The troop and horses alike from Lord Strathcona’s Musical Ride enjoyed a refreshing shower in the sprinkler after Sunday evening’s performance at Fort Steele Heritage Town. Between 500 and 600 people turned out to the event, and while it’s too early to say if the Musical Ride will be an annual event, Ft. Steele is looking at bringing in more events of that size and calibre.

About six centimeters of water is flowing over the top of the City of Kimberley dam in the Mark Creek Valley, not enough for mandatory watering restrictions to be relaxed. Although City CAO Scott Sommerville says the mandatory restrictions have had limited effect in this very low water year, water conservation remains important.

SPCA fundraiser to combat animal cruelty Paws for a Cause

Tre vor Cr awley

Though it is just under two months away, the BC SPCA East Kootenay branch is encouraging people to sign up and register for the Paws for a Cause fundraiser in September. The event, on Sunday, September 20, is

raising money to help with staffing for investigating animal cruelty claims across the East Kootenay region. There is only one animal cruelty investigation officer who covers the area from Creston to Golden to Kimberley to the Alberta border, according to Brenna Baker, the BC SPCA East Kootenay branch manager. “There are not

Drugs, including Fentanyl, seized From Page 3 “Cranbrook is not exempt from these kinds of drugs so the police continue to caution local residents of the extreme dangers associated to illicit drug use and in particular fentanyl. In the past few

months the Cranbrook/ Kimberley Crime Reduction Unit has seized several ounces of cocaine, crack cocaine, thousands of fentanyl pills and tens of thousands of dollars from suspected drug traffickers” Dubnyk added.

Water conservation remains crucial From Page 3 But there are still people not getting the message. Sommerville says the City’s bylaw officer issued three warnings to households watering out of the even/ odd days rotation. “Repeat offenders will have their water shut off with a $70 fee to have water service restored,” Sommerville said. Residents of properties with even-numbered addresses water only on even-numbered calendar days (eg. Aug. 2,4,6 etc). Residents of properties with odd-numbered addresses water only on odd-numbered calendar days (eg. Aug. 1,3,5 etc). Watering is to be done between the hours of 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. AND 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Automatic irrigation systems usually offer the option of activating the system at specified times. Optimum times are between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 4:00 am using the odd/ even system described

above. All outdoor hoses should be equipped with spring-loaded shut-off nozzles for any use by hand. Hand watering of plants using a hose with a spring-loaded shut-off nozzle or a hand-held container can be done at any time. More frequent watering of newly laid sod or newly seeded lawns is expected. Please call City Hall to advise if you plan additional watering for new lawns.

Institute brings educators to Kootenays Arne Petryshen

It’s been a busy week so far for the participants of the Canadian Wildlife Federation Summer Institute which is right now taking in the region. The nine day institute gives educators a chance to learn about the cultural and geographical aspects of a region — this time it is the East Kootenay. “The purpose here is to work with educators — educators from all over the country, and in the past we’ve had one American join us,” said Randy McLeod, Canadian Wildlife Federation education manager. “The idea is to take them through an educational and cultural and (give them) an appreciation of the area that we’re visiting.” He said since they are

in the mountain this time, they are highlight multiple things in the Rockies that are unique to the region. “So they are gaining an appreciation,” he said. “We were out at the St. Mary’s Indian Band reserve and Joe Pierre did a great chat with them and so they were totally exposed to the Ktunaxa language and culture and history out there as well.” This trip is unique because all of the educators are from the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, in Central Ontario. They are also partnered with the College of the Rockies. McLeod said on Tuesday afternoon the group was off to a culinary class. “So you can see there’s a wide variety of things we’re doing over the

course,” he said. The group ranges from a kindergarten teacher to a grade 11 science teacher. Educators apply to be part of the institute group and then there is a selection process which he said is based on simple criteria. That includes: relevance to the applicant’s program, applicant’s aims, whether the experience will be used as resources for the applicant’s classroom. “We take a look at everybody’s idea of why they want to be here and then based upon that we start our selection, but then we also want to have a selection across the board from all the divisions across the school system,” he said, adding they want educators from different levels. “I try to run between

The Canadian Wildlife Federation Summer Institute is taking place in the region over the next week. There are 13 educators from the Toronto area attending and they are all from the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, which is located in Central Ontario. On Tuesday, the group was at the College of the Rockies for a culinary class and other events.

