DIG DEEP — The Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC) led about a dozen volunteers from the Opt (Options for Sexual Health) Clinic as
they dug knapweed from the sides of West Creston Road near the Wildlife Interpretation Centre on Monday evening. The invasive plant interferes with the nesting sites of western painted turtles. “They’ve got a really long taproot,” said Michael Lee of Vast Resource Solutions, “and it will go right through eggs, and even entrap hatchlings.” For the volunteers’ efforts, the Opt clinic received a $250 donation from the CKIPC.

After a flurry of break-ins to homes and businesses in Creston last week, Creston RCMP say they have a “strong suspect”. “We think we know who is likely responsible,” Cpl. Gerry Sliworsky said on Monday. “But we haven’t
been able to locate him.” One victim, whose residence was burgled while she worked in her backyard garden, said police told her he might have fled the area. Her Vancouver Street home was entered through the front door, and some jewelry and an iPhone were stolen. SEE POLICE, PAGE 4

Patients of Dr. Tim Troughton can breathe a sigh of relief, at least temporarily. Dr. Stacey Hoselton will be working as a locum at Family Practice Associates Medical Clinic from September into the spring of 2016, Marilin States told the Advance. Hoselton will be arriving from her home in Ontario with her husband and two young children. “Family Practice Associates will announce when she will begin to take appointments once her start date is determined,” States said. States, who works as a recruiter of medical professionals for the
Creston Valley Health Working Group, said that an increasing number of physicians are taking locum (temporary) positions before determining whether they want to relocate to a community. “At the conferences I attend, I am getting more inquiries about the availability of locum positions,” she said. “Fortunately, our clinics are very co-operative to make that work, in conjunction with Interior Health and other agencies. These professionals are in such great demand it only makes sense that they want to ‘test drive’ a community before committing to living there.”

Douma awarded in N.S., Nations Cup blind golf BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
With first- and second-place Canadian and second-place Australian and world blind golf wins already under his belt, Darren Douma is still on a roll, placing second in his B3 sight category and earning the first overall low net score at the Nova Scotia Blind Golf Association (NSBGA) tournament, and being part of the first-place Canadian team that beat the U.S. in the Nations Cup tournament. In their division (10 per cent sight), Tom Marks of Danville, Pa., shot rounds of 82-86, beating Douma’s 84-89 in the July 29/30 36-hole NSBGA tournament at the Mountain Golf and Country Club near Truro, N.S. “Tommy had me down two strokes after day one,” recalled Douma. “The following day I bounced back to take a two-stroke lead after the first five holes. “We remained all tied up through 12 holes. Then I ran into trouble on

“They would really like me to come and challenge Tommy Marks again,” he said. The offer is certainly a tempting one, providing both a challenge and a chance to spend time with other visually impaired golfers. “As blind and visuallyimpaired players, we forget about our challenges, and we go out there to compete and compete hard,” said Douma. “At the end of the round and day, we are there to have fun with each other. into a bad position all the way to the green, where I finished with a disappointing nine. Unfortunately, this hole put me down five strokes, and Tommy continued to play steady. “In the end, I lost by the five strokes I gave to hole 13.” In the three days leading up to the Nova Scotia tournament, Douma played on the Canadian team in the Nations Cup tournament, taking on American Blind Golf (ABG) players. “Two days were team match play and the final day was singles match play,” said Douma. “In the end, Canada took the Nations Cup 12.5 to 10.” For the Nations Cup, Douma was partnered with Montreal’s Bruno Boucher. “We were a force to be reckoned with,” Douma said. “We dominated our first match so much, they put us together again the second day. We again had a great match where we dominated and won. We said to each other we were the dream team, because it was like a dream. We couldn't do anything wrong. We jelled so well much to the dismay of the U.S. opposition.” Douma attributes at least part of his success to his sight coach, who also worked with him at last year’s Canadian championships. “Don Lynds was a huge help to me again this year coaching for six days,” he said. “He kept me focused because we had great team chemistry.” Having organized his own

