Homeless court case wraps up Decision expected to take months Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
Controversial actions of city employees and police officers don’t impact the constitutionality of several bylaws being challenged in court, City of Abbotsford lawyer James Yardley argued Tuesday during the final stages of a trial to determine whether those bylaws breach the rights of homeless men and women. A group of homeless activists – the B.C./Yukon Drug War Survivors (DWS) – allege several of Abbotsford’s bylaws are unconstitutional. Represented by the Pivot Legal Society, they say a combination of the city’s bylaws – which prohibit unauthorized camping in city parks – and a lack of housing options put homeless people at risk and infringe on their right to security of person. They also say city staff have tried to make life difficult for the homeless. On Tuesday during his final arguments, city lawyer James Yardley urged Chief Justice Christopher Hinkson to consider the bylaws in isolation from evidence that police officers pepper-sprayed and slashed the tents of the homeless, and that city officials spread manure on the site of an encampment. Yardley said the bylaws did not authorize or prompt those specific acts, which he said were isolated events by a limited number of people. “They were one-offs,” he said. Those acts, he said, weren’t the focus of the trial. If they were, he said the city would have presented its own evidence surrounding them. He also said the DWS Continued on A6
Pellet gun attack arrest Man, 21, faces charges in random assaults
Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Police have arrested a 21-year-old man in relation to a series of random pellet gun attacks that occurred in Abbotsford over a 10-day period last month. Const. Ian MacDonald said charges being considered against the man include mischief and assault with a weapon. He cannot be named until charges are formally laid.
MacDonald said investigators are working to identify and locate at least one other person involved in the assaults. He said the arrest came as a result of “extensive media and social media coverage” and witness reports, including video footage that an individual took in central Abbotsford during one of the incidents in which no one was injured. Subway hit twice by robber Same location targeted on July 28 and 30 The same Subway restaurant in Abbotsford was hit twice within 48 hours last week by a gun-toting robber. The first incident took place Tuesday, July 28 at about 9:45 p.m. at the Subway restaurant at 1975 McCallum Rd. A man carrying a large duffel bag and a handgun entered the restaurant, demanded cash from one of the three employees and left through a back door. The suspect was described as tanned, approximately 5’ 8”, and wearing a face covering or balaclava and a black hoodie with a large Adidas logo and white stripes. He was also wearing a distinc-
tive bracelet on his left wrist. The same location was hit again on Thursday, July 30 at 10:05 p.m. The suspect in this case was also carrying a handgun, but had a backpack instead of a duffel bag. He, too, demanded cash from one of the staff. He was wearing a black ski mask, a black leather jacket and black pants. The robberies are being investigated by the major crime unit of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). Anyone with information is asked to contact the APD at 604-859-5225, text abbypd (222973) or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Kent Pietsch has spent years pointing the nose of his plane at the sky before cutting the engine and falling weightlessly back to Earth. His passenger on Wednesday afternoon had not. And so, as Pietsch’s single-engine Interstate Cadet spiraled nosefirst towards the fields surrounding Abbotsford International Airport, this reporter sat behind Pietsch and tried to deduce whether the airplane – and his life – would be saved.. Pietsch looked back. A photo was taken. And then suddenly, the plane was flying again like planes are supposed to fly – not at the ground, but at the horizon. The reporter’s stomach, though, was not in its typical position. This weekend, Pietsch will be back in the air, minus the queasy passenger, entertaining the crowds at the Abbotsford International Airshow. Over the airshow’s three days, crowds of tens of thousands will watch the airshow veteran perform seven
TYLER OLSEN Abbotsford News
Airshow performer Kent Pietsch takes a glance back at his terrified passenger as his airplane spirals towards the ground during a demonstration flight Wednesday. times with multiple routines, the most unconventional of which sees him land on a platform atop a standard-length pickup truck. That trick – which got its start in Abbotsford, when Pietsch bought an RV from a local and had a flat-bed rack bolted to its top – didn’t go off as planned the first time. “I tried it and couldn’t get on it,” he said. “I landed and thought ‘Man, I just wasted a lot of money.’ ” Pietsch couldn’t see
his wheels. The blind spot, which wasn’t a problem when he was landing on a 150-foot runway, posed more of a challenge when landing on a platform the width and length of an RV. “I kept moving around. I was having a hard time seeing.” Eventually, Pietsch was able to master the technique, in part by approaching the vehicle from the side. The RV has since been replaced, and Pietsch has performed the trick across
North America. Pietsch has a long history in aviation. He was previously an airline pilot and has been performing aerobatic routines for more than 40 years. His Jelly Bellysponsored plane is just 800 pounds. That light weight, combined with a 90-horsepower engine and 37-foot-long wings, allows Pietsch to push the limits of what is possible in the air. Quick with a laugh, Pietsch also performs an airborne comedy
routine that sees him mimic an erratic lessthan-adept pilot who somehow manages to not crash. The routine encapsulates Pietsch’s goals for each show. “Fly it as safe as you can and have as much fun as you can.” The airshow begins Friday with a twilight show. Gates open at 3:30 p.m., with static displays and exhibit areas open, along with the kids zone and autograph booths. The opening ceremonies take place at 5:45, followed by the Snowbirds at 6 p.m. and Breitling Jet Team at 6:45 p.m. followed by other performances. Saturday and Sunday feature full-day airshows, with gates opening at 9 a.m. and the airshow opening at 11 a.m. The CF-18 Hornet flies at 11:45 a.m., the Horseman Flight Team takes to the air at 12:40 p.m., and the US Air Force F-22 Raptor Jet performs a demonstration at 2:55 p.m. For a full schedule, visit abbotsfordairshow. com.

