Maple Ridge doesn’t have a needle exchange service. The Purpose Society provides clean needles to drug users, but the driver of its health van quit at the beginning of this month. The society has not yet found a replacement. Read supports the harm reduction program, but said the city needs support cleaning up needles.
Members of Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue were kept busy on the water Sunday and Monday, and for their efforts, one of them was the victim of theft. The search team was called around 10:30 p.m. Sunday to retrieve six people whose boat had lost power on Pitt Lake. Rick Laing of RMSR said conflicting information about the location of the stranded boaters delayed their rescue. “Once we got that sorted out, it was fairly quick going out, locating them and towing them back.” On Monday, RMSR responded to a call on Alouette Lake just after sunset, dealing with an overdue swimmer who had not returned to shore. Laing said two men headed out to cross Alouette Lake at 6:30 p.m., each on an inflatable pool chairs. One of the men turned back about halfway across the lake, while the other continued on, said Laing. “He had actually made it to the other side and had located a jacket and some shoes and actually an air horn that he used to help signal,” said Laing. “It was a very good ending. The best possible ending for that kind of search.” However, the search team advises that inflatable chairs, air mattresses and such are not suitable flotation devices for large bodies of water and swimming alone over such distances is not safe.

Maple Ridge’s Jesse Stretch displays one of the three needles he came across Tuesday morning in Horseman’s Park. Stretch said in the two months he’s been out picking up dirty needles, he’s found about 300.

or Jesse Stretch, picking up needles has become a parttime duty. For the past two months, he’s been making regular patrols of areas where needles are found after encountering some in a park one day with his step children. “For awhile there, it was getting
ridiculous.” Recently, he’s found fewer needles, although he picked up three on Tuesday in Horsemen’s Park. Stretch, who recently organized a community safety rally in downtown Maple Ridge, estimates he’s picked up 300 needles in the past few months. Hot spots of needle locations seem to move around the city. Nokai Park on 222nd Street and near Harry Hooge elementary are other locations where he’s found needles. “It’s all over.”

Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read doesn’t like the Read number of needles that are ending up on the streets. “The issue for us, there’s a reality that those end up on the ground,” she said.

Crews move historic houses from Vancouver to Hammond on Monday.
Heritage boost for Hammond By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
H
ammond has welcomed two new additions to the neighbourhood that instantly add to the historic feel to the community.
Two homes built in the 1930s arrived from North Vancouver and, as a result, were spared from the wrecking ball. “We’re pretty happy that they’re going in and so is the neighbourhood,” said Heather Patterson, who owns the houses along with Sean McQuillan. The homes were located at 252 and 248 East Fifth St. in North Vancouver and were barged down the Fraser River to the Sylte Shiphard in Hammond, where they touched shore on Monday. After that, they crept along the Hammond roads on a flat bed trailer, with one of them moved to a vacant lot on 206th Street
Tim Fitzgerald/THE NEWS
One of the houses crosses the CP Rail tracks at Ditton Street. and the other to a lot nearby on 113th Avenue. “We really felt that the location we chose reflected the value of the houses,” said Patterson. It’s also close to the water and there are lots of families. “Visually, the area really lends itself to heritage homes, of course.” The houses were built in the 1930s, one for a jeweler the other
for an auto body builder. Patterson said after a foundation or basement has been poured, the houses will be lowered on to the new concrete and renovations will be begin. Once restoration is complete, pegged at $70,000 each, the pair will see what is the best option. Patterson said it cost about $150,000 to move each home, while the two lots in Hammond
cost about $230,000 each. She’s worked closely with the City of Maple Ridge, which she says has been helpful. Hammond resident James Rowley, who’s currently doing his own restoration of a heritage home, says people support the arrival of the new homes. “I haven’t heard anybody say anything negative. Everyone is excited.” What people in the area are concerned about are condos and apartment blocks replacing the old homes. “If we have heritage homes coming in, that strengthens the heritage of the community, I would think.” Rowley said word is out that Maple Ridge wants to preserve Hammond, which is what attracted Patterson. “Articulate your dream and it’s that much closer to happening.” He added that restoring or renovating an old home is more environmentally sustainable than building a new house. He’s renovating his house as a test case to serve as a model to show how people restore homes
economically. “We’re hoping to lead by example.” “In sustainability terms, if can keep an old home, going – the greenest house, if you can keep it going, is the one already standing.” The City of Maple Ridge is currently writing an area plan that will determine how Hammond grows and preserving heritage will be a major part of that plan. Maple Ridge planner Lisa Zosiak said there were likely different influences on home building in North Vancouver and Hammond during the 1930s. But the pair are following all the zoning requirements and have all the permits. “At this time, it looks like they’re aligning.” A concept area plan for Hammond will be ready for council’s review by this fall. Patterson said she’d like to bring in more homes to further enhance the heritage feel. “Our dream is to really bring in some beautiful heritage homes, that would have been destroyed, into Hammond, where they’ll be appreciated.”

