UK-based Chris Bettles and Zoe Moyden visited Maple Ridge recently,as part of a documentary the pair are creating on the global Transition Initiative movement. the global name may be Transition Initiative, “what’s fascinating is that this looks different everywhere you go,” said Bettles. “You’ve got this happening in 48 countries, so obviously it’s going to look different in the Philippines, or London, or here in Maple Ridge.” With the movement marking 10 years this year, Bettles and Moyden felt it would be an interesting time to “come to North America and see how this movement is having an impact on this part of the world,” Bettles said. “We’re combining our skills and interests to share these stories.” Through this, the pair hope to “help people in the movement stay motiv-

ated, as well as try to reach out to people, that may not have heard of the movement yet, and realize these are simply ordinary people doing extraordinary things.” The documentary centre around “the stories that are coming out of each of the transition communities that we’re visiting,” said Moyden. “What we’ve found so far is that each place that we’re looking at has different needs, and has a completely different story.” She cited Surrey as an example, noting that although it’s just across the river, the stories within its transition movement are vastly different than in Maple Ridge.

Having shot local footage in town, the pair continues their journey down the Pacific Coast, with stops in Washington, Oregon, and California. All told, the trip is scheduled to take three-and-a-half months, with shotting wrapping up in mid- October, and the first episode scheduled to be released early in the new year. “What excites me most about this project is the people that we meet, and finding individuals that are really making a difference – and creating a positive change – in where they live,” Bettles said. “Everyone I’ve met so far is exceeding my expectations.”

With a month-and-a-half still to go in the hot, dry summer we’ve been experiencing, construction continues at one of the Fraser Valley’s most popular lakes. Parking near Maple Ridge’s Whonnock Lake can be at a premium some days as work proceeds to improve walking paths and drainage around the beach/swimming area of the lake and adjacent Whonnock Centre. Bruce McLeod, Maple Ridge’s manager of parks planning and development, said the original goal was to complete most of the construction work prior to the summer, “however, there have been supply and subcontractor issues, and now with the need to wait until cooler moist weather for planting we will need to delay completion until the fall.” With a price tag of $1,178,000, the project has focused on providing improved and safer walking routes for pedestrians, separating them from vehicle traffic with identified parking lots and paved and lit pathways to connect parking areas to Whonnock Centre, McLeod explained.

Starting Early

A movement that began in Ireland a decade ago, now has a global reach of 48 countries, including Canada, and more specifically, right here in Maple Ridge. And according to two filmmakers who were in town recently creating a documentary about the movement, The Transition Initiative is described as “a model, or tool, that communities can use to adapt to more sustainable ways of living, and keep the focus on improving the strength of the community, as well as the resilience of the community.” That explanation comes from Chris Bettles, a Bristol, UK-based 25-year-old old, who works in the public relations industry. Bettles was recently in town with his filmmaking partner Zoe Moyden, also 25, filming what will be part of a documentary web series on the global movement, with a special focus on the local arm of the movement. Construction vehicles and roped off areas have lined the paths at Whonnock Lake Park this summer, part of a massive upgrade to the drainage and parking in the area. Within a year, the City plans to not only have the lake park back to full-function, but also “blooming” with art. The planned installation – titled BLOOM – was inspired by the natural flora surrounding Whonnock Lake, and will feature a number of coloured canopies “blooming” from the trees near the lake, said Susan Hayes, public art steering committee chair. An unusual election call

his will be one for the history books, one way or another. It begins with parts of the country baking under mid-summer heat, and by the time we actually go to the polling stations on Oct. 19, it will have snowed in Winnipeg. Probably two or three times. This will be the longest election in modern Canadian history, and one of the first in which there are three major parties, each with at least a decent chance of winning and forming a government. The media, whether printed on paper or delivered via smartphone, will be full of the usual stories over the next 11 weeks. We’ll have the candidates who pop up and say stupid things to embarrass their own party. There will be gaffes and blunders, and endless debate over whether this or that gaffe will actually matter to the voters. There will definitely be black-and-white attack ads showing opposing politicians looking sinister, as if they might kick puppies on breaks from campaigning. There will be polls, polls by the truckload, for those who are entranced by every 0.3 per cent change in a party’s chances. Locally, we know that people will consider the leaders and the national policies. Everyone will also have to take into account their local candidates, which should include at least all four of the major parties and possibly an independent or two, along with some of the smaller fringe participants. It’s certainly unusual to stretch an election out over half a summer and up to Thanksgiving. But at least it does come with a few advantages, including plenty of time to make up our minds. Every election, we suggest to the voters that they do their best to stay informed, and we’ll do our best to give them the information they need to do that. We’ll all have plenty of time to do so this round. An 11-week election campaign may be too long. But at the end of it, as we pass by the faded lawn signs, we’ll have no excuse for not having enough information to make an informed decision. – TIMES

