Following the success of a program that has kept five aspiring firefighters busy gaining experience for nine months, Creston Fire Rescue is seeking new candidates for the coming year. “Having five people on call 24-hours-a-day as part of our firefighting crew has worked really well,” Mayor Ron Toyota said on Monday. “At the same time that they are gaining valuable experience as they pursue their chosen
career, these men and women have helped make our community safer and contributed significantly to our team of volunteers.” Under the supervision of fire Chief Mike Moore, the work experience program (WEP) participants have lived in a building adjacent to the fire hall for a year. “Daily duties of the WEP firefighter is balanced between, but not limited to, fire suppression, technical rescue, medical response, fire prevention, public education, company fire inspections, preplanning, maintenance duties of equipment

Former resident’s novel targets young readers BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Former Creston resident Dennis Staginnus has published his first novel, The Eye of Odin, which targets a middle-grade audience of young readers. Staginnus, who graduated from Prince Charles Secondary School in 1991, has taken a patient route to becoming an author. After graduating, he earned a bachelor of arts degree in history — “There’s not much you can do with that!” — and then went on to add a bachelor of education to his resume. More recently, he has earned a master’s degree in leadership and administration.
Dennis Staginnus and the cover of his first novel, The Eye of Odin.
Staginnus is well positioned to know what books will appeal to students. He works in Kamloops as a teacher-librarian. He began writing in his early twenties “when I saw Jurassic Park and learned about Michael Crichton.” In The Eye of Odin, the first in a planned five-book series called The Raiders of Folklore, the protagonist is a 15-year-old thief whose latest heist involves stealing an ancient Viking relic from a museum in Vancouver. Grayle Rowen teams up with classmate Sarah Finn, and learns the hard way that witches exist and that Viking goddesses are not to be trifled with. “Together, Grayle and Sarah learn the Viking artifact is a marker describing the whereabouts of the Eye of Odin, a mystical orb that allows its owner to see into the past, present, and future,” Staginnus said on a recent visit to Creston, where is mom and dad, Kristen and Udo, still live. “Now they must find the other markers in time before Hel, the Viking goddess of death, uses the Eye to destroy mankind.” “My primary goal is to get young males to read,” he said. “The Eye of Odin evolved over a four-year period of writing. It was originally a lot longer than this.” He settled on a plan for a five-book series, which allows him to keep the novels to about 60,000 words “and to be affordable for nine- to fifteen-year-olds.” Staginnus plans for each successive book in the series to have a slightly more mature style, to reflect his readers’ increasing maturity as they read the stories. He hopes to produce a book a year until the series is complete. “The Eye of Odin has been well received in the Kamloops area,” he said. “It sold 140 copies in the Kamloops Chapters store, which made it an in-store bestseller.”
The book was also a selection in the Kamloops Battle of the Books, which targets Grade 7 readers. Interviews on Kamloops television and CBC Radio have helped to get the word out. While the book is set in a world that is at the same time real and a fantasy, and sees its characters travel to Norway, the plot covers an action-packed and tension-filled two-day period. “I wrote the story to keep young teen readers’
interest up, focusing on action rather than description,” he said. Readers can get some background to The Eye of Odin online by delving into Double Cross and Fated, two 10-12,000-word prequels that help set up the series. They are
available only online. Dennis Staginnus’s first novel can be purchased by ordering through Chapters, and it can be found in ebook form at Amazon.com and other vendors. For more information, visit the author’s website, www.dennisstaginnus.com.

Public Hearing
Tuesday, August 11, 2015 4:00pm Council Chambers 238 - 10th Avenue North
What is Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 1825, 2015 about? The intent of this Bylaw is to amend Zoning Bylaw No. 1123 to include Single Family Dwelling, currently in existence and Multi Family Residential, currently in existence, as permitted uses within the Highway Service Commercial (HSC) Zone, subject to all legal requirements. the future of young citizens in our community while reducing skill shortages.” The program opens up a range of opportunities for youth, who will learn or improve communication and conflict resolution skills, earn specialized training certificates — first aid or the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, for example — and gain work experience with local trades, education and insurance employers. Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks was in Creston on July 13 to make the announcement on behalf of Employment

We are proud to work with organizations like Kootenay Employment Services Society so young people, including those in Creston, can develop the skills they need to succeed in the job market.”