Educators visit the Kootenays SPCA’s Pause for a Cause From page 1 “I try to run between 12 and 14 people.” This year, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board wanted all the spots. “I’ve been working with them in the past and they said this is just phenomenal experiential learning experiences you’re giving people first hand. So I ended up taking the group from there and next year I’ll be working with the other people. “In the past we’ve had university students, biologists — anyone who is an educator can apply to it, whether it’s the formal system or the informal.” Through the Canadian Wildlife Federation, McLeod organizes everything for the participants. “All they have to do is get here,” he said. “Then there is a small registration fee.” One of the participant made the trip part of her summer holiday — she drove from Ontario and is planning to fly back. Another flew down and will meet her husband and drive

back. Past tours have been Tadoussac on the east coast of Quebec, three times to Iqaluit on Baffin Island, last year they were in the rainforest in Tofino, and this year they are in the mountains of the Kootenays. “The reason I picked here is I moved to Kimberley a year and a half ago,” he said. “I’m saying ‘this is gorgeous, everyone needs to see it.’” He gets requests on places to hold the institute as well. One of the criteria for choosing a location is that there are enough activities to fill the nine or 10 day itinerary, while still staying with the theme of experiential learning. So far they’ve been to Kootenay Bay, Crawford Bay, Creston and Cranbrook. On Wednesday they were headed for Fernie and then Thursday to Kimberley for two days. Then they are headed up to the Fairmont and Radium area. “It’s a wonderful experience for teachers,” he said. “It’s not a holiday by any stretched of

coming in September From Page 3 “Anybody can come out for the day, we have music, there’s a couple local vendors here like Top Crop, The Paw Shop, and Pretty Pooch come out and set up little booths,” continued Baker. There will be a dog agility course and a a number of other activities for canines and their owners to participate in as well. “It’s just a fun day for people to

bring their dogs out and raise some money for the SPCA,” said Baker. The goal is to raise $15,000 which will stay in the area to help with staffing costs for animal cruelty calls. There will be registration on site the day of the event, but anyone interested in attending can also sign up online by visiting spca.bc.ca/walk and registering in the Cranbrook location.

70 years without a nuclear war

W

e have been hearing a lot about the 70th anniversary of the first use of a nuclear weapon on human beings, in Hiroshima on 6 August, 1945. The more important anniversary, however, is 9 August, when the last nuclear weapon was used in war, on the city of Nagasaki. It was predictable that atomic bombs would be used as soon as they were developed in 1945. It was the sixth year of the Second World War, and more than 60 million people had been killed already. But nobody would have believed then that nuclear weapons would not be used again in future wars. We cannot be sure that they never will be used in war again, of course, but seventy years is already an impressive accomplishment. How did we manage that? One way to answer that question is to consider the behaviour of US President Harry S Truman, who was the man who decided to drop the first atomic bombs in 1945 — and the first man to decide not to drop them, in 1951. Truman’s decision to drop the bombs in 1945 probably didn’t seem as momentous to him at the time as it looks now. Killing tens of thousands of civilians in cities by mass bombing (Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo) was practically routine by 1945, and the atomic bombs would have seemed like just a more efficient way of doing the same thing. Besides, the fact that Japanese cities could now be destroyed by a single plane carrying a single bomb might well shock the Japanese government into surrendering. That would spare the lives of all the American soldiers (an estimated 46,000) who would die if Japan had to be invaded. Truman had fought in the First World

