familiar rumble and roar will greet Alberni Valley residents when Thunder in the Valley hits the throttle this weekend at the Alberni Valley Regional Airport. “We have 16 door slammer cars coming,” said Alberni Valley Drag Race Association president Bill Surry. “Those are our high powered cars and we’ll have a pretty good field.” That’s not the only class Surry is excited for. “Everything’s going real well. We had a couple of test and tunes and laid down some rubber. “We have a nitrodragster coming and a couple other dragsters.” While rumours about whether this year’s race would happen or not slowed down early registration, Surry said it’s almost back to normal. “We’re at about 225-230 right at the moment and we usually run between 240-260,” said Surry. “So it’s down a little bit but we might get them before we’re finished. There was a lot of apprehension.” The details of how the event will run in future years is still up in the air— negotiations for a new location haven’t amounted to anything, Surry said. “It went nowhere,” said Surry. “Until they give us a spot and say ‘this is yours now,’ we can’t do much so at this point in time we’re still operating from the

airport.” Surry said that the AVDRA will have to wait for the results of the alternate approval process—which finished on Aug. 5—to figure out their next steps. “We don’t know what the expansion will do to us,” he said. “We hope that there’s some way around it and that we can maybe make something a bit different at the airport and still be running.” One of the options offered up by the AlberniClayoquot Regional District is moving the race strip to the western end of the runway. “That’s the latest of the possibilities because there’s about 500 feet or more at the other end that’s all flat and

Dry weather precautions With the dry conditions and extreme heat, both Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association president Bill Surry and Sproat Lake Volunteer Fire Dept. Chief Wade Hepp are taking extra precautions: • No open fires or smoking. With the extreme fire risk, Hepp said that a fire that gets out of control will spread very, very quickly. • A minimum of four SLVFD members will be on scene at all times throughout the event, Hepp said. graveled,” said Surry. “If we pave it or put concrete into there we can run from there.” It would be the most convenient move for the drag race. “We just move our bleachers, our safety stuff and everything else to the other end,” said Surry. “That way we can still use some of the facilities at the airport even if we have to make changes.”

If the race moved to the western end of the runway, there would be no more issues with laying rubber or degrading the runway in any way. “It’s off the end of the runway at the opposite end of where the expansion’s going,” said Surry. “The only thing that will be on the runway is the shut down area... we won’t be tearing up any of

their stuff. It’ll be our own area and it won’t bother anybody.” But despite any future concerns, Surry is focused on making sure that this year’s event runs smoothly. “We’re all ready to go. We’re going to start at noon on Thursday (Aug. 6) and start setting up and be ready to go,” Surry said. With a new sticking compound being used this year, Surry said there will be a few test drives on Friday night to make sure that it’s all working the way it should. “When we’re all set up with all our timing gear in place we’re going to take a few runs on it and see what happens and how the cars react,” he said. Surry’s hoping that the preparations will draw

a crowd even before the event gets going on Saturday morning. “We’d love people to come and see what we’re doing. We turn that airport into a little city and people don’t see exactly how much work goes into getting it ready,” said Surry. Literacy helps Mulvey find his way to a better job Third in a series

SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Learning to read has led Steven Mulvey of Port Alberni on a tumultuous journey, but by no means is his story unique to adult learners. Mulvey was diagnosed with dyslexia—meaning he has difficulty reading, writing, spelling and decoding language—when he was in elementary school. Dyslexia is said to run in families, and Mulvey’s grandmother and uncle both dealt with similar learning disabilities. While he may have difficulty reading, Mulvey became an expert at memorization—which kept his teachers and his mother from discovering his learning disability. “They didn’t figure out I’m dyslexic because all my spelling tests I would memorize the night before,” he said. “I passed right underneath the radar because of my memory. “Because I couldn’t read I found ways around it so my comprehension and problem solving were as above average as my reading was below.”

He was held back in Grade 2 and Grade 6. His mother, who worked alternately as a waitress, construction flagger and at Home Hardware, helped him where she could, even acting as his scribe in History 12. “She enjoyed it because she learned history,” he said. Where Mulvey differs from some adults who are illiterate, though, is he sought a solution. He turned to Literacy Alberni at the urging of his mother, who he says is responsible for him even graduating from high school. Once he graduated, Mulvey discovered there weren’t any programs available at the time where he could continue with his learning. “When school ended there was no more help,” he said. “I wanted to work with my hands and I wanted to make a lot more money. I put them together and found a job I wanted (welding). I had to upgrade my reading for blueprints and whatnot.” At Literacy Alberni Mulvey was paired with volunteer tutor Hugh Anderson, a former Member of Parliament who also spent more than a decade with the Port

Steven Mulvey has a goal to be a ticketed welder. Going back to school with a tutor, the late Hugh Anderson, at Literacy Alberni helped him come closer to that goal.

