The date for the next federal election remains the same, but Canadian voters are now in the longest election campaign in recent history. Sunday, Aug. 2 marked the beginning of the 2015 federal election campaign, 11 weeks ahead of the scheduled election date of Oct. 19. “Eleven weeks is a long time for people to listen to the campaigning and to see the signage littering the countryside,” said Liberal candidate Connie Denesiuk. “I think it is going to be wearisome for the public, but at the same time, I am excited to be kicking off the campaign locally.” Across the country, 87 per cent of the ridings have had boundary changes, with Okanagan-Coquihalla split into two new ridings by drawing a new boundary between Summerland and Penticton, and merging the southern half with the West Kootenays. With incumbent Conservative MP Dan Albas choosing to run in the new Central OkanaganSimilkameen-Nicola riding, and Alex Atamanenko, NDP incumbent for the former B.C. Southern Interior riding retiring, the field for the new South Okanagan West Kootenay riding was left open. The three current challengers for the riding are Denesiuk, Marshall Neufeld for the Conser-

vatives, Richard Cannings for the NDP and Brian Gray as an independent. The Green Party have yet to name a candidate for SOWK, but say they are planning to field a candidate. Cannings said he expects the riding will see a hard fought race between the Conservatives and the NDP. “It gives us a riding where we have a real chance of winning. We think we have a very good chance of defeating the conservatives here,” said Cannings. Neufeld, who was selected as the Conservative candidate in 2014, has been campaigning for some time. “I have been door-knocking for a couple of months now,” said Neufeld, adding that he doesn’t expect the lengthy election period to affect his plans, though he admits it will be a hard battle for the Conservatives to take the new riding. “It is certainly going to be a tighter race. I believe it is going to be a tight race between the leadership being offered by Stephen Harper and the economic and foreign affairs policies of Thomas Mulcair.” Political pundits atthreehundredeight.com have SOWK heavily slanted to the NDP, projecting 47.5 per cent of the vote. Conservative is projected at 29.4 per cent, and Liberal at 13.2. “If we had a NDP government under Tom

Mulcair, just think of the changes that would happen,” said Cannings, pointing to policies like affordable child care and increased corporate income taxes. “The Conservatives have tried to paint themselves as good fiscal managers, but they have run seven consecutive deficits. “The economy is faltering as the American economy is revving up to the south. It is really time for change.” Denesiuk said the Liberal platform is geared towards change. “Substantive change is what we need, is what I am hearing, and that is exactly what our plan is going to do,” she said. “Conservatives have the worst economic record since the 1930s. Our economy is in a dismal state and we have to get back on track.” Neufeld describes himself as bringing both political and business experience, if elected. “I have been in politics for 15 years now, starting off as a volunteering for Stockwell Day during his leadership race and having worked for 2.5 years as his parliamentary assistant in Ottawa. I understand well the duties and responsibilities of an MP,” he said. “I feel I am well positioned to be a strong voice advocating for the riding.” Like Neufeld, Cannings has never been elected, though he has run for office for the B.C.

On the liner on which she traveled, no lights of any kind were allowed after arrival in the First World War danger zone. Smoking was prohibited and the boat traveled at top speed. Although a submarine was sighted, the liner was able to keep at a safe distance. 1920 R.B. This is the largest number of men fighting one fire for the past three years, according to Harold Holmberg, district forest ranger. 1955 Serious damage resulted to a Grand Forks Sawmills forklift when it caught fire and burned Thursday. Driver of the forklift was George Makortoff. 1960 Joe Armstrong’s ‘razzle dazzle’ campaign rolled into its fourth week in the Greenwood Theatre, as Labor Minister Lyle Wick told close to 100 people that the only way he could get around as much as the Social Credit candidate for this riding was to buy the record Around the World in Eighty Days. 1970 It was announced to city council that regular air service into Grand Forks will commence on Sept. 14. 1975 The Granby Mining Corporation reports net profits of $30,000 or two cents a share for the first nine months, compared

