The families of Bella Webb, nine, and her seven-year-old friend Marley den Braber, live in condos on 198th Street and are concerned about speeders on the stretch from 56th Avenue to 53rd Avenue, despite several signs saying the speed limit is 30 km/hr on that street. SPCA seizes 57 animals The SPCA is looking for help with 57 animals seized from a Cloverdale-area property. BC SPCA special constables removed 35 dogs, 16 horses, and six cats from the property Tuesday, and took them into care. An animal cruelty investigation is still ongoing. The agency is now asking for donations to help care for the animals, and for people who could provide them future homes. The price tag for the animal care will be about $20,000.

SAFETY
Extra cars dangerous Heavier traffic on a quiet street has parents worried. HEATHER COLPITTS hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
Parents who live along 198th Street between 53rd and 56th Avenue say their street has become a raceway since it become a detour for the 200th Street construction project. Kari Brown has lived on the street for seven years and has never felt so unsafe. “With a school at one end and a park at the other, it’s not a safe place for going faster,” she said. Lora Katchmar is concerned someone is going to be hurt. The two women note that
the high density developments mean there’s many families in the area. Both have had near misses. “I almost got hit coming out of the garage a couple of times,” Brown said. Katchmar, a six-year resident of the street, said she had a vehicle speed past her, coming within a couple of inches Friday when she was by her parked car. She said the area is clearly marked. “They’ve got a sign up at the Montessori school saying 30 [km/hr],” she noted. There’s a flashing signboard that displays speeds at about 55th Avenue and the playground sign north of 53rd Avenue for Brydon Park. “I’ve contacted the City of Langley,” Katchmar said. “I’ve contacted the traffic control for the police. What’s it going to take?”
Metro Vancouver worked with a consultant to develop the traffic diversions for this project and does welcome input from the public, according to Bob Cheng, Metro Van’s lead senior engineer. “We are aware,” he said of the safety concerns. Metro Vancouver has tried to keep people informed throughout the project with notices sent around the neighbourhood, traffic reports in broadcast media and other measures. The LED sign board displaying people’s speeds was “to remind vehicles to slow down and use their judgement.” Cheng said they will do more if residents have safety concerns. “We’ll work with the City to see what else we can do to make that better,” he said.
Last year they helped 300 kids in this community. Donations can be dropped off during August at Gateway, 5787 Langley Bypass, or at any Langley Starbucks. Cash donations are also welcomed. To get more information about the annual school supply drive, go to gatewayofhope.ca (under the services link) or call 604-514-7675.

200TH STREET PROJECT
Sewer work moving along A lack of rain helped project. The dry weather this summer means the 200th Street water and sewer upgrade project in Langley City is on schedule.
The lack of significant rain allows the joint Metro Vancouver/Langley City project to progress well. Metro Vancouver is upgrading the regional sanitary sewer system within the City.

Bill Noble and his 1932 Ford Highboy Roadster.
Roadster roars Name: Bill Noble What is your current ride? 1932 Ford Highboy Roadster First car? 1955 Chevy two-door wagon. Worst car? 1973 International pickup. Drove it to the (B.C.) Interior and broke down every couple hundred miles. Longest project, start to finish? The second build on my 1933 Ford three-window coupe. Started 1980, finished 1992. What makes you reach for the swear jar? Parts that won’t fit the way they are supposed to, especially if it is supposed to be easy. What’s your perfect drive? A long winding road in a car that never runs out of gas. If money was no object, what car would be in your garage tomorrow? A better version of what I have now or a ‘33 Ford three-window. Need for speed or quiet country road? A quiet country road is good for carving some fast curves, but all out drag race is great as well. Are you a regular at Langley Good Times Cruise-In, and why or why not? I come out in morning to have quick walk through to look at cars. I don’t enter my car because I don’t want to be stuck there all day. Which is better – driving a car or working in the garage? Driving is the point but getting a project done the way you wanted it is quite satisfying. > Read more at langleyadvance.com

The $10 million project, called Carvolth Trunk Sewer No. 2, involves the construction of a new sewer pipe along the right-of-way from Fraser Highway to 57A Avenue, along a portion of 57A, along 200 Street from 57A to Michaud Crescent, then along the BC Hydro right-of-way to 53 Avenue. The City has partnered with Metro Van to do some upgrading of water, sanitary and storm water utilities that run beneath 200 Street between 50 Avenue and Fraser Highway. Once the underground work is done, the full width of 200 Street will be repaved from 50 Avenue to Fraser Highway. The underground work, installing water lines and sewers, should be done by the end of August or early September, said Bob Cheng, Metro Vancouver’s lead senior engineer on the project. When the crews opened up the ground between Fraser Highway and 53rd Avenues, they didn’t find any surprises that hindered the work. “The ground was pretty much what we expected,” Cheng said. The water lines are tied in already. Still to do is the tie in of the sewer lines and one water transmission line. Bypass measures were put in place so people didn’t experience disruptions when the water lines were tied into the system and will also be in place for any remaining water and sewer tie ins. “There won’t be service disruptions,” he noted. Cheng added that the residents of the area may have experiences overnight noise from the pumps and bypass system but there’s been limited overnight construction work. The project has meant the section of 200th Street and the sidestreets connecting to it have been closed or partially closed to motorists since spring. Paving will be done after the tie ins and is expected to be done next month, depending on the weather.

