CurcuminRich Theracurmin unlocks the medicinal power of curcumin, the yellow pigment found in turmeric (Curcuma longa). Turmeric is a member of the ginger family, and is the principal spice used in curry. In India turmeric root has been used for thousands of years in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to treat inflammatory conditions. Research confirms that curcumin can promote a healthy inflammatory response and provide antioxidant protection to cells. However, when it comes to curcumin, it’s not how much you take, but how much you absorb, that matters. Early clinical studies found that large quantities of curcumin had to be consumed because the absorption (bioavailability) of regular curcumin is quite poor. Curcumin is relatively insoluble in water and is rapidly transformed and excreted from the body.

Theracurmin is an advanced formulation that uses proprietary dispersion technology to create microscopic particles dispersed in a colloidal suspension for better absorption. Theracurmin is 300 times more bioavailable than regular curcumin powder, ensuring a therapeutically effective level in the blood. Published studies comparing blood levels of curcumin using leading brands confirm that on a milligram-to-milligram basis, Theracurmin is the best-absorbed curcumin product on the market.

VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY IS ONE OF THE most common nutritional deficiencies. The newest form is known as methylcobalamin, and is considered an active form of the vitamin, immediately available for use by the body. Vitamin B12, along with folic acid, is required to synthesize DNA, build red blood cells, and maintain the myelin sheath that hold nerve cells together and conducts signals along the nerves. This makes it critical to prevent neurological diseases, including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and ALS.

Adults and children alike are sleeping less and a large portion of this decrease can be attributed to an increase in use of electronic media. Quality of sleep also seems to suffer with more violent content. Both fictional and news content have been shown to increase stress and anxiety and impair sleep.

Screen time may also impact our food choices. Research has shown that even brief exposure to televised food commercials embedded in cartoon programming can affect children's food preference.

We are exercising less, getting outside less and communicating in person less. The use of screens (texting, Internet...) in teens has been reported to be detrimental to their ability to read non-verbal emotional cues from others. There is much research suggesting that violent content produces desensitization, more aggressive behaviour and less empathy.

Consider creating family rules. My children are 2 and 5 and while right now it is relatively easy to control their use of devices, I hope that having rules in place will help set expectations for the future. Here are some examples. 1. No devices (TV, computer, iPad, smart phone) in the bedroom – get an alarm clock rather than use your phone alarm.

Technology will keep advancing and we will continue to rely on it. However, we need to take action to ensure that we are doing everything possible to protect our health and that of our children.

Questions to ask yourself:

$ 68

$ 48

I will be the first to admit that I am completely reliant on and enjoy many new advances in technology. I use the Internet everyday for research and entertainment, I love finding out what my friends are doing on Facebook and sharing health tips on my business page.

Here is a list of questions to ask to asses our use of technology and screens. These questions are aimed at parents but they could just as easily apply to any adult.

350 mL Product of the Philippines

320 g Product of Greece

343 Cook Street

As a naturopathic doctor, I asses and treat my patients holistically. I ask about key areas of life and health that when in balance, support our overall function. Examples of these key areas include sleep, stress, physical activity, diet and our social interactions. This weekend has me reflecting on the toll that our increasing reliance on technology is taking on each of these areas of our health and that of our children. More and more, I'm learning about the negative impact of our use of technology, in particular screens.

60 g • Product of the U.S.A.

Cook St. Village

I spent the past weekend on a get-away with my husband, screen free. The resort was on the west coast – crashing waves, beautiful forests, hikes to idyllic beaches devouring seasonal wild berries. Our cabin was free of a TV, phone and wifi. It was a wonderful break from the mad rush of life.

