Royal mail has arrived for Laurie Gourlay, president of the Vancouver Island and Coast Conservation Society, with a message from the Queen on the 150th anniversary of Vancouver Island’s flag.
TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
Queen acknowledges flag’s anniversary
I
NOT KNOWN if flown in colony’s early history.
BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
Vancouver Island’s flag has attracted royal attention. Royal mail arrived at Cedar post office in June for resident Laurie Gourlay, offering best wishes from Queen Elizabeth II for a “most successful and enjoyable year” marking the 150th milestone of Vancouver Island’s flag.
“It was like, wow,” said Gourlay, president of Vancouver Island and Coast Conservation Society, who sees the flag as a “unifying” symbol and a way to reflect on our history. The flag, a blue ensign with the Union Jack in the left corner and the Colony of Vancouver Island crest, has roots stretching back 150 years, when Vancouver Island had a government independent of B.C. The colony was authorized to make a flag in December 1865 by the British colonial secretary in London, but a year later it merged with B.C. It’s not
believed the flag was ever flown. It wasn’t until 1988 that researcher Michael Halleran found the correspondence about a flag that one was created based with the seal of the Colony Vancouver Island, according to Royal B.C. Museum’s curator of history Lorne Hammond. Historians still debate whether a blue ensign would ever have been flown. Blue is for merchantship discovered colonies, while red is for naval, and the Island already had two flags. The navy flew the Union Jack and the Hud-
son’s Bay Company had a red ensign with the letters of the company sewn into the middle. But the flag Halleran created is based on real instructions with the legal seal of the colony. It’s an imagined flag but has “real roots” and is a great story, Hammond said. While he cautions we have to be careful about reconstructing our history, he also sees the flag as a lens to explore the 1860s. “The flag is a symbol that draws people to exploring who we are and you have to respect that.” See ‘FLAG’ /4
Mayor seeks support for investment trip BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo’s mayor wants to head to China on an $11,000 trade mission to advance investment discussions, including for the proposed Hilton hotel. Mayor Bill McKay proposed a trip to Shanghai and Beijing to further investment talk for the Hilton hotel project, which is currently seeking financing. A city agenda showed the mayor had planned to ask council to authorize his trip Monday, but the request could now be postponed. The bid to go overseas comes just a year after Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation went to China to meet with investor groups for the Hilton and conference centre hotels. According to a report authored by the mayor, there has been ongoing communication between the economic development corporation and various parties from that first mission and a request has been received for a small delegation to visit Shanghai and Beijing to further current advancement discussions and establish new introductions. McKay told the News Bulletin the request came from Charles Koo, owner of Insight Holdings, the company behind the Hilton hotel project. He sees it as “very important” to go to China and called it a question of whether a community should promote itself. “I find it hard to believe that there would actually be people within the community that would be concerned that we would spend $11,000 going on a trade mission to China to promote our city,” he said. But Jordan Bateman, B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, doesn’t believe taxpayers should go to help private corporations and called the report “flimsy” on what the actual return on investment would be for taxpayers. “If you have private businesses in your community that are paying taxes there now, if you use some of that tax money to fund or benefit their competitors, that’s an unfair advantage and that’s government picking winners and losers,” he said. “That’s not right.” news@nanaimobulletin.com

Conservation service monitoring cougar sightings I officErS Watch for predatory behaviour, but say the cats aren’t as much a threat as people think. By Karl yu the News BulletiN
Despite recent reports of cougar sightings, Nanaimoarea conservation officer service says there isn’t anything to get too concerned about.
Stuart Bates, a Ministry of Environment conservation officer, confirmed reports of cougars spotted prowling at night around Diver and Green lakes last week. However, it takes more than sightings for officers
to get involved. The conservation officer service doesn’t remove cougars based on their presence alone – they are removed if exhibiting certain behaviour, he said. “A sighting of a cougar at 2 a.m.? Not a concern. It’s probably hunting deer or raccoons. If it were an elementary school and it’s there at 10 a.m., that’s dif-
ferent ... None of the sightings have had anything where the cougars show what we could call aggressive, threatening or predatory behaviour towards people,” said Bates. There also haven’t been reports of pets being taken or livestock attacked. Still, people should be vigilant, he said. Conservation officer services want residents
to call with cougar sightings, but numerous calls won’t necessarily determine response. “It’s always going to be the cougar’s behaviour that determines our response,” said Bates. “The more calls we get, it simply allows us to track the cougar’s behaviour and its travel patterns. Is its behaviour escalating? If it’s showing a
lack of fear of people, that would be a behaviour we may remove it for.” He said the general message is there isn’t anything to worry about at this time. “We get cougars in and around the outskirts of Nanaimo regularly and they get into Linley Valley and they’ll get the deer at the edges of that. They follow the Millstone River, so
occasionally we get them down in ... the Buttertubs Marsh area, where there are lots of raccoons,” Bates said. He said cougars can pose a threat to people, but aren’t as big of a threat as most people think. Please call 1-877952-7277 to report wildlife-human interactions where public safety is at risk.

