Fruitvale musician on tour TOM SAMULAK SAYS HE’S ADDICTED TO PERFORMING VALERIE ROSSI West Kootenay Advertiser

A 25-year-old musician originally from Fruitvale is still catching his breath after recently performing at The Gorge. Tom Samulak played lead guitar for Haley and Michaels at the fourth-annual Watershed Festival, a three-day music and camping event over the August long weekend, which included country superstars Dierks Bentley, Florida Georgia Line and Carrie Underwood. “The show was amazing,” he told the Trail Times. “The band was tight and the crowd responded very well. They screamed during my guitar solos, which I always appreciate.” He didn’t see any familiar faces in the crowd though he heard there were quite a few Greater Trail folks at the concert. Once he’s up on stage, he said, the adrenaline kicks in and it becomes quite surreal. “It also goes by in a flash,” he added. “I’m completely addicted to performing.” After graduation from Berklee College of Music, Samulak moved to Music City, where the acoustic and electric six-string guitarist

found his place in Nashville’s music scene. Samulak’s love for music started at a young age in Fruitvale, where his parents June and Darcy Samulak still live. His passion ignited when he started taking guitar lessons with Pricilla Cole at about 10 years old and then from local radio personality Wayne Kelly. The EZ Rock morning host has been following his career since. “I’m so proud to have been apart of his journey,” said Kelly. “He’s become an amazing guitarist and now I need a ton of lessons from him!” Fruitvale got a taste of his sound last month when he returned home to perform at the Villagers with musical talent Molly Brown. “Kootenay Jack organized it for us,” he recalled. “I really appreciated how receptive

everyone was to us. I think Molly blew everyone away, she is just an incredible talent.” The two just wrote and recorded a couple theme songs for Canadian television, including “Fur Harvesters,” which will air this fall on WildTV. The network reaches more than 14 million Canadian, 30 million U.S., and 12 million European television households. Last week, Haley and Michaels opened for fellow Berklee alumni Charlie Worsham in Chicago and the tour now continues. The group headed to Chase County Fair & Expo in Imperial, Nebraska, last Friday, and then onto Whiskey Tango in Omaha Nebraska and

Des Moines, IA, at the Iowa State Fair. Samulak really enjoys working with the band and “gets a lot of creative freedom” to boot but said he’s planning on making time this fall to record his own work. In his earlier days, Samulak enjoyed funk, blues, hip-hop, country, classic rock, bluegrass, and fusion. However, nowadays Nashville is starting to rub off on him. The band he plays with has a modern country sound “with a bit of a California twist,”

Trail-Beaver Valley sign recreation deal TIMES STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser

The City of Trail and Beaver Valley (Fruitvale, Montrose and Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Area ‘A’) finally announced a recreation agreement — albeit only for one year. The deal, which takes effect on Sept. 1, will see Beaver Valley contribute $125,000 for the term which will allow their residents to use Trail Parks and Recreation facilities and participate in its services and programs at the Trail resident fee. “We are absolutely delighted to have reached a recreation agreement with Beaver Valley,” said Mayor Mike Martin in a press release issued by the City of Trail. “This is a giant step for community collaboration and sets a new tone for future conversations,” added Ali Grieve, Chair of BV Rec, in the release. “We are especially pleased that an agreement has been achieved prior to the start of fall recreation programming.”

2015

Grieve told the Trail Times on Friday that BV Rec opted for a one-year deal because of the proposed boundary expansion discussions. The negotiating committees involved in the discussions included Trail representatives Mayor Martin, Councillor Kevin Jolly and Councillor Sandy Santori, and the Beaver Valley Recreation Committee (BV Rec), composed of Mayor Cecchini (Fruitvale), Mayor Danchuk (Montrose) and Grieve (Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Area ‘A’ Director) . “It will reestablish the relationship that will provide the residents of the Beaver Valley unrestricted access to the Trail Recreation facilities,” added Martin in the press release. “Although we were pursuing a longer-term agreement at a higher level of financial participation, we fully understood and appreciated the concerns expressed by the BV Rec negotiating team. The one-year term provides the opportunity to build a strong working relationship to effectively deal with other matters and allow for consideration of a longer-term agreement in 2016.”

