by twins Chris and Jamie Ruscheinski. A fundraising goal of $250,000 was set prior to this year’s concert, which featured Blackjack Billy and other bands. “With the weather being so iffy, I was afraid we wouldn’t even come close to that number, figuring that attendance would be down,” Jamie wrote Monday on the group’s Facebook page, Twins Cancer Fundraising.

“We raised $275,000. I still can’t believe it.” The Ruscheinskis also thanked the many volunteers who help make the event happen. “You make us look like we do this every day,” Jamie wrote. “Our event rides on your energy and you guys bring it every single year.” see MORE PHOTOS › page 4

s a reporter, I sometimes wonder if anything I write makes a difference. But then something happens where you feel you played at least a little part in. And it feels good. I wrote a column during a hot stretch in June urging readers to donate water bottles to help the homeless. It turns out that column inspired a local to champion the issue. The result? The city is installing water fountains. In no way am I taking credit for this – Sybil Rowe and the city deserves it all. If you’ve met her, you know once she sets her sights on something, there’s little anyone can do to stop her. Last year, she hit the streets and collected 730 signatures for a petition to establish a dedicated park and a heritage designation for the majestic evergreens in Grandview Heights. And it seems my column set her on a new crusade. see SURREY’S › page 3

Surrey’s lucky to have Sybil on its side that was particularly hot. “They were desperate. “If they get dehydrated, we’re talking “You did a good thing,” Rowe told me about a very, very serious life or death over the phone last week. “I wouldn’t have situation,” she said firmly. even thought about it if I hadn’t read your Then a light bulb went off. story.” But Rowe couldn’t stop thinking “Why couldn’t the city install water about it, and made the drive from her South Surrey home to deliver water several times. fountains down there?” she asked herself. The city has ordered four fountains, said manager of operations Rob Costanzo. Two are coming from the City of Vancouver – which manufactures its own – and the other two are coming from the U.S. The city hopes to have the fountains and install them by the end of this week, said Costanzo. He noted that exact locations haven’t been chosen, but two will likely go to Newton and two to Whalley. So, is Rowe reveling in her success? Yes and no. While happy to see the city going ahead with the fountains, the lack of shade along the strip is now on her mind. “I would kill to get a little island of trees there.” If Rowe’s record is any indication, she’ll get those too. This is a woman who doesn’t take no for an answer. We’re lucky to have her.

❚ The federal Liberals target Surrey as its “number one priority area” in B.C. heading into the next general election. The Liberals want Surrey, and want it bad, veteran Senator Jack Austin told the Surrey Now. “It’s our number-one opportunity area for British Columbia.” ❚ A job fair in Newton draws huge crowds. The lineup outside of the Progressive Intercultural Community Services office stretched around the building, the equivalent of five city blocks. Security was on hand to ensure people stayed calm.

20 YEARS AGO, JULY 30, 1995, IN THE PAGES OF THE NOW: ❚ Surrey city management decides to give the city’s employees Christmas holidays, whether they like it or not. In a memo, city manager Doug Lychak informed some 1,200 workers that city hall will be closed for three weekdays during the Christmas season and staff will be required to take the time off. Gord Savard, president of CUPE union local 402, protested the closure. “There are many people who can’t afford to be off for three days. Christmas is a bad time to be losing a portion of your pay.” Compiled by Tom Zytaruk

NEWTON — One man’s detritus fills a storefront space on 137th Street, and people are pretty excited about it. Dirt-stained passports, rusted tools, a battered real estate sign, an embalmed deer head – all there for the viewing as part of “Gross Density Parcel,” an exhibit pulled together with great speed for the opening of AgentC Gallery Thursday evening (July 23). The new “pop-up” gallery is devoted to the kind of contemporary art that excites some and may puzzle others. “This is exactly what we’ve wanted to see in Newton for a very long time,” said Jude Hannah, a founder of the community group ReNewton, at the exhibit opening. “This street has such potential, and this is just fabulous – a wonderful art space, some amazing art.” For “Gross Density Parcel,” 10 artists sifted through a small mountain of debris at a vacant lot in White Rock, resulting in

