Neighbours irate over sex offender’s presence James Conway living in rural Bradner neighbourhood Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Kim Iverson loves her neighbourhood in the Abbotsford community of Bradner. It’s a peaceful, rural area where everyone knows each other – there are just five houses on the street – and she often has several kids playing in her yard in addition to her two children, ages four and two. Iverson feels that peace has been disrupted since convicted sexual offender James Conway recently moved onto the street. “My house always has tons of kids … It’s quite disturbing (that Conway lives there),” she said. The Abbotsford Police Department released a public notice on Aug. 1 that Conway, 40, would be moving to the community, although privacy laws prohibited them from saying exactly where. Conway has a long criminal history, including three sexual offences against children, as well as sexual interference of a person under 16, sexual assault and arson. He has also breached the conditions of his release at least twice. In April 2014, he was caught staring at young girls on SkyTrain, looking down their shirts and engaging them in conversation by producing a teddy bear. He was later sentenced to 10 months in jail and three years’ probation. Police issued a public notice about his release from prison in February of this year, when he settled in the Surrey area. At that time, BC Corrections said in a press release that he

A public notice was issued again in April, when Conway was released from prison and planned to reside in Delta. Iverson said she and her neighbours found out by word of mouth that Conway is now living on their street in a home with one other person, and they have confirmed it. She said residents in the area are livid that he has been allowed to reside there. “Nobody wants somebody like that around their children … It’s not a comfort-
able feeling knowing he’s there,” she said. Bradner resident Cherry Groves sent an email to Justice Minister Suzanne Anton, Mayor Henry Braun and Police Chief Bob Rich questioning Conway’s residency. “The area is surrounded by thick bush and trees, all the houses are on acreage and relatively isolated from each other so an intrusion into any of them would probably not be seen or heard by neighbours,” she wrote. Warning signs about Conway have been posted in the area, and residents are planning to hold a rally on Sunday, Aug. 23, with a goal of having Conway leave their neighbourhood. BC Corrections spokesperson Amy Lapsley said Conway chose to live in Abbotsford.
“There is no legal authority for the province or any law enforcement agency or public body to tell offenders in which community they can or cannot live … In many cases, offenders choose to return to the area where they were living prior to their time in custody, or to where they have family or supports and resources, such as housing, in place,” she said. Lapsley said BC Corrections’ probation officers work closely with local police and other agencies to identify support for offenders, including appropriate housing placements. She said Conway is the subject of “intensive monitoring” by Corrections and Abbotsford Police. He is under 24-hour house arrest, is on electronic monitoring, must not leave his residence at

any time without the supervision of an approved adult, and must not be near anyone under the age of 18. Any breach of those conditions could result in him returning to custody. Lapsley said the higher the risk that an offender is in a community, “the higher the focus is on their supervision.” Offenders under federal jurisdiction – those with a jail sentence of two years or longer – often reside in halfway houses upon their release. These facilities often include structured programs and are manned by trained staff, but are not available to those serving a provincial sentence, as Conway is. Micheal Vonn, policy director with the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, said the organization has concerns about public protests against offenders such as Conway, as much as they support freedom of speech. She questions what this type of “vigilante harassment” accomplishes. Having the person move on to another neighbourhood doesn’t solve the greater issue of an offender’s re-integration into society, Vonn said. “Everyone has to live somewhere,” she said, acknowledging that this is a “very unpopular view.” She said it appears that issues of public safety are being addressed by the “extremely stringent” conditions that Conway is under. – with files from the Surrey North Delta Leader

Driver plows through cemetery Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Troy was on his way home from work as a line cook at a local restaurant at about 2:30 a.m. on Monday when he spotted something unusual. He was nearing the corner of Old Yale and Marshall roads when he saw a car barreling through Musselwhite Cemetery, which doesn’t have any roads running through it. The vehicle crashed through the fence on Old Yale Road, and Troy (not his real name), worried about what the driver would do next, decided to follow. He called 911 and stayed on the phone with police as he tailed the red Hyundai Elantra. The vehicle wound its way toward Highway 1, entering at the eastbound Whatcom Road on-

At one point, Troy saw the driver run a red light on North Parallel Road, almost hitting an SUV. On the freeway, Troy observed the motorist going dangerously
slow, hitting speeds of only 50 to 70 km/h in a 110 km/h zone. The swerving vehicle was straddling both lanes of traffic, resulting in a line of about 30 cars behind it.