doesn’t have standing to claim suffering from the acts. But Hinkson expressed skepticism that such acts could be justified. “I don’t know how possibly you defend pepper-spraying an empty tent, cutting the tent,” he said. Yardley also questioned the degree to which the city’s bylaws jeopardize the security of homeless men and women, arguing that DWS witnesses testified they preferred living outside. He pointed to testimony of one man who said he didn’t want a roommate, while another cited a previous bad experience at the Salvation Army for not wanting to stay there. He said the DWS didn’t cite any evidence to show how the lives of those living in the Gladys Avenue homeless camp had improved since the city stopped enforcing its bylaw there. Hinkson. though, questioned the wisdom in evicting homeless people. “The evidence is consistent from service providers that there aren’t enough places to go,” he said. “I don’t understand how telling them to go away from place A is any answer at all.” Yardley said the city’s homeless do have other options – be it in shelters, with friends or in other towns. He said that as long as there are some options somewhere, homeless men and women don’t have the right to “appropriate … publicly held lands” by setting up long-term camps. Yardley argued that an order allowing the homeless to camp in a limited geographic area would “endorse the approach taken at the camp on Gladys Avenue and Cyril which, the evidence shows, contains a ‘criminal element,’ and is ‘too wild’ for many of the witnesses who testified.’” Yardley also said it was “outrageous” for DWS to suggest that the city has yet to take any concrete steps to help its homeless. “The city is moving in the right direction,” he said. Yardley also pointed to evidence that several residents of the Jubilee Park encampment are no longer homeless, and said there is no evidence that DWS Abbotsford founder Barry Shantz was ever homeless. A decision in the case could take months. See related story on Page A7.