Wineries, brewers can sell booze they didn’t make JEFF NAGEL Black Press

Wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries with licensed lounges can now sell patrons liquor they didn’t produce. Until now, a distillery couldn’t sell anything other than the spirits it produces — a glass of B.C. wine was off limits — and a winery couldn’t oblige if one guest at a table wanted a beer instead of the local grape. Those lines are erased under the latest change stemming from B.C.’s liquor policy review. But there will be a limit — a maximum of 20 per cent of sales by a given producer can consist of liquor produced off-site. That’s intended to keep the focus on unique local offerings. “We are doing away with B.C.’s archaic liquor rules,” Attorney General Suzanne Anton said, adding the change will give more choice to consumers while supporting B.C. tourism and small businesses. Craft Distillers Guild of B.C. president Tyler Dyck said the move opens the door for craft brewers, vintners and distillers to cross-promote each other. The new rules also apply to special events, so a wedding or other event at a winery or other liquor producer will no longer have to get a special occasion licence to serve alcohol. Anton indicated more reforms may be coming in areas where “further red tape can be cut.”

Federal race is on Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

The federal election race is officially underway but most candidates in Kootenay Columbia and South Okanagan-West Kootenay have already been campaigning for months. The exception is the Green Party in South Okanagan-West Kootenay, which has yet to name a candi-

date, although they expect to have one in time for the Oct. 19 vote. In Kootenay-Columbia, the candidates are incumbent Conservative David Wilks, New Democrat Wayne Stetski, Liberal Don Johnston and the Green Party’s Bill Green. The riding will now include Nelson, Salmo, and Kaslo. Johnston is from Nelson while the other candidates are from East Kootenay. In the new riding of South Okanagan-West Kootenay, the

candidates are New Democrat Dick Cannings, Conservative Marshall Neufeld, Liberal Connie Denesiuk and independent Brian Gray, all of whom are from the Okanagan. The riding includes Castlegar, Greater Trail, the Slocan Valley, the Boundary, Oliver, Osoyoos, and Penticton. BC Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko, whose riding is being divided amongst several others, is not seeking re-election.

Robotic Decoy to aid in catching poachers Betsy Kline West Kootenay Advertiser

Tuesday All Seats $7

Kootenay Centre Cinemas Showline 304-2224

3D Features $10

The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust has donated a robotic deer decoy to the West Kootenay Zone Conservation Officer Service. The decoy will help conservation officers catch poachers by enabling them to witness poaching activities and gain evidence to support prosecution of the crime. The decoy will be utilized in circumstances where there has been a complaint from the public. Conservation officers will first utilize patrols, and if those fail they will then set up the decoy. Officers observe the decoy from a distance and use a remote control to activate the robotic parts which move its head and tail. The officers observe and record information to aid in prosecution. West Kootenay Zone Conservation Officer Tobe Sprado explained, “It has to be in an area where we can set it up in a safe location. There are firearms being utilized and so therefore, we must be extremely selective as to where we place these decoys.” If the decoy is shot, the bullet will pass through the hard styrofoam mount. As long as the robotic parts are not damaged, it can be used over and over again. In other jurisdictions, the decoys have helped prove various charges including hunting out of season, shooting from a road and having a loaded firearm in a vehicle.

The realistic looking decoy will aid conservation officers in catching poachers. Photo by Betsy Kline The HSWL Trust began its robotic decoy program over 10 years ago and has placed over 30 decoys with various US agencies, but this is the first cooperation with a Canadian agency. According to a statement from the HSWL Trust, they developed the program because, “The decoys are an effective means of helping hard working wildlife officials catch poachers in the act and hold them accountable for their crimes.”

70 years since atomic bomb was dropped on Heroshima It’s hard to believe that is was 70 years ago, but on August 6, the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later, on August 9, a second bomb fell on Nagasaki. Since then, no atomic bomb has been fired at an enemy target, but nine countries, including the U.S., together possess more than 15,000 nuclear weapons. That information was shared at a

recent memorial at the Mir Centre for Peace last Thursday. The event also called for nuclear disarmament. A study released by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in October 1997 found that Iodine-131 (I-131), which is released when an atomic bomb detonates, was deposited everywhere in the U.S. as a result of nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site. Alex Atamanenko, MP for B.C.

Southern Interior, also attended the event, and called on the Canadian government to step up and push for nuclear disarmament. “Canada certainly needs to step up to the plate,” he said. “You know, we’ve either been abstaining from important votes, or blocking other votes, and I think it’s time to call on this country to step up and start this attack ... on the abolition of nuclear weapons.”