The driver then decided to turn around, and drove onto the grassy median dividing eastand west-bound traffic, and became stuck. Troy turned around at the next exit and arrived at the scene to see the Hyundai was still stuck, and two other vehicles had pulled over to help. Police arrived, and Troy provided a witness statement. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the motorist, who is from Saskatchewan, had driven over 11 headstones in the cemetery. He now faces possible criminal charges for mischief/ property damage. Fraser Valley Traffic Services, which handles incidents on Highway 1, issued the man an immediate 24-hour suspension for driving impaired, as well as a 90-day driving ban.

The AbbotsfordMission area’s unemployment rate reached its lowest point in more than five years this summer, according to Statistics Canada’s latest Labour Force Survey estimates. The region’s unemployment rate hit 5.4 per cent in June and held steady in July – the lowest mark since the spring of 2010. In 2010, however, the low unemployment figures were a blip, and quickly gave way to higher numbers. This year, though, measures of employment have remained strong for several months, with the unemployment rate hovering around or below the six per cent mark all year. Abbotsford-Mission unemployment figures haven’t been this consistently low since 2008, just prior to the global financial crisis. The numbers come in the face of data that suggests Canada may have entered a recession. But the AbbotsfordMission Census Metropolitan Area, on the other hand, has recorded not only a dip in the unemployment rate, but a substantial increase in the number of people looking for work. Nearly 7,000 more people are estimated to be working this summer than were employed in January. The unemployment rate is also now better than the British Columbia average. For much of 2014, the area had a significantly worse rate – as high as 8.4 per cent – than both the provincial average, and those of B.C.’s three other Census Metropolitan Areas, Kelowna, Vancouver and Victoria. In July, though, Abbotsford’s rate of 5.4 per cent was better than the provincial rate of six per cent.

Abbotsford News
An Abbotsford man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend up to 20 times in front of their 18-monthold son has been sentenced to five years in prison. Troy Alexander Perrin, 26, previously pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in relation to a violent incident that occurred in April 2014 at a home on Blackham Drive. Perrin, sentenced last Thursday in Abbotsford provincial court, was given two years’ credit for the time he has served in prison since the attack, leaving him with an additional three years of jail time. The court heard that Perrin and the victim had been in an on-off relationship for seven years and had one child together. At the time of the attack, the pair were separated, and Perrin was under court orders not to have any contact with the woman. During Perrin’s sentencing hearing, Crown lawyer Corinne Schmidt detailed the assault. At about 8 a.m. on April 14, 2014, the woman left her baby in another room while she went to have a bath. She heard the front door open, got out of the tub and walked into the room, where she saw Perrin, who immediately attacked her without saying a word. The victim felt what she thought were punches on both sides of her torso, but she then realized she was being stabbed. “Stop! Don’t!” the woman screamed at Perrin several times. Schmidt said Perrin continued to stab the woman 15 to 20 times, striking her in the torso, head, face and hands. He didn’t say a word during the entire assault, Schmidt said. The victim tried to escape several times, and was finally able to lock herself in the bathroom

He was found with the baby in the backyard of a nearby residence. The six-inch steak knife that had been used in the assault was found on the property. The victim, who lost almost a litre of blood, was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital, where she was treated for serious injuries, in-
cluding a collapsed lung, a severed nerve on the left side of her face and about 20 wounds that required suturing. Schmidt said the woman still has nerve damage on her face but has, for the most part, recovered both physically and emotionally. Schmidt said that at the time of the attack, Perrin had been smoking and snorting crystal meth and had not slept for nine days. Defence laywer Darrel
Schultz said Perrin has a history of drug use and mental health issues, and was “psychotic and delusional” during much of his time in prison since his arrest. However, Schultz said Perrin has recently been prescribed new medication that has resulted in a “remarkable change” in his behaviour, including him wanting to take responsibility for the attack. Schultz said Perrin is