back seat of a 2006 Chrysler Sebring holding a gun and pointing it out an open window. MacDonald said the pictures clearly indicate that someone else would have been driving the vehicle at the time. He said the video was among the best pieces of evidence investigators reviewed in the case and in being able to make an arrest. “Certainly, this was some of the clearest images we came across, and ended up being excellent evidence and information for us … It really tied things together,” MacDonald said. He said the man arrested has had “quite extensive dealings with (police) in the past,” although he did not elaborate. Police are continuing to investigate a total of 23 pellet gun attacks that occurred between July 18 and 27 throughout Abbotsford, with a cluster of assaults in the Clearbrook area. Some were reported as far east as Sumas Mountain and as far west as Mt. Lehman Road. A total of nine pedestrians were struck and injured by the pellets, and witnesses reported that the shooter was in a dark-coloured vehicle. Vehicles and homes were also struck. THE HOMELESS CASE Human rights and public lands
Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
After six weeks of testimony and legal arguments, the future of city policies towards homeless encampments in Abbotsford now lies in the hands of BC Supreme Court Chief Justice Christopher Hinkson. The trial has pitted the British Columbia/Yukon Association of Drug War Survivors (DWS) against the City of Abbotsford. DWS, represented by lawyers from the Pivot Legal Society, contends that bylaws that prohibit unauthorized camping on city-owned land breach the homeless population’s charter right to security. They argue the city has failed to provide shelter options and cannot stop the homeless from making camp in the only spaces available. The city contends that shelter options exist, and that the removal of the bylaws would not improve the lives of the homeless. They say the challenges faced by the homeless are not sufficient to allow them to “appropriate” public land for their encampments. But Hinkson is being asked to do more than simply agree with the DWS or the city. Both sides have requested the judge to make specific rulings and pronouncements regarding the case and surrounding issues. They have also each asked for costs related to the legal case.
The DWS position The DWS seeks a finding that parts of the city’s street and traffic bylaw, good neighbour bylaw and parks bylaw are unconstitutional because they prohibit the homeless from setting up camps. Should Hinkson make such a ruling, the DWS is seeking an order telling the city how its bylaws can conform to the charter. At trial, lawyers for the DWS have suggested that the judge could make a ruling that permits camping – and the erection of camping structures – in certain types of parks, perhaps where they would be less intrusive. Lawyers for the group have told Hinkson they realize they
cannot order the city to take action to provide more housing for the homeless, but that in the absence of such, camping on public land cannot be prohibited. The DWS also seeks a declaration that the city’s bylaws and the actions of its staff members have discriminated against the homeless as a group and breached their rights to freedom of assembly. A previous court case re-
the order sought by the DWS would remove its ability to regulate its public spaces. The city says it simply seeks to protect parks as public land for the benefit of all of Abbotsford’s residents. The city has also asked Hinkson to make permanent an injunction granted in December 2013 that resulted in the eviction of a large homeless camp in Jubilee Park.
DWS – say that number is a likely undercount. But the city has cast doubt on the accuracy and reliability of the count’s results. The sides also differ as to the seriousness of the situation facing the homeless. The DWS contends that the bylaws put the homeless at risk by reducing their shelter options. The city argues that the homeless are no safer in camps like that on Gladys Avenue. Hinkson has said testimony about the state of homeless encampments reveals reasons for the city’s concern. But he also said service providers have been consistent in their testimony about the city‘s lack of shelter options.
The testimony
In addition to defending itself against a suit alleging its bylaws are unconstitutional, the City of Abbotsford is asking for a permanent File photo injunction prohibiting camping at Jubilee Park. garding the homeless in Victoria allows tents to be set up overnight, provided they are removed during the day. The DWS is seeking a broader ruling that allows camps to remain in place during the day.
The city position The city wants Hinkson to find that its bylaws don’t violate any portions of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. But if they do breach the charter rights of the homeless, the city contends that the violations are justified under the first section of the charter, which guarantees freedoms “subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.” The city’s laws, they argue, try to balance conflicting interests, and accounting for the circumstances for every single park user is impossible. The city says that granting
The facts The DWS’s case largely rests on evidence it says shows Abbotsford’s homeless population have nowhere else to go. DWS lawyers say the city has failed to provide housing options for the homeless, a charge the city has forcefully countered. The degree to which Abbotsford has tried to help its homeless might not matter, though, with Hinkson suggesting that it is not for a judge to pronounce upon the actions of the city and its elected representatives – whether positive or negative. Throughout the trial, the DWS pointed to a homeless count undertaken in March 2014 by the Mennonite Central Committee on behalf of the Fraser Valley Regional District. That count found 151 people who it considered homeless, although some were couch-surfing or not living outside. Those who conducted the study – and lawyers for the
Weeks of testimony under oath have resulted in several revelations about Abbotsford’s homeless camps and the city’s policies regarding them. The court heard that the homeless were occasionally labelled “undesirables” by city staffers. The court also heard about an email in which a staffer wrote, about the homeless camps, “…I don’t think there is a solution to this but we can attempt to make it difficult for them.” The court heard that booby traps were sometimes found at homeless camps. A homeless woman testified that Barry Shantz, a leader of the DWS, paid people to march in a protest in June down Gladys Avenue. The court also heard an Abbotsford Police constable admit to pepper-spraying a tent to encourage the occupant to move. The court heard evidence that fish fertilizer was used under a tree at the Gladys Avenue camp to deter people from congregating under the tree’s branches. There were also discussions about using the fertilizer in Lonzo Park.
The decision Final arguments concluded Thursday in New Westminster. Hinkson will take many weeks to formulate his decision, which will be delivered in court at a later date, not set at press time.