2. No devices at the table, meals with the family are important times to connect and practice social interaction. 3. Limit the amount of time spent looking at screens – the Canadian Paediatric Society discourages all use of screen-based activities for children under two. Limit screen time to less than 1 to 2 hours per day for older children. 4. Out door time, homework and tidy up must happen before devices can be used. 5. Use of devices (TV, iPad, internet, cell phone) is a privilege not a right. How are you navigating the world of technology and it's ever increasing distraction? Is it time to take action and create some defined boundaries? DR. ALEXIS BLANKS, ND is a naturopathic doctor with a special interest in women, children and family health. ou would not expect one of the world’s most popular and award-winning Latin soul entertainers to live in Smithers BC, but former Victoria resident Alex Cuba says it’s small town life that has enabled him to earn two Junos and three Latin Grammy awards. “It works for me, it’s good for family life,” says the Cuban-born entertainer, whose real name is Alexis Puentes. “I have family around, it’s a lovely town. For me, I know I can go and know they are in a safe, happy, friendly place.” He and his wife Sarah have three children who range in age from 8 to 18. “If you live in New York or Toronto you can’t do music and have a family. In Smithers I can live with some comfort, it’s affordable, it makes sense.” His favourite part is living just minutes from the airport.

Live! At the Fringe!

Watch for comic Mike Delamont on Just For Laughs All Access on the Comedy Network Aug 29!

The bad review. When you’re at a festival, you know at some point that the reviewers will come. It’s often early and in my experience it’s always on your worst show. I can’t tell you the amount of performers who have walked off stage on opening night and thought ... I hope nobody from the papers was there. We check online several times a day just waiting. Waiting for the word. A bad review can really hurt you, A good review can go either way, and a great review can fill your entire theatre. I have waited with bated breath for reviews many times over the years. Sometimes they have been 5 stars and you just relax, and other years it’s 1 star. Sometimes it’s lots of stars, with a bad review. Sometimes it’s the opposite. As a performer we have a

strange relationship with reviews. I have seen shows that got 5 star reviews and sold out houses in one town and then in the next they totally bomb. In Victoria it’s always fun to see what the papers will say. If the main arts critic in town likes the show people post it everywhere and if he hates it they always say, “Well what does he know? He’s just a sports writer!” The last time I was at a festival in Vancouver the theatre critic liked my show, but then went on to give away the last 10 minutes of it. Can anyone say spoilers? My first year doing a show in Edmonton the reviewer gave away 16 of my punchlines. SIXTEEN! That’s a quarter of the show! So strange. This time of year can be tough on theatre critics. It’s Fringe season. That means a lot of shows in a very little amount of time. Some of the shows are polished and amazing, and some of them are just damn awful. One show two years ago became infamous because a man received – and evacuated – three mayonnaise enemas live on stage in Winnipeg. I don’t know how many people saw

that show, but it has become a folk legend. The worst review I ever got was from this very magazine! They said the writing was terrible and even shamed our audience for laughing. I’ve gotten better over the years. Now they even pay me for my terrible writing! Victoria’s Fringe Festival is one of the most popular on the circuit. Hundreds of artists will invade downtown Victoria for 10 days of shows in everything from beautiful theatres to ugly old churches. This is the first year I’ve gotten into the Fringe since 2008, so even I will be there. If you have never done the Fringe, come out. See shows! Take the risk. You might see a show that you hate, or you might see a show that will change your life! When I was younger I saw Chris Gibbs do Antoine Feval at the Fringe and thought – I could never do a funny one man show! The Fringe changed my life ... See a show. Who knows what it might do for you! • God Is A Scottish Drag Queen II Downtown Activity Centre Aug. 28 – Sept. 6

Writing on the wall You’ll find it if you walk half-way down the alley and up a few stairs. Turn around and look up. It’s written in pencil on a white wall – it’s O.K. The simple message gave me goosebumps when I first started digesting it. I rushed out of the alley to meet the videographer I was working with and we started asking people in the Quadra Village if they knew anything. Nobody we spoke with did. So we ventured deeper down the alley, where it narrows so much you have to almost walk sideways. At the end, we found a door and knocked on it. Kat answered. She said she smiles every time she passes the graffiti, and suspects it may have been written by one of the homeless people who live in the area and cuts through the alley. “I think it’s just a reminder for people that ‘it’s O.K.’” It’s a message Kat would have liked to have heard after being abandoned by her dad as a child, while she was feeling unwanted and unloved. Her mom took her on a vacation to Florida when she was seven, but they never went to Disney World and they never came back to Victoria. Growing up in the U.S. was not O.K. for Kat. “I’ve attended 23 different schools across 18 cities. And I’ve moved 123 times.” She dropped out of school at 16, and endured homelessness, addiction, and severe depression. By the time she was in her early 20s, Kat had moved back to Canada and found a

