FEDERAL ELECTION

Puttin’ on the writs

Longest election campaign in Canadian history looming C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

Though no official announcement has been made, national media has all but confirmed that Prime Minister Steven Harper will drop the writ, indicating the official start to the federal election campaign, on Sunday. This will make it the

longest election campaign in Canadian history. Kootenay Columbia MP David Wilks says he has not been told anything officially. “I only know what the media is reporting, I have not been told by the Party,” Wilks said Thursday morning. “The media seems pretty sure. They expect the writ to be dropped, which will make for a long campaign.”

A spectacular evening of rock at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook. Theory of a Deadman (above) achieved their hard rock mission in front of a sold out crowd. Events were interrupted when TOADM’s smoke machines caused the fire alarm to go off at the theatre. The crowd reluctantly evacuated, and thought about their rock and roll lives for about 20 minutes til the fire department gave the all clear. The show resumed with an even higher energy than before. Since the very visible Bavarian Esso building on Wallinger Ave. was torn down, a common question popping up is - what will happen with the lot? As has been reported in the Bulletin several times, options on the lot are limited because of its past as a gas station. Without hugely expensive remediation, the current zoning for the property will only allow a similar business or a public space/park. Council has not made a decision on what the final use of the property will be, but is

inviting public suggestions. One of the ideas being floated that has gained some steam over the spring and summer is moving the Cenotaph to this location. Many feel that since the closure of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Kimberley Branch that the Cenotaph has been somewhat abandoned and a new, highly visible location would be more appropriate. Council has talked about the idea, and agreed that it would require grant money to move the cenotaph, but haven’t ruled it out. The Cenotaph currently stands in the

Not just in theory, but in the flesh

Theory of a Deadman, The Standstills, at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook It was rock at full throttle Wednesday, July 29, with Theory of a Deadman taking the stage at the Key City Theatre. More than 600 people, of all ages and from around the region, sold out the theatre to take in the Canadian hard rock band from Delta, B.C., a group one usually sees performing in large arenas. The show was a presentation of Kootenay Concert Connection. Tyler Connolly (guitar, lead vocals), Dave Brenner (guitar), Dean Back (bass) and Joey Dandeneau (drums) ran through their repertoire of hits, showcasing their newest material as well as more familiar numbers. Opening the show was the hard rock duo The Standstills, featuring Jonny Fox on guitar and voice and Renee Couture on drums. Two songs into Theory of a Deadman’s set, the band’s smoke machine caused the theatre’s fire alarm to go off. By protocol, the theatre had to be evacuated, and so the throng did — the bemused audience and musicians exited in orderly fashion and hung about outside, until the Cranbrook Fire Department gave the all clear — a smoky interlude of about 20 minutes. TOADM resumed the show with equal if not more energy, and rocked the house for another hour.

Veterans’ Maintaining Northstar Rails group to Trails is a collective effort would prefer to see Cenotaph moved Chris Ne wel For the Bulletin

From Page 1 Earlier this month, Council received a letter from Cindy Postnikoff of Military Ames, a local veterans support group, supporting the move of the Cenotaph to Wallinger Ave. The veteran’s group, Postnikoff wrote Council, is concerned about the current state of the Cenotaph where it sits in what she calls a state of deterioration. “We would like to convey the dishonor this implies to our War dead and all veterans. We understand there is a strong initiative to move the Cenotaph site to the empty lot on the corner of Wallinger Ave. and Spokane Ave. We see this as a very positive move and a very good location for a new Cenotaph. “We would like to indicate the immense interest of Military Ames in being a part in the proposed project. The veter-

ans have voiced a strong concern for the future of the Cenotaph and have suggested they would like to be a part in not only having some input in designing a new site but maintaining it at some level as well. Might I add you will not find another group of people that have as much honor and admiration for the entire meaning of this proposed site.” “I’m pleased to see the letter,” said Coun. Darryl Oakley. “It’s great to see the community reach out to the City and offer to work with us. It’s a sign the community is ready to get going on this.” “Are we moving on it?” asked Coun. Kent Goodwin, to which Mayor Don McCormick replied that there have been other ideas coming in as well. “A public space and a Cenotaph are not mutually exclusive,” he said.

