Rampant mailbox theft plagues region Canada Post won’t reveal details about crime problem Tyler OLSEN

Abbotsford News

Thieves struck a major community mailbox hub in Abbotsford twice last week and have hit more than two dozen locations in Mission over the past two months. But Canada Post won’t reveal the full scope of the theft problem. Last Wednesday, Janay Froese arrived at her local community mailbox (CMB) at McMillan and Old Yale roads to find more than a dozen boxes opened. Two days later, she returned to find even more boxes had been entered at the site, which hosts more than 500 such units. “None of these were ripped off,” she said Friday, as she surveyed the damage. “This is all new.” The doors of some boxes were sheared off, while others had the locks ripped out. Unopened mail remained behind in at least two of the opened boxes. A contractor for Canada Post arrived just after Froese. He had been called to repair 13 boxes, and was surprised that more had been breached. A quick count showed a total of 31 boxes had been opened. Earlier this year, Abbotsford Police reported the region had 23 separate incidents in January and February. Const. Ian MacDonald did not have data on mail crime trends since then, but he said thefts seem to be down from two years ago, when the Lower Mainland was found to have the most mail crime in the nation. “That said, the magnitude of the theft is enormous,” he said, noting that stolen

“Canada Post does its best to suppress news stories.” CUPW cites a report of 4,800 incidents over a five-year period in B.C. “The absence of national reporting of CMB break-ins and the refusal of Canada Post to release timely figures on the number of thefts from CMBs serves to undermine the ability of the public to evaluate Canada Post’s claims concerning the safety and security of

Anick Losier has begun to install more secure boxes that are tougher for thieves to enter. Those generally have short, wide slots, while the older, more vulnerable boxes have square openings. The News did not receive an answer from Canada Post about how many old-style boxes had been replaced. On Monday, Abbotsford city council received a letter from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) that included a study conducted by the CUPW on the implications of home mail delivery. The authors wrote that

community mailbox delivery.” The report included a poll that found 7.6 per cent of respondents had mail stolen and 16.3 per cent had their CMB vandalized. TTT Canada Post has been trying to persuade customers that a move away from door-to-door service will not have a major impact on residents. Last December, Canada Post announced all door-to-door service in Abbotsford would stop by this fall, with mail to the 12,000 residents in the city’s core diverted to CMBs.

Thousands already received mail in such boxes. In Mission, the move was slated to affect 6,100 addresses. When the conversion in completed later this year, close to 99 per cent of residents will be served by CMBs. At Monday’s meeting of Abbotsford council, Coun. Brenda Falk asked about costs to the city due to the CMBs, such as vandalism reports to police, following correspondence from the CUPW about their concerns. She asked whether there are permit fees to install the mailboxes and help cover the costs to the city. According to city communication staff, the city will receive a $50 permit fee for each site – which will allow up to three multi-unit mailboxes – with an additional $50 fee for more boxes. There are about 385 proposed location sites for community mailboxes in Abbotsford. At a Mission council meeting in April, a large crowd of people came out to protest the change, with some accusing Canada Post of destroying a public service. Mission council had also voiced concerns over a lack of consultation regarding where CMBs will be located. – with files from Alex Butler and Jeff Nagel

Mission has averaged close to one mailbox break-in every two days. “From June 1 to July 27, 2015 we had 26 incidents of theft from Canada Post mailboxes,” said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. He called it a “spike” in activity, but also noted that the thefts come in clusters. “Typically, people who do that are very prolific so they’ll hit a large number, five or 10, mailboxes at one time.” TTT Not all incidents are reported to police, with some citizens opting to go directly to Canada Post. A spokesperson for the Crown corporation would not reveal the number of incidents it has dealt with this year. Asked if things had changed since the winter, Canada Post media relations director Anick Losier wrote in an email: “I’m not going to get into specifics because it would only benefit those who have little regard for law-abiding citizens but I can confirm we are working closely with police.” Asked if matters had improved, Losier wrote: “for us (and the victims), one is too many ... Man pleads guilty in fatal crash Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

