Freedom Ride brings in $10,000 for Magdalene House Society Seven energetic cyclists raised $10,000 for the Magdalene House Society by taking part in a regionwide bike ride that kicked off in Sylvan Lake on Saturday. Riders departed Sylvan Lake on Saturday morning and cycled approximately 90 kilometres to an area west of Caroline before returning to Sylvan Lake the next day. The money raised, which was collected through online donations and pledges, will help fund operations at the Magdalene House, a facility in Central Alberta that provides safe living for youth exploited by human trafficking. Annual operating costs at the house total around $250,000, and while the $10,000 raised is roughly the equivalent of operating costs at the house for just two weeks, the society needs and

Premiers must make up their minds on energy KENNETH P. GREEN AND TAYLOR JACKSON TROY MEDIA
Canada’s premiers concluded their most recent meetings last week with the release of Canada’s Energy Strategy, a document that “charts a path for shaping the sustainable development of Canada’s energy future.” The plan includes such undefined recommendations as to “promote energy efficiency and conservations,” “transition to a lower carbon economy,” “facilitate the development of renewable, green and/or cleaner energy sources,” and “promote market diversification” for Canada’s energy resources, among others. The real problem with the strategy is that, on many levels, it continues the somewhat contradictory approach the premiers have long displayed regarding energy development. While playing up the importance of the energy sector to the Canadian economy, the premiers’ report actually promotes policies that will cripple it. While lauding the industry that directly contributes 10 per cent of Canada’s GDP and directly and indirectly employs more than 900,000 Canadians, making it one of Canada’s most important industries, they then accept politically-derived climate change goals that would require most of that industry to stop growth in only a few years if the targets are to be reached. For example, the premiers accept the interna-
tionally set goal of limiting climate change to 2 C. But a recent study in Nature, a weekly journal, suggests that to achieve this Canada will have to leave 85 per cent of its bitumen in the ground. Another study of fossil fuel growth potential under the 2 C target, recently re-crunched by environmentalists, concluded that we must produce zero net new emissions by 2018. If the premiers mean what they say about that 2 C target, they’re accepting the end of Canada’s hope for fossil fuel production growth in only three years. Pipelines are another area that come in for the “we love you, we love you not” treatment. Pipelines, or rather “energy infrastructure,” did get some positive (although it appears hard fought for) attention in the national energy strategy, with the commitment of ensuring access to market for Canadian energy products. But while often trumpeting the benefits of pipelines, provinces have been slow to actually approve the pipeline infrastructure desperately needed to ensure that Canadian energy makes its way to refineries. From the West Coast to the East Coast, proposed pipeline projects continue to languish, contributing to increases in the amount of oil transported by rail. Indeed, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers projects that rail movements of oil will increase from 185,000 barrels per day in 2014 to between 500,000 and 600,000 barrels per day by 2018. The increase in trans-
porting oil and gas by rail in the absence of pipelines poses unnecessary risk to Canadians, since on a comparative basis pipelines experience fewer incidents. Another good example of contradictory energy policy is playing out in Alberta where the province’s new premier gave a veritable barnburner of a speech to oil sands industry executives during Stampede while increasing the carbon levy, establishing a panel to recommend further actions for the Alberta government to take on climate change, and striking a new royalty review which, if it’s anything like the last one, will only drive investment out of the energy sector or into competing jurisdictions. The premiers’ report recognizes the critical contributions that energy production makes to Canada’s economic health, and that demand for energy will only increase in the future. But there and elsewhere, the premiers accept any number of things that will cut against that contribution. It’s nothing new when politicians speak out of both sides of their mouths. Indeed, a cynical person might claim that’s the norm. But when it comes to a sector as important to the Canadian economy as energy, the usual kind of contradictory policy-making is something Canada can’t long endure. Kenneth P. Green is Senior Director and Taylor Jackson is a Policy Analyst in Natural Resource Studies at The Fraser Institute. © 2015 Distributed by Troy Media

