information about the shooting, but the incident is believed to be part of the ongoing “Townline Hill” conflict. A prior drive-by shooting, also believed to be part of the dispute, took place in the 30500 block of Sandpiper Drive on Aug. 6. In that incident, a 2013 Volkswagen in the driveway of a residence had been struck with several bullets, but no one was injured. At the time, police said there were people in the home who were well-known to police, but none of them were

co-operating with authorities. The Townline Hill conflict – in reference to the general area of west Abbotsford where most of the disputes are taking place – began more than a year ago. The conflict involves two groups of young South Asian men and has involved incidents of mischief, assault, vandalism and arson. In recent months, the dispute has escalated to include several shootings. Last October, 18-yearold Harwin Baringh was fatally shot while in his vehicle on Sparrow Drive – lo-

cated in the vicinity of the last two shootings – but police have not confirmed whether his murder is related to the conflict. However, court documents filed in December to seize two vehicles alleged to have ties to Baringh’s murder indicated that his death was linked to an ongoing conflict between members of the Chahil and Dhaliwal crime groups. MacDonald said the Townline Hill conflict initially began between the two groups “over next to nothing,” but these men became easy targets for gang recruitment.

He said the recent shootings represent a “hodgepodge of different reasons for men to be in conflict with one another, starting with the petty and going up to gangs and drugs.” The conflict was the subject of a crime forum for the South Asian community in April at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium that attracted more than 500 people. The Abbotsford Police Department is asking anyone with information about Monday night’s shooting to call them at 604-859-5225, text abbypd (222973) or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

OTHER SHOOTINGS: ■ Feb. 22 : One man is shot and another stabbed during an altercation on Holly Street. ■ March 2: Shots fired at a home, associated to a known gang member, in the 31400 block of Southern Drive. No injuries. ■ April 16: Shots fired from one car at another in the area of Clearbrook and Downes roads near MEI school. No injuries. ■ July 18: Five shots fired at a home in the 31400 block of Blueridge Drive. No injuries. –-

Police nab driver of stolen car Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A Vancouver man who dumped the stolen vehicle he was driving was arrested on Monday night in Abbotsford after a three-hour search by police. The incident began at about 5 p.m., when Abbotsford Police received reports about an erratic driver in the area of Whatcom and South Parallel roads. Const. Ian MacDonald said witnesses reported that the man, driving a black Mercedes, was passing people on the right and, at one point, appeared to drive

toward a pedestrian. One witness said he thought the driver had possibly pointed a gun at him. The suspect eventually made his way onto Highway 1 and headed east toward Chilliwack before driving through the grassy median and travelling west, returning to the vicinity of Whatcom Road. Patrol officers saw the vehicle in the area and eventually located it abandoned in the 36100 block of Waterleaf Place. Police blocked off roads in the area and

began searching for the suspect, including the use of a police dog. The 34-year-old man was located at about 8 p.m. in the washroom of a restaurant on Whatcom Road and was arrested without further incident. Police confirmed that the Mercedes had been stolen from Surrey earlier in the day, and they did not find a gun on the man or in the vehicle. MacDonald said the man has an “extensive criminal history.” The investigation is continuing, and numerous charges are expected.

Developer of property should do more, neighbours say An Allwood Street business owner says a mace-like weapon he discovered last week shows that the demolition of trailers at the former Allwood Estates Mobile Home Park hasn’t alleviated concerns surrounding the property. Last week, Seung Yong Lee, who runs Master Lee’s Tae Kwon Do School on Allwood Street, found the bladed weapon in the parking lot behind his small building. He has also seen paint splashed on the back of his building, graffiti stenciled on the wall, and a water tap vandalized. A tent surrounded by mounds of garbage sits just metres from the fence separating his parking lot from the former trailer park. Barely visible, abutting his building, is another tent under a large tree. Other camps, along with several shopping carts, are visible in other portions of the property. There are several places where a single person could squeeze through fencing into the lot, but on Monday morning, Lee arrived to find that a gate, adorned with a No Trespassing sign, had been broken down. The property is owned by Onni Group and slated for development. Earlier this year, the final trailers at the