Hanlon, Rinaldi traded out east The Nanaimo Clippers traded two veterans earlier this month. Jacob Hanlon and Anthony Rinaldi were dealt to Ontario’s Kingston Voyageurs in exchange for 19-year-old centre Matthew Hoover. Hanlon had 12 goals and 21 assists last year and Rinaldi had 22 goals and 16 assists. Both forwards are 20-yearolds and the Clippers are still over the maximum for 20-year-old players. Audit shows more education needed on items acceptable in green bins By Tamara CunninGham The News BulleTiN
Nanaimo residents are doing a pretty good job when it comes to chucking the right waste in green bins, a new audit shows. The City of Nanaimo has just released its green bin audit, which saw two city employees check bins to see just what was heading to the composting plant. Of 50 random bins scrutinized over three days this July, 24 per cent were contaminated with material like plastic bags, a bread clip and plastic sausage skin. That number “might make your hair curl,” said Charlotte Davis, the city’s manager of sanitation, recycling and public works administration, but contamination made up less than one per cent of the weight and volume of the green bins. “So people are doing a really, really good job,” she said. The audit shows the city could educate people around vigilance against the tossing of small foodrelated items into the bin, like
bread clips, and using compostable bags rather than biodegradable ones that break down into small pieces of plastic. “It is important that residents are mindful when using their green bin, every single item they put in there has to be compostable,” Davis said. “My job is to eliminate confusion from the situation, so I will be putting more effort into helping residents be clear on exactly what items are and aren’t compostable.” The report also showed 82 per cent of people used compostable bags in bins, while four per cent lined containers with paper and 14 per cent used nothing at all. Nanaimo rolled out a green bin program for kitchen waste in 2011, a time when the community’s recycling efforts diverted 33 per cent of waste away from the landfill. Today Nanaimo’s has improved how much is kept away from the landfill by more than 50 per cent. To see the green bin audit visit: http://goo.gl/oJuzp2.
with eligibility based on where they fall in a specific category – regular forces, RCMP, reservist, trainer, combat, admin, SarTech and technical – which needs to cease. “This is not a place that you have cuts, especially [since] they’ve expanded other departments, they’ve expanded substantially Canadian Border Services ... taking care of our veterans is not a place to cut corners and we shouldn’t be nickel and diming our veterans,” said May. Full funding must be restored in order for Vet-
erans Affairs Canada to re-open the offices, she said. The Veterans Review and Appeal Board currently rules on both new cases and appeals and the Greens said there needs to be two separate bodies made up of certified experts. A d d i t i o n a l l y, t h e Greens also promised to pay for service dog training, as it said the dogs are found to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. May said the Greens are committed to providing a service dog to any
veteran who wants one. She estimated it would cost at least $1 million annually. “Ser vice dogs have been shown to be remarkably effective in helping veterans and helping them avoid pharmaceutical drugs. They work better than pharmaceutical drugs, but the wait time for a veteran to get a PTSD service dog is years,” said May. May said the Green’s full platform and budget will be announced just after Labour Day. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

While Dennison is in her first year with the foundation, she is well aware of the plight of child poverty in Nanaimo, having served in the same position with the Nanaimo Foodshare Society previously. But her new position has allowed her better perspective. She is hearing from teachers, counsellors and principals how deep poverty runs across the district. “It’s not just focused on any one particular school,” said Dennison. “Of course we have pockets where there’s definitely more need, but what we’re seeing is requests from

Inbrief Protected bike lane meant to improve safety city scene
Bins encourage recycling If you’re looking for pocket change, empty a new blue bin in downtown Nanaimo. Thanks to Encorp Pacific, the company behind the Return-it Campaign, and the City of Nanaimo, 50 beverage container blue bins will be installed this month in downtown Nanaimo, the Old City Quarter and parks for the first time. The new bins are “selfserviced,” meaning while the city will maintain them, it’s counting on the public to collect. Recycling containers will never be locked and anyone will be able to open the side door, clear out what’s inside and return it for deposit. Charlotte Davis, the city’s manager of sanitation, recycling and public works administration, said litter is checked once or twice a day by bottle collectors but some cans can’t be accessed and it’s not safe. Encorp Pacific provided the bins for free. Fifteen have already been placed downtown and in the Old City Quarter and another 35 will be installed in parks later this month. DESIGN PUTS buffer between moving vehicles and cyclists on Boundary Avenue. BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
Cyclists can steer clear of traffic in Nanaimo’s hospital district with the firstever protected bike lane. The City of Nanaimo has opened a pilot cycle track northbound on Boundary Avenue. With a push in the new Transportation Master Plan to encourage more alternative transportation, city crews have been expanding the local network of bike lanes. But this new cycle track is different than the typical lane. While painted lines are typically all that separate bikes and moving traffic, this track
is wedged between the sidewalk curb and parallel-parking stalls. There’s also a painted buffer to prevent doors from swinging into the path of bikes. It’s an extra level of separation, according to Gordon Foy, the city’s transportation manager, who says it’s a facility that cities across the province have been creating over the past five years, including Vancouver, and meant to encourage people to use bikes. He has heard concerns from people who wanted to ride, but didn’t feel comfortable travelling with traffic and