Serenity desperately seeking caring homes for sheltered cats JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
neutered, Canada is faced with having a mass number of cats needing rescued, medical attention and a place to call home, said Crehan. “There are so many cats, and because there are so many, they are not valued,” Crehan said. “People say, ‘It’s just a cat and I can get one free,’ but then they don’t spay or neuter them, or don’t put any money into them. It’s a terrible habit we have in our society.” Serenity ensures all of its animals are put in safe and caring homes. The process of doing so sees potential owners filling out adoption applications before taking part in a meet and greet with the animal along with Serenity representatives. “We make sure the environment is safe and that things are as the people said they are,” Crehan said. “Most times it works out beautifully, and the animal is then placed.” When adopting a cat from Serenity, there is a fee of $125 — a fee that ensures that the cat is fully vaccinated, dewormed, vet-checked and spayed or neutered, which is
The Sylvan Lake and Area Serenity Pet Shelter Society currently has around 11 cats in serious need of finding their forever homes, said the society’s president Melanie Crehan. These cats currently live in foster homes as the society does not operate out of a building. Crehan said the fostering system is in place to help the pets learn proper behaviour and social skills, such as being in a family atmosphere, which improves the chances of the pet being adopted. She said cats are extremely hard to find permanent homes for and can be waiting months — and sometimes even years — to be adopted. “I have a mother cat and her two kittens from last year,” Crehan said. “Some of the other littermates were adopted out, but no one has come for these ones.” Due to some cat owners not having their pets spayed or

cheaper than paying hundreds of dollars for a cat from a pet store, Crehan said. She said Serenity offers a helping hand all across Central Alberta, and to police departments who call for assistance in animal rescue. Its rescued animals are taken to the Rimbey Veterinary Clinic for any necessary treatment, Crehan said. Serenity’s monthly veterinary bill, she added, is typically upwards of $2,500 to $3,000. That’s why the organization hosts fundraisers like ‘Strutt Ur Mutt,’ which will take place at Centennial Park on Aug. 8. There dog owners can dress up their mutts and parade them around the perimeter of the park for a chance to win prizes. Money will be raised through entry fees and donations. Crehan said she hopes to raise at least $1,000 from the event to give Serenity some desperately needed money. “Right at the moment, our bank account is very low,” she said. “Realistically, $1,000 would help us with half a month’s vet bill.” The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registrations will be accepted on the day and leading up to the event. Registration forms will be available at the Sylvan Lake Farmers Market on both Fridays prior to the event. Police suspect speed and alcohol as factors in fatal crash near Rocky Police say speed and alcohol might have played a role in a collision that left a 15-year-old girl dead near Rocky Mountain House last week. Emergency crews were called to the scene of a sin-
gle-vehicle rollover southwest of the Rocky Mountain House townsite at around 10:44 p.m. last Friday. The driver of a northeastbound vehicle on Highway 752 — known locally as Cow Lake Road — was said to
have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and strike an approach. The vehicle rolled a number of times before coming to rest on its roof. Police say the driver was ejected from the vehicle,
while the vehicle’s other three occupants were believed to have not been wearing seatbelts. A 15-year-old girl was declared dead on scene, while the vehicle’s 21-yearold male driver was taken to
hospital in Calgary via STARS Air Ambulance. At press time, he was listed in critical condition. Another 17-year-old girl was taken to hospital in Edmonton via STARS, and at press time was in serious but stable condition. A 19-year-old man was transported via ground ambulance to hospital nearby. He was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries before being subsequently released. Police on Saturday said they believed both speed and alcohol were involved in the collision, which is still under investigation by Rocky Mountain House RCMP and the Calgary Medical Examiner’s Office.
Charges were pending at press time. An update is expected as further information on the incident becomes available. Names of the individuals involved have not been released. Rocky and District Victim Services has been providing assistance to those affected by the incident. Police on Tuesday said another collision in the area — this time on Monday between a small car and a gravel truck about 10 kilometres west of Rocky Mountain House — claimed the life of a 20-year-old man. Charges in that incident are also pending. - FULLARTON

“IF ONLY” AND “NEXT TIME”
There’s a world of difference between “if only” and “next time.”“If only” looks backward; “next time” is a look forward. “If only” is a word of defeat; “next time” is a word of hope. “If only” with its expressions of regret, and self-pity is a protest against God. “Next time” is a vote of confidence in the future and an affirmation of faith in God who is always doing a new thing. No matter what happens, no matter what our circumstances, we can affirm with conviction “next time” because our God is a God who is “doing a new thing,” making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” The power to live by “next time” rather than “if only” can only come from God. God is more interested in your future than in your past. God is more concerned about what you can yet become than what you used to be. God gives us a mission and a purpose as he calls us to be his witnesses of this joyous news to all the world. What might that be? God’s new activity with us will involve
reaching out with our message to the community in new and fresh ways even as we press on with renewed worship, revitalized learning, building renovation and reorganizing for mission. God’s new activity with us will involve creative new ways of faith formation in the lives of all our people, but especially our young. God’s new activity with us will involve fresh forms of worship that engage all of us in song, reflection, and praise. God’s new activity with us will include being open to new ideas that none of us have had yet. God gives us the gift of a future that can be free of “if onlys” and filled with “next times.” It’s a future filled with joy that continues with Christ on through eternity. Prepare to let go and let God take control over your worries. Prepare to make rivers in the desert, make all things new. Stop the “if only’s” and start to prepare for the “next times!” - Rev. Jin Woo Kim

