Danielle Corbin’s Till We Meet Again was inspired by an unexpected death. WILL JOHNSON West Kootenay Advertiser
Nelson composer Danielle Corbin has released her debut music video Till We Meet Again, and she hopes the message contained within will help those grieving the loss of a loved one. The Selkirk grad was first inspired to grapple with the topic after learning her stepson Quin’s good friend had died at the age of 13. The unexpected tragedy had a huge impact on him, as well as his younger brothers Kaegan and Isaac. “Basically this song came from talking to them and hearing the questions they had while they were dealing with the grief,” said Corbin. “I was trying to fall asleep that night and the conversations kept running through my head.” She composed the song over two years ago, initially planning for it only to be shared with family, but then they encouraged her to record the song and distribute it further. “I’ve always been an instrumentalist and composer, plus I’ve worked writing film scores, but this is my first step into the songwriting world, at least professionally,” she said. All the music featured in the song was composed by Corbin , who recorded all the instruments acoustically or with her keyboard. “Why did he have to go? I want to understand,” she sings on the track. “Why did he die so young? I can’t comprehend a reason. How would it be that someone who means so much to me is gone?” Corbin said the song takes the listener on an emotional journey from a place of pain to one of acceptance and gratitude. “In the final chorus the words change, and it becomes about being thankful even though the person’s gone. It moves into a place of healing, of being thankful for the time you had with them, and hoping to meet them again in the future in Heaven.” She said people react strongly to the message. “I apparently have made a lot of people cry since I released it, which is a good thing I hope,” she joked. Corbin is now offering multiple versions of the song, with the pronouns tweaked from one to the next. “We realized at some point it work well with memorial services, so there’s four versions of the song. I’ll also be offering personalized versions where I put someone’s name into the song as a gift.” Corbin worked with Selkirk instructor John Tucker on finishing the project. She’s working towards a fulllength album. For more information on Corbin visit her at daniellecorbin.com. Toadfest 2015: Hot summer leads to early migration This year, the annual Toadfest event will be held on Wednesday August 12th, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Summit Lake Provincial Park, south of Nakusp. The warm spring and hot summer has the annual migration of toadlets start earlier than has ever been seen before, and the toadlets are already on the move. The peak toadlet movement may have come and gone, but there will still be lots of activities to do and displays to see at Toadfest. The free event, now in its sixth year, is coordinated by the Fish and

Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP), with support from B.C. Parks, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Columbia Basin Trust, and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. “We anticipated that the migration would be earlier this year because early breeding was observed,” says Crystal Klym, Program Manager for the FWCP in the Columbia Region. “Then the very hot summer accelerated the growth of the tadpoles, and large numbers of toadlets were
already moving by the third week of July”. Western Toads are provincially Blue-listed (vulnerable) and, while numbers are still relatively strong at Summit Lake, their distribution is shrinking and the center of the world’s distribution has shifted from the USA to B.C. One of the challenges faced by the toads at Summit Lake is getting across Highway 6 without getting squashed by vehicles as they migrate between the lake and upland habitat. Adults move to and from the lake to breed in

A recently constructed toad tunnel and wildlife fencing, installed by the Ministry of Transportation, Highways and Infrastructure, and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, have already proven very successful in guiding toads and toadlets safely under the road but there are still large sections of the road where they have no protection from the traffic. “Toadfest is about more than collecting toadlets; it really is a great opportunity to learn about the local ecology and other wildlife and plants in the region,” added Klym. “There will be live aquatic

