Support for Cenotaph move grows C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Support for the idea of moving Kimberley’s Cenotaph appears to be growing, but Council has yet to make a decision. The latest group to come forward in favour of a move is the Kimberley Heritage Society, who wrote: “The Kimberley District Heritage Society/Museum supports the suggestion of the Cenotaph being placed on the vacant lot on the corner of Spokane Street and Wallinger Avenue. It is important, now more than ever, to provide a more suitable place for the community to pay tribute to those that served, not just on Remembrance Day, but all through the year. We feel this location best serves that purpose.” See CENOTAPH, page 3
Chamber pleased with JulyFest Bocce pit move next on agenda C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Kimberley Chamber Manager Mike Guarnery dropped by City Council this week to update Council on JulyFest and thank the city for their support. “I especially want to thank the staff in Parks and Recreation for their help, a lot of it unsolicited,” Guarnery said. “Their attitude was so helpful, you can’t buy that in an agreement.” Guarnery also recognized the hard work of community volunteers, the Chamber Board and coordinator Jason Toner. Gift for Old-Timers Hockey Club For the Townsman
It’s truly amazing to think that even when hockey rinks don’t have ice surfaces down, organizations like the Key City Old-timers Hockey Club are still busy with activities with their 120+ members. The recreation hockey league (35+ men’s) recently hosted their annual golf tournament. The tourney always takes a charitable spin and this year the members unanimously selected EKFH’s Starlite Campaign to be the recipient of their fundraising efforts. Jonathan Butt, representative for the group dropped into EKFH’s office this week to present a gift of $2,000 the first official gift of the 2015 Starlite Campaign.
The donation is being directed to EKFH’s unrestricted fund and will be focused toward purchasing minor equipment items from a large list of needs from Interior Health community wellness programs. EKFH’s eighth annual Starlite Campaign is raising funds for regional and community health programs. These programs are dedicated to helping those with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory needs, and more or may require help with chronic disease management, home nursing, in-home oxygen, wound, senior, pediatric and self-care programs. More often than not these programs have smaller equipment needs. However
the impact those pieces of equipment and patient education tools can deliver through these programs can often help people who wouldn’t have had anywhere else to turn to for assistance. The Starlite Campaign runs from November 27 – January 31, 2016 and has set a fundraising goal is to raise $145,000 and light 17 large stars ($5,000 per star) and 24 small stars ($2,500 per star). To learn more about the ongoing activities of EKFH or to make a donation please visit www. ekfh.ca. We’d also appreciate it if you like us on Facebook. n the morning of January 1st, 1978, a Irish priest stood waist deep in South Africa’s Telle River, holding his travel bag high above his head. He desperately needed to get across the river to the landlocked country of Lesotho. From there he could fly to Botswana, and from their to London. But the weather had conspired against him, and heavy rains had made the placid river a cascading torrent. His only option was to wade back out, and try and cross at the Telle Bridge border crossing. This he had hoped to avoid at all costs; his passport was as phony as the white collar he was wearing, not to mention his dyed hair. Remarkably, the passport worked, and— upon meeting up with his wife and five children in Lesotho—the fake priest flew with them to Botswana, and then to London. Landing at the Gatwick Airport, they were greeted by the British Government, a throng of reporters, and one of the senior publishers from Henry Holt & Company. Donald Woods, who had disguised himself as an Irish priest, handed over the contents of his travel bag, which contained hundreds of pages of a half-typed
half-handwritten manuscript. Only after the publisher had taken physical possession of the book would Donald Woods accept England’s offer of political asylum, or to answer questions from the press. The book Woods handed over was, as he so aptly called it, “political dynamite.” In it, he reported on the brutal
BOOKNOTES
Mike Selby murder of Steve Biko— an anti-apartheid activist and leader of South Africa’s Black Consciousness Movement. The book, simply titled ‘Biko,’ opened with this: “On Tuesday, September 6th, 1977, a friend of mine named Stephen Biko was taken by South African political police to Room 619 of the Sanlam Building in Strand Street, Port Elizabeth, Cape Province, where he was handcuffed, put into leg irons, chained to a grilled, and subjected to twenty-two hours of in-