wanted more separation. There have been complaints about the new road scape
on Boundary Avenue, including from letterto-the-editor writer John Pike, who called the new parking and
bike lane a “design fiasco” and a safety hazard to cyclists and vehicle operators, pointing out that vehicles parked a lane width from the curb place cyclists at risk from passenger doors opening. Drivers are at risk of having to cross the bike lane to get to the sidewalk. But Leo Boon, chairman of the Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition, sees the track as a great thing. There are “thousands of people” interested in cycling and living a healthy lifestyle but they’re also looking for areas to use that are safe and comfortable and one of their main concerns is that motorists won’t give cyclists the amount of space required, nor the right of way. They want protection, he said.
“In most cities in the world they have protected bike lines. In fact, Montreal and Vancouver are dotted with them all over,” Boon said. “It’s something that’s coming down the pipeline and you will be seeing much more of.” The new cycle track is a test for the city and will help give it a better sense of when to apply them. It was paid for with $120,000 from BikeB.C., a provincial cost-sharing program, and done this summer in conjunction with other road works, including crosswalk improvement at Boundary Avenue and Nightingale Crescent. Start debate on our climate
Kim Campbell was infamously quoted (or misquoted) as saying that a 47-day election was no time to discuss serious issues. Fortunately, we are in the early days of an election campaign that is almost twice that long, and will stretch on into late October. It’s also unusual to have an election campaign during the height of summer, when the weather is often top of mind. So let’s have a debate about global warming. Not whether it exists, which has been thoroughly established. There is a worldwide scientific consensus, and every major political party accepts that it is happening, whether grudgingly or not. There is also ample anecdotal evidence in the form of temperature records that have fallen by the score across B.C. We also have the raging wildfires and water restrictions to show us what global warming will mean for us on a local level. We need to determine what the best course of action is toward change. There are dozens of options, including changing the way we generate power, increasing energy efficiency, tax incentives, more spending on public transit, and changes in urban planning. Depending on how we choose to proceed, we could find ourselves in a future with electric cars springing up everywhere, as in Norway, and with solar farms popping up across the Prairies, or we could pioneer a new generation of safe, efficient nuclear power projects, or we could simply hunker down and concentrate on using less energy and using what we do create more efficiently. Any of those options are better than our current course, which is barely better than nothing. Our major opposition parties may be willing to attack the government on the environment, but they are still following rather than leading the debates on energy and climate change. As usual, it’s up to Canadians to push for the changes we need in Ottawa. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith,V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

Juggling skills and technologies is part of tapping into user/viewer/reader demographics dispersed among multiple formats, but targeting specific demographics now requires specialists. In 2013 the Chicago Sun-Times fired its entire staff of 28 photographers – some of the best photojournalists in the world. The reasoning, in part, was writers could produce adequate images with their smartphones. But good writers aren’t always good photographers and vice versa. A year later the paper rehired four of its former photographers as ‘multimedia journalists.’ Yahoo News, CNN, National Geographic and other major news agencies are now hiring specialists to produce content for Snapchat’s Discover section introduced in January. Snapchat isn’t just for teenagers anymore. Discover delivers content from different channels with equal weight, allowing users to choose content rather than relying on algorithms to promote trending content and, as with Facebook, tell users what to read. An exciting development, for sure. But by the time you read this I’ll be camped out next to my bicycle, near a beach with a book in my hand. I figure I’ll pack along my old copy of E.M. Forster’s A Passage to India that I put down and never finished back in the early ’90s, right about when all this Internet stuff got going.

To the Editor,
Despite Conservative hopes for success, latest negotiations for the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal failed. On the day the election was called, ignoring ‘conventions of restraint’ on making country-changing decisions during an election campaign, an order in council was passed by the federal government to proceed with negotiations. The TPP is the mother of all omnibus bills, negotiated under guidance from multinational corporations in secret despite a plea from negotiators from seven participating countries. Leaked chapters cover far more than traditional trade. Its 29 chapters of opaque jargon appear to privatize Crown corporations, converting them to profit-making entities (goodbye CBC), forbid preferential local or national procurement, and deregulate financial trading. Our reward for approving this Trojan Horse into our democracy is a forecasted burst of trade-induced prosperity and jobs. However, this is based on economic models criticized by many. Despite the mess of multilateral and bilateral trade agreements previously signed, trade has grown by a mere 0.3 per cent annually, the worst in postwar history and trade deficits continue to grow. Why bother with an election, what difference will any party make if we are really being governed by Pepsi, GM or Monsanto?