New Temple of Light rising from ashes BY WILL JOHNSON Nelson Star Over a year after the Temple of Light at Yashodhara Ashram on Kootenay Lake’s East Shore was destroyed by fire, work on its replacement is well underway. “It’s happening! Like a phoenix arising from the ashes, the new temple is now
taking shape,” said Swami Lalitananda in an email update to the community. “It’s exciting to present this first public unveiling of the conceptual design. “The new temple is refreshingly innovative yet holds true to Swami Radha’s original vision. It is a sacred space built to let light in and to send light out into the world through healing
vibrations and prayers.” The new temple is designed by Patkau Architects, and the concept incorporates essential symbolic and historical elements. “The new design moves beyond a geometrical form,” Lalitananda said. “The building is an organic collection of windows and panels that come together to

create a luminous inner space. Patkau’s intent was always to use light as a ‘primary building material’. They accomplished this by creating portals of light that extend from the foundation to the oculus.” Light will enter the building from every angle. The ashram has introduced a new website dedicated to the project at temple.yashodhara. org. Pictures, videos and conceptual designs are posted there. The current goal is to complete the new Temple of Light by the end of 2016. “This is a unique and ambitious project that will span two years of planning and building,” Lalitananda said. “We are currently estimating a total cost of $2 million.” The ashram is looking for donations. The old temple, which burned down in June 2014, was completed in 1992 based on the vision of the ashram’s founder, the late Swami Sivananda Radha. The ashram, a yoga retreat and study center, was founded on Walker’s Landing Road in Kootenay Bay in 1963. The temple’s foundation was laid two years later, but it took until the late 1980s for work to begin.

Buying votes, making news
What is the price of winning an election? Steep, if the ultra-busy summer by the Conservative government and its MPs is an indication. The Harper government, which lays claim to fiscal responsibility, has been giving money away like it has developed an allergy to the plastic in the new currency. Or at least the prime minister, cabinet ministers and members of parliament would have us believe they have suddenly discovered the need to put billions of taxpayers’ dollars back into their pockets. In one of the boldest and brazen moves in my political memory, about $3 billion was mailed out or deposited to the accounts of parents last week, purportedly to help with the cost of child care. Can a thousand bucks (for parents of two preschoolers) buy a vote? Time will tell. But if it can, it will be the vote of a person with a spectacularly short memory. Keep in mind that this is the same government that knocked off the Child Tax Credit not so long ago, putting parents deeper into the hole at the time. And now, suddenly, about 100 days from a federal election, the Conservatives are spending like Santa and ignoring that fact that they have been saving like Scrooge, all at the expense of the families for which Team Harper expresses such great fondness. It’s hard to find fault with the folks who got the money (and who will get monthly payments in the future), but if they think they are coming out ahead on the deal they might think about auditing their kids’ math classes. After losing the Child Tax Credit and then paying taxes (the bill will come long after the election) on the new largesse,
they won’t be much further ahead than they were a few years ago. Meanwhile, Conservative MPs having been putting miles on their vehicles in what is usually the quiet summer period, presenting cheques for projects and even
Lorne Eckersley elbowing their way into photo ops for money that has already been spent. Personally, I’d be embarrassed by the whole thing, but then my job doesn’t involve ruining a country and claiming it’s for our own good. As pathetic as last week’s votebuying scheme was, I was equally offended by another bit of news that barely made a blip in the media. Federal bureaucrats and media flacks were instructed to produce three press releases each week that focused on the theme of terrorism. A frightened electorate is less likely to vote for change, and terrorism is almost as frightening as the way this government runs our country. When the directive was made public, Harper’s response was as predictable as it was facetious. We will not apologize to Canadians for making them aware of the threats we face from terrorists, he said. I was reminded of a class back when I was studying journalism.
We learned of the infamous coverage provided by American newspapers in the late 1800s, when papers owned by William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer made up stories in an effort to shape public support for a war against Spain over its involvement in Cuba. The story goes that a reporter sent to Cuba telegrammed Hearst saying that all was quiet and that “there will be no war.” Hearst was long reputed to have replied, “You furnish the pictures and I’ll furnish the war.” That particularly incident might have been apocryphal, but it serves as a fair illustration about how Hearst newspapers operated in those days. With the concentration of national media today the reporting of news is easily manipulated, and there is no reason to believe that Conservative-leaning newspapers, radio and television won’t delight in running with governmentreported news releases about terrorist threats. Under Harper’s leadership, federal policing has largely moved its focus from crime to the supposed threats of terrorism, in large part because the latter keeps the population uneasy and fearful. Uncle Steve, much like Uncle Sam, is watching over us and protecting our best interests, the Conservatives would have us believe. Hogwash, I say. But this Hearst/ Karl Rove-like approach worked to perfection in electing and keeping George W. Bush in office for eight years and it’s hardly surprising that the prime minister has bought into the program. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