terrogation in the course of which he was tortured and beaten, sustaining several blows to the head that damaged his brain fatally, causing him to lapse into a coma and die six days later.” Woods goes on to name in full nine security police officers, who took shifts “interrogating” his friend. He also blamed South Africa’s Minister of Police, who signed the official report stating that stated Steve Biko died of a hunger strike while in custody. ‘Biko’ was an unsettling yet international phenomenon, and Henry Holt had it published in English, French, German, Danish, Spanish, Swedish, Finish, Japanese, Norwegian, Hebrew, Icelandic and Urdu. Apartheid had now found its way into the everyday language of dozens of countries, and its regime in South Africa found its days sorely numbered. By introducing Steve Biko to the rest of the world, Donald Woods had greatly accelerated its destruction. Woods, an upper-middle class newspaper editor and fifth-generation South African, had only met Biko a few years earlier. After harshly criticizing him in his newspaper, Woods was asked to meet Biko himself. A

close friendship developed, and it wasn’t long before Woods was one of Biko’s biggest supporters. When he demanded a full inquest after Biko’s death in custody, things became very bad for Woods and his family. To silence him, Woods found himself “banned” by the South African Government— which at the time was a type of house arrest. He could only meet with one person at a time, and he was forbidden to write anything, not even a grocery list or postcard. Undaunted Woods worked on his book everyday, hiding the pages in the sleeves of his records collection. Threatening phone calls, drive by shootings, and obscene graffiti soon became a daily occurrence. The decision to smuggle not only the book but themselves out of South Africa was almost made for them, when a t-shirt soaked in acid was mailed to their five-year-old daughter, who was severely burned by it. (It was later determined the shirt had been sent by the security police themselves). That is when the escape plan was hatched, which somehow remarkably worked. (Had he been caught, Woods would have been facing capital punishment. The contents of his book would have been viewed as treason). Steve Biko would have turned 69 this year. But as Nelson Mandela stated “they had to kill him to prolong the life of apartheid.” Today, Universities not only in South Africa but also in Oxford, Manchester, Brazil, and California all have one or more campuses named after Biko. Pretoria has a hospital named after him, and the University of Durban contains the Steve Biko Freedom Square. Although none of his killers has ever been prosecuted, a statue of Biko now adorns Biko bridge in East London, not far from where he was murdered. “In time we will be in a position to bestow on South Africa the greatest possible gift,” Biko once told Woods, “a more human face.”

Support for Cenotaph move grows From Page 1 Coun. Kent Goodwin asked if Council had defined a process for moving forward on the idea. Given the public interest, he said, he didn’t want it falling through the cracks. City CAO Scott Sommerville said that he had met with the local veterans support group Military Ames, who were also in favour of the move. “We are putting some thought into grant applications, although the feds are not currently accepting applications.” Sommerville also said that most of the applicable grants would only match $25,000 in funding. “I don’t think $50,000 gets us very far on this project,” he said. Goodwin suggested that if the City were to go to a design competition there may be other cultural grants that would be available. “We are still taking
ideas at this stage,” said Mayor Don McCormick. “Although this is the most popular by a long shot.” Coun. Sandra Roberts said that the park didn’t necessarily have to be only the Cenotaph. There was enough room to be representative of the whole community, maybe recognizing miners as well, she said. “I think we’re putting the cart before the horse,” Coun. Albert Hoglund said. “If we do make the decision to go forward, the community will come forward and suggestions will flow in.” The lot on Wallinger was the location of the former Esso garage, which the City obtained in a land swap. Because of its past as a service station and cost of remediating the land completely, what the City can do with the lot is limited, but a park is one option zoning would allow.
Chamber to hold public meeting to discuss bocce site move From Page 1 He aid all the figures weren’t in, but attendance in the bocce pits on Friday night, July 17 was over 1500. “By Saturday morning at 11 a.m. we had 785 people and that was the last time I saw the counts, but I’m sure we broke over 1500 Saturday night. Sunday bocce went until 6.” Guarnery said there would be a board meeting coming up to talk about what worked and what didn’t. Change is coming to JulyFest, in terms of location of the bocce
event. “We will have a meeting with the community,” he said. “With the water park coming, it’s forcing the hand of change.” The Rotary Water Park will be built on the current location of the bocce pits and where to locate the JulyFest anchor event will be a hot topic of discussion. There were a lot of things to consider, Guarnery said, including infrastructure requirements, which the Chamber will be talking to the City about.