Maffeo Sutton Park could benefit from some improvements, but it shouldn’t be overwhelmed with features, says letter writer.
Park could do with a refresh To the Editor,
Re: Park improvement options explored, Aug. 11. It would be nice to have a pier at the park for sure. I definitely do not want to see the park overwhelmed with extra things. Some of the art is really unsightly and should be
removed; it’s useless and in the way. Fishing pier needs renovations too. I enjoy concerts and music very much there.

To the Editor,
It is great that we are maintaining and caring so much about Maf-
feo Sutton Park, but as a longtime resident of Departure Bay, I am very disappointed that the beach and seawall are grossly neglected. Nothing has been done in over 40 years. The seawall will finally (I will believe it when it happens) get work done this fall. But the
level is so bad that one’s hips object to difference in level and if you are in wheelchair I am sure you would tip over. Lighting is outdated. At one time it was the spot on the waterfront – until it got abandoned.

Sidewalks belong to taxpayers, not businesses To the Editor,
Why are taxpayers footing the bill for business? The Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association has spent $12,000 to build a seating area for a downtown restaurant and taken away premium public park-
ing spaces. I wonder if the restaurant is paying money for a lease on this public property and if it is paying taxes on it like I do on my property I use. Looking up and down the street I also wonder if other restaurants using the taxpayerpaid-for-and-maintained sidewalks are paying a
fee. or is it the rest of us paying taxes so they can enhance their bottom line? If the BIA wants to make Shangri-La areas downtown, it should start with that vacant concrete slab called Diana Krall Plaza.

To the Editor,
In his election speech, PM Stephen Harper urged Canadians to “let us stay the course.” To let Harper and his Conservatives stay on course would mean that the country would soon have no scientists, no safety or health
inspectors, no freedom, no middle class, no unspoiled environment, no living in peace. To let them stay on course would get us all totally suffocated with pollution, drink contaminated fracking water, eat modified garbage while waiting to be jailed for even think-
ing that something is not right with this picture. To let them stay on course would make the rich richer and provide the rest of us with nothing except greater probability of catastrophes, disasters and arrests.

And for Nanaimo’s David Gogo, things have changed since he released his last album, Come on Down, in 2013. “Since the last album, [I have lost] a lot of people in the music business, whether they are famous or not,” Gogo said. Among those who have departed are blues legends Johnny Winter and B.B. King, both of whom Gogo has played with. “It happens at a certain point in your life where people start cashing in the chips,” Gogo said. Next month the 46-year-old will release his 14th record, Vicksburg Call. The 10-track album contains songs mostly written by Gogo and was recorded in Nanaimo. “I am really pleased,” Gogo said. “I think I am more excited about this record coming out than any of them.” According to Gogo, the album, which will be released to Cordova Bay Records, touches on a number of themes including the different types of relationships that he’s had in his life. “There is a lot of relationship stuff but from all sorts of different perspectives,” Gogo said. “We all have our ups and downs, and so this album talks

subjects, it still has some “silly” songs. “The blues is the blues,” Gogo said. “You can sing about happy things, you can sing about sad things, but it’s all the blues.” The Nanaimoite says the writing on the record is some of his best. “I am much more confident in my songwriting ability and I think these songs are some of the best songs I’ve written in my entire career,” Gogo
said. “I don’t write as many songs as some people, but they tend to be keepers, which is good.” David Gogo performs at the Moose Hall,1356 Cranberry Ave., on Friday (Aug. 21) at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15-$20. Gogo will also be performing at Fascinating Rhythm on Sept. 5. For more information, please visit www.davidgogo. com. arts@nanaimobulletin.com
Residents of the Harbour City will have a unique opportunity to see one of the world’s top-ranking choirs in their own backyard. On Friday (Aug. 21) the GuangDong Experimental Middle School Choir will be in performing at the Port Theatre as part of their Angel Ambassador B.C. Tour. Angela Fang, president of the Nanaimo Chinese Culture Society, one of the sponsors behind the event, says the GuangDong Experimental Middle School Choir is an extremely talented group. “[They are] very impressive and very attractive,” she said. Formed in 1952, the choir is based out of the Chinese province of Guangdong. Its members are students in grades 8 to 10, who often perform in a number of languages including English, Russian, Latin, Swedish and multiple Chinese dialects such as Mandarin and Cantonese. Fang says the choir sings a good variety of songs. “The singing is a mix of culture. The music is from different countries so it is very multicultural based,” Fang said. “They have different
types of costumes to show the culture and theme. It is a lot of storytelling.” In 2014, the choir took home first place in the Children and Youth Choir and Folklore categories at the 2014 World Choir Games. As of April it was the third-ranked choir in the world by the Interkultur Rankings. British Columbia and the Chinese province of Guangdong are currently celebrating 20 years of sister province relations, which officially began in 1995. According to Fang, the choir’s performance in Nanaimo is part of the two provinces’ celebrations. “The reason they came here is because of the celebration of the sister province and Guangzhou city,” Fang said. “It is a cultural exchange.” The GuangDong Experimental Middle School Choir perform at the Port Theatre on Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $24 for adults and $12 for students. Groups of 10 or more can take $4 off per adult ticket. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www. porttheatre.com. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