Place Names
Kootenay Bay was formerly Lynchville Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
One-hundred and sixth in a semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Kootenay Bay, the eastern terminal of the Kootenay Lake ferry (not Crawford Bay, as many people inexplicably believe) was originally known as Lynchville. According to Terry Turner and Susan Hulland in Impressions of the Past, it was named after its only resident, a Mr. Lynch “who made his living by cutting cordwood for the Kootenay Lake steamboats.” Ted Affleck in Kootenay Lake Chronicles writes that “J. Lynch … built a house on the lakeshore in the early 1900s. This part of the lakeshore, marked by a small rocky knob was renamed Kootenay Bay after Lynch departed, having lost his house and possessions in a fire.” John Lynch applied in June 1897 with W.T. McDonald and George W. Orchard for land “on the east shore of Kootenay Lake about 3½ miles north of Pilot Bay.” That summer he was also embroiled in a lawsuit against J.A. Sayward, “a claim under an agreement for fixing up the Pilot Bay sawmill,” which was settled out of court. We don’t know anything else about him. There are further references in 1901 to a John Lynch who was involved in mining around Rossland and a John Lynch who represented the Taylor air compressor com-
pany, but it’s not clear if either was the same man. Lynchville never showed up in the civic directory but was referred to by that name in the BC government sessional papers from 1906-11. The Kootenaian of May 7, 1908 reported: “The opening of a post office at Lynchville, giving direct mail connection with that section, places another lever in the hands of our merchants to corral the lake trade with …” By then, however, the name had changed. The Kootenaian of May 28 added: “Kootenay Bay, as Lynchville has now been officially christened, boasts the dignity of a post office …” But the old name hung on for a while, as demonstrated in the Nelson Daily News of Nov. 21, 1908: “A resident of Lynchville and his wife had what was to them an exciting experience one evening recently …” Kootenay Bay was first mentioned in a dispatch that appeared in many US newspapers on July 25, 1897: “This afternoon the Omaha & Grant Smetling company announces that it has completed the purchase of the Pilot Bay Smelting company’s plant at Kootenay Bay, British Columbia.” However, there are no other known examples until 1908. (The etymology of Kootenay is so complicated that we’ll leave it to the end of this series, but suffice it to say that it comes from the Blackfoot word for Ktunaxa.) In 1947, the eastern Kootenay Lake ferry terminal moved from Gray
Kootenay Bay was named in 1908 when the post office opened. Prior to that it was called Lynchville after John Lynch. Greg Nesteroff photo Creek to Kootenay Bay. The post office closed May 31, 1990 despite community protests. KRAFT This is the now-seldom-used name of the railway siding at Castlegar’s Celgar pulp mill. A clipping from an unidentified newspaper of April 22, 1959 in the Elsie Turnbull fonds at Selkirk College states: “Kraft will be the name of the new CPR station on its Kettle Valley line. It will be at the site of Celgar …” Bleached kraft pulp is Celgar’s principal product. Kraft is the German word for force. The kraft process was invented in 1879. KRESTOVA This is one of the few Doukhobor place names still in common use. It’s first mentioned in Russian in a letter held by Simon Fraser University dated Oct. 22, 1909 and entitled: “A letter from Dolina Krestova to all brothers and sisters from Peter Verigin.” The first known English transliteration is in the Trail News of Sept. 13, 1918. (doukhobor.org), the name meant “valley of the cross.” It was later known as Krestovoye and then Krestova. For a long time, it was interchangeably transliterated as Crestova. Examples of the latter spelling can be found from the 1930s through the 1960s.

Dan Haley, owner of Casa di Cioccolato in downtown Trail, used his passion for two-wheel travel to create Bike Alley behind his store on Bay Ave. in downtown Trail. Haley received so many bicycles after he started his project he turned them into planters, wall hangings and flower baskets. Some of the bicycles he received were still in great shape so he also offers up free bike loans for anyone wishing to pedal around downtown Trail.

Before the new school year revs up in about six weeks, Take a Hike is looking for new or gently used gear and outdoor clothing for Trail’s adventure-based learning program. “This is a pretty comprehensive list of things we’re always looking for,” says Jaydeen Williams, program director for the Take a Hike Youth at Risk Foundation. “Either new or used, but in good condition.” Quality rain or winter jackets, fleece and wool sweaters, snow pants, polypropylene or wool based layers and long sleeved shirts are in high need as well as
gloves, mittens, toques and wool socks. Outdoor clothing must be waterproof and in good condition, added Williams. Bigger ticket items the program seeks include high volume single kayaks, mountain bicycles and parts, cycling helmets, gloves, waterproof hiking boots and gym or water shoes. Anyone willing to purchase new or donate is asked to contact Williams at 604.710.1677 or email jaydeen@takeahikefoundation.org. Charitable tax receipts are available. At risk students living anywhere in the West Kootenay can have the chance to succeed and graduate through classroom support, physical challenges, volunteerism and one-on-one therapy with Take a Hike, which is run in the Kootenay Columbia
Learning Centre (KCLC). A good student isn’t one that only excels in the classroom but one that also excels outside of the classroom says the Foundation’s Matthew Coyne. “In our short two years, the Take a Hike program has had a meaningful impact not only on the lives of our students, but for the community as well,” Coyne explained. “Our program helps our students understand that they are part of a larger community and they have a responsibility to give back.” But alternative education comes at a cost. The Take a Hike Youth at Risk Foundation has to fundraise more than $100,000 annually to keep the local program up and running.

West Kootenay Advertiser
A local company has really taken off and is flying high after getting in on the ground floor of a burgeoning technology. Skydrone UAVS (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Services) is located at the Grand Forks Municipal Airport and is one of the leaders in drone technology in North America. Skydrone performs a number of inspection operations on hard-to-reach structures such as power lines, wind turbines, towers, bridges, substation facilities and many more in Canada, United States and Brazil. The company currently operates eight drones of varying sizes, said Ernest Ziesman, president and CEO of Skydrone. “What we want to do is take the manned variant out of it that puts human life in danger,” he said. “Anytime you’re less than 1,500 metres off the ground with an aircraft, whether it be a helicopter or fixed wing, you put yourself in a dangerous situation. You don’t have enough time to react if you have a failure. With the drone that’s no longer the case. If a drone crashes, the only one crying at the
end of the day is me as I collect the broken parts with a garbage bag.” He said he’s also excited about being able to offer courses in Grand Forks for drone piloting. “We’re the only airport right now in Canada that is certified by Transport Canada for drone flights,” he said. “We’re a certified drone testing and training facility here. We have a marked off area by Transport Canada that extends all the way to the end of the runway that we use for training.” Ziesman said they are just waiting for word from Transport Canada on licensing requirements before putting on the courses.