Kimberley Rotary fundraising for new spray park
Thanks to community support, Kimberley Rotary Club already has $104,000 for constructing Kimberley’s own Splash Park. The total cost for this cool attraction, located adjacent to the playground at Kimberley Rotary Park, will be $300,000. “Our goal is to have $150,000 in our account before we begin digging holes,”advised Sandra Roberts, Kimberley Rotary Club President. As the vision of local moms now becomes a reality, more and more donations are being received on our kimberleyrotary. org/splashpark website. This site provides answers to questions you may have about our Splash Park. It also allows you to donate and receive a tax receipt for all donations of $50 or more. An important piece of our fundraising plan is to raise $100,000 from outside our own community. To accomplish

EKFH’s Starlite Campaign – new brand to launch 2015 Campaign For the Bulletin
Cranbrook, BC… In the summer of 2008 the East Kootenay Regional Hospital was undergoing a major expansion with a new emergency department, ambulatory care and registration areas. The exterior design of the hospital offered an opportunity for EKFH (East Kootenay Foundation for Health) to undertake a new annual holiday giving initiative. As with many health and hospital foundations an annual holiday giving program is one of the cornerstones of fundraising. Many charities across the country utilize a Christmas Light a Bulb concept; however EKFH wanted to take the idea one step further. During the original planning stages the foundation felt that it might be timely to move away from the concept of lighting Christmas trees and bulbs to one with a more universal theme. After several brainstorming sessions the idea of lighting stars atop the roof line of the regional hospital came
to life. “We had originally intended to purchase commercial grade stars for the project but after extensive research the cost to source the product would require significant outlay that would set EKFH back before even realizing a fundraising benefit”, explains EKFH’s Executive Director Donna Grainger. What happened next is nothing short of a miracle. While overhearing that the Starlite idea might be scrapped the maintenance team at the regional hospital approached EKFH saying that they would like to take on their own personal project and could build the stars. Grainger shares, “I really was surprised at such an offer but I must admit on one hand I
thought, what on earth that team could build that would rise to the occasion and become a signature piece for the foundation, the hospital and fundraising.” A few weeks passed and it seemed the idea had gone the wayside until one day someone walking near the maintenance office came running to the EKFH office and shouted “Have you seen what those Maintenance Guys have built for EKFH?” With a quick run to the shop, and a turn around the corner, the first custom made star, painted gold and beaming a serene blue stood shining in brilliance. It was simply magnificent and the start of a new beginning in holiday fundraising for the foundation began.
With metal donations from former Wilkinson Steel, lighting support from BL Lighting and EB Horsman and donated time volunteered by the Maintenance Team (now officially named the EKRH STARMAKERS) the stars were built. Each Starmaker member took on a task of welding, painting, wiring, or erecting the stars. Ten stars were built, wired and hung for the 1st annual Starlite Campaign for Excellence in Health Care with an to raise funds for hospitals and health care facilities in the East Kootenay. The first star was officially lit on November 28, 2008 (as part of a 5-year partnership) with the East Kootenay Community Credit Union. The format was simple; donations of any value were accepted and at every $5,000 increment a star would be lit, the first year goal was 10 stars lit and $50,000. The public response was overwhelming with all stars lit by December 16 and by the end of January2009 an astonishing $55,118 given by the

generous hearts of donors. In 2012, the Starlite Campaign began the tradition of being a solo EKFH signature event. Over the years the Starlite Campaign has witnessed many heart-warming moments and changes including a campaign name change, the expansion to 17 stars along the roof line and in 2013 a surprise signature star designed by the EKRH STARMAKERS placed at the highest point on the hospital’s roof. In 2014 another 24 smaller stars were added to roofline lighting up the traditional blue and new colours of white and green. For 2015 the 8th annual Starlite Campaign will take on a new brand and remains focused on raising funds for regional and community health programs. These
programs are dedicated to helping those with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory needs, and more or may require help with chronic disease management, home nursing, in-home oxygen, wound, senior, pediatric and self-care programs. More often than not these programs have smaller equipment needs. However the impact those pieces of equipment and patient education tools can deliver through these programs in every community in the East Kootenay can often help people who wouldn’t have had anywhere else to turn to for assistance. From private and corporate donors, service clubs to crown corporations, hockey players to best friends, in gratitude or in memory … the Starlite Campaign donor represents many faces of giving, all with a