An Abbotsford man has pleaded guilty to two offences in relation to a fatal crash that took place in March. Brandon Mitchell James Hayes, 19, pleaded guilty Thursday in Abbotsford provincial court to dangerous driving causing death and possession of stolen property over $5,000. Two additional charges – dangerous driving causing bodily harm and theft over $5,000 – are expected to be stayed. A pre-sentence report is scheduled to be presented in court on Sept. 8. Sentencing could take place that day or

be scheduled for a later date. The crash in which Hayes was the driver took place just before 4:30 a.m. on March 10 in the area of Wells Line and Smith Line roads on Sumas Prairie. Police and other first responders arrived on the scene to find a rolled-over 2003 Toyota Tacoma pickup. The vehicle had been travelling west on Wells Line Road, veered off the road and through a fence, and came to rest in the front yard of a home. Two men were still in the vehicle, and one of them, a passenger in the back seat, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The other man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. A 14-year-old girl who had been in the vehicle was found a short distance from the scene and was also transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A third male was located in a nearby outbuilding and was not seriously injured. The Toyota Tacoma was confirmed as being stolen from central Abbotsford three days before the crash. Hayes is also scheduled to go to trial Aug. 20 on a charge of uttering threats the day before the crash.

High rollers push gambling to new record Lottery corporation profit hits $1.25 billion with rise in bet limit Jeff NAGEL Black Press

Foreign gamblers who bet up to $100,000 in a single hand in some B.C. casinos helped drive the provincial government’s gambling take to a record high last year. The B.C. Lottery Corporation’s net profit that goes to the province climbed 6.8 per cent to $1.25 billion in 2014-15, up $80 million from the previous year. The corporation’s annual report says the

increase was driven by “exceptional performance from high-limit table games, which saw the maximum bet raised from $75,000 to $100,000 at some sites. Casinos such as River Rock in Richmond and the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam offer “ultraprivate high-limit VIP poker rooms and baccarat salons that are popular with Asian tourists. The increase from high-limit gamblers offset weak results in lot-

teries, which were down because the year served up fewer large jackpots. While BCLC has gained from high rollers, the report warns their interest could wane. “The recent slowdown in some national economies and international currency restrictions present business risks, the report said, without explicitly mentioning China, where the government has intervened to prop up a falling stock market.

WAS IT

Pure Excellence?

“There is risk in this revenue stream as it is heavily dependent on a relatively small international player base, BCLC board chair Bud Smith said. “We know we cannot rely on this business segment for sustainable long-term growth. In fact, BCLC considers both lottery and casino revenues to be “facing market saturation. An estimated 51 per cent of B.C. adults gambled through BCLC at least monthly last year. That rate has fallen from 69 per cent in 2012 but BCLC is aiming to get it back up to 55 per cent next year. The average B.C. resident lost $482 a year to BCLC, up from $450 in 2012 and $382 in 2005. More than $950 million in net BCLC profit came from casinos and

High-limit gamblers are pushing up profits for province. slot-equipped community gaming centres, compared to $304 million from lotteries and e-gaming. River Rock had the highest combined slot and table game revenue of $420 million last year, followed by $204 million at the Grand Villa

Casino in Burnaby. Overall, $1.04 billion was lost gambling at those Lower Mainland casinos in 2014. Net profits from BCLC help the province fund health, education and grants to community groups. Host municipalities also get a share of

casino profits. Out of each dollar gambled in B.C., 43 cents goes to provincial and community programs, 23 cents goes to prizes, 23 cents goes to commissions and fees, nine per cent is operating expenses and two per cent is federal tax.