If you’re a drug user, even a pot smoker, Alouette Addictions Services wants to see you. It’s a matter of life and death. As fentanyl, an artificial opiate, continues to kill people across Canada, Alouette Addictions is offering its Narcan overdose kit to anyone who wants one. All it takes is an hour of training on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the society’s offices on Lougheed Highway and 225th Street. People can show up or call ahead. Annika Polegato, with Alouette Addictions, said police reports are showing many drugs are now being cut with fentanyl, a deadly painkiller that can be fatal in minute amounts, even through absorption through the skin.
Polegato has even heard reports of fentanyl being mixed with marijuana. “You may think your a ‘casual pot smoker.’ The reality is that it’s possible that you could be getting fentanyl, and, so, I encourage anybody and everybody to come and get a kit.” Alouette Addictions has always encouraged users to get a kit, “but the number of overdoses that were seeing in the community on a weekly basis is staggering. “We’re really pushing … and we’re encouraging people … that are more of a recreational user, or [using] not such a strong drug, to still come in. You don’t know.” The free kits are provided on a completely confidential basis, she added.
The Take Home Naloxone kit includes two syringes, two doses of naloxone, rubber gloves and a breathing tube. The idea is to give them to friends or family of users so they’re handy if a drug user overdoses. Clients watch a video on how to administer the antidote before receiving the kits. If someone is overdosing, the naloxone can be injected into the major muscles right through clothing if necessary. People should never use drugs alone. Alouette Addictions has 15 kits in stock and another 20 on order. People who already have kits can come and have their supplies replenished. In Metro Vancouver last month, 12 people have died from fentanyl overdoses.
‘It’s not a one-for-one system’ Needles from front
“I think there’s an accountability there that resides with the program that’s responsible for the distribution,” she added. “We don’t want residents having to clean up needles. We find needles that still have drugs in them, still have blood in them. It’s unsafe for the public.” The city continues to press its concerns with Fraser Health. It is also working on creating a mapping system so that locations of needles can be disclosed to the public. “For now, we need to keep the public safe and we’re acting in the area of clean up,” Read said. City employees are regularly checking known hot spots, she added. “It’s something we have to resolve quite urgently, in my opinion.” While a search continues for a new outreach worker to provide clean needles to drug users, there hasn’t been a big jump demand for clean needles at Alou-
ette Addictions Services. Alouette gives out about 50,000 clean needles yearly to drug users as part of the province’s harm reduction program. Annika Polegato said it’s difficult to tell if there is more demand now that the Purpose Society’s health van, which provided clean needles, condoms and other personal care items, is operating at reduced hours. Distributing clean needles is an attempt at reducing disease transmission. But in order to get one, a user doesn’t have to give a dirty one in exchange. It’s not a one-for-one system, said Erin Gibson with Fraser Health. But most people want to do the right thing and bring in their dirty needles, she added. Some cities have a needle return rate of 103 or 104 per cent, meaning more dirty needles are coming than being handed out. Gibson didn’t know what the return rate was for Maple Ridge. She said Fraser Health will
work with agencies in Maple Ridge “to find the most appropriate solutions for Maple Ridge.” That could include providing drop boxes for needles or drop off points outside buildings where people can easily leave used needles. B.C. adopted the harm-reduction model of providing clean needles and other supplies to reduce spread of disease in 2002. According to the city’s website, parks staff, as part of their regular work, do look for and dispose of needles in public park areas. Parents should always do a quick look around a playground when they first arrive, the city suggests.
Needle pickup Anyone who finds a needle should not pick it up. Instead, call the city’s switchboard at 604-463-5221. In the evening, call 604-463-9581.

