Heather was a mother of three who loved to bake and would volunteer at her oldest daughter’s school. She didn’t look anything like a stereotypical drug user, but in the early-morning hours of June 30, her husband Boris found his commonlaw wife, who occasionally used heroin, slumped on the living room carpet. The paramedics who rushed to the house while Boris tried to revive his wife would later tell him Heather, 27, had likely been dead for two hours. A toxicology report later showed that she had unwittingly injected methylfentanyl – an especially potent version of fentanyl – thinking it was heroin. On Wednesday, Boris sat smoking a cigarette on the steps of the Abbotsford home he shared with his wife for years. The deaths of several Vancouverarea people at the hands of fentanyl disguised as heroin in recent weeks have prompted public warnings. Boris wants the public to know the issue affects a wide spectrum of people in the community. “People need to realize it doesn’t just affect a certain type of people,” he said. His wife had began taking Oxycontin before moving onto heroin. He said his own drug of choice has been cocaine. His use had diminished in recent years, although he said he used cocaine for the first time in six months just a week before Heather’s overdose. He said he wasn’t sure how his wife obtained her drugs. He had been working as a foreman at a construction site, although he’s currently on employment insurance as he works to deal with the aftermath of Heather’s death. His personal history informs his thinking about the dangers of drugs that appear to be one substance, but are actually another. “You’re not safe with whatever you do,” he said. “For all you know, you can do something today and be fine, and do the same thing tomorrow and it can kill you.” Boris said he was asleep when his wife overdosed, and believes that he might have been able to save the woman he called the love of his life if he had been present. Motorcyclist killed in crash, son survives

A father-and-son summer motorcycle ride turned tragic in Glen Valley on Wednesday afternoon. A 41-year-old Abbotsford man was killed and his 10-year-

old son is in hospital after the motorcycle they were riding collided with a farm truck in north Langley. Langley RCMP Sgt. Alex Mulvihill said the crash, in the 26700 block of 88 Avenue, took place just before 5 p.m.

The man and his son were travelling east on 88 Avenue when they collided with a flat-bed truck making a left out of a driveway onto 88 Avenue. Both the man and boy were ejected from the bike. The man died at

the scene. The boy was airlifted to B.C. Children’s Hospital, where he is said to be in stable condition. Both were wearing helmets and that likely prevented any head injuries for the boy, said

police. Police are investigating whether poor sight lines played a role in the crash, which occurred on a small, slightly elevated bridge. The motorcyclist may have had the view ahead blocked by the rise in the road.

Abbotsford Police are looking for three men in relation to domestic violence incidents between Aug. 7 and 9. Const. But the pair were separated in February 1942 during the First World War. Alice and her family were among Japanese Canadians residing within 160 km of the Pacific coast who were ordered to move for reasons of “national security.” The federal government confiscated and sold their property, and the family resettled in Alberta, choosing to work in the sugar beet fields of another land owner. But Alice never forgot her roots, recalling happy memories of the family farm and her days attending Grade 10 and 11 at

Olive – whose surname is now Curtis – lives in Acme, Wash., and couldn’t wait to reconnect with her beloved friend. The pair have seen each other only one other time, about eight years ago. Sorting out federal election issues Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views The first, and perhaps the only, complete English-language debate in this long federal election campaign has helped define the issues, and the non-issues. I’m not going to try to tell you who “won” or “came out swinging,” because this is not a sporting event. If you’re paying attention in August, bless you, and you probably have a favourite already. First, let’s deal with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s diabolical scheme to extend the length of the formal election period. This, according to national pundits, is an extension of his evil plot to attract more financial supporters than the other parties, and spend the money. In other words, it’s a non-issue and any opponent who dwells on it looks like a whiner. This is the first election in modern Canadian history to follow a four-year schedule. National pundits spent months

telling us Harper was going to use a loophole in his own election law to call a spring vote before the economy tanked. Didn’t happen, and now the Conservatives are rightly under scrutiny about their economic management. Incumbent manipulation of election timing is over, and that’s good. Scheduled elections by their nature create longer campaigns, as demonstrated in B.C. and the United States. So they should be conducted under formal campaign rules, which limit the noise of public sector unions and other special interests. Another non-issue is the non-existent deficit and recession that supposedly grips Canada. On actual results, there is a slim surplus, and if – a big if – Saudi Arabia continues to depress world oil prices, there may be a modest deficit by next spring. The Bank of Canada’s recent move to devalue the dollar has already produced a rebound in exports and tourism, which any