A brand new $2.1-million-dollar, 20-unit senior citizen housing complex is about to go up in the community, thanks in large part to the $230,000 volunteers were able to raise within the Boundary region alone. 2005 A large log loader burst into flames on the Pope & Talbot property. The Wagner loader, worth over $1.4, was situated between the large log piles when it caught fire; A forest service plan from Casltegar was called by P&T to make a pass and drop fire retardant on the adjacent log piles as a precaution. 2010 Wood Works! Pet of the Week
Walter
My name is Walter the Wonder Dog. I am a working dog, and my job is to be a Guide Dog or Seeing Eye Dog for my Mom. I graduated from Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California in 2009, after Mom and I met there and trained together for three weeks. I take Mom to court south of the border, and to prisons sometimes where people are behind lots of big, locked doors. I have traveled on planes, ships, trains, subways and buses. I get to sit by Mom’s feet on the plane, and nose under the seats for any lost peanuts, when I think Mom does not know. I wear a harness that says: “Please Do Not Pet Me. I am Working. Thank You.” Mom explains to people that I am not supposed to be distracted and pay attention to other people or things when I am working, because I need to be able to guide Mom to where she is going, without running her into things. When I am not working with my harness on, I like to swim in the river, run really fast and eat raspberries from the bushes when Mom is not looking. My future plans include helping Mom write my first book, Walter the Wonder Dog Goes to Court.

Wirischagin resigns seat Local politician also facing impaired driving charges The City of Grand Forks announced in a press release Monday that Michael Wirischagin has resigned from council and will be leaving his seat effective immediately. The announcement came a week before Wirischagin is scheduled to appear in Grand Forks court on impaired driving charges related to an incident in Midway in June. Wirischagin is scheduled to appear in court in Grand Forks on Aug. 18 to face charges of failure or refusal to provide a breath sample, and care or control of a vehicle or vessel while impaired. The charges are from June 14 in Midway. According to the the city’s press release Wirischagin is eight months into his third term on council and has made a decision to focus on a career outside of local politics. “It is with the deepest regret that I have to inform you that I will be vacating my seat on council effective immediately, Sunday, Aug. 9, to focus on my career ambitions outside of the council chambers,” Wirischagin said in the press release. “While not an easy decision, it certainly has been one that has been considered even before the previous. My family and I are forever indebted to the City of Grand Forks and its constituents for the three terms on council and for all of your support.” On behalf of the city and council, Mayor Frank Konrad wished Wirischagin the best in his future endeavours and thanked him for his time on council. “Councillor Wirischagin has contributed his time and energy into making Grand Forks an excellent community to settle down in and has

Yet another successful event in Grand Forks
Grand Forks has once again proven we can hold a large scale event. The first CannaFest concert is in the books and by all accounts it was a big success. Sure, there were a few setbacks including the last-minute cancellation of Lou Gramm, the voice of Foreigner. Fortunately, organizers were able to bring in legendary Canadian rockers Harlequin to fill in. The bands were all top notch and brought the crowd back to the early 80s and late 70s. Some may not agree with the cannabis-positive message but that didn’t stop the event from being a big success. With visitors coming in from as far away as 100 Mile House, Vancouver and Calgary, the event was a big injection of out-of-town cash into our local economy. Besides the onsite vendors, local motels, restaurants, bars, grocery stores and more benefitted from the increase in tourists for the weekend. Here’s hoping CannaFest will be back again next year and maybe Grand Forks will attract other top events in the future.

Yes, that geek talking about fonts at a rock concert was me Reckonings DELLA MALLETTE We could call old (I’ll admit to middle-aged) but in terms of the fast-changing technology at a newspaper, I’ve been through some incredible changes. Believe it or not, this technological evolution can inspire some animated conversations between newsmen and women. Which is why I found myself on a Friday night at a baseball park, sitting in a golf cart, with classic rock music blaring, discussing everything from PMTs to typesetters to fonts. Weird, I know, but this business becomes a passion. Most of us, particularly in the editorial and production departments, stay in the business not because of money but because it’s addictive.
I even read an entire book about fonts, I told my golf cart companion. It was fascinating! Just My Type: A Book About Fonts made the bestseller list. It explains how Helvetica and Comic Sans took over the world and who wouldn’t want to read that story! He does, I’m going to lend him my copy. Fonts, often called typefaces, are everywhere: books, magazines, signs, cereal boxes, even on TV and movies for subtitles and closed captioning. A good font is a gold mine if it’s effective. (But just say no to Helvetica and Comic Sans.) There are new fonts all the time, but how a newspaper chooses or changes a font certainly has changed. Today we highlight text, move our mouse up to the top tool bar, and toggle until we find the font we want. It didn’t used to be that easy. When I started in this business in the late 1980s, we didn’t use computers to design our ads or
lay up the pages: we used Compugraphic typesetters. Compugraphic Corporation was at the vanguard of what was then considered to be a revolution in the graphic arts: “cold type.” (If I really were old, I’d date back to the “hot type” days.) It was a large machine compared to today’s computers. It had a wheel inside and two long strips could be attached—those were the fonts and if you wanted a different one, you had to stop the machine, wait for the wheel to stop spinning (ask Shirley what happens in you don’t wait), and then take one off, hang it back on the wall and select another from the extremely limited selection. The biggest difference to today was that when you typed, you saw one line—there was no going back, no making your type bigger and then deciding to tone it down a few point sizes. You had to visualize. If your headline was 48-point type, and you move to a 24-point