Woman dies while swimming The victim worked at a Fort Langley restaurant. DAN FUMANO Special to the Langley Advance
The deep, frigid waters of Harrison Lake claimed a young life over the weekend for the third time this summer. A young woman died Friday at about 7 p.m., in what B.C. Coroners Service spokeswoman Barb McLintock described as a “swimming incident.”
The identity of the young woman who died Friday had not been released by the coroners service Monday, pending notification of family members. But over the weekend, a memorial was set up for her at Beatniks Bistro, the Fort Langley restaurant where she worked. Her manager, Angela Hazelton, said the young woman “was a beautiful soul.” Two Vancouver men drowned in Harrison earlier this year, prompting an awareness campaign by their friends and family members. - Dan Fumano is a Vancouver Province reporter

the furniture, including a brown leather three-chair recliner set and a custom built table were also taken. A Kawasaki motorcycle was among the stolen goods. “Although the majority of the items are everyday type items that could easily be found in most of our homes, the sheer volume of items taken at one time stands out,” said Const. Craig van Herk, a spokes-
person for the Langley RCMP. The owners noted that some of their stolen items were marked with serial numbers that will aid police if any of the items turn up in the future. Candidates can plant signs Debates may not happen until October. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
Election signs are starting to pop up around the two Langley ridings, but different local bylaws mean different quantities of signs. In Langley Township, signs are allowed on the sides of roads, subject to
not blocking the sightlines of cars or pedestrians. In Langley City, there are only two spots where candidates from the Cloverdale-Langley City riding can put up signs – on 200th Street under the BC Hydro transmission towers, and along the side of the Langley Bypass next to the Salvation Army’s Gateway of Hope. The Gateway may talk to candidates about exactly how many signs they can
put up, said executive director Jim Coggles, but those discussions haven’t happened yet. Due to the long campaign, signs could be up for two and a half months. In the Township, signs must be cleared away by four days after the election, and in the City seven days. In both communities, local residents can put up signs on their property. Signs from several local candidates began appearing in Langley this week.

Too hot to not have a real debate
K
Canadian debates I’d rather see
L
ast week’s debate was… ugh. I mean, it was fine. None of the four federal party leaders spontaneously combusted, no one started barfing pea soup and rotating their head 360 degrees, the ground did not open up to swallow them, and Gilles Duceppe wasn’t there. But other than that, it was pretty dull. Yeah, we can talk about the ratio of actual policy to argument, and the degree to which they were charismatic, stiff, annoyingly off topic, and evasive. I don’t want to base my vote on this kind of format. Frankly, where are the debates for someone like me, who is actually going to read party platforms and decide based on those? I don’t need to see people have a genteel bickerfest for two hours! So here are some debate formats I’d rather see, which will be more fun for those of us who have either A) already made up our minds or B) will be making them up based on something other than who can hurl the best veiled insults. • Defence: Risk Tournament, presented by the Canadian Forces. Each candidate gets an outlandish faux-military uniform complete with bottle-cap medals, shako hats, cutlasses, and jodhpurs. Then they are packed into the basement of a games store and play multiple rounds of Risk, each taking turns starting in Australia. The winner
gets to wear a special medal declaring them World Conquerer for the rest of the campaign. • Debating Skills: Best Episode Ever. Candidates must select their favourite episode of Star Trek and defend their choice using well-researched arguments, including defending their choice of Kirk vs Picard vs Sisko MATTHEW vs Janeway. • The Economy. All four candidates are given the amount of money the average single mother with two children has to spend per month, and must work out a budget that includes food, daycare, transportation, rent, and utilities. Part two involves doing the actual grocery shopping while minding two sticky, tired children. • Foreign Affairs: With nothing but a compass, a Swiss army knife, and a chicken salad sandwich, each candidate is dropped at a random location somewhere on the planet, and must return to Canada without starting a diplomatic incident. Bonus points for anyone who learns some of the local language along the way. Candidates who do not return will not move on to the next round. • Democratic Reform. All candidates (literally all of them,
Painful Truth
im Campbell was infamously quoted (or misquoted) as saying that a 47-day election was no time to discuss serious issues. Fortunately, we are in the early days of an election campaign that is almost twice that long, and will stretch on into late October. It’s also unusual to have an election campaign during the height of summer, when the weather is often top of mind. So let’s have a debate about global warming. Not whether or not it exists, which has been thoroughly established. There is a worldwide scientific consensus, and every major political party accepts that it is happening, whether grudgingly or not. There is also ample anecdotal evidence in the form of temperature records that have fallen by the score across B.C. We also have the raging wildfires and water restrictions to show us what global warming will mean for us on a local level. We need to determine what the best course of action is towards change. There are dozens of options, including changing the way we generate power, increasing energy efficiency, tax incentives, more spending on public transit, and changes in urban planning. Depending on how we choose to proceed, we could find ourselves in a future with electric cars springing up everywhere, as in Norway, and with solar farms popping up across the Prairies, or we could pioneer a new generation of safe, efficient nuclear power projects, or we could simply hunker down and concentrate on using less energy and using what we do create more efficiently. Any of those options are better than our current course, which is barely better than nothing. Our major opposition parties may be willing to attack the government on the environment, but they are still following rather than leading the debates on energy and climate change. As usual, it’s up to Canadians to push for the changes we need in Ottawa. – M.C.
from all 338 ridings) are stranded on a desert island for three weeks and must create a new democratic society. The ad revenue from Survivor: Parliamentary Reform Edition will be used to fund public campaigns for increased voter turnout. • Corruption, sponsored by Just For Laughs. A hidden camera crew will drop a wallet with $1,000 CLAXTON cash and no ID in front of each candidate while they are alone and believe themselves to be unobserved. Then we get to see what happens. That’s it. • Multi-Partisan Cooperation. The four main party leaders must build a spaghetti bridge that can support 10 kilos of weight. They must work together, and must agree on the design and division of labour necessary to complete the bridge. If the bridge collapses, we get new leaders. • Voter Appeal: Pie fight. Exactly what it sounds like. No lemon meringue or key lime allowed, as those can sting the eyes. There will be 500 pies, some tables to duck behind, and a half-hour time limit. The only winner will be the viewers. Read Bob Groeneveld’s Odd Thoughts online this week at LangleyAdvance.com

