FVRD debates limiting legal shooting areas Provincial approval needed to enforce bylaws on Crown land From 3
ing into trees rather than into a bank can be considered dangerous. Police also need to consider where people are shooting firearms. The law states that as long as you are not on someone’s property, or shooting into someone’s property, you can shoot from Crown land into Crown land, explained De Jager. Another concern is restricted firearms.
“Pistols can’t be shot there’ they must be shot on a range,” said De Jager, adding that using high-capacity magazines is an arrestable offence. Discarded ammo and the sound of extended, semi-automatic gunfire suggest both illegal activities occur in the area. In order to educate the public on what is against the law, the Mission RCMP have been setting up information
sites at the entrances to both Stave Lake West and East as part of a preventive blitz. “It’s not that we are trying to deny anybody of their lawful enjoyment of Crown land. That’s not what we’re doing at all, but there has to be a tipping point between your lawful enjoyment and the safety of the people who live there. We have to protect them as well.” Along with the
information booths, a two-member patrol covers the area every weekend, using everything from trucks and ATVs to boats. “It’s a multi-faceted approach.”
TTT While Stave West has municipal bylaws to help control shooting, the same can’t be said for the east side. Ray Boucher knows all about the goings-on
at Stave East. The local hunter and director of Electoral Area F lives just off Sylvester Road and has seen first-hand the dangerous activities. He, along with Area E director Orion Engar, have teamed up to propose a new bylaw for that area and others in the Fraser Valley Regional District that are experiencing similar difficulties. The purpose of the
proposed bylaw is to create restrictions as to where firearms can be used. According to a staff report to the FVRD, the proposed bylaw calls for a no-firearm discharge within 400 metres (one-quarter of a mile) of specific forest service roads, in any direction. That would force recreational shooters to move farther into the woods, and away from inhabited areas, before legally discharging their guns. If the bylaw is passed, it would not only impact the Lost Creek Forest Service Road (FSR) in Stave East, but would also apply to the Carratt Road FSR in Area F as well as FSRs in Electoral Area E (Chilliwack Lake and Slesse Creek FSR), Area C (Chehalis, Morris Valley and Lake Errock FSR) and Area G (Norrish Creek and Florence Lake FSR). Provincial approval is required to enact the legislation.
Boucher feels the FVRD will likely give the new bylaw three readings by the end of September, then send it off to the province for final approval. But more adjustments could be needed. Boucher said along with the 400-metre restriction from the road, he’d like to see gun enthusiasts have to travel 20 kilometres along the Lost Creek FSR and into the forest before being allowed to shoot. “Let’s do it safely and out of the way.” Passing the bylaw would give the RCMP the power to ticket violators. Without changes, Boucher is worried about the consequences. “It’s only a matter of time before somebody is going to get seriously injured or killed,” said Boucher. “With all the ATVs out there and people discharging firearms, it’s not a good recipe.”

A few days after a huge fire destroyed Mission Auto Body and Towing, there is already talk of rebuilding the family-owned company. The structure was gutted by fire early Tuesday morning. In all six fire trucks and 30 firefighters were on scene. Firefighters managed to stop the blaze from spreading to other businesses, but the structure itself was gutted. While owner Wally Duperon could not be reached for comment by press time, two of his sons have already posted messages on Facebook. Nik Duperon wrote “Unfortunately our family suffered the

A BC Ambulance helicopter was called in as a precaution. The medical transport helicopter landed in a field on Sylvester Road and had to wait as search and rescue attempted to extricate the hiker. “We received a call to assist BC Ambulance yesterday

Who’s running again?
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
another was recently switched. The NDP has not chosen their candidate, though an announcement should come this weekend. As for the Conservatives, Liv Grewal was replaced last week by Brad Vis. Liberal candidate Jati Sidhu has been in place for months and has a nice head start on the “name recognition front” over his newly announced opponents. Arthur Green, of the Green Party, has also been in place for some time. That leaves independent candidate Wyatt Scott to round out the ballot slip. More may be to come. Voters have their homework to do, especially in the canyon, if they want to learn about these candidates.
Canadians, including Missionites, are getting ready to go to the polls for the 2015 federal election on October 19. Voters can now brace themselves for a plethora of speeches, public appearances and plenty of political promises made by candidates vying for their favour. While some voters may already have a party which they choose to support – no matter who is running – others have more than two months to get to know the various candidates in the new riding of Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon. But in an area this vast, getting to know a candidate may be a challenge, especially considering that one hasn’t been named yet and