I challenge any graphic artist today to an exercise in Compugraphic typesetting. We designed our ads and pages on lined paper. All our elements (graphics were cut out of large books called, of course, “cut books”) were put through a machine that coated the underside with hot wax. My fingertips won’t ever forget that hot wax! I can still feel the weight of the thin snap-blade knife in my hand. The knife, or a similar one with a rounded handle and one blade inserted in the top, was what we used for all our cutting and pasting. With Park in the Park only a few days away, excitement is mounting. This year’s Park in the Park Car Show promises to be the biggest ever with close to 300 vintage cars, trucks, and motorcycles from throughout Western Canada and the United States. Park in the Park goes Sunday, Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. at City Park. Firebells and Fanfare will also be held that weekend, and Park in the Park is proud to host a show of fire apparatus in the park in conjunction with the car show. Park in the Park kicks off for participants on Saturday: a cruise to Greenwood is planned leaving the Extra Foods parking lot at 9:30 a.m. Alongside the vehicles in City Park on Sunday will be many vendors selling a variety of wares, and food and bever-
ages. Park in the Park will feature many different categories and classes with prizes for the best in show. In addition to the usual stock/modified classes for cars, trucks, bikes, imports and trailers, there will be a People’s Choice award and a “Pro’s Pick” category. There is no entry fee for spectators and plenty of shade, so there’s no excuse not to come down and enjoy one of the top car shows in B.C.

We need to bring the riding together and I am good at that.” Independent candidate Brian Gray could not be reached for comment, but in his campaign literature he said he chose to run to “offer Canadians an alternative to the bankrupt and dying City of London/Wall Street Banking Empire and the desperate British/US/NATO axis’ unjustified and unwarranted war drive against Russia and China.” “The underlying issue and critical imperative of my policy platform is for Canada to align with the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) nations and to join the Chinese initiated (AIIB) the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank,” wrote Gray.

Vehicle stolen On July 31 at 8:30 p.m., RCMP received a report of a theft of a 1990 Suzuki Sidekick from a property on Christina Lake. “The vehicle keys had been left in the vehicle,” said Cpl. Richard Lanz. On Aug. 1 the Grand Forks RCMP were notified that the vehicle was located in Trail without any damage. Lanz said the vehicle owner was spoken to about leaving his keys in the vehicle. Trail RCMP apprehended the car thief after a short chase which involved a stolen mountain bike and a brief foot chase. According to Trail RCMP Sgt. Darren Oelke, one officer was injured chasing the male over a steep embankment and the male escaped into Rossland. “The driver then stole a child’s mountain bike and tried to make the escape down the Rossland hill,” said Oelke. “Police caught up with the thief near Warfield and followed him into Trail but he refused to give up. He ditched the bike near Rossland and made his escape into West Trail on foot.” The driver is identified as Clayton Archie Bone, a 28-yearold male from Kimberley. A tip from the public directed police to where Bone was hiding and he was arrested early Sunday morning without further incident. Bone appeared in Nelson Provincial Court Aug. 4 and pleaded guilty to possession of the stolen vehicle, flight from police, and uttering threats to harm a police officer. Bone received 15 months in jail.