Have you walked, run, rode or rollerbladed on the Northstar Rails to Trails? If so you are one of the 25-30,000 who do every year. The trail is popular attraction in the East Kootenay which was officially opened in May 2012. It took a lot of work by some very dedicated volunteers to make the trail happen. Now that the trail is open and hosting such a vast population of users, how is it maintained? Again by a number of volunteers. The Northstar Rails to Trails Society manages the trail in cooperation with the Cities of Cranbrook, Kimberley and the RDEK. The society holds a AGM in the spring and elected directors meet throughout the season to plan future projects, deal with trail issues, seek funding and work with various partners to maintain the trail structure. To welcome the world the society currently maintains Facebook and a website. www.northstarrailtrail. com, https://www.facebook.com/NorthStarRails2Trails, There are a large number of organizations and individuals who have contributed and

the society would like to thank them for their support. These contributions have been in the forms of: financial support, value in kind support and/or as volunteers. As long weekend approaches, campfire ban remains Tre vor Cr awley

With the long weekend coming up, there are more than a few people planning to load up the trailers to head out for some camping. However, the Southeast Fire Centre is reminding everyone that a campfire ban remains in place over the region as conditions remain hot and dry. The campfire ban, which was implemented on July 3rd, is part of additional restrictions banning Category 2 and Category 3 open fires. Specific prohibited activities • Campfires (fires smaller than a half-metre by a half-metre high) • The burning of waste or other materials • Stubble or grass fires of any size over any area • The use of fireworks, sky lanterns, tiki torches, chimineas,

burning barrels, or burning cages of any size or description. The prohibitions cover all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but do not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws and is serviced by a fire department. Check with local authorities to see if any other burning restrictions are in place before lighting a fire. The prohibitions do not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane, or briquettes, or to a portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating that uses briquettes, liquid or gases fuel, as long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres. So far this year, there have been just over 1,300 fires across the province. Of those, 415 have been human caused, while 900 have been lightning-caused. In the Southeast Fire Centre juris-

diction, crews have responded to 386 fires this season—63 of which have been human-caused. In fact, one campfire in the Southeast Fire Centre was responsible for a wildfire, according to Fanny Bernard, a fire information officer. “That’s just one that escaped and lead to an actual forest fire,” she said. “Not only is a human-caused fire preventable, but this one was in direct violation of the campfire prohibition. “…So no campfires are allowed at all in the Southeast Fire Centre anywhere.” Bernard says that even when the region gets some rain, such as this past weekend, it’s not enough to affect the long-term fire danger rating. “So any kinds of gains or improvements on the fire danger rating is temporary and localized, so the indices are expected to

bounce back with this hot and dry weather we’re expecting,” she said. Anyone found in contravention of a fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. For more information on the fire bans and real-time updates, visit the BC Wildfire website at www.bcwildfire.ca or search for ‘BC Forest Fire Info’ on Facebook. To report a wildfire or open burning violation, call 1-800663-5555 or *5555 on a cellphone.

have all the other identified candidates.” If the writ drops, things will change for Wilks as he moves into campaign mode. “I won’t be doing what I am today which is funding announcements,” he said. “I have more on Friday, in Revelstoke, Golden, Invermere, Canal Flats and Cranbrook. Once the writ drops the focus will be on the campaign.” Green Party candidate Bill Green of Kimberley, says that the campaign is already well underway and the writ dropping won’t change that. “I have been campaigning full-time since July 17th, and will continue to campaign as hard as I can until the election,” he said. “I have a very strong and dedicated campaign team. So whether the election campaign period officially starts over the coming long weekend or as late as mid-September makes no difference to our campaign. “I know that the Conservative Party is looking to out-spend all of the other parties during the official campaign period, My focus is not on how

much we can spend but, instead, on how much I am able to directly connect with Kootenay-Columbia voters. I also want to convince younger voters that their votes are important and will make a difference in this election. I find that many young voters are motivated by the Green Party message about voting for the positive changes we need to make through federal government action, including on climate change and building a new, green economy and green jobs.” Liberal candidate Don Johnston says he is ready but very disappointed in the early dropping of the writ, particularly in terms of what it will cost the Canadian tax payer. “I find it astounding that they would consider that length of campaign,” Johnston said. “Particularly over our Canadian summer when it’s difficult to connect with the public who are enjoying the last days of summer. It’s hard to understand how it contributed to quality conversations.” Johnston says that the decision to go early adds $2.8 million each day to