Salmo businesses work while visitors party Valerie Rossi West Kootenay Advertiser
Over 10,000 people are pulling into Salmo this week for one of the world’s largest electronic music festivals. Shambhala began Wednesday, with ticket holders trickling into the Salmo River Ranch. The event is all about creating a sense of community and experience like no other. This feeling is shared by Salmo businesses that brace for the busiest time of the year. “It’s a week of city life, and then it goes back to the sleepy hollow,” said Connie Stavast, manager of Salmo Pump (Esso). “It’s very strange — it’s like a light switch is turned on and off.” Stavast starts preparing for the influx of customers in March by reviewing the previous year’s orders and then determining what she’ll bring in this year. Gasoline, water, and last minute supplies are picked up before ticket holders make their way to the grounds. Business easily triples, she said, but the big hit is on “release day,” Monday when party goers exit the grounds and head straight to the gas station. It’s all staff on deck, with employees even designated for keeping the flow of the pump lineups moving. No one takes holidays this time of year, and Stavast even hires one employee just for the month to help with stock and another part timer to fill the staffing gaps. “For those 24 hours (Monday) it can be quite overwhelming for some people,” she said. “But we’ve got it down to a fine art now and that’s because it’s been so many years.”
For the first time, Salmo is formerly welcoming Shambhala with a banner through town. The village worked closely with festival organizers this year to ensure the local voice was represented at the decision table. Alana Lins photo Even still, Stavast feels anxious. She waits for the customers and only hopes she hasn’t forgotten anything. “I’ve got two orders on the books so we don’t run out of fuel and have people stranded because that has happened other years with fuel shortages,” she said. Shambhala brings many different people to the village, and the gas station is one of the stops always made. Stavast says many friendships are made with vendors, even though she only sees them once a year. Above all, she relies on the festival for economic gain. “I think it’s a good thing for Salmo,” she said. “It’s what keeps us going throughout the winter.” Brenda Kalmikoff of Shop Easy said the grocery store gets the real business at the beginning of the festival, with sales doubling for goods like water, juice, fruit and vegetables and other fresh meal ingredients. “A lot of us in town don’t look forward to it at all, it can cause problems, but we’re so used to it and we know offhand what we need
to do and we just do it,” Kalmikoff said. “They do bring a lot of money into town but once they’re up there, they usually stay up there,” she added. “When they’re getting their groceries, definitely business does pick up.” The Village of Salmo works closely with its chamber to ensure its businesses are properly represented at the discussion table. Salmo has formerly established a bond with organizers this year. “We are in fact the most affected municipality in regards to Shambhala,” said Salmo Mayor Stephen White. “(Organizers) are more than willing to work with us in terms of making sure this is a good experience for residents, it’s most certainly a great experience for our businesses.” He says the festival ultimately is a huge economic boost to the area. “We have a lot of people that come to this event and end up coming to Salmo for all kinds of reasons, positive reasons, in terms of injecting money into the community.”

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20
LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23
It almost seems as if something is working against you this week, Aries. It could just be your overactive imagination. Channel your energy into a creative project.
Libra, a little daydreaming can be good for the soul. Give daydreams their due time, but remember to refocus on real life as well. You’re up to a challenge you face this week.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 You may get swept away in some lifelike dreams this week, Taurus. It may be difficult to discern when you’re awake or asleep. Don’t get carried away.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21
SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, your schedule is about to clear up so now is a great time to take some time off. You deserve a break after buckling down for so long. Relax and enjoy yourself.
Gemini, a professional predicament may have you feeling as if you have been run ragged. Regroup, even if it means taking a few days off. This time away is just the remedy you need.
SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22
CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20
It’s nearly impossible to stick to your schedule this week, Cancer. Too many things will pop up, and you’ll be spending your time juggling multiple responsibilities.
Capricorn, continue with your consistent approach to handling your many responsibilities. You’re juggling a lot these days, and you’re benefitting from your work ethic.
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18
Leo, your imagination may push you in the wrong direction this week. Daydreaming instead of getting things done is risky. Focus on the tasks at hand.
Aquarius, adhere to your original plan this week, avoiding distraction until the tasks at hand are a distant memory. Your plan is reliable and sure to work.
VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22
PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20
Virgo, your coworkers will come through in a big way this week. Make the most of this opportunitity to work together as a team, and it will pay dividends going forward.
It’s nearly impossible to hide your emotions right now, Pisces. So why not share them and get some support from friends and family?
You know what needs to be done, Sagittarius. You may not have enough manpower to get everything accomplished, so put out a few feelers to see who is up to helping.
