Election by the numbers The divide between East and West Kootenays C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

The addition of Salmo, Nelson and Kaslo, plus their rural areas, to the Kootenay Columbia riding creates a slightly different picture in the coming election. Numbers from the 2011 election also illustrate that the divide between East and West Kootenay still remains. In 2011, the riding did not include the West Kootenay communities, and voted 55.9 per cent in favour of the Conservatives and MP David Wilks. The NDP followed with 33.8 per cent. The remaining vote was split 5.7 per cent Green, 3.3 per cent Liberal and 1.3 per cent other (there was an independent candidate in 2011). Over in the West Kootenay, the communities of Nelson, Kaslo and Salmo, and rural areas were almost a mirror image of that, with 58.5 per

cent support for the NDP and 30 per cent for the Conservatives. Both areas had identical voter turnout at 61 per cent. The addition of the West Kootenay communities adds 18,000 plus potential voters to Kootenay Columbia. In the 2011 election there were just over 60,000 potential voters in the riding. Taking a closer look at the 2011 results, one can see that Conservative support is generally strongest in the south — Sparwood voted 75 per cent Conservative, Elkford - 69.9, and Fernie rural 72.4 per cent in favour of the Conservatives. At the northwest of the riding, in Revelstoke, Conservative support was 40.9 per cent, with 43.4 per cent voting NDP. Revelstoke also had the highest Liberal support at 5.5 per cent, and Green support at 8.2 per cent. Kimberley voted 44.8 per cent Conservative, but the surrounding rural area voted 61.1 per cent for the Conservatives. In Cranbrook, Conservative support was at 61.4 per cent and Cranbrook rural at 66 per cent.

Man in a coma discovered in Invermere, now identified NICOLE TRIGG Columbia Valley Pioneer

During the evening hours of August 1st, an unconscious male was located on Kpokl Road in Invermere next to his mountain bike. The male was taken to Invermere Hospital then flown to Foothills hospital with serious head injuries. The evidence at the scene leads the investigators to believe

that the male was riding down a steep hill. At the bottom of the hill on a curve, the road divides into a Y intersection. The male did not negotiate a turn and ended up in a ditch filled with large rocks. A search of the scene and of the person found no identification. No missing person reports or overdue persons were received. With the assistance of the

media and social media, tips were received that resulted in a positive identification. The injured male has been identified as Jacob Daniel MacNeil, 25, of Invermere. The Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment would like to thank the media for their assistance as well as the public that took note of this story via social media and provided information.

The decommissioning of the Idlewild dam and draining of Idlewild Lake continues, with the City of Cranbrook monitoring the situation. Some residents have expressed concerns about the wildlife as the lake drains and turtles and the other water dwellers run out of areas to live in. Chris Zettel, the city’s corporate communication officer, said the engineering department is working and consulting on permits with various ministries, including what to do about the turtles and other wildlife. He said not much is happening right now, and suspects not much will change until September or October. “They are just monitoring it and it’s just sitting where it is right now,” he said.

Police warn of phone scams Never offer personal information over the telephone Bulletin staff

Cranbrook RCMP have received a very high number of reports in the last week of fraudsters posing as Canada Revenue Agency investigators. In most instances, the fraudsters are making contact via telephone and advising the victim that they are in arrears with their income tax and that they are required to immediately make payment or face arrest by the Police. The fraudsters are asking that payment be made with pre-paid Visa cards or direct deposit into a bank account. The fraudsters will typically use high pressure tactics and may call back if the intended victim hangs up on them. In some instances the fraudster has called back with 9-1-1 appearing on the victims call display. A man claiming to be a constable with the RCMP reassures the victim that the call was legitimate and that the victim needs to complete the process to avoid being

arrested. “This scam has been very prevalent in several British Columbia communities in the past several weeks” advises S/Sgt. Dubnyk. “This is not a standard operating procedure for Police and Canada Revenue Agency. The Police do not deal with income tax issues,” Dubnyk added. The Canada Revenue Agency has very specific procedures to communicate with tax payers. The CRA: NEVER requests information from a taxpayer about a passport, health card, or driver’s license. Does this sound too good to be true? Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return? Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already