HEALTH
Disappointed in hospital
Dear Editor, Just recently I had an unfortunate cardiac episode which needed urgent care and was rushed via ambulance to Langley Memorial Hospital emergency department. Well, that was like going to a third world country hospital! Stretchers could be rushed through the halls expediently as they are too narrow – plus they were full of other stretchers, carts, and people. There were three other stretchers, with all their accompanying ambulance people ahead of us and very soon three other sets behind us. As I lay looking at the walls, they were dirty and pitted with
SAFETY
City core not a dump Dear Editor, In response to Downtown dirty, dangerous, Langley Advance, July 23. I have lived in this community for five years, I have never had any issues with the “lowlife junkies” that Mike Brian stated. They are people… people who you don’t know where they’ve come from or what they’ve encountered. It’s pretty sad that Mike states we need to clean up our “ugly ghetto” from all the “useless parasites.” I don’t see him first in line willing and able to help. Instead of being judgmental and ignorant, maybe have a heart and get to know some of the people and offer suggestions rather than wanting to place them somewhere else. Yes, there are issues, but there is a lot of good that is in our City, too. If people would take time to see the beauty in our City, then they would realize it really isn’t so bad after all. Heather Alexander, Langley
gyp-rock torn off. Finally in the emergency room after three hours, we finally saw one of the rushed and harried doctors. It turned out well for me in the end thankfully, but the Emergency Department was so small and crowded with carts of linen and carts of supplies, people and staff coming and going. The floors and walls were dirty. There were lots of house flies buzzing around and landing on me in the stretcher behind the emergency room curtain. A police group were guarding a drugged-up young woman next door. Finally one of the doctors told my two children “Get your
loved one out of here before they gets sick!” I know it is not the doctors’ and nurses’ fault, but the hospital is far too small and not funded with our collected Langley property tax money – as usual. It was very disheartening to witness just having been released from a clean, fantastic, well-run, but old hospital recently (St. Paul’s). It is a disgrace to our lovely Langley community that we cannot even have a clean, well-run emergency department to assist our large growing population. Heaven help us in a huge disaster scenario such as an earthquake! Ras. Gosse, Walnut Grove
ELECTION
Fed funds for pool? Dear Editor, It was with great dismay that I saw millions of dollars being given by the Conservative government out to a variety of projects in Langley with no money at all being given toward an indoor pool in Aldergrove. Why is that? I am dumbfounded. After the announcement of the new recreation centre for Aldergrove, I talked with the mayor, councilors and Township staff. I asked if there were any grants available and I was assured if they could possibly get a grant to enclose the proposed pool,
they would do it. I understand that it was the Conservative government’s final decision on how much and where the money would go but there would have been consultation with the Township. The Langley Township council does not care if the children, teenagers, adults and seniors of Aldergrove have an indoor pool. They had their chance to give us one without cutting down a single tree but they refused to give Aldergrove the indoor pool that we have been asking for for over 30 years. Dianne Kask, Aldergrove
EDUCATION
Founders recognized Dear Editor: Recently I had occasion to attend the Kwantlen Polytechnic University 2015 Convocation to witness the five founders of the Langley Community Music School receive honorary doctorates of Letters. The late Leonard
Woods, the late Peter Ewart, Marilyn Lamont, Dr. Keith Lamont and Linda Bickerton-Ross, were so honoured. Without the determination of these five citizens, the Langley Community Music School would not exist today to produce quality musicians who have,
and will continue to excel in their chosen music careers. We, as patrons of the wonderful concerts at the Rose Gellert Hall, are also benefactors of the school, as we enjoy concerts by the students and visiting artists alike. S.S. Anderson, Langley