government would appreciate. Have you tried to find parking at the mall lately? Of particular interest to B.C. voters is the contest between NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and Green Party leader Elizabeth May. May used what may be her only national debate appearance to press Mulcair to oppose the TransMountain pipeline expansion project before hearings are complete. Mindful of Adrian Dix’s disastrous 2013 decision to do the same in B.C., Mulcair insisted he would wait for the federal review, even though he considers it to be inadequate. This is, of course, all theatre. Based on their actions, the NDP, Green Party and Liberals are all opposed not just to oil pipelines but export gas pipelines as well. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau wants to cancel capital cost allowances for liquefied natural gas investment that have been granted by B.C. and Ottawa, which could be a dealbreaker for LNG.

B.C. NDP leader John Horgan formalized his opposition to the TransMountain expansion last week, in a letter filed with the National Energy Board. But we’re expected to believe that Mulcair has a different position, for now. Harper was forced to admit that his long effort to persuade U.S. President Barack Obama to approve the Keystone XL pipeline has failed, and the project will have to wait until Obama leaves office next year. The debate also confirmed positions on Canada’s modest role in bombing Islamic State terrorist positions in Iraq and Syria. The Conservatives are for it, and the Liberals, NDP and Greens are against it. Trudeau set the stage for the contest in Quebec, which B.C. voters can only watch from afar to see if it once again decides the shape of their federal government. Trudeau pushed Mulcair on his cynical bid to court the separatist voters who suddenly swung to Jack Layton’s NDP in 2011. Like petroleum prices, it’s beyond our control. No protection My family grows blueberries in Abbotsford. As anyone who has bought blueberries knows, they don’t last forever, and you had better eat them quickly before they’re past their peak. Part of running a successful business, whether it be in blueberries or televisions, is getting your product to market. Unfortunately, as is the case in any business, sometimes the buyers of your product either can’t or won’t pay for it due to bankruptcy or insolvency. If I sold TVs, then in such a circumstance I would be able to reclaim my product, but with blueberries, due to their short shelf life, once they’re gone, they’re gone. My family operates blueberry farms both in Canada and the U.S. In the U.S., if a buyer can’t or won’t pay, growers have the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act Trust (PACA) that we can rely upon to help us get the value of our produce back. Canada has no such protection for fruit and vegetable growers. Up until Oct. 1, 2014, Canadian growers were protected in the U.S. because of an exemption that they afforded us. However, the U.S. got tired of asking Canada for over 30 years to create a similar trust and revoked our preferential status, making Canadian fruit and vegetable growers vulnerable to major financial losses north and now south of the border. Due to the debilitating cost, most growers and sellers have to just walk away. The financial impact to these growers and our industry can be debilitating. The lack of protection in Canada is not only a risk to us, but also to our greatest trading partner, making Canada a less desirable place to do business. Furthermore, consumers are affected through higher product costs as sellers try to offset the risks. The Canadian produce industry is asking all parties to make financial protection for fresh fruit and vegetable growers a priority in the upcoming federal election. We’re calling on the government of Canada to create a no-cost deemed trust like PACA which will benefit Canada’s produce industry and the consumers of our fruits and vegetables. This is the first growing season that we have been unprotected in the U.S. as well as in Canada, and as of yet I, and my fellow growers, haven’t seen the full impact. In the States, I have PACA, in Canada, nothing. Canada can’t afford to do business like this, and neither can I. Bar Hayre Owner, Mirage Blueberries