Paterson launches second book of historical sketches BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
When Bruce Paterson published Kootenay Cameos: Tales of the West Kootenays a year ago, he spoke of the difficulty he had in selecting which pen and ink illustrations and stories he would include. After all, he had a collection amassed over a period of more than eight years from 1987-1995, during which they were published in the former Kootenay Review.
Now, with success selling the first printing at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, Paterson has released Volume Two of Kootenay Cameos. In it are another 21 finely detailed sketches depicting places of interest from Yahk to New Denver and Sandon. Each illustration is accompanied by a one-pager describing the history of each building, and often interesting anecdotes, as well. “I’ve been very pleased with the response to the first book,”
Paterson said. “And it’s been great fun to chat with visitors at the farmers’ market.” His first selection on Volume Two is the Banker’s House, a 1907 home built for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce manager. It was a pre-fabricated house from the British Columbia Mills, Timber and Trading Company of New Westminster and is one of Creston’s oldest existing buildings. Paterson said one of his motivations for making the sketches in the 1990s was to capture their images before they were torn (or fell) down or succumbed to fire. The Lower Kootenay Band church remains standing, for instance, but has been unused for years and is in poor condition. Who knows how long the 1892 building will remain standing? In his second volume, Paterson also pays tribute to the importance of early transport on Kootenay Lake, with features on the S.S. Nasookin, a sternwheeler that was built in 1913 in the CPR shipyard in Nelson. The upper deck, which was converted into a home, can still be seen just a couple of miles east of Nelson. Paterson also tells the story about S.S. Kuskanook, which he drew from a postcard dated 1913. The ferry was launched in 1906 to accommodate increasing demand for travel between Nelson and Kootenay Landing. Newer buildings are also represented. The popular Salmo Hotel, with its design from a much earlier era, was built in 1981, a tribute to an earlier structure that was destroyed by fire. Paterson is a regular fixture at the farmers’ market, where he is happy to sell both volumes of Kootenay Cameos and chat with visitors about Kootenay history.
A $7 million project to run fibre optic cable to homes and businesses in Creston and portions of Erickson has been a success, Telus spokesman Tony Geheran said while visiting the area recently. Geheran, a Telus president and executive vice-president of broadband networks, said Creston was among 16 B.C. communities to be part of the first rollout of a project that will eventually deliver highspeed fibre optic broadband service to most of the province. “In 2012 we looked at what Telus needed to do to continue its success in the areas we serve,” Geheran said. “To meet customer needs, fibre optics was the right investment for us to make.” Small communities needed large investments, he said, and Telus looked at communities to be “collaborative partners”. Most, but not all, communities responded positively. “We found the Town of Creston to be progressive and ready to participate,” he said. “They have been great partners.” In addition to the economic boost provided by having dozens of employees and contract workers in Creston for several months, some community organizations also benefited. “When we do well in each community we give something back, and we’re pleased to have done just that,” Geheran said. The Creston Valley Public Library received a $5,000 donation, the Creston Valley Gleaners Society got $1,500 and the Creston and District Society for Community Living was given $500. Recipients were chosen from responses by Telus customers. As well, Telus employees participated the corporation’s Day of Giving, volunteering their services in helping to clean
up the former West Creston ferry landing site, where a picnic area is now being created. Included in the broadband project is extension of cellphone coverage to less densely populated areas, including highway corridors. “Coverage to Cranbrook along Highway 3 is nearly complete.” Cellphone service between Creston and Salmo is more problematic, he said, because electrical supplies have to be delivered to towers from the main power line that runs along the mountainside. Installation of a large cell tower can cost more than $500,000 — if power is available.
“When we do well in each community we give something back, and we’re pleased to have done just that.” Tony Geheran Telus spokesman
Geheran said the guideline for “a successful result” in supply fibre optic service to a community means that 30 per cent of businesses and residents sign on for Telus service during the installation period, and that the percentage increases to 50 per cent within a year. “We hit our 90-day target in only 21 days,” he said. “We are now at a 47 per cent market share. We have had an exceptional response throughout B.C.” Geheran was one of a half-dozen Telus representatives who met with Mayor Ron Toyota and town manager Lou Varela on July 28. Afterward, they met with Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce members to deliver their message that the project has been a success.