The West Harrison fire was more than 1,300 hectares and smoke filled the Fraser Valley. Area fire departments were receiving several reports of smoke late last week. Artists bring visions to Tbird The West Fine Art Show will benefit the Langley Hospice Society. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
Great art can come from collaboration, and so can great art shows. The sixth annual edition of the West Fine Art Show will bring together its painters and sculptors with the Thunderbird Show Park, and with the Langley Hospice Society. Last year the show was held at Thunderbird for the first year, but this year it will take place during the International Hunter Jumper Show, one of the highest-profile events on the
equestrian calendar. The show will take place Aug. 20 to 23, and has been dubbed “Remembering Betty” this year. Founder Murray Phillips’ wife Betty passed away in 2013, and the show’s support for Langley Hospice is in her honour. Phillips said Hospice is “a fine organization which gave her so much comfort when she needed it most.” The chance for more exposure and a new audience is an exciting one for the organizers, including the Hospice Society, said Hospice’s Shannon ToddBooth. “The Langley Hospice Society plays an incredibly important role in the community and we are honoured to host this fantastic event,” said Thunderbird president Jane Tidball. Langley artists Phillips and Brian Croft, the West Fine Art Show will have an eclectic series of works on display and for sale this year. Todd-Booth said there are sculptors, equine artists, and painters of historical or natural scenes taking part. Artists are coming from Vancouver Island and the Interior, and as far afield as Alberta to show their work at this edition of the show. One of the better-known artists coming is Brent Cooke, a recent winner of the prestigious Canadian Wildlife Federation 2015 Robert Bateman Award for wildlife conservation. The show also gives locals a chance to interact with the artists. A full 25 per cent of sales will benefit Hospice, but Todd-Booth said a big benefit is having artists like Phillips speaking for the society.

ynn Kusack has woven herself a spot on the Arts Alive artists’ roster. The Brookswood resident, who creates pieces at her home-based studio, Mason Heights Pottery & Basketry, has been involved with Arts Alive as an artist for the past four years, however her history attending Langley’s largest arts and culture festival dates back more than a decade. “I’ve lived in Brookswood for 43 years,” Kusack said. Kusack retired several years ago, allowing her to channel her energies into activities that she enjoys doing, which is primarily basketry and pottery. She sells her pieces at her home studio, the Langley Farmers Market, and at the annual Arts Alive. “I love Arts Alive,” said Kusack, as she looks ahead to the 22nd annual festival this Saturday in downtown Langley. “You get to see all the people and you have a chance to visit. It [also] gives you really good exposure to people who haven’t seen this type of work before.” Mason has always loved pottery, and basketry and in the late 1980s took pottery classes. She continued to take them on and off through the years “to grow a bit” while at the same time juggling her family life.
Troy Landreville/Langley Advance
Artist Lynn Kusack from Mason Heights Pottery & Basketry laid out some of her pieces on a table in the backyard of her Brookswood home. Kusack will be participating in this Saturday’s Arts Alive festival in Langley City. Above right – Artist Joseph Chiang is back at Arts Alive. “I’m still growing as far as pottery is concerned,” she said, adding, “but I’ve always loved basketry but I never had a chance to be able to find somewhere, where I could learn how to do it.” A visit to Taos, New Mexico, set her on her basketry course. While there, she stopped by a gallery, and met a man sitting
on a bench outside, weaving a basket. “I asked, ‘Do you mind very much if I stand and watch?” she related. Over the next hour or so, the two visited and the man shared with Kusack some of the history of New Mexico. When she turned to leave the man handed her a half-finished basket. “Take it home and finish it,” he told her. “That was the start of it all,” related Kusack who estimated that, over the past four years, she has created hundreds of baskets.
Alive. In addition to Joseph Chiang’s work being selected for the 2008 Olympics Landscape sculpture design in Beijing, he has won many international awards from countries such as South Africa, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, Italy, China, and Macau, as well as Canada. The 60-yearold Surrey resident is drawn, year after year, to the atmosphere that Arts Alive brings. “Its a very good show… fantastic,” he said. “I enjoy the people. I very much enjoy the sunshine, the people, and the music.” Chiang’s interest in music, art, design and sculpture began at a young age. Since 1984, Joseph has dedicated himself to researching and designing in the ceramic arts. In 2013 he took the leap and committed more time to the development of his line of metal sculptures, which explore the theme of love. These works form part of Chiang’s vision of one day establishing a sculpture garden where the large scale forms will find a permanent home. His style of sculpting has been influenced by the multicultural stimulus to which he has been exposed. After a childhood in Southern Taiwan, Chiang spent six years in South Africa before moving to Canada in 1997. His art can be viewed at the Granville Island Public Market. His websites are lineoflove. com and josephclayarts.com.

