Animal thefts leave Chilliwack farmers worried RCMP investigating the latest theft Jessica Peters The Progress Ria Rumph wants to send a message to the people who stole her goat on Saturday night. “I want to let them know that they’ve been seen,” she says. At least two men were noticed sneaking around her farm and loading up her goat. Chilliwack RCMP confirmed they are working on the case, with the help of the AgriWatch program. “We’re aware of this, and we take it seriously,” says Corp. Mike Rail. “This is livestock.” Rumph has had three goats stolen in the last few There is a large weeks, causing local farmers demand for to worry that more goat thefts are on the horizon. goat meat and “Two weeks ago, two went missing during the day,” a big shortage Rumph said. And then on Saturday night, her neigh~ Susan bour heard the goats “screaming” and looked out in time to Barker note some pertinent information about the men and their vehicle. The theft has shaken Rumph, as she worries about the fate of her goats and whether they are being treated properly, or if they’ve already been slaughtered. She hopes they’ve been treated humanely. It’s a heartbreaking theft that goes beyond the obvious financial losses. Rumph has been raising goats for the last 13 years, at the corner of Lickman Road and South Sumas. Her venture with goats follows years of dairy farming, both here in Canada and in Holland. The milk from her herd goes just down the road, to Smits & Co.w Farm Cheese, where it’s turned into delicious cheeses. Goat cheese has been popular for decades, but both goat cheese and meat are becoming more desirable than ever. Meat is in high demand, for its taste and because it’s lower in cholesterol. B.C. goat milk is very popular across Canada, and highly sought after. Goat meat is popular in many different ethnic dishes, and goats often sell for a higher prices around holidays, including Ramadan. But that was more than a month ago, and there are no other holidays right now that Rumph is aware of.

Celebration marks the opening of new ‘Toad Tunnel’ Jennifer Feinberg The Progress There’s light at the end of the toad tunnel. Fraser Valley Conservancy reps, project partners and supporters gathered to cut the ribbon Saturday morning on the recently completed amphibian crossing tunnel. The Ryder Lake Amphibian Protection Project features a concrete culvert built under Elk View Road that has already been put to good use this summer. “This is really a community issue,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz during the ribbon cutting. “Something about this project resonated with all of us.” There was sense of community pride that led to locals and FVC officials to put their heads and hearts together to come up with a solution, said Gaetz.

“Grandma used to tell us that if we looked after the little things in life, the big things would take care of themselves,” said the mayor. “Today this is such a poignant example of that,” she said. “Thanks to everyone who rolled up their sleeves.” It all started with a toadlet rescue operation with the help of a 150-strong volunteer bucket brigade in 2008. The problem was the road cut right through the path of migrating toads, which meant lots of squished toadlets and frogs every year. The following year they tried a bucket brigade along with temporary road closures, and then moved to mainly road closures, asking local motorists to avoid the hotspots where toadlets were trying to cross Ryder Lake Road and Elk View Road.

But they were seeking a more permanent solution. They continued migratory monitoring of frogs and toads at night, and testing various crossing structures, and voluntary road detours. By last year they were looking at a specific tunnel design and started planning the construction for 2015. The little hoppers follow along the “directive fencing” that leads them right to the tunnel. Manholes were installed to allow light into the tunnel to help attract the toads into the culvert structure. The toadlets started crossing early this year, on June 22, possibly because it was a warmer than average spring, and they used the new tunnel and guidance fencing with aplomb. “This project would not have been possible without continuing support from the local community,”

Migrating toadlets now have a safe way to cross Elk View Road. JENNIFER FEINBERG/ THE PROGRESS

said FVC officials on their website. “Thank you! We enjoyed sharing the success of the first migration through the amphibian crossing structure and are looking forward to continuing to monitor these

One of the most iconic bombers of the Second World War will be at the Chilliwack Airshow on Saturday. The B-17 Flying Fortress will be joined by a P-51 Mustang. The popular airshow, which features some of the finest aerobatic pilots in the business, kicks off Saturday night. LYLE JANSMA PHOTO

fighter aircraft, which is too fast to land at our airport, will be kept just under sub-sonic levels as it does some fly-bys on Sunday afternoon, “to keep our windows intact.” The Chilliwack Airshow was also able to acquire a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, a large, four-engine Second World War bomber. The aircraft, brought in from the Erickson Aircraft Collection in Madras, Oregon, is one of the few remaining airworthy B-17s in the world, and the only “Pathfinder” model (equipped with H2X radar) left in existence. The B-17 will be accompanied by another “warbird,” the P-51 Mustang which was unable to make it here last

year due to weather. This 1945 aircraft was used by the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American squadron of pilots in the Second World War. Amateur photographers are invited to take part in the photo contest, where the best photo of the rare warbirds will win its photographer a ride in Super Dave’s MX2. The entry fee is $100 and shooting will begin Friday evening. RSVP by Aug. 13 to reserve your spot in the contest. The fun-filled Hanger Dance is back again this year. A $40 entry fee covers your barbecue dinner (catered by Garrison Bistro) and live entertainment by The Vacationers and Trevor McDonald.