Lee is worried about property crime – a nearby business had its fence scaled last weekend, although nothing was taken. He’s also concerned about the possibility of a fire, especially once winter arrives and homeless residents begin using heating devices. In June, a trailer went up in flames. Lee is particularly worried about a fire starting at the bottom of a tree that shelters a homeless camper and hangs over his business. “If a fire happens again, it could get to our building,” he said. Abbotsford Police spokesperson Const. Ian MacDonald said police have received fewer complaints about the property since the trailers came down. He said the main concern is the possibility of a fire, but said the area

is patrolled and the owners of the property have been “extremely co-operative.” The main problem has been the site’s fence, which is repeatedly cut open to gain access. But Lee said more should be done, particularly by the property owners. The campers currently living on the property next to his building have been there for several months, he said, although his attempts to contact Onni representatives have been unsuccessful. The city says building permits for the first several buildings on the property are currently under review, but Lee said that until construction begins on the site, security needs to be stepped up. “The owners have to wake up and see what’s going on,” he said. Onni Group did not respond to requests for comment.

installation of air-monitoring stations, along with descriptions of the complaints process and consultations with landowners or First Nations who may be affected. The draft conditions would also require the company to include “conclusions” about possible seismic activity during the last 11,000 years for several known faults, including the Sumas fault and Vedder mountain fault, which run parallel on either side of the Sumas Prairie. Kinder Morgan Canada president Ian Anderson said last week the company will be seeking clarification on the timing of some of the conditions, and will file its comments to the NEB review panel Aug. 20. Most major conditions, including plans for watercourse crossings

along the route, are to be filed at least 90 days before construction begins. Conditions also include submitting records of landowner consultation on the route, and a plan for aboriginal participation in monitoring construction. “Our initial review of the draft conditions is that they are rigorous but achievable,” Anderson said. NEB hearings are to resume Aug. 24, where the B.C. government is expected to formalize its position, based on Premier Christy Clark’s five conditions for new heavy oil pipelines. They include a “worldclass” spill response capability on land and sea, approval and benefit sharing by affected First Nations, and a still-undefined “fair share” of benefits for the province.

A detailed response plan in case of a major disaster at Kinder Morgan Canada’s Sumas Mountain Pump Station and Terminal in Abbotsford is among 145 conditions for the approval of the company’s proposed pipeline expansion project. Last week, the National Energy Board (NEB) released a draft list of conditions for approval of Kinder Morgan Canada’s Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion project, including environmental protection plans for land and marine operations. Kinder Morgan is proposing to twin the line to ramp up shipments of diluted bitumen from northern Alberta that began intermittently in the late 1980s. The $5.4 billion expansion project would nearly triple the line’s capacity to 890,000 barrels per day. That would result in a seven-fold increase in oil tankers entering and leaving Vancouver harbour. The proposal would also see the construction of an additional tank to the Sumas Pump Station and Terminal, bringing the total there to seven. Capacity at the terminal would increase from 715,000 to 890,000 barrels. Among the NEB’s draft conditions is a requirement for the company to complete updated risk assessment for the three terminals, including details on the potential consequences of a “boil-over,” “flash fires and vapour cloud explosions,” or a domino effect that would result from the release of the contents of one tank. The company must

also develop a “secondary containment system” and demonstrate its ability to contain multiple ruptured tanks during a once-in-100years, 24-hour storm event. The company must also file an independent report on proposed fire protection and firefighting systems at its Sumas Mountain, Burnaby and Edmonton terminals, along with information on emergency preparedness and training programs at its terminals. It must also create an evacuation plan for people potentially affected by an incident on Sumas Mountain or its other facilities. Before beginning construction at its Sumas Mountain, Burnaby and Edmonton terminals, the company must also file for approval of an air emissions management plan. That plan must include timing for

Allwood action required Local business owners concerned about squatters at the former site of the Allwood Estates Mobile Home Park have good reason to demand the property owner and city hall take action to better secure the land prior to its development. The existence of tents abutting fences and neighbouring buildings is justifiably worrying for those concerned about fires starting among the many trees on the property and spreading to businesses. The property crime endured by those enterprises should also not be accepted as unavoidable. Onni Group, which owns the property, has an obligation to ensure that the activities taking place on their land are not harming, or risking harm, to their neighbours. The form that takes is up to the company, but the present situation should not be allowed to continue, even if development is expected to begin soon. If such action is not taken voluntarily, the

city – which has been notified about the issues at the site – needs to step in. The fact the uninvited campers are on private land means a suit brought against the city on behalf of the homeless occupying public property doesn’t apply to this case. However, it does underscore key issues raised by both sides, in which the plaintiffs seek to overturn the city’s ban on camping on public land. Homeless men and women do not have the right to appropriate whatever land they choose, and under conditions they dictate. That said, this situation again clearly illustrates the need for housing options for the homeless so they are not simply moved from one unsuitable location to the next. The absence of such options hurts both the homeless and property owners who must deal with unsanctioned encampments on and next to their land.