War (he was the only major Allied war leader who did). Although he was not generally seen as an imaginative man, he would have been vividly aware of the ordeal that awaited American soldiers if they had to invade Japan. He would also have been conscious that the US public would never forgive him if they found out that he had the bomb but didn’t use it to save those soldiers’ lives. So he gave the orders Gwynne and the bombs fell, adding a last quarter-million lives Dyer to that 60-million death toll. But five and a half years later, when US forces in Korea were fleeing south after Chinese troops intervened in the war there (“the big bugout”), Truman behaved quite differently. It may or may not be true that US General Douglas MacArthur, who commanded the United Nations troops in Korea (including a third of a million Americans), wanted to drop atomic bombs on China’s Manchurian provinces to cut the supply lines of the Chinese troops in Korea. It is certainly true that Truman fired MacArthur, and that he did not use nuclear weapons even though thousands of American troops were being killed or captured. Truman never explained his decision, but one possible reason is that actually seeing what nuclear weapons do to human beings (which nobody had yet seen when he made his 1945 decision) may have changed his view of them. They were not just another new weapon. They were the ultimate weapon, and they must not be used. And the other reason is obvious. By late 1950, the United States had between 50 and 100 nuclear weapons — but the Soviet Union had tested its first atomic bomb in the previous year, and by then it already had at least half a dozen of the

things. The era of mutual deterrence had arrived. Truman didn’t know for certain that the Soviet Union would go to war if the US dropped nuclear weapons on China. He would have been fairly certain that the Russians didn’t yet have the ability to drop even one on the United States, although they could definitely hit America’s allies in Western Europe. But it didn’t matter: once both sides have nuclear weapons, they get a great deal more cautious. In the following decades, many military theorists have worked hard to come up with strategies that would make nuclear weapons useful in war, and many scientists and engineers have worked on new techniques and technologies that would achieve the same objective. But nobody has ever had enough confidence in their promises to use even one of these weapons in a war. The number of nuclear weapons in the world (many of them much more powerful than the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs) peaked at around 50,000 in the mid-1980s, and has since fallen to about 15,000. The US and Russia still own 93 percent of them, but seven other countries now have nukes too — and still nobody has used one in war. It is also true that no great power has fought any other great power directly for seventy years, which is certainly a first in world history. Is this because the two world wars had been so destructive that they created institutions like the UN Security Council to avoid another, or because they knew that great-power wars would probably be nuclear wars? Buckman Coe and his plucky band of instrumental whiz-kids have headlined the Starbelly Jam Festival several years running, and we can’t let our West Kootenay cousins have all the fun now, can we? Calling all East Kootenay artisans Submitted

Local artisans are invited to the 31st Annual CFUW Cranbrook Club’s Christmas Bazaar to be held at the Cranbrook Golf Course’s Clubhouse on 2nd Street South in Cranbrook. Chair of the Committee, Cathryn Henley said that 21 artists have replied to the mailings sent out in June, but only 10 have registered and paid. “Last year we ran out of space and had a wait list of 6 artisans. We do not like to turn away these crafters, so are hoping this article urges more to register or at least inquire now”, said Henley. Deadline for registering is September 15th; less than 5 weeks away! “Artists are welcome to go to our website: www.cfuw-cranbrook. com and to contact Cathryn for more information about this prestigious fair by emailing the club at cfuwcranbrookclub@yahoo.ca “, added Henley. All funds raised are put back into the community through the many works and projects of the club. We have a scholarship & bursary at the College of the Rockies as well as special bursaries for the LPN program there, and a scholarship at MBSS. We support the lunch and breakfast programs in the schools district, the Friends of Families, the Cranbrook Library, the District Science Fair and other such projects in the East Kootenay. We welcome all artists who create their own craft to join us at this annual event.