the cost of the election. “You’re talking about $100 million over a campaign this long,” he said. “Political parties are eligible for rebates after the election based on spending. The Harper Conservatives rebate could be as much as $300,000 a day, paid for by the Canadian tax payer. It’s spending tax payer money to get Steven Harper elected. “It makes no sense. Everyone is already out campaigning because of the fixed election date. There’s no need to drop the writ this early.” Johnston says an interesting side effect of the writ drop will be that disgraced senators Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau will all be back on the payroll. “That’s just an interesting side effect of an unnecessary decision — disgraced and suspended senators back on the payroll the day the writ drops.” “I’ve had a clear campaign plan in place for months in preparation for an election on October 19th, and an early writ drop is not going to change that,” said Wayne Stetski, NDP candidate. “I’ve been door knocking, talking with citizens across the riding, making sure I know what the people of this area think. “I don’t believe that Canadians want a longer election campaign, but Stephen Harper doesn’t care how people feel. I have to assume that he believes there is some advantage to his party to start the official election period in the middle of summer, and for Stephen Harper, every decision he makes is an attempt to gain political advantage. “The NDP campaign team is strong in Kootenay Columbia and we’ve been working hard since the spring. Whether the writ is dropped this week or in September, our intention is to outwork Mr. Wilks every single day. “People in this area are ready to choose a strong voice to represent them in Ottawa. I’m hearing that message loud and clear. I believe the outcome in this riding will be the same, whatever the length of the official campaign, and I look forward to representing the people of this area as their MP.”

Funding mistake From Page 1 These capital projects include bridge work, Trans-Canada Highway paving, new avalanche mitigation work, trails work and building upgrades. But residents started questioning details of the announcement. They looked at breakdowns of the projects up for funding and noted that several of them had already started in the summer of 2014, some were significantly complete, and at least one — the $3.4 million Woolsey Creek Bridge upgrade in Mount Revelstoke park — had already finished. The Mountaineer sent an information request to Parks Canada, which responded that a total of $54.8 million worth of the projects announced were in fact from the 2014 budget, not the new infrastructure fund. The projects include a $3.3-million Trans-Canada Highway Bridge upgrade to an Illecillewaet River Bridge, a $35.2-million paving, guardrail and slope stabilization project on the Trans-Canada in Glacier National Park, a $12.9-million paving project in Mount Revelstoke National Park, and a $3.4-million rehabilitation project on the Woolsey Creek Bridge in Mount Revelstoke National Park. When asked about the discrepancy, Wilks acknowledged his error. “I made a mistake,” he told the Mountaineer. He listed several of the projects, admitting they were in fact 2014 projects. “So, that’s $32.6 million that was expensed to those projects. So the 2015 announcement should have been $123.4 million, which are the remainder of the projects that you had listed.” Wilks explained the discrepancy by saying the 2014 budget had only partly funded some of the projects, and that the remainder would come out of new infrastructure funding. Other candidates in Kootenay-Columbia weighed in on the incident Liberal candidate Don Johnston said he was troubled by the “mistake.” “ We know that the Conservatives will try to spin funding announcements from the current budget that actually will not come into play until