It takes just one person to do the right thing Andrew

On Point Someone is going to get killed in the absurd street war in west Abbotsford known as the “Townline Hill conflict.” Correct that – there’s already been one death. By “someone,” I mean a completely innocent bystander out for a walk, or playing outside, or simply being inside a home. With bullets now flying every few weeks, it’s only a matter of time before one of those rounds connects with an unintended target. The second shooting in less than two weeks occurred Monday night on Sandpiper Drive. A 23-year-old guy was found in hospital with a bullet wound in his leg. He is “known” to police, and not in a good way, which would suggest he was supposed to get hit. But in what has become the ridiculous

standard in this situation, he is refusing to co-operate with investigators. This outrageous running battle ostensibly started from petty crap between a bunch of over-testosteroned young men. Somehow that escalated to drugs and gangs and turf, and a level of umbrage that apparently justifies shooting at each other – in heavily populated neighbourhoods, and on public roads, and beside parks and schools, for god’s sake. I’m going to make an educated guess that these thugs are mostly using handguns to bang away at each other. For those who haven’t ever had the opportunity, or inclination, it’s easy to hold and fire a handgun. However, hitting what you are theoretically aiming at is entirely another matter. Many years ago, in the development of a possible policing career, I went through standard police firearms training and regular practice. Believe me when I say it takes literally hundreds, even thousands, of rounds to establish reasonable, consistent accuracy with a handgun. And that’s on a range, in relaxed, controlled conditions. Now add in a combination of accuracy-

eroding factors, such as adrenalin, stress, the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, dark lighting conditions and, especially, sitting in a moving car, shooting at a moving target. The odds of one, or likely most, of those rounds going somewhere other

It’s only a matter of time before one of those rounds connects with an unintended target. than where they were intended is almost guaranteed. And there are a great many more targets around and beyond the guy or car that’s supposed to get shot. People. Houses. Other vehicles. People in houses. People in other vehicles. A typical handgun round travels at more than 1,000 feet per second. Depending on the distance and construction, a jacketed bullet can tear through a car door or the

wall of a home. It then carries on to tear through human flesh. It’s actually a small miracle that we haven’t had to report (yet) that someone has been shot dead in their west Abbotsford living room while watching television or eating dinner or sleeping. Police are doing what they can, as limited as they are by the law. I imagine they have a very good idea of who’s involved in the Townline Hill melee. But without direct evidence that can be used to get a conviction in court, police can’t simply pick up individuals and throw them in a cell. Pity about that... The wanna-be gang-bangers know who is involved, of course. So do friends, and brothers and sisters, and quite possibly, some parents. But no one is talking. It takes just one of them to do the right thing, and start the beginning of the end of this stupidity. So far, no one has had the courage. We’re all waiting for that someone ... whoever you are. You’ll probably save a life. And if it’s all you care about, that life might even be your own.

Train chaos Re: Permanent two-mile long trains running through downtown Abbotsford. If this happens, then corporate greed wins again! The SRY is owned by a billionaire and the planned BNSF trains to run through downtown Abbotsford are owned by one of the richest men in the world (Warren Buffett). Do they care that emergency response times for ambulance, police and fire/rescue will be seriously delayed in Abbotsford? Absolutely not. If they did care, then overpasses would be installed over every crossing. A two-mile long train takes at least five to six minutes to cross every crossing in downtown Abbotsford. That is five to six times longer than any traffic light. They’re planning to run two or three trains a day, which only a fool would think it couldn’t turn into 10 or 12 trains a day. Check out Langley to see the chaos after every two-mile-long train goes through. And they have four overpasses and twice the track speed that Abbotsford has. Abbotsford has only one overpass. Not to mention the occasional vehicle trying to run the crossing and getting hit by a train or a train hitting or running over a homeless person living right beside the tracks. These would create hours of delays waiting for the coroner and investigation! (eight to 10 hours to open a road after a fatality). John Vaughan