Crestonites’ kindness appreciated To the Editor: My partner and I have always enjoyed the motorcycle ride from Trail to Creston to Crawford Bay to Nelson and back home. It’s part of our summer fun to include that ride at least twice a year. However, Aug. 1 gave us even more reason to relish our brief stops in Creston and make them even longer in the future. It all started rather disappointingly when we had a flat tire midway between Creston and Wynndel. To make matters worse, it was approaching 5 p.m. on a Saturday of a long weekend. That told me there would be no shops open and odds were it wasn’t going to be until Tuesday before I could even get someone to repair the tire. But the disappointment quickly dissipated thanks to the kindness of so many people. There were a few fellow motorcyclists who stopped and offered use of their phone and patch kits but my tire was beyond patching and help was soon to arrive. Before we enlisted the help of a tow truck, a kind soul, who had an air compressor on his vehicle, offered to follow us to Creston and refilling the tire at the first sign that it was losing air. He gave my partner a ride while I navigated the motorcycle into Creston with only one extra stop to replenish the air in my tire. The driver then led me directly to Koots Motorcyle Shop where I expected to leave my bike and some sorry note pleading for help when he reopened his business on Tuesday. But I had barely put the kickstand down when the owner, Don, pulled up. He took one look at us and, even though it was now 5:30 p.m. on the Saturday of a long weekend, opened up his shop and we rolled the bike in. Don told us to go get a bite to eat and relax while he tackled our flat. Changing a flat on a motorcycle is no quick feat. It involved not only removing the tire but saddlebags, brakes and the other chrome attachments surrounding the tire. But Don didn’t care what time it was, what day it was or that he hadn’t even had supper yet. He saw fellow riders in need of help and obliged with a smile and reassuring words. He recommended a restaurant across the street — Jimmy’s Pub and Grill — and told us how long it would take and he would do his best to get us back on the road. In the meantime, we assured friends and family back in Trail we were being taken care of by Creston’s guardian angels and asked them to look after our pets, who were expecting us home before suppertime. With things well on the homefront and Don looking after our ride, words couldn’t express the gratitude in our hearts. Less than two hours prior we were stranded on the side of the road wondering, “What’s our next step?” Don got us back on the road and accepted payment and a hearty hug from both of us. We made it back home later that evening and continue to spread the word of the generosity of the Creston folks. I believe small gestures make a big difference and while these two good