Trailer fire On Aug. 6 at 5:46 a.m. police were called to a fire on a travel trailer that was parked in a campground east of Grand Forks. “The back of the trailer started on fire,” said Lanz, who added that the fire appears to be suspicious. “A passerby on the highway noticed the flames and attended to the trailer and woke the person up who was sleeping inside.” There was minor damage done to the back of the trailer. Local man charged in hunting incident Martin (Marty) Thomas of Grand Forks has been found guilty of illegally hunting a bear using bait. The verdict came only a couple of months after he was named B.C.’s top guide outfitter by the Guide Outfitters Association of B.C. (GOABC). Thomas received the Leland Award for top guide at the GOABC convention in Kelowna on March 28, 2015. The Leland Award has been around since 2000 and recognizes professionalism in the ranks of guides in B.C., Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories. Thomas was originally charged on Sept. 12, 2012. He was found guilty on July 9, 2015 at Fort Nelson Law Court. The penalty is a $3,500 fine. He was acquitted of a second charge of possessing the dead grizzly without authorization. Thomas is requesting the return of the dead grizzly, which currently resides in the possession of the local conservation office. The application for Clarification on Bear Hide was granted for Aug. 10, 2015. Thomas was unavailable for comment as he is up north guiding. His wife Marlene told the Gazette she was unhappy with the fact that other publications had published the wrong information. “He was charged not for baiting a bear but for knowing the carcass was there and taking the bear,” she said. “He wasn’t charged with baiting. I don’t know why they put that as a headline.” Marlene told the Gazette that the conservation officers (COs) became aware of the situation after a story appeared in a magazine (Super Slam magazine) about the hunter. “They didn’t know anything until his hunter wrote a story… that’s when the COs were told about that and came and confiscated the bear,” she said. Marlene said that when the COs came by, Marty had already mounted the bear for his client. Marlene reaffirmed Marty did not
bait the bear. “There was a dead carcass in the area that they shot the bear,” she said. “He knew there was a carcass there and that’s what he was guilty of. Just knowing there was a carcass in that area...that’s what he was charged with— not for baiting.” Marlene said her husband would be back in court in August (10th in Fort Nelson) to attempt to retrieve the bear hide for the hunter. Micah Kneller, Fort St. John Conservation
Officer, told the Gazette that the offence occurred in a remote location southwest of Fort Nelson and northwest of Fort St. John. “Marty Thomas, who is an assistant guide, took out a client on a hunt,” he said. “They (the client) shot a moose and harvested it lawfully and all that. The remains were left (a gut pile). They returned to the gut pile to hunt a grizzly bear and eventually shot a grizzly bear on the gut pile.” Kneller said the
The Fun Spot
client returned to the United States and wrote the article for the magazine and it was brought to their attention. “In B.C. it’s illegal to hunt any species of bear with bait,” he said. “That includes non-natural food sources that people place to attract bears, even a carcass that they’ll take into an area to attract a bear. It also includes gut piles and stuff like that that the hunter may not have placed but knows that it’s there.”

What a show!
More than 3500 tickets sold to CannaFest in Grand Forks CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
By any measure, CannaFest was a huge success. With big crowds, hot weather, great performances and very few problems, the classic rock music festival was a big hit. The event sold over 3,500 tickets, which is almost the whole population of Grand Forks. Despite the lofty numbers, the setting at James Donaldson Park was nice and big and concert-goers had plenty of room to move around. There were many highlights among the rock acts which included solid performances from the likes of Jerry Doucette, Prism, Headpins, Lee Aaron and Streetheart. All the bands stayed behind after their sets to sign autographs and pose with fans. All were happy to come to Grand Forks and appreciated the efforts of Chuck Varabioff and the B.C. Pain Society, who put the show on. “It was a wonderful event,” said Darby Mills, lead singer of the Headpins. “The organizer Chuck, a local guy, has done such a wonderful job of taking care of the musicians involved and brought in some wonderful people.” Mills said it was obvious the city was taking a bit of a risk in bringing in such a lofty music festival. “They decided, through the reputation of Chuck, to take the risk and I’m so glad they did,” she said. “It was a great group of Canadian classic rock bands.” About the only negative about the concert was the cancellation of Lou Gramm,
the voice of Foreigner. Gramm cancelled because of health reasons but was replaced by Harlequin. “It was all Canadian and I think it was cool that Chuck decided to keep this a classic rock event because we are slowly a dying breed,” said Mills. “We are all getting old. The crowd tonight was so appreciative. I think it’s really cool to see the young ones here as well.” Mills echoed the sentiment of the CannaFest event about bringing awareness to the healing effects of cannabis. “I think it’s very important that we understand that there are benefits for those who have gone through all the medications that are available through the (pharmaceutical) corporations,” she said. “I personally watched my father benefit from the oils that have come via the organizer of the event.” In additional to all the great music, CannaFest also featured many vendors selling all different kinds of wares. There was also a kids section as well as a separate smoking section and beer gardens. Corporal Richard Lanz of the Grand Forks RCMP said they had no trouble at the event and no arrests. He said that the RCMP were a constant presence at the event. “CannaFest went over very well,” said Lanz. “There were no arrests. Everyone seemed like they were enjoying themselves and having a good time. It was a very well-behaved crowd.” (Clockwise from top left) 1. Sonya Wood poses with members of Harlequin. 2. Fans of all ages enjoyed the perforances. 3. Al Harlow of Prism holds his “axe” in the air during the band’s set. 4. Darby Mills of Headpins was a crowd favourite. 5. Lee Aaron was dressed to the nines for her performance. 6. Derrick Gottfried of Harlequin rocks a solo.