Use less water, but keep park lawn green To the Editor: With the water shortage, I agree with stopping watering the town’s large acres of park lawns. But I take exception to stopping watering the small lawn area in Millennium Park. The lawn area is so small that it would take less than one thousandth of our water supply. The promise of all green lawns again in the fall will not happen where there is foot traffic because this damages the grass. Consider also that spot treatment of new grass in Millennium Park will be messy and costly. I am asking the town to at least keep the grass alive. Also, we received a gift from our Japanese sister city for part of the park, so we should be very embarrassed if any Japanese from that sister city came visiting and saw our small appreciation. Personally, I would like to see it lush green so all us Crestonites with brownish white lawns would have a place to enjoy a picnic. Also, it would be beautiful for all the wedding pictures. We should make an appeal for those who take showers to run less water — that is, to wet the body, then stop the water for the soap application, and then rinse. For those with toilets having room for a one-litre glass jar in their toilet tank, fill one and place it in the tank. Each flush saves a litre. It would save two to four gallons per house and a possible 5,000 to 8,000 gallons a day. I encourage the people to talk about the many ways to save water when at work or social gatherings. Let us be aware that in places in the world with a yearlong shortage of water, they use less than half of what we normally use. John Jorgensen Creston

would be sold off overseas in a locked-in no-guaranteed-future 25-year sale, with no guarantee for jobs (mostly offshore) or increase in royalties for the next 25 years to account for fluctuating prices and adjustment to increasing climate change. In this period of drought, there was also a million-litre giveaway of another precious resource, our water, to multinational conglomerates for pennies for a million litres while the rest of us were urged to conserve water by contemplating whether or not to flush our toilets. The minister had an Orwellian explanation for this bizarre outrage, saying that if they increased the rates it would indicate that B.C. water was for sale. This was not a water sale, it was an access fee, and so had to remain at the ludicrously low rate. Lorne went on to talk about the Greek bankster take over. They too, should be aware of the European Union (EU) banksters bringing gifts. This was the Trojan horse to enslave and put the population into penury while they continued to fill World Bank coffers, at the expense of the suffering populace, including the privatization and sale of their public resources. My advice would be to reject the EU salvage and let the banks go bankrupt, as Iceland did — let the banksters swallow their own well-oiled petards and solve their own problems. They are the ones looking for a bailout. Iceland seems to be doing well with a rising employment rate and a gradual payoff of its deficit. Former World Bank senior attorney Karen Hudes weighed in on the “Grexit” no-go. She said, “This whole business about Greece owing the money is a scam!” She said all of the people in all of the countries need to stand up and call this scam for what it is — and the truth is that the paper money always fails. She said that we need to cut these bankster “creeps out of our pockets”! Larry Ewashen Creston
Weed control EU lending a by town crew Trojan Horse turned into to Greek overkill populace To the Editor: Lorne Eckersley’s July 9 column sure had me fooled. Called “Location, Location, Location”, he began to describe a pristine prize real estate undergoing a ruthless sale to the banksters. I was sure he was going to describe the crusty Liberals’ selloff of various B.C. resources, which rightly belong to the populace, but in this case

To the Editor: I know that common courtesy is not common in today’s world, but surely we can’t overlook respect of people’s property. My husband and I have always placed a feeling of pride in our property, including keeping our yard attractive with flowers, which we plant each year. We are not so sure what we will do next year. For the last two years, we have welcomed visitors, and each time they called the town to complain about the abundance of weeds grow-

ing between Highway 3 and Crawford Hill, the problem being the height of these unsightly growths obstructing a clear view of the highway from Crawford Hill. Eventually, a crew from the Town of Creston arrived to cut the weeds on both sides of the street and then they put weed killer on both sides; one side is the boulevard, the other has a sidewalk with a three-foot retaining wall, which also was put in by the town. What resulted by this obvious case of overkill was that the weed killer wiped out most of my flowers that have been growing there for almost two years. The dead weeds were left on the road, which would result in them either washing into the storm drains; this too is unthinkable. Now in my world, the town should have used leaf blowers remove the debris. Instead, the neighbor who helped plant the flowers was forced to call the town to complain. A week later, a street cleaning machine arrived to clean up the street. Clearly this wasn’t done for nothing so who has to pay for it? This already poor taxpayer feels that our high taxes are enough without adding to the total. The destruction of our flowers feels like an act of vandalism but who will take responsibility for this inappropriate and irresponsible action? Courtesy has been forgotten here and if it sounds like community pride is being stifled at the same time. Somehow it just doesn’t digest well. Leanne Boire Creston

Coming election leads to photo ops To the Editor: (Re: “Grant will Upgrade Arrow Creek System”, July 16) How nice it was to see “our” MP David Wilks grace the Creston Valley with his presence. And bringing cash, no less! Could this be yet another reason that elections should be held more frequently? Our government has had many years of opportunity to be investing in infrastructure. Suddenly, our fearless leaders are worried and cheques start coming, and we actually get to see our MP, at least in a photo op. It’s a shame. As memory serves, I thought Mr. Wilks once had some potential when he spoke against Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s first gigantic omnibus bill, and what that signified for democracy. He was quickly muzzled, of course, and he now even refuses to participate in debates in his own riding. One can only assume that the citizens of his riding are not important enough to bring Mr. Harper to any debate, so that Mr. Wilks would know what to say. Rob McDougall Creston