has on file for me? How did the requester get my email address or telephone number? Am I confident I know who is asking for the information? Is there a reason that the CRA may be calling? From Page 1 Just before 10 a.m. Saturday, two Rossland residents, came across a man driving what they believed to be a stolen vehicle out of Christina Lake. They recognized the stolen red Suzuki Sidekick from a Facebook post they saw earlier that day, explained Sgt. Darren Oelke of the Trail and Greater District Detachment. But a chase gave way on foot when the police attempted to close in on the “car thief ” in the Centennial Trail parking lot. “One officer was injured chasing the male over a steep embankment, and the male escaped into the City of Rossland,” he said, adding that the suspect blew his flip flops off mid chase. “(Bone) then stole a child’s mountain bike and tried to make his escape down the Rossland hill.” Police caught up with him near Warfield and followed him into Trail, where he refused to give up, ditched the stolen

He was arrested early Sunday morning, without incident, when the cops were tipped of his whereabouts. “Communities in the Kootenay Boundary, especially Beaver Valley and Fruitvale, have seen a dramatic increase in property-related offences, especially theft of vehicles over the last few weeks,” said Oelke. “Police are confident with Clayton Bone in custody the property crimes will decrease.” The latest thefts took place in the Rossland area and included a Honda Civic, which was later found crashed by Seven Summits trail, and a Honda CRV that is still missing. “We think he’s responsible for the vast majority, maybe with a couple little helpers, but we’re thinking he is our primary fellow,” added Oelke.

August events with the Summer Reading Club C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

The Kimberley Public Library has some exciting events coming up this August for those looking to beat the heat, or perhaps find something to do with the kids while summer vacation continues. Next Tuesday and Wednesday, August 11 and 12, the Library is hosting a Creating With Clay workshop. The sessions are ages 5 and up on Tuesday and from ages from 1112 on Wednesday. Call or stop by the library to register your child. There are a limited amount of spaces for this workshop. The Library will also be showing the moving Wall.E on Friday, August 14 at 4 p.m. WALL-E, short for

Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class, is the last robot left on Earth. He spends his days tidying up the planet, one piece of garbage at a time. But during 700 years, WALL-E has developed a personality, and he’s more than a little lonely. Then he spots EVE, a sleek and shapely probe sent back to Earth on a scanning mission. Smitten WALL-E embarks on his greatest adventure yet when he follows EVE across the galaxy. The Library asks that children under 8 be accompanied by an adult. These events are part of the 2015 Summer Reading Club at the Kimberley Public Library which has been running since July 7th and the last session will end near the end of August.

SPCA tackling feral cat overpopulation Tre vor Crawley

Looking around Cranbrook, you might not think there is a major feral cat problem. But there is, according to the B.C. SPCA East Kootenay branch. Feral cats are different from your regular housebound feline as they are born ‘in the wild’ and are not domesticated or habituated to human contact. What makes it problematic is the population—or overpopulation—of feral cats in the community, according to Brenna Baker, the SPCA EK branch manager. “It is quite high for our population in the City of Cranbrook, there are a lot of feral cats. some of them are looked after by people who feed them and other ones are just free roaming and kind of fending for themselves,” Baker said. “There are cat colonies, which means there are groups of cats living together and it’s and they’re wild. “…There’s the odd domesticated cat in those colonies, but there are very few and what’s

The SPCA hopes to trap and neuter some of Cranbrook’s feral cats. happening is they keep breeding and reproducing and it’s getting out of control. It does cause a a nuisance for people when they’re not managed properly.” The SPCA recently received an $84,000 grant for spaying and neutering and are hoping to tackle some of the feral cat colonies. They are implementing a TNR—Trap, Neuter, Return—program as funding allows as a way for population control. Baker says that if

feral cats are removed or euthanized, more will always come as cats can have up to three litters a year. “I know a lot of people think that if you just get rid of these feral cats, that would solve the problem, but it would actually make it worse,” she said. Baker said she is aware of four colonies in Cranbrook, but knows there are probably more. Even though feral cats are undomesticated, sometimes there is a

human caretaker for the colonies who feed them and take care of them. “I visited a colony last night and it’s very well looked after, they have not been able to spay and neuter because it’s expensive and they’re not their cats, they’re un-owned cats, but they’re looking after the colony and the cats look really healthy. We’re going to go in and spay and neuter them because they just keep having kittens,” said Baker.