common goal of strengthening health care in their community and the region. Since its launch the Starlite Campaign has seen outpouring of donor generosity with over $700,000 raised for medical equipment and/or patient comforts. If you are interested in investing in the current and future health care needs of your community and the region please consider a donation towards the Starlite Campaign this holiday season. When you see the stars shining brightly please remember that through your generous support you can help light a path for others. Every dollar and every star counts! The ins and outs of election signage Arne Petryshen
Election season has begun, and that means federal candidates have planted their signs far and wide. The election is Oct. 19, so that means the signs will be up for the next 10 weeks. Vandalism to the election signs has been a problem in the past, but so far this year, Cranbrook RCMP have not had any reports on the matter. Staff Sgt. Dave Dubnyk said they haven’t heard of any problems with the signs yet, and added that messing with the signs is a crime. “Under the criminal code it’s considered mischief to personal property,” Dubnyk said. “So if we were able to determine who was responsible, we could pursue charges against them.” Section 325 of the Canada Elections Act says that no one may interfere with the transmission of a election advertising, such as an election sign. However there are a few exceptions. For instance, government agencies may remove signs that do not respect provincial or municipal laws, after informing the person who authorized the posting of the sign that they plan to remove it. Additionally, if the sign is a safety hazard, government agencies may remove it
without informing the person who authorized the posting of the sign. There are also rules on election sign placement, set out by Elections Canada through the Canada Elections Act. Some of the rules apply to private property and some to public property. For areas like apartments and condominiums on private property, property owners don’t have the right to prevent tenants from putting up elections signs on premised they lease in a building. Condominium corporations also don’t have the right to prevent condo owners from putting up signs on units they own. However, the property owners and condominium corporations have the right to set reasonable conditions on the size and type of sign, as well as to prohibit signs in common areas, both indoors and outdoors. If signs are placed on your property without your permission, the election act doesn’t prevent you from removing them. You can also contact the candidate or registered party and tell them you didn’t request the sign, and ask them to remove it. If you are not sure whether the sign is on private or public property, check with the municipality or other government agency.

Judging performances in election debates
I
’m a little late to the debate party, but it’s still worth discussion nearly a week after Canada’s party leaders held their first forum. Debates are interesting because they’re less about talking about the meat and potatoes of government policy and more about performance of the individual. Like Question Period, there’s always an element of theatrics—the fine line of coming off as righteously indignant or sympathetic to any given topic during a debate. And when it comes to winners and losers—it’s not a traditional sport in terms of points. You don’t tally it up and the end, hand a trophy to the champion and walk off stage. It’s just not that simple. In the context of last week’s debate, featuring Elizabeth May, Justin Trudeau, Thomas Mulcair and Stephen Harper—all had their moments when they looked strong, and all had their moments when they looked weak. Obviously, Harper had the largest target on his back as he was the main target of all three other candidates on various issues. However, there were moments when Trudeau, Mulcair and May either didn’t articulate their points very well or got out-debated by Harper. Mulcair came out of the debate landing
the biggest blow during an exchange with Harper, when he goaded the Prime Minister into all but admitting that Canada was in a recession. Harper tried to walk a fine line between admitting that the energy sector was struggling while pointing out that the rest of the economy is doing alright (whether you believe that or not), but his defence missed the mark while Mulcair gloated behind his podium. Despite the slip up, Harper’s performance was what one could expect, given that he was the number one target, where he got attacked by all three party leaders on evTrevor Crawley erything from the economy to the environment to foreign policy. Outside of recession exchange between Mulcair and Harper, my favourite moment was probably when Trudeau went after Muclair over Quebec sovereignty. Living in B.C. all my life, the sovereignty issue doesn’t really light my political fire, but it was an interesting exchange nonetheless. Trudeau’s attack consisted of challenging Mulcair’s statements regarding Quebec sovereignty, as the Liberal leader accused the NDP party boss of promising one thing in English and delivering a different one in French.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