job. That’s when she received a Facebook message ADAM SAWATSKY from an aunt @CTVNewsAdam and cousin she didn’t know she had. They told Kat her dad’s side of the family had been searching for her for 15 years. They said her mom took her and her dad never left her. When Kat finally reunited with her dad, he brought a child’s glove with him. “It was a glove I had when I was a kid. He kept it. I just started crying so hard when I saw it. (I thought) this is somebody who cares.” We meet Kat’s dad a couple hours after we first found the ‘its O.K.’ message. Sheldon shows us pictures of a happy little girl he once thought he’d never see again. He tells us how proud he is of how Kat’s survived and that she’s now in university. He admits it’s taken a lot of work to rebuild their relationship, but says they’re great friends and she’s always been “number one” in his heart. For Kat, having Sheldon and his family in her life is as profound as it gets. “For the first time – wow – this is what love feels like.” The two are neighbours now too – both living in a building next to an alley marked by a message of hope. Adam Sawatsky is co-host of CTV News Vancouver Island at Five. On weekends, he hosts ‘Eye on the Arts’ on CFAX 1070.

hen the sun comes out in Victoria, the first thing on many people’s minds is heading out to a patio. Most of us are in tune with the well-known patios around the city, but it’s nice to go outside of your comfort zone on occasion and find someplace a little different or out of the way. Whether you’re downtown, out on the Saanich Peninsula, or on the West Shore, during warm summer days and nights, Victorians love to dine outside. Some like to bask in the sun, soaking up the city life, while others enjoy the cooling ocean breezes and views of kayakers or cyclists passing by that make patios all the rage. The best part of hanging out with your friends and family on a local patio is enjoying the lush greenery and overflowing baskets of fresh flowers, relaxing under a big umbrella and escaping from the rat race. Whether you love to sit at Zambri’s with a glass of light, crisp Bonarda and enjoy the fantastic people watching that downtown affords; or out on the waterfront at Glo with a classic bellini, where you can dream of sailing by on your own yacht while enjoying the nightlife; at Belleville’s Diner where you can soak up the views of the bustling Inner Harbour while munching on one of the best breakfasts in town; or watching the light bounce off the water from the patio at Pendray Restaurant while enjoying afternoon tea with a glass of sparkling wine, you’ll find your special place to savour the outdoor dining experience. From a morning family brunch to romantic late night cocktails for two, under the stars, it’s summer in Victoria and your patio beckons.