for the Grand Forks Gazette
The Grand Forks Fire Department was formed in 1897 by a group of local businessmen. The group used an old garage until 1900 when a fire hall was built. It was torn down in 1987 and the present fire hall was built on the same property. In the early 1900’s the department had a horse drawn Steam Pumper. It was similar to the one the fire department members are restoring at this time. The first motorized fire truck was received in September 1929. The unit has been restored by the department and is used for parades and fire prevention functions. In 1946 the department acquired a second fire engine through the War Assets Corporation. The unit was an x-Army 1943 Chevy fire engine. Over the years we have seen a major change in fire apparatus. New Fire Trucks were received in 1965, 1977, 1980, 1993, 1997, 2002, and the latest in 2015. In 1941 the fire department acquired approx. 60 acres of land for a racetrack and amusement park. The area became known as Fireman’s Park and was situated where Roxul and the Interfor log yard are today. The park consisted of a large racetrack, grandstand, a large barn and numerous small outbuildings. For many years the fire department members organized the annual fair as well as sponsored shows such as the RCMP Musical Ride. This was done until 1956 when the Grand Forks Fall Fair Society was formed. The Society continued to rent the fairgrounds from the fire department until 1967 when the City Council approached the Fire Department with a proposal to purchase Fireman’s Park for an industrial site. The assessed value at that time was $12,500. In 1953 the fire department raised money to start an Ambulance Service for the area and purchased the first ambulance. Through a variety of raffles and fundraiser they were able to purchase new ambulances in 1959 and 1967. The ambulance service was operated by the fire department volunteers until the late 1970’s when the Provincial Government took the service over. In 1957 the Grand Forks Rural Fire Protection District was formed and they asked the City fire fighters to oper-
This 1944 Bickle Seagrave was in service for the Tadanac Fire Department (later to become Tech Cominco) from 1944 till the mid 1970’s. When it was retired it was sold to Grand Forks Fire Fighter Mike Acres who stored it in his back yard in Grand Forks until he donated it to the Grand Forks Volunteers in 1987. They immediately started a full restoration. This project took about 4 years and over $12,000.

ate the Rural’s new 1957 IHC Fire Engine at fires outside the city boundaries. The engine was housed at the City Fire Hall and the volunteers would respond to fires with either the City truck or the Rural’s depending on the location of the fire. This was done by the volunteers until the Rural formed their own fire fighting crew in 1979. The City of Grand Forks began operating the two departments as one combined fire department again in November of 2006. We now operate out of 5 fire halls with 12 pieces of apparatus and 3 command vehicles and cover a protection area of approximately 150 sq. km. The fire department also raised money through various fundraisers and donations from the community to purchase the “Jaws of Life.” These are used to assist the Ambulance Service in removing patients from automobile accidents in our area. Ace Talarico became the first full time paid Fire Chief for the City of Grand Forks in 1970. Today the fire department consists of a paid Chief and Assistant Chief as well as 49 volunteer fire fighters. In 1944 the department responded to 22 calls for the entire year. Today we respond to an average of 50 calls per month. In 1897 the department was set up to respond to fires. Today our crew is trained for structural fire fighting, wildland fire fighting, medical emergencies, auto extrication, high angle rescue, swift water rescue, confined space rescues, and hazardous material response. The volunteers became interested in the fire department history and in preserving antique fire apparatus in the mid 1980’s under the then Fire Chief, Walter Boles. At that time they began to restore a 1944 Bickle Seagrave which had been in service at the Trail Cominco plant until it was retired. The unit had been purchased by Grand Forks Fire Fighter Mike Acres who donated it to the local volunteers. Since that time they have restored the 1929 Chevy Chemical Truck and have nearly completed restoring a 1901 Steam Pumper that had been rescued from the river bank west of town. The volunteers have also acquired the 1957 IHC Pumper that was the first pumper that the Grand Forks Rural Fire Protection District operated and the 1965 Ford Thibault Pumper that was in service in Grand Forks from 1965 to 1993. 1944 Bickle Seagrave