BLUE SKY MINERS perform at the Queen’s on wednesday night with John Gogo. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
One day Jena Gogo was performing out front of the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria when she met vocalist and guitarist Jay Mitchell. “He [Mitchell] was all dressed up in a three-piece suit and a top hat giving tours as Amor De Cosmos, Gogo said. “He heard me signing and actually came over and said hello and we started jamming.” The two played together and eventually went their separate ways, occasionally running into each other. Then one night Gogo, who was living in Toronto, was hosting her first live music night event at a bar in the city when Mitchell showed up. “He was the first person who walked
through the door,” Gogo said. From then on the two began performing regularly and in 2013 they formed Blue Sky Miners, a Toronto-based folkrock band. “It was crazy,” Gogo said. “It was electric when we started writing together. He had been writing for a long time with a female voice in mind ... and I had really been looking for someone to write with it.” Today the Blue Sky Miners consists of Gogo and Mitchell along with Eric Duquette, Mark Lavoie and Stefan Hegerat. On Wednesday (Aug. 19), Blue Sky Miners will perform at the Queen’s. Their show in the Harbour City is one of the last
stops on a Western Canadian tour that has mostly consisted of performances across Vancouver Island. “It is super exciting because three of us grew up on the Island,” Gogo said. For the band’s Island performances they have been joined by Gogo’s father, John, who is a cousin of David Gogo. The band is gearing up for its debut EP titled Blue Sky Miners, which will be released in October. “It is a collection of stories that are very much inspired by the West Coast,” Gogo said. The band takes its name from the Midnight Oil song Blue Sky Mine, a tune that Gogo heard frequently as a child. “Wherever I was in the house I would stop whatever I was doing and dance like a crazy person,” Gogo said. “I really like that idea of not being able to help yourself and just

Bursitis is commonly seen in the shoulder DR. KAREN MATTERN or the hip. Those joints and others contain pockets of fluid, called bursae, which distribute the pressure of muscles, ligaments and tendons as they move over one another in the joint. If there is abnormal movement of the joint or it is out of balance, a bursa can become inflamed and tender and movement can become painful. Also, there is often pain at rest. Bursitis is best treated with ice to decrease the inflammation, and chiropractic treatment to restore proper movement to surrounding joints. Such adjustments can significantly increase the speed of healing. If you have bursitis, consult your chiropractor, who can balance the spine and joints, and teach you the best exercises to get back to normal movement.

Nerve damage can happen in your feet LANGTON (Peripheral neuropathy); most commonly from Diabetes, aging, alcoholism, and metabolic disorders. It causes numbing and tingling in the feet, sharp shooting pains down the legs and it is worse at night and worse at rest. This starts at the toes and moves upwards. Often this is confused with degeneration in the low back, Neurogenic Intermittent Claudication (stenosis). The degenerated areas in the low back can cause leg and foot problems as it compresses the part of the spinal cord that branches to the legs and feet. The symptoms are leg pain, leg weakness with walking, numbing in the feet and occasional bowel and bladder problems. Relief with sitting and bending forward – this will affect your lifestyle as it limits you from golfing, walking the dog, shopping and walking activities. For further information on properly differentiating these two and properly treating them in order to keep you on your feet and moving; please call 250 758 1716. It’s Your Future, Be There Healthy…

The most common form of eczema is called Atopic Dermatitis. It often occurs in young children and commonly affects the flexor surfaces of the elbows and knees (front of elbows, back of knees). A naturopathic approach first involves addressing any underlying food allergies or intolerances. See a naturopathic physician to discuss the different diagnostic tests available to diagnose your child’s food intolerances. In addition to removing the offending foods from the diet, a good quality probiotic supplement is very important to ensure optimal digestion. Anti-inflammatory agents, such as a good quality Omega 3 fish oil high in EPA can be taken orally to quickly decrease inflammation. Lastly, it is important to soothe the skin topically and decrease scratching to prevent secondary infections and allow healing. Herbs that are beneficial for soothing skin in eczema include chamomile and calendula. Most naturopathic consultations and treatments are covered by extended health plans.

Hi Amber. I have an anxious child and am worried about the back to school transition, please help! AMBER SCOTCHBURN Thanks for sharing and we can certainly help BSW, B.Ed you and your child! 1. Start going to bed a little bit earlier each night to get everybody back to their school bedtime. This also means you should start waking up earlier too! Start waking up before your kids as that will give you some time to mentally prepare for the busy morning ahead! 2. Have your kids and yourself prepare the night before: lunches made, bags packed, breakfast options accessible, bathroom time scheduled, and even clothes laid out! 3. Plan to leave the house 10 minutes before you actually have to, sometimes that might mean even having your clocks set 10 minutes fast. 4. Prepare a back-to-school journal with your child about their summer and ask them who at school they can share it with. 5. Go in the week before school officially starts, meet the teacher and see the classroom!