elebrate the richness and diversity of India’s arts and culture through three days of booming music, local multi-cultural community talent, fashion, palmistry and mouthwatering, authentic Indian cuisine at the sixth annual India Mela Festival. The Mela is a source of pride and unity for the Indian community and each year from 7,000 to 15,000 spectators enjoy the opportunity to experience and taste authentic Indian culture, says India Canada Cultural Association of Victoria director, Sunil Bhatia. “It’s growing every year. Every year we’re adding more and more kiosks, more food varieties, more fashions, programming.”
The Mela runs from noon to 6pm on Friday, Aug. 7 then two full days, Saturday Aug 8, 11am to 8pm and Sunday, Aug 9 from 11am to 7pm, at Centennial Square. With a main stage featuring Indian arts, music, dance forms including Bhangra, dandiya/garba, classical music, 12 different multi-cultural groups and much more, this free multi-cultural celebration of life is great for the entire family. themed food kiosks representing many parts of India. “This year we have several restaurants involved in the showcase,” says Bhatia. “From butter chicken to veg jal farezi, a mixed vegetable dish with cream, to our famous samosas and pakoras with mild, medium or hot chutney – we have different spice levels to try,” says Bhatia. “Cool it off with a mango lassi, a yogurt drink flavoured with mango, or try a dessert. There will be an Indian sweets stall there this year and tandoori pizza, it’s pizza with an Indian touch. And if you don’t like that – have some popcorn,” he says with a laugh. India Canada Cultural Association of Victoria’s Mela includes an expanded kids’ corner with a variety of games, bouncy castle, basketball and an ice cream truck. Entertainment this year includes Shiamak Dawar Academy of Bollywood Fame from Vancouver. “It’s a very famous academy. They do big Bollywood shows. They’re doing three shows on Saturday and we’ll also have local groups. There are a lot of youth from Victoria performing, the youth are very involved in promoting the culture,” he says. The Mela is an opportunity for the whole community to gather in celebration. Every year the ICCA includes other cultures including First Nations, Chinese, Mexican, Latino, Greek and Japanese. ince Ditrich calls himself a recovering Albertan. “It only comes up during times of extreme crises like traffic stress,” he jokes. Currently living in Nanoose Bay, it seems unlikely that factors into his life

often. Ditrich, longtime drummer for stalwart Canadian alt-rock band Spirit of the West, came to the west coast be a part of the emerging music scene in early-80s Vancouver, playing with the likes of Long John Baldry, Sue Medley, Paul Hyde and Great Big Sea. In 1990, he was invited to join Spirit of the West. “As the saying goes, if you want to win the door prize, you’ve gotta be at the dance – and I won the door prize. I’ve had a wonderful lifetime in the music business,” he says. It has been a lifetime for Ditrich who got his first drum set on his third birthday and made his professional debut at age six. “I was a drumming foetus,” he jokes. “My dad was a musician, he had his own band and I was his drummer.” Ditrich was paid $15 for his first show and was a full time regular drummer with his dad’s band by age nine. “It’s obvious my dad had me complete his dreams,” he says. His dad taught him the basics of music and the rest he learned through trial and error. “I may have been a nine year old, but I was a damn good nine year Spirit old,” he says with another laugh. of the West His family now includes his Spirit Butchart Gardens of the West bandmates. “When we Aug. 20 all get together there’s like 33, 34

of us. It’s like a family gathering, like a family experience … people having babies, it’s really fun. There’s a shorthand between all of us Spirit speak, we call it – it’s very difficult for a newcomer to break in – they don’t know what the hell we’re talking about. We can encapsulate an entire concept in one phrase.” The Spirit family is now gathering around lead singer John Mann, who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease a year ago. While Mann continues to tour with the band, he now uses an iPad to help him remember lyrics and relies on the group for other support. “He’s lost a considerable amount of capacity to think on his feet,” says Ditrich. “Which is difficult for him because he was always a magnificent performer, so clever with his lyrics – the things that will eventually go away.” Ditrich says it’s a “completely different kettle of fish” during performances now. “There’s no racing around the stage anymore. … there are multiple sad effects.”

Alec watson photo

Spirit of the West bandmates are like family, says drummer Vince Ditrich.

But fans still embrace Mann and Spirit of the West with an unwavering passion. “The support has been so much more than I would have thought. I’m grateful, delighted, surprised at the show of support for this guy who’s going through this brutal struggle with the worst imaginable disease,” he says, adding that Mann, along with his love of music and performing, has risen to the challenge. “It’s a magical thing to see. A lot of people wouldn’t have the macaroons to do what he does. It’s one of his few remaining unmitigated pleasures, singing and making people happy with his voice.” And his voice sounds “glorious,” says Ditrich. “It’s like butter. It’s more relaxed now it has great tone, it’s fantastic. He’d love to keep it up, keep doing it for a while longer.”

