Special Olympics were looking for a celebrity to lend his name to their fundraising golf tournament. But they weren’t expecting the name to be Howie Meeker. The 27th annual Howie Meeker Special Olympics Golf Classic tees off this Saturday at Storey Creek Golf Course, with the former NHL All-Star and Hall of Fame broadcaster scheduled to meet and greet players and donors. Though Meeker has surpassed
a quarter century of involvement with the tournament, the job was initially supposed to go to someone else. “The fellas that started the golf classic had a special meeting,” said Meeker, 91. “I was invited to it, maybe because I had some contacts to maybe get some players from the Canucks to put their name to it.” But Meeker, who was then

Vancouver Island is in a stage 4 drought. But Campbell River isn’t. And people are asking why. They’re asking Coun. Larry Samson all the time. And he’s getting tired of it and wants the city to do a better job of explaining it to the public. Because they keep asking. People are asking “why aren’t we at stage 2, why aren’t we at stage 3,” a frustrated Samson said at Monday’s city council meeting. “I think we need to communicate this a little better to the public.” Samson had given council a notice of motion on July 22 asking for city staff to take a more proactive approach to explaining the current water restrictions to city residents. In the interim, Samson hasn’t seen anything come out from the city explaining why it’s not on a higher water restriction level. Community interest in the water restrictions is high, if social media is anything to go by. There are frequent comments on Facebook about people watering their lawns when there is a drought going on and some of the debate goes to the level of threats to turn people in to authorities. various local levels of government of contravening water restrictions themselves by watering lawns at public facilities. The problem with these “debates” is that the city is not in as dire water straits as the rest of Vancouver Island and is currently only on Stage 1 water restrictions. That’s because Campbell River’s source of water is a massive chain of lakes and reservoirs. “Our watershed isn’t the same as other watersheds,” Coun. Charlie Cornfield said. “Our watershed is a huge watershed.” Cornfield wasn’t saying residents shouldn’t try to conserve water – they should observe the current water restrictions – but his point was that the city’s water system is not under the same pressure other Island cities are. The situation is exemplified by the fishing ban that is currently in place on Vancouver Island streams and rivers – except for the Quinsam, Campbell and Qualicum rivers. Those rivers are not under a fishing ban because their water levels are not considered dangerous to fish. Samson said things like the fact that the city is only a small user of the water in the system is not well

announcing Canucks games for BCTV, was unable to recruit any of the Canucks, who claimed “they were all busy in August.” Even a desperation attempt to recruit a player or two from the Toronto Maple Leafs, the franchise Meeker helped win four Stanley Cups and later coached, left him empty-handed. “About then, somebody came up with the idea we call it the Howie Meeker Classic. They got to the bottom of the barrel and were left with Howie Meeker,” he said with a cackle familiar to viewers of his broadcasts on BCTV and, before that, on Hockey Night in Canada. It is a decision neither Meeker nor classic organizers have regretted. For the classic’s first 10 years, he and his wife Grace traveled each year to Campbell River, where he greeted each player and took a tee shot for each foursome at Storey Creek’s signature 17th hole. After he lost Grace to cancer he remarried, and now brings his second wife, Leah. “It’s something we’ve

The event itself if really fun, and it’s for one of the best reasons in the world. “If you’ve got a dollar you want to put on something, Special Olympics is as good as it gets.” Eventually, he gave up his tee shot in favour

of a putt for each team on the 17th, and for the first time, even that may not be possible this weekend. “I’ve got two wonky knees, and I’m looking to get braces for ‘em,” he said. “We’ll work something out. I thought if I was able to walk from a tent or a position on the 17th (hole), I could meet people that way. If not, maybe I’ll go
around in a cart and greet folks.” Despite his age and failing vigour — Meeker is the last surviving member of the Maple Leafs’ 1947 Stanley Cupwinning team — he will remain a part of the classic as long as he can make the trip up from Parksville. And it’s not the only benefit tournament he has lent his support to. A tourney at Fairwinds Golf Club in Nanoose Bay has raised more than $300,000 for BC Guide Dogs over the past four years. But he will always have a special place in his heart for the “original” Howie Meeker Classic and the athletes it was created to benefit. “The good Lord may have shortchanged them in some ways, but He more than made up for it in a lot of others,” Meeker said. “I’ve been there 27 years and it’s all first-name basis. I’ve watched some of them grow up and some of them turn gray. “But there comes a time when it’s payback time, and if there’s something I can do to help out, I’m glad to do it. I can’t do enough for ‘em.”