t’s all about bringing people to downtown Langley City, to discover everything the local businesses have to offer, and at the same time to present an unbeatable festival experience suitable for the entire family. For more than two decades now, the annual Arts Alive has been doing just that. And, this year’s one-day mega art exhibition – happening on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. – will be no exception, said event organizer Teri James, the executive director for the Downtown Langley Business Association. “After 22 years of growing, this is one of the largest art festivals in the Lower Mainland,” boasted James, who anticipates a similar crowd to last year – which topped out at about 15,000. The one-way strip of Fraser Highway Teri James will once again organizer be blocked off to vehicle traffic (from 204th to 206th Streets), making way for close to 250 art exhibitors and vendors who will display an array of wares, from the more traditional jewelry and paintings to glass, sculpture, furniture, pottery, chain and metal art, photography, quilts, and other fabric and wood art. Likewise, there will be authors and live performers (music and theatrical), and James is particularly excited that Arts Alive is expanding the kids venue this year (see story page A16). “Don’t miss out,” she said. “Come down and be part of this great community festival, and let the local businesses show their thanks for your patronage.”

He listened intently as Teri James explained what she did and didn’t want on the main stage of this arts-focused event. She was adamant she didn’t want heavy rock or karaoke-style cover tune performers. She wanted someone who could not only play but could pull together an electic series of Lower Mainland musicians offering primarily original, upbeat, enjoyable tunes.

ix Gun Romeos is “super upbeat, so much fun, and local, that Tanya Nahal couldn’t help but invite them back to Arts Alive this weekend. This is the third year running that Nahal, owner of one of the Salt Lane businesses – Hallowville Manor – is organizing activities in the lane in front of her shop. And, she’s excited to be bringing back the popular Langley rock-a-billy band that was so well received in Salt Lane by last year’s Arts Alive crowd. This year, the Salt Lane festivities will follow a carnival theme, complete with the familiar smells and flavours such as popcorn, hotdogs, and candy apples. As well, Nahal has booked Circus Lab to perform. “It’s going to be a blast, she told the Langley Advance Tuesday, while cutting out 200 pink footsteps she’s going to be placing throughout the lane, guiding participants to the different Salt Lane activities.
Two women from the Clayton area will display wood art.
Val Hardy and Bronagh O’Hagan will have their wood carvings at Arts Alive 2015. They started with more traditional wood carving before seeing someone work with bark. Now they specifically work in cottonwood bark. “We get some from a place in northern B.C,, some from Alaska, some from the U.S. Because we need thicker pieces of bark, it needs to come from a colder climate, O’Hagan explained. The Clayton couple each works on their own pieces but they both enjoy making the fun-style wood carvings. Cottonwood is considered a weed tree and the ones they use are typically 100 years old. “It all comes from dead trees, she said. “It’s soft so its easy to handle.

Their whimsical carved houses are in demand and they will be making their first appearance at the 22nd annual Arts Alive Festival this Saturday. “No one’s as surprised as we were that we could do this, O’Hagan quipped. “We’re not very artistic. But they’ve found a hobby they both enjoy and sell about 60 pieces each year.

Hardy and O’Hagan let the piece of wood dictate the final piece. It’s a combination of what the wood inspires and what the wood allows. “It can be very chippy, O’Hagan said about cottonwood bark. “It chips and cracks a lot easier than solid wood. The pieces are decorated with some coloured paints and varnished to preserve the works that are intended to be displayed indoors. They’ve made pieces as small as three inches tall and as big as about 20 inches. An average piece takes 15 to 20 hours to create. O’Hagan and Hardy have sold pieces here and in Arizona where they winter. They’ve also had the carvings take up residence in O’Hagan’s native Ireland and sold one to a person in Japan. Now Langley will get to see their curvy, quirky creations thanks to the unique event that is Arts Alive. “We have never been, but we’ve heard a lot of good things about it, O’Hagan said. > More at langleyadvance.com

Wes Barker will be back with escapes and street magic at this year’s Arts Alive Festival being held this Saturday, Aug. 15 in downtown Langley.
MAGIC
Barker back for stunt magic An increasingly famous local magician will wow crowds at Arts Alive this year.
S
tunt magician Wes Barker has wowed the crowds at the Arts Alive Festival since 2011, and he’s back this year. More visitors than ever are likely to recognize Barker, who has been making appearances on America’s Got Talent, Comedy Network, and Penn & Teller: Fool Us over the last few months. Barker is fresh off his Aug. 3 appearance on the Penn & Teller program, on which he successfully pulled off a trick the two experienced magicians couldn’t figure out. That’s a hard task – only about a quarter of all contestants manage to do something the duo can’t explain. While they guessed at a couple of ways Barker could have managed the trick, Barker used a different method, and they ran out of ideas. Barker performed the trick with a torn-inhalf phone book, a sword, and the reluctant assistance of the show’s host, Jonathan Ross. That TV appearance came just weeks after Barker’s July 21 appearance on America’s Got Talent. Based in Clayton Heights, the former Langley resident has been performing across the country and performing at theatres, colleges, and corporate events for the past several years. He’s always come back to Arts Alive, however, despite his increasing fame. “Arts Alive is still one of my favourites,” Barker said, and added that he’s looking forward to attending again this year.

rts Alive has long put aside space for potential future artists – children. This year, the space is expanding considerably to serve the increased number of kids who came to sample last year’s events with their parents. “Due to public demand, we decided to increase the children’s venue,” said Teri James, head of the Downtown Langley Business Association. The venue has moved west, to the parking lot