an intriguing mix of sculptures, films, photographs and multimedia works curated by Debbie Westergaard Tuepah and Rhys Edwards, the AgentC Projects leads. The artists began visiting the site back in March, said Polly Gibbons, a South Surrey-based artist. “It was like an archeological dig trying to find out about this one man’s life, and it kept raising more questions,” Gibbons said. “Like, what happened here? Why is this man’s passport and cancelled cheques in the ground? Why are the (photographic) slides of his children buried in the earth? It was quite exciting.” Artist Carlyn Yandle made a giant “Charm Bracelet” from rusted bed springs and assorted old tools, including a machete, saw, grinder and wood plane. The exhibit curators first met with City of Surrey officials about six weeks ago. “It was all kind of a perfect storm, with the support of the city, a great group of artists, the curators,” Tuepah said. The city will pay close to $11,000 for the lease, insurance and marketing of the gallery

SEE FULL STORY, PHOTOS AT THENOWNEWSPAPER.COM space over the next six months, according to Sheila McKinnon, Surrey’s manager of arts services, with additional funding possible in the next budget. “The city,” added Tuepah, “has been open-minded enough and forward-thinking enough to understand what kind of impact culture has on a community – particularly a community like this that has had some negative things happen over the past year or so. I think culture really has the ability to transform an area like this.” In a related project, as part of Surrey’s “cultural corridor” concept, nearby storefront windows will soon be transformed with art installations, Coun. Judy Villeneuve told the Now. “I’m very thrilled about it because these are all local artists with a gallery to now call their own,” Villeneuve said. “Gross Density Parcel” is on view until Oct. 1 at the gallery, located on 137th Street just south of 72A Avenue. More details can be found at Agentcprojects.com.

Surrey loses Ed Griffin, among Civic Treasures SURREY — The city has lost one of its civic treasures. Writer and educator Ed Griffin died July 23 at Surrey Memorial Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He had also

suffered a severe stroke recently, according to Sheila McKinnon, Surrey’s manager of arts services. Griffin, a founder of the Surrey International Writers’ Conference, was named a Surrey Civic

Whalley’s Round-Up Café takes you back in time Story and photos by Amy Reid EDITOR’S NOTE: In our special series Waking up Whalley’s Corner, we are sharing stories from the area around 108th Avenue and King George Boulevard. In the weeks ahead, we will delve into its struggles, its triumphs and what lies ahead.

The menu hasn’t changed much, either, she said affectionately. “We just can’t seem to bust out of it, because this is what our tepping into the Round-Up clients want,” she said. I helped her with her shop when she was setting it up… She just gave us the money.” So they picked up and moved to Surrey, beginning a new adventure in life in a new town. Their two boys were two and four at the time. “It was busy,” she said of the diner when they first arrived. “It was very hard. Very hard…. We were open 24 hours at that time. We were 24 hours for years.” She said the couple hardly left the building because it was so busy. “I worked days, Orest worked nights. It wasn’t an easy road but it was good. We always enjoyed it.” Back then, after the pubs would close, the after-the-bar crowds would flock to the 24hour establishment. “It would be absolutely jam packed in here. Of course we had some bad people come. My husband, he handled it pretty good. “He kept a baseball bat behind the counter,” she continued, chuckling as she pointed over to the cash register. About 20 years ago, the 24hour service stopped and they now close at 5 p.m. “We just got tired of it,” she explained. “Enough’s enough, we said. We were always busy on the night shift.” But Goldie has many humorous stories of those

night crowds. She couldn’t stop laughing as she told one tale. As in any restaurant, they’ve had their fair share of customers run out on bills, she said. “But this one night four girls had eaten and ran on their bill. My husband, he jumped in his car and of course he goes around the block and here they are down the road hitch hiking. He stopped and picked them up. “They got driving a bit and one of the girls says, ‘That’s him! That’s him!’ He said, ‘Guess girls, where I’m taking you? I’m taking you to the cop station.’ “Oh, there’s been some good times,” she continued, smiling. “The good with the bad, and carry on.” So is the Round-Up’s end near? “Well I just have to make a phone call. They’re waiting for us,” she said with a chuckle. But she doesn’t see herself selling the place anytime soon; it’s too close to her heart. “No, not really. It’s here if I need to or want to,” Goldie said. “But I still come here most every day, and I love it. I just love it.” areid@thenow newspaper.com

Our view

Hits & Misses

A $2-million Band-Aid for traffic

HIT: Twins Chris and Jamie Ruscheinski’s annual Gone Country benefit concert raised $275,000 for cancer-related initiatives. The twins surpassed their goal of $250,000. For that, they are this week’s ‘Hit,’ along with the many volunteers who helped make it happen. Yeehaw!