ARE YOU TIRED OF EATING ONLY THE FOODS YOU CAN, NOT THE FOODS YOU WANT?
Is your Health at Risk?
■ Denturists
Denturist Too often this question is answered with a resounding MICHELLE ALLAN “Yes”, both by denture wearers and those with missing NELSON BOOS DD RD natural teeth. In addition, there is frequently a lack of confidence and a great deal of embarrassment due to missing natural teeth, broken and ill-fitting dentures and the inability to eat certain foods. The limited food choices available for those unable to chew properly includes overly processed foods with inadequate nutritional value and very few manageable options for fruits, vegetables and proteins - like meat or nuts. A restrictive diet results in poor nutrition which can lead to a multitude of health issues – including heartburn/acid reflux, obesity, gastrointestinal issues and more – which can significantly affect the quality of your life. By visiting a denturist, the solution to your chewing dilemma is easier to solve than you might think. A denturist uses a team approach to find the right solutions for you. Our goal is to meet your Personal and unique needs, and as such, will work in collaboration with other important members of the dental communitylike your dentist, oral surgeon and other specialists. At Pacific Denture Centre laboratory work is performed on the premises by the denturist who sees you and other members of our team, thus, ensuring the quality of care is customized and personal. Customized denture treatments leading to properly fitting and functioning dentures can improve your oral health, which impacts your overall health, and of course your smile!

Bankruptcy
I am a single mother with a home in foreclosure and an ex-husband who pays no child support. I have credit card debt and my GARETH SLOCOMBE, CA, CIRP hydro was recently cut off. Is bankruptcy my only option? I have a good job.
If you have sufficient income, a proposal to creditors under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act may be an option. Under this kind of arrangement, you may pay your debts through a single regular monthly payment over a period of usually between three to five years. Depending on what assets you have and your ability to pay, your may either end up paying your debts in full or making a compromise by paying as little as 10% to 20% of your debts in some cases. All interest is stopped and creditors may not take any further action against you such as garnishments etc. Depending on the amount of your debts, you may only need 51% of the creditors (by dollar value) to vote in favour of the proposal in order to bind all other creditors in the compromise. Arrears on your hydro bill can also be included in the proposal and you will be able to have your service reconnected once the proposal is filed. If you are counting a shortfall to the mortgage holder as part of your total debt, you may first wish to ensure that it is not going to be paid out by your ex-husband if he had originally cosigned for it. What is the difference between a Mobile home and a Modular Home?
The main differences between Modular and Manufactured (aka mobile homes) are construction standards, materials and foundations. Manufactured / Mobile homes are built on a steel frame and are normally placed on wood blocking, concrete pil- TIM WAIT P.R.E.C. lars and sometimes on metal posts. Modular homes are built with a wood floor system and are designed to go on a either a crawlspace or a basement. Modular homes are built to Canadian Standards Association CSA-A277 (Canadian National Building Code) and are built to meet BC Building Code. These Standard Specifications can include engineered floor trusses, 2 x 6 exterior walls, 8’ & 9’ ceilings and primed and painted drywall. Building structural module homes indoors, in a controlled environment, resolves many problems typical of conventional on-site building. Both materials and schedules are less vulnerable to weather conditions. Tolerances are more exact and quality more consistent. Costs are lower and prices and completion dates more reliable, as the work of specialized trades workers is more easily scheduled and coordinated. Full testing of plumbing, wiring, heating and other systems before Modules leave the factory ensures every completed structure still meets the manufacturer’s exacting CSA approved standards. Deerwood Estates is a gated community and the Modular homes were built by Retire West, a family owned company with a solid reputation earned through 25 years of planning, development and management of Modular home communities in BC. Deerwood Estates is distinguished by quality in design and construction and is a Hallmark in tasteful landscaping and attention to detail in the development of streetscapes and generous green space. Call Tim Wait, known by many as Mr. Deerwood to view his many listings in this friendly village that offers a relaxed lifestyle.

hypnotherapy Can Hypnotherapy help with Test Anxiety?
Does this sound familiar? From the moment that the instructor says begin, I look at the exam RON E. THOMPSON sheet in front of me my whole mind goes blank, my hands become cold and clammy and I sit there frozen unable to recall anything from all the hours of studying I’ve previously done! Excessive stress and extreme pressure on you to succeed can interfere with focus, memory and concentration. Often times it has been found that the reasons for poor test scores and failed exams are really because of negative thinking, fears, and self-limiting beliefs. By using hypnosis however, it teaches you how to relax while taking an exam and studying and when you relax, your mind becomes more absorbent and able to learn. Hypnosis can also help you to concentrate and focus more, improve your memory, and build up your confidence while taking exams. You will find that by using hypnosis it will help you to tune out all distractions so that you can zone in and really concentrate on your studies easily and effortlessly. SHARON FAUCHON,
You’re right, there are several different options KRISTA VERHIEL for those who are looking for a mortgage. Some of which are traditional banks, local credit unions, online companies and mortgage brokers. Some basic information about each is as follows…. Banks are well known, trustworthy, but many different people will work with you and they only have their limited set of products available to you and only offer their best rates to high net worth clients. Credit Unions are much the same as Banks. Online companies have high instances of fraud, they are usually full of fine print and false rate promises plus you never meet a person it’s all by phone or email especially not ideal for first-time homebuyers or anyone with questions. Mortgage brokers are local people who you can go to an office and meet and have a lasting business relationship with one person, we have access to 75+ different banks, credit unions & lenders to get you the best product for your needs and always the lowest rate for everyone. A mortgage broker is more personal than a large company and we work for you not the company who is lending you the money meaning we always have your best interest at heart and best of all our services are FREE to you, we are paid by the lenders!