1957 International Front Mount Pumper This 1957 International Front Mount Pumper was the first Fire Truck the Grand Forks Rural Fire Protection District bought for the newly formed Improvement District. It was housed in the City Fire Hall and ran by the City of Grand Forks Volunteer Fire Fighters until 1978 when 3 new Rural Fire Halls were built and 3 new Saskatoon Pumpers were purchased. The 1957 remained in service until 1998 when it was sold to the Rural Fire Fighters Association for $1.00. During the integration of the two Volunteer Fire Fighter Associations in 2006 the truck was transferred to the new joint association.

1901 Pumper lovingly restored
SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
The Grand Forks Fire / Rescue Volunteers continue to restore this 1901 Waterous Steam Pumper. It was originally a City of Vancouver Fire Pumper working out of their Hall # 3. In the mid 1950s a couple of Grand Forks Fire Fighters found the Pumper on the banks of the Kettle River about 5 miles west of town. It had been used to pump water to a farmer’s field for irrigation. Since no one seems to have ownership of it the Volunteer Association wrote to the B.C. Government, asking permission to remove it and restore it for parades. The Department still has a copy of the letter they received back. The pumper was painted and used in the 1958 B.C. Centennial Cel-
ebration Parade in Grand Forks. The unit then sat in an open air enclosure in Gyro Park until 1998 when the Volunteers once again started a restoration on it. At that time the wooden wheels had deteriorated to the point they had to be completely rebuilt. The 4 wheels were sent to Edmonton and they had all new wooden spokes made in Winnipeg
before remaking the outer rims. To date the Volunteers have spent approx. $15,000.00 on the restoration. The latest expense was the nickel plating of the smoke stack outer shell. The original outer shell was missing when the unit was restored in 1957 so a new one was manufactured in Seattle in 2010 but had not been plated until this spring. 1961 LaFrance Aerial The 1961 100 ft. Aerial Ladder was manufactured by LaFrance Fire Engine, Toronto, Ont. for the Kelowna Fire Department where it served until 1993 when it was retired. Rick Jennens was very interested in acquiring the Ladder Truck as it was the first truck he rode on to a fire as a Kelowna Volunteer. In 1994 it became his first of many fire apparatus for his collection.

Water meter delegations draw packed house DELLA MALLETTE Grand Forks Gazette
With two delegations slated and concerned citizens waiting to hear discussion about smart meters, the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary board room in Grand Forks was full to capacity for its monthly meeting July 30. RDKB takes a stand on health concerns Citing no jurisdiction over smart meters, the regional district will not be sending a letter calling on the government to put a halt to the installation of the meters; however, the district is going to petition the government to recommend a review of Health Canada’s safety code. The motion reads in part: “It is resolved that the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Board of Directors petitions the Premier of British Columbia, the Honourable Christy Clark, the Minister of Health, the Honourable Terry Lake, and the Chief Medical Health Officer for B.C., Dr. Perry Kendall to recommend review of Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 to ensure appropriate protections for our citizens, based on the precautionary principle and a transparent review of the available research. CAO discusses strategic priorities Doug Allin, chief administrative officer for the City of Grand Forks, gave an update of the city’s organization and shared its strategic priorities for 2015-19. He touched on economic growth,
community engagement and initiatives, asset management, identifying strengths, the new Geographic Information System system, and more. He also reminded the board that Grand Forks is one of the few municipalities in B.C. with its own electrical utility.

Initiative to put warning labels on gas pumps explained Matt Hulse, the provincial campaign director for Our Horizon, came before the board to talk about the national non-profit organization’s efforts to work with municipalities to require climate change labels on gas pump nozzles. The images and text on a gas pump nozzle is a similar idea as those on cigarette packages, Hulse explained. Our Horizon is proposing labels with sayings such as: “Warning: Use of this fuel product contributes to smog which may cause asthma and other respiratory problems in children” and “Use of this fuel product contributes to climate change which may put up to 30 per cent of species at a likely risk of extinction.” The initiative is slated to come before the Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention in September.

