On the waterfront Beautiful clear skies and tranquil waters make Sidney a favourite spot for boaters.

Fishing closures announced for Vancouver Island Closures effective Aug. 4

The Government of B.C. is suspending angling for the remainder of the streams on Vancouver Island due to ongoing warm water temperatures and low flows. Effective Aug. 4 through Sept.

30, 2015, all angling in streams and rivers in Wildlife Management Units 1-7 through 1-13 is suspended. The closure has been put in place to protect fish stocks at a time when they are vulnerable due to low flows and high water temperatures. Combined with the order that came into effect July 4, 2015, for South Vancouver Island,

virtually all fishing in Vancouver Island streams is now prohibited. The Campbell, Qualicum (known as “Big Qualicum”) and Quinsam rivers are now the only rivers or streams on Vancouver Island exempt from the closure. On these three rivers fishing can continue as normal. These rivers have sufficient water refuges to

adequately protect fish, even with normal angling pressure. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has also closed fishing on Vancouver Island and the two closures will support one another. B.C. government fisheries biologists are monitoring approximately 40 other key angling streams throughout the

province, and if conditions warrant, additional closures are possible. Angling closures are enabled through the British Columbia Sport Fishing Regulations of the federal Fisheries Act. Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans

It took more than a half year of training, a specially built bicycle and the will to travel over 1,957 kilometres by bicycle from Sidney to Los Angeles. Walter and Carina Overesch, along with 11-month old daughter Maria, were in Sidney ready to start their cycling trek to the City of Angels. The Overesch family comes from Karlsruhe in Germany and plan to spend the next 10 weeks on the roads. Their bicycle is one-piece with a seat in front for Carina, a regular bicycle seat mid-bike for Michael and a trailer for Maria. Carina pedals in a recumbent style at the front. Their training involved practice for Maria as well as themselves. They needed to know how she would react to spending so much time in the trailer. Apparently she is perfectly happy there. The family is planning on camping in state parks along the way.

a negotiated settlement the province achieved rather than legislating teachers back to work, as had been the pattern in several previous teacher strikes. The removal of TransLink from Transportation Minister Todd Stone’s portfolio comes in the wake of the defeat by Metro Vancouver voters of a plebiscite on the creation of a 0.5 per cent regional sales tax to fund transit expansion. Fassbender, a Surrey MLA, has extensive history on the TransLink file as a former Langley City Mayor who once chaired the Metro mayors’ council as it tried to persuade the province to grant a new revenue source. Stone as minister made statements supportive of the mayors’ plan and the new tax but did not actively campaign for it during

Fassbender, along with fellow Surrey MLA Marvin Hunt, was more blunt, at one point speaking out against No campaign critics of TransLink’s record. “Is it totally mismanaged? I don’t believe that, I never have,” Fassbender told Black Press in March, pointing to audits in recent years. “The previous commissioner looked at it and said it was a well-run organization.” Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore welcomed Fassbender’s new role. “I think it’s a good move,” the Port Coquitlam mayor said. “He has a deep understanding of the legislation and not only the