Heritage BC’s Annual Conference “The Main Thing” Heritage BC, a charitable non profit, announces the opening of registration for their annual conference, taking place October 2-3 in Rossland, B.C. This year’s conference, “The Main Thing” follows on the national Heritage Week theme promoting main streets as an vital part of heritage conservation and economic stimulation. Come learn how to create a dynamic downtown by refreshing and renewing your revitalization strategies, and learn how to leverage your heritage assets to create cultural tourism opportunities and discover sustainability practices. British Columbia’s architects, planners, archivists, consultants, non-profit leaders and heritage activists will come together for this year’s conference, which takes place in a variety of Rossland’s unique and valued heritage buildings. Not just for history buffs, the conference is open to all, featuring a variety of interactive

workshops, talks and tours highlighting the beautiful historic town of Rossland and a number of other heritage downtowns in the Kootenay region. Conference workshops have something for everyone with topics including heritage and cultural tourism, heritage conservation and climate change, and traditional building materials and methods. “We are delighted to welcome Jim Mountain, Director of Regeneration Projects at Heritage Canada the National Trust to open the conference as keynote speaker”, said Janice Henry, Heritage BC Board President. “His wealth of experience with downtown renewal will give attendees a great insight into our “Main Thing’ theme.” Feature presentations include “How I Caught The Heritage Bug” a talk from retired CBC broadcaster Mark Forsythe, a guided tour of downtown Nelson, and a behind the scenes look at the conference venue and Heritage Legacy

Fund project, the Rossland Miners’ Hall. Delegates will have the opportunity to explore the archives at the Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre and have hands on learning experience like making adobe clay bricks or traditional timber framing. “By bringing the conference to Rossland, we feel that we can expand the understanding of how important main streets are in terms of a city or towns economic viability, and how heritage conservation adds

value in terms of community sentiment and cohesiveness” says, Heritage BC Executive Director, Kathryn Molloy. “This year’s conference will offer a multitude of learning and networking opportunities and many free or low cost options including our new a la carte choices for those unable to attend the full conference.” Registration is now open on the Heritage BC website. Former Red Mountain Resort general manager Jim Greene has taken up a teaching post at Selkirk College and will begin passing on knowledge he has earned over a 25-year career as a leader in the tourism industry. Beginning this month, Greene will teach a number of fall semester classes in the School of Hospitality, Tourism & Cosmetology on Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus. With a resume decorated with a diversity of tourismrelated achievements and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario, Greene compliments the already solid stable of faculty with plenty to offer students. “It’s an entirely new career for me,” says the 57-year-old. “It’s scary, but that’s what life is all about. If I can pass on what I have learned in tourism over the years, I’m happy to do it.” This semester, Greene will teach Business Finance, Accounting, Hospitality Law and Mixology to students in the Ski Resort Operations & Management Program (SROAM), the Resort & Hotel Management Program (RHOT) and the Post-Graduate Diploma in Hospitality Management. Following a Passion to the West Kootenay Greene is a wellknown personality in

the West Kootenay outdoor scene, but planting roots in the mountainous topography of Rossland was one of happenstance. In 1994, Greene was living in Edmonton where he managed a Canadian Tire store and on the side was a partner in Supernatural Adventures, an inbound tour operator that packaged British Columbia travel products to large European tour companies like Inghams Travel. In February of that year, Greene and a friend went on a two-week BC ski trip where they hit many of the province’s interior resorts—Blue River, Sun Peaks, Big White and Silver Star. While making their way from the Okanagan to Fernie, the pair decided to make an unscheduled dip into Rossland. It didn’t go well. “It was puking so hard by the time we got to Red, you couldn’t see anything it was snowing so hard,” Greene recalls. “We looked at this trail map which was almost useless and for the whole day we poked our way down the runs.” They stayed in Rossland that night with the struggles of the day behind them and planned to head to Fernie the next morning. While having dinner at Rockingham’s and watching the opening ceremonies of the Lillehammer Winter Olympics, they met the restaurant’s coowner Billy Blackburn. When they described their day and provided a less than stellar account of the adventure, Blackburn was having none of it. The gracious host told Greene he would meet them at Red’s base the next morning for a more intimate look at the legendary terrain. “Billy showed up that next morning and kicked our asses,” says Greene. “He took us all over that mountain… it was amazing,” says Greene. Hooked on Mountain Life As it does for so many bitten by the winter majesty of the region, life changed that day