I’m going to tread softly here (law suits suck) here’s my thoughts. I’ve seen many different approaches to cool over the years most of them involve memory foam and basically exploding the cell so that air flows through it, or adding gel to promote air flow. For demonstration purposes this works well you can show how air flows through the uncompressed cell. However once you compress it IE: lay down, any channels that were opened up are now closed. Heat has to go somewhere so these products will feel cool for a while but not long. The best approach is a good cotton mattress pad (not waterproof), wool pad and/or latex topper. Check us out at www.johnsbedrooms.com
We use decibels (dB) when we describe JEFF CAMPBELL, RHIP sound levels. Noise is considered too loud and potentially damaging when it exceeds 85 dB. Normal speech is 55 dB, a chainsaw is 95 dB, and a handgun blast can be as much as 160 dB. As a general rule, if you have to raise your voice over the noise, you should be wearing hearing protection. No one should be exposed to sound over 120 dB for even short periods without protection. Levels over 120 dB can cause permanent damage even after one brief exposure. You should avoid loud noise when possible. Ask us about custom ear protection that covers a wide variety of activities. If you suspect hearing loss, consult a qualified Hearing Care Professional at Connect Hearing and book a complimentary hearing evaluation.

Yvonne Theresa Hammond Yvonne was born on the 4th of September 1933 in Faversham, Kent, England to parents Edward and Elsie Jones. She spent her school years in Faversham and upon graduation went to work as a laboratory technician at a local food factory and then as a receptionist at two doctor’s surgeries. This was followed by her lifetime ambition to be a nurse and she began as a student nurse in 1955 at the mental hospital at Chartham near Canterbury. It was also at this time she entered the local beauty contest and was crowned Miss Faversham. She was also a qualified midwife. It was while she was at Chartham she met her future husband George who was serving in the army and they were married on the 4th of June 1960 at the Faversham Parish Church. Upon George’s leaving the army he was to get work in Peterborough which led Yvonne to continue her nursing career at Peterborough General Hospital where she was promoted to Nursing Sister. They immigrated to Canada in 1970, settling in Nanaimo, British Columbia as she had a cousin nearby. Once settled in, she was to start back to her nursing career at Nanaimo General Hospital. After a short time she was again to achieve promotion to Senior Sister. Yvonne’s life would take a turn in 1990 when her husband George died at the age of 55. Yvonne never remarried. Feeling a need for change she retired from nursing but this didn’t stop her need to help people as she joined Altrusa in April 1991 and served as president from June 1, 1994 to May 31, 1996. She would do whatever it took to help including presiding over a conference held at the Coast Bastion Hotel with over 250 members from across British Columbia and the U.S. Pacific Northwest to working on many projects from presenting bursaries to high school recipients, acting as the resident tea leaf reader at a tea party and raising funds with gift wrapping at Christmas time. She was involved in many projects over the years to better her community including the children’s water park on Howard Avenue. Always ready to volunteer when needed, she will be missed by all who knew her there. She loved to travel and did so with her husband around Europe but Italy was her favourite. She made a trip to Japan to attend an international nurse’s conference and took her mother, talking many times of the fun they shared. She drove often to Calgary to visit friends and to the United States to attend Mary Kay and Altrusa conferences. As well as selling cosmetics she also worked in women’s fashion stores and for those of you who knew her this was reflected in her flawless make up, complexion, hair, and fashion sense. Yvonne was a passionate lover of cats and they were her constant companions. Over the years she owned many and when sending letters or cards they always came from Yvonne and her cats, they were never left out! In 2013, Yvonne moved to Kiwanis Lodge as an injury had her requiring some assistance. She was treated wonderfully by the staff. She had further complications in 2015 which led to her peaceful death on the 29th of July 2015. Yvonne is survived by her sister Sheila, brother Trevor, brotherin-law Bryan and nephews Martin and Richard and niece Katherine. In lieu of flowers as she loved cats and all animals so much, a donation in her name to an animal charity of your choice would have pleased her. We want to thank the wonderful people of Kiwanis Lodge who over her two years there and in her final days treated her with care, kindness and compassion. Yvonne will return to England where her family will hold a memorial service and spread her ashes at the Charing Memorial Gardens at Ashford, Kent to be with her parents Edward and Elsie Jones.