Attack ads politically useful In response to G. E. MacDonell’s letter in your August 12th edition: We are all turned off by attack ads, but all parties do it. It must be somehow politically useful or they’d give it up. Regarding the recent Conservative ads pointing up the lack of experience and the reckless spending proposals of the Liberals and the NDP, they attack specific shortfalls in the opposition position that are valid. Quite different than publishing unsupported and unlikely charges against the government in power. Mr. Fast retains my confidence. Warren Sadler

Gymnastics coach assaulted nine victims Abbotsford News

A boy who was taking gymnastics lessons in Langley revealed to his parents in March 2014 that one of his coaches had been touching him in an inappropriate manner. The ensuing police investigation resulted in eight other boys saying the same thing had happened to them and 19 charges being laid against John William Henry, 32. On Friday in Surrey provincial court, several parents of these boys were present at a sentencing hearing for Henry, an Abbotsford resident who previously pleaded guilty to nine counts of sexual assault and one count of pos-

The victims described to investigators that the way Henry touched them made them feel uncomfortable, especially because other coaches touched only their legs or backs to assist them with maneuvers. Other incidents involved Henry exposing himself to the victims; kissing their hands, arms or lips; or looking at their genitals while they were sleeping. In one case, Henry briefly performed oral sex on one of the boys. Harris said that Henry would tell the boys not to say anything about what had happened, because he could lose his job or go to jail. Henry was arrested the same day that the

matter was first revealed to police, and he confessed to a total of five victims. The four others were discovered as police continued to investigate. The child porn charge was laid after Henry confessed to having downloaded images of child sexual abuse and told police that they would find the micro SD memory card hidden in a railing on his bed. Victim-impact statements read in court detailed the trauma that Henry’s actions caused to the victims and their parents. Among the difficulties being experienced by the victims are anxiety, nightmares, a lack of trust and a fear of being left alone. The court also heard findings from a pre-sentence report, including psychological testing, done on Henry. The report indicated that Henry had grown up in a stable and loving home, but became interested in images of child sexual abuse in his 20s because he found them to be “more innocent and less aggressive” than adult pornography. In viewing child porn, he came to see such behaviour as acceptable and he was ignorant of the damage it could do, although the report indicated that he no longer feels that way, Harris said. She said the report states that Henry feels remorse and disgust for his behaviour, would like to apologize to the victims, and plans to participate in sex offender programs while in prison. The Crown and defence presented a joint submission, recommending that Henry receive a six-year sentence. He has been in prison since his arrest.

session of child pornography. (The nine other charges were stayed.) The judge’s decision on sentencing will be given at a later date. During the hearing, Crown lawyer Jodie Harris detailed how, over a nine-month period starting in mid2013, Henry assaulted the boys – mostly ages eight and nine – while he was a coach with the Langley Gymnastics Foundation, where he worked for four years. Most of the assaults involved Henry touching the boys on their genitals, outside of their pants, while assisting them with gymnastic maneuvers or while serving as a chaperon/ counsellor at a summer camp.

Drought STOLEN Chihuahua Power of good THAN JUST takes toll REWARD PASTA! More Fourth parched month Jaeger Blog.blackpress4good.com

Tom FLETCHER Black Press

Water use restrictions, inland fishing closures and a close watch on the warming Fraser River continue as drought conditions extend into a fourth month in B.C. The Fraser River discharge at Hope measured 31 per cent lower than normal Aug. 10, with the temperature at 19.2 C, one degree higher than average. The Canada-U.S. Fraser River Panel projected a temperature of 20.4 by Aug. 16, with all commercial salmon fishing closed in Canadian waters regulated by the panel. The B.C. government extended stage four drought restrictions to the Okanagan region, allowing local officials to suspend water licences depending on stream conditions. The South Thompson, Similkameen, Kettle and Skagit, South Coast and Vancouver Island regions are also at stage four. Low stream flow advisories are in effect for those areas and the Cariboo-Chilcotin. The forests ministry extended its stream fishing ban this week on the Okanagan River mainstem between Okanagan and Osoyoos Lakes. The Kootenay and East Kootenay regions have been declared at level three drought, with voluntary use restrictions of 30 per cent below normal use for municipal, agricultural and industrial water users. Coastal regions have had some relief with rain and cooler temperatures that have reduced the forest fire danger rating to low for much of western B.C. A campfire ban was lifted Wednesday for northern Vancouver Island, and open fires are also permitted in the northwest and Prince George regions. B.C.’s most active fires and new fires continue in the southern coastal region, including the Wood