deeds were large gestures, we are indebted for their generosity and vow to continue paying it forward. I think both men who helped us on Saturday would want it that way. Thanks again, Creston! You are truly a gem in the Kootenays. Guy Bertrand Trail
To the Editor: It’s time to vote for a government that will take this climate-change crisis seriously. Recent forest fires, windstorms and early water shortages are being experienced here in the Kootenays. Globally, climate change is horrendously apparent by the heat deaths, famine, catastrophic flooding, slides and desperate people trying to save their lives. Each of we individuals is capable of mitigating climate change. Yes, we can conserve water; however, that is putting a bandage on a wound that will not heal. We must heal the cause of the wound — fossil fuel use and governance that favours the few wealthy over all of us common people. Neither the Conservative nor Liberal international corporate business representative parties take climate change seriously. Fossil fuel extraction, manufacturing and shipping, and the war economy based on acquiring foreign fossil fuel resources is the base economy of the Conservative and Liberal governments. The money generated from the giveaway of our Canadian resources masses unethical wealth for the international few and results in austerity and overwhelming economic and environmental devastation for the majority of Canadians. We have witnessed that their promises of a thriving economy based on fossil fuel are false. Voting for a science-guided New Democrat government in collaboration with the Green Party, with voice-for-allparties participation through the proportional representational voting system, will create a job-rich sustainable economy mitigating and adapting to climate change for all of us. The Conservatives and Liberals have had their chance and they have failed us. Life is getting more insecure and expensive under their governance. Weather chaos doesn’t exist in their world; all that matters is short-sighted fossil fuel dollars generated for a few wealthy — climate change and citizen strife be damned. The Conservatives and Liberals have created a sad, fearful world, full of war profits, terrorism and hardship. Seize your opportunity to participate in a democratic governing system where each of us can make a difference in providing solutions for climate change and enrich our local communities, determining what jobs need to be accomplished by local employment. Reject being victims to government sanctioned, foreignowned, foreign worker and free-trade corporations determining our local future. You are important because you can vote. Please vote for peace and prosperity, and for local governance that is quick to identify and prevent crisis. Susan Eyre Yahk
To the Editor: In 1983, a few caring women, concerned about feeding the hungry in this community, started working together to feed those in need. There being an abundance of fresh food in our valley, they set out to distribute the excess, going so far as to dig potatoes in local fields to share with others. Over the years, it grew and grew to being the only food bank in B.C. that depended only on the generosity of our townspeople. In 1984 it became Creston Valley Gleaners Society, a registered charity complete with bylaws, guidelines and policies. For years, a variety of volunteers ran Gleaners successfully, providing for the food bank, plus over $60,000 annually for other charities in town. Then, a few years ago, some executive members decided that this was now a big business and should be treated as such. Volunteers no longer had any say, and very dominating individuals took control. Members stopped attending meetings, management developed new programs, purchased equipment and built more buildings, and bylaws and guidelines were discarded, changing the whole internal concept of the society. For years, a simple thing like having a tree removed to make room for a shed to be built was a decision reached by all volunteers, and a 50-cent increase in wages for maintenance was a shared decision, along with any spending over $2,500. Volunteers were treated like shareholders, earning a say by the investment of their time; they were proud of the work they did. Now volunteers are treated like paid employees without benefits. Many long-term experienced volunteers were either terminated or left because their contributions were no longer appreciated, some were displaced rudely and uncaringly, even with threats of RCMP removal, thoroughly humiliated by an organization they gave their best to. The public dismissal of the previous elected president was atrocious and not worthy of this great organization. To date from the November volunteers phone list, 15 people have left — 120 years, almost 50,000 hours of experience, gone. And then they are crying to the public for more volunteers. Something has to be done to give the volunteers their sense of “part” — part of an organization that cares, part of a warm welcoming family. This is not the military! In our opinion, Gleaners should return to the happy and friendly place it used to be, where volunteers loved to spend their time even if they only had a couple of hours a week to give. We mention this because one woman having volunteered for 19 years was let go for that very reason — she could not work a four-hour shift. Treat volunteers like they make a difference, and they will! Black and white and red in the face
