1. It’s about Thyme! If you have not been keeping up a regular regimen of watering and feeding, the recent hot and dry weather may have taken a toll on your lawn. If you are looking for low-maintenance alternatives, there are many, depending on the use of your space. One of the most popular perennial ground covers is thyme. There are some more upright plants, but creeping varieties are low-growing, spread easily and quickly and can stand up to light of foot traffic. 2. Summer with Sun-Loving Succulents. A plant that is often used in green roofs, but will also make a great ground cover in a bright and sunny area is sedum. Many creeping sedum varieties will stay close in height to grass and may even mimic the look of grass if you choose all green varieties. There are, however, many other, exciting colour options. Sedum do best in lean soil and with little water. 3. Looking to Nature. Native species are always a great choice when you are looking for plants with a great track record. A popular ground cover in the Northwest is kinnikinnick or bearberry. Its long trailing branches are strong and thickly covered with dark green, leathery leaves. the plant has clusters of small, urn-shaped, white to pink flowers. They turn into vibrant red berries that are a favourite with birds. Kinnikinnick especially shines in dry, sunny locations and is a great option for landscaping steep banks and rocky slopes. 4. Roll out the Purple Carpet. Also known as carpetweed, ajuga is an indispensable ground cover. Individual plants grow as rosettes, but their leaves intertwine to form a solid plant carpet. The foliage can feature shades of purple and burgundy, but also pink, silver and cream and from spring to early summer blue, lavender, pink or white flower spikes adorn the plants. 5. When You’re Blue. A native of the Mediterranean, periwinkle was introduced to North America as an ornamental ground cover and medicinal herb. It grows best in partially shaded areas and is quite prolific - one small plant can spread to eight feet across. Periwinkle can even creep down steep banks with its dense cover. Early in the season, small blossoms in periwinkle blue will dot the foliage. 6. All Around the Mulberry Bush. It can be a challenge to find ground covers for shade areas, such as spots under the canopy of trees. Lamium is an excellent choice for areas in your yard that are protected at least from hot afternoon sun. The plants produce dainty snapdragon-like flowers in colors from white, to pink and purple, however, the attractive two-toned foliage comes in many shades and provides interest even when the flowers are not in bloom. 7. Hanging Low. Known as a hedging plant, caragana also comes in several low-growing varieties as well that make great ground covers. ‘Walker’ has fine, almost ferny foliage with yellow, pea-like flowers hanging below the weeping branches in mid spring. ‘Pygmy’ is a small, spiny shrub with a globe shaped head. They fine textured green foliage turns yellow in the fall. 8. Evergreen Lawn. When it comes to large scale ground covers or plants to fill in areas between boulders, junipers are an excellent evergreen to turn to. There are several low-growing varieties, often easily identified as such by their discriptive names, such as ‘Blue Rug’, ‘Blue Carpet’ or ‘Calgary Carpet’. Another great option is ‘Prince of Wales’. Junipers have fine-textured foliage in various shades of green that will give you colour interest year-round. 9. Turning to Conifers. The advantage of conifers as a ground cover is that you will have four season colour. Dwarf blue spruce is a flat top, globe shaped evergreen with striking silver blue foliage and a wonderful addition to any landscape. In order to maintain its dwarf globe shape, you simply prune out any upright shoots. 10. Pining for Green. There are two members of the mugo pine family that especially lend themselves for mass plantings as ground covers. The ‘Dwarf’ and ‘Slow Mount’ mugo pines have dark green needles and are extremely low maintenance. They are naturally compact plants, but can be further controlled by light pruning.