We continue to work at the College of the Rockies gardens harvesting produce that the greenhouse staff shares with local organizations, such as the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors. Our garden in the community garden plot supplies produce for lunches at Cresteramics. This activity is supported by a longtime staff member who seems to really enjoy being outside with the members. Activities continue at our site on Railway Boulevard, our store on Canyon Street, at our job sites through the com-

Did drugs, alcohol or mental health problems come first?
When mental health issues arise among teenagers, parents often wonder: Did alcohol or drugs cause this? Or did a preexisting mental health issue cause the substance use?
substance use show up together, it is called a “concurrent disorder”, and it is particularly challenging to treat because both issues must be explored and treated at the same time. Sometimes the two are very closely entwined; sometimes they just exist together. Why do the two issues so often occur together? One reason is that the risk factors underlying both the Dr. David Smith mental health condition and the subSubstance use and mental stance use issue are similar and health problems often go hand- may include a genetic predisin-hand. In fact, surveys show position, family history or any that 33 per cent of youth with a of a series of common life diagnosed mental health condi- stressors, such as a past experition also have a substance use ence of loss, trauma, abuse or issue. mental health concerns like depression, paranoia or hallucinations that may clear up once the substance use is stopped. Another reason is self-medication. Sometimes a teenager begins to use substances because he or she finds it provides temporary relief from uncomfortable or disconcerting symptoms. They may feel using the substance helps relieve anxiety, tension or depression. For a time it reduces psychological or physical suffering or makes them feel better. When selfmedication is occurring, there is a greater risk of long-term dependence because the youth truly feels the substance is helping them cope. Alcohol and marijuana (or cannabis) are the substances most used by B.C. teenagers. We now know that adolescent brains, particularly the critical frontal lobes, are not completely developed until about age 25. Youth brains are not just immature versions of adult brains, they also appear to be more vulnerable to substance use in ways that adult brains are not. It seems that the younger the start, the higher the risk. The older youth are when they started using alcohol or marijuana, the less likely they are to be current users or to engage in risky behaviours such as mixing different types of alcohol, drinking at high risk levels, using drugs such as amphetamines or crystal meth, or to have injected drugs.

Youth FROM PAGE 8
Fortunately, results from the 2013 Adolescent Health Survey found that more B.C. students are waiting to try alcohol and/ or cannabis until after they are at least 15 or older. But the 2013 survey also found that 75 per cent of youth 16 to 18 had tried alcohol and 46 per cent had tried marijuana. While most youth do not develop long-term addictions or mental health issues, substance use alone comes with significant risks to their health and wellness. Binge drinking, alcohol poisoning, driving while intoxicated, unprotected sex and

injuries are all risks that arise from substance use, independent of any mental health concerns. Protective factors against using either drugs or alcohol include good supervision from caring adults, strong connections to school, a positive peer group, involvement in extracurricular activities, and positive self-esteem and attitudes. In recent years, concerns have been raised about the role heavy marijuana use can have in the onset of psychosis (hallucinations and delusions) and even schizophrenia. In the 2002 Dunedin study (U.K.) researchers found that cannabis use in adolescence significantly increased the odds of developing schizophrenia in

For more information about concurrent disorders, visit mindcheck.ca, camh.ca or kelthymentalhealth.ca And talk to your children from early ages about the importance of avoiding the use of any substances to protect their brain health. Dr. Carol-Ann Saari, medical director of the BC Youth Concurrent Disorder Clinic at BC Children’s Hospital notes, “The longer youth can let their brains develop without exposure to drugs, the healthier their brains will be.” Dr. David Smith is an adolescent and adult psychiatrist and the medi-

More research on this link will be forthcoming, but we do know that stopping cannabis use is the first essential step to getting the psychosis and schizophrenia under control. If you suspect that drugs or alcohol may be a problem with your child and may be contributing to a mental health problem, see your family doctor. The doctor may decide to refer you to the Child and Youth Mental Health Services in your community or to the Provincial Youth Concurrent Disorders Program at BC Children’s Hospital. This series of columns on common child and youth mental health issues is a project of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substances Use Collaborative. The Collaborative involves multiple individuals, organizations and ministries all working together to increase the number of children, youth, and their families receiving timely access to mental health services and support in the Interior Health and Vancouver Island regions. The Collaborative is jointly funded by Doctors of BC and the government of BC.