Much loved corn on the cob A much loved side dish with summer meals is good old fashioned corn on the cob. Farm fresh corn during the summer is very abundant and popular in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia where I live, but I know that there are many other areas also rich in this agricultural gold. No matter where one resides in North America, it always seems to be available fresh during the summer. Whole corn on the cob should either be eaten on the day of purchase or stored in the refrigerator, as the natural sugars convert to starch faster in the presence of warm temperatures. Corn can be a very healthy part of a balanced diet as its dietary profile includes vitamin B1, folate, dietary fiber, vitamin C, phosphorus, and manganese. Everything however should be con-

sumed in moderation, including the amount of butter and salt that is applied to the finished product. Fresh cracked pepper is one of my favourite toppings (along with the butter and salt) and is a great way to add tons of flavour. Let your creativity run wild in the kitchen and discover what else you can top your corn on the cob with. The internet and local libraries are full of great recipe ideas. If grilling your corn on the cob instead of boiling it, try it over lump charcoal — the taste difference is amazing. I simply pull off the husks and place the cobs directly on the grill, while rotating them occasionally until mostly all the kernels are slightly charred. The uses for fresh corn on the cob do not stop

with just cooking whole. By standing the corn on end, carefully take a sharp knife and run it down the cob to remove the kernels. This will allow you to enjoy the fresh taste of corn in any recipe that calls for kernels of corn. One tip to catch the kernels efficiently is to use an angel food cake pan. With the cake pan sitting securely on a damp towel on the counter, stand the point of the cob of corn on the inner tube of the pan coming up the center. This will help to keep the cob steady and the falling removed kernels will collect in the cake pan. Try this compound butter recipe for something different the next time you have corn on the cob. Top executives at Fraser Health collected a total of nearly $2.3 million in pay, benefits and other compensation last year. Former president and CEO Dr. Nigel Murray was paid $153,000 for serving just over half the year until he resigned effective last July 10. That included $100,575 in salary, about $16,000 in benefits and pension, and nearly $35,000 in unused vacation payout, according to the health authority’s financial disclosures. Murray was not paid a severance because he resigned voluntarily to return to New Zealand as the province was set to unveil significant reforms at the health authority. Dr. David Ostrow took over from Murray as interim CEO for the second half of the year, drawing total compensation of $140,000. A new permanent CEO – Michael Marchbank – took over in early January this year at an annual salary of $345,000. The highest paid executive last year was Andrew Webb, vicepresident of medicine, who was paid a $271,440 salary and

combined compensation of $321,000. Vice-president of infomatics Philip Barker and vice-president of operations and strategic planning Marc Pelletier both received combined compensation of about $293,000. Dr. Paul van Buynder, the vicepresident of population health and chief medical health officer, resigned to return to his native Australia last October, receiving just over $167,000 for the truncated year. He was replaced by Dr. Victoria Lee, who had previously served as an executive medical director, and collected total compensation of $280,700 last year. Other Fraser Health executives on the authority’s disclosure of highest paid positions included Peter Goldthorpe, the vicepresident of corporate services and facilities, who received total compensation of $280,000, and Roy Morton, the interim vice-president of medicine and regional programs, who received $265,500. The $2.3 million in combined compensation of the executive positions disclosed by Fraser is about 0.07 per cent of the health authority’s $3.1 billion budget.

A man who was arrested in June just minutes after breaking into a video games store has been sentenced for his crime. Dustin Joseph Murphy, 30, was sentenced Aug. 6 in Abbotsford provincial court to 30 days in jail and one year of probation. He pleaded guilty to five charges – theft of a motor vehicle, break and enter, possession of a break-in instrument, and two counts of breaching his conditions. Murphy was arrested June 8 while he had a truck backed up to the front door of the EB Games location in the 1300 block of Sumas Way. Police were alerted to the break-in when the store’s alarm went off at about 1:30 a.m. Two plainclothes officers who were nearby boxed in the vehicle, identified themselves and ordered Murphy to the ground. He was in custody nine minutes after the alarm had sounded.

Conservatives choose candidate for new riding The Conservative Party of Canada has a new candidate for the riding of MissionMatsqui-Fraser Canyon. Brad Vis was announced as the party’s candidate on Tuesday. Vis was previously the communications and forward planning advisor to Abbotsford MP Ed Fast. He left that job to return to Abbotsford, where he had been working on agri-business development as an associate for Corpus Management Group. Vis’s nomination comes nearly three weeks after the party’s previous candidate for the riding, Liv Grewal, had been forced to withdraw. Vis will square off against Liberal Jati Sidhu, Arthur Green of the Green Party and independent candidate Wyatt Scott. The NDP has yet to announce their candidate for the riding, but has a meeting scheduled for Aug. 16 to pick who will run.