Lake fire near Harrison Lake, the Elaho and Boulder Creek fires near Pemberton, and the Cougar Creek fire west of Merritt. BC Hydro has also asked customers to reduce electricity use to maintain reservoir levels as dry weather continued in most of the province.

in the Ukraine. During the Second World War, he and his family are exiled to Siberia, but through disastrous circumstances manage to escape and return home. As the Germans arrive, Theo becomes drafted, first as a translator and then into the dreaded and hunted SS. In the meantime, his family is evacuated by the German Army, ending up in Poland, then East Germany. Theo finds them there after being released from a prisoner of war camp. Escape to Paradise is the story of one Mennonite family’s journey from persecution in Europe to Canada, and how strength in one’s faith can liberate anyone despite how many times, and how brutally, they are tested. Pankratz was born in Katharinenhof, a Mennonite village in the eastern Ukraine. After the Second World War, he immigrated to Canada, where he worked in a printing plant. He completed his high school education and went on to medical school, where he specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. He is now retired and lives in Abbotsford with Frieda, his wife of 62 years. Escape to Paradise is available online from the FriesenPress bookstore, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and most online book retailers. Readers can also purchase the ebook on Kindle, iTunes, Kobo, Nook and GooglePlay.

gold with Team BC Two Abbotsford Junior Cardinals claimed gold with Team BC at the Western Canada Summer Games on Sunday. Brett Bass (outfielder) and Cade Smith (first baseman and pitcher) were part of the provincial contingent that toppled Saskatchewan 7-3 in the finals in Wood Buffalo, Alta. Team BC played six games, finishing 5-1 through the tournament.

They notched the most runs of the four participating provinces at 53 and managed the least runs-against with 17. B.C.’s only loss came to Alberta in the round-robin stage. Bass and Smith joined up with Team BC following their B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League playoff run that ended with their club finishing fourth with a 2-3 record.

2015 Canadian Wake Championships organizer James Balzer says spectators should Monster Energy Photo expect high-flying stunts at the championships this weekend.

Wake Championships arrive in Abbotsford The 2015 Canadian Wake Championships presented by Monster Energy and Nautique arrives in Abbotsford on Thursday, Aug. 20 at Valley Wake Park (31515 Walmsley Ave.). Already confirmed to attend the national event are 50 participants and the field may balloon to 80 competitors, according to organizer and wakeboarder James Balzer. There will be amateur riders from across Canada competing, along with a currently unknown number and of men’s and women’s wakeboarders who will be participating in the open invitational, which will close out the event on Sunday. “I’m feeling pretty good about everything,” Balzer said. “This is the first time I’ve hosted an event.” Balzer is a seven-time Canadian national wakeboarding champion and will also be participating. Winners

of this national event will advance to the 2015 World Wakeboarding Association’s World Series, which are being held Sept. 16 to 19 in Portugal. “I am just trying to open doors for amateur wakeboarders,” Balzer said. Bringing the event to Abbotsford will give local and out-of-province riders an opportunity to reach greater heights, he explained. Wakeboarding is a judged sport. For the national championships there will be two events – one which involves a cable with rails and obstacles for riders to take advantage of, and the other involving a free pass around the lake, allowing riders to perform freestyle tricks. Balzer said spectators should expect to see some high-flying stunts like 900s (where rider rotates two-and-ahalf turns) and double backflips. For more information on the event go to wakecanada.ca.