YOUR VIEWS
Park, association tied together What’s in a name? Mission Heritage Association/Fraser River Heritage Park? It seems to me that these names are synonymous and should remain as they are, symbiotically viable. People must surely realize that there would not be such a park if it had not been for Norma Kenney and others of the Mission Heritage Association, who shared her vision and strong commitment. After a long struggle, the former St. Mary’s lands were saved from development and the park came to be, growing over the years to what is today, a unique example of what ordinary citizens can accomplish by working co-operatively with city council, with service clubs, church groups, with the Royal Canadian
Legion and with the many volunteers who contribute over 10,000 hours of labour per year. Think Rose Garden, Rhododendron Garden, orchard rejuvenation, parking attendants, Twilight Concerts, workers from the prison system etc. How much does that add up to in union wages? Don’t forget the overtime/holiday pay for after hours activities. Here we are more than 30 years later and Mayor Randy Hawes and his likeminded council wish to develop a plan for all of Mission’s parks. As for the many parks that need upgrading, the District of Mission should put its efforts into these projects and leave the responsibility of Fraser River Heritage Park with the association that
created it and the people who love it dearly. It appears, that under the current council’s leadership, most of these dedicated souls will be gone. I feel that this is a sad, thankless, cruel and unnecessary way to end their days at the park. Please, let’s carry on Norma Kenney’s legacy. And here’s hoping that the Observatory project becomes a fait accompli. Morning Rotary, with its $20,000 donation, has committed to continue fund raising for this exciting project. To borrow a phrase from Virgil, “sic atur ad astra” or thus you shall go to the stars. Elspeth McAuley Mission
It’s our Give drivers a break Thanks bridge folk fest I have always enjoy the Record but was dismayed to see our own Mission paper call the Mission Bridge the Mission-Abbotsford Bridge. It is called the Mission Bridge. That’s what the plaque says. Why let Abby claim our bridge? We’re stuck with their crime stats, do they have to get our bridge too? Secondly, do a story on the mess that the Welton stairs are now causing downtown and up in my neighbourhood at 5th and Welton. The drug dealing, needle littering and plethora of scumbags need to be controlled. The loitering around our museum concerns me too, as it seems to be a matter of time before something happens to it. Mark Steffich Mission
I have three people in my family with either a “L” or a “N” on their cars. They are repeatedly honked at, waved at and yelled at for doing the speed limit, and driving safely as taught. Yes there is probably a mistake or two. But how does honking, yelling and berating these new drivers help them. They have to do the speed limit
or they go back to step 1 with a ticket. The “L” or “N” should get them some compassion and a little slack cut. Once they get their full license, the are free to speed and have absolutely no courtesy for other drivers like the Kings of the Road.

As a veteran volunteer of the Mission Folk Music Festival I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful people that came out in support of the festival. Despite the torrential downpour that threatened to dampen our spirits, it didn’t and I’m proud and appreciative of those who did sit through it and showed their enthusiasm. Acts like this makes me as a volunteer happy to have been there to share the experience with them. Although for the most part I was under the covered area of the bistro, it still amazed me, as in past years, how people from all over come rain or shine and partake in the festivities. I’m looking forward to doing it all over again next year even if it rains. Thanks Missionites for showing the world just how much we love the arts. Bonnie Straumfjord

Vis earns Conservative nod Power of good Blog.blackpress4good.com The Conservative Party of Canada has a new candidate for the riding of Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon. Brad Vis was announced as the party’s candidate on Tuesday. Vis was previously the communications and forward planning advisor to Abbotsford MP Ed Fast. He left that job to return to Abbotsford, where he had been working on agri-business development as an associate for Corpus Management Group.

Canyon riding includes areas of Abbotsford north of Maclure and Bateman roads, along with Mission, Agassiz and several Fraser Canyon communities stretching up to Lillooet in the north. Vis will square off against Liberal Jati Sidhu, Arthur Green of the Green Party and independent candidate Wyatt Scott. The NDP has yet to announce their candidate for the riding, but has a meeting scheduled for Aug. 16 to pick who will run.