The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, together with the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board and the Fraser Valley Indo-Canadian Business Association, will host two such meetings, one for each of the two local federal ridings. The meeting for the new Mission-Matsqui-

Fraser Canyon riding will be held on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Creekside Centre at Christian Life Community Church, 35131 Straiton Rd. in Abbotsford. The Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding includes areas in Abbotsford north of Maclure and Bateman Roads, along with Mission and several Fraser Canyon communities. The meeting for the Abbotsford riding, which includes most of the rest of Abbotsford, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, adjacent to Abbotsford city hall. Candidates will be questioned by a panel representing businesses in the local area. In addition, the audience will have an opportunity to provide questions for the panel to pose to the candidates, said chamber president Josh Bach in a news release. Abbotsford has lowest election expenditures limit in B.C.

The Abbotsford riding has the second-lowest expense limit for local candidates in British Columbia, but candidates vying to represent the area in the House of Commons don’t expect it to be a problem. Candidates in Abbotsford are allowed to spend no more than $201,361.09 in the election. Limits are based on both a riding’s number of voters and size. The limits have been increased to account for this year’s record-long campaign. The Abbotsford figure is ahead of only SurreyNewton, where candidates can spend $197,640. Kootenay-Columbia has the highest limit, at more than $275,000. As he runs to retain his seat, incumbent Member of Parliament Ed Fast said he doesn’t anticipate needing to spend to the limit. “We fully expect that we will not be spending anywhere near the maximum we are allowed,” Fast told The News. “We’re going to use the amount supporters have entrusted us with wisely.” Fast, who hosted Defence Minister Jason Kenney at a fundraiser for Conservative supporters on

Saturday, has opened a campaign office at Unit A 33271 South Fraser Way in Abbotsford. NDP candidate Jen Martel said her expenditures will be based on how much money flows in from supporters, and that they will be focusing on personal interactions with voters. The party hasn’t yet set up a campaign office, and Martel – a professional lifeguard and first-aid trainer – said she has been spending most of her evenings knocking on doors. Green candidate Stephen Fowler is out of the country. The Liberals have not yet nominated a candidate. In the 2011 election, candidates were limited to $120,735 in spending. Fast spent the most, at $72,483 in expenditures. Liberal party candidate Madeleine Hardin spent $30,449, while the NDP’s David Alan Murray spent $17,031. Green candidate Daniel Bryan spent $769. Candidates who garner at least 10 per cent of a riding’s vote will get back 60 per cent of their campaign expenses. The expense limit for the adjacent MissionMatsqui-Fraser Canyon riding, which includes parts of north Abbotsford, is $216,008.

enough of a building, leaving out obvious sources of risk that can include drywall, floor tiles, insulation, cement pipes, linoleum and spray-on fireproofing. Workers exposed to airborne asbestos fibres released at construction sites can contract cancers and other asbestos-related diseases decades later. Asbestos has emerged as B.C.’s top workplace killer, with 581 related deaths in the past decade, 77 of them last year. Those deaths were mostly due to industrial exposure of trades people at high levels 20 to 40 years ago, but Johnson fears more gradual exposure in construction and demolition will be the new killer of the future. Contributing to the problem is the soaring price of land in Metro Vancouver that has fueled a boom in demolitions as hundreds of older houses are cleared away each year to make way for the dream homes of buyers. “The housing market is playing into this in a significant way because many old homes built prior to the mid’80s are just being purchased for the land and torn down,” Johnson said. Some contractors or home owners have no clue about the risks or the health and safety laws that apply, he said, while others are trying to dodge the cost of dealing with the danger responsibly. Five cities – Vancouver, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Saanich and Nanaimo – require demolition permit applicants to first provide hazardous material survey results. Renovations are more difficult for enforcement officers to spot and police. Johnson said WorkSafeBC is appealing to home owners to get a responsible contractor. Abbotsford resident Alan McColl will be racing at the 28th annual B.C. Historic Motor Races (BCHMR), Aug. 22 to 23, at Mission Raceway. McColl will be competing in his 1977 Tiga Formula Ford against others from B.C., Alberta and Washington State. The BCHMR is the largest vintage race event in Western Canada. Four Abbotsford Cardinals grasped gold in Saskatoon on Monday. Carter Loewen (first baseman and pitcher), Corey Jackson (pitcher), Coleton Harold (right fielder) and Chase Stewart (pitcher) joined the provincial contingent to claim B.C.’s third consecutive Canada Cup baseball gold. Team BC went up against a previously undefeated Saskatchewan side in the final, defeating the home team, 10-1. They beat Quebec, 6-2, in the semi-finals, and dispatched New Brunswick, 3-1, in the quarterfinal round. The Cardinals recently competed in the B.C. Premier Baseball League post-season and were ousted by the North Shore Twins in the first round.