What to do with offender?
This month, a small neighbourhood in Bradner got a new resident – a very unwelcome one. James Conway, a convicted sex offender, had just moved from Delta, and police issued a public warning that he was now in Abbotsford. It’s easy and entirely understandable that many people simply say, “Not here!” But if not here, then where? No community wants a sex offender in its midst, particularly one that has a history of targeting children, and especially one who has previously breached his court-ordered conditions. So, what to do with these individuals? Certainly, changes in the justice and corrections system are badly needed. The widespread concern among locals reveals a lack of confidence in the way our system handles such offenders – and for good reason. Conway’s repeated violations of the conditions of his release call into question the efficacy of penalties for those who break
the rules imposed on them when they are permitted to live in the community. Twice in the space of a year, Conway breached his conditions. And yet, he is again out of prison. One does not have be a law-and-order type to see the reasons for extreme anxiety on the part of his new neighbours. It’s somewhat reassuring to know that Conway will be under electronic monitoring and have to abide by strict conditions, including having to be accompanied by an approved adult when leaving his home. But deeper thought needs to be given about the neighbourhoods sex offenders are allowed to move into. Some may feel that a rural area is a good place for such an individual. However, residents there rightly fear their children become higher profile targets, and there are fewer eyes to see trouble if it occurs. The concept of reintegration into society needs to be examined. Clearly, this tenet of social engineering is not in sync with widespread public perception and opinion.
There’s no love in this lawn affair Andrew
Holota
On Point Judging from the proliferation of brown lawns around this city, it seems most folks get the water conservation measure – other than a handful of gotta-be-green fanatics. As I observed in a column about a decade ago, some folks really do have a love affair with their lawns. I do not. Our relationship would better be described as a cold arranged marriage. I didn’t ask for my lawn. It came with the house, as most do. It’s not that I dislike lawns. It’s just that it has all the standard annoying lawn characteristics. During the rainy seasons, i.e. most of the year, it grows faster than credit card debt. It has serious moss issues, which isn’t an issue at present, because everything is dead – except the couch grass, which I’m sure could grow on the moon. In fact, that
would be a fine place for it, rather than infesting my lawn. I’m one of those people who, having done something, likes it to stay done. Lawns are never done. For someone who treasures his free time, the lawn is a major nuisance. I must acknowledge that my wife does most of the mowing, since I do the cooking. However, all other lawn and garden maintenance falls to me. It would be better if I had inherited my father’s love of nurturing all things green. I swear he knew exactly how many blades of grass he had, and monitored their individual states of being. And he guarded his greenery with ferocious determination. Dandelions did not have a chance on his property. Couch grass didn’t even dare to encroach on his lawn. It would have been terminated with extreme prejudice. Mole hills were an unspeakable offence against all that was right and proper. He used to sit outside for hours, shotgun in his lap, waiting for the lawn-defacing little buggers to starting pushing up another mound, and Boom! (There were some things you could do on
a farm that just would not have been acceptable in suburban surroundings.) Eventually, a move to a more closely populated setting ruled out artillery, so he switched to hunting moles with a garden hose. That was rather ironic, since I never saw
For someone who treasures his free time, the lawn is a major nuisance. him water his lawn, bless his sensible soul. Being on well water dictated a conservative and practical approach to water use. It was a self-imposed ban on sprinkling – city regulations unrequired. Actually, I’m rather pleased about those. We bought a home in a neighbourhood with a lot of very good-looking lawns. Many of them are pampered by professional lawn care service providers. It means I have to care about my lawn more than ever before. And if there weren’t city regulations
banning lawn sprinkling, it would mean I would be the only guy on the block with a lawn in desert camouflage. Either that, or I would be feeling extremely guilty about wasting water to keep up with the Joneses. However, I am happy to say my neighbours also have lawns that look as though they were imported from Sudan. Until fall, that is. Then they’ll all be back to fastidious trimming, and fertilizing and declaring war on every species of green growing things that are not in the Kentucky Blue gene pool. And, alas, so will I. In the early 2000s, someone wrote a book called How To Get Your Lawn Off Grass. It suggests there are many ways to dress up the property surrounding your house without committing to the lawn love affair. There are all sorts of attractive plants that don’t mind dry conditions, and they stay short without having to be mechanically decapitated every five days. Or how about rocks? You don’t have to mow rocks or water them. And they look good with moss. I wonder what the neighbours would think if I converted my lawn into riverbed.