Small, compact and nestled between ocean and rainforest in the northern Vancouver Island wilderness, Telegraph Cove (population around 20) seems to have jumped through time. The boardwalk-lined resort with its preserved historic buildings recalls a rustic past in which the cove harboured a lumber mill and salmon saltery. Nature beckons travellers to a slew of outdoor activities including whale watching, bear watching, fishing, ocean kayaking, caving, diving, hiking, walking and Aboriginal cultural touring. Simplicity is one of Telegraph Cove’s greatest charms. The Cove is a sanctuary in which to unwind at the end of an action-packed day. It bustles through summer, when visitors number 120,000. Telegraph Cove accommodations range from buildings on stilts to oceanside RV parks. Dining-wise, there two places to eat in Telegraph Cove, however, diners can find greater choice just a half an hour away in Port McNeill. Telegraph Cove is most famous for the great Orcas, minke and humpback whales that frolic in the Johnstone Strait and Broughton Archipelago. Stubbs Island Whale Watching, launched in 1980, was the first whale watching outfit in BC and on Canada’s west coast. It was a landmark endeavour. Bear fans should contact Tide Rip Adventures for watching grizzlies in Knight Inlet. In the month of June, the berries are not yet ripe and the bears come to the beach to roll rocks for eels, crabs and isopods. Beginning in August, the bears come down to feast during the salmon run. You can also find North Island Kayak Rental & Tours for ocean kayakers and the excellent Whale Interpretive Centre in Telegraph Cove. Consider the latter an essential companion experience to the whale watching adventure. Don’t miss it. Make sure you plan to spend a few days in the area, allowing enough time to take in all of the wildlife and amazing attractions this natural wonder provides. – with files from Hello BC

MARCIA BALL

ould being plugged into a makeshift lie detector make you nervous? Last summer, Andrew Wade brought The Hatter to the Victoria Fringe Festival, this year, he’s back as The Most Honest Man In The World. It’s a personal show where he builds a functional polygraph machine onstage and attaches himself to it to figure out the truth of moments from his past. The show is about telling the truth – about being as genuine as possible throughout life. It has received rave reviews and will be at the Victoria Fringe Aug. 28 to Sept. 5. Wade says he’s always had a strong desire for people to see him as he really is. “When I was eight I decided that every morning I would dress myself according to how I was feeling that day, so that people wouldn’t, say, see bright colours and think I was happy, when really I was mopey that day.” Using stories, music, apps, and tap shoes, Wade looks at old relationships and insecurities as he tries to learn how to let go – all without a script. “I wanted these stories to be as true as I know them to be – that moment when I am performing,” he says. “That said, to keep me on track with what I want to cover I have a stack of cue cards with prompts like Mistletoe, The Phantom of the Lunchatorium and Amy. And at the end, the audience gets a vote.” At the end of his show, Wade asks the audience if they should hold onto regrets

and memories, or to forget them and move on. “It’s a difficult question. I often even barter up a real physical object as part of that vote. Because the moment isn’t just theatre – it’s real. In Toronto, I had a man come up after the show who gave me a tremendous hug, then fell to his knees in tears. “An element of my show is that of being the new person walking into a room where you don’t know anyone, and this fellow had recently moved to Canada from Bolivia. He connected. Those moments of magic are why I perform.” The Most Honest Man In The World, Wood Hall, Victoria Conservatory of Music, 900 Johnson. victoriafringe.com.

The good news is the new location will be better and we have room to grow Fibrations – and Fibrations has been growing.” In addition to the beautiful Gary Oak Room of Fairfield Gonzales Community Place, 1330 Fairfield Rd., Fibrations will be held in the adjacent, picturesque Porter Park on Aug. 16, 10am to 4pm. It’s a community-based celebration of fibre with vendors sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm through demonstrations and hands-on-activities. All of the organization is done by volunteers with a focus on making it artist friendly and widely inclusive. Costs for vendors are kept low and all the money raised, aside from money earned by the vendors, goes right back into the event. “We’re able to have better programming with the added indoor space,” says Davis. “It’s still an outdoor event, but the Fairfield Gonzales Community Centre has a great room with a built in PA system where we can have lectures and workshops, actually, more than