Kids crowded around a princess at last year’s Arts Alive Festival. between the cupcake store and the pilates studio near the start of Fraser Highway’s one-way section. A number of new events and entertainments have been added, including live Celtic music. “We were wanting to give
the kids some lively music to listen to,” said James. Kids can get their faces painted, and there will be non-musical entertainment in the form of Scruffles the Clown, a master of the art of balloon animals – and balloon everything else. Lately
he’s been making ballon versions of the minions from the Despicable Me series of films. While they’re listening, there will be larger bouncy castles to jump around in – the castles were so popular last year there were lineups – meeting with Princess Elsa from Disney’s Frozen, and taking part in numerous crafts. James said there will be painting, paper bag hats, and magical murals. There will also be a sizeable area for sidewalk chalk drawing. “The kids get to be their own little Picassos,” said James. Children do have to be supervised by their parents while they are in the kids entertainment area. Last year, there were between 400 and 500 children at Arts Alive, and this year, the festival is planning for up to 1,000.

he sight and sound of water doesn’t have to be completely absent in a drought-stricken garden. Birdbaths use almost no water but are still a joyful place for birds that are thirsty and also birds that want to splash around and wash. Two Burnaby gardeners added a long, flat rock in the middle of their birdbath not only as a spot for small birds to perch while drinking, but also for paper wasps and other insects to do the same thing. No space? A Maple Ridge gardener placed a beautiful and sturdy pottery saucer close to ground level. This created a water source that was not only available to birds, but the house cats also found it easy to get a drink. So could insects because she also placed a shallow rock in the centre. Placing rocks in a water source doesn’t only make it accessible for small, thirsty creatures, it also prevents crows from polluting the water by washing food in there. A leaky birdbath can be a useful pot for shallow-rooted plants, especially sedums or sempervivums which can stand water-short conditions.
Gardening in Langley
Corn a summer delight Think water features T A ANNE MARRISON
Generally, teasels in a garden are a huge nuisance: they’re wellarmed with thorn-like prickles and they seed with a vengeance. A Surrey gardener was delighted to find that after rain or watering, her teasel’s big, cup-shaped leaves formed small pools where hummingbirds were bathing. Many low-water features owe their appearance to the magic of recirculating pumps. A North Vancouver gardener has a mystery water feature where a brass tap seems to be suspended in air running water into a tiny pool. A transparent tube fits into the centre of the pool at one end and into the tap spout at the top end. He has drilled holes around the upper end of the tube. Deep down in the pool a recirculating
pump impels water up the tube, where within the tap it exits through all the drilled holes. The water running down the outside of the transparent tube makes the tube invisible. Standing stones which are a source of bubbling water have freedom from mosquitoes as a side benefit. A Maple Ridge gardener has a group of three standing stones on a drain rock floor midway down a steep, winding path. Bubbling water runs in sheets down rock, through the layer of stones down to a basin. From there a pump moves the water up inside the rock. It’s quite possible to have a hole drilled longways up a standing rock. Seasonal ponds and creeks also have a place in gardens. A Langley gardener created a pond with rocks and stumps. It’s dry in summer but looks pondlike yearround. A Burnaby gardener made a seasonal creek that’s a path for most of the year. It’s paved with small, water-worn stones. Anne Marrison is happy to answer gardening questions. Send them to amarrison@shaw.ca

Animals wind up in shelters for all kinds of reasons. Chloe and Spanky, two sibling felines currently waiting for new adoptive homes at the CARES cat shelter, had to part with an owner who was going through serious health issues, and couldn’t care for them any longer. They grown up together. The shelter is hoping that the spayed five-year-old sisters can stay that way and find a new home willing to accept two cats. Theo is another newcomer, a two-and-a-half year old neutered male who was rescued as a stray, and may have been left behind by owners who moved. A little shy, he soon approaches new people to nuzzle and purr. As part of its fundraising efforts to find homes for cats like Chloe, Spanky, and Theo, the CARES shelter is hosting its 12th

Lily & Daisy Daisy, a 7 year old small Shih Tzu mix, and her “sister” Lily, a 4 year old Beagle mix, are looking for a home together. These dogs are proven with dogs, cats and kids. Here is the catch, these dogs have a difficult time being left alone so they are looking for a home together where the people who love them are present a great deal of the time. Their new home with need to have a secure yard, good supervision and tolerance. The rewards... double the love and gratitude.
Nico
Moya
Cleopatra