Participants being sought for urgent care golf tournament fundraiser With just over two weeks until the first annual Golf for Urgent Care tournament, there’s still time to register for the event being held in support of a vital community cause. Sylvan Lake and Area Urgent Care Committee members spent the afternoon on Friday at Meadowlands Golf Club — where the tournament will take place Aug. 14 — to not only promote the event, but also to raise awareness of the community’s ongoing pursuit of an urgent care facility. With around 70 golfers signed up for the event, registration is currently floating around half capacity, meaning there’s still plenty of time and space for community members to get involved. “Urgent care has been identified as a priority for the community, and the tournament is designed to raise awareness for our cause,” said Urgent Care Committee chair Susan Samson. “We’re committed to the task at hand.” As well as raising awareness, that task involves raising funds toward the eventual purchase of medical equipment for the sought-after facility, she added. To that end, the Urgent Care Committee has set a $20,000 fundraising goal to add to the $66,000 already raised in support of the cause. And with the funds steadily accumulating, Samson hopes the province will take note of the community’s rallying efforts, and confirm that funding for such a facility will arrive sooner rather than later. Registration for the Aug. 14 tournament can be carried out online at donate.dthealthtrust.com/sylvangolf. Sign-in for the tournament begins at 11 a.m., with tee-off scheduled for noon. A prime rib dinner will follow at 6 p.m. A $150 registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, dinner and refreshments, with all proceeds going toward the urgent care initiative — further details of which are outlined at sylvanlake.ca/urgentcare. - NEWS STAFF

Beach Book Buddies bring literature to the lakeshore The Sylvan Lake Municipal Library has come up with a unique way for beachgoers to keep up with their summer reading. Its Beach Book Buddies program sees books distributed free of charge along the lakeshore to anyone who’s interested in reading them. Library staff and volunteers can be seen several days a week throughout the summer pulling the mobile collection in a small wagon. “(The books) are discards from our collection, or dona-
tions that have come in that we can’t use in our collection,” said library technician Tammy Montague. Montague said patrons have so far responded extremely positively to the program, which emphasizes the value of reading throughout the year. But the program is about much more than just promoting literacy, she added. A small but non-mandatory donation jar situated on the wagon offers the chance for patrons to provide the library with financial support, while the very presence of the wagon itself can create something of
a social atmosphere for bookworms within its vicinity. The wagon is filled with a wide selection of paperback fiction geared toward all ages when it leaves the library, and is typically around half empty by the time it returns, said Montague. As of last week, around 100 books had been given out since the program began at the start of July, and library programmer Corrie Brown has witnessed its positive effects first hand. “Once they realize we’re not selling the books, they are very excited and they ask us about it,” she said. “The kids especially just love it. They go through it like it’s a candy store.” Beach Book Buddies can most often be found traversing Lakeshore Drive and Centennial Park on Mondays and Wednesdays as well as other days when the weather permits. Money collected through donations supports library programming and helps purchase new books and other materials. - NEWS STAFF