B.C. Views Now that the political back-and-forth is over, there are two questions left about the Petronas-led proposal to make the biggest private-sector investment in B.C. history. Will it actually happen? And is it a good deal or a bad one? Premier Christy Clark ducked the first question on the day the project agreement for Pacific Northwest LNG was approved by the B.C. legislature. “After many predictions about the Canucks and the Alberta election, I don’t make predictions any more,” Clark said. “But I can say that this project has gone farther than any of our critics said that it would.” For what it’s worth, my prediction is on record: it will go ahead. The latest evidence is the company’s continued, costly effort to gain federal and local approval for a suspension bridge to Lelu Island to minimize the marine impact.
Lax Kw’alaams Band members could not have had details on that change from an underwater pipeline when they voted to oppose the project in May. Is it a good deal? The mayors of Prince Rupert and Port Edward have made their views clear – they see it as a lifeline for an area that has struggled for years with a faded forest and fishing industry. The B.C. NDP is also now clear, having voted against the project agreement in the brief summer session of the legislature that concluded last week. Whether the project proceeds or not, this will be a key election issue in 2017. NDP leader John Horgan and other MLAs made much of the lack of job guarantees, pointing to similar projects in Australia. Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman issued a statement with excerpts from the state of Western Australia’s agreement for the Gorgon LNG project. The so-called guarantees contain qualifiers like this: “... except in those cases where … it is not reasonable or economically practical to do so, use labour available within Western Australia.”
Obviously there were no job guarantees, which could only exist in a command economy – in other words, a communist dictatorship. Everyone agrees that specialized trades such as welding alloys for lowtemperature operation will be brought in. And LNG processing trains will be shipped in pre-fabricated from places like South Korea, as they have been in
B.C. producers would pay an LNG income tax, which is a first in the history of the industry. Australia and elsewhere. Pacific Northwest LNG is on record with federal regulators that in the latter stages of construction, the use of foreign labour for the project could reach 70 per cent. Does that make it a bad deal? Perhaps B.C. could attempt to develop this expertise from the ground up. It seems to me that was tried with aluminum ship fabrication, and it didn’t work
out too well. For David Keane, president of the B.C. LNG Alliance, the question is how many large LNG projects, pipelines and all, can be managed at the same time as the Site C dam is being built. It was skilled labour shortages, and particularly a shortage of supervisors, that caused Australia to lose some of its proposed projects. Keane said all LNG proponents here want to use as much local labour as they can, because it’s less expensive and it builds local support. And he disagrees that B.C. is a sweet deal for the industry. Among other things, pipelines have to be built across two mountain ranges. Not only that, B.C. producers would pay an LNG income tax, which is a first in the history of the industry. Add to that PST, GST, payroll taxes, municipal taxes and federal and provincial corporate income taxes. Add aboriginal revenue sharing, and we have a deal. letters
Setting the tone for the day This letter is directed to the lovely young fellow in the silver car that paid for my purchase at the Mt. Lehman Starbucks July 30 just before 8. I wish I could have caught up to you to thank you in person! I’m sure this type of anonymous generosity happens a lot, but you need to know that I had just come off the freeway, after a frustrating encounter with a disrespectful and rude driver. I was still grumbling to myself about the incident as I pulled up to the drive-through window to find
out my coffee was free. With your kind gesture, you reminded me that there are some really great people in the world that do things just because it makes them feel good. I was then able to laugh at the ridiculousness of being so upset at the other driver’s bad behaviour and let it go. And just so you know, I was also picking up coffee for a co-worker, so you set the tone for not just one person’s day, but two! Arlene Thygesen
Shocked by some dog owners When I take my dog for a walk, and she does her business, I pick it up. Yet, other dog owners out there think it is okay to leave their dog’s business all over the sidewalk and on other people’s grass.
I have even seen people throw their poop bags in the street. I am totally disgusted at the way people treat other people. They may not have dogs and it is not right to leave your dog’s business on other people’s property.
I am shocked and disgusted at the other dog owners out there. Pick up your dog’s business and make us dog owners proud to walk our dogs and not deface the sidewalks where kids walk. Theresa Garrard