Christina Lake is a vibrant and active community
The Christina Lake community is a vibrant and active group of residents and seasonal visitors. Over the years Christina Lake has hosted a variety of events from the annual Homecoming celebration to Winterfest. The local businesses, Christina Lake Recreation Commission, community groups and residents come together regularly to provide concerts, pancake breakfasts, spaghetti feeds, a triathlon and much more. The recreation is premium. Obviously beautiful Christina Lake speaks for itself. Summer reads can be returned to any public library in B.C. Are you going to visit somewhere else in B.C. this summer? Worried that your library books are going to come up due while you are away? Well, have no fear because you are able to return your materials borrowed from the Grand Forks and District Public Library to any other public library in B.C., and they will make sure that it gets safely back to us. Also, we will happily take returns of materials from any other B.C. public library and send it back to them. How cool is that? What’s even more exciting is that you can present your Grand Forks and District Public Library card at another public library and borrow their materials, which you can then either return to the same place you borrowed them, or bring them back home with you and return them here. Just be aware that any fines or fees that you accrue from another library needs to be paid to the library you borrowed from. April 25, 1931 – August 15, 2011 We thought of you with love today, But that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday. And days before that too. We think of you in silence. We often speak your name. Now all we have is memories, And your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsafe, With which we’ll never part. God has you in His keeping. We have you in our hearts.

Sun protection for Small Children Even if it isn’t sunny, your baby’s delicate skin can still burn, so it’s vital to protect her. If your baby is younger than six months, keep her out of the sun altogether and stay in the shade. If you have an older baby or toddler, keep her out of the sun between 11 am and 3 pm, which is the hottest part of the day. When your baby is in the sun, dress her in cool cotton clothes that cover her legs and arms. A UV sunsuit is also a good option. Put her in a wide-brimmed hat that shades her face and neck, and sunglasses to protect her eyes from the sun and sand. Before you go in the sun, apply sunscreen thickly to every area of your baby’s skin not covered by clothes or a hat, including her hands and feet. You may find it easier to apply the cream before you get your toddler dressed in the morning. That way, you can be sure you haven’t missed any patches. Use a sunscreen specially formulated for babies and children, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Make sure the sunscreen is a broad-spectrum brand with a four-star or five-star rating. This means it offers UVA and UVB protection, which will be stated on the packaging. Reapply at least every couple of hours and after your baby has played in water, even if the sunscreen is waterproof. www.babycentre.com Success By 6 supports parents and communities in creating healthy, nurturing environments for our youngest children, so that by age 6, they are physically, socially, and emotionally ready to succeed in school. It took awhile but the Grand Forks Border Bruins have found their man. Emery Olauson has been hired as the Bruins head coach and general manager. The 34-yearold coached the Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) last year and was living in the North Carolina city with his wife Lauren when he took the job in Grand Forks. The two are excited to be able to raise their newborn baby in the Boundary. Olauson started his coaching career in Flin Flon in 2013-14 as an assistant with the Bombers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Before becoming a coach, he had played 10 years of professional hockey most recently with the Knoxville Ice Bears of the SPHL. He grew up in Alberta and played his junior hockey in Saskatchewan with the Weyburn RedWings and the Estevan Bruins. Olauson is excited to head back north to take over the reigns of the Border Bruins. He feels the squad has plenty of good talent returning and he expects to add several pieces over the next few months. “We’re having a baby boy here this summer and I was looking out west—I’m from Canmore, Alberta—for coaching jobs,” he said. “I knew about the KIJHL having played junior with some guys who came through there and having coached players who had played there. I was somewhat familiar with the area and I knew how beautiful it was. We were really hoping to come to a small town in Western Canada.”