T

he City of Surrey and federal government will split a $2-million bill to set up a “Travel Time Information System” that aims to relieve traffic congestion in the city. The system will use Bluetooth technology as a well as messaging signs along key truck routes in Surrey. Multiple routes are proposed for these detectors, which are designed to let motorists know what the least-congested routes are based on real-time traffic conditions. Any bit helps as driving in this city can be a real headache at times. But this is by no means a cure to traffic congestion here. It is a very expensive Band-Aid – a $2-million Band-Aid. The last Band-Aid project was the South Fraser Perimeter Road, which was supposed to remove big trucks from our residential streets once and for all. That hasn’t happened, has it? Besides the trucks, it is rare these days to drive about in Surrey without creeping through construction or having to queue up behind a long line of fellow frustrated motorists. At least the politicians and bureaucrats are trying to do something to alleviate congestion. They need to be seen to be doing something, as this is a big problem and will continue to get worse as more people move here. The “Travel Time Information System” might help, but it’s doubtful it will significantly diminish traffic congestion. It’s a stopgap measure. There will still be plenty of “stop” in traffic, and not much “gap” between bumper and fender. The Now

MISS: Ed Griffin lost his long battle with cancer on July 23. As one of Surrey’s civic treasures, he will be remembered for his cultural contributions to the city. In February, Griffin wrote an emotional article about his life – visit Thenownewspaper.com.

Column

Neighbours and annoyances go hand in hand SoLetItBeDone Tom Zytaruk

So let it be written... Ever try to write a column when people are hammering away – BAM BAM BAM – with hammers in the building next to you, on the other side of the wall? Well, it’s hard. I don’t know what they’re doing. Renovating, I guess. Building a better mousetrap, maybe. Perhaps conducting a scientific experiment to see what it takes to make a journalist go postal. I’m sitting in front of my Mac trying to write some kind of sensible opinion piece here, ostensibly for your entertainment

and God willing, edification. Instead, all this bugging has got me thinking about bugs. It makes me think that ants, bees and other such creatures existing oh-so-jammed-together are lucky that their heads, and therefore the ear-things attached to them, are so tiny. Ergo, tiny headaches. NOT LIKE THE ONE I’ve GOT, RIGHT NOW. But it’s all proportional, right. Do I have a big head? Dunno. Some people have told me I do, but I think what they’re really saying is I’m a jerk. Oh, there’s the drill now. Lovely electric drill. GAZUGA-ZUGAZUGA-ZUGA. Drill bit must be the size of a baseball bat. And – there it is – TWO hammers now, different beats, together with the drill. My God, won’t somebody please make it stop?! Amy Reid, the reporter sitting

nearby, is holding her head with both hands. Her mouth is open, but no sound is coming out. I think she’s making a silent scream, just like that painting. Can’t tell for sure, though, ‘coz it’s so freaking noisy in here. What’s that – are they yanking nails out of wood now? Oh, the humanity. Did you know that according to the world population clock there’s 7,331,690,732, no wait, 7,331,690, 821, no wait, 7,331,690,903, no... well, there’ll be a lot more of us by the time you read this. (Oh, there’s a tink, tink, tink now. High pitch. I think it might be a ball-peen hammer). Anyway, that makes for a lot of neighbours, doesn’t it? And we’ve all had ‘em. The early riser Harley fan. The stereo guy with bass set on stun. The loud talker. The screamer. The all-of-the-above idiot.