A look back: Sylvan Lake’s tour boats The following pictures were submitted by the Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society as part of a series celebrating the society’s 20 years of existence this year. The Archives Society is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. at its new location in the lower level of the town’s Municipal Government Building.
T The Lady Victress was o one of the first larger b boats to tour the lake. It was owned by the S Sea Cadets at their c camp on the south s shore of the lake who u used it for their own purposes.
The Maple Leaf was a large motor launch with a fringed top built by Mr. Jennejohn — ‘Alberta’s farmer boat builder’ — on his farm near Vulcan. Mr. Jennejohn began boat building as just a hobby until he found there was a need for them. He brought the boat to Sylvan Lake via Calgary and used it to take people on cruises around the lake for a fee. After a few years the Maple Leaf was lost by fire so was replaced by Mr. Jennejohn with a larger boat.
T second boat was The c called the Norell a after the Jennejohn c children, Norman a and Eleanor. It was 3 feet long and 10 38 f feet wide, and powered by a sixcylinder motor. It was driven by Bert David, who also owned an outboard motorboat for taking smaller groups on tours. Many young people learned to water ski from this boat as well. The Norell was operated until the 1950s when it was ‘beached’ and left — only to be blown up one night. T The Miss Mermaid was 46 feet long, 14 w feet fe wide and powered p by a diesel motor, with a paddle m wheel. Both decks w were used for w sightseeing, s and meals were served on the lower one. A luncheon and a dinner cruise were scheduled every day during the summer season. It was owned and operated by Al and Miriam Carruthers from 1992 to 2005. Summer visitors from many countries were often among the passengers.

Crash near Rocky Mountain House claims life of 20-year-old man

A 20-year-old man is dead following the second fatal crash near Rocky Mountain House in less than a week. Police say a small car carrying three people on Monday drove through a stop sign and collided with a gravel truck’s
loaded quad trailer at the Highway 11 and Highway 756 intersection about 10 kilometres west of town. A 20-year-old man, who was a passenger in the car at the time, was pronounced dead on scene, while the car’s
20-year-old male driver was taken to hospital via ambulance and released shortly after. A 17-year-old girl was taken via ambulance to hospital in Red Deer, and at press time was in stable condition.
The gravel truck’s 52-yearold driver was treated on scene. Charges are pending in the incident, which is still being investigated by Rocky Mountain House RCMP and the Calgary Medical
Examiner’s Office. Names of the individuals involved haven’t been released. A 15-year-old girl was killed in a separate incident southwest of Rocky Mountain House on Highway 752 last
Friday, when the vehicle she was travelling in rolled before coming to rest on its roof. Police say they believe speed and alcohol were factors in that incident, which is also still under investigation. - FULLARTON

Buccaneers remain upbeat despite Monarchs loss JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The Fort McMurray Monarchs were victorious in keeping their second spot after defeating the Central Alberta Buccaneers 33-9 during men’s Alberta Football League action at MEGlobal Athletic Park in Lacombe on Saturday. With the Buccaneers not playing their best, the game simply did not go as planned, said team chairman and linebacker Todd Lewis. “We came into the game wanting to win, but we didn’t play to our potential,” he said. “We took a lot of mental errors and penalties, and we just weren’t firing; we weren’t executing the way we should have.” The team took several penalties during the game and the Monarchs took advantage. Nonetheless, Lewis feels the Buccaneers undoubtedly have what it takes to beat quality opposition, and have proven their ability to do so throughout the season. “Once we start practicing and learning the systems and have team chemistry, then we will be able to use the talent we have and be able to pull quality wins,” he said. Being in third, where the Buccaneers currently sit, isn’t a disappointment by any means, he added, but he knows the team can play better than what the records indicate. Going forward, he hopes the team can find solutions to fix their problems, which he knows will help them return to their winning ways when they face the Monarchs again later this season. “I believe if we fix those problems, we will beat Fort McMurray,” he said. The team’s next scheduled game is against the fourthplaced St. Albert Stars on Aug. 8 in Lacombe, where the Buccaneers will aim to defend their third spot. “It’s going to be a great game,” Lewis said. “They are a good team and they have a really solid defence and a very solid running game.” Sylvan Lake’s Alex Ledwos, who plays as an offensive lineman for the Buccaneers, said he’s optimistic about the team’s chances of success against the Stars, and assured they’d be heading into the game fully prepared. “We have to come to practice, be prepared and get into the game,” he said. “If we can eliminate some of those mistakes, we are a contender for the league championship this year.”