Average household debt in B.C. up 26 per cent Two-point interest rate hike would stress nearly three-quarters of those in debt Jeff NAGEL Black Press

High levels of debt mean many B.C. households may be under serious financial pressure once a long-expected climb in interest rates finally begins. British Columbians had an average of $99,834 in household debt in 2014, according to a new survey by Pollara conducted for BMO’s annual debt report. That’s up more than 26 per cent from $79,089 in 2013. According to the report, 58 per cent of B.C. households carry credit card debt despite the high interest rates they charge. That’s well above the national average of 52 per cent. It found 44 per cent in B.C. have mortgages and 10 per cent have student loans. Seventy-one per cent of B.C. respondents with household debt said they would be stressed if interest rates rose two points – significantly more than the national average of 64 per cent. “The sizable number of indebted households that would feel very strained by a relatively moderate increase in interest rates is concerning,” BMO senior economist Sal Guatieri said. “This is a worrisome side effect of a prolonged period of low interest rates...” Guatieri said the rising household debt levels may be partly explained in some areas by rapidly ris-

ing home prices that spur buyers to take on larger mortgages. Bank officials say an eventual rise in rates to normal levels is inevitable and families should stresstest their ability to withstand the increase. A house selling for about $700,000 requires mortgage payments of $2,840 a month, assuming a 2.7 per cent rate, 10 per cent down payment and 25year amortization. A two-point rise to 4.7 per cent would take that payment up to $3,500. Too many people in the Lower Mainland in particular are buying homes at prices that leave them barely able to cover the mortgage and associated household costs, said Gary Tymoschuk, vice-president of operations for the Credit Counselling Society. “A lot of British Columbians are living pretty close to that wire in terms of our overall indebtedness versus what we can afford to pay,” Tymoschuk said. “The smallest little tick up in the interest rate could certainly negatively affect a lot of people and put a lot of stress on their household budgets.” Presented by

Public entitled to theft data

Canada Post has a major problem which it would prefer not to talk about. Anectodal evidence and police reports indicate theft from community mailboxes is rampant. We’d like to let you know exactly how many times the communal boxes have been hit in Abbotsford and Mission this year, and in previous years. We’d like to inform you how much it has cost to repair or replace all those jimmied locks and pried box doors, which must be in the hundreds annually. We’d like to tell you how many pieces of mail have gone missing, and how many customers have been impacted. However, Canada Post is not sharing those details. Considering the issue involves millions of customers of this government-owned public service, the lack of forthcoming information is completely unacceptable. A Canada Post communications representative responded to The News’ request for numbers by saying that discussing “specifics” would only

benefit criminals. What a ridiculous statement. Using that addled logic, police departments should not tell the public how many murders have been committed, or how many vehicles have been stolen, or how many homes have been broken into in their communities. An uninformed public is a happier public, right? Oh, how wrong. Many citizens are understandably dismayed to see community mailboxes replacing door-to-door mail service. And Canada Post adds insult to injury by suppressing details on the magnitude of the theft problem. It is a travesty that The News has to file federal access to information requests to access these statistics. That is data that should be freely and easily accessible. The MPs of our communities should be applying intense pressure on Canada Post to cough up the uncomfortable details on this chronic problem, exactly how it’s being dealt with, and the associated costs.

Creative solutions needed for water

So tired of the phrase “our water is precious or “brown lawns are like gold. What a bunch of brainwashed bunk. I also get tired of the refrain that those who want a green lawn are the bad guys. They aren’t the bad guys. They care about their property. Those who don’t care or are unaware that it adds to the outside temperature are the ones who want brown lawns. Black top gives off 30 per cent more heat than green lawns and brown lawns give off 15 per cent more heat. I use an electric lawn mower to cut carbon emissions into the air and run it approximately an hour a week, but my lawn gives off oxygen 112 hours a week, resulting in moisture that cools the area. The city council already knows we will