Liberals select local candidate Dan Ruimy acclaimed By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
It’s a now a four-way race for the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission seat in the House of Commons. Local business owner Dan Ruimy was named the Liberal candidate by acclamation last week. He got into politics after federal Liberals started meeting at his Bean Around Books and Tea shop. “The people that I heard in the shop every day– every day I heard what they had to say, hear their frustrations. “Having had this store for the last four years has been a real eye-opener for me as to what happens when you involve people in your community. “I won’t work for Ottawa, I would work for the constituents of Maple Ridge.” Running in this election will be Ruimy’s first foray in politics. But he says his background is in the food business and training more than 300 franchise owners has been good preparation. “I’m not concerned. I’m pretty good at dealing with people and issues and learning how to resolve them.” In 2011, the Liberals drew 2,739 votes under candidate Mandeep Bhuller. Ruimy believes his chances are as good as
any, even though he’s running against the Conservatives and the NDP, who each took 28,803 and 18,835 votes, respectively, in the last election. He doesn’t want to make any policy announcements until he talks more with Liberal headquarters and is reluctant to criticize Conservative Randy Kamp, who’s been MP for more than a decade before announcing his retirement this year. “I think he’s one of the good guys out there. I’m not here to try to shoot down other people. “All I can do is talk about who I am, what I can bring to the table, what my beliefs are and how I work. That’s going to be my focus.” The Conservatives choose their candidate this Tuesday, either Mike Murray or Marc Dalton, while Bob D’Eith is already running for the NDP. Peter Tam announced last week he’s trying for a second time with the Green party. Ruimy said he’s always voted Liberal and started thinking of running as he got more involved with the local group. “More and more, when the decision came for me do this or not, those meetings played a big part. “I believe in getting involved with the community. I feel really good when I’m able to help people. When we accept people, the community is much stronger for it.” A campaign office hasn’t been found yet.

Climate change Kim Campbell was infamously quoted as saying that a 47-day election was no time to discuss serious issues. Fortunately, we are in the early days of an election campaign that is almost twice that long, and will stretch on into mid October. It’s also unusual to have an election campaign during the height of summer, when the weather is often top of mind. So let’s have a debate about global warming. Not whether or not it exists, which has been thoroughly established. There is a worldwide scientific consensus, and every major political party accepts that it is happening, grudgingly or not. There is also ample anecdotal evidence in the form of temperature records that have fallen by the score across B.C. We also have the raging wildfires and water restrictions. Climate change is real. We now need to determine what the best course of action is towards change of our own. There are dozens of options, including changing the way we generate power, increasing energy efficiency, tax incentives, more spending on public transit, and changes in urban planning. Depending on how we choose to proceed, we could find ourselves in a future with electric cars springing up everywhere, as in Norway, and with solar farms popping up across the prairies. Wind farms are another option; or we could pioneer a new generation of safe, efficient nuclear power projects. Or we could simply hunker down and concentrate on using less energy and using what we do create more efficiently. Any of those options are better than our current course, which is barely better than nothing. Our major opposition parties may be willing to attack the government on the environment, but they are still following rather than leading the debates on energy and climate change. It’s up to Canadians to push for the changes we need in Ottawa. – Black Press