here are few people still around who would have seen Howie Meeker play hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs. But the 91-yearold Parskville resident retains a fan base nonetheless. “It’s funny,” he said. “In the last three or four days our neighbours have had visitors come in from all over Canada, and at some point they mentioned Howie Meeker lived next door. And I guess some of them said, ‘Howie Meeker! Lord thunder Jesus, can we meet him?’” It was that manner of speech which made him a household name in Canada in the 1970s and 80s, when he served as colour commentator for Hockey Night in Canada, BCTV and TNT before his retirement in 1998. It was that broadcasting career which earned him a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame, though he also had an accomplished, if brief, career as an NHL player and coach. And as an MP in parliament, where he remains unbeaten in
political elections. Meeker broke into the NHL with the Leafs in the 1946-47 season, scoring 27 goals and 45 points and was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year. He also helped Toronto to the first of three consecutive Stanley Cups and finished his career having hoisted the cup four times in six seasons with the team. In his final season in the NHL, he doubled as a Progressive Conservative MP after winning a by-election in the Ontario riding of Waterloo South in June of 1951. He declined to run again in 1953 and has never returned to electoral politics. As a broadcaster on Hockey Night in Canada, he was known for his distinctive squeaky voice and Newfoundlander-inflected colloquialisms. But he left a mark, providing more insightful analysis than was common at the time and introducing the telestrator to demonstrate points, essentially ushering in the modern era of televised hockey.

understood by the public. “The city consumes roughly 0.4 metres per second,” Samson said. “We don’t use a lot of the water that comes out of the river.” The Campbell River watershed begins in the mountains in the centre of Strathcona Park and flows into Buttle and Upper Campbell lakes behind the Strathcona Dam and then into Lower Campbell, John Hart and McIvor Lakes before flowing over the Ladore and John Hart dams and Elk Falls and into the Campbell River itself before flowing out to sea. It is an approximately 70-kilometre long water system. The system’s water levels are impacted by the drought conditions on Vancouver Island. On July 27 BC Hydro, which controls the water system through three hydroelectric facilities, announced that there wouldn’t be enough water passing into the lower system to meet fish habitat and electricity generation. Consequently, it was allowing water to flow through Strathcona Dam so that it could raise the water level of the Lower Campbell/John Hart/ McIvor lakes reservoir. That would fill the res-
ervoir to the point where BC Hydro would have enough water for 32 days should there be an interruption in the flow of water from power loss to Strathcona Dam, resulting in the dam’s spillways closing, or from the level of water behind the dam dropping due to drought to a point where it couldn’t flow over the lip of the spillway. Earlier in the summer, the city expressed concern that residents were using water at an unsustainable rate and announced that if voluntary efforts to restrict water use weren’t made, the city would have to impose higher levels of water restriction. “Our people responded exceptionally well,” Cornfield said. “There’s no need for increased restriction.” In June, Mayor Andy Adams congratulated residents on taking measures to conserve water. “The city greatly appreciates the marked diligence by local residents during our current stage one watering restrictions, and we hope to delay a stage two watering restriction for as long as possible by reminding residents to be aware of their water use and keep demand to a minimum,” Adams said at the time. “Keeping our water use

within the limit allows us to meet the water demand for domestic water use across the system as well as potential firefighting.” But Samson said he is still fielding calls from the public demanding an explanation as to why Campbell River is not at higher water restrictions. He wanted to know when city staff will implement “enhanced communications” with the public. There should be ads and press releases in the media, he said. “It hasn’t been front and centre in the newspaper,” Samson said. “The newspaper” has

covered the drought extensively but most of it has been from BC Hydro’s point of view because the utility maintains an aggressive flow of information due to the sensitivity in the community surrounding water levels in the Campbell River and the impact on fish habitat and electrical generation. Also, Hydro has embarked on a billion-dollar facility upgrade that impacts the water system. City staff couldn’t give Samson an exact answer on when an enhanced communication program would be seen. The information is

already available to the public through mailouts and on the city’s website, although getting the information from the website is challenging. It’s not immediately obvious from the city’s home page (campbellriver.ca) where to begin looking for water restrictions. Use of the search function using the term “water restrictions” results in a couple of news releases stating “Still in effect: Watering restrictions in Campbell River.” There is also information under a “frequently asked questions” section under the “City Services” heading. One of the topics is “Water restrictions and water sprinkling FAQ.” A sample of relevant questions under the heading are: n How does a drought affect lake levels and the amount of water available to the City? “The lakes in the Campbell River watershed are capable of storing water for the drier summer months. The levels of these reservoirs are controlled by BC Hydro as per their water license and the Campbell River System Water Use Plan. Due to the size of the watershed, the amount of water withdrawn for the