have a bigger problem 10 years out with a larger population and more commercial usage. Our main problem is not lack of water; it’s the lack of water management and a lack of creative ideas. We need municipalities to come up with creative ideas on how to tap all the rain we get all fall and winter. Presently, their only solution is to stop lawn watering. Start now to require that every new structure built in the area install a $10,000 to $20,000 cistern. Set up two water systems: one for drinking (municipal) and one for outside taps and toilets, etc. (rain runoff). Part of the water from the roof would be collected in the rainy season and used for toilets and lawn watering, etc. in the summer. The cistern would take up no

more area than the driveway or parking area and would be underneath; no area of the property is wasted and a water-saving cistern which should hold no less than 60,000 litres is in place. This would allow lawn watering of four hours a week for 10 weeks even with no summer rain. The cost is approximately $300 for 24,000 gallons of water from municipal sources (including sewer rate) but running water from the cistern would only cost $4.08 using a onehp pump. Problem for a long-term solution solved, with just a little money that can be financed and the city should give a 25 per cent cut on water rates to those with the system. Ken Watson

A man who was arrested in Abbotsford last September as a suspect in a U.S. homicide has been denied bail for the second time. Kevin Patterson sought bail while awaiting a decision by the Minister of Justice on whether to extradite him to the U.S. on charges of murder and theft. He was first denied bail in B.C. Supreme Court in February, and applied for an appeal, which was dismissed on Monday. The Court of Appeal judge upheld the earlier decision, saying that Patterson is a flight risk, has a criminal history and is alleged to have committed a violent offence. Patterson, 21, and coaccused Christopher Shade, 19, were arrested at a hotel in Abbotsford last September.

It is alleged that the pair used shovels to bludgeon to death Patterson’s roommate Richard Bergesen, 57, who was found dead in his Sammamish, Wash., home on Sept. 17. The pair then allegedly stole the victim’s credit cards and 2013 BMW 328 sedan and fled to Canada, driving under a barbed wire fence on a road north of Spokane. Patterson and Shade then allegedly used the stolen credit cards to go on a shopping spree in Abbotsford and host a party at a local hotel. They were arrested later that day at the hotel after U.S. authorities tracked the BMW from the vehicle’s GPS device. Court documents indicate that Patterson was homeless at the time he met Bergesen, a manager at Boeing, through a church pastor. Bergesen offerered Patterson – born in Canada and adopted by a couple who later moved to Washington State – a place to stay about a year before his murder and helped him to take positive steps in his life, according to the documents. Shade, a U.S. citizen, was moved back to the U.S. two months after his arrest, but Patterson, who has dual U.S.Canadian citizenship, has remained in B.C. In upholding the first decision, Justice Pamela Kirkpatrick said Patterson has a substantial criminal record that includes convictions for criminal trespass, assault, custodial assault, theft, forgery and identity theft.

Lowest residential red tape

A11

Fraser Institute says Abbotsford has lowest compliance costs Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

Abbotsford is one of the easiest places to build homes, according to a Fraser Institute survey of Lower Mainland cities’ residential land-use regulations and policies. Abbotsford was the least regulated of the 10 cities in the region that generated sufficient survey responses, according to the Fraser Institute, a think tank that promotes free-market policies. Compliance costs and fees added up to an average of $14,357 per home in Abbotsford. That figure is the lowest in the Lower Mainland and compares to a high of $40,000 per home in the District of North Vancouver, which was labelled the most-regulated municipality. The survey found that while Abbotsford’s average approval timeline of 11.1 months for proposed homes was similar to other cities, developers

ranked the city as the least obstructionist of the 10 municipalities with the most responses. The survey also found that most residential developments in the region require rezoning, and that Abbotsford is no exception, with 72 per cent of proposals needing alterations to zoning bylaws. When rezoning is needed, it takes slightly less time than average to go through the process in Abbotsford. Survey respondents were also asked how the development process was affected by council and community groups. They reported Abbotsford was relatively open to new building, ranking it fourth out of 10 communities, with a rating of 2.29 out of five, where a lower rating is more encouraging to development. The results came from a questionnaire sent to industry associations last fall. Data was obtained from 43 anonymous respondents, most of whom specialize in multi-unit developments.

