With August comes the beginning of music festival season in the Boundary, with three gatherings slated for the next few weeks. 250-449-1982 It all kicks off tomorrow with the Boogie Bash bordercountrybob.ca setting up shop at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds. Alcohol and boating don’t mix Drinking and boating accounts for approximately 40 per cent of boating-related fatalities on Canadian waterways. To raise awareness and reduce alcoholrelated deaths, the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) is launching year three of an initiative called “Operation Dry Water.” Its goal is to discourage this dangerous practice. With the summer boating season in high gear, the Aug. 1 long weekend is the perfect time to remind Canadian boaters about the risks of drinking and boating. Combined with sun, wind, waves and the rocking motion of the boat, the effects of alcohol on the water can be greatly increased. “The CSBC, its partners and sponsors would like, through this and our other initiatives, to raise attention to the problem of boating under the influence and to remind boaters not to drink and boat,” stated John Gullick, chair of the Canadian Safe Boating Council. Operation Dry Water will focus on the potential risks of drinking and boating, and remedies that are currently in place to discourage it. Federal statutes dictate that, whether or not your craft is motorized, you can be charged with Impaired Operation of a vessel under the Criminal Code of Canada if your blood alcohol level exceeds the .08 threshold. This means you can be charged even if you are impaired while operating a canoe and a judge is able to, upon conviction, suspend your boating privileges. But that’s not all; it can get worse. Some provinces have enacted legislation where drinking and boating can affect your automobile driving privileges. In Ontario, for example, Bill 209 amended the Highway Traffic Act to also apply to “anyone operating or having the care or control of a vessel.” As such, anyone found boating with a blood alcohol level above .05, faces an on-the-spot automobile drivers’ license suspension. Should the person’s blood alcohol concentration exceed .08, upon conviction, an additional suspension of up to one year can be applied.

Listen carefully. Your children may give you clues that finances are becoming a struggle without coming right out and saying it. They may complain about a landlord being too tough on them. They may express anxiety about whether they will get a raise or bonus at work. Probe to find out if financial stress is behind these comments. Be open. Tell our children about some of your own money challenges,
today and when you were their age. This can help reassure them that you won’t be judgmental, as well as giving you a chance to share some of your money management tips.
In the midst of this period of rapid change, there are regular expenses to pay – from groceries to utilities. There may be a student loan, a car loan and mortgage payments to make. In the months when income doesn’t match expenses, credit card balances and other consumer debt may start to creep upwards.
Offer objectivity. Acknowledge that you don’t have all the answers and, if appropriate, recommend that your children make an appointment to speak with your advisor. An advisor can provide expert advice – and young adults may be more comfortable talking about their financial situation with a professional.
The sooner young adults start balancing income and expenses and keeping debt to a minimum, the better positioned they will be for future financial success. Here are tips on how to have a productive conversation with your children:

The challenge for many people in their mid-20s is that they’re experiencing so many “firsts”: a first full-time job, a first apartment, a first car. Music festivals The second annual CannaFest will be staged in Grand Forks James Donaldson Park on Aug. 7 - 8. The show is put on by the B.C. Pain Society and is billed as “the hottest rock and roll festival in Canada.” Organizer Chuck Varabioff said plans have gone very well and he is ready for a great festival. This is the second time that Varabioff has organized CannaFest, the first one taking place in Vancouver last year. This year’s musical line-up is a who’s who of Canadian seventies and eighties rockers, including Lee Aaron, Jerry Doucette, Prism, Headpins and Streetheart, along with former Foreigner vocalist Lou Gramm. Advance passes for the weekend sell for $75 for an adult or $30 for a child (age 12 and under), while children under age six are free. One-day tickets priced at $50 for an adult. Tickets are going fast; visit cannafest.ca to order. CannaFest is an all-ages event. The Ponderosa Music Festival rolls into Rock Creek for three days on Aug. 21 with another impressive indie rock line-up including veteran Salmon Arm artist Herald Nix and headliners Mountie, which features critically acclaimed Ontario rocker Hawksley Workman. The brainchild of friends Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi, Ponderosa strives to maintain a certain vibe and sense of community that the organizers feel has faded from some of the larger