Man suffers serious injuries Pedestrian struck by pickup truck
A 75-year-old pedestrian remains in serious condition in hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday morning in Abbotsford. The collision took place just before 11 a.m. at the intersection of Guilford Drive and Marshall Road. Const. Ian MacDonald said a woman in her 30s was driving a 2013 Dodge pickup south on Guilford and turning right on Marshall at the time of the crash. The pedestrian was on the north side of Marshall Road and looking to cross at Guilford.
MacDonald said investigators are still piecing together the exact circumstances of the lowspeed collision. He said the driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with police. The pedestrian, who suffered a head injury and possibly other injuries, was initially taken by ground ambulance to a local hospital but was then airlifted to a Lower Mainland trauma centre. Roads in the area were closed to traffic for several hours while collision reconstructionists remained on the scene.

Spectacular falls are worth a visit Mark

ather than wile away a hot afternoon in the shade of the big cherry tree, I decided to explore, for the first time, Cascade Falls regional park nestled deep in the woods north east of Mission. Due to our unseasonably dry weather, along Sylvester Road approaching the park, I mused that with all
the dry creek beds just passed over, there may not be any “falls to see. Once in the parking lot however, and beginning the 250-metre upwards trek, I could hear the sounds of gurgling, then rushing water. The falls were cascading, as glimpses through the forest attested, and by the

time I reached the new, but rusticallybuilt stairs, the cataract was clearly visible. The hike up is steep, but not too onerous, though the trail is definitely not wheelchair friendly. Handicapped accessibility to the falls can be made, but only via the adjacent and rough forest service road that meets a boardwalk at the viewing area. The falls are definitely worthy of a visit – the 30-metre cascade flowing though a notch to free-fall into a beautiful and clear cauldron. What makes the sight even more spectacular is the relatively new suspension bridge that spans the canyon carved by millennia of water flow, allowing viewing and photos from both sides of the falls. Downstream and far below you can catch glimpses of sundappled pools and the sounds of kids playing in the water. Despite the beauty, I still continued to ponder where all the water was going, because it certainly isn’t visible flowing under the main road leading to the park turn-off. On the way home, I again rubbernecked what I thought to be Cascade Creek. Bone dry, the stream bed a wide swath of rustcoloured gravel. The next day I called the parks depart-
ment of Fraser Valley Regional District with two questions. The first related to information on the interpretive sign at the falls viewing area which referred to a run-ofriver power project. I thought, if there is one above the falls, it must be doing a good job to maintain the flow that still provides a beautiful cascade during this summer’s drought. The second question was “where does the water go? According to Christina Vugteveen, FVRD’s manager of parks, it appears Cascade is free of any power projects, the signage relating to a financial contribution to the park to help build the suspension bridge and trail infrastructure. As to where the water went, all she could offer was that it eventually flowed to Stave Lake, and emailed me a topographic map showing blue lines depicting the route of the creek. Curiosity got the best of me, so a couple of days later I returned to the park, and walked down the watercourse. And some six hundred metres or so from the falls, the mystery was solved. The visible creek ends in a jumble of rocks – its flow going, as I thought, underground presumably to make its subterranean way to the lake. Regardless, Cascade
Falls is definitely worth visiting, and I will go back when our normal rainy season returns in earnest because I’m certain with increased flow the waterfall will be even more spectacular. Cascade Falls is easy to locate from Abbotsford: Travel
north to Mission and after crossing the bridge head east on Highway 7 for about six kilometres to Sylvester Road. Before that though, be sure to check out the bestdisguised cell phone tower I’ve ever seen near the entrance road to Hatzic Lake.