Creston cadet spends three weeks at Comox flying centre COMOX CADET FLYING TRAINING CENTRE
Sgt. Jarred Lalande from Royal Canadian Air Cadets 904 Kootenai Squadron in Creston had a blast this summer in Comox as part of the three week advanced aviation course at the Comox Cadet Flying Training Centre. “Taking this course means I have a better chance at applying for the glider pilot scholarship or even the power pilot scholarship courses later on in my cadet career,” said the 15-year-old Lalande. “The advanced aviation course is a course designed to prepare air cadets for future flight training,” said Lt. Kesar Nizzar, assistant flight commander for the advanced aviation course. “This course takes a more advanced approach to aviation and prepares cadets for instruction. Classroom instruction reviews the following subjects:

principles of flight, propulsion, meteorology and navigation.” When he is not at camp, Lalande enjoys flying with neighbours, playing video games and hanging out with his friends from Prince Charles Secondary School. “Anyone who is not in cadets and who is over 12 years old should join cadets,” he said. “You could be out here doing new things, and meeting new friends. In cadets you can take part in many activities like I do, such as drill team, band, gliding, teaching, first aid and so much more.” More than 3,400 sea, army and air cadets are participating in summer training activities across B.C. this summer. Other cadets have had the opportunity to travel across the country and even overseas. To find out more about Flight Sgt. Nicole Tupy the cadet program, visit www. cadets.ca or follow @BC_Cadets Sgt. Making own choices important, say valedictorians
Kieran Simpson (left) and Jayden Gigliotti were the 2014-2015 Prince Charles Secondary School valedictorians.
Prince Charles Secondary School (PCSS) 2014-2015 valedictorians Kieran Simpson and Jayden Gigliotti delivered this speech at the June graduation ceremony: Kieran Simpson: Good evening ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming. I am Kieran Simpson. Jayden Gigliotti: I am Jayden Gigliotti. Kieran: We are the valedictorians for the Prince Charles Secondary School graduating class of 2015. Jayden: Getting to this moment has had its challenges, for some more than others. We would like to give a big thank you to all of the staff at PCSS, our elementary school teachers, our families and our friends. Without you, many of us wouldn’t be here today. It is with your gracious support we have succeeded and reached this point; again, thank you. Kieran: Now, we speak directly to the grad class of 2015. Congratulations! We did it! It is with great honour that we stand among you this evening. We thank you for entrusting us to represent you. Jayden: We begin by quoting an American business investor, the founder and CEO of Dell Inc., Michael Dell: “As you start your journey, the first thing you should do is throw away that store-bought map and begin to draw your own.” High school… is this store-bought map. (Holds up map) Kieran: For the most part, we’ve all followed the same route thus far, from point A to B making stops to gas up and refuel here and there (points at different stops on map) depending on what kind of vehicle we had and what was left in the tank, stopping at rest stops because sometimes the road gets a little rocky, and taking a break to relax, refresh and regain our composure is sometimes all we need to get right back out there again. Jayden: For others, missing exit lanes, getting caught in traffic, ignoring the caution signs and failing to yield resulted in ending up in unfamiliar and uncharted places, lost, unsure of what to do next. When sometimes, all you need to do is ask someone for directions. Kieran: Sometimes, once you admit you’re lost, help seems to find you. Some kind person directs you, and helps get you back on the right track, this time, ensuring you hit the right exit lane. Everyone gets lost at least once in his or her journey, although not everyone will admit it. Some of us get lost a lot… It helps build character. But for those of us whose sense of direction is somewhat misguided, find hope that there will always be yet another road to take. Jayden: For most, that is how the trip goes, we get lost once, maybe twice, and then we really focus. We know we cannot afford to make more mistakes, so we follow the correct route the rest of the way. Others unfortunately find themselves lost one too many times. Their journey may have been filled with potholes, detours and roadblocks. For them, the journey of 1,000 miles simply begins with a single step and they will eventually reach their own destination. Being derailed from time to time should
teach us to keep our heads up and to not lose focus. Kieran: Regardless of our individual journeys, we are here tonight. We have converged at our planned destination, graduation! (Points to map) Jayden: We can now throw out these maps. We’ve gotten to our first major destination and have no use for these worn out, storebought maps, unless of course we want them as keepsakes. (Crumples up old map and pulls out new blank pages) Kieran: This is what we have in front of us now. No starting point, and no end point. For some this can be rather intimidating. How do we know where to start? Is there a right spot to start? A wrong spot? The answer is no. The beauty of these maps is that you get to make them yourselves. Jayden: This includes starting where you want and ending up where you desire. However, these maps will never be anything like the store-bought ones. Change is inevitable. We all knew deep down that one day we would graduate, and we’d be given a clean page to begin a new journey of our very own. Kieran: We’ve all been anxiously waiting for this, some of us with excitement, others with trepidation. Not because we are leaving high school, but because we are leaving the familiarities and routine of our everyday lives behind. Soon, we will need to develop new routines, and establish new and comfortable familiarities. This is why some of us may be excited, while others concerned. No matter what we do after this, it will be different. Our lives will change. Jayden: We are here to tell you that no matter how you’re feeling, try to embrace this change. Change isn’t always a bad thing. This change is going to allow us to place ourselves in a setting we want to be in and feel comfortable in. It will allow us to do what we want, and go where we want to go. We choose our place. Kieran: Now, what we aren’t here to do is to get your hopes up. We aren’t here to tell you, “As we stand here before you we see future doctors, lawyers, surgeons or the next prime minister.” Because odds are that most of you don’t even want to be any of those things. What we are here to tell you, class of 2015, is that you get to choose what you want to do. Choose what you want to be. The possibilities are endless! You do with your lives what you please, and in a number of years, who knows? We may all be success stories. Jayden: So as we stand before you, both of us with these blank pages, we would like to show you how easy it really is to start this new map and continue onto another major part of our life journey. (Both put a mark on blank pages) Kieran: Good luck to all our fellow grads, in whatever you do next year, the next five years or even the next 30 years. Remember that if you find you don’t necessarily like where you’re at, you’re making this map yourself — simply draw on a new route and get to where you want to be. Congratulations, class of 2015! Thank you.