Martin Mars keeps busy The Martin Mars water bomber had a record-setting weekend over the BC Day long weekend. The Hawaii Mars was dispatched to Wood Lake to twice help fight the Harrison Lake fire on Sunday (Aug. 2) and Monday. On Sunday, according to Coulson Flying Tankers’ Facebook page, the water bomber dropped a recordsetting 17 loads or 433,700 litres of fire retarding foam and gel in about four hours. “No snags to report on the aircraft— she’s running like a Swiss watch,”

a spokesperson quipped on social media. On Monday the Mars spent another 1.8 hours attacking the Harrison Lake fire, dropping 126,8700 litres of foam on the fire. On Tuesday the Mars was on standby for Harrison Lake, then called to help extinguish fires that ignited due to lightning in the Great Central Lake area, dropping 96,000 litres in just under two hours, according to Coulson Flying Tankers.

“I would go there once a week then go to INEO and make appointments for that day,” he said. “It helped me organize my life around the frequency of going once a week.” After Anderson’s death, Mulvey decided to take a break from his tutoring sessions at Literacy Alberni, but continues with some of the activities he learned from Anderson. Mulvey still reads the newspaper for current events, keeps up with politics “like Hugh would do” and is reading a series of 14 audiobooks by the late Robert Jordan called the Wheel of

EDITORIAL

Campaigning starts already Prospects for BC’s biggest investment The silly season has begun. Prime Minister Stephen Harper dropped the election writ on Sunday, a full 11 weeks early, which means the artificial campaign that started weeks ago with the federal Conservatives handing out money like it was going out of style will now begin in earnest for all four of the official parties— Conservative, NDP, Liberal and Green—as well as various fringe parties. In Port Alberni, it will be especially important to follow at least some of the campaign as we are now in a new riding called CourtenayAlberni. We are no longer sharing an MP with Nanaimo, but with part of the Comox Valley. Although no candidates had officially confirmed they are running for office in this new riding before the News went to press (nominations don’t close until Sept. 28, about three weeks before the Oct. 19 election), there are five who have made their intentions known: Conservative John Duncan, Green Glenn Solitt, Liberal Carrie Powell-Davidson, Libertarian Troy Degerness and NDP Gord Johns. We are not looking forward to 11 weeks of rhetoric, nor do we agree with the millions of dollars in election spending we can look forward to the main political parties spending. We are hoping the issues aren’t buried by extended election campaigns. We’d like to hear from our readers what you think the issues are, and we will do our best to find the answers among the campaigning. — Alberni Valley News

TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views

V

ICTORIA – Now that the political back-and-forth is over, there are two questions left about the Petronas-led proposal to make the biggest privatesector investment in B.C. history. Will it actually happen? And is it a good deal or a bad one? Premier Christy Clark ducked the first question on the day the project agreement for Pacific Northwest LNG was approved by the B.C. legislature. “After many predictions about the Canucks and the Alberta election, I don’t make predictions any more,” Clark said. “But I can say that this project has gone farther than any of our critics said that it would.” For what it’s worth, my prediction is on record: it will go ahead. The latest evidence is the company’s

continued, costly effort to gain federal and local approval for a suspension bridge to Lelu Island to minimize the marine impact. Lax Kw’alaams Band members could not have had details on that change from an underwater pipeline when they voted to oppose the project in May. Is it a good deal? The mayors of Prince Rupert and Port Edward have made their views clear – they see it as a lifeline for an area that has struggled for years with a faded forest and fishing industry. The B.C. NDP is also now clear, having voted against the project agreement in the brief summer session of the legislature that concluded last week. Whether the project proceeds or not, this will be a key election issue in 2017. NDP leader John Horgan and other MLAs made much of the lack of job

guarantees, pointing to similar projects in Australia. Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman issued a statement with excerpts from the state of Western Australia’s agreement for the Gorgon LNG project. The so-called guarantees contain qualifiers like this: “... except in those cases where … it is not reasonable or economically practical to do so, use labour available within Western Australia.” Obviously there were no job guarantees, which could only exist in a command economy, in other words a communist dictatorship. Everyone agrees that specialized trades such as welding alloys for lowtemperature operation will be brought in. And LNG processing trains will be shipped in prefabricated from places

like South Korea, as they have been in Australia and elsewhere. Pacific Northwest LNG is on record with federal regulators that in the latter stages of construction, the use of foreign labour for the project could reach 70 per cent. Does that make it a bad deal? Perhaps B.C. could attempt to develop this expertise from the ground up. It seems to me that was tried with aluminum ship fabrication, and it didn’t work out too well. For David Keane, president of the B.C. LNG Alliance, the question is how many large LNG projects, pipelines and all, can be managed at the same time as the Site C dam is being built. It was skilled labour shortages, and particularly a shortage of supervisors, that caused Australia to lose some of its proposed projects. Keane said all LNG proponents here want to use as much local labour as they can, because it’s less expensive and it builds local support.