Several all-candidates meetings have been organized for federal election candidates running in the two local ridings. The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, together with the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board and the Fraser Valley Indo-Canadian Business Association, will host two such meetings, one for each of the two local federal ridings. The meeting for the new Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding will be held on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Creekside Centre at Christian Life Community Church, 35131 Straiton Rd. in Abbotsford. The Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding includes areas in Abbotsford north of Maclure and Bateman Roads, along with Mission and several Fraser Canyon communities. The meeting for the Abbotsford riding, which includes most of the rest of Abbotsford, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, adjacent to Abbotsford
city hall. “Candidates will be questioned by a panel representing businesses in the local area. In addition, the audience will have an opportunity to provide questions for the panel to pose to the candidates,” said chamber president Josh Bach in a news release. “This is a wonderful opportunity to see the candidates in person on a level playing field and to evaluate their responses.” Prior to the meetings, the chamber will be sending the candidates a set of pertinent questions. The questions and the candidates’ responses will be posted on the chamber website at abbotsfordchamber.com later in September. Those running to represent the Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding have also been invited to an all-candidates meeting hosted by Mission Community Services Society. The event is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at the Clarke Theatre. To submit questions for the night, email rick.rake@missioncommunityservices.com.

Tyler Olsen ABBOTSFORD NEWS
An independent candidate in the upcoming federal election has garnered headlines across the world for his wacky campaign video that starts with him riding a giant computer-generated Canada Goose and ends with him shooting lasers out of his eyes. Wyatt Scott, who is running in the newly created Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding, released the video in June, but it gained attention on Twitter on Tuesday, inundating the Mission businessman with calls from around North America and generating headlines as far away as the United Kingdom. The minute-long video sees Scott plummet to earth with an Excalibur-like sword, slay a dragon with it, fist bump an alien, and catch a man falling to earth. It concludes with Scott using laser beams shot from his eyes to destroy a massive robot adorned with a Conservative logo. After starting Tuesday with just 1,000 views, the video had been watched more than 220,000 times by Wednesday afternoon. The video drew raves for its sheer weirdness, with some calling it the best campaign video of all time. The Washington Post ran an online story with the headline “This Canadian campaign ad is amazing – and by amazing, we mean utterly insane.” MSNBC called the video “the campaign video of the season,” while online site The FW said it was the “best worst campaign ad.” Scott knows the video is weird. But he said it’s already accomplished its goal. “We need to garner attention, which we’re doing here.” He said the video was borne from a Craigslist ad asking for student filmmakers to work on a campaign ad. A trio of filmmakers calling themselves Three Amigos drew Scott’s attention with a video clip he described as hilarious. After a meeting and a review of the video’s script – which twice has Scott yelling “I’m running for Parliament!” – shooting commenced and the filmmakers took it from there. “We wanted to see how far we could push the envelope without going too far,” said Scott, who put the cost of the graphics-heavy production at under $1,000. Scott was the campaign manager for Rhett Nicholson, who ran for the Liberal nomination, but lost to the party’s eventual candidate Jati Sidhu. He said he was unhappy with the way the nomination process was conducted, and decided to run. He has also produced more traditional videos, and his website has a complete lack of robots and aliens.

Shelter petition presented Animal welfare concerns voiced to council Frank Bucholtz MISSION RECORD
Jennifer McNichol presented an 889-name petition to Mission council on Aug. 4, asking that the Mission Animal Shelter remain open. Council is considering having the Fraser Valley Regional District take over the animal welfare functions that are now operated by Mission Animal Shelter, under the management of Sherry Taylor. If that plan went ahead, stray dogs would be taken and housed in Chilliwack and the current shelter building would likely be sold. McNichol said she has concerns about dogs being transported to Chilliwack and potentially spending up to eight hours in a vehicle. She said B.C. SPCA has told her that “it is not OK to drive dogs around all day or hold them beside each other in a vehicle. This will definitely be poor welfare for the dogs.”
She also said that seven people would lose their jobs, one full-time and six part-time. All but one are Mission residents. McNichol said that the shelter partners with both the RCMP and Canada Post to deal with aggressive dogs, and does so in a compassionate way. There are many volunteers at the shelter, including children, seniors, people with special needs and people who no longer own dogs. Those opportunities would be lost to them, she said. People who have been sentenced often work off community service hours there as well. McNichol, who works in the federal corrections system, said people who have been convicted of crimes often learn compassion and empathy by spending time with animals. McNichol said closure of the shelter would also have an impact on Mission businesses,
and changes to the fee structure would harm existing hobby kennels in Mission. She pointed out that family incomes in Mission are among the lowest for larger urban areas in Canada (taken together with Abbotsford). “Mission Animal Control gets that,” she said. “They are compassionate and want to keep people with their dogs.” She said that five per cent of Mission residents cannot afford dog licences, and the shelter works with them so that they can pay for them over time. Many cannot afford impound fees and many do not have computers, and would not be able to track down if their dog had been impounded. She said they will not be able to pay the nuisance dog charge of $100 and aggressive dog fee of $200. “What will happen to their dogs?”