Selkirk College graduate Chelsea Mainwaring (left), with Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, had a small role in ‘Hardhome’, an epic episode in the most recent season of Game of Thrones.

Selkirk grad on small screen in Game of Thrones BY WILL JOHNSON Nelson Star
If you watch closely, there’s a moment in the recent Game of Thrones episode “Hardhome” in which Kit Harington’s Jon Snow grabs Selkirk College graduate Chelsea Mainwaring by the arm and sends her fleeing from an apocalyptic force of undead wights zombie-tumbling down a nearby cliff. “I’m sick and dying there, and Karsi—the head of the wildlings, she’s a chief—she comes through the crowd to rescue people and finds me. I’m flailing all over the place, and Jon Snow has his arm on me as we huddle together, then she takes me on to the boat,” the former Nelson resident told the Nelson Star.
“I would like to maybe pursue it a little more, because I had the time of my life.” Chelsea Mainwaring
But the 26-year-old wasn’t as fan-girly in the heartthrobs’ presence as she anticipated being. “He was just a regular person, really. At first I was like ‘whoa, Jon Snow’ but after a few minutes it didn’t really faze me anymore. At one point we shared the lineup to the porta-potties.” Mainwaring was thrilled to be a part of the epic production, which was filmed in northern Belfast. The multi-month project
meant waking up in the middle of the night, keeping herself suitably disheveled (which involved rubbing coconut oil in her hair and not washing her hair for weeks) and at one point covering herself in fake blood.” “On set they really made us feel like we were in it. There was fake smoke and screaming in the background to get us into the mood.” They filmed on a remote, snowy shore and the days were often gruelling, but Mainwaring said it was worth it. “I was getting up at 12:30, 1 a.m. and then we’d start shooting as soon as it got light out, right until 5 or 6 p.m. I would get back to Belfast around 8 at night, so I only got a couple hours of sleep. But I was having so much fun.” While working on the show she stayed in a Belfast hostel, and she said the looks she got from residents were hilarious. “It was really fun walking back to the hostel looking like a total grease ball. If you didn’t bother to take the fake blood off it was even worse.” Her extra work included gazing up at an imaginary giant as it walked by, a pole representing what would later be added during post-production. Her favourite part, though, is when her character is resurrected. Before the shoot the extras spent a day being instructed how to properly zombify themselves. “They did about eight different takes of us getting up all haggard,” she said, describing the scene in which the Night’s King shows off his supernatural powers to a cowering Snow. “This is the most fun I’ve ever
had on a job. I would like to maybe pursue it a little more, because I had the time of my life,” said Mainwaring, who
studied jewelry-making at Kootenay School of Arts. She initially got into acting while trying to get a job work-
ing props on The Hobbit in New Zealand. “I love fantasy, it’s my thing,” she said.

Columnist launching Cranbrook history book BY FERDY BELLAND Cranbrook Daily Townsman
Over the past decade Jim Cameron has published over 300 articles (under Janus: Cranbrook Then and Now), describing in detail and with flair the depth, richness, and excitement that Cranbrook has enjoyed over the past century; notable citizens, startling events capturing the imagination and the headlines of the nation, fallen buildings, rising stars. “When Cranbrook celebrated its 100th anniversary as an established city, back in 2005, I was inspired to write historical columns for the Daily Townsman,” said Cameron. And tonight at Cranbrook’s Lotus Books Cameron is launching Volume 1 of Cranbrook: Then and Now. “There are countless Cranbrook stories needing to be told, and remembered forever,” said Cameron. “It's the feeling you have when you're standing somewhere and looking at some old building or a place, and you wonder: what did that look like when it was first built? And then I happened to chance upon some photos of a building that I recognized — original photos. I thought, there's got to be a story here. Why was it built like that? Why was it built there? Who built it? What was of utmost interest was finding out more about the people. “So the themes of the Janus columns began with the focus on the buildings of Cranbrook, but then gradually I dis-