Irresponsible decision
Quite an uproar has developed this past week in north Bradner where James Conway is in residence. Why weren’t any of the neighbours informed by the authorities of this placement? Why is a three-time convicted pedophile, as well as being a convicted arsonist, in residence on a small street that has four families with young daughters and/or granddaughters? One is of pre-school age and lives directly across the road. This is an incredibly, irresponsible decision and an egregious lack of judgment. If anything goes wrong the nearest police presence is 20 minutes away at best. It’s not unknown for electronic monitors to be removed. The area is surrounded by thick bush and trees, all the houses are on acreage and relatively isolated from each other so an intrusion into any one of them would probably not be seen or heard by neighbours. Mayor Hepner had plenty to say against his placement in Surrey. He’s a repeat convicted pedophile, he should be in prison, not living in a neighborhood with young children. Neighbours are irate and want him gone. It’s an outrageously, ill-conceived situation and needs immediate intervention. Matt and Cherry Groves Bradner

Turned off by attack ads
For the past few weeks, we have been inundated with a Conservative Party advertisement that personally attacks Justin Trudeau and now Thomas Mulcair. These negative ads have led me to change my vote for incumbent MP Ed Fast, whom I have had the pleasure of knowing for over 20 years. While he is not responsible for these ads, his party is, and it is not the kind of advertising that I feel that he would endorse. Sorry Ed, you had my vote, but your party has lost it for me.

Anti-violence measures increased at hospitals Abbotsford among four facilities to get extra security

The B.C. health ministry is adding an extra $2 million to improve security at four facilities identified as having the highest risk for violence. Extra staff, new alarms and violence prevention training will be among strategies for Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Port Coquitlam, Hillside Centre in Kamloops, Seven Oaks Tertiary Mental Health in Victoria and Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Health Minister Terry Lake announced the extra funding Thursday with B.C. Nurses’ Union president Gayle Duteil. Eight more health facilities have been identified as priorities for additional help, and more are expected to be identified this fall, Lake said. Duteil said increased staffing around the clock at Hillside psychiatric hospital mean that nurses will no longer have to work alone. She said violence is a risk for all health care facilities in the province, including residential care. “Health care workers as a whole receive the highest number of WorkSafeBC injury claims for violence-related injuries across this province,” Duteil said. “They actually have more injuries than police officers related to violence.” Duteil said a nurse at the Abbotsford emergency room has not returned to work after an assault in March left him with stitches to his face. Fraser Health reported that there were three security guards on duty at the time who responded immediately to what police described as a sudden, unprovoked attack by a 23-year-old man. Lake said the ministry committed $37 million to violence education in 2011. Since then the annual total of “Code White” violence incidents has declined from 4,300 a year to 3,700.