A realistic conception of oneself is sometimes considered a hallmark of the mentally healthy person. A person with low self-esteem is someone who devalues themself, or who has a deflated sense of self. Likewise, it is possible to have an inflated sense of self, and we all know how insufferable it is to be around those who think they are better, wiser, funnier, or more likable than they really are. Some people’s view of themselves is thus inflated, while others have a deflated sense of self. Most of us have areas of our lives where we are seemingly oblivious to our faults. Current psychological research suggests that there may be some benefit to positive illusions, both about ourselves and others. These positive illusions become self-fulfilling prophecies. That is, we become the people we think we are, and others live up to or down to, the expectations we have of them. So, we should think positively about ourselves and others, and strive to live up to our own expectations.
We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, as is fitting, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. The musical trio Longhand will be performing at Fraser River Heritage Park in Mission on August 19 at 7 p.m. SUBMITTED PHOTO
Jazz groups to perform Fraser River Heritage Park will be swaying to the music of the Company B Jazz Band tonight at 7 p.m. as the Envision Financial Twilight Concert Series continues. Company B Jazz Band is Vancouver’s foremost vintage jazz harmony group. The six-piece ensemble – featuring a female vocal trio in the style of the Andrews and Boswell Sisters – framed by clarinet, sax, guitar, and upright bass, has been entertaining diverse audiences since 2007. The group has released three albums and performed all over B.C. and the U.S. On Wednesday, August 19, also at 7 p.m., Longhand will take to the stage. Longhand is a co-operative trio comprised of Syke Brooks (drums), Russell Sholberg (bass), and Tony
Wilson (guitar), often accompanied by Tyson Naylor (keys). Longhand has a varied repertoire ranging from high energy free improv to melancholy tunes with beautiful melodies. Along with original music, Longhand offers unique interpretations of jazz, blues and classic Motown tunes. Twilight concerts take place every Wednesday and Friday evening from now until August 28. Admission to the concerts is free, though donations to this community-based series are appreciated. For more information about the Envision Financial Twilight Concert Series contact the Mission Heritage Association at 604-826-0277, email twilightconcerts.mission@gmail. com, or visit heritagepark-mission. ca or facebook.com/envisiontwilightconcertseries.

24 The Mission Record Friday, August 14, 2015 ▸ Hyundai takes their entry-level Tucson crossover upscale for 2016 while increasing its price tag by a mere $400 despite a major gain in standard equipment.
DrivewayCanada.ca |
▸ Exceptional structural rigidity and absorbent underpinnings gave the Tucson a remarkably smooth, well-controlled ride over the worst of West Coast roads.
▸ Not only is the Tucson generously equipped; its cabin is well thought-out and beautifully executed.
▸ The all-new Tucson makes a strong visual statement with bold styling and a longer, wider stance.

It shells out 164 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque through the auspices of a six-speed autobox. Three drive modes – Eco, Normal, and Sport – enable drivers to tweak engine response, shift mapping, and steering resistance, to correspond with the mood of the day. I really didn’t find a need for Sport mode, largely enjoying the Normal setting most. After spending a day administering the turbocharged and non-turbocharged Tucson variants, I departed the Sunshine Coast with the view that Hyundai has raised the bar for refinement, comfort, and value in the compact crossover segment. Albeit, handling dynamics and sheer athleticism may still belong to the likes of Mazda’s CX5.

While Hyundai’s soft-touch surfaces and intuitive architecture are praiseworthy, it’s the larger slice of ‘content’ pie which they serve that sets the Tucson apart from its contemporaries under competing nameplates. “More for less” has always been a Hyundai hallmark, and the Tucson adheres to the credo with its outstanding list of standard and near-standard features, including safety tech such as Blind Spot Detection with Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection. Thoughtful touches include heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-level cargo floor, and a remarkably convenient Proximity power liftgate. The latter opening by merely sensing the key in proximity of the liftgate for three seconds. No longer can the Tucson be considered an entry-level crossover despite its modest across-the-board increase of roughly $400. The upscale climb includes the availability of an optional 1.6L turbocharged I-4 GDI engine harnessed to a segment-exclusive 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT).