ever before.” Woven, knit, needle felted and other finished products will be in abundance. This includes practical items such as scarves and hats, but also more creative display works. Supplies will also be plentiful. Wool, knitting yarn, tools and all the other items needed for fibre art will be for sale. Local hand-dyed knitting yarn producers will be there selling products and food vendors will also be on site. “Workshops are the bigger trend in the burgeoning industry,” says Davis. His wife and Knotty By Nature co-owner Stephanie Papik, has branched out to a new venture called Moonrise Creative which will be hosting two workshops on Aug 15 (moonrisecreative.ca). “There’s a charge for that but on Sunday at Fibrations, 100 per cent of the lectures are free. There will be lots of demos all day long.” fibrationsvic.wordpress.com

hort notice invitations and long anticipated celebrations keep our summer days filled with questions of what to bring and where to go. It brings me joy to unveil a homemade four layer birthday cake and share simple recipes that are always the biggest hits. I’m writing this month from a family cabin on the lake in BC’s Cariboo. Eight of us converged from our three points on the Canadian map, helped plan the menu, prepare the food and gather water for dishes. I brought coffee, craft beer, cider, BC wine and STUMP Coastal Forest Gin by Phillips Fermentorium Distilling Co. to pair with meals and afternoons. The others brought the history of this place (my partner’s Dad built this cabin in 1970), and talk of meals their parents made here. The plates, wood stove, coffee on the deck, each tied to a vivid memory and tremendous sense of place. Their Dad’s handwritten pancake recipe adorns the kitchen wall.

Where we feed our families, raise our glasses, and what we take to share with friends can live long past the meal itself. For inspiration or foolproof guidance on what to take or serve at summer gatherings, try some of my favourite resources like smittenkitchen.com, itstodiefor.ca, theforestfeast.com and guiltykitchen.com. Do not be afraid, make something new. Remember, no one else saw the photos in the recipe. One of my favourite summer salads is a cabbage salad. Use half a head each of green and red cabbage, cut in half and sliced as thinly as you can, 2-3 carrots and 1 apple grated on the large holes of a box grater, 4-5 green onions chopped in rounds (use the white and green parts), 1-2 avocados quartered, peeled, roughly chopped, 1 lime squished over the apple so it doesn’t brown, a palm full of roughly chopped fresh cilantro if you like it, 2-3 cap fulls of good apple cider vinegar, 1-2 tablespoons of good olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. Chop it all on one

board, scoop it up, toss it into a large bowl (for a crowd-sized double batch, use a clean sink to mix it). Mix it with your hands, squish the avocado into the cabbage and toss it all together. Serve heaping out of your favourite bowl. Keeps great in the fridge or the cooler for a few days. If you’re taking your celebration out and want casual patio seating, try the Adirondack chairs at Big Wheel Burger, Rock Bay’s Wheelie’s Motorcycle Cafe, sidewalk tables at Cascadia Bakery or Bard & Banker, or the sunny courtyard of Market Square at Wannawafel. For larger menus, try Canoe Brewpub, Il Covo Trattoria, Bubby’s Kitchen, Prima Strada Cook St. Village, or Lure Restaurant and Bar. Try it you’ll like it: Strawberry Milkshakes at Big Wheel Burger, $5. Gnocchi at Stage Wine Bar in Fernwood, $13.75. Joie Farms 2014 Rosé available at Private Liquor Stores, $22.

know it’s summer and a patio romp would be ideal for this time of year but then it had to go and rain. So, in we went to The Guild to explore their cocktail offerings. I don’t think of The Guild as a cocktail establishment but then to my surprise there behind the bar was Mike, ex of the now defunct Prime and more recently having finished a stint at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. Back to the task at hand and which cocktail was calling my name. The Bartender’s Choice seemingly would make up my mind for me. The description on the menu for this item was ‘roll the dice and have our bartender craft a masterpiece specifically for you’ and so I was surprised when presented with an Old Fashioned but then totally delighted because it was well made, delicious and really what I wanted after all. The menu at The Guild leans heavily on the craft bar classics including The Last Word, The 20th Century, and the Boulevardier. I was now desiring something refreshing and while The Last Word is lighter and very herbal I went for The Guild Cup, a take on the Pimm’s Cup. The drink has many variations in terms of the fizz – ginger ale, ginger beer, soda water – but the mainstays are cucumber and, of course, Pimm’s No. 1. The Guild variation settled on Fever Tree gingerale and added in Broker’s Gin and Cointreau. Fabulous! Life at The Guild is full of surprises including a creative list of bar snacks.