Selkirk College instructor Jim Greene is settling into his new office on the Tenth Street Campus and excited to be helping foster a new generation of tourism leaders. and soon after Greene had moved his family to Rossland. It didn’t take long for Greene to get involved in the community with his first major assignment being the president of the Rossland Chamber of Commerce. While helping foster and bring new business to the alpine community, Greene was approached by former Red Mountain Resort general manager Rich Morton to come on board as marketing manager. After a year in that position, Morton left and the ownership group offered Greene the resort’s top job. Greene’s first season as GM was 1998, an epic snow year for the West Kootenay that saw 145,000 skier visits to Red Mountain. “We had great snow and I was a genius,” he says. The next season was a relative bust because of poor snow and at times during the season Red Mountain was only seeing 80 skiers a day. “You go from hero to goat because it’s all about snow,” says Greene. As general manager, Greene helped establish

Red Mountain as a bigger player in the outdoor winter scene. He helped negotiate the master plan with the province in 2001 that saw the Rossland resort sign a 60-year lease and open up the potential of 4,200 acres of terrain. “Certainly opening up Mount Gray was one of our biggest goals going into 2004,” says Greene. “Opening up 1,000 acres of new terrain with a lift was pretty spectacular. That was a pretty big achievement.” In his final years at Red Mountain, Greene headed up the real estate division and oversaw the development of the Slalom Creek condominium project. New Chapter Begins in the Classroom Greene is no stranger to Selkirk College. Between 2004 and 2007 he sat on the SROAM advisory board which provides direction on trends and the key skills the ever-changing industry requires from graduates. Greene had been pondering a move to the education sector for a couple of years. When the opportunity came up

at Selkirk College this past spring, he jumped at the chance to make a change. Though his own learning curve is steep as he steps into the role of mentor, Greene says his experience in the industry will help students get a grasp on key concepts. With strong enrollment in the programs he is teaching, Greene is excited to be passing on his knowledge in a sector that is vital to the economic growth of the region and province. “It’s a very bright future,” says Greene. “Tourism as a global industry is growing leaps and bounds. It’s one of the largest growth industries in the world and that is not going to change for a while. The opportunities both entry level and management level will grow along with it. They will need students coming out with the right training and the students graduating from Selkirk College will always have a leg up.” Find out more about the Selkirk College School of Hospitality, Tourism & Cosmetology at selkirk.ca/school/ hospitality-tourism.

One-hundred and seventh in a semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names. The naming of Kuskonook (or Kuskanook) is intriguing on so many levels that we’ll devote a few installments to it. The town near the south end of Kootenay Lake came to life during railway construction in 1898. It was previously — and for a while, simultaneously — known as Goat River Landing, Armstrong’s Landing, and Kalama. It’s hard to know which name came first. The earliest mention of Armstrong’s Landing was in the Nelson Miner of Jan. 8, 1898: “The CPR is opening a route to Fort Steele by the new wagon road from Armstrong’s landing on Kootenay river.”

The CPR is opening a route to Fort Steele by the new wagon road from Armstrong’s landing on Kootenay river.

Goat River Landing and Kalama were both first mentioned four days later in the Kaslo Kootenaian. Armstrong’s Landing was named for Vancouver railway contractor William Henry Armstrong (1857-1922), as it was his headquarters during construction of the CPR’s Crowsnest Pass line. The name was only used through mid-February 1898, although a few subsequent references explained it as Kuskonook’s former name. While the name Kalama was short-lived, it nevertheless had a presumably apocryphal story attached to its origin, related in the Nelson Economist of Feb. 2, 1898 by fictional correspondent Larry Finn: “I had a letter from Tom Carey the other day, Tim. He has a job on the railway that they’re building up [by] Goat River, an’ he tells me that there’s a big town springing up at the landing. They calls it Kalama. That’s a quare name, but Carey tells me it was an Italian what gave it to it. A few ov the boys he says, got a bottle ov whiskey into the camp, an’ it was so bad that they were all