Bacon trial postponed Seven years after Surrey Six arrest
Kevin DIAKIW Black Press
The trial for Jamie Bacon has been postponed for more than a year due to a lengthy pre-trial process. Bacon, on trial in relation to the Surrey
Six slayings in October 2007, was due to be in court on Sept. 2 on one count of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The so-called Surrey Six slayings at Balmoral Tower in Whalley left
six dead, including two innocent bystanders – Chris Mohan of Surrey and Ed Schelleberg of Abbotsford. On July 28, the trial was put forward to Oct. 31, 2016 – seven years after Bacon was arrest-

ed in connection with the crime. “A number of factors (caused the postponement), but that included that there’s additional time that’s expected to be needed to deal with some additional pre-trial applications as well as dealing with issues arising from disclosure by Crown of some privileged material,” said Neil MacKenzie, spokesman for the provincial criminal justice branch. A ban on publication is in place on any of the pre-trial motions that are causing the delays. The trial itself is expected to last for six to nine months. To this point, four people have been convicted, or have pleaded guilty, to a role in the murders of Corey Lal, his brother Michael, associates Ryan Bartolomeo and Eddie Narong, and Schellenberg and Mohan. Last December, Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston were sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of six counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy. They are appealing their convictions. In 2013, Michael Le pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and was sentenced to 12 years. One person, who can only be identified as Person X by court order, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2009 for three of the murders and was sentenced to life with no parole for 15 years. The lengthy wait for trial isn’t likely to benefit Bacon. In non-murder trials, time in custody prior to trial often counts as double time when sentencing is given, if the offence occurred before October 2009. (For offences aftter that date, credit time is now 1.5 days for every day of pre-trial custody.) However, that’s not the case in murder trials. Typically, time served will come off the time required for parole eligibility. For murder charges, time spent in jail prior to a conviction is counted as straight time.

Use of groundwater saves trout Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
Fish at the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery have escaped the effects of warm weather that killed thousands of trout at a Bellingham facility last month. Nearly all the trout at a hatchery in Whatcom Falls Park died in two separate events in July, the Bellingham Herald reported last week. Around 5,400 rainbow trout destined for local fishing lakes died, with only “a couple hundred surviving. High water temperatures were blamed for the die-off at the hatchery, which uses water from the shallow part of a nearby lake. Despite similarly high temperatures in Abbotsford, the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery’s Dean Worrall said trout at the local facility have escaped harm because it relies on groundwater. “We’re faring OK, he said, because the water at the hatchery comes from an aquifer and remains
at a constant temperature throughout the year. Hatchery workers had to stop stocking lakes sooner than usual out of concerns that the shock of going from the hatchery’s cold water to a warm lake would kill the trout. “Usually we do OK with temperatures until the end of June, but this year by the end of May we were running into very high temperatures, especially in some of our local lakes, Worrall said. “We were running into water temperatures that were 25 degrees. While Worrall said water temperatures that exceed 22 degrees can kill trout, he said those places where fish were stocked have been “reporting OK. That’s not the only problem posed by the high river temperatures. In early summer, the hatchery usually transfers steelhead and cutthroat trout to other facilities where they can grow larger before being released. This year, higher temperatures at those riverfed facilities have halted those transfers.

Public wants vibrant UDistrict
Transportation among the challenges facing planners Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
Arts and entertainment venues and public gathering places were priorities for those who attended a public consultation for the UDistrict Project that
aims to build a vibrant neighbourhood around the University of the Fraser Valley. The project, which is a collaboration between the City of Abbotsford and UFV, formally began in the spring with a public event. The plan has
• Lingerie • Body Stockings • Massage Oils and Lotions • Adult Toys/ Novelties • 100s of DVDs • Trade-ins on DVDs • Adult Books & Magazines • Large Selection of Men’s Toys • Stag & Stagettes Gifts & Party Favours • Assorted E-Cig Flavour Refills

now moved into its second “choices and direction” stage, with planners releasing a 76-page report this week. The hope is to present preferred concepts to city council and the UFV Board of Governors in December, with an eye towards a final public hearing and approval by April of 2016. The report suggests that the UDistrict – a 365-acre plot of land that includes the university and surrounding land – could see its population grow from 3,200 people to around 5,650 people by 2040, with the area also becoming a commercial and research and development hub. At the April consultation event the public expressed hope for a “walkable, mixed-use and complete community” where people can “live, work, shop and play.” But making those dreams come true will require planners to overcome some challenges. The report notes that the area’s current