2017 or later,” Johnston said in a press release. With a budget that was just barely balanced it’s no surprise they now have to resort to borrowing funds “from previous years just to make the announcements that are so essential to keeping their jobs.” Johnston said his main concern is for local representation. “It is very worrisome that our MP presented factually inaccurate information in a release that was obviously crafted by party headquarters. Surely, he should know what projects have been funded previously and particularly those that have been completed. If he is too busy to join all candidate forums and talk to constituents, while using our money and financial announcements to support his campaign, then I would hope we wouldn’t be hearing about $32 million mistakes.” NDP candidate Wayne Stetski had similar thoughts. “All across the riding over the last few weeks, Mr. Wilks has been making massive funding announcements,” said Stetski. “And now he’s been forced to admit that at least one of those announcements was not genuine.” “Clearly, Mr. Wilks’ re-election strategy is dependent on big, flashy funding announcements that attempt to prove he’s doing a good job for the people of Kootenay Columbia. In fact, he’s even stated that he’s too busy making funding announcements to make plans to attend All- Candidate debates. And now, when one of those announcements is proven to be a misrepresentation, it tells a story of a politician who has entirely lost his way.” Green candidate Bill Green was more terse. My only comment on the recent raft of federal funding announcements is that the current Conservative government preaches fiscal restraint and practices seeking to buy votes with our tax dollars,” Green said. “From my door-to-door canvassing, the Conservative strategy clearly isn’t working. The Daily Townsman sought further comment from MP Wilks on the matter, but as of press time it was unavailable.

Margaret, Oh Margaret “Why is thinking something women never do? Why is logic never even tried? Straightening up their hair is all they ever do. Why don’t they straighten up the mess that’s inside?” My Fair Lady - A Hymn To Him.

S

tanding out in the mid-afternoon sunshine with two of my male neighbours sorting out local and national politics, I suddenly asked, “You guys ever hassle women? Verbally assault them?” You see, some time back my favourite – for the present time – columnist, Margaret Wente, wrote in the Globe and Mail “What women can learn from men.” As usual I enjoyed her scribblings but I didn’t altogether agree with her statements. How could I? She’s a woman. To start with, she made quite a few sweeping generalities. She wrote, ‘Men stand accused of sexism, harassment and micro-aggression against women’. I asked my neighbours if either one of them had been accused of sexism, harassment and micro-aggression against women. Harold admitted that he sometimes shouted at his wife. Fred said nothing. I personally did not think I had, but did wonder if, in the heat of some moment, in order to impress my male companions, I might have done. Men have always done this, especially if it is meant to harass their enemies.

Ms Wente isn’t sure whether men should act more like women or vice versa. Again, I think neither way. If men and women all acted in the same way, how would we notice which is which? Fred finally admitted that, sometimes, he passes comments on women’s appearance or behaviour. “Wolf whistles?” I asked and I wondered if my behavior down-town last summer had been considered an affront. I had seen a young woman approaching me. She was clad in a summer dress, she looked sensational and I think she knew it. I stopped, grinned at her like some aged chimpanzee, and said, “You just made my day.” The lady smiled; I’d made my point but hope I didn’t offend her. Peter Men, Margaret wrote, Warland get to the point. She wrote that two women will take for ages just to arrange a lunch date sometime, ‘picking the nits from each other’s fur like chimpanzees’. My research has shown me those two women later greeting each other, pecking each other’s cheek, as if they were preparing for a prize match. Men are more direct, she theorizes, but she neglects the fact that most men can only be direct if their wives or female companions will let them. I live alone but my daughter in distant Vancouver is able to jerk my string. Ms Wente feels that women vacillate too much. If Columbus had been a woman, she

feels, he/she would never have found America because he/she would have been wondering if his/her crew was all right about leaving port. However, I seem to recall that Cleopatra could move when she felt to time was right, Boudicca, queen of the Iceni, took off against the Romans without bothering to ask permission and Catherine of Aragon, later to be divorced by Henry VIII, took an army north to harry the Scots whilst hubby was playing soldier in France. No, women can make decisions and act but, unfortunately, when they act like men, everyone hates them. Look at P.M. Margaret Thatcher, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Premier Christy Clark. Men don’t vacillate, she writes. This is true. Most of my male acquaintances charge right ahead, far too often falling over their own feet in the process. But in many cases, their womenfolk won’t let them vacillate. When the garbage needs taking out, hints will fly like pigeons. When a tap needs to be replaced the words “Are you going to fix that, Henry, or shall I get a man in, one who knows what he’s doing?” start to fly. Most women with whom I have been acquainted over the millennium have demanded that I treat them with respect or they would have knocked me for a loop, and not with their feminine charms. I hope sincerely that they don’t act like men. Margaret Wente claims that manshaming has gone far enough; probably so has womanmocking.