outdoor music events. “The location, the arts, the food, the story, and of course, the music all contribute to the unique festival experience that is Ponderosa,” explained the organizers. “We feel so passionate about this project and take every opportunity to bring something genuine and pure to those who attend—going back to the true meaning of ‘hosting’ a party. The Ponderosa team also has a focus on sustainability and believes in organic growth. Rock Creek is a small community that enjoys its laid back, undiscovered reputation and we want to be sure the festival grows at a rate that the community is comfortable with. “This is one of the reasons why we see Ponderosa as a niche festival—a unique getaway festival experience for both long-time festivalgoers and those looking to try it for the first time.” Despite being billed as an all-ages festival, Ponderosa caters primarily to a mature audience, and an adult must accompany all attendees under the age of 19. The vendor portion of the festival will be made up of local artists and artisans, unique boutique merchants and an eclectic array of foods designed to suit all types of diets. The festival takes place on the Rock Creek Fairgrounds. Three-day festival passes start at $125, and one-day tickets can be purchased for $45.

Foot care comes to clinic
Licensed Practical Nurse Beverly MacDonald is offering her second foot care clinic at the Greenwood Medical Clinic on Aug. 6. Initiated by resident physician Dr. Michael Slatnik, the service is the same as that which MacDonald has been offering, primarily to seniors, since she moved to Grand Forks from Vancouver in 2010. A long-term care and dementia specialist, MacDonald has worked from coast to coast on many levels including assisted living. Upon her relocation to
the Boundary, she established an independent business in healthcare and was instrumental in the establishment of an assisted care facility, as well as securing her Level 1 and 2 foot-care certification. MacDonald has since offered foot care, as well as other services to seniors on both a private and clinical basis. Dr. Slatnik requested she organize a clinic in Greenwood to eliminate the need for residents to travel to Grand Forks for treatment, especially challenging during the winter months. The
appointments are covered under the Medical Services Plan and are particularly useful for diabetics as well as seniors who are unable to cut their nails because of arthritis or other mobility issues. The clinic also addresses problems regarding footwear comfort, gait, bunions and calluses. Those interested in making use of the foot clinic should call the Greenwood Medical Clinic at 250-445-6626, Monday to Friday to book an appointment.

should be warned that we offer no help to anyone who is as they say, “church shopping”. If you are hesitating between two Christian “denominations,” you will not learn from us whether you ought to become an Anglican, a Baptist, a Pentecostal or a Presbyterian. This is intentional (even in the list I have just given the order is alphabetical). We are not better or worse than any other Christian church in the Boundary area, just different. There is no mystery about our own position. We are very ordinary people who are in relationship with an extraordinary God. We are part of Life Church International, but we are not trying to convert anyone to our own position. We have the utmost confidence that God, our God is able to direct you to the fellowship of believers that will best suit your path in life. Hope to see you there some time.
Patricia Rose Stewart March 26, 1932 – July 17, 2015
With sadness in our hearts we announce the passing of Patricia Rose Stewart, nee TURLOCK, who had a quick but courageous bout with cancer. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, to parents Victoria Sichkaryk Turlock and Peter Robert Turlock, Pat lived in many places throughout her life from Saskatchewan to B.C., staying the longest time in Midway, B.C. She is immediately survived by her four children Gary Stewart, Laurie Ann Stewart Pharr, Melanie Stewart and Michael Stewart as well as her brother Bob (Irene) and sister Margaret (Ron). She is predeceased by her two children Jim and Becky, her siblings Billy and Raymond and her ex-husband Al. Pat was part of a huge family and is also survived by many dear grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, etc. Pat was kind and classy, a tough woman with grace and heart and an appetite for fun and adventure. She brought life to any gathering and was a treat to spend time with. Our hearts are filled with sadness and deep love for our very special family member and friend. A memorial will be held on August 15, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Midway Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Greenwood Branch (155) of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Pines offers a unique camp experience CRAIG LINDSAY
Boundary Creek Times Contributor
Although summer might be close to half way done, there’s still plenty of fun to be had at Pine Bible Camp. Pines has been operating since 1963 and has had more than 1,000 kids pass through its doors. The camp is spread out over 65 hectares and features cabins, a kitchen/ dining hall, an outdoor chapel, a 50’ dome tent, and a nearby beach on the river. The camp offers both week-long residential camps as well as day camps for boys and girls with a variety of themes. This year’s camps have once again proved to be very popular, although there is space in the upcoming camps. “The camps are going really good,” said Gene Krahn, executive director for Pines Bible Camp. “We’ve got kids coming from all over from Creston/Cranbrook area to the Fraser Valley.” Krahn said the residential camps are very popular where the kids stay up at the camp for the whole week. “They stay up from Monday to Saturday and participate in a bunch of activities such as archery, kayaking, crafts, high ropes course, swimming, wide (group) games and chapel,” said Krahn. Krahn said the camps are divided by age with groups for 8- to 12-year-olds, 11to 14-year-olds, and a shorter “small fry” camp for 5- to 9-year-olds. There is also a teen camp for 13- to 17-year-olds.