structure, with large block sizes and limited street-fronting buildings “does not encourage walking.” The report recommends further developing east-west street corridors between McCallum and McKenzie roads and making King Road more pedestrian-friendly, with wider sidewalks and street parking. The report also recommends a better connection across the highway to allow cyclists to avoid the McCallum Road roundabout. The report also noted that many UFV students and staff don’t have a direct bus they can take to the campus. The UDistrict is the city’s first neighbourhood plan. The report notes that the area has 265 acres of re-developable land, although it does not detail locations. The report does note that “the greatest opportunity for integrating the campus with the community exists within the northern portion of the campus lands adjacent to the city.” Another public event is expected in October to solicit more feedback on concepts for the neighbourhood’s design. A new recipe book on vegetarian cooking will be launched in Abbotsford on Thursday, Aug. 20. The launch event for Vegetarian Comfort Foods runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at Wildflower Artisan Collective, 33821 South Fraser Way. Author Jennifer Browne of Abbotsford will be in attendance. All of the photos were taken by Tanya Loewen, also of Abbotsford. The book was published by Skyhorse Publishing of New York. Browne, who has had a decade-long struggle with irritable bowel syndrome, wrote the book to couple the healing power of whole plant-based foods with creative recipes to please the palate. Browne completed her bachelor of arts in English literature at the University of the Fraser Valley and has a certificate in plantbased nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Centre for Nutrition Studies. Her first book with Skyhorse Publishing was Happy Healthy Gut, and she has two more being released next year.
Gas prices stubbornly high Low loonie, U.S. refineries blamed for pump pain Jeff NAGEL Black Press
Gas prices remain stubbornly high despite the latest slide in crude oil prices, and infuriated Lower Mainland motorists are feeling gouged yet again. Metro Vancouver gasoline is down only slightly from $1.40 a litre a year ago, while crude has plunged more than 50 per cent from around $98 a barrel to less than $44 as of Friday. Gas was about $1.20 per litre in Abbotsford on Monday. It’s as if the widely heralded era of cheap energy has bypassed B.C. But petroleum industry analysts say it all boils down to supply and demand. Crude oil accounts for less than half of the end cost of a litre of gasoline, with government taxes and refining charges the other big factors. “I wish there was a simple explanation,” said Jason Parent of the Kent Marketing Group. “There isn’t much of a relationship on a dayto-day basis between crude oil and retail gasoline.” Expecting gas to move in lockstep with crude oil is somewhat akin to expecting house prices to follow lumber prices, without recognizing scarce land or an influx of buyers might have an influence. Parent said oil and gas prices can go in different directions for different reasons, and gas prices in B.C. can diverge from what other Canadians pay – which is what’s happening now. Most of the difference between Metro Vancouver prices and the rest of the country is explained by the higher 17-cent-a-litre TransLink tax as well as B.C.’s carbon tax. Motorists are paying just over $1 in Alberta, a few cents more in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and $1.10 to $1.20 in most of Eastern Canada. But even after taxes are factored out, Vancouver prices are 5 to 15 cents a litre higher than most other cities across Canada.
The reason, Parent said, is that Vancouverarea prices follow those along the U.S. west coast, where the wholesale gas supply has been constricted by refinery problems in California, driving prices up. “Wholesale prices have been high there relative to the rest of the U.S. for a month now,” Parent said. Some gasoline comes to B.C. through the Kinder Morgan pipeline, but the rest comes
from Washington State or other U.S. refineries. Another “huge” factor behind why Canadians in general aren’t yet seeing much relief at the pumps is the drop in the loonie over the past year. Crude and wholesale gas are priced in U.S. dollars, so Canadians are paying with a devalued currency that simply doesn’t go as far as it did a year ago. So who is profiting from the persistently high pump prices?
“Right now, refiners are the big winners,” Parent said. They’re running close to capacity, demand is up because of lower gas prices and therefore refiners can charge more than usual. If crude oil prices get even cheaper – potentially as sanctions against Iran end and more oil pours onto the world market – there’s no guarantee gas prices will follow because of the refining constraints in North America.