Opinion/Events Gutting the New York Public Library

New York City’s Central Library Plan branch, which meant destroying seven stories of historic book shelves, built in was suppose to improve things. 1910 by the firm of Carrère & Hastings. The ‘plan’ was born in 2007, as a way Not only was there nothing wrong with for the financially-strapped institution to these beautifully carved adjustable not only try and make ends meet, but shelves (all 98 thousand of them), but the also to consolidate services in an effort to 3 million books they held were to be relocated in an offsite storage faimprove services to its cility. 17 million patrons. The second thing was the new plan expenditure for a sprawling urban library called for the gutting of the central system that has difficulty keeping toilet

paper, soap, and hand towels in the restrooms of its 88 branches.” Sherman’s article did exactly what he hoped it would do — create a firestorm of protest. Howls could be heard from across the planet, with petitions being signed, ‘save the library’ societies being formed, and lawsuits being launched. One trustee was taken aback by the global concern, stating the Library “has no identifiable constituency other than all of New York, and [apparently] the world.” Due to the incredible pressure the protests created, the New York Central Library Plan was scrapped in May of 2014. A release of of the trustees’ secret meeting minutes had shown the the plan would have cost the city 500 million dollars — which was one heck of a way to save money. Sadly, the protest was not in time to halt the gutting of the central branch. The bookshelves remain, but the books had already been removed to an offsite storage. Sherman feels the trustees were having one last laugh at the public who dared to question their judgement: “The empty stacks are the lasting image of controversy … take that wise guys.” Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

Compassion As Charity and Justice

L

ast week, I wrote about two of the primary ways in which the Bible reflects on the character and nature of God. The first way to speak of God as holy, set apart, separate. The second is to speak of God as compassionate, reaching out to embrace the world in love and destroying all the walls which human beings love to erect. I ended by saying that if I had to choose, I would always choose a religion of compassion rather than a religion of holiness. Holiness divides people. Compassion works toward unity. As I read the gospels, I see Jesus living out a religion of compassion. His compassion for the poor and the oppressed was unrestrained. Here are just a few examples. “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36) Compassion was the fire that fueled his healing miracles—“When Jesus went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick.” (Matthew 14:14) or in the healing of two blind men—“Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.” (Matthew 20:34) His parables are also filled with people who express their compassion—for example, the father in the Prodigal Son, or the Good Samaritan who acted on the basis of his compassion to care for and tend the man who had been beaten. Marcus Borg reminded us that compassion takes two forms in life: charity and justice. The word “charity” comes from “cari-

tas”, the Latin word for love. This is the personal form of compassion. When love moves our heart to reach out to someone who is in need, this is charity in that sense of caritas. When we respond to lonely, anxious, hungry, suffering people and try to meet their need, this is caritas. Charity seeks to heal people’s wounds, to meet their needs, to alleviate the suffering of each individual who crosses our path each day. The other form of compassion is justice. Whereas charity seeks to meet the needs of each individual, Rev. Yme justice seeks to eliminate the Woensdregt root causes of suffering. Justice is about transforming all those social structures and systems which produce poverty and homelessness, suffering and oppression. There’s a wonderful story (I forget where I first heard it) about townspeople along a river who began to see people floating downstream in distress, drowning, near death. With great compassion, they would throw out lifelines, row out in boats, and swim out to rescue the victims from drowning. The incidences, at first isolated, began to increase. Always, the townspeople would respond. Over time, they began to improve and expand their lifesaving abilities. Finally, one day, someone from the town suggested that they would better utilize their resources by going upstream to find out why people were falling in, or who was throwing them in, and try to prevent it. That gets at the heart of the difference between charity and justice. Charity throws out a lifeline to people caught up in the unceasing current of life. Justice, on the other hand, seeks to end the social strucLetters to the Editor