One of the hazards of newspaper work is that one’s errors — typos, “facts”, misspellings — are put out for all to see. And make fun of. Goodness knows I have made more than my share over the several decades I have been in this business, but there is special joy in seeing that others aren’t immune. I laughed aloud while scanning through an email from Pastor Ian Cotton, who routinely passes on messages intended to amuse. The latest was especially appropriate — a selection of newspaper headlines that left me grateful. There, but for the grace of God, go I. “Diana Was Still Alive Hours Before She Died”, screamed the first clipping. While it is tempting to put this off as a headline written in a rush just before the offending paper went to press, the teaser below suggests that proofreading just didn’t happen in this case. “A series of previously unseen CCTV (closed circuit television) images have revealed that Diana was alive and well before she was tragically killed in Paris, ten years ago.” I’m no expert, but I expect that’s pretty much the case for all of us, being alive before we die. The next images were a little on the naughty side, but still… “Republicans Turned Off by the Size of Obama’s Package”. No surprise there. They have been turned off by everything else about Obama. “Tiger Woods Plays with Own Balls, Nike Says”. Hmmm, I thought. He’d have had a tough time making that argument stick during his divorce proceedings. Sometimes, as this 1999 headline suggestions, the obvious simply cannot be over-stated: “Statistics Show that Teen Pregnancy Drops Off Significantly After Age 25”. Sounds like a summer job for a statistics student, coming up with an in-depth analysis like that. Imagine the sighs of relief from readers who are parents of young people in
those difficult teen years. “Federal Agents Raid Gun Shop, Find Weapons”. I wonder if this is the headline that led to the French saying. Quelle surprise.
Lorne Eckersley Sometimes the obvious simply cannot be ignored. Like when the Toronto Star reported in 1996: “Marijuana Issue Sent to a Joint Committee”. If you have a problem, let the experts look after it, I suppose. And, speaking of the obvious, how about “Homicide Victims Rarely Talk to Police”. Or anyone else, for that matter. A newspaper called the News&Observer (I am not sure why the banner has no spaces. Perhaps it is so readers don’t have high expectations about the content) reported on the front page that “17 Remain Dead in Morgue Shooting Spree”. Frustrating and sad for families, doctors and everyone involved, I am sure. They had such high hopes. As fan of crime fiction and television shows, I am fascinated by unanticipated twists. I would not have seen this one coming: “Worker Suffers Leg Pain after Crane Drops 800-pound Ball on his Head”. I suppose the sudden addition of nearly a half-ton of weight might be hard on one’s knees, but even my vivid imagination can’t produce a picture of how this became part of the story. It wasn’t enough that the crane dropped an 800-pound ball on this guy’s head, and that he survived? No great detective work was needed to reach this conclusion: “Bridges Help People Cross
Rivers”. Just as planned, I am guessing. But could the following have really come as a surprise? “City Unsure why the Sewer Smells”. The mystery could probably be solved by checking its contents. But then I’m not an engineer, either. “Study Shows Frequent Sex Enhances Pregnancy Chances”. But by how much, I wonder. I hope Creston town council doesn’t embrace this idea: “Meeting on Open Meetings is Closed”. Unless, of course it also holds an open meeting about closed meetings. My favourite of the bunch just might be “Hospitals Resort to Hiring Doctors”. This might have come following a study to determine why patients were dying at unusually high rates. But I do admire this creative excuse: “Man with 8 DUIs Blames Drinking Problem”. “But I only drink before I drive, your honour. And when I’m thirsty.” “The lady doth protest too much, methinks,” Queen Gertrude said in Hamlet. But not to the same extent as described in this headline: “Parents Keep Kids Home to Protest School Closure”. Of course, sometimes it is obvious that the writer is simply having fun, and who wouldn’t, when “The Bra Celebrates a Pair of Historic Milestones this Year”. (Look at that pair of milestones. Va-va-voom!) If there was any doubt the sub-headline carries on with the theme: “After 100 years of innovation, the device still holds up”. Okay, so none of these quite measure up to my all-time favourite. But the New York Post’s 1983 classic is simply not to be matched. “Headless Body in Topless Bar” is the result of a clever writer with an unusual story to tell. Thanks to Ian for the laughs. Keep them coming! Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