Krahn said the day camp program has really increased in popularity. “We’ve really developed that into quite an exciting thing,” he said. “This week is art week so we have a few art specialists coming in to do art with the kids. We’ve had a sports week and other weeks are planned such as science week. It’s going really good. The kids come up just for the day and it’s a lot of fun.” Pines is currently running a wilderness camp for girls, where they spend a week sleeping in teepees experiencing the outdoor lifestyle. “We provide the food and they cook the food over a Coleman stove,” he said. “They sleep in the teepees. It’s more rustic but a lot of fun. Just like camp was a long time away. It’s good fun and it’s growing in popularity.” Krahn said there’s still lots of room in
all the upcoming camps. For those who remember their camp experiences from years ago, you know it’s lots of fun and a great way to make friends. “Camp is a great place for kids to make some new friends and try some new experiences and build memories that last a life time,” he said. Krahn said the hot and dry weather is not putting any kind of damper on the camp at all. “Every afternoon is beach time,” he said. “Everyone gets cooled off for a good, long time at the beach. We’ve got a great swimming hole. We have lots of nice sand and great swimming. Everyone gets cooled off well in the afternoon.” There are plenty other exciting events coming up at Pines including a family camp this weekend. “It’ll be a great time,” he said. “We have a

square dance. We have a caller come in and we have a hoedown. People from age 8 to 88 participating together; it’s a lot of fun.” There’s also a SERF program, which is for those boys and girls in Grade 8 and older. “It’s for kids who want to Serve Enthusiastically, while building Relationships and having Fun,” said Krahn. “It’s a service. The kids come and do dishes and have their own program. It’s a smaller group. It’s a great experience helping kids to be a bit more selfless and put others first. That experience can really change someone’s view dramatically.” Pines celebrated their 50th anniversary back in 2013 with a big celebration. Krahn said Pines is the biggest camp in the entire Kootenay region. “I’ve been at the camp for 21 years now and I’m seeing teen campers from my first years here bringing their kids,” he said. “It’s very rewarding to have these parents who had a great summer camp experience and want to pass on that legacy to their kids. It’s just a delight to chat about old staff and who their cabin leaders were and the memories of great games we used to play.” Krahn said it’s great to see the former campers want to bring their kids to camp to have some of those same experiences. “It’s pretty rewarding,” he said. side of an abandoned house in her neighbourhood with chalkboard paint and stencilled it with a grid of the sentence, “Before I die I want to__________.” Anyone walking by could pick up a piece of chalk and reflect on their lives or share their personal aspirations in a public space. Chang’s experiment met with immediate success. The wall was filled almost overnight, providing her with greater understanding of her neighbours and, perhaps more importantly, a reminder that she was not alone as she tried to make sense of her life after her devastating loss. After posting a few photos of the wall online, Chang received hundreds of messages from people that were interested in creating such a wall in their communities. She subsequently created a website to help provide resources for those planning a Before I Die wall, and there are now over 1,000 such installations around the world. Adele chose a different title for the Motherlode project, opting for the slightly more uplifting “If I had one wish…” as the beginning of the sentence that visitors are encouraged to complete. She created the stencils used to paint the installation, and friend Barry Noll was instrumental in mounting it on June 17. The Wishing Wall was dedicated to Dave’s mother and Adele’s father, and invite everyone to drop by and take part in this truly inspiring project.