City’s water system has a negligible impact on lake levels as long as the water consumption is kept within reasonable limits. As of July 22, 2015, the community has successfully kept consumption low enough that any benefits to lake levels if further restrictions were imposed would be nondetectable.” n How does the City determine when to implement higher stages of restrictions? “During the summer season, the City closely monitors water use. The decision to implement higher stages of restrictions considers the water use patterns and weather forecasts. Increased restrictions are generally triggered by sustained water consumption over the domestic water allowance combined with forecasts of increasing temperatures. Higher restrictions can also be triggered by specific situations such as an interface fire, significant failure of the water sys-

The first, and perhaps the only complete English-language debate in this long federal election campaign has helped define the issues, and the non-issues. I’m not going to try to tell you who “won” or “came out swinging,” because this is not a sporting event. If you’re paying attention in August, bless you, and you probably have a favourite already. First, let’s deal with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s diabolical scheme to extend the length of the formal election period. This, according to national pundits, is an extension of his evil plot to attract more financial supporters than the other parties, and spend the money. In other words, it’s a non-issue and any opponent who dwells on it looks like a whiner. This is the first election in modern Canadian history to follow a four-year schedule. National pundits spent months telling us Harper was going to use a loophole in his own election law to call a spring vote before the economy tanked. Didn’t happen, and now the Conservatives are rightly under scrutiny about their economic

management. Incumbent manipulation of election timing is over, and that’s good. Scheduled elections by their nature create longer campaigns, as demonstrated in B.C. and the United States. So they should be conducted under formal campaign rules, which limit the noise of public sector unions and other special interests. Another nonissue is the nonexistent deficit and recession that supposedly grips Canada. On actual results, there is a slim surplus, and if – a big if – Saudi Arabia continues to depress world oil prices, there may be a modest deficit by next spring. The Bank of Canada’s recent move to devalue the dollar has already produced a rebound in exports and tourism, which any government would appreciate. Have you tried to find parking at the mall lately? Of particular interest to B.C. voters is the contest between

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and Green Party leader Elizabeth May. May used what may be her only national debate appearance to press Mulcair to oppose the TransMountain pipeline expansion project before hearings are complete. B.C. M i n d f u l o f Ad r i a n D i x ’s disastrous 2013 decision to do the same in B.C., Mulcair insisted he would wait for the federal review, even though he considers it to be inadequate. This is, of course, all theatre. Based on their actions, the NDP, Green Party and Liberals are all opposed not just to oil pipelines but export gas pipelines as well. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau wants to cancel capital cost allowances for liquefied natural gas investment that have been granted by B.C. and Ottawa, which could be a deal-breaker for LNG. B.C. How does the old saying go: you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink? Wiser comedians than we can make that into a witty comment related to the current situation with people’s understanding of water restrictions in Campbell River. But the frustration Coun. Larry Samson expressed at Monday’s city council meeting over the calls he has to field regarding water restrictions in the city is no joke, to him at least. Samson served a notice of motion on July 22 that city staff prepare a “comprehensive water restrictions communications plan.” The reason for that motion was the frequent questions Samson receives from the public wondering why the city has not upgraded its water restrictions to a higher level, given the We say: Water drought conditions being restrictions experienced on Vancouver Island. are not clearly The reason, of course, understood is that greater restrictions are not needed. That doesn’t mean the current level of conservation city residents are implementing on a voluntary basis can be relaxed. It’s just that we have the luxury of drawing our city water from a massive lake, reservoir and river system. Again, water levels are at record lows but there is still enough water in the system, frankly, thanks to BC Hydro’s management of the huge water supply. The power utility’s most recent action filled the Lower Campbell-John Hart reservoir to the point where they have a 32-day supply of water at current levels. If the Strathcona Dam spillway gates were to close then water levels in the lower river and Campbell River’s water supply could continue for 32 days before further action would be taken. Samson’s frustration arises out of the lack of understanding in the public about this system and he felt the city should be more proactive in getting that information out. There is an implication that the media, i.e., the paper, i.e., the Campbell River Mirror should be getting that word out as well. And that raises some issues. The main one being that that information has been put out there by both city staff and the newspaper. The information is available on the city’s website, in stories on our website and in city mailouts. The problem is one that we in this business see all the time and that is, you can often put out all the information you want but if the public isn’t reading it or making an effort to access it, then they’re not going to learn anything about the issue. This is the place where that adage about leading the horse to water comes in. You see it often in social media these days where people can comment on things at the drop of a hat without having adequate knowledge of the issue. And that whips up a furor. Also, city public hearings often have people coming before council regarding some zoning or other change happening and expressing the complaint that they hadn’t heard anything about this. There is confusion out there about water restrictions and why we haven’t gone to a higher level. We’ve put it on the front page. Will the questions cease? We’ll find out.