Car thieves driving crime rate ‘Seasoned’ bad guys find ways to elude cops Jeff NAGEL Black Press

7/15F_SC24

Car thefts surged 29 per cent across B.C. last year – reversing a decade-long decline – and that was one of the factors behind a significant increase in the overall crime rate in the Lower Mainland. The crime rate was up eight per cent in 2014 in Metro Vancouver and seven per cent in the Abbotsford-Mission census metropolitan area, according to Statistics Canada. In addition to auto theft, B.C. also saw increases in thefts under $5,000, break-and-enters, and child pornography.

The property crimes and car thefts are often linked, according to Insp. Peter Jadis, officer in charge of the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT). “The people that we’re dealing with are seasoned criminals,” Jadis said. “Usually when we do apprehend them there’s evidence of other crimes being committed – identify theft, fraud, drug dealing – and they’re using the vehicles for transportation and to facilitate these different crimes.” Jadis said Canada Post’s investigators believe many mail box

break-ins are done via stolen cars, which are often found with stolen mail inside. He said the perpetrators are often better organized than would appear from Bait Car videos of the past, depicting unhinged thieves just prior to arrest. “They’ll hit mailboxes multiple times and build profiles,” Jadis said of identity thieves. “Your mail will be stolen for a few weeks and then a year down the road all of a sudden there’s a new identity that someone’s using and people see their credit ratings have gone through the floor.” Last year’s spike in car

thefts followed a decline from 2003 to 2013 due to a combination of better car security technology, intelligence-led policing, the tracking of prolific criminals and the use of the Bait Car program to catch thieves in the act. The recent resurgence of the problem has continued this year, with a 40 per cent increase in arrests so far for theft of or theft from vehicles, Jadis said. Part of the problem is that criminals have been adjusting their tactics to thwart police, often ditching stolen vehicles faster. “We’re seeing offenders rotating the vehicle a bit more. In the past they’d keep them 10 to 14 days, but we’re seeing some of them now rotating the vehicles every three or four days.” Thieves are increasingly stealing cars by first stealing their keys. Keys can disappear from your clothes in a locker at a gym or rec centre, or from inside your house, Jadis said. Often, he said, a thief will break into a vehicle that has a garage door opener, use it to get into the home, then search for a spare pair of car keys, along with anything else that can be stolen. Or, if the car is stolen elsewhere, they can use the insurance papers to get the address and use the garage door opener to enter and loot the home. Jadis said IMPACT officers are developing a new model to strategically target suspects known to them who are likely to be involved in auto crime. While car thefts and other property crime climbed in 2014, violent crime fell eight per cent in B.C., according to new national statistics. That was despite 88 homicides across the province, a 15 per cent increase.

UFV researcher awarded $100k grant for research A University of the Fraser Valley chemist has received a federal research grant for his hightech exploration of the hidden processes that shape our world. Noham Weinberg will get $100,000 over five years for work on theoretical studies of chemical systems and reactions at high pressure. Weinberg runs UFV’s Molecular Modeling Lab, where he and students use computers to carry out simulated experiments, which are then evaluated using sophisticated software. Weinberg, who was the recipient of UFV’s 2013 Research Excellence Award, earned the grant through a competition for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council’s Discovery Grants Program. That program funds research in a range of science disciplines and aims to build research capacity in Canada. “This project, like so many others at UFV, takes our faculty and their students into the frontiers of their discipline. What better way to teach critical thinking and problem-solving skills and to make a difference in the lives we serve,” said UFV president Mark Evered in a news release.