Why Iron is Important for Your Body

daily townsman / daily bulletin

Sports News? Call Taylor 250-426-5201, ext. 219 sports@dailytownsman.com

By: Dr. Chris Ford BMSc, ND

Iron is one of the most critical elements needed for your body to function properly. Most commonly known for its’ role in carrying oxygen in the blood and delivering it to the tissues in the body, iron is also necessary for many other biochemical pathways including the production of energy in every cell in the body. The mitochondria are the energy producers of the cells and generate ATP to use as energy through a process called oxidative phosphorylation or cellular respiration. Iron is required in order to complete this reaction and produce energy for the cells. Symptoms of iron deficiency commonly include fatigue, hair loss, anxiety, heart palpitations, restless legs, shortness of breath, tingling or numbness and insomnia. Lab testing for iron levels can be done in a variety of ways, but the most accurate is by testing Ferritin levels which measures the amount of iron that is stored in the body. Testing iron levels in the blood directly can give a false normal as the body is able to draw the iron from the Ferritin to make the iron levels look normal. Iron deficiency symptoms can occur as the Ferritin levels drop even though the iron levels appear to be normal. Ferritin also can give you an idea of generalized inflammation and chronic disease occurring in the body if the levels are too high. If your Ferritin levels are low it is important to supplement with a high quality iron as soon as possible as iron levels increase slowly. We prefer to use iron in the bisglycinate form as it has been found to increase iron stores quicker and maintain them for longer than other forms like ferrous sulfate. We also find that there are little to no side effects when using bisglycinate. Foods can help to maintain iron levels, but do not contain enough iron to raise Ferritin. Foods that are higher in iron content include meat, eggs, dark leafy green vegetables, molasses and beans. It is possible for iron toxicity to occur if levels are too high or you have a rare genetic condition known as Hemachromatosis. Therefore, it is extremely important to consult a health care practitioner and have your Ferritin checked prior to starting any supplementation with iron. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at any time.

Four college women’s basketball teams (from left), Ambrose, Capilano, Kings and Red Deer College, are coming to Cranbrook for an inaugural tournament to kick off basketball season.

Mt. Baker Wild to present new college basketball event Barry Coulter

The Mount Baker Senior Girls basketball team is presenting an event to kick off the autumn and the high school and college backetball seasons. The Wild Battle at the Border is an inaugural festival, based around the port of basketball, which will be held at Mount Baker Secondary School towards the end of September. Four college women’s teams have been invited from B.C.(Pac-West) and Alberta (ACAC), who will compete over the weekend of Friday, September 25, through Sunday, Sept. 27. Organizer Al Nutini says the concept for the tournament started with the idea of trying to build up basketball culture in Cranbrook —

‘Wild Battle At The Border’ features teams from PacWest and ACAC, kicking off the basketball season and to build it beyond the high school level. It is also a way to give back to the community, and to showcase smaller post-secondary schools. The teams — Ambrose College (Calgary), Red Deer College, the Kings University (Edmonton) and Capilano (Vancouver) have responded with great enthusiasm, Nutini said. As the tournament would take place just prior to the Pac-West and ACAC basketball regular seasons, it would function as a team-building exercise for the teams involved, give them the opportunity to play teams they wouldn’t normally play, and to get small town and Koote-

nay Rockies experience the participants wouldn’t normally have.

The MBSS Senior Girls Basketball team is hosting the event “It also gives them the chance to market their schools,” Nutini said. “There are a lot of great, smaller schools out there, that maybe people don’t think of when (they’re considering post-secondary op-

tions). “We really want to feed the schools, to highlight them, to make this event worth their while.” There are going to be more than 100 people coming into town, with all the positive economic impact that entails. The inaugural event features high quality women’s college basketball, but organizers aim to expand it in subsequent years to include men’s teams. Nutini stressed that this is not about fundraising for the local Mount Baker basketball squads, but the Wild are indeed hosting the event. “As a community team, we’re always