“…There is one colony that we’ve’ started to do TNR on and it’s in the yard of a business, so the caretaker noticed that one cat was sick, so we ended up trapping that one and getting it to the vet, just to make sure it wasn’t something that was going to spread through and get into people-owned cats and get them sick.” Because the cats are undomesticated and raised in the wild, the SPCA shelter can’t take them in because they can’t handle cages and kennels, said Baker. “They are completely wild and will bite and scratch and they are dangerous, some of them,” said Baker. “A lot of the feral colonies, they’ve been born into that, they’ve never been in human contact. If you put them in a kennel or a cage, they go absolutely ballistic. “We’ve had cats that try so desperately to get out that they can rip their teeth out, or their claws out. And if they get out, and get into this building, it’s absolutely crazy.” Some municipalities have passed spay and neuter bylaws that help with cat over populations, which, in addition to overpopulation, also cuts down on cases of feline aggression and hostility. When colonies have been treated with TNR, the vets snip the tip of a cat’s ear, while it is still sedated, as a visual indicator of whether a cat has been spayed or neutered. However, Baker urges the public to call the shelter if they notice any feral cats or a feral cat colony, which set up shop in places like abandoned houses or sheds. “If you come across any, call the shelter and then we can look into it and see what’s going on. I think people really need to understand that by just removing the cats or euthanizing them is not going to solve the problem,” she said. Out of Touch

Stephen Harper dropped the electoral writ on August 2nd, but left election day on October 19th, creating, at 11 weeks, the longest electoral campaign since 1872. This may be a clever strategic move, but it is not a good move for either democratic or financial responsibility. Indeed, it is an abuse of power. The long campaign enables the Conservatives to outspend their competitors and they have more money than the other parties, combined. Estimates of the total election costs range between $50 million and $75 million. A normal 4 week campaign would have kept those costs in check and would have considerably reduced the amount to be paid by the taxpayers. Moreover, the Harper government has been shovelling billions of our tax dollars out the door in strategic efforts to buy votes from target groups. The so-called Universal Child Care Benefit is only the most obvious of these. And it is also taxable. Are we so naïve as to be bought with our own money? Mr. Harper is out of touch with the reality that many Canadians face each and every day. Our economy is on the brink of

I

a recession. Industrial and resource industry jobs are vanishing or moving to other countries. We are experiencing severe climate changes and the environment is suffering. In northern and Aboriginal Canada, people continue to live with inadequate housing, educational and medical facilities and affordable food and clean water. According to economist Jim Stanford, under the Harper Conservatives Canada has produced its worst economic record since the Second World War. In response to these concerns, I can almost hear Stephen saying “Let them eat cake”. Time for the electoral guillotine if we are to salvage a measure of democracy and what remains of the Canadian economy. Shirley Green Cranbrook

Sun Mine Tour

I am writing this letter to send a big thank you to the two guides who operated the Sun Mine Tour in Kimberley on the 1 p.m., August 3rd tour. My husband, a 40+ year Industrial Electrician with Cominco, was keen to see the

Solar panels up close and personal as he had been following the procedure from the Jim Ogilvie Way view for the past year. When we arrived for the tour, I was expecting a bus similar to the community bus used in Kimberley. However, it seemed to me he would be unable to “climb” on the bus provided. I went over to tell the guide that we would not be taking the tour for this reason. He said we will get him on! They did; which made John one happy camper. When we arrived at the centre for a closer view and a short lecture of the facility and future expectations, one of the guides moved the bus so that John was able to see the panels clearly! How wonderful was this! He then climbed back on the bus and told John exactly what the other guide was saying to the group outside. At one point John did not hear clearly what he said so I repeated what I thought he said but John quickly corrected that I had the ac/dc wrong! I guess, once an electrician always an electrician! Thanks again Gentlemen! You made MY 85 year old master electrician one happy camper! When he said it was a great informative tour it must have been. Eileen Wasilciw Kimberley