Special needs workers learn skills at Spectrum Farms BY FRANCES COLLISON
Spectrum Farms is located at 849 Erickson Rd. across from Centennial Park. It is also right next to the Therapeutic Riding Program. There are huge gardens, greenhouses, gorgeous trees, pretty green grass and beautiful flowers on-site. Every year, people with special needs are hired to grow and harvest fruit and vegetables for the markets, raise free-
range chickens, and raise sheep for food and wool. At the Wednesday on-site markets and the downtown Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, Spectrum Farms has its stand set up for you to buy fresh produce straight from its gardens. It sells fresh tender, chewy, bagels for you to eat at home. These are made twice weekly at a local cooking program.

Spectrum Farms keeps sheep to sell the wool. It also has baby lambs for meat and to increase the herd. It will soon get a donkey to help run with the sheep.
With your support many things could happen for the farm, such as expanding the housing choices and job opportunities. The Kootenay Region Association for Community Living (KRACL) recognizes and supports the rights of all people with disabilities to a
quality life in the community. Spectrum Farms relies on volunteers to keep it running and is looking for more volunteers to help out. Your support keeps it sustainable. Taxdeductible donations to KRACL are gladly accepted. Let’s see how we can make a difference!

Celts and Vikings offers glimpse into ancestry BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
A visit to the Celts and Vikings store in Crawford Bay is about more than simply shopping — it may also be a chance to find out about your family’s distant past. And owner LaurieLee Mills is delighted to share what she knows. “I just noticed that Caucasians don’t know their own background,” she said. “For me, it’s

about helping others learn about their ancestors.” In many cases, those ancestors were, of course, Celts and Vikings, names that describe more than just a specific group or nationality. “It’s more of a style of belief and artwork,” said Mills. “But if you put up borders, they are Irish and Scottish, and Vikings are all the Scandinavian people.” Born in U.S.A., Mills moved to Canada when she was two, and lived in Saskatchewan, B.C. and Alberta before deciding to give Crawford Bay a try after hearing about artisans such as a blacksmith, broom maker and weaver. “Those are all ancient occupations, so I thought I’d fit right in because I’m a leathersmith,” she said. The 1611 Highway 3A shop is Mills’ first permanent location; she began selling in the 1990s and has had an online store, as well as booths as comic and entertainments expos. Her store offers home decor, jewelry, herbs, hats made by her son, live action role-playing (LARP) costumes and nearly any Celt- or Viking-related movie. Mills’ own creations are there, too, from leather drums to walking staffs to drinking horns to masks — and together, they add up to a unique experience for visitors in the rural community. “They’ll come in and they'll actually squeal,” Mills said. “They get so excited.” There’s more to the Celts and Vikings experience, though. Mills also has trivia, historical information and mythology posted around the store, and what may seem like fantasy today was simply those early peoples’ way of explaining what was going on around them. “The myths sounds farfetched, but they’re symbols for an eclipse or a storm,” she said. “Our ancestors’ beliefs

are parallel to the First Nations. For some reason, Rome influenced everyone, and they took on that. … “Just like the First Nations, you shouldn’t umbrella them under one belief. Every tribe had its own gods. They were on Earth and you could feel them.”
Brian Lawrence
And there’s always more to learn — and customers can be sure Mills will pass on what she knows. “It’s like you hear the bagpipes or listen to Celtic music or read a poem by your ancestors, and you want to learn more,” said Mills. “The more I study, the more I’m fascinated.”

Closer look at two disorders
The ages from 12 to 24 are challenging for almost all youth. The biological, social, physical and psychological path to adulthood is not easy, even under the best of circumstances. But coupled with that tough journey is the fact that 75 per cent of all mental health disorders first show up in these teen/ young adult years, too. For Dr. David Smith the majority, the mental health issue is apt to be mild to moderate anxiety or depression; both are highly treatable. A number of other very important mental health issues, however, also tend to arise first in the teen years. Here is some general information and links to resources for two specific issues: eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In all cases, if you suspect your child might be suffering from a specific condition, talk to your family doctor or contact the Child and Youth Mental Health clinic provided by the Ministry of Children and Family Development in your nearest community. Call Service BC at 1-800-661-8773 to find the nearest MCFD office to you. Eating disorders: The transition from adolescence to adulthood is particularly risky for the development of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). An estimated 0.9 per cent of young women aged 12 to 24 will develop AN, while about 1.5 per cent of young women develop BN. While young women are three times more likely to develop these disorders, young men in recent years are increasingly showing to have eating issues. While our societal obsession with thinness may set the scene, genetic risk factors, as well as underlying anxiety, perfectionism and self-esteem issues, are thought to combine to trigger the disorders. Once anorexia starts and the body gets into starvation mode, the brain chemistry changes. As well, the body’s dehydration, altered electrolyte balance and poor nutritional status can lead to heart rhythm issues and other organ function problems. The goal in treating anorexia is to re-feed the person to a healthier weight, and then treat the disordered thinking behind the condition, with one or more of the most effective treatments. These treatments include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), family-based therapy and dialectic behavior therapy (DBT). Re-feeding and psychotherapy may cooccur once the person is progressing to a healthier weight. With bulimia, along with CBT, antidepressant medication has been shown to be helpful. In both conditions, medications may be helpful if there is a co-occurring mood or anxiety disorder, as is often the case. Symptoms of AN to look for in your teen include rapid or significant weight loss, food restriction and obsession with calories or exercise. For BN, weight loss may not be very apparent, but your teen may go to the washroom immediately after eating and run the water. You may see evidence of vomiting in the toilet bowl. Since anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness, it is important to seek help at the first signs. For more information and to see a full listing of provincial programs, including the Provincial Specialized Eating Disorders Program for Children and Adolescents at BC Children’s Hospital, as well for videos and other helpful information, visit Kelty Eating Disorders at keltyeatingdisorders. ca. Another source for information is the National Eating Disorders Information Centre (nedic.ca). Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): Obsessions are repetitive, intrusive and unwanted thoughts that cause the affected youth great anxiety. Compulsions are the actions or the rituals that he or she must go through to reduce the anxiety caused by the obsessive thoughts. A very common OCD obsession is about contamination or germs, with the compulsion being the need to hand wash repeatedly or avoid any surface, individual or situation where germs might be present. Another common OCD obsession is the fear that something terrible will happen unless the youth takes a specific ritualistic action, like