All proceeds from the Hanger Dance go toward funding the airshow, along with the publics’ donations. “I’ve performed all over the world, but the Chilliwack Airshow is the most community-oriented airshow that I’ve ever performed at” said Fowler. “We are very fortunate and happy to have so many generous supporters,” Atkins explains in reference to the Chilliwack Flight Fest Society volunteers and sponsors, “without those individuals and businesses in the community, there wouldn’t be a show.” Visit chilliwackairshow.ca for a full list and description of this year’s performances.

Garbage dumpers around Chilliwack can no longer plead ignorance. New anti-dumping signage was rolled out Tuesday morning by City of Chilliwack and Fraser Valley Illegal Dumping Alliance to try to curb the deleterious practice. The signs advise the public to call in thoughtless dumpers and polluters using the RAPP line. “The idea behind these signs is to send a clear message that this community won’t tolerate illegal dumpers fouling up the recreational areas that its members love to enjoy,” says Fraser Riverkeeper Joe Daniels. The signs, designed by Fraser Riverkeeper on behalf of the Fraser Valley Illegal Dumping Alliance, with support from BC Hydro, are being installed at Pegleg Bar, Jesperson Boat Launch, Rosedale Bar, and Old Orchard Boat Launch. The first one went up Tuesday morning at Pegleg, and part of it reads: “Don’t trash our future!” “Providing information about places where people can dispose of their waste legally means dumpers can no longer plead ignorance as an excuse for their behaviour, while the CO Service RAPP hotline gives community members the tools they need to report illegal dumping whenever and wherever they see it.” The sign lists The RAPP line number (Report All Poachers and Polluters) at 1-877-952-RAPP, as well offering the locations of waste disposal sites, including the Bailey Landfill, Parr Road Green Depot, and Chilliwack and Sardis Bottle Depots, where community members and visitors can dump their garbage legally. This updated signage is part of an ongoing campaign by the anti-dumping alliance which has already succeeded in increasing the number of reports to the RAPP hotline, according to conservation officer Steven Jacobi, in a recent interview with The Progress.

Keep up the hype from the Abbotsford Airshow, but without the entry fee. This Saturday and Sunday, the Chilliwack Airshow is back on for its 24th year. As one of the few remaining free-admission airshows, the event “always get a great turnout,” says Garry Atkins, a director with the Chilliwack Airshow Committee and manager of the Chilliwack Airport. Typically, the show draws “a crowd of about 10,000.” Pyrotechnic, aerobatic performances will light up the Saturday night sky. Team Rocket (Ken Fowler and Eric Hanson) and “Super Dave” Mathieson, will show off their precision and speed, lit-up by fireworks mounted under the wings. Live video from the cockpit will stream on the large viewing screen. Fowler helped train Super Dave in the challenging art. “Pyro is not just something you can jump into,” he says. “Last year, we got him up to speed on the training side of it,” Fowler explains, “but his airplane wasn’t quite ready, so he borrowed mine for the show.” This year, Super Dave will perform pyrotechnics in his own plane. Also in the show are newcomers to Chilliwack, like Alberta brothers David and Drew Watson (known as Yellow Thunder) and returning performers, including Bud and Ross Granley and more. “Most people like the noise, especially in the finale,” said Atkins. “And we’ve confirmed that we’re going to have the CF-18 Hornet this year.” The

News Anglers urged to fish selectively to avoid sockeye Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Anglers should avoid sockeye salmon as they run the gauntlet up the Fraser River. There is no retention for sockeye permitted right now, so the recreational fishermen are being urged to fish selectively when going after pink, chinook and chum salmon. Warmer than average in-river temperatures and the threat of heavy pre-spawn mortalities were enough to convince Fisheries and Oceans Canada to once again issue a notice to the recreational fishing community along the Fraser.