sion last week, in a letter filed with the National Energy Board. But we’re expected to believe that Mulcair has a different position, for now. Harper was forced to admit that his long effort to persuade U.S. President Barack Obama to approve the Keystone XL pipeline has failed, and the project will have to wait until Obama leaves office next year. The debate also confirmed positions on Canada’s modest role in bombing Islamic State terrorist positions in Iraq and Syria. The Conservatives are for it, and the Liberals, NDP and Greens are against it. Trudeau set the stage for the contest in Quebec, which B.C. voters can only watch from afar to see if it once again decides the shape of their federal government. Trudeau pushed Mulcair on his cynical bid to court the separatist voters who suddenly swung to Jack Layton’s NDP in 2011. Like petroleum prices, it’s beyond our control. With an exchange of gifts at the new Campbell River Band office Friday, Wei Wai Kum Chief Robert Pollard and Steve Thompson, Minister of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations, signed a woodland licence agreement designed to enhance employment and economic opportunities in the region. The 25-year First Nat i o n s w o o d l a n d licence allows the Wei Wai Kum to harvest almost 9,900 cubic metres of timber per year from their traditional territories. The agreement covers a 2,414 hectare parcel of Crown land near Heydon Bay on B.C.’s south central mainland coast and another 1,212 hectares by Pye Lake, north of Campbell River. “We have enjoyed

Since then, the province has signed forestry agreements with 177 First Nations providing $382 million in revenuesharing and providing access to 180 million cubic metres of timber. Thompson said Friday’s agreement followed nearly a year and a half of negotiations between the province and the Wei Wai Kum, a process that began with putting forest tenure operations and revenue-sharing agreements in place. “It ultimately moves to a First Nations woodland license, which gives them their own specific area-based tenure for 25 years and which provides the longer-term security to make investment and build capacity in their community,” he said.

Praise for SAR after ‘very smooth’ Ripple Rock Trail extraction MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Campbell River dental hygienist Dori Davis had hiked the Ripple Rock trail before, but not for a few years. On Monday, she and a friend, along with their two dogs, headed out on the popular route in the light morning drizzle about 7 a.m. They reached the end of the trail, enjoyed the vistas, and began to head back around 8:30. The trail was a bit wet from the rain, and Davis slipped on a “larger, smooth rock.” She knew she was injured, but didn’t think it was that bad, and she tried to continue up the trail but was unable to put any weight on her right leg. After a rest, she tried again. But it was broken. Davis had cell service, thankfully, and called her husband, who called BC Ambulance. BC Ambulance, however, only goes as far as trail heads, so Campbell River Search and Rescue (SAR) was called. SAR sprung to action, extracting Davis from the bluffs overlooking Seymour Narrows with the help of a helicopter. “Her ankle was twisted to the point where she couldn’t put any weight on it whatsoever,” said Daryl Beck, search manager for the extraction. They weren’t sure the helicopter extraction would work. There isn’t a lot of open area in which to land a chopper up there. “We had a secondary option on standby, which was a marine extraction should we be unable to get to them with the chopper,” Beck said. The marine extraction option would have involved transporting the injured woman down to the water by stretcher and then by boat back to civilization, but the team “managed to find a spot on the bluffs to put the helicopter down.” Beck said from the time they got the call until the woman was placed in the ambulance

back at the Campbell River spit, where they met the helicopter, was “within two hours,” and called the operation a “very smooth extraction.” While two hours might seem like an eternity for someone on the side of a trail with an injury, Beck said it’s important they plan properly to avoid complications while on scene that could cause an extraction to take even longer. “We have to look at what resources we need to do it right, what kind of manpower is available, what our options are, and then we have to make sure we’re deploying the proper volunteers with the proper skill sets in their proper roles
before we can even head out. The last thing we want to do is put anyone else in danger when we’re out there.” The woman’s hiking companion, along with her husband – who had since gone out to the scene – were able to hike out of the area on their own, but were cold and tired from the ordeal. “This was just supposed to be a day trip, but you should always be prepared should anything go wrong,” Beck said, including bringing extra food and water, light blankets and jackets as well as having a fully charged cellphone. “It seems far more common these days for people to actually have cell service where they
are going should they need help,” Beck said. “I was able to speak with the woman from my home while she was on the trail before I even headed into the hall,” which helped him coordinate the team’s efforts much more quickly. “I feel very lucky for how very well I was taken care of today,” Davis said after the ordeal. “From the moment I fell and we realized I couldn’t walk, to being fortunate enough to have cell service and then the standard of care I received with first communication from the SARs then the pick up and delivery to the ambulance. They seemed to truly care that I was comfortable. “A sincere thanks to all
of the amazing people who helped me today.” She recommends that everyone heading out into nature, even for a short hike, be prepared for all eventualities. “Our saving grace was that we had jackets due to the rain to keep me
warm – thank goodness it stopped raining – and I brought a day pack with me which included an external battery charger for my cell phone which both of us needed to use to keep the cell phones going. I’ll be adding tensor bandages to my pack
once I can walk again,” she said. Don’t expect Davis to be off the trails for long. As soon as her leg is mended, she’ll be heading back out. “I still think morning hikes are the best way to start the day,” she said.