Sylvan Lake fortunate to host life-changing Chinook Triathlon SCOTT MCDERMOTT SPECIAL TO THE SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The Chinook Triathlon Festival (voted one of the best races in Alberta in 2014) has moved from Calgary to Sylvan Lake due to logistical challenges in Calgary, and will run here this coming weekend on Saturday, Aug. 1. I am really excited to see this race in good hands again (through pro athlete and all-around great guy Jordan Bryden), and eager to see it get past the challenges we have had in recent years. A race like this is amazing for what it can create, and I am living proof of that. Personally, I am very excited to race at home again in Sylvan Lake for the first time in 10 years! For me, this race (even though it is a different course, etc.) holds a very powerful history, and really has created an entire direction in my life that has been incredible. When the race was held in 2004, it sparked something in me, a curiosity: Could I complete a half Ironman distance? Could I complete a triathlon at all? I had no idea, but I knew a good friend that had done a triathlon, and I knew that I could swim a bit as a kid and was comfortable in the water. I taught cycling class, so even though I didn’t own a road bike, I could pedal, and I used to run in high school, so I thought I would try it. I hired a coach and trained. And I trained, and I trained. I started to read triathlon magazines and watching triathlon DVDs. I bought a bike and a trainer for my basement, and a wetsuit for when spring eventually arrived (it was October, after all). I re-learned to run again, and spent hours and hours nearly drowning in the pool. Soon spring came along, and I raced my first sprint distance, then an Olympic distance, then the Sylvan Lake Half Iron! It was a cold and rainy day, and I was SO nervous! I made quite a few rookie mistakes, but I still had a GREAT day and
Scott McDermott placed eighth in my age group. I got a roll-down spot for Ironman Canada — set for five weeks later. I had five weeks to double all my distances and taper (ease off) before the big show. I had only been to Penticton once before, and knew nothing about it, but before too long, I knew it very well. Training was really hard, but I managed, and at the end of August in 2005, I finished my first Ironman in under 12 hours, thus completing my first-ever marathon as well. I was SO hooked! Since then, I have completed in five more Ironmans, two Ultramans, have been on Team Canada for the World Long Course Championships in Holland and Australia, and have raced all over the United States and Canada. I became a nationally-certified triathlon coach, worked with some great
people to start the Sylvan Lake Triathlon Club (I am the president and coach), started coaching Masters swimming at the pool, started a running clinic, and became a race director and title sponsor for the BBF Sprint Triathlon in May of each year. All of this because of one race, located in our hometown. I am just one guy; imagine how many others have been impacted! Case in point: One of my friends and a client, Lyle Katchur, contacted me to help train him when he was over 340 pounds. We worked together for a few years, bringing him down to under 200 pounds, and I had the joy of coaching him further to several marathons, Spartan races and shorter triathlons. This past weekend, he crossed the finish line at Ironman Canada — an astounding feat for someone who could hardly move four years ago. The list of Sylvan Lake Ironman finishers (that I know of or am involved with) stands at eight people so far — Dwayne, Scott, John, Lyn, Shelley, Rita, Brian and Naomi. Add in the number for Half Iron and shorter triathlons, and I bet we are at around 40 or 50 local athletes that have jumped into the sport. For a town of 13,000, that is pretty impressive, and I am confident that with this race now in great hands, we will see further growth in this sport. Through swimming, biking and running, I have coached over 400 people, and all because of one local race. Imagine what will happen next as more and more people are impacted by this amazing sport! So if you have a chance to volunteer, please do! Maybe you will be inspired enough to try something new, and your life will change too! Happy training! Scott McDermott is the owner of Best Body Fitness in Sylvan Lake. He is a triathlon coach, personal trainer, author, speaker and father. In November, he will represent Canada again at the Ultraman World Championships.

ing the Red Deer Braves 8-6 in the final. The tournament marked the first time the Lightning players have played at such a high level, and head coach Travis Smith feels they did themselves proud. “The level of competitiveness was up a notch or two, and being able to see that and play at that higher level was good,” he said. “It’s good to know that we can play with these guys.” The Lightning’s game against the Stettler Sliders on Saturday was momentarily interrupted due to heavy rain, but that did nothing to halt the team’s momentum. After the diamond was cleared with the assistance of about 20 volunteers, the Lightning went on to win the game 16-4, in what Smith says was the highlight of his team’s week-