Mary Elizabeth Hedges (nee O’Neill) March 22, 1949 ~ July 16, 2015
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Mary Hedges (nee O'Neill), loving and devoted wife of husband George, on Thursday July 16, 2015 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Mary grew up in Aurora, Ontario and had a long career with Bell Canada in Toronto and Thunder Bay. She and George retired to Creston, B.C., finding tranquility among the wildlife and mountains. Mary is predeceased by her parents, Bill and Joan. She will be greatly missed by her husband George; siblings Cookie (Wayne), Bill, Jay (Sandy), Luke (Kelly), Mark (Julie), and Germaine (Doug); many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Mary’s sense of humor, generosity and graciousness will be remembered by those who knew and loved her. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of the oncology unit at Cranbrook Hospital and the doctors and nurses in the palliative care unit at Creston Valley Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be planned in Creston and Ontario at a later date.
Margaret Ella Berg June 23, 1920 ~ July 18, 2015
Marg Berg passed away July 18, 2015 in Swan Valley Lodge, Creston, BC. Margaret Gregg was born in her grandmother’s house at Piapot, SK, June 23, 1920. In 1933, her parents packed their five children and all the possessions they could fit into a Model T truck to come west where, as Grampa Gregg said: “the wind didn’t blow”. When she was 15 she began cooking for Alf Berg on the farm he managed for Poole Construction Ltd. on the Creston flats. Marg and Alf Berg were married November 15, 1939. Marg and Alf began their family and raised their six children according to old-fashioned farming values. Marg loved entertaining and welcomed family and friends to her dinner table. After Alf’s passing, Marg took a secretary course in Nelson and then spent several years working for the Creston Veterinary Clinic. Marg is survived by her children: Marian (Gerry) Veysey of Fruitvale, Donald (Sylvia) Berg of Creston, and Ruth Berg of Cranbrook; sister Betty Gregg of Langley; brother-in-law Alvin Cameron of Creston; and several grand- and great-grand children. A Memorial Service will be held in September, to be announced at later date.
covered that the better stories are about the people who built them. And who settled in the area and made Cranbrook into Cranbrook.” Born and raised in Cranbrook, Cameron's family's roots stretch back before the First World War. “As far as researching goes, I’ve gone pretty much everywhere this journey will take you,” Cameron said. “The Townsman was my first stop, and was a huge resource, what with their vast archive of newspapers going back to the old Cranbrook Herald. The Cranbrook History Centre at the railway museum was also invaluable. “With the advent of the Internet, it made so much more information readily available. And complex! It’s pretty amazing where you end up going when you’re seeking something out online, bouncing off one thing onto another. A lot of it, too, is simply talking to people, talking to someone who knows someone that you end up having an interview with or sitting down to coffee with, and learning about their family, and then contacting more family members and friends. It’s hard! It’s pretty complicated, the amount of groups you go through to try to sort out one story or another.” Volume 1 of Cranbrook: Then and Now collects several dozen of Cameron’s Janus columns across his 2005-2014 publication run: stories of rockabilly concerts, stampeding elephants, burning Chinatowns — and even Boris Karloff. “It’s funny,” said Cameron. “I wasn’t sure at first how I wanted to lay things out. I thought I’d start with a story about the beginning of Cranbrook that I’d written a few years ago. And one thing lead to another. It was a natural progression of the book, but it’s certainly not chronological in terms of how I’ve written. It’s just what seemed to flow.” When asked if Cameron plans on releasing follow-up volumes on a semi-regular basis, he responded, “I was looking at something along the lines of a sequel every two years or so, but it really depends on how well this first book does, more than anything. As a self-published writer, the best I can hope for is to break even.” Cameron has printed a first run of 1,000 copies, and one can only hope that the tome finds it way into the eager hands of every 19th resident of the Key City. At the moment, Cameron has the material to run at least three more volumes of Cranbrook: Then and Now if desired — a veritable Encyclopedia Cranbrookica. “I’m always finding new information and new stories and unearthing forgotten local legends,” said Cameron. “So if I’m sifting through my already-published stuff and ruthlessly compiling another volume of recollections, the thing is, I’m still actively writing, and Cranbrook’s just so much of a great city with a great past that I can easily write 30 or 40 new articles every year. And if I keep doing that, it’s a regenerative thing, you know?” It would appear that Cameron’s book is garnering excitable interest beyond our corporate city limits. “There are folks out in the West Kootenay who are interested in distributing the book there — there’s another fascinating chunk of British Columbia I’d love to explore.” As for the book launch event, Cameron has been busily shuffling through his collected tales to decide which ones he’ll regale the audience with. “I’ve lived here in Cranbrook all my life. My grandfather was here in 1908. My mother’s side settled into Lumberton in the 1920s. I’ve always heard a lot of neat stories and met a lot of neat people. But I had no idea until I was inspired to begin writing about the local history just how deep and rich the stories really are. “What’s truly exceptional is that I’ll begin researching one particular person or one particular place, and that’ll ricochet into five other new, different stories ... because of the people involved. It was quite a pioneering crew who came out here. It wasn’t like they sat down for breakfast in Toronto and then drove out to Cranbrook to settle a town. There were people from all over the world who had done some pretty amazing things, really, when you start putting them together. And for them to all settle here? What a wealth of stories to draw from.”