Often taking care of a loved one is a responsibility that is added into an already crowded schedule. It can entail driving to and from doctor appointments, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning up or just checking in on a daily basis to be sure the proper medications are being taken and the dishes are washed. In some instances, a lengthy commute to be sure all is in order is part of the routine. Providing care and support for another household can add hours to an already demanding day. How d does Monthly Giving Work?
Can I advertise in other markets in BC with the Campbell River Mirror?
How can I support someone who is depressed? Depression is very common. Often people don’t know what to say, and offer such advice as, Just get over it…. Think more positively… or Stop being so negative… which, while well intentioned, only serves to leave Frances Ferguson, M.Ed. the person feeling more isolated Registered Clinical and alone. Counsellor It helps to learn about depression, and websites such as www.depressionhurts.ca can be helpful. Emotional suffering is caused by many biological, psychological, and environmental factors, and a high percentage of depression is situational. Depression is not something a person can simply shake, or think their way out of, and thankfully, most depression can be effectively treated. People need to be encouraged to ask for help from a professional. Listening with compassion, helping with practical tasks, and generosity of friendship are other good ways to show your concern and help your friend or loved one.

It is an Insurance Agents fiduciary responsibility to review client’s life insurance contracts to ensure they still meet the needs of the client. This is easily done on our end if the client is a full planning client, so we can sneak in the Darlene Garat insurance review during an RRSP Financial Advisor appointment, or RRIF rollover, not so easy when insurance only clients don’t understand the need. It is important to know that insurance is not a “buy it and forget it” product as much as people would like to think. Insurance rates change, client’s health changes, and financial needs change. Life Insurance is an important part of a financial plan and needs to be reviewed regularly. It is important to note that insurance should not to be replaced if there are better options, but rather, the rest of your financial plan should be tweaked around it to ensure you are properly protected.
How does respite care help caregivers?
Do I need to have a lot of money to see a Financial Advisor? On the contrary. While some Financial Advisors may only take clients with minimum assets, there are Darlene & Peter Garat Advisors who are happy to help people embark on financial planning. Many of our clients see us for the first time before they have done any real focused planning, although they may have a small RRSP at a bank from a random purchase, or have lender placed mortgage insurance. Typically these clients have never have dealt with a Financial Advisor who is capable and licensed to help them in all areas of financial planning. A good Advisor will help you “find the money” through cash flow planning, and tax planning – and help you grow and protect your assets over time. If you are serious about creating a solid financial future, regardless of where you are now, we would love discuss it with.

Canadian Blood Services provides a safe, secure, cost-effective, affordable and accessible supply of quality blood, blood products and their alternatives. Canada is selfsufficient in blood and we are working to be self-reliant in plasma. Emerging risks and best practices are monitored continuously. Our blood and blood products are safe and of quality. When you give blood, you give life. Life for surgical patients, hemophiliacs, accident victims and cancer patients. It may even mean life for you or a family member someday. It’s so easy to do and takes only a few minutes, yet it means so much. What’s Your Blood Type? Everyone has two genes that determine their blood type, it’s passed on from parents to children, just like eye colour. While each parent has two genes, they contribute only one apiece. This process of combination can sometimes lead to children having different blood types than their parents. This chart shows your possible blood type based on the type of your parents. O negative (O-) is the universal donor type, which means it can be transfused to anyone in need. That’s why it’s always in high demand — it’s used in emergency situations when there is no time to test a patient’s blood type.
Blood Donar
People with AB+ blood are known as universal recipients, meaning they can receive blood from anyone.

CAMPBELLTON 7x14
CNA Community Garden enjoys successful start-up By John Twigg, Secretary, Campbellton Neighbourhood Association It's official: the Campbellton Neighbourhood Association's new community garden is now a success. All 22 plots in the garden (on 15th near Petersen) are now rented, planted and sprouting even though it all started rather late in the spring season and was built almost entirely by volunteers using mainly donated or discounted materials such as rough-cut yellow cedar box sidings, mounds of organic soil and many rolls of wire fencing. Plus the City of Campbell River donated the land (part of an existing under-used park) as well as doing the critical water connection. The warm dry weather proved to be a boon to the late-starting vegetables such as greens, beans and beets (as well as many other interesting crops including some tree seedlings put there temporarily by Greenways Land Trust to get some better sun) and now the focus has shifted to finishing the gate hand-made from driftwood by Councillor Ron Kerr, enclosing a small shed for tools and adding a sitting and meeting area under the shade of some trees. While growing food is the main focus of the garden facility there also are several very important social purposes, especially providing an opportunity for Campbellton residents and business people to meet and interact and thereby build community spirit. And as CNA chair Brian Shaw has noted, the garden also provides the four-years-old CNA and community people with tangible proof that working together on common interests can deliver real improvements that benefit everyone, which he hopes will
help the CNA advance some of its other pending projects such as improving public access to the Campbell River's shoreline, adding a tourist feature on the Inland Island Highway near 14th Street and potentially adding a new visitor information centre between Tamarack and Willow Streets on the Old Island Highway.