I see that the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) directors in their infinite wisdom have closed the parks and trails under their jurisdiction. They are apparently very worried about the extreme fire danger. Bravo, directors. I wonder why it is

And he disagrees that B.C. is a sweet deal for the industry. Among other things, pipelines have to be built across two mountain ranges. Not only that, B.C. producers would pay an LNG income tax, which is a first in the history of the industry. Add to that PST,

GST, payroll taxes, municipal taxes and federal and provincial corporate income taxes. Add aboriginal revenue sharing, and we have a deal. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Twitter: @tomfletcherbc E-mail: tfletcher@blackpress.ca

The Alberni Valley News will not be publishing letters to the editor that we receive from candidates during the 2015 federal election. We feel the letters section is not the appropriate platform for electioneering. We do, however, welcome commentary from independent writers. that they are worried about a few hikers starting a fire on a trail somewhere in the bush, but have

absolutely no regard for taxpayers’ lives or property near the planned music festival in a rural residential

neighborhood? It seems to me gathering 500-700 people who are consuming alcohol and smoking in a hay field surrounded by trees, for three days, may be a more of a danger than hikers out for a walk and exercise. Are the 86 neighbors in the immediate area who signed letters of opposition to the event, and I, the only ones who see the

hypocrisy and irony in this decision? I hope the directors are proud of their decision to save the public. All ACRD taxpayers will be on the hook for all damages caused by this party including fire costs. The neighbors are hoping no lives are lost, as it is almost a given houses and property will be. Guest shot

The guest opinion by Jim MacGregor (Let nature take its own course, Guest Shot, June 18) is a excellent example of how incorrect ideas can be held by many intelligent people. The final couple of paragraphs clearly show the authors’s distorted moral view of nature and development. Some people conclude there is a point in recent human history where development or

modification of nature should end. Others erroneously think that the world as it was when they were born is natural. The most serious moral position though, is the, “freeze further change” ideal. I don’t view human inventiveness as destructive. We humans embarked on the “improve nature” path when the first human chipped a sharper edge on a stone, effectively creating a more useful tool. A few of his fellow travelers on the earth saw what he had done, considered it beneficial to their own lives, copied it and some thousands

of years later, here we are, living in a modern industrial society. Probably some folks would have liked to complain about changing nature then, but sadly they had to wait until other geniuses invented the language we finally learned to speak. To consider change in the proper perspective, today’s peaches, pears, cherries, apples a far cry from what was found in nature. And yes, today there is no excuse for sloppy thinking about “natural” origins of fruit, of pets, of livestock as the Internet has those

answers. Wheat, rice and corn are all descended from grasses. Through selective breeding, those greatly modified grasses today feed some seven billion people. And consider your friend, the dog. Selective breeding gives us hundreds of variations showing little resemblance to their distant ancestor, the wolf. We need to keep in mind how this happened. The modifications of nature that surround us are there because a significant number of our ancestors viewed those changes

positively and adopted them for the purpose of improving their own lives. The things we like, we keep. As a warning to us all, the “we should resist change” attitude carries a dangerous component. “Should” is a moral word and that statement is far too close to, “you may not change” for my liking. Mr. MacGregor, like so many others, is careless with his words and that gives us a window into his mind. As George Orwell said, “But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.”

You should eat your vegetables! What is your emotional reaction to this declaration? Do you think I am helpful, or am I judging you for not eating your vegetables? Many churches have numerous rules to be follow. Eat fish on Friday, don’t consume alcohol, etc. These rules have cultural origins, to preserve the health and cohesion or the congregation within the culture of the day. Our culture has been transformed by expansion of human rights of races, women, gender preferences. Many old rules are no longer relevant. Unlike culture, the Bible’s teaching is universal and unchanging. Gluttony, lust, greed, pride, despair, anger, envy, sloth leads to a life of misery. Love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control leads to a fulfilling life, applicable to all cultures. In the Bible, Romans 14:1,3 “ Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgement on disputable matters………. The man who eats everything must not look down him who does not” God’s Word is for all people, all cultures, all times.