Carmela
Nico is a nature lover and is looking for a companion to share long walks while taking time to smell the roses. This boy can comfortably spend time with other dogs but would like to go home at night to a place where he can be an only child as he does not share well with others. Nico is about 6 years old, weighs 32 lbs and will require regular grooming and a patient owner. No kids or cats for Nico.
Moya is a very friendly German Shepherd looking for someone to give all that love to. Moya requires slow introductions to other dogs. Moya grew up with children. Walking Moya requires a confident leash holder as Moya is conflicted about meeting new dogs (read: barks anxiously and pulls). Moya has flea and food allergies so will require a special diet and good vet care life-long. In exchange you will get a dog that demonstrates why people love this adoring and loyal breed.
Cleo was surrendered to us after her cat siblings were ganging up on her. She is 4 years old and is lovely with dogs. She enjoys other cats as long as they enjoy her! She has a bit of cattitude, so she would not be suitable for a home with small kids. She is a very special black beauty and is just waiting for that purrfect person to come along and sweep her off her paws.
The names Bond, James Bond. This needy guy is as affectionate as can be and is dying to meet his new furever family. James Bond requires a lot of attention so he will need to go to a home that has company for him pretty much at all times. James is autoimmune and had to have almost all of his teeth pulled. Due to stress during his stay, he had started to pull his back hair out and has since needed steroids to resolve this issue. He is a cat that will also require a veterinary diet life long.
Carmela is a sweet black and white domestic short hair. She came to us with her 2 brothers, Soprano and Tony. She is a bit on the reserved side, so she is looking for a home without small kids. She would enjoy a home without a ton of hustle and bustle.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL
Rams feast on winless Huskers
Langley did what was expected in its BCFC home opener: the local juniors thrashed the Valley Huskers.
TROY LANDREVILLE
tlandreville@langleyadvance.com
For a very brief moment early on, it looked as though the Valley Huskers were going to put up a bit of a football fight at McLeod Stadium. After the first quarter of play, the Langley Rams held a tenuous 7-0 lead on the winless Huskers during the Rams’ B.C. Football Conference home opener. In the second quarter, the Rams essentially put the Huskers away, racking up 28 points to carry a huge 35-0 lead into halftime. The Rams extended their lead to 49-0 after three quarters of play and then eased off the accelerator a bit during the final frame en route to a 52-0 victory. Capping the scoring was a 41-yard field goal from Brian Hope with six minutes remaining in the game.
Troy Landreville/Langley Advance
Langley Rams defensive lineman Shaiheem Charles-Brown closed in on Valley Huskers quarterback Noah Falconer during the first quarter of Saturday’s B.C. Football Conference game at McLeod Stadium. CharlesBrown recorded two quarterback sacks during the Rams’ 52-0 victory. The defending BCFC champion Rams improved to 2-1 while the Huskers from Chilliwack fell to 0-3.
Last year, the Huskers finished last in the six-team BCFC standings with a 1-9 record.
Rams head coach Jeff Alamolhoda was happy to see his team show some killer instinct after a somewhat slow start. “Any team in this league is always a threat and definitely, Chilliwack has gained strides over the past couple of years in terms of their credibility,” Alamolhoda said. “But what happened was, we’re learning as a team to finish our opponents, and finish our games right, because we’ve tended in the past to feel that games were over before they were over.” Leading the Rams was the two-pronged running attack of Nathan Lund (seven carries, 145 yards and two touchdowns) and Devin Logan (who racked up 73 yards on six carries with a touchdown). Overall, the Rams rushed for 336 total yards. Rams quarterback Dylan Tucker completed six of nine passes for 151 yards, while tacking on two touchdown tosses to his totals. Bobby Pospischil (four catches for 96 yards) and Seye Akinsanmi (two catches for 56 yards) hauled in touchdown throws from Tucker. continued on page A27…

Nicole Bolton was a ‘key ingredient’ for the Western Canadian, silver medal-winning Kelowna Heat.
Langley shortstop Nicole Bolton (No. 13), top row, third from left, helped the Kelowna Heat win a silver medal at the Western Canadian U18 girls fastpitch championships in Lloydminster, Sask.
TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@langleyadvance.com
Langley’s Nicole Bolton was quite a pickup for a Kelowna Heat team that captured a silver medal at the Western Canadian U18 girls fastpitch championships in Lloydminster, Sask. The 18-year-old shortstop, whose club team is the Langley Rebels, batted .500, one of the highest averages in tournament history, with a team-best slugging percentage of .700 and a near-perfect fielding percentage of .963, with just one error in eight games. The Heat is made up of girls from various places in the B.C. Interior, and with some injuries, had room for a shortstop. “I was very pleased when Nicole agreed to make the trip to Lloydminster for the westerns,” Heat coach Boyd Tyerman said. “Nicole was a key ingredient to the team’s success at westerns, being one of the strongest offensive and
defensive players on the team. Most importantly she fit in great with the team, sharing many of the same traits and values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and competitiveness as the other girls.” During the tournament held July 31 to Aug. 3, the Heat went 3-1 through the round-robin, while outscoring their competition 37-25. Nanaimo upset the Heat by a 6-5 score to start the playoffs, which sent the Kelowna team down a longer path to fight back into medal contention. The Heat dug deep and won their next three games in convincing style versus St. Albert (8-0), Manitoba #2 (13-3), and then Nanaimo (8-0). The redemption win against Nanaimo guaranteed the Heat at least a silver medal. In their ninth game of the weekend, the Heat faced the unbeaten No. 1 Manitoba team, the
Manitoba Thunder, to determine Western Canadian titleholders, With the score tied 2-2, the Thunder’s offence came alive in the fourth inning, with a couple of big hits to gain the lead and earn the victory. The Heat accomplished something that no other Kelowna team in their division has ever done: medal at the western championship. The silver medal capped a fine summer for Bolton, who helped the Rebels to a bronze medal at the B.C. provincials earlier in July. “This was Nicole’s last year in minor fastball, she has worked hard for many years at a competitive level of fastball, so it’s great to see her rewarded with two medals at the end of her last minor ball season,” Tyerman said. > More at langleyadvance.com, search “Nicole Bolton”