It’s about four years since they started to actively discourage bottom bouncing. It’s not a formal regulation on the books yet, but is a strong recommendation to avoid the practice known as bottom bouncing, using long leader lines for the purpose of “flossing” their catch. “The first principle of selective harvesting is to avoid catching non-targeted stocks,” reads the DFO recreational fishing notice of July 30. “This means that anglers should use methods that do not catch sockeye.” Methods that rarely intercept sockeye include bar fishing, trolling spoons at creek

Directors Sought for Cascade Lower Canyon Community Forest The Cascade Lower Canyon Community Forest includes about 26,000 hectares of forest land largely in the vicinity of Hope. The CLCCF is a 3-way community forest partnership of the District of Hope, the Yale First Nation and the Fraser Valley Regional District. The CLCCF wishes to have some new volunteer (unpaid) Directors, each representing one of the shareholders, working with the General Manager toward the best interests of the community forest. Interested applicants can refer to the CLCCF website located at www.clccf.ca under the menu tab “Board & Mngt”. Full details of Director’s duties and the CLCCF structure can be found on the website in the “Corporate Governance Policy”. Interested persons are to submit their completed applications either to kallan@clccf.ca or by mail to CLCCF, PO Box 377, Hope, BC V0X 1L0 to arrive by September 1. New Directors are intended to start at the CLCCF AGM, scheduled for September 30 at 6:30 pm in the conference room, 2nd floor at the rear of the Hope & District Recreation Centre. 8/15H_CLCCF6

mouths, float fishing, pulling plugs and fly fishing. “Please note that bottom bouncing is NOT considered a selective fishing method and is strongly discouraged,” according to the DFO notice. They plan to monitor the situation, and it came with a gentle warning: “Should DFO feel that the rate of compliance is insufficient to ensure the adequate passage of sockeye, spot closures or a ‘no fishing for salmon’ restriction may result.” The recreational fishing community is on-board, handing out freshly printed flyers this week at tackle shops and river spots. The flyers are

emblazoned with the headline: “Help keep Fraser fishing open!” It’s recognition that the environmental conditions in the river are impacting salmon stocks of concern, and that selective methods are the best way to go, said Nick Basok, an employee at Chilliwack Dart and Tackle, and vice president of the Fraser Valley Salmon Society. “They want people to fish more traditionally. Flossing is not selective,” said Basok. “It often catches whatever is swimming up the river at the time.”

Much to explore at Island 22 Sam Bates

Explore Chilliwack

The Progress Island 22 Regional Park has something for everybody. Well known for its equestrian facilities, there is also a large boat launch along the Fraser River, a new bike skills and jump area, an off-leash dog park, and a variety of scenic trails. This 132 hectare park – owned by the City of Chilliwack, managed by the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD), maintained by the volunteer Park Society – started out as only a boat launch (often used for military training) and camping area. In 1986, local fathers Heinrich Meister and Rolf Wedler looked to Island 22 to be a space

where a safe, wellplanned equestrian destination could be built for their children and other young riders in the community. No other public equestrian event courses existed in the Lower Mainland at the time. “We wanted to build a competitive, recognized event course,” says Meister. The District of Chilliwack agreed, and the course design (created by Sean Flynn) was approved for building. A $25,000 grant was

awarded to start clearing the land. After two full years of building, with an outpouring of help from volunteers and farmers in the community, Island 22 hosted its first event – the 1989 Mount Cheam Pony Club event. Today, Island 22 maintains a plethora of equestrian amenities, including riding rings, jumps and trails, and the park hosts several equestrian events annually. Even visitors who do not ride horses enjoy watching the riders train in jump courses. Island 22 was once a popular camping destination, offering a ‘secluded’ atmosphere within pizza-delivery distance from town. However, “when the

river shifted in the early 2000s,” Meister explains “we lost about 70 acres of land.” While the erosion meant that camping would no longer be available at the park, the remaining land was converted by FVRD into a large, fenced-in, off-leash dog area, for those who are fans of another four-legged friend. The newest addition to Island 22 came in April 2013. The $200,000 bike skills park was a joint initiative between the City of Chilliwack and the FVRD. Park designer, Jay Hoots, has designed more than a dozen community-based bike parks and trails in BC.

R AESIDE

We are now at the beginning of a very long march to the Oct. 19 federal election. More than one analyst has said this excruciatingly long campaign will favour the incumbent Conservative party, which has more financial resources than its NDP, Liberal and Green rivals, not to mention the many smaller parties that will also be fielding candidates. But there is a fairly obvious risk of running a campaign for more than two months - the increased possibility of a faux pas that turns voters off. The experienced Conservatives, with their reputation for internal discipline, would seem more likely to avoid that sort of crash and burn. But experience and discipline don’t always guarantee re-election. Sometimes, political parties get too comfortable with being in power and they lose touch with the people who put them there. After several victories, a sense of entitlement can creep in. If that happens, the electorate may come to see even worthy policies as the product of people who are out of touch, and the opponents of that party can use that feeling to their advantage. Many people will vote purely because they think Stephen Harper should remain prime minister or because they think he should be replaced by Tom Mulcair or Justin Trudeau or Elizabeth May. Even though none of them are running as candidates locally. Sadly, Chilliwack candidates and Chilliwack issues don’t get nearly as much attention as they should in the sound and fury of a national campaign. This paper thinks residents should consider voting for the candidate who best understands their local issues and is prepared to act on them. So, please. Get informed about your local candidates. Go to the candidate forums, read your local community papers and, most importantly, when Oct. 19 arrives, vote. ~ Black Press