tures that create wounded people in the first place. Many people have remarked on these two elements (individual and social) of compassion. Martin Luther King, Jr. said “We are called to play the Good Samaritan on life’s roadside; but that will be only an initial act. One day the whole Jericho road must be transformed so that men and women will not be beaten and robbed as they make their journey through life. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it understands that an edifice that produces beggars needs restructuring.” William Sloane Coffin, long time preacher at New York’s Riverside Church reminded us that “The Bible is less concerned with alleviating the effects of injustice, than in eliminating the causes of it.” Both charity and justice are needed in our world. Jesus called for both. He embodied both. The question is do we favor charity over justice? In an unjust world, only the first response—charity—is acceptable to those in power. The work of faith–based groups is often lauded by government until they try to influence government policies to change the status quo. Dom Helder Camara, a Roman Catholic bishop from the poor Brazilian region of Recife said in the 1960s, “When I feed the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why they are poor, they call me a Communist.” John Dominic Crossan once said, “Charity gets you canonized; justice gets you crucified.” That is exactly where the religion of Jesus led him. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Dynamiters begin title defense against Rockies Nitros open season Sept. 11 in Invermere; home opener at Kimberley Civic Centre set for Sept. 12 against Golden

Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The Kimberley Dynamiters will open the 2015-16 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena in Invermere against the Columbia Valley Rockies as they look to defend their 2015 KIJHL title. The Nitros visits the Rockies on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. to open the new campaign. Dynamiters general manager Mike Reid confirmed the 52-game schedule Thursday morning. For Nitro Nation, the wait to welcome Kimberley’s junior hockey squad back to the Civic Centre won’t be a long one as the squad hosts the Golden Rockets in its home-opener Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. Less than a week after the home opener, the Dynamiters will embark on a season high six-game road trip from Sept. 18 through Sept.

27.

Across the 10-day swing, the Nitros will tour through the B.C. Interior, with a KIJHL championship rematch against the Kamloops Storm on Saturday, Sept. 19, featuring as a highlight on the trip.

The road trip will also see the Dynamiters visit the 100 Mile House Wranglers (Sept. 18), Sicamous Eagles (Sept. 20), Chase Heat (Sept. 25), Revelstoke Grizzlies (Sept. 26) and Golden Rockets (Sept. 27). After only playing one home game at the Kimberley Civic Centre in the month of September, the Dynamiters kick off a season high five-game homestand on Oct. 2 when the Revelstoke Grizzlies visit town. When the KIJHL schedule was being

built, effort was put in to reducing the number of times teams were faced with playing three games in three nights. This season, the Dynamiters will play three games in three nights on three occasions: Sept. 18-20, Sept. 25-27 and Nov. 13-15. During the 2014-15 season, the Nitros played three games in three nights on four separate occasions. In other highlights, the Storm will return to the Civic Centre Friday, Nov. 13, for the first time since the KIJHL championship series. That same weekend will see the Nitros travel to Canal Flats for a Sunday afternoon matinee (Nov. 15) against the Columbia Valley Rockies. The annual Fernie-Kimberley holiday showdown is once again on the schedule, with the Ghostriders visiting the Civic Centre Monday, Dec. 28. The Nitros make the trip to Fernie the following night. In total, the Nitros

TORONTO - When the Toronto Blue Jays could put ace Roy Halladay on the mound every fifth day, Alex Anthopoulos recalled then-general manager J.P. Ricciardi saying that alone made them a great team. Already believing these Blue Jays are a good team, Anthopoulos on Thursday filled their biggest need by trading for star left-handed pitcher David Price. Left-handed pitching prospects Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd and Jairo Labourt went to the Detroit Tigers. It didn’t matter the price was three prospects, including the top one in the organization, or that Price is an impending free agent. Anthopoulos believes he is the No. 1 starter Toronto hasn’t had since Halladay. “Getting guys like Price, that type of impact, those (No.) 1 starters, they can make you a great team all by themselves,” Anthopoulos said. “It’s more a reflection on the belief of the guys we have right now, what we have on the roster. We think we’re a good team, and adding a guy like Price we think makes us that much stronger and will give us a chance to win.” With the Blue Jays two games back of the Minnesota Twins for the second American League wildcard, they may suddenly be favourites to make the playoffs with Price. He is an all-star who won the AL Cy Young Award in 2012 with the Tampa Bay Rays. The 29-year-old is 9-4 this season with a 2.53 earned-run average. In his major-league career, Price is 95-55 with a 3.13 ERA and 1,285 strikeouts in 1,367 1/3 innings, including a 7-0 record at Rogers Centre. For the next two months Price headlines a rotation that includes R.A. Dickey, Drew Hutchison, Mark Buehrle and Marco Estrada. He’s on rotation to start as soon as Sunday against the Kansas City Royals but could also pitch Monday against the Twins.