Letters Proposed tree bylaw shortsighted Dear Editor,

While there are positive aspects to the proposed tree bylaw as it applies to urban and development properties, its application to rural properties is seriously flawed. There is no obvious comprehension of the tenants of sustainable forestry, sustainable woodlots, or responsible rural culture in general. The proposed $500 permit fee and $25 a tree fee to cut any tree greater than 10 cm on properties under five acres and for properties over five acres after five trees a year are cut is patently ridiculous. A sustainable woodlot requires thinning cutting of mature trees and replanting. This results in increased biomass and bigger tree canopy,

neither of which are predicated on counting trees or centimetres. It is a garden on a 40-plus year cycle. If I pull more than five carrots out of my garden, should I be expected to get a $500 permit and pay $25 to pull the sixth carrot? This bylaw is simply an initiative to extort money from rural people who are trying to live a sustainable life and will result in criminalizing non-compliant people who are simply trying to heat with wood or clear trees from around the garden or create room for an outbuilding and a road. Even the urban culture that informed this bylaw would likely recognize a road as a

reasonable way to access a building. What is an orchardist supposed to do if he or she wants to remove unproductive trees and plant another variety? Sometimes trees simply need to be removed and others replanted. If the invention of this bylaw is actually to save trees rather than tax people, you would simply create a bylaw like Surrey’s which states that for every tree that you cut down, you must plant two. While it may not apply to urban and development properties, it is an intelligent, effective, and acceptable bylaw for rural properties and guarantees the expansion of the canopy.

Refurbishment cash good news story Dear Editor,

In regards to comments on the TIMES’ Facebook page, in reference to the federal government committing half a million dollars towards refurbishing two fields at the Albion Sports Complex, the problem is, so many don’t know what is federal, provincial, and municipal responsibilities. This is a good news story and should be celebrated, not

criticized. Money coming into our community is good. I understand political ties warrant an opposition voice, but come on, this is needed for the citizens of our community of all ages. Folks, this is a good news story and yes, we do need more. But let’s work together to make positive things happen instead of sitting back and

blaming everyone else for their lot in life. We live in one of the finest countries in the world, one of the best provinces. That doesn’t happen by accident. Celebrate, my friends and give thanks that we live in a country that contributes to it citizens because many countries simply cannot.

An open letter to the City of Maple Ridge: What the hell have you let happen to this city? Recently I was leaving a local shop and my dog was barking at some homeless person. He stood in front of the store hollering at me while I got in my car. He proceeded to spit on me through my open window and throw things at my car as I drove off. I do not need this crap, and I feel that this council, or any other, has done nothing to fix it. I work in Maple Ridge, but I will move. My sympathy just went out the window.

is closest to my house, and thus, is where I begin. Much of the trail is graded gravel, but predominantly level. How fast one completes the almost 18-km loop depends on one’s motivation, speed, and general drive. While not a record-setting-temperature day, things are warming up quickly on my mid-morning ride, and I have no particular desire to burn out or face heat exhaustion. There are a couple

spots where one must pay attention to directions and signage, but overall, the route is pretty easy to navigate. Moreover, the Blue Heron Loop is just one of the many offerings, this community provides for two-wheeled enthusiasts, and while I’m alone on this particular ride, I’m certainly not the only one on the trail. By the time I’m back at my car, I’m already thinking of where to go next. What a great place to pedal.

With more than 100 forest fires currently burning across B.C., one might think the idea of a fire ban would be a simple concept to grasp. Not so, said Spencer Boileau, a park ranger at Golden Ears provincial park, who has ejected a number of campers over the past month for violating the ban on campfires. While Boileau said that most campers are respectful of the ban, some continue to plead ignorance after breaking the rules. Two weeks ago, rangers were almost forced to call the RCMP when a camper refused to leave after violating the ban, said Boileau. If there was any question as to whether or not the Albion Fairgrounds would fly as the new location for the annual Maple Ridge Caribbean Festival, the approximately 5,000

people who checked out Saturday night’s headliner musical act helped to quell any doubt. “It was a very good move for us to move to this new location,” said Deddy Geese, the festival’s main entertainment organizer. The fairgrounds were busy throughout both days, but Geese speculated that the extreme heat on Sunday may have hampered the number

Osprey Day returns Saturday

his Saturday, Aug. 8, Osprey Village in Pitt Meadows will host its annual Osprey Day, and those helping to organize it are inviting everyone from Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, and beyond, to come check it out. “I think this our seventh year,” said Ariane Jaschke, Osprey Village Business Association president. “This year’s going to be the biggest.” In addition to a wide selection of vendors, and family-friendly entertainment, this year’s event will also feature a music festival, Jaschke elaborated. “We also have triple the amount of vendors, as well as

a community dinner, so we have a lot more elements than we’ve had before.” The desire to increase the size of the day, and grow the event’s popularity came from the fact that Osprey Village itself ERIC ZIMMER has attracted more businesses, as well as feedback from those who attended. “We had heard in the past that people wished there was more vendors, or more facepainters, etc, so we thought why not provide that this year?”