Olauson was thrilled when he found out he got the job, although he acknowledges that there will be challenges. “I know they’ve had some struggles on the ice and things like that,” he said. “But I think it was a really good fit with what they need in the immediate future to make the turnaround. I think what I have to offer will fill in some gaps for them. I’m relatively young for a coach and I have lots of energy and lots of ideas. We’re looking forward to seeing that energy and those ideas help turn the Border Bruins into a success.” Olauson doesn’t think his young age will be a hindrance. He has had three years of coaching experience and played hockey for 14 years at the junior, university and professional levels. “I consider myself a late bloomer as most junior B players would be,” he said. “I kept driving forward and motivate as best I can. I think I can relate pretty well to the players. I think I know the game pretty well. I do have the energy and passion to be at work every day and keep studying the game.” Olauson, who was hired in May, has already been recruiting and is excited with some of the talent he has coming in as well as the players expected to return. “I expect us be faster and probably a little tougher,” he said. “I think we’ll be better on special teams as well as strong in goaltending. I expect a large recruiting class. Again, I’m excited about the players coming in and those who are returning. I’ve definitely burned up some cell phone minutes this summer but that’s part of the job. Recruiting is more important then ever especially with a young team like us that is going to Continued on page 21

go through some changes.” The Bruins head to training camp from Aug. 28-30 at Jack Goddard Memorial Arena. Olauson expects to see some strong competition for all the roster spots. “I know the cut-down has to happen quickly with a camp as short as ours,” he said. “We are getting right into the swing of things quickly. We’re working hard on establishing depth with our young players. I think we have a great opportunity for 18-year-olds to come into Grand Forks to play.” Olauson said the KIJHL is a great league for players to use as a stepping stone to junior A or even major junior. He expects to have a competitive, well-balanced squad this season. Bruins club president Martin Vanlerberg said the club is fortunate to have found a quality hire at such a late date. “We’re really excited to have Emery and his family come to the great town of Grand Forks,” said Vanlerberg. “He’s looking forward to being a part of the community and seeing these kids in Grand Forks develop as hockey players and as strong citizens.”

Vanlerberg said he and the board of directors are already impressed with how motivated and driven Olauson is. “You can see a difference already through the recruiting,” he said. “He’s not too far away from where these players are. He’ll maybe have a different identity to what we’ve seen in the past. He’ll definitely be able to relate to the players with the background he has.” Vanlerberg is also pleased with the level of communication between Olauson and the board. He adds that there are several very good players already looking at joining the

Bruins. “It’s looks quite promising—the level of players he’s in communication with and they will be coming to the main camp,” said Vanlerberg. “We have players coming in that are really excited about being here and being part of the rebuild.” Bear Bites The Border Bruins are hosting their annual golf tournament fundraiser on Sept. 19 at the Christina Lake Golf Club. The priceless gift of water With all the wonderful, hot weather that we have been experiencing in the Boundary region, we are also experiencing drought-like conditions and it highlights the priceless gift of water. To ensure that we have water available to all, the town of Grand Forks has restricted the use of water. Water is literally life-giving. In order to live, grow and be healthy, plants, crops and animals need water. Without water, gardens in Grand Forks and area would be ruined. Water is also critical for us as humans—it is literally life-giving for us. Our bodies crave water. Without water we would die. We are physical beings but we are more than that. We are also spiritual beings. One of the best ways to describe this is to say that all of us have been created with a God-shaped vacuum. We have been made with a thirst that can only be quenched by God alone. We were created to have a relationship with God and our spirits are restless until they find their rest in Him. In other words, we cannot live a fulfilled, meaningful life until this part of our being is satisfied—a satisfaction that only God can fill. All people are thirsty for God, they just don’t know what it is they are longing for. Jesus very specifically came to earth to fulfill that very longing. One day Jesus and His disciples approached a town in Samaria. They were hot, sweaty and tired from the long walk along the dusty roads. Jesus sits down by the town well and soon a Samaritan woman comes along and Jesus asks her for a drink. She is astonished because she knows that Jews did not like to associate with Samaritans whom they often

but becomes very interested in. Her response is “Sir, give me this water, so that I may stop being thirsty—and not have to come here to draw water anymore!” She was still thinking of physical water that she could physically drink. Jesus was thinking of a greater
need that she had. Jesus says to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I will give him will never be thirsty again. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” We can drink all the
refreshing cool water we wish on these hot summer days but that water cannot quench the inner thirst that each of us has. While it is important that we each do our part in conserving water, we don’t need to worry about the supply of the life-giving spiritual water that Jesus came
to bring. It is available to all who are thirsty for it and ask for it. On another occasion Jesus said “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full.” Have you discovered this priceless life-giving water, a relationship with the living God?