THIESSEN Elizabeth It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Susie Thiessen (nee Klassen) at ARH on Tuesday August 11, 2015. Elizabeth was born on October 9, 1924, in Donskoj, Russia. Their family came to Canada in February 1930, eventually settling in Gem, Alberta and later in Yarrow, BC. She was a prayer warrior bending God’s ear daily and an active member of the choir in each of the churches she attended. She also helped reinvigorate the Ladies’ Mission Circle in the 1970’s that is still going strong today. In her later years she volunteered at the MCC Store helping wherever there was a need. Elizabeth valued education and loved children and had a rewarding career as a teacher. Her family, whom she loved dearly, kept her busy. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, and baking and her zwieback were a family favourite. She was grateful for God’s faithfulness in keeping her over her 91 years and the family would like to thank the staff at ARH for her care over the past 2 weeks. Her husband Daniel predeceased her in 2009. She is survived by her three children: Carolyn (Larry) Kwiatkowski, Arlene (Vern) Penner and Gordon (Julie) Thiessen, 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at Bakerview Church at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, August 19. Online condolences to the family may be made to: www.wiebeandjeskefh.com

Story by

VIKKI HOPES Proceeds from the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show will go to Matthew’s House, a facility that provides respite care for children with complex health-care needs. The facility opened in November 2013 as part of the Dave Lede Campus of Care on Marshall Road adjacent to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Matthew’s House was founded by Andrea and Doug Froese, whose son Matthew was born with severe brain damage and had many physical challenges. Matthew was confined to a

wheelchair, and the Froeses wanted to provide a place where parents could get a break from the challenges of raising a child with severe disabilities. Matthew’s House became part of the Campus of Care project in early 2010. Sadly, Matthew passed away in August of that year at the age of nine, but his legacy lives on. Up to five children at a time from the ages of four to 18 are cared for in a state-ofthe-art residence staffed by experienced caregivers. They can stay anywhere from two days to two weeks. Medical necessities – such as full wheelchair accessibility

and overhead track systems for transferring – are complemented by a multi-sensory playroom and an outdoor playground. Overnight guest suites allow parents to stay temporarily while their child makes the transition to a stay without them. Matthew’s House is facilitated by Communitas Supportive Care Society, an Abbotsford-based service agency. The home is funded completely through the generous support of individuals and community partners. The Campus of Care also includes the Abbotsford Hospice Society’s Holmberg House – an adult hospice – and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. For more information about Matthew’s House or to make a donation, visit mattshouse.ca.

Downtown car show keeps showing support for Matthew’s House Story by

MEGAN LAMBERT The 10th annual Downtown Abbotsford Car show is hitting the streets of Essendene and South Railway with family fun and entertainment on Saturday, August 22 2015. The best part is, it’s all for a good cause. Organiser Bob King says that for seven years, the car show has raised over $100,000 dollars for Matthew’s House --- a home for children with complex care needs to visit while their parents take a much-needed break from the challenges of care-giving. “People had nowhere to take their children so they could go on a holiday, and that’s what this gives them,” he said. “It was an easy decision.” He then went on to say that there is also a personal attachment to Matthew’s House, as his partner is the grandfather of nine-year-old Matthew, the

namesake and inspiration for Matthew’s House. This year, they are hoping to raise even more funds with a new 2015 10,000 horse power t-64 tripple turbine tractor, winning competitions in the United States and making it’s great debut at the car show this Saturday. “It’s won all kinds of awards,” King says. There will also be a 50/50 draw for the Abbotsford Shrine Club and a painting from local artist Diana Ponting to help raise more funds for charity. Dragster “Dirty Edna,” a 500 Hemi, will also roar at the show. The Downtown Abbotsford Car show is known for its collectibles, hot rods, and classics, and will have plenty of cars to look at with over a dozen awards from sponsors. The theme is “Plan to Arrive Early,” as there will be a

special $5 pancake breakfast at Legal Grounds from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with guest Mayor Henry Braun. After breakfast, participants can pick up a $20.00 entrance pack that includes lunch at Anne Maries Cafe or Legal Grounds, a 10th anniversary T-Shirt, a dash plaque, and a goodie-bag stuffed with special offers. Deception, Easy Money, and Austin Belle will provide musical entertainment starting at 10 a.m. and throughout the day at the free stage show, on the corner of Essendene and South Railway. The regular Saturday Abbotsford Farmer’s Market will also be running, and will have goods and produce from local vendors. Fat Fender Ford Coupe is all business and 75 years young Story by