Second ex-RCMP officer sentenced for perjury BY JEFF NAGEL bclocalnews.com
A second ex-RCMP officer has been sentenced to prison for lying to a public inquiry into the tasering death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski. Former RCMP Cpl. Benjamin (Monty) Robinson was sentenced Friday to two years less a day in jail, one year probation and 240 hours of community service for his false testimony to the Braidwood inquiry into Dziekanski’s death in Vancouver International Airport in 2007. It follows the 30-month prison sentence handed down last month for perjury to Const. Kwesi Millington, who fired the stun gun and was found to have exaggerated the threat a stapler-brandishing Dziekanski posed to officers in the confrontation caught on cellphone
video. He was granted bail while an appeal is underway. Dziekanski wandered for hours unaided at the airport before becoming frustrated, prompting authorities there to call police. The four officers tasered the Polish man five times quickly after arriving. He died within minutes of cardiac arrest. No criminal charges were laid against the officers, who had been found in the public inquiry to have deliberately misrepresented what happened. BC Supreme Court Justice Nathan Smith found Robinson colluded with other officers on what they would tell the inquiry and said a police officer failing to tell the truth strikes at the very heart of the justice system. Dziekanski’s mother Zofia Cisowski said the sentencings bring some closure eight years after the tragedy.
Black Press file
Former RCMP Cpl. Benjamin (Monty) Robinson has been sentenced to jail time for perjury.
“No sentence would bring my son back,” she said after the court decision. Her lawyer, Walter Kosteckyj, said the Braidwood inquiry and perjury proceedings would never have been necessary had the RCMP reacted appropriately to the fatality from the outset. Instead, he noted, senior Mounties initially denied the taser was fired more than twice despite possessing the video that contradicted officers’ claims. “The RCMP has to take a long hard look at themselves and reflect on how long this has taken and why it has taken this long,” Kosteckyj said. “I think the public generally should question the effectiveness of the RCMP as our leading police agency and ask for more and expect more from them.” While the maximum prison term for perjury is 14 years, no sentence handed down has ever been longer than the nine years given Air India bomb-maker Inderjit Singh Reyat in 2011. Two other officers involved were acquitted of perjury.

He's trying to tell a community story through his art while also using it to make a social impact, so the arts council is helping him research grants and look at possible ways of funding the project. “There are so many different sources of funding out there,”

Blackburn said. “The trick is knowing where to look for them, how to apply for it and what the people receiving the applications are looking to see when they are considering them. That's where we can help.” Blackburn added many grants are of the “matching” variety, so the more money they can raise for the project, the better the chances are that they will be able to fully fund it through awarded grants.
James Headrick is a trained photographer. He shoots weddings, mostly, but has dabbled in the realm of filmmaking, as well. “I've done mainly shorts so far,” he says, “A few mountain biking videos, that kind of thing.” But he's looking to take on a much larger production as his next endeavour, and he's working with the Campbell River Arts Council to see if they can help make it happen. Thunder Cats hosting annual hockey school CRESTON VALLEY THUNDER CATS
The Creston Valley Thunder Cats are pleased to announce the return of the team’s popular hockey school and junior prep camp, which will run from Aug. 17-21 at the Creston and District Community Complex. The Thunder Cats hockey school includes daily sessions for hockey 1-4 and atom (birth

years 2005-2008) and peewee and bantam (2001-2004) skaters/goaltenders in the afternoon with a focus on fun and skill development, while midget and junior-aged players will take to the ice for a prep camp in the evening that consists of high-tempo drills and scrimmages. Hockey school and junior prep camp registration for all age groups can be completed on the team’s website under the Events tab. All on-ice sessions will be led by Thunder Cats head coach Jeff Dubois, and hockey school sessions will also include instruction from current Thunder Cats players.
“The Thunder Cats hockey school is a perfect opportunity for players to work on their skating, shooting and puck skills in a fun environment,” said Dubois. “It’s a great chance for players who haven’t been on the ice during the summer to get a head start on the season, and for those who have been working hard to further sharpen their skills. “The junior prep sessions will mirror the competitive demands of a junior or rep tryout setting for players who are preparing to compete at those types of camps.” Registration in the Thunder Cats hockey school is $175 for five 75-minute