Sorting out some of the federal election issues VICTORIA – The first, and perhaps the only complete Englishlanguage debate in this long federal election campaign has helped define the issues, and the nonissues. I’m not going to try to tell you who “won” or “came out swinging,” because this is not a sporting event. If you’re paying attention in August, bless you, and you probably have a favourite already. First, let’s deal with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s diabolical scheme to extend the length of the formal election period. This, according to national pundits, is an extension of his evil plot to attract more financial supporters than the other parties, and spend the money. In other words, it’s a non-issue and any opponent who dwells on it looks like a whiner. This is the first election in modern Canadian history to follow a four-year schedule. National

pundits spent months telling us Harper was going to use a loophole in his own election law to call a spring vote before the economy tanked. Didn’t happen, and now the Conservatives are rightly under scrutiny about their economic management. Incumbent manipulation of election timing is Tom over, and that’s FLETCHER good. Scheduled elections by their nature create longer campaigns, as demonstrated in B.C. and the United States. So they should be conducted under formal campaign rules, which limit the noise of public sector unions and other special interests. Another non-issue is the nonexistent deficit and recession

that supposedly grips Canada. On actual results, there is a slim surplus, and if – a big if – Saudi Arabia continues to depress world oil prices, there may be a modest deficit by next spring. The Bank of Canada’s recent move to devalue the dollar has already produced a rebound in exports and tourism, which any government would appreciate. Have you tried to find parking at the mall lately? Of particular interest to B.C. voters is the contest between NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and Green Party leader Elizabeth May. May used what may be her only national debate appearance to press Mulcair to oppose the TransMountain pipeline expansion project before hearings are complete. Mindful of Adrian Dix’s disastrous 2013 decision to do the same in B.C., Mulcair insisted he

would wait for the federal review, even though he considers it to be inadequate. This is, of course, all theatre. Based on their actions, the NDP, Green Party and Liberals are all opposed not just to oil pipelines but export gas pipelines as well. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau wants to cancel capital cost allowances for liquefied natural gas investment that have been granted by B.C. and Ottawa, which could be a deal-breaker for LNG. B.C. NDP leader John Horgan formalized his opposition to the TransMountain expansion last week, in a letter filed with the National Energy Board. But we’re expected to believe that Mulcair has a different position, for now. Harper was forced to admit that his long effort to persuade U.S. President Barack Obama to approve the Keystone XL pipeline has failed, and the project will

have to wait until Obama leaves office next year. The debate also confirmed positions on Canada’s modest role in bombing Islamic State terrorist positions in Iraq and Syria. The Conservatives are for it, and the Liberals, NDP and Greens are against it. Trudeau set the stage for the contest in Quebec, which B.C. voters can only watch from afar to see if it once again decides the shape of their federal government. Trudeau pushed Mulcair on his cynical bid to court the separatist voters who suddenly swung to Jack Layton’s NDP in 2011. Like petroleum prices, it’s beyond our control. Drivers urged to obey signs I was working on July 28 on South Sumas Road as a traffic control person. I am finding more and more people are not obeying the signs that are put there for the safety of the workers and everybody else. The signs are set out to let you know there is construction ahead. That day I was approached by a young gentleman and I offered to assist him around the equipment. He agreed happily because he needed the help as he told me

he was blind. I was walking with him and had my paddle facing the traffic behind us for them to stop. We continued to walk and the next thing you know is the two cars behind us decide to drive up and pass us, putting both myself and the blind gentleman in danger. We try to be nice and not keep the traffic stopped for too long, but that was the proper procedure to do. The traffic control person that is out there is to keep the travel-

ing public safe. You could be causing a major accident and bringing harm to those who are hired to protect you. These signs are not for decoration. The bright overhead lights that are flashing does not mean they have a short in the wiring. They are to be obeyed because there is traffic control ahead. Use your head and slow down, please. Our job is to keep people safe. Thomas Wood

MP’s letter draws questions Over the years I have consistently responded to MP Mark Strahl’s constituent sur veys even though the majority have consisted of simplistic questions along with potted answers weighted in the favour of Conservative Party of Canada ideology. I have generally added my own answers (responses) with an effort toward

honesty and realism and, at times, sarcasm. In a letter dated August 7, 2015 Mr. Strahl thanked me for my important feedback on the last survey that he had sent out on the taxpayer’s dime. This is the first and only time that I have received this acknowledgement, again at the tax payer’s expense. Now I realize

that it is legal for Mr. Strahl to take advantage of the MP’s ability to send postage free mail to constituents but, is it ethical to use this MP privilege during the Writ period to send this unprecedented acknowledgement that places his name, face and position prominently in my hands? I wonder how many

others are receiving this same, one of a kind, acknowledgement throughout this riding. I wonder how many other Conservative held ridings are also being inundated with this crass method of electioneering at tax payer’s expense.