Reflections on a Road Trip

recently took a vacation, spending 17 days on a road trip. I travelled about 7,200 km through the northwest quarter of the USA, and had an absolutely amazing time. I won’t subject you to a travelogue in this column (a newspaper equivalent to an endless night with a slide show) … but I do want to reflect a little on my experiences on this road trip. The first thing is that I saw some amazing things. I tend not to differentiate between the wonders of natural scenery and those captivating things which human beings have created. Both are quite engaging. The wonders of nature can take my breath away. The wonders of those things that the human mind has conceived, and human hands have designed and built also have the power to make me stop in delight and awe. I drove among (and through!) giant redwoods in northern California which made me feel infinitesimally small. These towering stands of evergreens reminded me once more that in the grand scheme of things, we humans are such latecomers on the evolutionary timeline and such tiny parts of the natural order. We are interconnected with all of life in a web of common purpose, and we only harm ourselves if we forget that fact. The power of life is strong as it reaches to the sun for light and warmth. It is a power that needs to be honoured. I marveled as sea waves pounded the rocks along the Oregon coast. Pods of whales played in the distance as a group of us ooohed and aaahed in delight. I passed through huge swaths of grasslands, golden heads waving in the wind as far as the eye could see. In every case, sequoia and sea

and grassland took no notice of me. I was a wisp in the air, a fleeting fellow–traveler, a wisp which is gone in a moment. I also visited the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, delighting in the architecture, the layout and the architecture of Temple Square. I stumbled across the Tabernacle Choir rehearsing, and stayed as the organist practiced, seemingly unaware of his audience who listened in rapt attention. Voices and fingers blessed with creativiRev. Yme ty to make such divine Woensdregt sounds also surely make the web of life richer and fuller. I smiled when I learned that the whole city is laid out in relation to Temple Square. Without doubt and unapologetically, this is the centre of the city. I also saw a land devoid of life, intensely bare and barren as I travelled beside the Great Salt Lake. It stands as a monument to the power of nature to destroy as well as to give life. It came as no surprise to learn at the Interpretive Centre that when the first European settlers stumbled across this Lake, one of their first concerns was to discover how they might use the resource. It seems to be such a natural impulse on our part to wonder how can we commodify the natural world. How can we use it? What benefit can we imagine that this might be for us? They discovered that the Great Salt Lake could not be tamed for their purposes. Nature doesn’t exist to meet our needs. Rather, it’s our purpose to take care together of this incredible web of life in which we live together. Even so, the scale of the work of art known as Mount Rushmore took my breath away. You don’t need to be an

American to be moved by the incredible achievement of this monumental sculpture. I stayed away from the Interstates, and was delighted to travel through innumerable small towns, most of which I have already forgotten. The one thing that stuck with me, however, was that each town would list not only its name, but also its population and its elevation. So I passed through Cromberg, California, and noticed a small square of fresh paint on the sign which listed the population at 268. It was a brand new number, and I thought that often it is only in smaller communities that each person is counted and each person counts. When I talk about Cranbrook, I say that there are about 20,000 people here. Or I mention that I grew up in Surrey, which is now part of a major metropolitan area with millions of people. But Cromberg knows that there are 268 people there; the number is updated to take account of births and deaths. In a society where we think that “bigger is better” Cromberg and all its cousins remind us that it ain’t necessarily so. I also love finding road signs that make me laugh. This trip, I saw a sign that read in big white letters on a green background, “Independence” … followed 250 metres later by “Prison Zone. No hitch hiking allowed.” The irony made me laugh out loud. Finally, a friend sent me a card, “We usually associate the colours red, white and blue with freedom and liberty … until we see them flashing in our rearview mirror!” I’m delighted to say that I never saw any freedom lights in my mirrors. Blackmore big winner in childcare payout