Legion distributes funds

Two concerts in park Aug. 1 Let loose with the upbeat, summery energy of two local acts on Saturday, Aug. 1: Joel Willoughby will play from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and Midnight Lions from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Mill Lake (2387 Ware St.). Pop singer-songwriter Joel Willoughby’s melodies are sunshine-smooth, inspired by and infused with his myriad life experiences as part of a family of world-travellers. His music has been featured on the TV show Heartland, and he

has released multiple EPs that include both covers and original songs. Midnight Lions incorporates voice, feel, and energy into a rocking yet harmonious sound with a cohesive four-piece band: Alison May on keys, Simon Menard on guitar, Brandon Clark with a thunderous bass, and Conor Barclay on drums. The Lions’ blend of vocals, guitar, and keyboard riffs into upbeat rhythms are sure to please. For more information visit abbotsfordartscouncil.org.

Poppies raise record $60,000 in 2014 The Abbotsford branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has been busy distributing the record $60,000 raised in the 2014 Poppy Fund Campaign. Funds raised in November go to a variety of Legionsponsored programs, including bursaries to the children or grandchildren of Canadian Forces veterans.

The bursaries are distributed based on a needs scale established by Legion rules for the Poppy Fund. Among the recent recipients is Jessica Locke, who will enter her second year of nursing studies at University of the Fraser Valley this September. Also through the Legion, several Second World War and Korean War veterans and/ or their widows have received assistance – such as extra support for home and health needs – due to their changing needs caused by aging. MADD bench message MADD Abbotsford Community will work with the Abbotsford Police Department and the City of Abbotsford to promote having a safe summer and not driving impaired. The city recently installed a memorial bench for the MADD Abbotsford Community at Rotary Stadium. The purpose of the bench engraving is to promote the message of not driving impaired, and serve as a place to remember and pay tribute to those who have lost friends and family from impaired drivers. “MADD Abbotsford Community wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable summer,” said MADD Abbotsford community leader Danielle Edwards, “We ask that you have a transportation plan in place if you are going out and will be consuming alcohol.” Plan ahead: have a designated driver, call a friend or family member, take public transportation, or call a taxi at: #TAXI (8294). Do not put yourself in danger by getting into a vehicle with an impaired driver. Impaired driving injuries and deaths are 100 per cent preventable and continue to occur. On average, four Canadians are killed and 175 are injured every day in Canada by impairment-related crashes. Approximately 65,000 Canadians are impacted by impaired drivers annually. MADD Canada and its many Chapters and Communities works to stop impaired driving and to support victims/survivors.

Jerodico steals the show

Abbotsford News

Mervin Jerodico stole the show at the Abbotsford Whalers’ annual swim meet at Centennial Pool this past weekend. The Division 4 swimmer went on to secure four golds while achieving personal bests. “Mervin was definitely the standout of the swim meet,” said coach Bill Murray. “He was knocking one or two seconds off personal best times. “To be consistently getting better at that pace in Div. 4 is rare. It’s usually just a tenth of a second or so,” said Murray, adding that Jerodico is well-deserved of the success as the middle school student is humble but extremely hardworking. Jerodico won the 100-metre freestyle and backstroke events, and 50-metre freestyle and butterfly events. Jerodico’s sister Mary Rose along with Fallon Quast and Amy Connorton were also notable performers at the pool as each took home gold in the four events they participated in. Mary Rose (Div. 2) won the 100m individual medley (IM), 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle events. Quast (Div. 5) won the 200m IM, 100m butterfly, 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle events, while Connorton (Div. 4) took gold in the 200m IM, 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 50m butterfly events. “The four have been quite consistent throughout the year, usually winning their events,” Murray said. The Whalers dominated their home meet, medalling in over 90 per cent of events. There were 130 Whalers swimmers with upwards of 400 swimmers in total at the meet. The junior swimmers performed well, with many improving on personal bests, Murray said. He added that the club’s swimmers, in general, have seen almost double the amount of personal best times registered throughout the year. “It’s a big transition year for the club as well, with a new executive and coaching staff,” said Murray. The Whalers will now look to regionals, which run Aug. 7 to 9 at Centennial Outdoor Pool in Abbotsford.