Concern over proposed abattoir location There are several reasons for not building an abattoir in the middle of town as proposed. The following are some of them: 1. The stench from slaughter houses is an over powering thing. I’ve been most of the way around the world, and back, and have yet to see one that doesn’t stink. Even if you could contain the stench in house, what about outside? 2. Where are you going to

clean and sterilize the live stock trucks? You can’t keep that inside the building, and you can’t wash all that manure down the town sewer, so that means the stench will be outside for all residents to share, and enjoy. 3. There is no infrastructure to handle all these livestock trucks that would be coming to town to deliver the livestock. All citizens should be up in arms, and put a stop to this idiotic plan, especially those that will

be down wind of this marvelous aroma. Come to think of it, how many would-be citizens would move into an area that has a slaughter house in the back yard. If you really need a slaughter house in Chilliwack put it out on the eastern side of Rosedale, where the prevailing winds will blow the stench away from the residents. J. G. Van Alstyne Sardis

Finding the proper balance Just a short letter to commend Jessica Peters for her column, “The danger in seeing strangers everywhereâ€?, in the August 7 edition of your paper. Jessica reminded

us that while we must teach our children to be aware, cautious and trust their “gut feelings with strangers, and also people they know, we also need to be sure not to frighten

them so much they become insular and isolated. We must teach them to have good inter-personal communication skills so we all can have happy, nurturing rela-

tionships. Personal touch helps heal body and soul; we must not lose that. Well done, Jessica!

Fishers want tougher enforcement Thieves get Chilliwack’s goat FISHERS from page 5 They’ve been handing out flyers and talking to people about leader lengths and selective fishing methods. “Some will never change but others will take note. You can only do what you can,” he said. They would prefer that DFO took the next step to make it enforceable, rather than a recommendation. “We really want the onus put on enforcement,” he said. “They should go into the tackle boxes and make it law.” A recent creel survey of anglers along the river showed that about 70 per cent of fishermen are still bottom bouncing, sometimes called snagging or

flossing. “But a lot more people are bar fishing,” Basok underlined. “It’s nowhere near the number that are bottom bouncing, but that is not sport fishing — it’s harvesting. “ They’re actively flossing at hotspots like Peg Leg, Laidlaw Pipe and Scale Bar, but other spots see more bar fishing like

Gill Road. In the meantime they’re warning folks that failure by the fishing community to fish selectively could result in the total closure of the salmon fishery. “This priceless resource belongs to all of us,” reads the flyer put out by several sport fishing groups and organizations. “Let’s demonstrate responsible stewardship.” Groups like the B.C. Federation of Drift Fishers, Fraser Valley Salmon Society, FV Angling Guides Assoc., Fishing with Rod and the local tackle shops signed off on the flyer initiative, and are “optimistic” the angling community will follow suit. jfeinberg@theprogress.com twitter.com/chwkjourno

GOAT from page Front It’s difficult to find goats once they’ve been stolen. Rumph’s goats don’t have tattoos, and goats are generally not tagged. “I would know them,” she says, if she saw them. But the only official markings would be the numbers on the chains around their necks. This is not the first time goat thefts have worried local farmers. Back in November of 2010, about 70 goats in total were stolen from various farms around Chilliwack. Half of them belonged to nowretired goat farmer Susan Barker. And half of those goats were pregnant at the time. “The police are pretty sure who

stole mine,” Barker says. “But nothing was ever done.” Goats range in price from $150 to $500, depending on numerous factors such as their heritage, their use, and their age. She said thieves who take farm animals for consumption are risking more than theft charges. They don’t know the history of the goat, whether it’s pregnant or not, or whether it’s sick and on antibiotics. But that seems not to matter to those willing to take that risk. “There is a large demand for goat meat and a big shortage,” Barker says. “And then there are some people who just get the pleasure of stealing.” jpeters@theprogress.com