Next year the CNA is planning to add another 24 plots to the garden (with room for them made by moving a set of swings to a new corner) so there will be another opportunity for new participants to join the existing group; the garden also will have its own management committee separate from the CNA executive.
Meanwhile the CNA will continue its efforts to get lighting and pedestrian improvements throughout the neighbourhood, among other initiatives. For further information brianthepiper@gmail.com or 8807 .

The recent CNA column on the uncertain future of the dear old Quinsam Hotel generated quite a bit of feedback, with several writers wishing for a revival of its live-music venue and some supporting the notion of converting it to various community uses, including housing and transportation. The now-closed hotel property is still owned by the We Wai Kai (Cape Mudge) Band, which moved the hotel's liquorstore licence to its properties at Quinsam Crossing several years ago. The CNA is continuing to monitor that and numerous other issues in the area and it welcomes input on all of them. » » » »

Port McNeill teen Dawn Briscoe bears down in the ladies single buck competition during the annual Logger Sports at Nunn’s Creek Park Sunday. At left, Denis Yarjou of Campbell River flings aside a cookie in the obstacle pole bucking event.
Logger keeps stiff upper lip
Campbell River’s Dave MacLeod spent a busy weekend helping organize the annual Salmon Festival Logger Sports competition at Nunns Creek Park. On Friday he picked up a hammer to help five-year-old Tyler Yon drive nails in the youth event, then grabbed a double-buck saw and filled the breach for a shorthanded team in the annual Media Challenge relay. At the close of Sunday’s main show, he doffed a floppy hat and tourist garb for a comedy routine that ended with his fall from a 90-foot pole. Oh, and in between he managed to win the overall logger title, snare a world championship and, perhaps most impressive of all, leave announcer Ben Lefler speechless. Nicknamed “The ‘Stach” by Lefler, a loquacious New Zealander, MacLeod stunned the Kiwi and most of his fellow competitors during introductions by jogging

onto the grounds clean-shaven for the first time in anyone’s memory. Lefler quickly recovered from his shock to bestow a new nickname: Dave “No Mo” MacLeod, and the games were on. MacLeod won the men’s Axe Throw, the Grand Prairie Accuracy Cut and the open Choker Race, which was held as a world championship event. He added top-three finishes in four more events to claim the overall points title among the men. Another world championship went to Stirling Hart of Maple Ridge and Jesse Whitehead of New Zealand, who teamed to win the Open Two-man Relay in the standing and horizontal chop. Whitehead doubled up with a Canadian championship in the open Springboard Chop, and Carson Bischoff of Celista, B.C., won the Canadian title in the open Obstacle Pole event. Danielle Tkach of High Level,
AB, was the women’s overall winner, with wins in the Underhand Chop, the Single Buck and the Jack & Jill Double Buck, teamed with Hart. One Canadian championship was held in the women’s competition, with Katelan Steward of Chetwynd winning the title in the Choker Race. The competition drew an international field with competitors from across Canada, the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. North Islanders held their own, with three Port McNeill competitors winning events. Nick Russell won the open Stock Saw, the open Single Buck and teamed with Joe Whalen to claim the open Double Buck. And teenage sisters Allison and Dawn Briscoe each got wins, with Allison claiming the Ladies Axe Throw and Dawn teaming with Steward for top spot in the Double Buck. Mackenzie Padington of Campbell River won one national championship and added a pair of silver medals as a small delegation from the Campbell River Killer Whales swim club posted a strong showing in the Canadian AgeGroup Championships in Quebec City. Six members of the club competed in the meet and all of them brought home medals. Padington, 16, won the 100-metre breast stroke in the 16-18 age group, and added runner-up
finishes in both the 200 freestyle and the 200 individual medley. In all, Padington reached the finals in seven events and finished in a fourth-place tie for aggregate scoring in her age group. Conner Skuse, competing in the male 15-year age group, also won a pair of silvers. He placed second in both the 100 and 200 individual medleys, which combine the butterfly, backstroke, breast stroke and freestyle. Skuse, the only male
swimming for the Killer Whales, reached the finals in eight of his nine events and tied for eighth place in aggregate scoring in his age group. His 136 points also placed the Killer Whales 34th in team scoring among 100 male teams. Four more swimmers — Jamiliya Wellard, Jasmine Skuse, Melayna Beaudin and Cianna Dunn — combined to win bronze in the girls 14-under 4x200 freestyle relay. Jasmine Skuse also snared an individual bronze in the age 13 200
breast stroke. She and Wellard, competing in the 13-year-old division, and Beaudin and Dunn, in the age 14 group, all reached the finals at least once in their individual events. Added to Padington’s total, that gave the Killer Whales a 15th-place showing in the female team standings and the club placed 19th among 128 clubs across the country in the combined team standings. See Killer Whales results at www.campbellrivermirror.com.
Rain returns to Saratoga
Looking for relief from the drought of 2015? Apparently the trick is to visit Saratoga Speedway. For the third time in a fiveweekend stretch, racing was cancelled due to heavy rains which fell throughout Saturday. The cancellation sidelined the Wilroc Lite Sprint cars, I.M.C.A Modifieds
and the Bomber cars — and it was the second straight washout for the Modifieds and Bombers. Extra laps … This weekend Saratoga welcomes back the Big Rig Highway Thunder. Trucks from across Vancouver Island will make the trip to put their rigs on display. The second Boat Race of
the year will also be on the card; Sheldon Hopp took home the crown in the first Boat Race, giving him a huge target on his back this time. Accompanying the Big Rigs and Crash to Pass cars will be the Hornet cars and the Roadrunners, with Bailey’s Western Star sponsoring the festivities.