Hammer throwers eye gold at national championships Brandon KOSTINUK Abbotsford News

Two Abbotsford athletes enter this year’s national youth track and field championships ranked as the top two in their division. Valley Royals teammates Vikramjit Gondara and Jayden Driver will be heading to the 2015 National Youth Track & Field Championships ranked one and two, respectively, in the Canadian youth hammer throw category. Both were named to the 2015 BC/Yukon Command Legion Team last week. Coming from the same city and the same school — W.J. Mouat — and training under the same Royals coach, Harold Willers, there’s a degree of rivalry. But according to Willers, not so much that there’s any detriment. “They have both come a long way. Gondara has been throwing with the Royals for about three years … while Driver started late last year,” said Willers, who won’t be joining the boys in St. Therese, Que. Gondara told The News he feels pretty good, and is excited about the opportunity ahead. “This is my first time going to Quebec. I’m not really nervous.” Confidence is easy to come by for the Abbotsford native as he has been accumulating gold medals while tallying recordbreaking tosses since entering the track and field scene just a few years ago. In 2012, he secured three gold medal finishes at the B.C. Junior development champi-

onships in the 13-yearold boys division. One was for the hammer throw, which he threw nearly 10 metres further than his secondplace counterpart. The other two were in the discus and shot put events. Gondara then shattered the meet record in the U16 boys hammer throw in the 2014 Canadian Legion Youth Track and Field Championships when he notched a 59.44metre toss, 5.5 metres farther than the previous record. He then followed up those feats with two

top-place finishes in the hammer throw and discus contests at the 2014 BC Summer Games in Nanaimo. On Gondara’s heels is teammate Driver, who said there’s definitely a friendly rivalry between them. “He’s beating me now, but I plan on beating him for Legions.” Driver said he’s been making personal bests in practice. “I’ve been training non-stop for two years. I’m feeling pretty confident. I think I’m going to do really well.” At last year’s B.C. high school track and

field championships, Driver picked up gold in the hammer and discus events, and managed bronze in the shot put. The Mouat student said he recognizes Gondara is likely to be his toughest competition, but can’t wait to trade throws with his Valley teammate. Also competing out of the Royals camp is Chilliwack’s Rowan Hamilton. He enters as the No. 1-ranked hammer throw for the midget division. The national youth championships run Aug. 7 to 9.

Top-ten finish for Hadwin at RBC Canadian Open

Brandon KOSTINUK

Abbotsford News

Local PGA Tour pro Adam Hadwin posted a top-ten finish at Canada’s largest golf event over the weekend. Hadwin finished 12under, five shots back

of the lead at the 2015 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club. Hadwin was still in the mix of front-runners on the last day of the tour-

nament, but faltered down the stretch. “Getting off to a start like that, I thought today could be something special,” Hadwin told

the Toronto Sun on Sunday. “I felt in the right frame of mind. I was hitting the shots early and then kind of got derailed on seven and eight.” Hadwin was five under through his first six holes Sunday to move him to 13-under. However, the 27-yearold then went on to bogey his next two holes, and was up and down over the back nine, birdying four holes, parring three, and posting a bogey and double-bogey on holes 12 and 14 to land at four-under on the day and 12-under for the tournament. Australia’s Jason Day earned top honours and finished at 17-under. Hadwin’s best rounds of golf came in the second and third day of play, where he finished at 67. The Abbotsford native collected a little over $174,000 in winnings and was the secondhighest finisher among Canadian golfers, behind Ontario’s David Hearn who finished third overall. Nick Taylor, meanwhile, made the cut, and finished the tournament at five-under, which was good for 56th place. He took home just over $13,000. Both golfers are back in action this weekend at the QuickenLoans National in Virginia.

First round finish The Abbotsford Cardinals’ post-season run came to an abrupt halt on Saturday. Facing the regular season champions North Shore Twins in the opening round of the B.C. Premier Baseball League in a best-of-three series, Abbotsford were unable to score, losing 7-0 and 5-0 in games one and two.