Well, for those of us who make it to 2050, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs project the world’s population to reach 9.6 billion by then. And that, dear reader, can only mean one thing: More neighbours. Ah? What new annoyances will be invented, between now and then? Think about it, eh. If ever there was a time to invest in interplanetary spaceflight research, and finding new planets to call home, it’s now. Also if somebody could invent a silent hammer, that’d be pretty cool too. ...So let it be done Tom Zytaruk is a staff writer with the Now. He can be reached at tom.zytaruk@thenownewspaper.com.

Your letters

Lighting up isn’t smart but we’re not all ‘dumb smokers’ The Editor, Re: “Hit dumb smokers hard,” the Now letters, July 23. It appears that Derek Coughtrey puts all smokers in the same boat. Just because some inconsiderate, ignorant smokers throw their cigarette butts out their car windows, all smokers should pay a 300 per cent increase in tobacco taxes? As a smoker for more than 40 years, I’m not advocating it’s good - far from it - but let’s put it into context. If that is the case, lets penalize all offenders of everything equally. Say, for instance, you put the wrong disposable in your blue box. Should we increase everyone’s property taxes by 300 per cent? What if you get caught watering your lawn, against the watering restrictions? Fine everybody? Charge the people responsible, not everybody. If you see an irresponsible person throwing a cigarette out their car window, take down the license number and report them when it is safe for you to do so. We may not be smart for smoking but we are not all “dumb smokers.”

Water strategy working The Editor, Re: “Developer-friendly mayor must assure us about water,” the Now letters, July 16. The population growth in Surrey is part of the region’s growth strategy. Metro Vancouver is expected to grow by 35,000 people per year for the next few decades, which will place demand on its water infrastructure. In order to provide adequate water supply to meet the population growth, Metro Vancouver, in conjunction with its member municipalities, has developed the Drinking Water Management Plan (DWMP). The DWMP envisions that the region has sufficient water from its current water sources until at least mid-century and there are plans to expand its water sources to meet the demand beyond 2100. The water conservation efforts by the residents of the region has significantly reduced the water consumption per capita. Specifically, the water consumption of Surrey residents has decreased significantly over the past 10 years, despite the population growth.

Rick Stannard, Surrey Jeff Arason, City of Surrey

Seniors very thankful The Editor, On July 9, a group of seniors from Elim Village in Surrey visited Boston Pizza on Lougheed Highway for dinner. While we were there, a complete stranger picked up our entire bill. Since that night, residents haven’t been able to stop talking about it and it was truly a wonderfully special experience for them. They were in awe of the kindness and generosity of a complete stranger and want to thank them in any way they good. We wrote a thank you letter to our anonymous Boston Pizza Hero, and are distributing the letter to newspapers and Boston Pizza in the hopes this thoughtful individual will receive our thanks.

Don’t be shy about fines

The Editor, While watching the evening news last week, it was announced that Vancouver had imposed a no-watering restriction and various other municipalities are stepping up their enforcement with increased fines. Delta’s fine is $400, while Surrey’s is $250. Surrey had issued 800 warnings but only four fines. This reeks of poor governing and gives naysayers more negative things to say, adding to Surrey’s already bad reputation. Smarten up mayor and council and get the directives and bylaws enforced – or step aside and let people who truly care about the municipality govern. R. Conley, Surrey Heather Owens, Elim Village

❚ Roses and a ‘big-man’ apology (to top the other coach’s) to Jennifer, who was working the scoreboard at Cloverdale Ball Park when things went awry. The visiting coach sent his runner from third on a fly ball, thinking there were two outs, when there was only one away. Our team took advantage of his mistake and made the double play to end the inning. Naturally (lol), their coach blamed the scoreboard, so we asked you to turn it off. Turns out, the scoreboard was deadly accurate and a few innings later, he apologized and we turned it back on. Thank you for doing a great job and I am sorry your scoreboard-keeping abilities were questioned! ❚ Roses and good karma to the people who stopped to help when I got into my accident at Highway 10 and 136th Avenue. A bouquet to the woman who stayed with me until help arrived. ❚ Roses to the Newton Safeway customer who found and turned in my small purse. Everything was still in the purse. Newton is a good community. There needs to be more focus on the positive and less on the negative .