Rugby standouts lead Team BC
Campbell River’s Josef Dirom, 14, squeezes past a pair of Alberta U15 tacklers in last weekend’s Western Canadian U14/U15 Rugby Tournament in Kelowna.
Team BC’s U14 Boys side struggled to a thirdplace finish in the Western Canadian Rugby Championships last weekend in Kelowna, but Campbell River’s contribution to the BC Rugby Union’s squad held up their end of the play. Riory Young of Southgate Middle School, 13, scored two of the four tries scored by B.C. in matches against the Alberta U15 and Washington U15 clubs participating. Local teammate Josef Dirom of Ecole Phoenix, 14, added a third try for
the side. Young has a strong base of conditioning, thanks to tough practices with Campbell River Athletic Association, North Island Tsunami Rugby Academy, and additional coaching from local MMA gym, Pure Martial Arts. Dirom, 14, uses incredible speed, largely built through soccer, and was one of the top point scorers in the recent provincial Rugby Championships in Burnaby and the Victoria International Youth 7s Tournament, an amazing accomplish-

Nominations soon close for annual Stewardship Awards MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The deadline is looming to nominate people, organizations, businesses or industries within our region who have taken positive environmental action over the past year. The City of Campbell River’s annual Stewardship Awards are the City’s way of “showing our appreciation to the citizens of Campbell River who inspire others to conserve and restore our environment,” according to Mayor Andy Adams. “We are recognizing a diverse range of people who dedicate their time to making our city a greener and more vibrant community.” The awards are categorized to celebrate different types of environmental efforts and strategies. Av id wa l kers or cyclists could be nominated in the “Air Quality/Alternative Transportation” category, for example, while an organization working to rebuild or restore wildlife habitat could be nominated in “Habitat Protection/Creation.” There is also a “Youth Special Recognition” category celebrating
young people who are taking up the cause of environmental protection, and there is another special recognition for youth involved in protection or conservation.

White Spot fundraiser provides summer camp for kids Buccaneers both young and young-at-heart can re-live childhood memories today (Aug. 12) by ordering an Adult Pirate Pak at White Spot restaurants – including Campbell River’s. Pirate Pak Day has become an anticipated annual tradition that has raised a total of $347,172 since its inception and sent more than 100 children to Zajac Ranch for Children, a charity that provides kids and young adults with lifethreatening illnesses and chronic disabilities a unique summer camp experience, according to a release by White Spot. “Pirate Pak Day is a big event for us, one that both our staff and guests look forward to every year,” says White Spot President Warren Erhart. “Community initiatives like Pirate Pak Day help us offer illnessspecific camps that put smiles of the faces of these kids. For instance, many of our campers get to ride a horse for the first time in their life,” says Mel Zajac, founder of Zajac Ranch for
Children. On Aug. 12 only, Adult Pirate Paks are available for both dine-in and take-out, in four options: Legendary Burger, BC