film Singer Amy Winehouse’s rise to pop stardom is chronicled in the new documentary Amy.

Eaten alive by fame

FACEBOOK

ROBERT MOYES arts@mondaymag.com Halfway through the splendid Amy Winehouse documentary, simply titled Amy, there is a scene where the greatest soul-jazz singer of her generation is at a club in London but connected live by satellite to the 50th Grammy Awards ceremony. Unable to travel internationally because of her notorious battles with addiction, Winehouse is participating remotely because she’s up for a half-dozen Grammy nominations for her Back To Black album. She famously wins all six, but it’s when she nabs the prestigious Album of the Year, that it happens: her friends and band mates are jubilant, but as the camera dollies in on Winehouse the look on her face is one of sheer terror. Earlier in the film, when she

The best experience you can have at the Toronto International Film Festival is to rise out of your jaded “I’ve seen it all before” mentality and become totally delighted by a film and filmmaker whom you know nothing about. In 2000, Danish director Lone Scherfig was one of those with Italian for Beginners. In 2007 Roy Andersson’s You the Living was another, his series of vignettes about the greatness and baseness of humankind had a pay-off that leaves one reeling. Andersson’s most recent film, the whimsically named A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence, winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, is one of the best films you can see this year. As Robbie Collin from the Telegraph wrote, “you have to grab a net and try and coax your soul back down from the ceiling.” It’s not often you feel that about a film. here are so many stores to choose from when it comes to shopping in Victoria. I prefer to shop in the smaller, local boutiques because the service is great and you can always find unique items. Here are some of my favourite local retailers: Sitka is the quintessential west coast store featuring decor that reminds me of being in a log cabin out in the woods. Whether you are looking for an outfit to go camping, surfing or just something casual to wear out for coffee with friends, Sitka has you covered. t’s summer time and our thoughts are more focused on relaxation than actual work, so I thought it would be fun to visit three local stores and choose three interior decor items that were practical, desirable, and a splurge. Max Furniture on Bridge Street, is featuring these really fabulous, yet practical, Vancouver-made ottomans. They come in any size, hundreds of fabrics, have the option of being a storage ottoman, a living room coffee table, an entry way bench or at the foot of a bed! I was told they are hot seller right now for condos and I can see why. Totally fun and practical! My desired find, an entertaining necessity, is this beautiful wine barrel plank serving tray with an inset bowl at Luxe Home Furnishings on Hillside at Douglas. These elegant serving trays are made in Victoria by Christina Hilborne using barrels from breweries and wineries. The supports are handforged from the barrel’s metal strapping. I can’t think of a more wonderful wedding or birthday gift that’s artistic and uniquely made. The splurge find was a simply gorgeous dining table and chairs by designer Michael Weiss at Jordan’s Interiors at 2269 Douglas Elegant serving tray by Christina Hilborne. St. The table in this collection is alder and African walnut. It’s available in many finish options and two- to 20-inch leaves. The chairs are available with countless fabric choices and stain finishes. I love the modern, yet very stylish lines, it has classic elements making it very sophisticated. These Victoria furniture stores offer so much, not just in what is on their showroom floors, but what can be ordered or customized for you often at no extra charge. So whether desired, practical or a splurge, just ask – you’ll be surprised at what’s available. Sheri Peterson has been an interior designer for 22 years in Victoria. The City of VIctoria would like to thank our sponsors for making Victoria Celebrates Canada Day possible!