❚ Rotten tomatoes to the taxi driver who drive off angrily at the King George station terminal just because my friend asked a simple question. What on earth is your problem? The next time we both see you we’re reporting you! ❚ Rotten tomatoes to the veterinary clinic in Fleetwood for not providing reminders to let dog owners know that our dogs need vaccines. How cheap are you people? It is your responsibility to let us know! We can’t remember everything. ❚ Hectares of rotten tomatoes to the mindless text zombies that still think it’s OK to text while you drive. I am a truck driver and drive all over the province. I have watched you swerve all over the roads, come into my lane head on, sit at green lights, run stop signs and so on. Enough is enough - time for $1,000 fines like Toronto. ❚ Rotten tomatoes to the tractor mower driver who every year seems to deliberately destroy the huge ripening blackberry crop in Hunt Road park. Why not wait a few weeks to let locals pick a gallon or two before turning it into a moonscape?

NEW WEST — A B.C. Supreme Court judge has rejected Gloria Zerbinos’ defence that she should be found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder in the stabbing death of her mother. Gloria Zerbinos, 30, is being tried for second-degree murder in the Nov. 8, 2012 death of her 43-year-old mother Panagiota “Yota” Zerbinos. The lawyers will be back in court in New Westminster on Aug. 6. Tom Zytaruk

NORTH DELTA — Delta has reopened to the public four popular North Delta parks it had closed earlier in July due to hazardous fire conditions. Thanks to cooler temperatures and recent rain, Delta Fire and Emergency Services has downgraded the fire danger rating from extreme to moderate. As a result, Watershed Park, Cougar Canyon Nature Reserve, North 40 Park Reserve and the Delta Nature Reserve are now open to the public.

SURREY — The Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP is closing its Newton office and transferring its operation to headquarters in Ottawa. The commission is an independent agency created by Parliament and is not part of the RCMP. Its purpose is to make sure public complaints

concerning RCMP conduct is examined fairly and impartially. Kate McDerby, spokeswoman for the commission, said the Surrey office, in the 7000-block of 137th Street, will close by mid fall. More people, she said, are lodging their complaints online these days. McDerby said it is “beefing up” its number of investigators. “It does free up some dollars,” she said of the decision to close Surrey’s office.

Virtual entertainment

Brothers bring escape game to Cloverdale Amy Reid Now staff Twitter @amyreid87

CLOVERDALE — What do a military base, a psychiatric unit, a haunted cabin and an antique museum have in common? Backdrops to a video game, perhaps? Well, kind of. They’re the settings of a virtual-turned-reallife game experience that’s been gaining in popularity in recent years: escape games. They’ve popped up in Richmond and Vancouver and, for the first time, one has opened its doors in Surrey. E-Exit creator Justin Tang, who brought the idea to Canada from Hong Kong, described the concept as the “opposite of Google.” “Google is bringing every real-life thing into the virtual world through the Internet. What we do is, we bring virtual entertainment into real life,” Tang told the Now. “Escape game is based on cellphone apps and computer games – and we brought it to real life.” Would-be escapees – two to seven players a game – have 45 minutes to solve puzzles and riddles in order to escape from one

Hardeep (left) and Mandeep Gill own the E-Exit facility in Surrey. (Photo: AMY REID) room to the next. Brothers Hardeep and Mandeep Gill first got the itch to open the Surrey E-Exit franchise after checking out the Richmond location’s prison game about a year ago – unsuccessfully. “We did not succeed, but never had so much fun failing at something,” said Mandeep, laughing. “So a few days later, we talked about it and thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to have one of these ourselves?’” On July 1, they officially opened in a 3,300square-foot space at 15345 Highway 10. After the first two weeks, they were surprised by how

Brokop’s ‘Patsy Cline’ show among 22 in Spectacular series

many people came back to play the same game. Some people have tried multiple times in a single day, Mandeep said, adding it can be somewhat addicting, not unlike your traditional video games. “One thing about our games is they’re very challenging. Only one per cent escape on their first try,” he continued. And in a world where technology is ingrained in most everything we do, many welcome the real-life experience, he added. More than 100 people have unsuccessfully tried to escape already, they both said, chuckling. Only six had escaped as of two weeks after opening. So, any tips from the brothers? While they won’t give much away, they do urge escapees to look closely – the clues can come from the strangest and most unexpected of places. “It’s not impossible, but it’s challenging enough that it’s fun,” said Mandeep. “You have to use brainpower and think outside the box a little bit.” Online, the facility is at E-exit.ca/Surreyhwy-10.

