiles from Alberta Summer 55+ Games BY TREENA MIELKE

Although not everyone came home with medals from the 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Games held in Strathmore earlier this month, everyone who attended is surely a winner. The Games, the province’s premier multi-sport and cultural event, promotes physical, intellectual, and social wellness regardless of age or ability. The event is the ideal mix of sport, competition, and fun. Participants must qualify in Zones to compete in the Games. Host cities provide participants with full accommodation, food, and entertainment. Sport and cultural competitions are accompanied by a torch relay, kick off/closing ceremonies, and host city events. This year’s Games marks the 35th anniversary of the event, which is held every two years in communities across Alberta. Seniors from Rimbey

who attended the event did themselves proud, many of thing bringing home medals, and all of them being great ambassadors of the community in which they live. Floor curling In the 55+ Open Floor Curling the team consisting of (skip) Gordon and (second) Brenda Mounteney and (third) Vivian and (lead) Dave Mulligan struck gold. Mulligan, who played lead for the team, said it was a humbling experience. “It was humbling, but it feels good. It’s an experience like never before.” Mulligan said there were no runaway games. “The most we won by was two points,” he said. The Rimbey team took on Edmonton for the gold medal game and the score was tied until the last end when Rimbey forged ahead with a single point. “It was a hard fought game,” said Mulligan. continued on page 8

Alberta Summer 55+ Games winners continued from page 7 Mounteney’s Rimbey team played seven games, losing their second game to a team from Lethbridge. Open Military Whist Bill Howe, Russ Picketts, Gladys Wilson and Alice Picketts from Rimbey came home with a bronze medal. “It was an awesome experience,’ said Alice Picketts. “We would have liked to have done better, but we are happy to have won a medal.” Pickets said the experience of attending the Games is wonderful and one that every senior should take advantage of. “It is a wonderful thing to do. And for seniors to be active is a wonderful thing.” Pickets stressed Rimbey’s Drop In Centre is a great place for seniors to pursue activities such as whist, noting in order to advance to the Provincial level, players need to win at Zones. She said the Drop In helps card players such as herself and her husband keep on the top of the game and face competitions with the level of skill necessary to move on. Golf Debbie Retzlaff brought home a bronze

medal in the 55+ ladies low gross golf competition. “It was good,” she said. “It all went fairly well.” Retzlaff played 18-holes on the Strathmore golf course which she said had some tricky greens. “I love golf and the Games were great. The fellowship, the people you meet, they’re all fun to golf with. The experience is always great. It was beautiful out there.” Arts & Crafts Harry Tucker struck gold in the miscellaneous craft category with an acrylic pen. Barb Patey won a silver medal with a Christmas quilted wall hanging and Brenda Restall also won silver with a stuffed teddy bear. Creative writing Brenda Restall received a bronze medal with her poem entitled The Dance of Fire. Alvin Goetz, also from Rimbey, won a bronze with his non-fiction humorous story entitled Leroy Brownlee – Unsuspecting Millionaire. Lethbridge is hosting the Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games on February 19 – 22, 2016.

Silent auction items are a big part of the fundraiser, where 100 per cent of the proceeds are gifted to the Red Deer Regional Hospital Neonatal Care Unit, and Game On had a custom knife specifically crafted for the Big Hearts silent auction. “It’s a handmade knife made in Alberta. So it’s a true piece of art,” Von Hollen explained. “We are proud to be a sponsor of this charity. It goes with what Game On believes in,” she added. For the first in the history of the three-year poker rally it was covered and televised by the Dimestore Fishermen television program. The program was invited into the operation by Von Hollen. “Our outdoor television show is shining a light on this because it a really exciting thing to see; everyday Albertans getting together and joining forces to raise money for such an outstanding cause,” said host/producer/creator Jim Hoey. The program shows on various Shaw channels; Wild TV; NTV and Newcap Television. “It is the coolest thing ever. You’ve got something that stops people, makes them look,” said Hoey. The bikers involved started the one-day rally at Cycle Works in Red Deer. They then traveled to Innisfail, Spruce View, Rimbey, Blackfalds and Evil Side Customs in Red Deer before returning to Cycle Works. “It’s a fun day and we’re doing something great. I guess the way I look at it, it mixes what I like to do and what lot of people like to do — riding motorcycles — and doing something good,” said co-organizer and Big Hearts representative Matt Battauz. The poker rally is open to all bikers who wish to get involved and even those who do not ride can participate. Donations can be brought to stop locations, silent auction bids and 50/50 tickets all help to boost that final number. In the first year of the event it raised between $8,500 and $9,000. Last year approximately $12,000 was raised.