Port Mann tolls climb to $3.15 per crossing 15-cent increase more than five-cent hike at Golden Ears

Tolls are rising 15 cents to $3.15 per crossing to use the Port Mann Bridge. The province’s Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n Investment Corp. said the increase from $3 for small vehicles effective Aug. 15 is re-
system early enough. Tolls had not been raised since then. “There will be nominal increases from time to time,” TI Corp. CEO Irene Kerr said. TransLink also raised the toll on the Golden Ears Bridge earlier this summer – five cents to $3.05 per crossing.
WAS IT
Pure Excellence?
The Port Mann increase comes after a revised TI Corp. financial outlook made public earlier this year showed annual operating losses had climbed above $100 million per year because the number of drivers using the bridge and the resulting toll revenue has not met original forecasts. But Kerr rejected suggestions that was a factor in this summer’s toll hike. “We’re right on track for meeting our finan-
cial obligations and paying back the debt,” Kerr said. The total project debt has climbed to $3.6 billion from an initial project cost of $3.3 billion and 2014 actually saw a 3.9 per cent decrease in Port Mann bridge use. TI Corp. expects improved performance in future years. Traffic has been up so far in 2015. There were 112,300 crossings per day on average in June, up 5.6 per cent from

rise in the future, as BC Ferries has done by telegraphing its intent to raise fares two per cent in each of the next four years. The TI Corp. is charged with ensuring the project costs are paid off by 2050, when tolls on the bridge are supposed to end. Medium vehicles – cars with trailers, cube vans and motor homes – will now pay $6.30 per crossing instead of $6, while larger vehicles like commercial trucks and buses will pay $9.45 instead of $9. The toll for motorcycles rises from $1.50 to $1.60.

the same month a year earlier and up 3.1 per cent from June 2013. NDP transportation critic Claire Trevena said drivers continue to pay the price for a project that has failed to meet expectations. “The forecast in 2006 was for almost 149,000 daily crossings by 2013,” she said. “The actual crossings are nowhere near that.” Higher tolls may drive use down further, worsening the financial picture and the congestion at free crossings, Trevena said. She said the province should give drivers “fair warning” of how tolls are expected to

Bradley Braich of Abbotsford was named as a secondteam all-star at the National Basketball Championships.
Braich from beyond the arc Shooting guard Bradley Braich was on fire from three-point land in national basketball action last week. The Abbotsford baller was selected as a secondteam all-star after a tournament performance with Team BC that saw him net 17 three-pointers — more than any other player in the U15 and U17 divisions at the National Basketball Championships Aug. 3-8. Braich was part of the 12-man contingent competing among nine other teams featuring their respective province’s best young players. The coach for the U15 Team BC squad, Bobby Braich, who is also Bradley’s father, said the team’s fifth-place finish was a great experience for the group and a slight improvement on last year’s sixth place result in Edmonton. Team BC faced Alberta in their final game to claim fifth in the national championships, overcoming the fellow Western Canadian team, 54-45. Team BC went 2-1 through the round-robin stage, handily beating Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island by more than 30 points, while dropping their game against Saskatchewan. In the quarterfinals, they lost to Quebec, landing them in the consolation bracket where they defeated the host team Nova Scotia 77-70, to advance to the battle for fifth. Team Ontario were the U15 boys’ champions. Bobby coaches the junior basketball team at Yale Secondary, where Bradley is also a student and member of the team.