du Toit stumbles during third round at Pacific Coast Amateur Championship Kimberley native falls out of top 10 at Eugene Country Club in Oregon

Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The third round of action at the 49th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship wasn’t exactly what Jared du Toit needed to stay in the hunt at Eugene Country Club in Oregon. But it didn’t push him out of the race either. The Kimberley native fired a two-over 72 to sit in three-over after three rounds and in a tie for 12th place heading into the fourth and final round, which is scheduled for Friday, July 31. Bryson DeChambeau (Clovis, Calif.) and Will Zalatoris (Plano, Texas) are tied atop the leaderboard at four-under par heading into the final round. du Toit came into Thursday action at oneover par and in a tie for seventh place after registering an opening-round 68 before following it up with a second-round 73 on Wednesday. Eugene Country

Club features 6,975 yards of track for competitors to conquer. du Toit is one of six Canadians at the invitational amateur event. Kevin Carrigan (Victoria) is at 11-over par, Brandon Markiw (Edmonton) is 12-over, Tyler Saunders (Sturgeon County, Alta.) is 14-over, Brett Hogan (Calgary) XXX and Jordan Lu (Vancouver) rounded out the Canadian crew at 16-over. The summer of 2015 has been a big one for Canada’s second-ranked men’s amateur golfer. A win at the 113th B.C. Amateur Championship on July 19 provided du Toit with entry into the 2015 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship set for Aug. 10 to 13 in Toronto. Prior to his win at the B.C. Amateur, du Toit also announced he was transferring from the University of Idaho to Arizona State University ahead of the 2015-16 NCAA golf season.

The Kimberlay native and former Selkirk Secondary School student had spent his first two years with the Idaho Vandals golf program, but now moves on to join Tim Mickelson, the brother of PGA Tour pro Phil Mickelson, with the ASU Sun Devils golf program. Heading into the first round, the field for the 49th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship stood at 84 players, comprised of individuals invited by the Pacific Coast Golf Association (PCGA) president, recruiting committee and individuals representing PCGA member associations. As of third-round play, only 82 players remained. Though the event and its present history began in 1967, the inaugural Pacific Coast Amateur Championship was hosted at the San Francisco Golf Club at The Presidio from April 24 to 27, 1901. The tournament

Price fills Blue Jays’ biggest need Continued from Page 8

This trade came in the same week as the Blue Jays traded for shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and reliever LaTroy Hawkins. While Tulowitzki is signed to a longterm deal, Price is a rental player who will command a hefty salary this off-season. Price, who was traded from the Rays to the Tigers at the deadline in 2014, is making US$19.75 million in the final year of his contract. Anthopoulos said was not yet dwelling on the possibility of re-signing Price, which could be difficult. “I think every team in baseball would love to have this guy on their team long term,” he said. “We’ve just got to get in the line.” At face value, trading the organization’s top prospect in Norris and two others makes it look like the Blue Jays are gunning to make this year the end of their playoff drought, which is the longest in North American pro sports. “If anyone wants to know what it looks like

to be all in, check out the Jays,” Rays pitcher Chris Archer tweeted. Anthopoulos, whose contract is up at the end of the season, bristled at the idea of being “all-in” because the club traded top prospects for a rental player in Price. “I really dislike the term,” he said. “I totally don’t agree with it. I don’t believe you ever operate that way. We’re always focused on the short- and long-term.” Short term, Price gives the Jays the spark they were lacking at last year’s trade deadline. Slugger Jose Bautista lamented a lack of moves at the time, and Toronto missed the playoffs. Now that the Blue Jays have gotten Tulowitzki, Hawkins and Price, Bautista’s reaction was much different. “I did get a text from Jose Bautista with just, ‘Is it true?”’ Anthopoulos said. “I said yes, and he just wrote yes with about a million exclamation marks.” That could almost sum up Anthopoulos’s