“Mentally challenging” is how this year’s Vancouver Open winner, Brad Clapp of Chilliwack, labelled the course at Ledgeview. Clapp took top honours and the $7,500 winner’s cheque after finishing 11-under through three rounds of tournament play, which was split between Pagoda Ridge Course in Langley for the opening round, and Abbotsford’s Ledgeview Golf & Country Club, for the last two days of competition. Clapp, who was familiar with both courses, said Ledgeview was the more taxing, with tougher, less-open greens

than Pagoda, and with tighter fairways where the trees are more encroaching, making driving the ball difficult on some holes. Despite those challenges, the Vancouver Open champion shot a 66 in both the second and final rounds played at Ledgeview, which is a par-70 course. For the opening round at Pagoda, a course with a par of 72, Clapp tallied a 69. “I shot three consistent rounds,” he said. “But I didn’t feel like I played my best golf.” Clapp competes on the Mackenzie TourPGA Tour Canada circuit. He played in the

ATB Financial Classic at Cochrane, Alta., which wrapped up Aug. 2, and then drove back for the Open’s start on Aug. 6. “I didn’t have a practice round … [and] I was not hitting great during the week.” The 28-year-old said his past experience with the courses helped considerably, adding the competition was good. On his tail were Surrey’s Ryan Williams and Richmond’s Riley Wheeldon. Both tied for second at 9-under. Isaak Thiessen was a letter carrier in the Greater Vancouver area for 32 years (1957 1989). He was born in Lethbridge, Alberta to parents Isaak and Katherina Thiessen. He died peacefully in Abbotsford, BC at the age of 87 with his wife Agnes by his side. Isaak is survived by his wife Agnes, sister Helen Friesen, brothers David, Abe, George (Dora) Thiessen. He will be missed by his extended family and friends. Viewing will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at 7:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road. Abbotsford. Burial will be held on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 9:00 am at Maclure Road Mennonite Cemetery, 33965 Maclure Road, Abbotsford. Memorial Service to follow at 11:00 am at Central Heights Church, 1661 McCallum Road, Abbotsford. Lunch will be served in the Church Gymnasium. 365 countdown celebrated at City Hall Thunderbird Plaza at City Hall was party central on July 21 with the 365 countdown event to the Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games. The entertainment and food was non-stop. Several Abbotsford businesses stepped up to the plate to create an atmosphere of ‘the party has now begun’. Save-On-Foods provided free hotdogs, and with that wonderful aroma wafting through the air, the 400 attendees could not resist. The biggest question of the day was chicken or beef, and it kept the barbecue working non-stop. Water provided by SaveOn-Foods was appreciated during the warm evening. Chapman’s Ice Cream, Two-Bite Brownies and Sun Rype apple juice were offered at the next table. The Starbucks booth created quite a buzz with several Starbucks Managers pouring unlimited coffee for all. We appreciate the community spirit from these food suppliers and know they will be supporting us throughout the next year until the Games are completed in 2016.

Staples staff was in attendance, providing reusable drinking cups and straws for anyone who signed up as a volunteer for the Games. There are 500 cups in total, so if you register now as a volunteer you may still get one. The beautiful signage at the event was created by our Official Printer, Bourquin Printers. You will be seeing more of it over the next year, especially during the week of the Games. We thank Jake Sidhu of Bourquin Printers for coming on board as President’s Circle contributor. And of course, nothing works without a sound system so thanks to Sapphire Sound for manning the system so professionally. These community businesses truly did ‘Rise Above. Reach Beyond.’ with their commitment to be great corporate citizens. We thank each of them along with the amazing entertainers. They truly turned this evening into a special event.