drawing from the community. We want this event to give back to the community, as well as give people another sport to watch.” Nutini has great plans to involve the community in the event as well. “We’re looking for people who may want to sing the national anthem before games,” he said. “Or perform half time entertainment. I’m willing to consider anything.” Another idea for community involvement is pairing an elementary school team with each visiting college team, have the local students wear that team’s kit, and coming to cheer their team on during each game. The Mt. Baker Senior Girls Team will be running all gym duties during the tournament. But the local involvement will also benefit the visiting teams. Nutini suggested a private movie showing at Columbia Theatres could be arranged, or even group hikes into the local backcountry — “to give them a real Kootenay experience like they can’t get anywhere else.” “It’s about building relationships with sports, that goes beyond just sports.” The event is taking shape. Nutini said St. Eugene Resort has offered great rates for the visiting teams to stay there. The six-game schedule is set, with the opening game kicking off Friday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. And the final game at 12 p.m. Sunday, Sept 27. A weekend pass for all six games will $20, a daily, two-game pass will be $10. Watch these pages for more information as the event draws near.

It happened this week in Cranbrook The Week of August 2 - 8

Dave Humphrey Items compiled from the archived newspapers held at the Cranbrook Museum and Archives

1903 Going to the dogs … Cranbrook has too many dogs of the cur breed. Give it a break …The band is not progressing very well these days. Perhaps it would be well to put away the instruments for a few months, and then reorganize. Cranbrook should have a band. Weight loss … Frank Rutley returned Saturday from Arizona, where he has been for the past eight months running an engine on the Santa Fe. He says there is good money in railroading in that country, but that the Arizona desert is enough to send a man crazy, and that he preferred to come back to the Crow. He lost 21 pounds in the eight months. Voters registered up to Monday ... Following are the number of voters registered up to last Monday in the Cranbrook riding. Cranbrook: 543, Fort Steele: 128, Moyie: 63, Marysville: 53, Wardner: 41, Yahk and Ryan: 35, Kimberley and North Star: 39, Wasa: 11. TOTAL: 903 A bargain … I will sell my house situated east of the creek for $1,000. It is two storys, has two lots, good stable, woodshed, and cellar. The house is lathed and plastered. This is a bargain for any man. H. Parker. Coal company suits … Owing to one technicality and another, the trial of the suits instituted by relatives against the Crows Nest Pass Coal company for damages for the deaths of the miners lost at the time of the explosion a year ago, has not yet taken place. The coal company, naturally, is fighting the suits at every step, but it now looks as if the test case would come to trial in October. Coming ... John R. Clarke, the inimitable boot black orator of Canada will lecture in Cranbrook on Friday, August 21st, under the auspices of the Methodist church. Mr. Clarke is called the apostle of good cheer. He preaches a gospel of sunshine, with the era of prosperity now dawning on Cranbrook. No one can afford to miss hearing

John R. Clarke. 1904 Serious fire … Last Friday morning between the hours of 2 and 3 o’clock the citizens of Cranbrook were aroused by the alarm of fire and awakened to find the three-story building opposite the station, known as the Victoria Hotel, a mass of flames. As near as can be ascertained the fire started near the sitting room, but the origin of the same is a mystery. The building was owned jointly by Messrs. F. Conruyt and F. Godderies, and a portion of the first floor was occupied by Mr. Conruyt as a clothing store while the balance of the building was utilized as a hotel and boarding house and conducted by Mrs. Conruyt. At the time of the discovery of the fire the flames had gained such headway that it was useless to attempt to save the burning structure with our limited fire apparatus, so all efforts were put forth to confine the fire and save the adjoining buildings and the balance of the town, and that these efforts were crowned with success seems little short of a miracle, and had it not been for the light rain which came at this opportune time the busi-

ness portion of Cranbrook, undoubtedly, would have now been a smoldering mass of ruins, notwithstanding the heroic work of a number of those present. And in this respect we wish to state that it was a noticeable fact that men who had not a dollar invested in the town were in the majority among the fire fighters, and too much praise cannot be given them for their work. One of these men working on the nozzle of the hose which was being used to protect the blacksmith shop and dwelling adjoining, until the back actually fell out of his coat, the heat being so intense. Activities needed … The parents of this town ought to appreciate the friendly interest that the editor takes in the young growing boys and girls, and these young folks are undoubtedly thankful for the good advice given and will be profited thereby. But gentle readers let me remark that it will take more than preaching to help these youngsters. Why not have a gymnasium, reading rooms, and play rooms under wise, kindly control. I am sure that amongst the many needs of Cranbrook, this is one that would pay a hundred fold for the money it would cost. Who will lead the way?