Drivers race themselves in double-header weekend BY AMELIA NAISMITH

It was a scorcher of a weekend and drivers from across western Canada were really in the hot seat as they faced off other drivers and their own abilities in a Central Alberta Raceways drag race double header, July 11 and 12. Drag race director Rod Schaff says there were 110 participating teams on Saturday and 100 on Sunday. “We have had people come from northern BC, central Saskatchewan and Montana,” said Schaff. “By 12 o’ clock we were doing the qualifying runs and by 1 o’ clock we were doing the eliminations,” Schaff explained. Amid the smoke and the roar of the engines each driver made two qualifying run to see how fast their vehicle would run the track. Using this knowledge, racers would guess what their time would be in the eliminator race and whoever was closed to their set time won the race. This went on until only one vehicle and driver was left standing as the champion. “There’s one winner after it’s all said and done,” said Schaff. “What we’ve been doing is we have been doing trophies so far.” The winner also receives $100 and bragging rights while the second-place finisher is awarded $50. However, Schaff says in the future he is hoping to have the resources to get an actual pot together. The Rimbey racetrack is not a part of a larger circuit so the winner of a weekend event is the ultimate champion for that time. “Right now every weekend is its own individual weekend,” said Schaff. There were a number of classes racers could compete in: sportsman, pro, super pro, juniors and bikes and quads. Over the weekend on July 10 and 11 an oval race double header also took place. The next drag race event is Aug. 8 and 9 and the next oval race, another double-header weekend is set for Aug. 21 and 22.

FortisAlberta reminds farmers of important power line safety Summer is a busy time on Alberta’s farm. It’s time to spray crops, move bins and many other high loads or pieces of equipment. FortisAlberta is asking farmers to remember to work safely around power lines. In 2014, 14 power line contacts involved air seeders and sprayers, a concerning trend. A farm fatality occurred earlier this year, which is driving utilities to reach out to farmers, ranchers and anyone who operates agricultural equipment. “Precision farming practices, which involve GPS devices are giving us a new cause for concern in addition to the growing height of farm equipment,” says Dan Thayer, Manager, Health and Safety at FortisAlberta. In 2014, there were a total of 227 contacts with FortisAlberta’s overhead power lines, 41 of them involving agricultural equipment. While that’s an average of 18 per cent of all contacts, the severity of the incidents is generally greater in the agricultural sector. Each year, FortisAlberta reaches out to the agricultural community through tradeshows, advertising and personal visits. Since the 1950s, the size of farm equipment has doubled. Farmers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the power lines on or near their land. Compared to highways and public roads, power line clearances are lower in field access approaches, across fields and at yard entrances. Farmers are asked to take the following into consideration when planning their work and equipment layout. Store hay, grain bins and other equipment and vehicles away from overhead power lines. Never attempt to lift or measure a power line yourself. Contact FortisAlberta to determine the power line clearance heights on your land and consider where the contour of the land may reduce this distance. Know the heights of your vehicles including the added height of extendable or attached parts such as sprayer booms, cranes or augers and always lower equipment before moving. Never spray water hoses or irrigation pivots at power lines. When equipment like

augers are parked and operating, maintain a distance of at least seven metres from the nearest overhead power line. If you have to get closer than seven metres, please contact your electricity company to verify the proper limits of approach. What to do in the event of a power line contact: Stay calm. Your vehicle or equipment and the ground around you may be energized! Stay inside your cab and call for help unless there is a fire. You can try to break the vehicle free from the contact and get at least 10 metres away, but only if it doesn’t cause further risk to yourself or others, or more serious damage to the power line. Keep others at least 10

metres away. If the vehicle is on fire, jump away with your feet together, then bunny hop or use small shuffles to get at least 10 metres away from the area. Open walking strides may enable current from energized ground to travel through your body. Never touch an energized object such as a vehicle when you are also touching the ground. For more information including a video on power line safety for farmers, visit fortisalberta.com or contact 310-WIRE (9473). FortisAlberta serves 530,000 customers in more than 200 communities across Alberta including more than 60 per cent of Alberta’s total electricity distribution network.

Rodeo announcer Tim Edge is extra in movie The Revenant BY TREENA MIELKE

Local rodeo announcer, Tim Edge had his own taste of Hollywood a few months ago when he was an extra in the movie, The Revenant, staring Leonardo DiCaprio. Edge, who was one of the men on horseback when scenes from the movie were filmed around Crescent Falls and Nordegg last April. “Westerns fit into my character,” he said, noting he has performed in movies as an extra previously. “I’ve been in a few.” As well as a rodeo announcer, Edge is a rancher, rodeo competitor and fourth generation cowboy, During his career, he spent several years in Paris as lead in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show Disneyland. During that time he performed stunts and trick roping, while also acting as the master of ceremonies for the largest dinner theatre in Europe, speaking both in French and English. While he enjoyed the time spent in Paris and found his recent role as an extra in The Revenant fun and exciting, he is kept very busy working as a master of ceremonies and announcer at rodeos and shows. His own business, Mountain Edge Productions has achieved acclaim throughout the country. And when he is not busy traveling to a rodeo or event, he is looking after his own ranching duties. “As soon as I got home (from the shoot) I was straight back to feeding cattle,” he said. The Revenant is inspired by true events and captures one man’s adventure of survival after being attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. The movie is the story of legendary explorer Hugh Glass played by Leonardo DiCaprio who lives through a vicious winter in an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness. The Revenant is directed and co-written by renowned filmmaker, Academy Award winner Alejandro G. Inarritu (Birdman, Babel).