TYLER OLSEN

The son of the owner of a Saskatchewan Ford dealership, Bob Esau has a family picture of his father and uncle at their business, a 1940 Ford nearby. Decades later, Esau can’t help thinking about that car when he considers the hot rod he and his wife are bringing to the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show on this Saturday, August 22, as a featured vehicle. The body of Esau’s all-steel restored 1940 Ford rolled of the production line threequarters of a century ago and was sold in Saskatchewan, before being brought to British Columbia, where it remained in heated storage for more than 40 years, between 1956 to 1999. In 2003, the vehicle was bought by experienced Vancouver hot rod builder Jim Larson, who then went about meticulously restoring and upgrading the vehicle. Bob had always wanted

to have a hot rod, ever since he and brother Doug owned a 1939 Pontiac in the early 1960s. At the time, though, Bob was too young to drive. By the time he moved to Abbotsford, his brother and several friends owned hot rods, and Bob wanted to join in on the hobby. Doug and his brother in law, Jim Lyons, spotted the 1940 Ford at a car show. Several times, they returned to the car, and Doug recommended his brother take a look. The three drove into Vancouver, and the rest, as they say, is history. Bodywise, the vehicle Esau now finds himself owning is a “frame-off” restored 1940 Ford Deluxe two-door sedan that was walnut shell blasted and found to be rust free. All body panels were very good original units that required minimal restoration. The car is finished in 2002 Viper Red base coat/clear coat

paint. Both the front and rear fenders have the undersides rock guarded and the wheel wells are re-enforced. The outside and underside of the original hood is well-finished, as is the roof, which has been restored to very good condition. The rocker panels and door sills are original and the running boards are Bob Drake reproduction. The trunk interior is lined in black carpet with black vinyl battery and spare tire covers. The battery and isolation switch are mounted in the trunk. All the original stainless steel trim is in very good restored condition, and the bumpers, bumperettes and grille guard have been rechromed. The original 1940 Ford chassis has been modified for modern running gear and was sandblasted and finished in black urethane. The side rails

were boxed ed and the stock fuel tank has been reconditioned with a rubberized inner coating. Under the hood, a completely rebuilt GM 305 cubic inch V8 has had many upgrades and includes a ceramiccoated Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold. The engine compartment is finished in Viper Red to match the exterior. Below are some additional modifications performed on this classic ride; • Exhaust system is ceramic coated block hugger headers to ceramic coated 2.5-inch dual exhaust with Flowmaster stage-three mufflers. • Transmission is a rebuilt GM 700 R4 with a shift kit. • Front-end suspension consists of a MacGyver front crossmember with Mustang upper and lower control arms. The differential is a rebuilt Ford Maverick eight-inch with 3.50 gear ratio. • Tires are Cientra Plus

NIGHTof FIRE CRUISE-IN!

P195/65R15 on the front and All season SR4 P235/75R15 mounted on American Racing polished wheels. • Interior has been reupholstered in tan synthetic mohair similar to the original style interior. The dashboard is stock and also finished in Viper Red and has a Bob Drake gauge panel fitted with VDO gauges. • Steering column and controls, including gear selector, is from a 1980 GM van tilt column. • Front and rear seats are stock 1940 Ford benches refoamed and reupholstered in tan mohair. • Door panels have pouches and custom built arm rests in the front and stock arm rests in the rear all covered in tan mohair. There are numerous other upgrades and improvements done to make this vehicle a high quality street rod using a very good car as a basis. Although Bob would like to

claim the build himself he gives full credit to Jim Larson, whose workmanship is evident by the quality parts and attention to detail throughout. And while the hot rod will be on static display in Abbotsford, it frequently hits the open road. Bob and Phyllis have taken several trips up and down the West Coast, as far as L.A., and have never had an issue or problem on any of the cruises. A member of the BCHRA club, Bob attends a few of the show and shine events and has won several awards from those who appreciate the workmanship and quality that goes into building an all steel car. The Ford has also been used in several weddings, including friends and relatives and in one case by a couple the Esau’s didn’t even know.

FREE FAMILY EVENT Next Friday, August 28 6:00pm – 10:00 pm Featuring: Derek Snelson's TEAM WARHAWK Jet Funny Car at 9:30pm (FIRE-UP!) Trophies • Door Prizes • Live Band and so much more! For more information call 604 539 7223 30835 Peardonville Road in Abbotsford