The Weekend View
B.C. Views: Prospects for B.C.’s biggest investment
by Tom Fletcher Now that the political back-and-forth is over, there are two questions left about the Petronas-led proposal to make the biggest private-sector investment in B.C. history. Will it actually happen? And is it a good deal or a bad one? Premier Christy Clark ducked the first question on the day the project agreement for Pacific Northwest LNG was approved by the B.C. legislature. “After many predictions about the Canucks and the Alberta election, I don’t make predictions any more,” Clark said. “But I can say that this project has gone farther than any of our critics said that it would.” For what it’s worth, my prediction is on record: it will go ahead. The latest evidence is the company’s continued, costly effort to gain federal and local approval for a suspension bridge to Lelu Island to minimize the marine impact. Lax Kw’alaams Band members could not have had details on that change from an underwater pipeline when they voted to oppose the project in May. Is it a good deal? The mayors of Prince
Rupert and Port Edward have made their views clear – they see it as a lifeline for an area that has struggled for years with a faded forest and fishing industry. The B.C. NDP is also now clear, having voted against the project agreement in the brief summer session of the legislature that concluded last week. Whether the project proceeds or not, this will be a key election issue in 2017. NDP leader John Horgan and other MLAs made much of the lack of job guarantees, pointing to similar projects in Australia. Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman issued a statement with excerpts from the state of Western Australia’s agreement for the Gorgon LNG project. The so-called guarantees contain qualifiers like this: “... except in those cases where … it is not reasonable or economically practical to do so, use labour available within Western Australia.” Obviously there were no job guarantees, which could only exist in a command economy, in other words a communist dictatorship. Everyone agrees that specialized trades such as welding alloys for low-temperature operation will be brought in. And LNG processing trains will be shipped in pre-fabricated from places like South Korea, as they have been in Australia and elsewhere. Pacific Northwest

LNG is on record with federal regulators that in the latter stages of construction, the use of foreign labour for the project could reach 70 per cent. Does that make it a bad deal? Perhaps B.C. could attempt develop this expertise from the ground up. It seems to me that was tried with aluminum ship fabrication, and it didn’t work out too well. For David Keane, president of the B.C. LNG Alliance, the question is how many large LNG projects, pipelines and all, can be managed at the same time as the Site C dam is being built. It was skilled labour shortages, and particularly a shortage of supervisors, that caused Australia to lose some of its proposed projects. Keane said all LNG proponents here want to use as much local labour as they can, because it’s less expensive and it builds local support. And he disagrees that B.C. is a sweet deal for the industry. Among other things, pipelines have to be built across two mountain ranges. Not only that, B.C. producers would pay an LNG income tax, which is a first in the history of the industry. Add to that PST, GST, payroll taxes, municipal taxes and federal and provincial corporate income taxes. Add aboriginal revenue sharing, and we have a deal. ceremonies followed by another major show later that afternoon and a reception for the band that evening. Sunday saw the band off to Barkerville, where they performed, spent time exploring, ending their visit by panning for gold and then onto Prince George. At Prince George, they performed for and with a day care group, went shopping and roller blading. Monday saw the band off to Jasper where they again put on a show for the
community that had the audience requesting encores. Tuesday, July 21st, they headed home with a stop at the Columbia Icefields where they got to go out onto the glacier. All told the band performed eight times in the seven days we were away. Struggling economy the biggest election topic By Tom Fletcher Conservative leader Stephen Harper promised an expanded tax break for hiring apprentices Monday, as parties started an extended summer election campaign. Campaigning in Laval, Quebec, Harper announced that if his government is re-elected Oct. 19, employers will receive a credit up to $2,500 a year for wages paid to qualifying apprentices for all four years of their training. Harper’s Conservatives established the program in 2006, with a credit of up to $2,000 per year for the first two years, to encourage hiring and training. NDP leader Thomas Mulcair began his campaign emphasizing signs of weakness in the Canadian economy, with the latest statistics showing the economy contracting in the first five months of the year. “Wages are falling, incomes are stag-
nant, and household debt is skyrocketing,” Mulcair said at his campaign kickoff in Hull, Quebec. “Middle-class families are working harder than ever, and can’t get ahead.” Liberal leader Justin
nominated candidates.

in debate formats, as first Harper and then Mulcair declined the traditional debate organized by TV networks. The first national debate is set for Thursday, Aug. 6, hosted by Maclean’s magazine. Among the topics will be sharp differences over Canada’s role in the international military action
against Islamic State terrorists in Iraq and Syria. Both the NDP and Liberals are promising to end Canadian bombing of Islamic State positions. Mulcair would withdraw all military personnel from Iraq and Syria, while Trudeau supports keeping military trainers in place, with both promising increased humanitarian aid.