Having bad breath or ‘halitosis’ can be an embarrassing and frustrating issue to deal with. We all at some point in time have experienced our own bad breath, or someone else’s. Sometimes no matter how much we brush, floss or rinse we cannot escape that lingering odour, or metallic taste. So, what are the most common causes of bad breath, and how do we deal with them? Oral infections are a major source of foul odours. They can be deep inside the jaw bone around the root or more superficial around the gum line. They can sometimes drain pus into the mouth, and enter the bloodstream circulating to vital organs like the heart. These infections can actually affect a person’s ability to properly control their blood sugar levels as well. Old fillings with poor seals around the teeth and decay around the fillings can also affect bad breath. If there are rough areas around older fillings bacteria will start to reside there in larger numbers. These bacteria will eventually

be the reason decay develops around these fillings. The gases they produce as a byproduct are very foul smelling. So the more old fillings, and the more decay present, the higher the likelihood you will have bad breath. Other sources for bad breath include having a dry mouth, gases coming from the stomach, a diet high in sulfur containing foods i.e.) onion, garlic. Not brushing the tongue, and food stuck between teeth are two more common reasons bad breath exists. Certain medical conditions and medications can contribute to halitosis as well. If you suspect you have a bad taste coming from your mouth, or just bad breath it would be a good idea to ask your dentist to examine your mouth for the potential causes. Some of the causes can be dealt with by brushing and flossing your teeth and tongue more regularly. Some of the causes may mean replacing old fillings. Certain infections may require antibiotics as well as root canals or extractions of teeth. Whatever the cause, it is important to rule out specific ones that can potentially have more serious systemic health risks.

Sweet sounds will be serenading Chilliwack on the south side starting Thursday night. Southside Rocks the River returns with a free outdoor stage near the Vedder Bridge for the next three Thursday nights. This a chance to showcase some excellent bands and singer-songwriters, says organizer Jeff Bonner of Tractorgrease Studio. The idea is for residents to stroll down the Vedder Rotary trail, from Garrison or from downtown to enjoy some live music,

he said. “We’re trying to mix it up this year for all ages,” Bonner said. The Aug. 13 lineup will be rockabilly trio The Dusty Aces, followed by Lori Paul and Spiderlodge, indie rockers Midnight Lions and singer-songwriter Matt Lowen. “We’ve assembled some of the most entertaining and creative local musicians to play this year.” They’ll be putting the spotlight on young songwriters and up and coming bands this year, which is something Tractorgrease already has a reputation for doing as part of the Music Songwriters 101. “We’re also lucky enough this year to

11

be able to host some bands that are on tour who will show up later at the café.” West My Friend or Chicken Like Birds will be playing aftershows at Tractorgrease Cafe when everything shuts down at the riverside stage by 9:30. Southside Rocks the River is partnering with Chilliwack Community Arts Council this year, a local arts umbrella organization, that is bringing along some local artisans and food trucks to spice up the musical atmosphere. “Bring a folding chair or a blanket and a jacket maybe in case it gets cooler at night,” he said. The event dates are Aug. 13, Aug. 20, and Aug. 27.

The action is set to start at 4 p.m. when the artisan booths open, then yoga by Inner Vision Yoga at 5 p.m., with the music going live at 6 p.m. There’s also a Core Fitness/Stretch starting at 7 p.m. by Inner Vision Yoga and the Chilliwack Family YMCA. Here’s the rest of the lineup: On Aug. 20, it’s The Lounge Hounds, Maggpie, The Tractorgrease Folk, and West My Friend On Aug. 27, it’s Gerald Charlie, Relic’s Jetboat, Little Wild, and Chicken Like Birds. There is free parking just off Vedder Road at the trailhead, and the concert stage will be just to the right of it.

A closer look at Island 22 ISLAND 22 from page 7 In coordination with the FVRD and riders in the community, Hoots designed the park to enable riders of all ages and abilities to work on their skills by training on hills, trails and jumps that progress in difficulty. The bike park caters to a large community of Chilliwack riders, including Elijah Loewen (pictured, page 7) and Ash Burke who were thrilled to show off some of their skills in the progression jumps and advanced jumps, which intricately weave between pre-existing cedars. The beautiful park trails are shared by equestrian riders, cyclists, pedestrians and leashed-dogs, taking in the sights and sounds that Island 22 provides. The ample boat launch can accommodate a dozen simultaneous launchings, making it one of the largest in the Lower Mainland. This well-known launch is used to send fisherman off into the Fraser and Harrison rivers to catch salmon, sturgeon, trout and other water-dwellers. Island 22 is hosting its 28th annual B.C. Championship Equestrian event August 28-30, and it will also be hosting the popular Unbridled Mud Trials for the third time on September 26.

The Fair is back! This year’s Fair at the PNE is full of returning favourites like SuperDogs and many shows and attractions that will be here one year only, such as The Broadway Musical, Peter Pan, over 35 new nightly concert acts, A Beatles Memorabilia Exhibition, Superhero Discovery Centre and Dinosaurs Alive! A Jurassic Experience. Also new this year - a brand new Craft Beer Fest, a perfect pairing to the 5th annual Vancouver Rib Festival and Dueling Pianos.