Langley in
history
Looking back through the files of the Langley Advance. Eighty Years Ago August 8, 1935
ˠ Fifteen bridges in Langley needed to be repaired or replaced, for a total cost of $3,000. Council decided to spend up to $2,000 on the work, for public safety. ˠ A complete list of Langley’s 34 teachers, along with their monthly salaries (from $78 in elementary schools to $190 for the high school principal), was published.
Seventy Years Ago August 9, 1945
ˠ Council warned about driving on country roads, as a shortage of labour made it impossible to do brush-cutting at corners.
Sixty Years Ago August 11, 1955
ˠ “Keep your eyes closed or I’ll put the
gun right through you,” a masked gunman told bank teller Allan Walker. Three men had forced him off Glover Rd. and robbed him of $3,600 while his way to open the Canadian Bank of Commerce’s Fort Langley sub-branch. ˠ Centralized offices and a room for a new chest x-ray machine were approved for Langley Memorial Hospital.
Fifty Years Ago August 12, 1965
ˠ A would-be burglar broke into Matilda Harjula’s store on Fraser Hwy. west of Brown Rd. (240th St.). Harjula had pointed a shotgun at his feet and threatened to shoot if he didn’t leave. ˠ Municipal councillors were displeased to learn that, while the number of welfare recipients had decreased, total payments had increased.
Thirty Years Ago August 7, 1985
ˠ It took Langley RCMP 15 minutes to crack the case: four young men with a .22 calibre rifle held up a pizza delivery boy, making off with $38 and the food. Police found the four men inhouse across the street from the crime scene.

Series sweep bit of a shock …continued from A23
Jensen said the Thunder had higher expectations going into the post-season. “We had a good lineup. We thought we had enough to get through this series. Regardless of what we did, they found a way to answer. I don’t know if they carried the play all the time but they carried the scoreboard. I think it shocked everybody that we got swept. Even though the games were tight, losing two in our own building was tough.” The series opener was reasonably tight, too, with the ’Bellies winning 15-12 on Aug. 4 at Queen’s Park. The only one-sided affair was game two, in which the Salmonbellies won by a 10-5 score last Thursday. In the final game of the series Monday at the LEC, the Salmonbellies’ Jordan McBride snapped an 8-8 tie at the 12:37
mark of the third period. The Salmonbellies’ Colton Clark then scored with 1:34 to go in regulation to close out the scoring. Steve Hinek with a pair of goals and Jacob Ruest, Lewis Ratcliff, and Alex Turner with a goal and two assists each led the Thunder in a losing cause. For the Salmonbellies, McBride, Clark, and Tyler Crompton each scored twice and added an assist while Keegan Bal scored a single to go with two helpers. FINAL BUZZER: The WLA final features the top two teams from the regular season: the first-place Victoria Shamrocks (14-4) and the second-place Salmonbellies (12-6). The defending playoff champion and 2014 Mann Cup finalists Shamrocks dispatched the Maple Ridge Burrards in four lopsided, albeit very physical, games in their best-of-seven set.
Sun will present tough test …continued from page A23
Defensively, Rams defensive back Jesse Cervas returned a fumble 21 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Brock Gowanlock and Shaiheem CharlesBrown each had a pair of quarterback sacks while Adam Marchetti and Nick Westad also got to Huskers pivot Noah Falconer for sacks. Once upby a comfortable margin, the Rams put in their young second stringers in favour of their starters and Alamolhoda was impressed with what he saw. “We were able to get a lot of our role players into the game in the second half, and those guys are hungry,
champing at the bit to show the coaching staff what they can do,” Alamolhoda said. “The depth of our program really showed and we didn’t miss a beat.” The Rams will be tested this Saturday, Aug. 15 when they visit the Apple Bowl in Kelowna to take on the 3-0 Okanagan Sun, in a rematch of last year’s Cullen Cup, BCFC playoff final. Take the Rams’ season-opening loss to Nanaimo’s V.I. Raiders out of the equation, and this should prove to be Langley’s toughest test of the young season. “They’re well coached, they’re extremely physical, and they did a lot
of work during the off-season in terms of their strength and conditioning,” Alamolhoda said, of the Sun. “That team is always going to bring it and we have our work cut out for us as a young team, learning how to play at that level. We’re going to have to be able to come in and compete and I feel we’ll come away with a win, so long as we take care of the details that we’re able to take care of.” Gridiron Banter: Weather-wise, it was near perfect for football for the Rams and Huskers. A few raindrops fell down on the McLeod Stadium turf on an otherwise comfortable evening.