In one short year from now, Abbotsford will once again welcome over 220 young athletes and another 700 coaches and officials from around the province to participate in the Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games. The event was a roaring success with over 400 spectators in attendance. Organizers were delight to see such a solid show of support from the Abbotsford community at large. Thanks to local businesses: Starbucks, Sapphire Sound, Advantage Foods, Save-On Foods, Staples and Bourquin Printing for supporting the event. To mark the occasion fittingly, local youth of all ages provided entertainment to an appreciative audience including four members of the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame. Breast milk donations needed
Small, sick babies in Fraser Health Neonatal Intensive Care Units [NICUs] are benefitting from generous donations of human milk from across the region, but the need is increasing, and the supply is not. In Abbotsford, donations have fallen dramatically, from 304,629 millilitres (10,201 ounces) last year to only 43,577 millilitres (1,453 ounces) this year. Much like donating blood, donating human milk can be life-saving for premature babies who are prone to infections and illness. Women who are currently breastfeeding can visit bcwomensmilkbank.ca and do a quick screening to see if they are eligible to donate any extra breast milk they may have. Once they have been fully screened by the Provincial Milk Bank they get blood work at their local lab. Their doctor is contacted to confirm the mother and baby are healthy. Mothers pump their milk and store it in the freezer in milk storage bags. A minimum donation of 150 ounces is usually required. Now, every health unit in Fraser Health is now also a milk collection depot and mothers can drop off their screened donor milk to the health unit in their own community. Fraser Health will ship the frozen breast milk from the depots to the Provincial Milk Bank in Vancouver where it will be processed and pasteurized. The pasteurized milk is sent back to the NICUs at Royal Columbian and Surrey Memorial Hospitals to nourish and protect the tiniest and most fragile patients. For more information visit bcwomensmilkbank. ca.

Jam in Jubilee
2015 Jam in Jubilee champions community engagement This July, Jam in Jubilee was a huge success — hundreds of people enjoyed the music, food, and games at Jubilee Park on Thursday evenings. Jam in Jubilee is a free annual festival in downtown Abbotsford that features music and booths from local vendors and community organizations. The atmosphere is people-friendly — having set vendors up near the back of the park allows the focus to be on the visitors in the centre of the park. As Jam in Jubilee grows in popularity, the organization and execution of the event becomes more efficient and friendly. This year, the event implemented a wristband system for alcohol
consumption, making licensing easy in a fun but contained environment. Local artists such as Alea Rae, Little Wild, Casinos, and Jordan Klassen performed, bringing life to the event without dominating the space. Jam in Jubilee was full of people connecting and communicating — simply getting together and enjoying each other’s company. With dogs, bikes, and kids, attending Jam in Jubilee was like visiting someone’s backyard. Jam in Jubilee will be back next year — to find out how to be a part of the fun, please visit jaminjubillee.com.