SURREY — The next Surrey Spectacular Series will feature 22 shows over a sixmonth period starting this fall. Tickets are now on sale for the 201516 series, presented by the City of Surrey at three venues under its Surrey Civic Theatres umbrella (Centre Stage at City Hall and, at Surrey Arts Centre, the Main Stage and Studio Theatre). The annual series begins Sept. 24 with “PechaKucha Night Surrey Vol. 4: Healthy Surrey” and closes March 10 with a “Classical Coffee Concert” featuring pianists Sarah Hagen and Søren Bebe. Next season’s trio of Arts Club on Tour shows are “Red Rock Diner” (Oct. 14-24), “In a Blue Moon” (Jan. 13-23) and “4000 Miles” (Feb. 17 to 27). Concerts in the Surrey Spectacular Series include alt-roots band The Nautical Miles (Nov. 5), Lisa Brokop’s “The Patsy Cline Project” (Nov. 7), John Mann (Feb. 13), guitarist Chase Padgett’s scripted “Nashville Hurricane” show and Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir’s annual Sounds of Christmas concert (Dec. 8).

The way I look at that facility is, it’s going to be a great place to hold this concert, and we just have to get one of these under our belts to show

people that it will be a real showplace.” The Stetson Bowl is capable of holding close to 10,000 people, with around 4,200 of those seated in the grandstands. One of my favourite animated movies, the video game adventure “Wreck-It Ralph,” kicks off the Movies Under the Stars series at Holland Park this Saturday (Aug. 1). Five fun films are part of the month-long series, hosted by the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association, and it’s free for all who show up at the park, at 13428 Old Yale Rd., Surrey. Each movie begins at dusk, but people should arrive at 5 p.m. for food, family-friendly activities and performances by local entertainers. For

Sponsors needed for Mosquito provincials

Heat take softball silver

Beau Simpson

Now staff Twitter @My_Grace_12

SURREY — Two young Cloverdale baseball teams are competing in front of a home crowd at this weekend’s double provincial tournament – and their association is looking for sponsors or gift baskets to help make the tourney a successful one. The Cloverdale Minor Baseball Association is hosting the U11 (Mosquito) AAA Tier 1 and U11 (Mosquito) A Provincial Championships, which start today (July 30) and run until Sunday (Aug. 2). The provincials are being held at Cloverdale Ball Park. The CMBA is seeking businesses or individual donors who would like to sponsor the tourneys. It is also looking for donations of silent auction prizes, gift baskets, or the like. If you can help make the tournaments a success, please email mosquitoaaaprovincials@gmail.com beau.simpson@thenownewspaper.com

DELTA — Grit and determination paid off for the Delta Heat 01 girls. The Heat – who could have used some of exactly that – battled through miserable, wet softball weather and played with heart to earn silver in the U14A provincials last weekend in Chilliwack. Surrey Storm 01A took gold with a 40 win in the final game on Sunday (July 26). The squad was undefeated in the tourney. The Heat 01 will now be one of three teams representing B.C. at the Canadian Nationals, which is being held from Aug. 4 to 9 in Victoria. Beau Simpson

Run for eyesight charity

Coached by Jimmy Vulcano, the Cloverdale Spurs U11 AAA Tier 1 team is ready to compete in this weekend’s provincials on their home diamond at Cloverdale Ball Park. Cloverdale Minor Baseball is looking for sponsors who can help make the tournament a success. If you can help, please email mosquitoaaaprovincials@gmail.com.

DELTA — World-class runner Norma Bastidas, a 47-year-old mother from Delta, is competing in what has been deemed “the world’s toughest foot race.” In support of Operation Eyesight, Bastidas is hoping to become the only Canadian to complete the 2015 Badwater Ultra Cup, a threeevent series that covers 217 kilometres non-stop from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, California. In 2014, Bastidas broke the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest triathlon.