And, by the way gentle reader did ever it strike you that those who have no children are always the surest that their neighbor’s children are the worst lot of unregenerate humanity and are going to the everlasting bow-wows?

Gin — it’s “good for women if pure and well-matured!” Road works needed … Did you ever take a ride in an express wagon, on the broad of your back on a mattress, with a broken leg or rib, or suffering the torment of a burning fever, say from the station to the hospital? And did you count the jolts and jars, caused by the stones in the road? Do you remember the agony of that ride? Well in the name of the poor fellows who have taken that ride let me suggest to the inspector of roads that a

few loads of saw dust or cinders would greatly help, Talking of roads leads me to observe that the one to the cemetery could be improved a good deal without hurting the feelings of the electorate. Imperial dining room open … The dining room of the Imperial hotel was thrown open to the public Wednesday and from now on the proprietors will endeavor to provide for their guests the best that the market affords, served in the height of culinary skill, and if you wish to partake of a meal that is at once inviting and appetizing you should give them a call. Died … Cranbrook, Saturday, July 30, of consumption, Sarah Beatrice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas Manners. Deceased was 20 years of age. The funeral was held Sunday from the Methodist church and the remains interred in Cranbrook cemetery. Gin is good for women … If pure and well matured, Gin is a fine tonic specially beneficial to women, It tones up the entire ner-

vous system and aids in regulating nature’s work. Red Cross Canadian Gin is the only Gin recommended by physicians for medicinal use, because it is the only Gin known and guaranteed to be absolutely pure and thoroughly matured for years in bonded warehouses. It is soft and mellow to the palate and has not that burning effect and disagreeable after taste of imported Gin. Quality age and purity guaranteed on every bottle by an official government stamp. Boivin, Wilson and Co, Distributing Agents, Montreal. A smart woman … A woman of true intelligence is a blessing at home, in her circle of friends, and in society. Wherever she goes she carries with her a health giving influence. There is a beautiful harmony about her character that at once inspires a respect which soon runs into love. The influence of such a woman upstages the most statuary kind. She strengthens right principles in the virtuous, incites the self-

ish and indifferent to good actions, and gives to even the light and frivolous a taste for food more substantial than the frothy gossip with which they seek to secrete their minds. Business is good … Business in the stage line between Marysville and Cranbrook seems to be flourishing as there were no less than five stage loads of passengers came overland Monday. Cranbook to Moyie telephone ... The telephone system between Cranbrook and Moyie is now nearing completion, as the linemen expect to reach Moyie on Saturday. The Moyie office will be in the Hotel Kootenay and the charge for communication twenty five cents, with ten cents extra, if the person to be communicated with has to be sent for. Thus Moyie is proving that, without a doubt, she is again a live town. There is talk of installing an electric plant in Moyie. If this is done, Moyie, with her telephone and electric light, will be a town that is, indeed, up-to-date.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. Opponents of the shipment of biosolids to the Nicola Valley near Merritt, B.C., have gained some ammunition, thanks to a recent lab analysis from a wellknown environmental group. Suzuki Foundation senior science and policy adviser John Werring examined one biosolids de-

posit, believed to have come from a sewage treatment plant on Annacis Island, a mainly industrial area of Delta, at the mouth of the Fraser River. Biosolids, which are the organic materials left over from recycled and treated sewage, and Werring says chemicals and contaminants from Annacis Island are transferred to the sludge.