If this doesn’t look easy, it’s because it isn’t. That’s why steer wrestling is a huge draw at the rodeo.
For your information: Steer wrestling rules While the rules of many professional sports can be confusing, steer wrestling has a pretty simple set of dos and don’ts. Rules of steer wrestling include: The bulldogger’s horse must
not break the rope barrier in front of it at the beginning of a run, but must wait for the animal escaping from the adjacent chute to release the rope. Breaking the rope barrier early adds
a 10 second penalty to the bulldogger’s time. If the steer stumbles or falls before the bulldogger brings it down, he must either wait for it to rise or help it up before wrestling it to the ground. If the bulldogger completely misses the steer on his way down, he will receive a “no time”.
You can win Pro Rodeo tickets! The Cranbrook Pro Rodeo is coming on August 14. The rodeo is always a great show with some of the best riders and bull fighters on the continent. You can win a set of two tickets to either the Friday or Sunday rodeo, or the
always fun Barn Dance on Saturday night. Just email editor@kootenayadvertiser.com or send us a message on the Kootenay News Advertiser Facebook page to be entered into the draw. Yeehaw!

2015 Rebel There are tough-looking trucks and then there are trucks that back that up with enough raw power and four-wheel-drive competency to take on whatever territory its driver chooses to tackle. One look at the Ram 1500 Rebel’s spec sheet and it’s obvious this pickup has been designed to deliver both. The bar for off-road-capable light-duty trucks (ones with the 1500 designation) was set for the 2011 model year with the release of the Ford F-150 Raptor. This truck arrived with a 411-horsepower V8 along with oversized off-road meats, jacked-up ride height, tougher suspension and a wider stance. The Raptor also came with its own very recognizable sheetmetal and stance. Despite a hefty price tag, it wasn’t long before Raptors could be seen practically everywhere, often piloted by owners who never intended to put even one wheel over a boulder. For these folks, the truck’s image was what mattered most. Sensing a trend, other pickup producers launched similar mod-
els. Toyota introduced the Tundra TRD Pro series for 2015 and now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has the Ram 1500 Rebel for pickup buyers to ponder. So far General Motors is sticking to its tried-and-true Z71 off-road package for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. These new entrants are catching a break from Ford, which won’t be introducing a second-generation Raptor until late 2016 as a 2017 model. Rebel spotters need look no further than the truck’s “twinsnorkel” aluminum hood and blacked-out nose, instead of the Ram’s traditional cross-hair grille. Oversized “RAM” lettering stamped onto the tailgate lets everyone know what you’re driving. Other Rebel-specific exterior trim includes silver-painted skid plates below the grille, black bodyside and fender moldings and black front and rear bumpers. Lastly, the Rebel comes with its own 17-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch-tall Toyo “Open Country” all-terrain tires that are

notable for their aggressive tread pattern. The rubber, augmented by specially tuned Bilstein-brand shocks and a modified suspension help the Rebel sit up nice and tall. The standard air sus-
pension provides more than 25 centimetres of ground clearance. The cab is notable for using vinyl seats (more durable than leather) trimmed in red, which is a theme that carries over to the armrest, control panel, floor con-
sole and fresh air vents. The Rebel is based on the Ram four-door Crew Cab body with a 67-inch-long bed. There’s no other choice here, however you do get a choice when it comes to drivetrain. The base $53,600 (including destination charges) 4x4 Rebel is equipped with a 3.6 litre V6 that makes 305 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. If you insist on maximum power, head for is a 5.7-litre “˙Hemi” V8 version (also with four-wheeldrive) that muscles out 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. It lists for $54,900. For consumption, the V6 4x4 Rebel is rated at 14.6 l/100 km in the city and 10.1 highway. The one-and-only transmission is an eight-speed automatic, but each engine gets its own 4x4 system. The V6 has a part-time setup, while the Hemi’s comes with an on-demand type that can be set to automatically engage when necessary. There is no centre-locking differential, but a “rear anti-spin differential” that creates a similar effect by applying engine torque to both wheels. Rebels arrive fully loaded, with only a few options, including a backup camera and a trifolding hard tonneau cover. As a stand-alone model, the Ram 1500 Rebel certainly has the right stuff, but given some non-conformist truck buyers’ penchant for tricked-out, jackedup pickups, the Rebel might also prove tempting as a platform for even wilder aftermarket modifications.
Safety Tip:
As a premium model, the Rebel comes with just about every interior trick in the book, except leather seating. Assuming you’ll be doing some off-roading, vinyl seating will likely make for easier cleanup.