That set off a discussion on the Clarity Act, as Trudeau demanded what it would take—in terms of a vote percentage—for the NDP to support Quebec sovereignty, with Mulcair responding in kind. Throughout that whole segment, Harper (and May) had a sort of bemused look on his face as the two cannibalized each other the issue, which acted as fitting (and hilarious) example of how federal elections have recently turned out. Elizabeth May, whether you agree with Green Party policies or not, came across as the smartest in the room. She had her weak moments, such as her vision of gathering an ‘army’ of carpenters and electricians for economic recovery, but she shone in others, such as when she eviscerated Bill C-51, accused Harper of ‘cherry-picking his data’ on the environment and also when she pitched her party as an alternative in her closing remarks. Though it’s currently up in the air whether there are more debates, it was an interesting opening teaser to the campaign. However, the more important things tend to happen outside of debate forums, such as the unveiling of party platforms and policy announcements. That’s the real meat and potatoes of an election, and the voters are only just being served. Trevor Crawley is a reporter with the Cranbrook Daily Townsman

Opinion/Events
Faith when life is not black and white What’s Up? I have found that the older I get, the more I like the Psalms and the wisdom books Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes in the Bible. Genesis through Nehemiah tell the story of Israel, which begins with Adam and Eve, continues with Abraham and Sarah, introduces Moses and his siblings Aaron and Miriam who lead Israel from slavery to a new land. For about 550 years, Israel lives in the land, until they are eventually conquered by Babylon. They live in exile for about 70 years, and a small remnant returns to the land. At its heart, the story is that God forms a people of his own, delivers them from slavery, gives them a land and promises to be present if they remain faithful to the covenant. Obedience ensures perpetual presence in the land (which Deuteronomy calls “life”) and disobedience ensures eventual exile from the land (“death”). Now I get that the story is more complex than that tweet–sized summary, but as a broad overview of the story, it’s pretty accurate. It’s a black–and–white kind of story, a lesson to be learned, a story with a moral. But the Psalms and wisdom literature know life isn’t black and white. Life is messy, unpredictable, and often makes no sense. Psalms, Job and Ecclesiastes contain what Walter Brueggemann calls “Israel’s counter testimony.” They ask questions and debate the black and white storyline. Job loses everything he has except his life. The main story (Deuteronomy) says that such calamities are God’s response to disobedience. Yet we learn from Job that this is not the case. Ecclesiastes questions the “world order” God has made: nothing we do mat-
ters, since we all die and are driven to the point of madness at the thought of our futile existence. A number of psalms lament God’s absence in the world. Psalm 73 wonders how a just God can allow the wicked to prosper. Psalm 89 in effect calls God a liar when the Babylonians kill the last king in David’s line after God had promised that one of King David’s descendants would always be on the throne. That’s why I like these parts of the Bible. The older I get, the more I live where the main story makes less sense. Too much of life has happened. It’s messy, and for too many people, life becomes overwhelming. Job never really gets a Rev. Yme straightforward answer to Woensdregt his question about why he suffers. He proclaims his innocence, so why is God doing this? The answer he does get is essentially God saying, “I’m God, the Creator. You’re not.” Now some people think that means, “Be quiet you puny human. How dare you question the sovereign overlord of the universe?” I don’t think it means that. I read it quite differently. I hear God saying, “You are human, Job. You’re here on earth for a few moments. You can’t possibly comprehend how the universe works, or my part in it. The script of the sacred story is fine as far as it goes, but this world and my place in it aren’t constricted by it. You are not going to figure this out, Job.” In other words, this answer reminds us that human reason can only take us so far when it comes to God. Marcus Borg talked about there being something “More” in the universe, something beyond what our human senses could discern or fully un-
derstand. I think that’s what the Psalms and wisdom literature in the Old Testament all point to. For us, life can often be messy, hard, painful. Being human, we want to find a reason for the pain. But so many things happen as the result of natural forces which are neither good nor bad. They just are. Our environment doesn’t take moral considerations into account, even though that is such an essential part of what it means to be human. But the universe is largely deaf to our moral preoccupations. Tsunamis take out coastlands and tens of thousands of lives. Mudslides, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods hit with little or no warning. Our environment doesn’t care about the moral cost or its actions, and despite the occasional crackpot preacher on TV, God doesn’t cause these disasters. Why do these things happen? Because they do for natural reasons. Our cognitive skills can only take us so far in trying to find out why. Rather than blaming God or blaming anyone else for such events, the Psalms teach us to seek God a different way. The Psalms and Job and other wisdom literature laments and complains and questions. They teach us that faith is also about confronting and debating with God. Of the existence of the “More” in the universe, I have no doubt. The issue isn’t simply whether faith is or isn’t “reasonable”. The issue as I see it is whether we can accept that our cognitive abilities can grasp only a very small inkling of that “More”. The Psalms and wisdom literature model a different, trans–rational way of meeting that “More”. That’s why I like these books more and more. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Anglican Church in Cranbrook.