T

here may have been no bigger winner than polygamist Winston Blackmore last month when the Canadian government sent out cheques for the expanded Universal Child Care Benefit. Blackmore, who is awaiting trial on a single criminal charge of polygamy, has 133 children ranging in age from babies to adults. For every child under the age of six, Canadian parents received $520, and for every child aged seven to 18, they received $420, with no restrictions on how the money could be spent. Using the best information available from several sources, the 58-year-old fundamentalist Mormon leader has as many as 98 children who are 18 or younger, and as many as 20 of those are seven and younger. What makes it easier to determine the Blackmore children’s ages is that his offspring were often given names that started with a specific letter of the alphabet depending on which year they were born. There was the year when most (if not all) had names starting with O. Other years, there were the Rs, the Ms, the Ns, the Ps, followed by the As, then the Ws (although, surprisingly, no Winston), the Ss and the Hs. Do the arithmetic of 20 children under seven and 78 between the ages of seven and 18 and it adds up to a $43,160 payday for Blackmore and his wives. Of course, the childcare benefit is taxable.

But the Conservative government have also introduced income splitting for families. Even for conventional families with only two parents, it is difficult to estimate the dollar value of that benefit. But there is no reason to believe that Blackmore would not be able to take full advantage of sharing the tax burden among his wives. And heaven knows, Blackmore has no shortage of wives. There were 24 listed on Blackmore’s indictDaphne ment on the polygamy charge. Bramham All of which could add up to another big mess for the folks at the Canada Revenue Agency to sort out the hows and whatifs of income-splitting in this family. It was only last September that the Federal Court of Appeal finally ended Blackmore’s long-running tax case. The unanimous decision was that Blackmore had understated his income by approximately $1.8 million over a six-year period that began in 2000. In one year alone, a Federal Tax Court judge said Blackmore understated his income and benefits by an “astronomical” 1,326 per cent. Both the tax court and the appeal court rejected Blackmore’s contention that he and his congregation of close to 500 people (mostly family) were eligible to be taxed as a commune. On Aug. 20, Blackmore will be back in B.C. Provincial Court in Creston to fix a date for his criminal trial on a single count of polygamy. Blackmore has attempted to have

the charge quashed on the basis that the special prosecutor had been improperly appointed, a claim rejected by a B.C. Supreme Court judge in June. Another former bishop of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, James Oler, will also be in Provincial Court in Creston on Aug. 20. He is charged with one count of polygamy, with four wives named on the indictment, as well as one count of transporting a child under the age of 16, a daughter, for an illegal purpose — a religious marriage in the United States. Blackmore’s brother, Brandon, will be in B.C. Supreme Court in Cranbrook on Aug. 13. Brandon Blackmore and one of his wives, Emily Crossfield, are also charged with transporting one of their under-aged daughters to the U.S. to be married. It is almost certain that the Conservatives would not have even thought of polygamous families before they made the $3-billion, “family-friendly” childcare announcement last month. They did, after all, make child trafficking a criminal offence and increase the penalties. But the Conservatives (like most other politicians) have been less clear on where they stand on religious-based polygamy. Because opposing it means accepting the B.C. Supreme Court’s conclusion that even religious freedom has its limits — a conclusion that at least some voters might find hard to accept. Daphne Bramham is a columnist with the Vancouver Sun

ZURICH - World Cup winner Germany dropped to No. 3 in the latest FIFA rankings, with beaten finalist Argentina still at No. 1. Germany trades places with new No. 2 Belgium as its World Cup results drop in value more than one year later. The Netherlands fell seven places to No. 12, also because its third-place finish in Brazil counts for less in FIFA’s calculations over a four-year cycle. Colombia stays at No. 4, and Brazil and Portugal each rise one to Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Copa America winner Chile climbs one to No. 10. Mexico used its Gold Cup title to rise 14 places to No. 26. Runner-up Jamaica is up 21 to No. 55. The United States, beaten by Jamaica in the semifinals, improves five places to No. 29. Canada rises two places to 101st after posting two draws and a loss at the Gold Cup.

CFL combats violence against women with new initiative Canadian Press

VANCOUVER - Players and employees of the CFL will undergo yearly mandatory training on violence against women as part of a new league initiative. The CFL unveiled its policy on violence against women today, with an emphasis on preventing violence from occurring in the first place and acting quickly when it does happen. The policy was developed in partnership with the Ending Violence Association of Canada, following consultations with multiple women who are experts in the field of responding to violence against women. The league says it will also participate in efforts to increase awareness of violence against women and ways to prevent it throughout society, in particular among youth. CFL commissioner Jeffrey Orridge says the league will work to ensure that all of its workplaces are safe from violence against women.