OUR VIEW

Changes are inevitable With all of the controversy regarding the building of a shopping mall on the airport lands some issues are being forgotten. Of course, there are those people in Sidney who don’t want anything to change - they like it just the way it is. And understandably it is pretty fine as it is - a small town feel with locals running the small businesses. No one wants to lose what they have. What happens all too often when large commercial malls appear, is that the core of a town dries up. Shoppers always want a better deal and sometimes malls provide them - sometimes not. One large commercial business replaces other smaller ones. That’s a fact. But, what isn’t being talked about, at least for those naysayers is the fact that there are landlords who own property in Sidney who are charging outrageous rents. Looking around there are many vacant business premises. How can anyone possibly make a go of it when most of their profit goes just to the rent? Landlords with vacant commercial space would be far better off if they lowered the rent and had a steady income rather than having a storefront sit vacant for months - if not years. That is a big problem and it isn’t unique to Sidney, it is an issue in many small towns. What needs to happen is for the businesses in the centre of Sidney to maintain their uniqueness, offer up items and goods that are not found in strip malls and provide the best possible service with a genuine smile. People will come and shop because they love to wander around Sidney. It’s a great little city and it can remain that way. While we may have to make way for change, we can control that change. No one has to shop across the highway, no one needs to go there if they prefer to shop the way they do now. And it is crucial to continue to support the businesses in Sidney and area. A new shopping mall provides other opportunities (like jobs) but just because it’s there it doesn’t mean you have to go there. Sidney will retain it’s uniqueness but it is up to the residents to ensure they support local business. What do you think? Pickleball courts would be well-used Re: letter from Jim Geiwitz in the July 29 Peninsula News Review. I would like to provide some context and clarity to the letter from Jim Geiwitz. His letter is misleading by comparing tennis courts in Sidney vs pickleball courts on the entire Saanich Peninsula. There are in fact six pickleball courts available in Sidney. Two in the ancient gym at Greenglade where the floor is cracked and lifting and lines are put down with duct tape. They are available for two hours on Monday and Friday mornings. Four great courts at Mary Winspear Centre that can be used on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings on a trial basis until August 26. On the rest of the Peninsula: • our tennis courts at Parklands school that we painted ourselves. They are in such rough shape they are actually dangerous. The asphalt is cracked with grass growing through. Being a school property, we have been asked not to play there during school hours. • six badminton courts available for two hours a week, on Thursday evenings, at North Saanich middle school. They are so confined one can’t serve without hitting the wall. • one multi-sport court (shared with basketball and ball hockey) in Centennial Park in Central Saanich. It has no fence and no net. • three courts in Brentwood Community Hall, that are only available by renting the entire hall, which has limited availability. Mr. Geiwitz states, “two more are

promised by council.” My understanding is Sidney council is planning one more. A multi-sport court to be shared by ball hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and pickleball, with removable nets and posts. In the same area there are 15 publicly-funded, quality tennis courts widely available to tennis players only. Four in Central Saanich, six at Panorama, three in Sidney, two in North Saanich and the same four at Parklands school that are “good

enough” for pickleball. That is 19 in total. Many of which stand empty most of the time. If tennis players don’t want to “share” the publicly-funded, quality, widely accessible facilities, just give us one in four, we can make four pickleball courts out of one tennis court… and many, many more taxpayers can enjoy that facility. There are over 200 pickleball players on the Saanich Peninsula who are only asking for the same access to quality facilities as tennis players enjoy. Brenda Hardy North Saanich

Climate models flawed In response to the most recent Peninsula News Review’s (July, 29, 2015) editorial: “Past Climate for the Future”, I wish to emphasize, that though climate changes such as the present warming are also suggested by the Climate models, these simulations remain deeply flawed. There are as a result of the many model weaknesses, many more scientists that are becoming opposed to the still predominate view, that our recent climate warming has been primarily caused by the increasing amounts of greenhouse gases, as produced mostly by human endeavours. I concur with what I believe Dr. Kendrick Brown is alluding to when Cont’d on page A7

I believe that Dr. Kendrick Brown is drawing upon his knowledge of warmer intervals being a part of natural variability as shown by warm climate excursions approximately 9,000, 6,000, and about 1,000 years ago, a time known as the Medieval Warm Period. These warm periods, and also cold intervals are to be expected in future as our climate varies, nat-

you don’t have to be a wild-eyed environmentalist to recognize that posed price of $2.25 per million litres to companies like Nestle for an increasingly threatened resource like groundwater, makes no sense. The straw man that Fletcher and the Minister of Environment, Mary Polak construct – we can’t set a higher price because it would ‘allow the US to press for equal access to Canadian water’ – blows away with even a slight breeze of scrutiny. Provinces like Nova Scotia are charging up to $179 per (million) litre(s) without triggering any traderelated action. Legal experts like Deborah Curran, Hakai Professor of Environmental Law at the University of Victoria, and Andrew Gage of West Coast Environmental Law, agree. good for the community. Suggesting the elderly having to drive to Victoria is an issue. It’s not, the communities are served by the small businesses in Sidney, Brentwood, and Central Saanich. These stores have all the same goods for 5 to 15 per cent more money, yes more money. A small business can’t compete with Walmart’s buying power. But consumerists say going to a big box store (at the end of the year), really does not save you any money, and costs your community a ton in lost revenues and trickledowns. I find it to be an effective way for clients to get started back into exercise after an injury or getting their bodies back into an exercise program. It is also a great way to maintain core spinal health.” – Dr. Christina Clapham-Updegrove, Alignment for Life

Are you looking for an effective strength training program?