The consequences of petty divisions Trish Bartlett
I was not a sports fan back in high school. Even so, when both the junior and the senior high school football teams ended up in the regional finals, every student felt an obligation to go and support them, especially since it meant the afternoon off school. The school bussed all interested student to Ivor Wynn Stadium, the home of the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Not knowing the rules of the game, for the first half I was constantly asking my friends what was happening. By half time, I was able to follow the plays by myself. As the game progressed so did the emotions of the students on both sides. At one point near the end of the game, an opposing player was running the ball towards our end, and our entire side of the stadium rose as one and roared “Get him!”, “Stop him!” “Kill him!”. When I sat back down, I thought, why was I wanting someone I didn’t even know to be injured? For what? A ball? I realized I was experiencing for the first time, a taste of tribalism and I didn’t like it. Tribalism, “Us versus the Not-Us”, is what drives racism,
sexism, political and religious extremism and war. Cheering for a sports team is, at first glance, a relatively innocent activity, but when passions are aroused to the point where opposing fans fight or riots occur because ‘our’ team lost, then something is very wrong. Tribalism encourages us to take sides, to identify with one group of people over another. Tribalism isolates us from others and to think of them as something less than human. Listening to and participating in the chants and yelled insults at that game, made me realize by dehumanizing the opposing players, I was also dehumanizing myself. Even though I didn’t know it at the time, my actions drew me further away from God. The Orthodox Church has just celebrated the feast of the Transfiguration of Christ. It commemorates the time when Jesus took Peter, James and John to the mountain top to pray. As He was praying, He was filled with the uncreated light and Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Him. Moses represents the Law and those who are dead, since
Moses died before entering the promised land. Elijah represents the Prophets and the living since he was carried up to heaven alive. Jesus, as the fulfillment of all the Law and the Prophets, represents all people. Through His crucifixion and resurrection, He restores of all of creation, the living and the dead, back to God. The disciples were terrified not realizing they were witnessing the potential future of all of humanity; everyone transfigured by the uncreated light and restored to a right relationship with God by love. As a member of the body of Christ, this is my tribe, the tribe of humankind. But it’s not an “us and not-us” tribalism, it’s “Us and Not-Yet-Us”. There should be no division between me and anyone else, even if they do play for the opposing team. God loves me, and them, and we are to love each other. Christ calls all to salvation. He supplied me with all I need to build my mansion in heaven but I can’t build my mansion by myself. I need everyone around me, all the ‘us’ and the ‘not-yet-us’, to help. Every heavenly mansion
built is like an old-fashioned barn-raising event where the whole community would gather and build a barn in a day. In twenty days, twenty barns could be built. If each farmer tried to build his own barn by himself, probably no barns would be built. (And I speak from experience after having assisted my father build a 20 foot long shed/barn.) Salvation is a community event. The more barns I help build, the sooner my own barn will be completed. The more people I choose to love in Christ, whether they know Him or not, the closer I draw to God and to transfiguration. This is true tribalism, inviting those on the outside to come inside, to share life with the dying, to free the captives from bondage. This is the tribe of Christ, the tribe of love. Anastasia Bartlett is still not a sports fan, is the author of Glimpses of Glory and member of St. Aidan’s Orthodox Church in Cranbrook. A trio of archers continue to keep the East Kootenay on the national archery map. Darby Dean, Brittany Johnson and Adam Pitney are returning home with a pile of accolades from the 2015 Canadian National Archery Cham-
pionships in Winnipeg. Heading up the trio is Johnson, a native of Cranbrook, who was named Archery Canada Junior Female Athlete of the Year in addition to claiming a silver medal. Dean, a native of Kimberley, claimed two gold medals at the competition while Pitney, a native of Cranbrook,
snagged two silver medals to round out a strong weekend for the crew. “Once again these young archers showed the archery world what the Kootenays can do,” wrote coach Elaine Johnson via email. “All three archers have been working hard to achieve top Canadian ranking and are pleased with
their results.” The trio wished to extend their gratitude and thanks to all of their coaches for their roles in helping them find success. The 2015 Canadian National Archery Championships were hosted from Aug. 4 to 9 by Interlake Archers in Winnipeg.

The deal was announced Monday. The 6-foot, 214pound Gabrielle was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fourth round (105th overall) at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. In 66 games split between the Pats and Brandon Wheat Kings last season, Gabrielle stacked up 23 goals and 21 assists for 44 points. Zablocki spent 201415 playing for the Sherwood Park Crusaders, scoring 15 goals and adding 10 assists for 25
points in 55 games. Zablocki, a native of Wetaskiwin, Alta., was originally a fifth-round pick (109th overall) of the Cougars at the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. Notes: The Moose Jaw Warriors are likely going to training camp without their top pick from the CHL Import Draft. According to Matthew Gourlie of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald, forward Nikita A. Popugaev is expected to play the 2015-16 season with CSKA Moscow U-20.