Aaron Prevost of Abbotsford is on the hunt. The local amateur bodybuilder won the Overall Men’s Physique event at the Vancouver Pro/Am & Expo held at the end of July, and says his sights are now set on obtaining his International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) pro card – necessary for amateur bodybuilders to make the step up to the professional stage. Next up is the Canadian Natural Nationals, an IFBB world qualifier event where Prevost, 29, must place in the top five in his category to gain entry onto the amateur international stage.

The Abbotsford native says he does not use steroids or drugs. Many events test for such substances when competing within the physique category. The most difficult aspect of it all, he says, is the lack of social life. You need to be dedicated, day-in, day-out. This means, for him at least, a six-times per week training schedule, which coincides with a strict diet. A date has not yet been announced for next year’s Canadian Natural Nationals.

Junior Cards roll into the playoffs Brandon KOSTINUK Abbotsford News
The Abbotsford Junior Cardinals are hot. The club enters the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League’s (BCJPBL) Provincial Championship having won 17 of their last 18 games. “The confidence level is high and we’re one of the teams others will be afraid to face,” said head coach Shawn Besse. The Junior Cards finished the season in third place and are riding a nine-game winning streak, with several players leading the league or vying for the league-lead in key areas. Abbotsford’s Cade Smith leads the BCJPBL with 59 strikeouts, while fellow pitcher Jarrod Manick finished second, just behind Smith with 57. Manick also sits fifth amongst ERA leaders at 2.27. Junior Cards infielder Robert Bradley finished the season with a league-leading 25 stolen bases, while Dylan Ohlsen’s 23 RBIs on the season puts him third amongst the league. The Cardinals’ Gage Buck was fifth among RBI leaders with 21, while Brett Bass posted 20. The post-season format consists of the top eight teams, broken up into two pools of four, facing off in round-robin play, which begins today (Friday). The top two in each pool will then move on to the semi-final and championship match, which will be played Sunday, Aug. 9. With Abbotsford finishing third, they will face second-seed, North Shore Junior Twins, along with the North Delta Junior Blue Jays and White Rock Junior Tritons, who are the sixth and seventh seeds, respectively. Besse said he isn’t concerned about the Junior Twins, despite North Shore’s home field advantage and a 3-1 edge over the Junior Cards during the regular season. “They are a team that plays small ball and situational stuff just like us,” said Besse. Abbotsford dominated the season series against North Delta and White Rock, defeating the former in all four matches while taking three of four against the Junior Tritons. Abbotsford enters this weekend’s fray at Parkgate Park in North Vancouver in full health, and open their post-season against North Delta. The Junior Cards follow that up, Saturday, with games against White Rock and North Shore.

Its humble 135 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque being produced from its 1.4L, MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder might look mediocre on paper, but it brings this car to life. And of the three available engines offered, the base, naturally aspirated 1.4L MultiAir, the Turbo, or the Turbo from the Abarth version (160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque), the 500 Turbo (middle child of engines) is my top pick. It is spirited, peppy and makess driving fun. It’s enough horsepower too play with, but not enough to get into too much trouble. Adding to the fun factor is w the introduction of an all-new uAisin heavy-duty six-speed auual lover to tomatic transmission. A manual the core, I quite liked the new addition to the fold. It also took the edge off in urban commuting. And for the times when you want a little more gusto, there’s a “Sport” mode. You’ll find this magical button on the instrument panel. What it does is change the throttle mapping for improved engine responsiveness. While I love the car as a whole, I still have a couple of quibbles with it. The instrument panel (with the push

And it looks misplaced. But for the reasons I wrestle with the Fiat 500 Turbo, there are plenty more favourable features that put me at ease. The optional Beats stereo system sounds great in the cabin, the leather-wrapped sport steering wheel and shift knob fee feel nice between my fingers and th the optional red leather seats make the interior pop. Then there’s the drivability. I love iits competency in corners. They’re excited about their car and want to share the love. The Fiat 500 Turbo Hatchback has a starting MSRP of $21,395. But with all the options, the price as tested comes out to $30,370.