Vibes Fitness Sidney specializes in 15 minute, individualized, low impact workouts for people of any age, or fitness level. By combining the advanced technology of Whole Body Vibration, with a Vibes custom program, our members receive a tailored and effective workout with the additional health benefits for conditions such a osteoporosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis. Members will also see improvement in balance, circulation, core strength and bone density.

Vibration exercise as performed at Vibes will increase muscle recruitment by up to 60%, while having a positive effect on bone density. The gentle, rapid muscular contractions created by the vibration, will lead to increased strength and favorable stresses being placed on the bone. The technology used at Vibes allows the muscle to work as a pump, resulting in increased blood flow within the circulatory system allowing the body to carry off waste products much faster, thereby enhancing circulation and recovery from exercise and creating lymphatic drainage.

Mayors saw Clark’s promise of a referendum as a betrayal of that deal. NDP transportation critic Claire Trevena called the shift in TransLink responsibility a “slapdown” for Stone “because he hasn’t delivered.” Bernier, a former Dawson Creek mayor with 20 years experience in the natural gas industry, is a first-term MLA for Peace River South. Clark also shifted Naomi Yamamoto out of the small business ministry, making her Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness, underneath the transportation ministry. Jordan Sturdy is now parliamentary secretary for energy literacy and the environment under Environment Minister Mary Polak – Bernier’s previous post. He’ll also chair the province’s Climate Leadership Panel. “We have the opportunity now to build on a record of student achievement with long-term labour peace in place, to strengthen our support for small business, which is the backbone of our economy, to work together with communities to prepare for the future, and to put in place a plan to prevent and manage emergencies or natural disasters so that our province can recover with our future secured,” Clark said in a news release.

Illness from tainted oysters soars with heat Risk grows with rise in water temperatures Jeff Nagel Black Press

A surge in shellfishrelated illness because of the hot summer weather has prompted the B.C. Centre for Disease Control to issue a warning to oyster lovers. The centre says 35 cases of a bacterial infection called Vibrio parahaemolyticus have been reported in June and July – an unprecedented number. Most people got sick from eating raw B.C. oysters served in restaurants, although some cases involved oysters that were selfharvested or bought at retail outlets. The bacteria occurs naturally in shellfish like oysters, clams, mussels, scallops and cockles and their concentrations rise in the summer months when water temperatures get warmer. “The risk is espe-

The show will be the seventh annual originating in Tulista Park but the third annual held at Mary Winspear. Executive Director of the centre, Brad Edgett who has spent 10 years curating the First Nations gallery in Victoria said that with this background, it was important to give people the opportunity to come out and show their work. The show, which runs from Aug. 7 to Sept. 3, seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. sees between 8,000 and 9,000 visitors who stop by throughout the month. The opening ceremonies will commence on Aug. 7 at 5 p.m. in the theatre with acts that are part of First Nation’s traditions. “Tradition plays a huge role in the opening of an event like this and being that we’re on traditional Coast Salish territory, it’s very important to follow protocol, protocol is a huge thing in the First Nations community,” he said. There will also be a sale of art with a wide range of prices for the public to look at and possibly purchase, with the majority of the proceeds going to the individual artists. The other 15 per cent of the purchase price is going back to the collective to help put on the show next year. Edgett says it’s a chance to purchase work from across the country that is authentic, original and indigenous. “You’re not going to see this kind of eclectic mix anywhere else.”

Natural gas rates: you have a choice Starting November 1, 2015, you’ll have a choice when it comes to buying natural gas. A program called Customer Choice lets you buy gas from an independent gas marketer at fixed rates and terms, or from FortisBC at a variable rate. Independent gas marketers may knock on your door to discuss these options. Either way, FortisBC would still deliver your gas. To learn more about your options, visit fortisbc.com/yourchoice.

Getting over 1.1 million votes, Fletcher says this has been a pretty big deal. “It comes with an immense amount of pride for myself as the person that started this, but so many people helped to get us where we are. I have a lot of pride and I’m happy to speak as often as I can about the win that we had here.”