High bacterial counts in the water have forced the closure of Canal Beach to swimming until further notice. Signs went up on the weekend advising people to stay out of the water at Canal Beach after testing was done near the pier, and bacteria levels were deemed unacceptable, according to the City of Port Alberni. “Public beaches are not technically ‘closed’ to public access,” according to VIHA’s frequently asked questions about beach testing. “A warning sign is posted advising the public that the water may be unsafe for swimming.” Advisories are automatic when water samples come back with a result of over 1000 E. Coli or 175 Enterocci per sample is received.

In the case of Canal Beach, according to the city, warmer water temperatures have killed off salmon fry and the carcasses are washing up at Canal Beach. There are also geese present and they typically leave large amounts of feces wherever they congregate. Island Health routinely tests water in public and private areas where people swim from May to September. More tests were conducted Tuesday morning at Canal Beach, Port Alberni city clerk Davina Hartwell confirmed. “Results won’t be known until the end of the week so the signage will stay in place until the results are back within the recommended guidelines and the health inspector advises the signage may be removed.” editor@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Busy weekend for fire department SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A brush fire, two car accidents and a rash of medical calls kept Port Alberni Fire Department busy over the BC Day long weekend. “I guess you could call that a fairly busy weekend,” PAFD fire Chief Tim Pley said. “Most of them were medical calls.” One of the car accidents occurred just after midnight on

Monday, Aug. 4. Crews were called to a car that had gone over a bank, into a railing and hitting a tree. However, the driver had left the scene by the time a first responder arrived, Pley said. The 20 calls over the weekend was higher than the annual average but not unusual given it was a warm, busy long weekend. “When it’s really warm like this the

between the PAFD and Cherry Creek Fire Department’s jurisdictions. Both departments responded and spent two hours knocking down a six-by-10metre brush fire. “We think it was human caused,” Pley said, but an exact cause had not been determined by the News’ press time. “We’re not sure at this point if it was accidental or on purpose.”

activity hours get extended because people are out later.” The brush fire was originally called in on McBride, but it was in the forested area behind John Howitt Elementary School— right on the border

The fire happened on city parkland “and city parks and trails are still open for use, but no smoking, no fires and no motorized vehicles,” he added. Crews had the fire under control fairly quickly “but it was a fair bit of work. “The fire was burning down and getting deep seated. It was entrenched in at least one stump. It was fairly laborious work.” editor@albernivalleynews.com

Keeping with my goal of reading light, cheerful books for summer, I picked up The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall. Though the story starts off with the minor disaster of the family dog eating the map, and the four Penderwick sisters being convinced that their father is lost, it soon settles into a gentle adventure. When their usual holiday home is unexpectedly sold, the Penderwicks are forced to find an alternative in a small cottage on the Arundel estate. There, sisters Rosalind, Skye, Jane, and Batty (plus their mapeating dog, Hound) meet many interesting new people. A villainous landowner, a charming gardener, and a young boy, who may just turn out to be a new friend. Between a treasure-filled attic, rabbits, and the best gingerbread on the east coast, the Penderwicks are in for quite an adventure! I loved the gentle nature of the story – there’s no rushing off to save the world nor are there life and death battles. A change for me! There is something for everyone in this story, whether it’s Jane, the aspiring writer, Mr. Penderwick, the Latin spouting botanist, or Jeffery the musical prodigy. A rollicking tale of four sisters and their dog on holiday, The Penderwicks is a light hearted adventure perfect for anyone in search of simpler times. Give it a try; you won’t regret it! Test pilot school a success for Mars COULSON: | ITPS hopes to return in 2016 for training. KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Fighting fires wasn’t the only reason the Hawaii Mars water bomber was airborne in July after almost two years of rest. Pilots from the International Test Pilot School spent 22 hours flying the Mars around the Valley. “They were doing an evaluation of the Martin Mars against civil certification regulations,” said Giorgio Clementi, owner of the ITPS. “They were practicing regulation flight tests on a large sea plane.” The training crew was made up of Chinese pilots from various parts of the Chinese government and included both

pilots and engineers. “We’re training a team of test pilots and engineers that are going to be testing the new AG-600 which is a new Chinese seaplane.” The Mars, Clementi said, was the perfect plane for the job. “It’s the biggest seaplane in the world.” Flying the Mars was the final stage of the 14-week ITPS course, the earlier parts of which were completed in London, Ont. “We taught them how to test sea planes and then we gave them the (Hawaii) Mars as a project where they could apply their newfound skills,” said Clementi. Each pilot received five hours on the Martin Mars water bomber, 1/10th of their total program flight hours. The remaining two Martin Mars flight