Entering an enlightened mind
In the next section of his essay, “Mountains and Rivers Sutra”, 13th century Zen master Eihei Dogen refers to koans, or traditional Zen stories that appear nonsensical. In all of his writing, Dogen’s main purpose is to be helpful. Koans such as “green mountains are always walking” are also helpful because they are companions on the path that continually remind us that we are awesome, just as we are. We don’t have to do anything to be awesome. Because we can’t use ordinary logic to figure out koans, they break us out of habitual mind. You can be stuck in an old way of thinking and they will suddenly pop, unbidden, into awareness as a reminder of how awesome this life actually is. Koans present only a fragment of reality, and if we let go of our tendency to make sense of everything, the koan imagery can break us out of our ordinary idea of time. This is crucial because otherwise, we have no answer to anyone in deep despair, or who is dying, because despair and death just don’t
make sense. To understand these facts of life, you have to step into the realm that is beyond common sense, into the realm of the impossible. And Dogen, as well as the koans, invites us to see that the impossible is possible. Buddha was faced with the same problem as Dogen. He considered the suffering that comes from old age, disease and death, realized a way to transcend it, and then wondered how he could Kuya Minague express the full significance of his realization. He decided that explanations wouldn’t cut it, so he developed teachings that made sense of old age, disease and death, and taught practices that could lead us to reducing suffering and increasing happiness. Any one of us can study his teachings and try to put them into practice. But when we do that we enter a process that will lead us to full realization of enlightenment, which is also the realization that, at depth, our human life is unexplainable. The ancient Zen koans and Dogen’s “Mountains and Rivers Sutra” are not attempts to explain the unexplainable.
A Zen'sEye View
counting, checking or placing items in a specific order. Genetic risk factors plus an environmental trigger are thought to set off the illness, which tends to run in families. One environmental trigger that may be linked to sudden onset OCD symptoms in some susceptible children is a recent infection with Streptococcus A bacteria (Strep throat). This burgeoning, but controversial area of research may yield more insights in future years. Treatment with antidepressant-types of medication plus exposure response prevention therapy — a specific form of cogni-
tive behavioural therapy that features gradual exposure to the issue causing the obsessive thoughts and compulsions — has been shown to have success with some individuals. Left untreated, however, OCD can be very debilitating. The longer the OCD goes on, the harder it is to treat. Again, if you are worried about possible signs of OCD in your child, see your family doctor or the MCFD CYMH clinic in your region. They may refer your child to specialized services, such as psychiatric services or the specialized OCD program at BC Children’s Hospital. For more, see ocdbc.ca, www.keltymentalhealth.ca or