Quast claims two regional records STAY COOL Brandon KOSTINUK Abbotsford News
There were 115 Abbotsford Whalers at the Fraser Valley regional meet this past weekend, with one setting two regional records. Division 5 swimmer Fallon Quast exploded at Centennial Pool, breaking records in the 50- and 100-metre butterfly events with times of 1:09.40 and 30.24 seconds, respectively. Quast will be pushing for the provincial record in both categories in the upcoming B.C. championships, as the fastest times posted for either are just a second or so shy of the Abbotsford swimmer’s marks. Quast managed to scoop up four first-place victories in her solo events, and an additional two in relay events. Whalers coach Bill Murray said the team exceeded his expectations as the club continued its season trend of topping personal bests, while a hand-
ful of swimmers once more swept podium placements across their respective events. Mervin (Div. 4) and Mary Rose Jerodico (Div. 2) dominated the four events they took part in, along with Brittany Paget (Div. 3) and Amy Connorton (Div. 4). Another standout from was Rachel Kennedy (Div. 3). She is almost always overlooked, Murray said, but in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle contests, Kennedy improved on her times secured in the preliminary heats – by a couple seconds in the latter – to claim second in the finals of both events. Murray said the Whalers will be sending a strong contingent to the provincial championships, which are being held in Victoria, Aug. 21-23. At this year’s regional meet, there were upwards of 400 swimmers competing.

Frank J. 1945 ~ 2015 We are heartbroken and devastated to lose our husband, father, and Papa after a short fight with cancer. He loved his family and believed it was the most important thing in life. He taught us all so much. He was always willing to help out, the first one we called with a question or if we had something to say or just wanted to chat. He was well loved and will be ridiculously missed. He was an amazing man. His family was able to be with him at the end to say goodbye with love. He is survived by his wife, Elsie, daughters Rhonda (Doug) and Jodie (Scott), son Frank (Michelle) and eight grand-children. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC Children’s Hospital or the Kids With Cancer Society. An Open House will be held in Chilliwack on Friday, August 14th from 4:00 - 9:00 pm at 45304 Tamihi Way (Garrison).

George Mr. George Martin Gage, affectionately known as “Marty” late of Ponoka, Alberta, passed away on August 2, 2015 at the age of 87 at The Residence in Mission, BC. Marty was born in Hanna, Alberta on February 3, 1928. He was predeceased by his parents, George Harvey Gage and Gladys Catherine Gage; wife, Vivian Gage (nee Hughes); step son, James; older sister, Dorothy, younger sister, Muriel; survived by brother, Richard, sister, Helen; son, Wesley, daughter, Kathy, step son, John, step son, David, step daughter, Julie; extended family and friends. Marty worked for 35 years as a nursing aid at the Provincial Hospital in Ponoka, Alberta, and upon retirement, moved with wife Vivian to Abbotsford, BC in 1984, where they enjoyed many years of volunteer work in Home Care and with the MSA Hospital. Together with Vivian since 1975, they were inseparable during all of their daily routines and would frequently be seen around Abbotsford at their favorite Tim Hortons, or performing visitations at local facilities for the sick and elderly. Marty was always proud of their involvement in community organizations in both Alberta and BC. They shared a life time full of memories and happiness and never stopped giving back to their community. The family would like to thank all the nurses and caregivers that helped Dad on his journey through the past 6 years, as he suffered with Alzheimer’s. Remembering that his quiet, gentle soul was cherished by all that had the opportunity to know or meet him, he will be dearly missed and not forgotten. With profound sadness, the family announces that our dear Barbara passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2015 after a brief illness. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, John and Elizabeth; her brother Matthew; her sister Clara; her brother Fred and her brother Joe. She will be sadly missed by her siblings Mary (Mike Stevens); Steve; Eva; Annie (Emery Friesen); Beth (Morris Farquhar); and Sylvia (Clive Mason); as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Barbara grew on a farm in Otto, Manitoba, the youngest of a large family that doted on her. Born with a mental handicap, she lived a small yet happy life. Barbara was always busy and industrious as she attend various community programs for the disabled, and she took pride in her work. She lived with family in several places across Manitoba and Saskatchewan before settling in Mission, BC with her sister Eva. Barbara was blessed with a sunny disposition and an affectionate nature, which made her a great favourite with family and friends alike. Funny, joyful, sweet, and willful - she was always beguiling. Barbara loved her heavenly father, Jehovah, and turned to him in prayer often. His promise of a resurrection comforted her especially when she was personally touched by loss and grief. It is this happy hope that continues to sustain us now, and we can’t wait to see her again in paradise. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 7:00 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 32757 7th Avenue, Mission, BC.