NFL partners with CFL for concussion testing during Canadian games Associated Press

NEW YORK - The NFL and CFL are partnering on concussion testing during Canadian league games and practices this season. The leagues announced the agreement Thursday. During CFL training camp and regular-season games that began in June, team medical staffs have been using a remove-from-play sideline concussion screening test based on eye movement. It is being used in addition to the CFL’s established sideline concussion examination, and the NFL will contribute funding to help determine whether the tests improve the ability to diagnose concussions. Called the K-D Test, it’s a two-minute exam. An athlete reads single-digit numbers displayed on cards or on a tablet to test eye movement. After suspected head trauma, the athlete is given the test and response time is compared to his preseason baseline time. This information, as well as a full medical evaluation, will help diagnose a concussion and subsequently remove a player from play, the leagues said.

Canada fielding largest-ever Parapan Am squad in hopes of top-3 finish Lori E wing Canadian Press

TORONTO — Canada is gunning for a top-three spot in the medals table at the Parapan Am Games, which open Friday, and like its Canadian Pan Am predecessor, is fielding its biggest team ever - 216 athletes. At the Parapan Ams four years ago in Guadalajara, Mexico, Canada finished eighth in gold medals, and fifth in overall medals. Brazil dominated the Games, winning 197 total medals - 81 gold, 61 silver, and 55 bronze - and a year out from hosting

the Rio Paralympics, will be a force to contend with in Toronto. The United States won 132 medals (51-47-34) in Mexico, while the host country finished with 165 (50-60-55). Canada brought home 63 medals from Guadalajara - 13 gold, 22 silver and 28 bronze. Boccia player Marco Dispaltro will carry Canada’s flag into the opening ceremonies Friday at the new athletics stadium at York University. These are the largest Parapan Am Games in history, with 1,600 athletes from North, Central and South

America participating. Elisabeth Walker-Young,a four-time Paralympian in swimming who is Canada’s chef de mission, said Canada will be strong in what she called the country’s legacy sports: men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Fifteen sports will be contested: archery, athletics, boccia, cycling, five-a-side football, seven-a-side football, goalball, judo, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis. All are

qualifiers for next summer’s Paralympics. “There’s a lot at stake,” said Catherine Gosselin-Depres, the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s executive director of sport. “For the first time the Parapan Ams are direct qualifiers in every sport for the upcoming Paralympic Games in Rio. In many cases, you will have to win here just to get to Brazil.” At the Pan Ams that wrapped up almost two weeks ago, Canada finished second in medals, with 217 - 78 gold, 69 silver, and 70 bronze.

The B.C. health ministry is adding an extra $2 million to improve security at four facilities identified as having the highest risk for violence. Extra staff, new alarms and violence prevention training will be among strategies for Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Port Coquitlam, Hillside Centre in Kamloops, Seven Oaks Tertiary Mental Health in Victoria and Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Health Minister Terry Lake announced the extra funding Thursday with B.C. Nurses’ Union president Gayle Duteil. Eight more health facilities have been identified as priorities for additional help, and more are expected

Province asks residents to lower water use as drought rating rises

C a n a d ia n Press

VANCOUVER - British Columbia residents are once again being asked to curb their water use as drought conditions persist throughout the province. The Forests Ministry has raised the drought rating to Level 4 in the Okanagan region, signalling extremely dry conditions that could lead to water shortages. The north Thompson region has had its rating raised to Level 3. Fishing has also been banned along the main stem of the Okanagan River between Okanagan Lake and Osooyos Lake to protect fish stocks amid low stream flows and high temperatures. Drought ratings for the south Thompson, Similkameen, Kettle and Skagit areas were all raised to Level 4 on July 27. Municipalities throughout the province have put water restrictions into effect, including in Metro Vancouver, where residents can be fined $250 for watering their lawns or hand washing their cars. to be identified this fall, Lake said. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You will be more detail-oriented than you have been in a while. Try not to become too serious-minded. Know that the differences between you and someone else can be an asset. Maintain an upbeat attitude. Tonight: Treat a friend. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You have a lot to do before you can really kick into weekend mode. Recognize that a loved one might be in a gloomy mood. The good news is that this period won’t last long. Use it to reconnect on a different level. Tonight: All smiles. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You will want to review a recent action that might not have gone the way you wanted. By pulling apart the matter with a trusted adviser, you will see what went wrong. Tonight: Know when to call it a night. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Your friends often come to