This is why we can’t penetrate their meaning with ordinary thinking. These writings are an attempt to help us enter enlightened mind, that is, a state of mind that transcends ordinary thinking so we can experience a brief moment of freedom from seeing the world though our own desires and opinions. We naturally think that everything has to make sense. The reality expressed in koans and in Dogen’s writing help us reach a stage where things don’t have to make sense in an ordinary way. Only then does the depth of life and death make real sense, a sense that includes and yet is beyond common sense. Suggested practice: Memorize the phrase “green (or blue) mountains are always walking” and, during your day, repeat it silently to yourself as you would a mantra. Notice what kinds of understanding and inner experience this practice evokes. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Sakura-ji, Creston’s zendo. This column is part of a long essay on an essay by 13th century Zen master Eihei Dogen and is inspired by the teaching of Norman Fishcher. For more information, Minogue can be reached at 250-428-6500, and previous columns are available at www.zenwords.net.

Miklos (Nickolas) Nemeth July 25, 1931 ~ July 29, 2015
Miklos “Nickolas” Nemeth of near Wynndel, British Columbia, passed away at Edmonton General Hospital on July 29, 2015 having just turned 84 years old. Nick was born in Miskolc, Hungary on July 25, 1931 to Margit Tompos and Miklos Nemeth. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 and lived in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where he met his loving wife, Giselle Herczeg, also a recent Hungarian immigrant. They married on August 31, 1957 and were blessed with 3 wonderful children. Nick worked at the U of S for 20 years as a groundskeeper and foreman, and finally as a property manager until he retired in 1991. He and his wife relocated to a property close to Wynndel, B.C. where they enjoyed the great outdoors living on the mountainside. He had a true love of nature and enjoyed hiking and exploring in the wilderness. Nick will be sadly missed by his loving wife of almost 58 years, Giselle; his daughters Lianna Winters (Brent) and Cynthia Disney (Bruce); his grandchildren Michael (Teresa), Joanna, Shirees, Emilia, Ryan and Cody; great-grandchildren Zoe and Tristin and extended family members in Hungary. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his sister Margot Kiss and his son Nicholas Nemeth. A private family service will be held.

The Great Northern’s Kaslo and Slocan Railway, which owned the townsite property, planned to use it as the terminus of their Bedlington and Nelson line, and certainly wouldn’t accept the name of a rival company’s contractor.

The naming of Kuskonook (or Kuskanook) is intriguing on so many levels that we’ll devote a few installments to it. The town near the south end of Kootenay Lake came to life during railway construction in 1898. It was previously — and for a while, simultaneously — known as Goat River Landing, Armstrong’s Landing and Kalama. It’s hard to know which name came first. The earliest mention of Armstrong’s Landing was in the Nelson Miner of Jan. 8, 1898: “The CPR is opening a route to Fort Steele by the new wagon road from Armstrong’s landing on Kootenay river.” Goat River Landing and Kalama were both first mentioned four days later in the Kootenaian. They weren’t big on Kalama either, though a post office application had apparently been filed under that name. When president Daniel J. Munn and chief engineer John Hamilton Gray moved in to lay out the townsite, they chose yet another name. Next: Kuskonook vs. Kuskanook. This is 107th in a semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names by Nelson Star editor Greg Nesteroff.

The Bard is back! Following last month’s highly successful production of the melodrama The Great Ice Cream Scheme, Footlighters Theatre Society will continue its 21st season with Shakespeare in the Park (Or Something Like It) VI, running at 6 p.m. Aug. 20-22 at Millennium Park. “We keep getting requests to bring it back,” said president Brian Lawrence. “It’s a wonderful venue for a production like this, so we’re excited to return to the park.” This sixth production will continue the theme set by Gail Kitt,

As always, the audience is encouraged to bring a meal or snacks to eat during the show; the Fork food truck will be on-site to serve dinner at the park. The season will include two more plays, the farcical comedy Nana’s Naughty Knickers in December, directed by Gary Atha, and the drama Other Desert Cities Frank Goodsir (a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama) in March, direct- Elizabethan dancers in the 2010 edition of Shakespeare in the Park (Or Something Like It). ed by Lawrence.