Big plays spark Raiders to win I COLE VIRTANEN leads defence with two interceptions. BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
The V.I. Raiders made big plays and came back to beat the Kamloops Broncos. Nanaimo’s B.C. Football Conference team was a 35-26 winner on Saturday at Caledonia Park. The home team gained huge chunks of yardage on offence, defence and special teams in the second half to recover from a first half in which it was outplayed and outscored 20-7. “To come back from something like that really showed our intestinal fortitude. We believe in each other…” said Jerome Erdman, Raiders coach. “Every facet of the game stepped it up in the second half.” The play that turned the tide was a 95-yard interception return touchdown from Raiders safety Cole Virtanen. “I was eyeing it down, I could see where the quarterback was looking from the start, so I was just able to make a good jump on the ball and then it was just instincts,” said the rookie from Nanaimo.
The major tied the score, and the convert gave the team the lead. There was endgame drama with a minute and a half left as the Broncos missed a potential game-tying twopoint convert and then were also unsuccessful on the ensuing onside kick. “We’ve already been in tough games throughout the season, so it’s easy to keep our head,” Virtanen said. “We knew that we had the fight and the conditioning … and once we got into the second half, we really came into our own.” Erdman said his coaching staff made adjustments that worked, but said the players also brought the right attitude into the second half. “It almost seemed we were tentative there in the first half; we weren’t playing Raider football,” the coach said. “And I challenged them, and I’ll tell you what, they accepted the challenge and they came through.” The Raiders didn’t get on the scoreboard until two minutes left before halftime, when Nigel Henry’s punt block set up a four-yard touchdown run by Nathan Berg. V.I. returned the opening kickoff of the second half to midfield, and the offence took advantage with a drive that finished

with a two-yard TD catch by Arthur Fabbro. In the fourth quarter, Raiders QB Liam O’Brien connected on two longbomb touchdowns over the middle, a 76-yard TD strike to Dustin Rodriguez and then a 65-yard TD throw to Fabbro.
O’Brien finished 9-for-17 for 217 yards. Rodriguez had 131 yards on four catches and Berg rushed for 89 yards. Defensively for the Raiders, Virtanen led the way with two interceptions and five tackles, Quinton Bowles had two sacks and
five tackles and Kaelan Botel, Parker Smith and Tyler Harvey had a sack each. Dexter Shea made seven tackles. GAME ON … The Raiders and Broncos play a rematch next Saturday (Aug. 22) in Kamloops. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
New Buccaneers coach happy with hockey team’s training camp BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
The Nanaimo Buccaneers started figuring out their crew as they prepare to set sail on the 2015-16 season. The Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League club held its training camp this past weekend at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. More than 50 players participated in the camp, led by an all-new coaching staff. “It was a hard camp, guys were tired by the end of it, but I got to see a lot of kids in a lot of different
situations, which is what I wanted to set out to do,” said Dan Lemmon, Buccaneers coach and general manager. He said the returning players all reported in top shape. “Obviously the commitment level has been there this summer,” Lemmon said. The coach mostly wanted to use the weekend to get his guys on the ice and in game situations, such as the black-versusyellow intrasquad game at the end, won 6-2 by Team Black.
Immediately afterward, the Bucs coaching staff set about making “tough decisions,” Lemmon said. “We kind of got a good look at our depth chart to see where the guys are going to start stacking up,” he said. “So this is one step along the way from a championship season.” GAME ON … The Buccaneers play their first preseason game this Friday (Aug. 21) as the Oceanside Generals visit the NIC for a 7 p.m. faceoff. The VIJHL regular season starts Sept. 4 at Campbell River. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

A lawn bowls player from Nanaimo has scored a rare double, and now he’s trying for another. Hirendra Bhartu is a Bowls B.C. champ in both men’s pairs and mixed pairs, and will try to replicate the feat on a national scale. Bhartu and his partner Gordon Fall of Cowichan are in North York, Ont. this week (Aug. 16-22) at the Bowls Canada championships, and Bhartu and Josephine Lee will compete at the Canadian mixed pairs championships Sept. 14-19 in Fredericton, N.B. Bhartu and Fall won provincials at the end of July in Victoria, and then, the very next weekend, Bhartu and Lee won provincials in West Vancouver. The Nanaimo lawn bowler said h e ’s e x p e c t i n g fierce competition this week in the men’s pairs. Bhartu said he likes to try to stay in the game for 10 or 12 ends, and then build a strategy depending on the score. He’s willing to be aggressive with his shots. “If the opposition’s going to leave one bowl or two bowls in the head that can be taken out of the head for a multiple big count, I go for those shots,” he said. “It’s risk and reward.” Bhartu is a former Commonwealth Games competitor and a multi-time national champion. He has teamed with Lee four times at provincials and four times at nationals and the duo has never failed to win gold. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