He says many of the contaminants are hydrophobic, meaning they won’t dissolve in water, so they remain in the biosolids, which are then shipped to places like the one in Merritt, where a composting facility is operating. According to Werring, the lab analysis of biosolids from Annacis Island contained alarmingly high amounts of danger-

ous toxins, with heavy metal content well in excess of provincial guidelines. The Ministry of Environment says biosolids contain nutrients essential for plant growth and can be safely applied, but critics of the Merritt-area biosolids operation say it is too close to the Nicola River, which supplies drinking water to the region.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might feel awkward in a conversation with a dear friend when you reveal a certain amount of knowledge about a situation that he or she is unaware of. Avoid revealing your opinions; just state the facts. Tonight: Make it your treat. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You have what others lack, and your energy remains high. Where you choose to direct your focus might surprise some people. You might be more concerned about a family matter than you let on. Tonight: Share a special wish. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Go within yourself to get the answers you want. Sometimes, playing it low-key is crucial. Do a better job of listening and getting to the bottom of a problem. What you hear could trigger a lot of thoughts. Tonight: Not to be found. CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Meetings will point you toward the path for fulfilling a long-term goal. Avoid discouraging a loved one who is feeling a bit off, as this person might have difficulty anchoring in. Tonight: Get some errands done first. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might want to make an effort to get past someone’s resistance. This person seems to have control over you, or perhaps you feel as if you need to answer to him or her. Know that you can do what you want. Tonight: Out late. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Don’t hesitate to seek out someone who is relatively tuned in to your lifestyle. Though you don’t want to get involved in a problem, you might find yourself in one anyway. important. Honor a change of plans, even if you are skeptical about it. Tonight: Listen to a family member. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You could be in a situation where you will need to reach out to your friends for help. Your efforts will make a difference. You have a way of drawing others in. Nevertheless, the interactions can be difficult. Tonight: Say “yes” to living it up! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your even pace helps get the job done. A friend could make a strong point that affects your thoughts about your home life. Know that you might be taking a negative slant on nearly everything. It is simply a phase. Tonight: Take a walk. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Remain playful and creative with someone who tends to be too serious and withdrawn. Know that you do make a difference, but you must work with others’ energy levels.

Reach out to a close friend. Tonight: Add more fun into your day. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Understand where someone else is coming from. It might be difficult to identify with this person, as you come from such different backgrounds. An older friend might want some distance. Make this OK for now. Tonight: Mosey on home. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You could make an error or wish someone had done something differently. You also recognize that you can’t change the situation. Understand that others do care what happens. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I had my high school graduation party at a local restaurant (because our house is too small). My father claimed he was unable to pay for it, and insisted I cover the bill, close to $1,100, saying he will pay me back later. I realize that my parents’ business sometimes goes through hard times, but Dad still manages to eat out frequently. He’s terrible with money, and I am not sure he will ever pay me back. I told him that I expect complete repayment by the middle of August and if I don’t get it, I’ll start selling his vast collection of unused musical instruments. He doesn’t believe me. I am paying for my first year of college through grants, scholarships, my savings and the money I earn from my job. I never expected anything from my parents because I know they can’t afford much. But I had no idea I was going to get stuck with the bill for the party. What do I do? -- Farmer’s Daughter Dear Daughter: Let’s not turn this into a major conflagration. Dad should not have stuck you with a bill for a party neither of you could afford. But selling his musical instruments isn’t the answer, either. Try to remain calm and work out a payment plan with Dad, in writing, with the amount he needs to pay each week until an agreed-upon total is reached. It may take longer than mid-August, and you might also consider paying for part of the bill because the party was for you. But it’s better than the all-out war you are contemplating. We also suggest you involve your mother in this transaction since she, too, has a say in the family finances and may bring a more level head to the discussion. Dear Annie: My husband’s parents live several states away. They are both in poor health, one worse than the other. I fear that when one passes away, my husband will want us to move and take care of the other one. We have two young children and this would involve us leaving our jobs. When we visit, I am miserable the entire time and have no desire to move. We could not ask the remaining parent to move, either, because they both have jobs, as well. Our marriage is struggling right now, so living in separate states would not help us repair our problems. And then there’s the fact that I would want my husband to do this for my parents. So how can I deny him this? -- Unhappy Wife Dear Unhappy: In all fairness, you cannot. Taking care of one set of parents means a willingness to take care of both. But it doesn’t necessarily mean moving across the country. If the parents are near retirement age, it makes just as much sense for them to relocate where your jobs are, instead of vice versa, and where family is already established to help in their care. You and your husband should have this conversation now and talk about realistic alternatives, including retirement or assisted living communities nearby, and the type of medical facilities and senior assistance in the area. If the two of you cannot reach agreement, we recommend asking an unbiased, third party to act as a mediator. Experts have confirmed that the debris found on Reunion Island last week was that of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 that went missing last year, Malaysia’s prime minister said Wednesday. “It is with a very heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts has conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris ... is indeed MH370,” Prime Minister Najib Razak told reporters. The Boeing 777 jetliner disappeared 515 days ago on March 8 while on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. It is believed to have crashed in the Indian Ocean, but the reason remains one of aviation’s biggest mysteries. The first ever physical evidence of the aircraft was found on the French territory of Reunion Island in the Indian ocean, thousands of miles from the site near Australia where the plane is believed to have gone down. Intact and encrusted with barnacles, the metal piece was sent to France for scrutiny by