DURWARD Alice Christina Mary 1910 - 2015 Alice Christina Mary Durward of Evarts, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Lacombe Extended Care Facility on July 17, 2015 at the age of 105. Alice was born on June 17, 1910 in Elgin, Scotland, the third child of Peter and Maggie Cameron. The Cameron family immigrated to Canada in 1912 and initially settled in the farming community of Ferintosh, near Camrose, Alberta. Shortly thereafter, the Cameron family moved to a farm in the Marianne District, and it was here that Alice attended the Marianne school for her first eight years. The Camerons relocated to the Evarts District in 1924 where Alice completed her education. Alice met her future husband, Harry Durward, who had emigrated from Scotland to the Winterburn area before he moved to the Marianne district in 1929. In 1939 Alice joined Harry in Kamloops, where they were married. The Durwards continued to live in Kamloops before moving to Vancouver in 1942 when Harry gained employment in a steel works company. In 1944 their son, Wilson was born and in 1946 Harry and Alice returned to the Evarts district to take up farming on the PN Cameron home quarter where Alice had grown up. Alice continued to live on the “farm” until 2005 when she moved to the Sylvan Lake Seniors Lodge where she resided until 2013 when a series of health episodes necessitated her move to a long care facility in Lacombe. By her own admission, Alice was a “farmer”... proud of her farming heritage and intent on being actively involved in its continued stewardship until the end. Alice believed in community participation. She was an energetic member of both the Evarts Ladies Aid and the Evarts Community Club. Alice also had a long association with the Benalto Agricultural Society - first as a child exhibitor during the Fair’s formative days, latterly as a dedicated Director and finally as a proud recipient of a Life Membership in the “Ag Society”. Alice’s community activity was not limited to the purely secular. She was a regular member of the Evarts Presbyterian Church until it closed, and subsequently of the Sylvan Lake Memorial Presbyterian Church where she was a faithful member of the Senior Choir for many years. Alice was predeceased by her husband Harry in 1982. She is survived by her son Wilson of Burnaby, British Columbia as well as five nephews and nieces: Robert (Muriel) Bramall and Dennis (Ardis) Bramall of Evarts, Fraser (Phyllis) Bramall of Gaetz, Peter (Barbara) Bramall of Tokorora, New Zealand, and Allison Storey of Courtenay, BC as well as many grand, great-grand, and great-great-grand nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held in the Sylvan Lake Memorial Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at 2:00 pm after cremation has taken place with the Reverend Joanne Lee officiating. In lieu of floral tributes, friends may wish to donate memorial tributes in Alice’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be made by visiting www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca WILSON’S FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM serving Central Alberta with locations in Lacombe and Rimbey in charge of arrangements. Fundraising - Seven local Girl Guides and two adult leaders have been hard at work fundraising for the upcoming nine-day Guiding Mosaic to be held at Camp Woods near Sylvan Lake next year. They’ve take on the challenge of raising the $1,100.50 required of each girl on their own, and, with the generous support of the community through a bottle drive and cookie sales, are getting close to attaining their goal. The Sylvan Lake Bottle Depot has a bin on site accepting donations toward the cause, while a number of other businesses have also been extremely supportive. More fundraising initiatives are planned for the future. SUBMITTED

Slide the City sees 50 Street temporarily transformed into giant slip-and-slide A large portion of a main thoroughfare in Sylvan Lake was temporarily transformed into a giant slip-and-slide on Saturday. Slide the City — complete with its 1,000-foot-long slipand-slide, live music and plenty of smiling faces — hit 50 Street (Centennial Street) for the day, and attracted town residents and visitors by the hundreds. All in all, organizers say about 1,800 registrations were recorded in advance of the event, with an estimated hundreds more carried out on site. But it was more than just the numbers that made the
event’s Sylvan Lake stop a successful one, according to event director Andrew Lacanienta. Seeing so many people having such a good time, he assured, made it all worthwhile. “It’s just a good time for everybody, and with the music and the food trucks, it just makes it an all-around fun place to be,” he said, adding he never ceases to be amazed by the enormity of the event. “Everyone played on a slip-and-slide when they were kids, but it was like 10 or maybe 15 feet long. The fact that it’s a 1,000-foot-long by 24-foot-wide slip-and-slide is just incredible.”
Rylee Shuman and Mattea Snelgrove have a blast while sliding down Centennial Street during Slide the City on Saturday. JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN
Carvella Café OUR WEEKLY ENTREES • Available 5-8pm
Lacanienta said the town proved a most welcoming host of the event, commending Town of Sylvan Lake special events and programming co-ordinator Michelle Morrison in particular for her role in bringing it to town. “She did a lot of footwork in getting it here,” he said. He encourages Lakers to keep an eye on the event’s schedule for the next summer season, as another Canadian tour is expected to take place. Details of dates and locations haven’t yet been confirmed. “Look for it in the future, have a good time, be safe and have fun.”