Your stars for August 2015 Aries (March 21-April 19)

Expect a fantastic month ahead, because the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter are all helping your life be pleasant and easy-going. You might want to relax and do nothing. However, why miss this creative potential, which is enormous for you? Your self-confidence is strong! Explore the arts, sports, playful times with children, the theatre plus parties and social entertainment.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

You’ve been aware that this is a fabulous year for real-estate opportunities; and a chance to improve your home and family scene. Well, this month intensifies this already existing, favourable influence. Now your focus will strongly switch to home, family, your private life, and perhaps, a stronger interaction with a parent. Enjoy redecorating and refurbishing your home. Caution about coming on too strong with others. Lighten up and enjoy your surroundings.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

PRESENTED BY

AN INITIATIVE OF

You’ve been busy with social interactions. Many of you are reading and writing more than usual, as well. Nevertheless, as impossible as this sounds; this month, your life will get even busier and more fast-paced! (Gasp.) This is because you have something you want to say to others. Basically, you want to enlighten someone. This means you will be more aggressive about socializing with people because you want to reach out to them. Motivation makes a difference.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

GOLD SPONSORS

Your focus on money, cash flow, possessions and assets is strong and getting stronger this month! You want to boost your earnings or get a better job. You might also want to spend big. You need enough money for shelter, food and your exorbitant cell phone bill; but wise teachers have said that the more money and power you have – the more problems you have. Somewhere in the middle is the perfect balance. What makes you happy?

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

MEDIA PARTNERS

SILVER SPONSORS

BRONZE SPONSORS

This month the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter are all in Leo. This means pleasure, parties, sports and playful times with children for the rest of the summer. Naturally, this makes you more sociable, friendly and romantic. This is also the last run of Jupiter in Leo until 2026, so enjoy it. This is rare to have such a celestial focus on your sign. Make the most of it. Go after what you want with firm intention and positive expectations. If not now, then when? When you’ve got it, baby, flaunt it!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You want to cocoon. Actually this is a good thing because this is the perfect month to think about what you want your new ‘personal’ year to be all about. How do you want your new year to be different? Despite your impulse to be low-key, fiery Mars is stirring up energy with friends and groups. Mars will help you to excel in competitive, physical sports, as well as come out on top in group negotiations. Virgo rules!

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Your popularity is strong and getting stronger. August

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This month the Sun is at the top of your chart, which is the only time all year this happens. When it occurs, people not only notice you more, they admire you. Use this to your advantage! Make your pitch to your boss or ask for permission for something. Some of you will begin a romance with your boss or an authority figure. Continue to pursue avenues in travel, publishing, the media, medicine and the law. Lookin’ good!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This month, opportunities to travel and explore new avenues in publishing, the media, medicine and the law exist in abundance. Get outta town if you can. In addition, your gonads are in overdrive, and you’re pumped with sexual energy, as well as competitive energy about shared property, inheritances and insurance issues. Look for opportunities to travel for pleasure. This month is also an excellent time to study, if study is important in your life. (Can you spell onomatopoeia?)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Mars has been opposite your sign since June 25, creating problems with friends and partners. (Lord knows you’ve tried but what can you do when others are impossible?) Fortunately, the universe is generous to you now and will continue being generous in the next four weeks. This is why gifts, goodies and favours from others are flowing your way! This is the perfect time to ask for a loan or get a mortgage. Make the most of this good luck. Ka-ching!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This month the Sun is 180∞ opposite your sign, intensifying your focus on friends and partners. However, since the Sun is your source of energy, and it is now as far away from you as it gets all year, you will need more sleep. Seriously, recognize your need for power naps and such to get through this month because you are pumped to work hard now. This month also offers you a rare chance to observe your style of relating to others.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

This month you have a strong focus on your health and work. You want to make your work surroundings more attractive; and many of you will continue to boost your earnings. You will be more hands-on in your job and full of clever ideas. It’s important to line your ducks up in a row because an important career peak is just months away. But life is not all work and no play. Fiery Mars starts this month with sports and love affairs! Party on.