R.W. (Sandy) Matheson
Passed away suddenly on August 3, 2015 at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife Betty and stepson George, daughters Sandra and Sophie; grandchildren Rob, Heather and Andrea, greatgrandchildren Tyler, Cameron, and Isabella as well as many nieces and nephews. Sandy was a former resident of Quadra Island where he was involved in the Ĺľshing industry for many years. He then moved to Horseshoe Bay to work for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans as a skipper on one of their research vessels until his retirement. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. No service by request.
Thelma Gertrude Bath June 17, 1915- August 4, 2015 We sadly say goodbye to the Best Mom, Granny “Goose and Friend there ever was. We will miss you always but you will be in our hearts forever. You made it to 100 Years Old just like you said you would. You were always there to lend us a helping hand and did so with such love and graciousness never asking for anything in return. You were always so sweet, kind and patient and independent to the very end. We loved your mischievous sense of humor and beautiful laugh. Mom was predeceased by our Dad and husband of 65 years, Charlie, our brother Bob and two sons-in-law Gord and Larry. Mom leaves children Ray (Marg), Shirl (Don), Jack (Colleen), Joan (Andy), Ken (Mintra), Donna (Dave) and many grandchildren and great grandchildren who were blessed to know you. Mom was born and married in Saskatchewan and moved to BC in 1942. She was an excellent cook and worked hard every day of her life. She loved her family and we were first and foremost in her life. She put all of us ahead of herself and made our lives so much better and richer. She truly was Mother of the Year in our minds. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff in the Special Care Unit at Glacier View Lodge for caring so kindly for our Mom for the last two and a half year. You made her feel so special and loved and we can’t tell you how much we appreciated that. You are awesome. So long Beautiful Mom, until we meet again.

I play off a 15 handicap right now, and I don’t get out to the course nearly often enough to bring that number down anytime soon. I do, however – as an aging man who isn’t what anyone would call the epitome of physical conditioning – recognize the importance of a proper warmup before heading to the first tee. Especially for people, like me, who don’t play regularly, a proper warmup is not only a serious benefit to their scorecard, but also helps to prevent possible serious medical complications. Golf is a physically demanding sport.

People who don’t play it will likely chuckle at that concept, but those who do will understand. Golf forces you to use muscles that you (seemingly) don’t use for anything else in life, and you use them to their fullest extent for between four and five hours over a full 18 holes on a championship-length course. I warm those muscles up with a bucket on the range before I head to the first tee, but I don’t just haul my driver out of the bag and start pounding balls, because that would defeat the purpose. I start with three-quarter wedge shots at the 75-yard marker. This helps not only tell my golf muscles to get ready for the day, but also lets me practice a shot that I’m probably going to need to hit a few times later.
Then I work my way up my irons, still hitting less-than-full swings, but putting my body through the rotation and stretching that will be required of it, while focusing on making solid contact and getting the ball in the air. This is also where I watch how the wind is acting on the ball so I can adjust for that later on the course while making approach shots from the fairway – or rough, more likely. Once I’m nice and stretched out, I’ll move up to full swings, but start back at my wedges and work back up my set to the driver, and finish my range session with a few of those. Now I’m ready to play. In the event I didn’t make it to the course in time to actually warm up properly on the range before my tee time, I warm up over the first few holes to avoid injury. This means I take it easy off the first tee – maybe a smooth five-wood instead of driver – and take more club than I need and hit things at three-quarter strength for the first few holes. Sure, I need to accept that my score will likely suffer over that stretch – but if I’m smart about it, I shouldn’t be adding more than a couple of strokes over the opening three or four holes – and I’ll be saving my back, arms, legs and core from the possible issues and injuries that could occur otherwise. Good trade off. See you on the links.

Besides the main draw of the logger sports competition, last week’s 47th annual Salmon Festival at Nunns Creek Park featured food, vendor and social services booths, equipment displays and demos, and appearances by North Island-Powell River federal election candidates. But for the younger set, the Salmon Festival Kids Zone brought the biggest smiles. Clockwise from far left: Cara Yates, 7, enjoys a lift on the EuroBungy ride; Sophia Olson, left, and Kailey O’Farrell, both 3, poke their heads from the Museum at Campbell River’s puppet show booth; Joy Humphries, 5 looks down from the top of the climbing wall; Karson Marriott is transformed into a monster; and Cassidy McClung, 23 months, can’t bear to look as her mother, Melinda, takes her down the giant slide. A barge loaded with 45,000 litres of fuel that ran aground in Surge Narrows was safely in port at Campbell River. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Esquimalt was advised at 1:58 on Aug. 5 that a tug and barge had run aground in Surge Narrows, 22 kilometres northeast of Campbell River between Quadra and Maurelle islands. The barge was carrying the reported 45,000 litres of fuel in two