TORONTO - Mark Buehrle isn’t letting the Blue Jays get ahead of themselves, despite their impressive 11game winning streak. The Toronto lefthander was solid for more than seven innings and Ryan Goins hit a home run as Toronto defeated the Oakland Athletics 4-2 on Thursday afternoon to continue their dominant run. Even though the Blue Jays have climbed from fourth to first in the American League East over the course of the streak, Buehrle remains cautious. “We’re trying to go out and win games but it’s going to end eventually,” he said. “Put me on record: we’re not going to win the rest of the games here on out. “Don’t like to talk about (the streak) and don’t really pay too much attention to it. Every day’s a new day. We go out there and try to play the best game that day and win that game.” Buehrle (13-5) had two strikeouts and allowed seven hits and two runs over seven-plus innings as Toronto (64-52) maintained a one-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East standings. Aaron Sanchez pitched a scoreless inning of relief while Roberto Osuna earned his 12th save of the season. Buehrle was dismissive of keeping an eye on the Yankees, who were scheduled to play the Indians on Thursday night. “I know guys score-
board watch and I’m a baseball fan so I watch what’s going on whether we’re in first or in last,” said Buehrle. “But I don’t think we need to have it on in the clubhouse and sit there rooting against the Yankees every game. “Whatever they’re going to do, it’s going to
happen.” The Blue Jays have a chance to widen the gap this weekend as the Yankees come to the Rogers Centre for a three-game series. Goins downplayed the matchup. “I don’t think it’s going to matter the rest of the season who’s in the other dugout,” said Goins. “We’ve still got to come here, we’ve got to play our game, we’ve got to pitch, we’ve got to hit and we’ve got to play defence.” Billy Burns hit a triple for Oakland (51-65), which has lost three straight, all in Toronto. Starting pitcher Jesse Chavez (6-12) struck out nine but allowed four runs and six hits over six innings. Drew Pomeranz and Fernando Rodriguez combined for two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Athletics. The decision to start Chavez against his former team came hours before the first pitch. Athletics ace Sonny Gray was scheduled but back
spasms kept him from playing. Chavez pitched in nine games for Toronto in 2012. Buehrle got in trouble early, loading the bases with no outs in the first. But Buehrle bore down, inducing a double play at home and first from Danny Valencia, then a Josh Phegley ground out to end the inning. “I think that when he got out of the bases-loaded jam, no outs, that really sums him up,” said Toronto manager John Gibbons. “He’s got that knack of making a big pitch and something good happening when he’s out there.” Kevin Pillar got Toronto on the board with a single to right field that brought home catcher Dioner Navarro and advanced Justin Smoak to second. Goins cashed in both baserunners with a towering shot over the right-field fence for a 4-0 Toronto lead. Oakland finally got to Buehrle in the eighth inning when Burns tripled to right field, sending Marcus Semien home. That run ended Buehrle’s day. He exited to a rousing standing ovation from the 46,902 in attendance, Toronto’s seventh sellout of the season. Sanchez came in from the bullpen to relieve Buehrle. Mark Canha drove in Burns with a groundout to second, making it 4-2. The second run was also charged to Buehrle as Burns got on base while he was still the pitcher of record. Sanchez escaped the inning without allowing any more runs. Osuna induced three popouts to end the game.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Make a resolution today that involves a loved one. You feel as if there is no time like the present to clear out a hassle. Tap into your imagination, and you will produce a different type of interaction. Be more upbeat than you have been in the past. Tonight: Christen the weekend well. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Express your caring to someone you really care about. Finally, you seem to have accepted this person as he or she is. A newfound peace has allowed this bond to evolve to a new depth and level of understanding. Tonight: Let the party begin. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You have a way of expressing yourself and knowing what you need. You might decide to change your communication style with one person. In doing this, you are giving both of you the space to grow. Often your expectations limit you. Tonight: Out and about.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You have become more aware of your budget and of the direction you would like to head in. Even still, you might have a hard time restricting your spending. Know that you have what it takes. You can make what you want happen. Tonight: Fun doesn’t have to cost much. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) A decision you make today is likely to last. Make choices that suit you, but also remain aware of the long-term implications involved. You have a good sense of direction that will guide you. Don’t allow someone to rain on your parade. Tonight: Know when to call it a night. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Take your time, and don’t feel as if you are being restricted. If your energy seems to be off, know that it could be because you’re exhausted. Take a break from the here and now. Decide to do yoga or some other relaxing activity. Tonight: Forget tonight. Think “weekend.” LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might want to rethink a de-
Tundra