you for advice. You’ll discover how different people are and how their perspectives are also diverse. Learning to work with others quickly will evolve into a new skill. Tonight: Where your friends are. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You could see a matter from a very different perspective than the majority of people. Maintain a sense of humor when dealing with an important person. Avoid someone who seems to carry a lot of baggage. Tonight: A force to be dealt with. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You have a way of drawing others toward you. Your intellect mixed with your precision form an impressive combo. Know when to let down your barriers and add more humor and fun into a situation. Tonight: Go stargazing with a friend. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) One-on-one relating allows you to be more flexible and forthright. Listen to your inner voice when making a relation-

ship decision. Sometimes you put up barriers when they are not needed. Tonight: Enjoy the person you are with. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Allow yourself more flexibility. You might feel the need to be in control; however, letting go might be the best way today. Let others believe that they are maintaining the reins of control. Tonight: Listen to someone else’s thoughts. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your perspective improves, as does your ability to detach. You might be overwhelmed by how differently problems look after an important realization. Curb an innate urge to be negative. Tonight: Take off as soon as you can. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You know what you would like to happen, but convincing another person to be party to this matter could be another issue entirely. Maintain a sense of humor. Avoid an unneeded quarrel. Tonight: Make the most of the weekend!

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Others seem to dominate, and your voice nearly might be drowned out. Turn this situation into a positive one and take off for a weekend away. You have been carrying a heavy burden, and you need a break. Tonight: Make a must appearance. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You have a lot to communicate, but you can’t seem to get past a problem. Touching base with someone at a distance might be difficult. Remain optimistic, even when you hit an obstacle. Just head in a new direction. Tonight: Say “yes.” BORN TODAY Actor David Duchovny (1960), actress Charlize Theron (1975), musician Bruce Dickinson (1958) *** Jacqueline Bigar is on the Internet at www.jacquelinebigar.com. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: About three years ago, I did something very stupid. I looked at a solar eclipse. I thought it would last only a minute and, not wanting to miss it, I ran outside and squinted at it through my sunglasses. I fully acknowledge that I can only blame myself for that. The next days and weeks were some of the scariest of my life. My vision became blurry and I had a hard time focusing. I feared that I might not recover my sight and that my center of vision might always be skewed because I had looked directly at the sun. Thankfully, my vision gradually recovered. But one thing about this episode has left me deeply troubled. When I thought I would be permanently blinded, I needed love and support. However, my mother quickly became convinced that I was faking it. She insisted that none of it was real, it was all in my head and I was just imagining everything. It was frustrating and confusing. Why would she deny that I was having a medical problem? Why would she take a position that could only hurt our relationship? Last week, during an eye exam, the doctor noticed a spot and diagnosed me with a textbook case of solar maculopathy. I passed this confirmation along to my mother, but even now, she won’t acknowledge how wrong, and in some ways cruel, her denial and indifference were. In my right eye, I have a dark spot that follows wherever I look. I’ve grown used to it, but it is a constant reminder of this troubling episode. Am I wrong to continue feeling hurt? Or does this reveal something about our relationship and her moral character? -- S. Dear S.: Denial is a very powerful emotion. It allows someone like your mother to refuse to believe that you have a serious problem [1]and what it could mean to your future. She needed comfort, too, and this is where she found it. Is Mom’s behavior toward you otherwise close and loving? If so, we would put this in the past. Continuing to dwell on the hurt will only make you bitter and will alienate the two of you, which we assume is not what you want. Dear Annie: I’d like to comment further on the letter from “Shepherdsville, Ky.,” regarding poor grammar. My pet peeves are those who say “pitcher” for “picture.” In Wisconsin, numerous individuals say “youse guys” instead of “you guys” and “liberry” for “library.” And last, but not least, it irks me when my husband and I are at a restaurant and the server asks, “What can I get for you guys?” I am not a guy. I am far from perfect, and maybe a little picky, but I find these things very annoying. And I, too, feel better now after venting. -- Miss Picky in Wisconsin Dear Wisconsin: You’re welcome. We all deal with small, trivial irritations on a daily basis. Some people are more bothered by them than others, so we’re happy to help when you need to let off a little steam. Obituaries Archie Keith Carver December 26, 1947 August 2015