Selling your home? Does your home pass the ‘sniff’ test? Your home should look great when it goes on the market. When you are ready to list your home, go through each room with a critical eye. What should you look for? Start with the ceiling; look for any cracks or water stains, then inspect the condition of the paint and walls. Make sure that the windows are clean and window treatments are attractive. All of the closets and storage spaces should be neat and organized (a cluttered closet looks smaller!). If the rooms seem cluttered with too much furniture, you can create a more spacious look by storing your “overflow”. A well-maintained house tends to sell much quicker than one where buyers must use a lot of imagination. The condition of your house will help to determine the selling price; the better the house looks, the better your chances of selling it for top dollar. Your REALTOR® can help you identify the repairs and cleaning that will increase your home’s marketability. Another factor to take into account when selling your home is that prospective buyers may react strongly to the way a home smells. Smoke, pet odors, strong disinfectants, insecticides, kitty litter, and french fries have all been known to dampen the enthusiasm of buyers who might otherwise respond positively to a house that would meet their needs. Be sure that your home passes the sniff test when it is on the market. Smoke and pets are the biggest offenders. We become accustomed to the various “scents” in our own

I have lived in Chilliwack for over 45 years, raising a family and watching this city and surrounding areas grow and prosper. I have a passion for real estate and gained knowledge by building, buying and selling my own homes in this area. I took this passion and knowledge a step further and became a REALTOR® in 2005. As a REALTOR® I approach clients with an honest, down to earth, trustworthy attitude. This is a major reason why referrals from past clients are the majority of my business! I have also been a President’s Club Award recipient since 2009.

home and therefore can be offended to hear our home has a “pet” smell or other odors. If your home is on the market and feedback from potential buyers viewing your home suggests that they had an adverse reaction to any odors in your home, don’t despair, there are cleaning services which specialize in odor removal. They may suggest carpet steaming and other techniques to remove unpleasant odors. Even if buyers smoke themselves or have pets, they will react differently to the same odors lingering in a home they are considering. Finally, REALTORS® have all shared stories of having fingers or ankles nipped by furry creatures during a showing, or opened the front door to show a home, only to have a family pet scoot toward the nearby street. If you have pets and you are putting your house on the market, be sure to work out the showing arrangements carefully. It is important for REALTORS® to be able to communicate to their colleagues what to expect when they pass through your front door. Buyers may be allergic or even a little phobic about dogs or cats. It is difficult to get a buyer excited about your home if he or she is sneezing continuously or cowering in a corner in fear of Fido. If your REALTOR® knows there might be a problem, they can arrange ahead of time for you to do whatever is necessary to make sure that the showing goes smoothly.

Huskers hammered by heavyweight The Valley Huskers remain winless three games into the 2015 BC Football Conference season after falling 52-0 in Langley Saturday night. The Rams, a BCFC heavyweight, did most of their offensive damage with a ground game that rolled up 336 yards. Nathan Lund tallied 145 plus two touchdowns on just seven carries, averaging 20.7 yards for each touch of the ball. Backup Devin Logan, a former Chilliwack Minor Football player, chipped in with 73 yards on six carries. Logan had a TD as did Jacob Patko. Three Langley quarterbacks combined to complete eight of 18 passes against a reasonably stout Chilliwack secondary. Dylan Tucker had two touchdown tosses and 151 yards on six completions, hooking up with Bobby Pospischil

and Seye Akinsanmi. The Husker offence generated 170 net yards, most of it in the first half. The ground game was non-existent — three carries for nine yards. Making his third BCFC start, quarterback Noah Falconer completed 17 of 34 passes for 201 yards. Blake Draper had 80 yards recieving on seven catches while Jesse Deering caught four balls for 72 yards. But their unit never got close enough to even try a field goal against a stifling Langley defence that included Chilliwack native Nick Westad. Joining the Rams after spending the previous two years at the University of Manitoba, Westad dropped Falconer for one of Langley’s six quarterback sacks. Jesse Cer vas killed a Husker drive with a fumble recovery that he returned 22 yards for a major. The Chilliwack D failed to force a turnover or QB sack. Connor Smith and Travis Dietrich led the unit with four solo tackles apiece. After being whalloped by three BCFC heavyweights to start the season,

Langley’s Brendan Desjardines and Bashiru Sise Odaa (#18) team up to give Valley Huskers receiver Kellen Pooles a rough ride during the Rams 52-0 victory on Aug. 8 at McLeod Athletic Park. GARY AHUJA/ BLACK PRESS

Broncos dumped the Rebels 60-11 in Kamloops. Bronco running back Jacob Palmarin was the star with

12 carries for 193 yards and five touchdowns. The Okanagan Sun ground out a 27-3 road win in

Nanaimo. Kicker Thomas Huber was busy, nailing five of six field goals, with a Cam Bedore to Kyle

five games. “He has been the guy who has been trying to sort out the pitching staff,” said Langley bench boss Dave Diachuk “We tried a lot of things and he has done a great job. He kicked it up a whole bunch of notches.” Kraemer’s crew was just 3-9 during the Pacific Metro Baseball League regular season, but with this victory they have qualified for next summer’s Canadian national championships in New Brunswick.