cision regarding an important friendship. You also might want to jump on a situation and move forward with it. Follow through, and you will be delighted by the results. Don’t discourage a child or loved one. Tonight: Where your pals are. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You might be more in touch with your needs than you had thought possible. Nevertheless, you’ll have to put your best foot forward when dealing with a higher-up or older relative. Not everything is as it seems. Discussions are likely to be animated. Tonight: Leader of the gang. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You will open up to a new conversation revolving around a potential trip and/or different cultures. You could be involved in a personal matter that causes a lot of activity. You might want to head in a new direction. Don’t allow someone to stop you. Tonight: Follow the music. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You are more concerned about a loved one than you realize. Your conversations with this person
might not be effective, but only time will tell. Slow down and take time for yourself. Reassess the liabilities of a financial partnership if need be. Tonight: Make it early. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You might need to defer to someone else, even though you would rather not have to. Sometimes allowing others to see the results of their ideas is more important than letting them know that you feel they are heading in the wrong direction. Tonight: So many invitations. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You will accomplish a lot. Listen to what is being shared about a key project. Though you might want to relax and head out, you are better off completing what you are doing. You will start the weekend in a clearer frame of mind. Tonight: Say “yes” to an offer. BORN TODAY Actress Halle Berry (1966), football player Tim Tebow (1987), comedian Steve Martin (1945)

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I follow you on Facebook. I am 18 years old and have been with my boyfriend for more than a year. We used to spend a bit too much time together and I know it wasn’t healthy, so we worked it out and now have new hobbies and see our friends a little more. Everything is good except for one thing: His mother. She is recently divorced and when my boyfriend and I were spending a lot of time at her place, she was upset and miserable. We understood, so we would make dinner for her and keep the house clean, but she would never come out of her room. My boyfriend and I would eat dinner and converse. One day, his mother came into the kitchen and apparently, saw this closeness as a threat. She complained that she wasn’t getting any attention from her son and that I was stealing him away from her. She prohibited me from coming over for three weeks, which my boyfriend and I found hurtful. She still complains about me, saying I give her dirty looks (I would never do that) and that I ignore her, even when I say hello every time I see her. I get that she doesn’t like me, so I try not to engage her too often. But she also tries to sabotage our dates, saying my boyfriend can’t go out with me because he has some important family dinner, which is usually a lie. Sometimes, she calls in the middle of a date and tells him to come home right away and that sort of thing. The worst part, though, is that she has such a strong influence on my boyfriend that he is beginning to believe she knows what is best for him and that maybe we should break up. This devastates me. She is ruining our relationship and bringing stress into my boyfriend’s life. I don’t know whether to speak to her about her behavior or leave it alone. I fear I’m not going to win this. -- Lost Dear Lost: You won’t win if your boyfriend doesn’t back you up. His mother seems very clingy, and this may be due to the divorce or it may be that she would not like any girl her son dated. Talk to your boyfriend. Let him know that if he doesn’t defend you to his mother, the relationship is over. Because, Honey, it will be. Dear Annie: I appreciate your advice to “Torn Son,” whose father is abusing alcohol, and the son suspects he is also using drugs. I am a member of a local 12-step program organized to help people and families under the stress of having an addicted loved one. You recommended Al-Anon and Adult Children of Alcoholics. Please add to your list “Families Anonymous” which was founded in 1971 and is a national and international self-help group. There is no cost to attend our meetings. -Outreach Coordinator Dear Coordinator: We have recommended Families Anonymous in this space before and we are happy to mention it again. It is a fine organization for those whose loved ones are addicted to alcohol or drugs. Interested readers can contact the organization at familiesanonymous. org. Top Ten Reasons to Advertise in a Newspaper 1. Advertise to Reach New Customers. Your market changes constantly. Advertising is tremendously helpful in directing customers to the product and services they need, and helps put you ahead of your competition.
2. Your Competition Isn’t Quitting. You’ve got to advertise to get your share of business or lose it to the stores that do. If you cut back on your advertising, you may forfeit new prospective customers to your competition.
3. Advantage Over Competitors Who Cut Back. A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found that advertisers who maintained or expanded advertising during a troubled economy saw sales increase an average of 100%.

4. Continuous Advertising Strengthens Your Image. When people who postpone buying come back to the marketplace, you’ve got a better chance of getting their business if you’ve continued to maintain a solid, reliable image.
5. Direct Advertising is Cost Efficient. Direct has the advantages – demographic and geographic numbers to afford advertisers the best value and exposure for their advertising dollar.
6. Advertise to Generate Traffic. Continuous traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of buyers. The more people who contact you, the more possibilities you have to make sales.
7. Advertise to Make More Sales. Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You’ll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful.

In a troubled economy, rumors and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects gossip, shoots down false reports and projects positively.
10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale. When advertising and promotion are cut, salespeople become less motivated. They may believe the store is cutting back, even going out of business.