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our son, dad, grandpa and brother Archie Keith Carver. Archie was born on December 26, 1947 in Cranbrook. He is predeceased by his father Kenneth Carver and brother Danny Carver. Archie is survived by his mother Lois Carver, daughter Shelby Murphy, grandson Liam and granddaughter Caitlin. Brothers Brent Carver, Randy (Janine) Carver, Shawn (Alisha) Carver, sisters Sherry (Charlie) Laurie, Vicki (Don) Stanley, Frankie (Kelly) Reekie and many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Other than living in Canal Flats for a couple of years growing up Archie spent his school years in Cranbrook. His first job was as a milkman with his Uncle Ray. Archie was working in a logging camp when he was offered the opportunity of going to carpenter school. This turned out to be his lifelong journey taking him to all different parts of Canada. Working on the dome in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa as well as many other cities, but his great love of carpentry took him mostly to northern parts of BC and Alberta, always using Edmonton as his home base when not in camp. Archie loved to work and took pride in his work, once a project was started he would barely find time for sleep.

Archie respected and adored the outdoors. He was forever in awe as he hiked to the local trails and many times would explore to exhaustion. He was joyful and at peace tearing up the trails with a four-legged friend. Archie loved, loved, loved animals and they adored Archie. He was gifted with a real gentleness that drew animals to him. Archie was also a voracious reader and spent countless hours with his nose in a book. The library was a close friend. We were blessed 3 years ago when Archie decided to make Cranbrook his home again. Archie always expressed a great desire to settle down with a home he built by the water. Though West Vancouver may have been his dream Archie found his peace by coming home to Cranbrook. Archie was a gentle, generous and caring person with an undeniable sense of humor. Telling us stories of his travels and situations he seemed to always find himself in. Laughter came so easily to Archie and to all of us while listening to his tales. Please join us for a celebration of Archie’s life which will be held at the Eagles Hall in Cranbrook on Monday August 10th, 2015 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers Archie would appreciate donations to the SPCA. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Services. info@mcphersonfh.com

Top Ten Reasons to Advertise in a Newspaper 1. Advertise to Reach New Customers. Your market changes constantly. Advertising is tremendously helpful in directing customers to the product and services they need, and helps put you ahead of your competition.

2. Your Competition Isn’t Quitting. You’ve got to advertise to get your share of business or lose it to the stores that do. If you cut back on your advertising, you may forfeit new prospective customers to your competition.

3. Advantage Over Competitors Who Cut Back. A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found that advertisers who maintained or expanded advertising during a troubled economy saw sales increase an average of 100%.

4. Continuous Advertising Strengthens Your Image. When people who postpone buying come back to the marketplace, you’ve got a better chance of getting their business if you’ve continued to maintain a solid, reliable image.

5. Direct Advertising is Cost Efficient. Direct has the advantages – demographic and geographic numbers to afford advertisers the best value and exposure for their advertising dollar.

6. Advertise to Generate Traffic.

Fight Back. Volunteer your time, energy and skills today.

Continuous traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of buyers. The more people who contact you, the more possibilities you have to make sales.

7. Advertise to Make More Sales. Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You’ll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful.

8. Advertise Because There is Always Business to Generate. Salespeople are on the payroll. As long as you’re in business, you have overhead and you’ve got to advertise to generate a steady cash flow.

9. Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image. In a troubled economy, rumors and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects gossip, shoots down false reports and projects positively.

10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale. When advertising and promotion are cut, salespeople become less motivated. They may believe the store is cutting back, even going out of business.