Courtney De Adder, who will play NCAA softball for SFU starting in the fall of 2016, is preparing to compete with Team BC at the Western Canada Summer Games in Alberta. The girls softball portion runs Aug. 12 to 16.

She’ll begin her university career in the fall of 2016, after completing her final year at MRSS. “Now that I’m committed to them, I can relax a bit more, actually,” said De Adder, SFU softball’s first recruit for her age group, thus far. Softball will be a launch pad to earn a degree for De Adder, who plans to major in kinesiology and minor in French with the goal of being a French gym teacher. “Go big!” laughed jokingly, about her career aspirations. She’ll be juggling studies and softball, joining a SFU squad that plays at the NCAA Div. II level more, once she begins university ball, so she’s prepared in the Great Northwest Athletics Conference to do whatever she’s told, in whatever role necessary. But it’s just one of the three sports that De Adder plays at a high level. She plays metro soccer for West Coast Auto Group FC and helped her high school team, the MRSS Ramblers, qualify for the B.C. senior girls ‘AAA’ basketball championships this past March, where they placed 10th out of 16 teams. And while she’s not giving up hoops or “the beautiful game” just yet, De Adder’s focus on softball will intensify as the 2016 university softball season draws near.

She was the youngest umpire to ever officiate at the girls national championships last summer in White Rock. She was tasked with plate umpiring the U14 Open Division final. Her personality lends itself to being a plate umpire. “I like being behind the plate better because you’re more in control, you’re kind of like, the boss,” she said. De Adder’s umpiring gig came as a result of her not wanting to do anything else for a summer job. “In Ridge where I first started I was told, ‘Oh, hey, you’re 11 years old, now you can go to be an umpire,’” De Adder said. “After a few years, I realized it was kind of fun.” De Adder – who has worked in Maple Ridge, Cloverdale, and White Rock – has now graduated to umpiring senior women’s games this year and had a bit of a run-in with an angry bench boss this past season. “I had a coach throw a bucket on the field this year,” she said. “I had a partner who is really experienced so he kind of took over a bit because I was like, ‘Oh crap!’” It was De Adder’s call on the baselines that rankled the coach. “I was right but he didn’t care,” De Adder said.

Pitt Meadows golfer Gudmund Lindbjerg won the B.C. Super Senior gold championship on home turf last Thursday, during a tournament at Swaneset Bay Resort. The local golfer has won the B.C Senior title four times in the past, and doesn’t show signs of slowing down.

The Haney Neptunes swim club are off to regionals this weekend. The tournament takes place in Abbotsford, and the competition is the qualifying tournament for provincials, which will take place in Victoria later this month, and run from Aug. 21 to 23.

Knutsen and Harrison not only attended Maple Ridge Secondary together, they raced on the local circuit at tracks in Kelowna, Mission, Bellingham, Wash., Agassiz, and Aldergrove. “He rode 125 [cc bikes], 250, and 500. When he used to go to the races, this is the bike he had, and I used to cheer him on,” Knutsen said. “Sometimes he’d take me to races, I’d put my bike on their trailer and we’d go together. They had a motorhome, so I’d come along.” This 1980 Mugen ME125 is no ordinary dirt bike. “What’s special about it is, back in 1980, these bikes were air-cooled, and this is the motor that the fastest guy on the planet back then had,” Knutsen said. The “fastest guy on the planet” Knutsen is referring to is former 125cc national champion Johnny O’Mara. The bike is equipped with a custom Mugen motor, Knutsen noted. “I don’t know how many are made but I’d say… 50,” Knutsen said. Harrison was sponsored by Burnaby Honda, and the dealership just so happened to have the motor in its possession. “Mike was one of Burnaby Honda’s stars,” Knutsen said. After an 18-year hiatus, Knutsen last raced in 2006, when he entered the Western Canadian amateur nationals in Agaziz and placed second in the 250cc junior division. The now-49-year-old Knutsen isn’t planning on racing, or even riding the rebuilt bike for that matter. “It’s too pretty,” he said.