reaction, too, when Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told him late Wednesday afternoon that he was ready to trade Price. Negotiations took only a few hours because the Blue Jays had the guy they wanted. “He almost was not available this trade deadline,” Anthopoulos said. “These type of players, the great superstar players, rarely become available. We had an opportunity to do it.” After strengthening the best offence in MLB by adding Tulowitzki, getting Price helps a team that has struggled with pitching. Another move or two could be coming, but this fills the Blue Jays’ biggest need. “I think we all feel like we’re better than what we’ve shown so far. And this is a move that makes the club stronger,” Anthopoulos said. “I think everyone’s got an opportunity to get hot, and that’s what we’re going to need. At this point, we’re trying to give ourselves the best opportunity to get in the playoffs.”

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Our daughter recently became engaged and we couldn’t be happier. She is our only child and is marrying a great guy. While we are excited about all of the planning for the big event, it appears that the groom’s mother, “Dolores,” is trying to take control. For nearly every detail that my daughter and I agree upon, Dolores steps in and wants to make changes. While I appreciate her enthusiasm, is this the way that things are supposed to be? She is putting my daughter in the middle and making the situation terribly uncomfortable, especially since the groom is in the military and the wedding won’t take place for another 18 months. I’m not sure how long this can go on before we have words. My husband and I have given the bridal couple what we considered to be a generous budget, but Dolores keeps offering to pay for any additional expenses so she can make it be the day she wants. While we can afford to give our daughter more money for the wedding, we would like them to spend wisely for this one-day celebration. Dolores has already married off a daughter. I’m only going to be the mother of the bride once in my life. Is it too much to ask that this day belong to me? How do I keep peace with my daughter and make this the day that we have dreamed of without constant conflict with her mother-in-law? -- Once in My Life Dear Once: These days, the bride’s family doesn’t get to control every aspect of the wedding. Grooms also get a say. And many families split the costs right down the middle, giving each an equal voice in the planning. This day does not belong to you. Your daughter is the one who decides how to handle her future mother-in-law and what compromises she is willing to make. For your sake, as well as hers, please take one step back and be as gracious and accommodating as possible. It’s a good lesson to teach your daughter. It may not be the wedding you dreamed of, but it could ease the way for your daughter to have the marriage she wants and a better relationship with her in-laws. Isn’t that what counts? Dear Annie: Recently a reader complained that you never write about the good stories. Here’s one I hope you will share. I want to publicly thank my husband’s ex-wife for being a dear and special person. For the first 10 years of my marriage, I experienced the animosity that many ex-wives inflict on the new wife (and vice versa). Then I extended an olive branch, and we both put away our resentful and angry feelings and found out we had a lot in common, in addition to the man we both had married. We “grew up,” and our relationship flourished over the next 15 years as we shared birthdays, graduations, marriage, a grandchild, holidays at each other’s homes, even family vacations. We recognized that jealousy and hate only destroy one’s self, and that harmony brings peace and contentment to the soul. It’s a wonderful feeling to have such a treasured friend. -- Truly Grateful Friend Dear Grateful: We love this. Please make a copy to show your husband’s exwife. It will make her day. Funding secured for completion of St. Eugene Mission Church restoration The St. Eugene Mission Church is a step closer to its former glory after receiving necessary funding to complete a much-anticipated restoration project. Western Economic Diversification Canada today announced a $75,000 contribution to the restoration of the church, which has been a pillar of the ?aq’am (St. Mary’s Band) community since its

construction in 1897. While significant work to replace the foundation of the building was completed in 2011, safety and conservation concerns have forced the church to remain closed for more than a decade. “The Community of ?aq’am has taken great care over the years maintaining the iconic St. Eugene Church; this heritage building is a testament of the pride we take in our history,” explained Nasukin (Chief ) Jim Whitehead. “I am eager for ?aq’amnik

to see the St. Eugene Church restoration take place.” The funding will be used for various repairs to the building, including the replacement of siding, re-stabilization of the chimney and repairs to the roof, in addition to several upgrades to exterior structures and landscaping. The final stage will see the interior statues of the church repainted and restored to represent their original beauty. Many other individuals and organizations join West-