Chilliwack’s Keely Dawson is moving to the prairies this fall, joining the Briercrest College womens’ basketball team. A small school located in the small town of Caronport, SK, Briercrest has been the post-secondary spot for several of Chilliwack’s basketball grads, including GW Graham hoopsters Lucas Mannes and Josiah Cockrill. Dawson is a five-foot-six guard out of Sardis secondary. She graduated with honours last spring and Briercrest head coach Dwight Olney looks forward to her arrival. “Keely is a versatile guard, adept at both the point and shooting positions and her commitment strengthens an already solid back court,” Olney explained. “She was an exceptional shooting guard on the Junior (University of the Fraser Valley) Cascades U-17 elite team that went undefeated in 37 games and finished with the No. 1 ranking in Western Canada.” Dawson is excited to attend Briercrest this year. “I’ll be working toward getting my Bachelors of Arts and my Bachelors of Education, and am most excited to work toward my degree while playing the sport I love,” she said. “After spending a week teaching children in a small community in Belize, I realized that my goal in life is to change lives through education.” See briercrest.ca for more info.

Allen Douglas, Black Press Chilliwack native Shane Kraemer won a provincial title Aug. 3, pitching and coaching his Langley Blaze to a BC Senior Mens’ Baseball title. Kraemer tossed one of two no-hitters for the Blaze, who went 5-0 and captured the crown with a 3-2 win over the Coquitlam Angels. National gold Chilliwack’s Rowan Hamilton is a national champion. The local teen traveled to the Ste Therese/ Blainville region of Quebec last week for the 2015 Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships. Hamilton competed in the U-16 division, winning gold in the hammer throw. Hamilton’s best mark in six tries was 55.43 metres. That was significantly better than the second

place finisher, Quebec’s Fabrice Theriault, who could only manage 45.75m. Hamilton grabbed a second medal in the U-16 shot-put, heaving the four kilogram metal ball 14.45m. That left him third, less than a metre behind the winner, Manitoba’s Theo Knowles-Manningway (15.39m). In the one kilogram discus, Hamilton placed fourth with a throw of 42.13m.

ANDERSON, Derek Charles We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear husband, father, and Poppi. Born in Forres, Scotland on June 11, 1946, Derek immigrated in 1952 to Canada. He passed away peacefully on July 24, 2015 at Chilliwack General Hospital after living with Alzheimer’s. Derek worked as a food sales manager and spent many days of his life on the ball diamond. Derek is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife Lynda (nÊe Brown); three beautiful daughters Denni (Hugh McDonald), Michelle, and Nikki (Brian Simituk); and five loving grandchildren (Mackenna, Brayden, Tyson, Cole, and Danica). He is also survived by 6 brothers & their families including countless other members of Clanderson. Derek was pre-deceased by his mother Christina, father Arthur, and sister Sheila Kosterman. We will mostly miss his love of joke telling and gift for making people smile. A celebration of Derek’s life will be at Valley View Chapel, 14660 72nd Ave, Surrey on August 24th, 2015 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Alzheimer Society of BC. Online condolences to the family may be offered at: www.valleyviewsurrey.ca

Ogilvie, Terrance Edward (Ted)

Terrance Edward (Ted) Ogilvie passed away Saturday, July 18th at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. Ted was born January 8th 1941 in Nanaimo, British Columbia. One of Ted’s favourite claims to fame was that he had the same birth date as Elvis Presley. Ted moved to the lower mainland in the mid 60’s and worked as a mortgage broker for a number of years before moving out to Cultus Lake to full fill his dream of owning a pub. He built and successfully operated The Wrangler for many years then returned to the mortgage business. Back in the day, Ted was an accomplished racket ball player, single digit handicapper, card shark and a pool hustler. Ted is survived by a multitude of friends whom he considered all his extended family. Throughout the last few difficult years of his life, Ted showed great strength and tenacity. He was truly an inspiration to all around him for the manner in which he continued to care and give to others. There will a Celebration of Life held, Sunday, October 11th at Major League Pub in Sardis from 2:00 to 6:00. Please join us and hoist a glass of Bacardi and water in Ted’s honour.