giving it the worst name they could think ov … “An Italian dropt in, an’ Carey axed him to have a drop of calamity water. The Italian went back to his camp an’ towld all his friends about the drink ov — he couldn’t think ov calamity-water an’ called it Kalama-water. They went looking for the Kalama-water, an’ when they found it at the landing they called the place Kalama, an’ the name stuck to it.” Kaslo’s British Columbia News of Jan. 28, 1898 complained: “Goat River Landing, Armstrong’s Landing, Kalama, and perhaps more to follow! Will the new town be named to death? That is what the people of the bustling burg at the south end of Kootenay Lake want to know. They do not like the name of Kalama that some non-original person fasted upon it, probably in memory of the old town across the line … and are willing to take almost any other old thing rather than that.” That “old town across the line” was Kalama, Wash., in the southwestern part of the state, which has three possible etymologies. The first says it was named after the Kalama River which in turn took its name from a native Hawaiian named John Kalama (fl. 1837-70). Alternatively, Gen. J.W. Sprague of the Northern Pacific Railroad

named the town in 1871 for a Native American word calama, meaning “pretty maiden.” And in 1811, Gabriel Franchere wrote of a village at the mouth of the Kalama River called Thlakamah. Kalama also resembles Kalamaka, a lake and railway point south of Vernon, apparently named after an Okanagan chief named Tanamalka. The Kalamalka Hotel opened in Vernon in the early 1890s but the lake didn’t share the name until the 1910s. Kalama, BC was last mentioned in February 1898. Goat River Landing held on a little while longer; there are references until November of that year and the name later applied to a different spot. Why so much fuss over the name? Competing railways. The Great Northern’s Kaslo and Slocan Railway, which owned the townsite property, planned to use it as the terminus of their Bedlington and Nelson line, and certainly wouldn’t accept the name of a rival company’s contractor. They weren’t big on Kalama either, though a post office application had apparently been filed under that name. When president Daniel J. Munn and chief engineer John Hamilton Gray moved in to lay out the townsite, they chose yet another name. Next: Kuskonook vs. Kuskanook

Birds released by OWL in a Nelson after June 29 storm destroyed their nest

Tamara Hynd West Kootenay Advertiser

Two young merlins have found their way home to Nelson after spending six weeks at the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta. The small falcon species pair are brothers who were thrown from their nest during the June 29 storm when strong winds toppled the tree home to their nest. Four fledglings were in the nest that fell into Wayne Woodward’s deck, but only two survived the crash. Their mother squawked through the night. Woodward collected the surviving birds in a towel to warm them up. “They were in shock,” he said. A call was made to OWL in Delta. “It works way faster than the insurance companies,” said Woodward referring to damages sustained from the event. He kept the birds in a dog cage and placed them on a trampoline outside, where they were protected by netting and could hear the high pitched “klee klee klee” of their distressed mother. A handler arrived the next day and the avian pair were transported to the rehabilitation centre. As they got their wings, a mature female merlin taught them to hunt and fly in a flight cage. Two weeks ago, Woodward got a call from the facility saying they would like to release the merlins where they were found. Merlins are territorial so releasing them into another environment would only cause more troubles, Woodward explained. Both merlins were released Thursday and flew straight to the tree that used to house their nest. And there’s a good chance they will reunite with their mother. “The mother has been seen around so hopefully they will reunite,” Woodward said.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23

You’re very good at marching to the beat of a different drummer, Aries. But keep in mind that sometimes it’s advantageous to follow along with what others are doing.

Libra, now is the time for a change, however big or small that change ultimately may be. You may benefit from adoptiong a new hobby or changing careers.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22

Taurus, you hope that others appreciate what you are doing for them this week. You may not get a verbal thank-you, but expect some to show their appreciation in other ways.

Your life can’t always be a bundle of excitement, Scorpio. Sometimes you have to sit back and enjoy those periods that are not so on-the-go. Relish in the slower pace.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, many people are willing to lend you a helping hand when you need one. Make the most of their generosity, and then give back whenever possible.

Sagittarius, others are looking to you for advice this week. Give any inquiry the thoughtful consideration it deserves, doing your best to take others’ concerns to heart.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, enjoy the fruits of your labor this week. You worked hard, and now is a great time for you to rest, relax and catch up with some old friends. Good times are ahead.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, leave room for others to share their opinions after expressing your own. It never hurts to see another’s point of view, and a loved one’s opinion may prove enlightening.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, a heavy workload may force you to regroup and start over next week when you have more energy and inspiration. This is just a temporary setback.

Capricorn, even if you have a million ideas running through your head, push them aside in favor of some much-needed rest. You need to take some time for yourself.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, embrace the coming days as a chance to distinguish yourself at work. Extra work presents an opportunity to put your value to the company on display.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Romance is in the air, Pisces. Enjoy this exciting time and take things slowly at first. Enjoy the slow pace and get to know your new love interest.