This flaperon from the trailing edge of a Boeing 777 wing is likely from Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which disappeared March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board. (Lucas Marie/Associated Press) the French civil aviation investigation department known by its acronym BEA, and members from its Malaysian and Australian counterparts. In a statement, Malaysia Airlines said the part of the plane’s wing, known as a “flaperon,” which was found on Reunion Island on July 29 had been confirmed to be of Flight 370. “Family members of passengers and crew have already been informed and we extend our deepest sympathies to those affected,” it said. The statement said this “is indeed a major breakthrough for us in resolving the disappear-

ance of MH370. We expect and hope that there would be more objects to be found which would be able to help resolve this mystery.” Highly technical efforts to extrapolate the jet’s final hours before it would have run out of fuel gave force to the theory that it went down somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean. No one is certain why the plane deviated so far from its planned route. Analysts have said a close look at the wing part could indicate what kind of stress the plane was under as it made impact. It won’t fully solve the mystery of why the plane disappeared, nor will it help pinpoint where the plane crashed. A six-week air and sea search covering 4.6 million square kilometres (1.8 million square miles) of the southern Indian Ocean surface early last year failed to find any trace of the jet. The Reunion Island debris would be consistent with the working theory that the jet went down in the Indian Ocean and the debris travelled with the ocean current which moves counter-clockwise. Malaysian officials, who are leading the investigation into the plane’s disappearance, have said the plane’s movements were consistent with deliberate actions by someone on the plane, suggesting someone in the cockpit intentionally flew the aircraft off-course. Since last year, Australian officials who are leading the search effort have operated on the theory that the plane flew on autopilot for hours before running out of fuel and crashing into the ocean. Investigators settled on this

scenario after analyzing data exchanged between the plane and a satellite, which showed the plane took a straight path across the ocean. Australian Transport Safety Bureau chief commissioner Martin Dolan said last year that investigators assume the autopilot would have to have been manually switched on, again suggesting that someone in the cockpit deliberately steered the plane off-course. In defining the search area, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau also operated on the theory that the crew was unresponsive, possibly suffering from oxygen deprivation, as the plane flew on autopilot. The agency said this was indicated by the loss of radio communications and a long period without any manoeuvring of the plane, though it emphasized this was only a working theory and did not mean that accident investigators led by Malaysia would reach a similar conclusion. A loss of cabin air pressure could cause oxygen deprivation, or hypoxia, which could make pilots unable to perform even basic tasks. Some analysts argue that the apparent lack of damage to the piece of wreckage indicates a controlled landing on the ocean, with the jet sinking largely intact. Another theory is that the jet plunged into the water vertically high dive-style - snapping off both wings but preserving the fuselage. Yet another possibility, supported by a flight simulator, is that an outof-fuel Boeing 777 would belly-flop heavily tail-first, disintegrating on impact.