Will more voters care this time? VICTORIA – Several readers took me to task for last week’s commentary on the beginning of our long, hot federal election campaign. They pointed out, among other things, that there are substantial cost increases to B.C. Views Elections Canada as well as higher spend- Tom Fletcher ing limits for the parties. And thanks to generous tax deductions for political donations, taxpayers subsidize all party spending whether they want to or not. That’s the system as it is today, so rather than rail against it, it seems more useful to ask what we’re getting for our forced investment in this exercise. First, more leader debates. The traditional main event organized by TV networks for Oct. 8 appears to be a bust, with only Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and Green Party leader Elizabeth May expected to attend. Conservative leader Stephen Harper declined, prompting NDP leader Thomas Mulcair to say he will only take part in debates that include Harper. Harper, Trudeau and Mulcair have agreed to a Sept. 17 debate hosted by The Globe and Mail and Google Canada. This one is to be focused on the economy, which should force participants to get beyond their talking points and pointing
fingers. On Sept. 28 there will be a debate focused on foreign policy hosted by Munk Debates, a charitable foundation. Harper, Trudeau and Mulcair have accepted. May and Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe were not invited to either of these. The national media have decided that the biggest issue currently is the trial of suspended senator Mike Duffy, but this has turned out to be a rehash of facts and assertions heard many times over by those who care. The expense account abuse has pushed the issue of senate reform to the forefront. Harper declared his intention to starve the Senate by refusing any more appointments, after most provinces ignored his call to elect their nominees. Trudeau, having expelled all Liberal senators from the party caucus, has warned that Harper’s plan and Mulcair’s long-standing position to abolish the Senate are both unworkable, if not unconstitutional. Trudeau has promised changes to the senate appointment process, but no specifics so far. Party policies are being doled out one bit at a time, and the national and local candidate debates may help clarify them. Here are a couple that could use closer scrutiny. Harper has promised to revive a stimulus program from the 2009 economic crisis, offering a 15 per cent tax credit for home improvements between $1,000 and $5,000. This sounds great if you’re a homeowner, but does nothing for renters, drives up the cost of housing in already

overpriced urban markets and encourages more consumer debt. Trudeau has promised an additional $2.6 billion over four years for First Nations education on reserves, and accelerated spending on school infrastructure. Mulcair has promised to hold a national inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women. Mulcair and Trudeau both pledge to reverse the Conservative moves to eliminate what’s left of door-to-door mail delivery, and to extend the age of eligibility for the Old Age Security pension from 65 to 67.
Mulcair and Trudeau both pledge to reverse the Conservative moves to eliminate what’s left of door-to-door mail delivery. All of these promises are presented in the most appealing way possible by the parties that promote them, and all involve spending and taxation trade-offs that the parties would prefer not to discuss. Another possible dividend from a formal campaign stretching more than two months is that more voters will pay attention to the real issues and actually take the time to cast a ballot. If that happens, and the long decline in voter turnout is reversed, it’s a good investment. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

First Nations want to be heard in federal election Could impact election in many ridings By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
Chiefs are urging thousands of First Nations voters to get involved in the federal election, to improve the lives of their people. That was the call B.C. Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief Shane Goffriedson put out recently, and it was echoed by Katzie First Nation Chief Susan Miller. “Our population is young; we need to harness this energy, said Gottfriedson. He asserts that a mobilized Nations vote could
have an effect on the electoral result in 51 of 338 ridings. The Katzie is a comparatively small band, with 552 members, but Miller said every vote counts. “I think we can all make a difference, said Miller. “By not voting we consent to the status quo, and the status quo is not good enough for me. “Too many of our families are living in poverty, said Gottfriedson. “Now is the time for our people to mobilize the vote and create innovative partnerships that will help improve the quality of life for First Nations in Canada. He said First Nations people lag behind the rest of Canada in the UN human develop-
ment index. Canada has ranked between sixth and eighth, while first nations fall between 63rd and 78th. First Nations people face poorer health, a shorter lifespan, housing shortages, increased incarceration rates. He pointed at communities with water boiling advisories and the high numbers of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. Miller agreed the poverty on B.C. reserves, including Katzie, is disproportionate to Canada as a whole. Studies have shown that bringing the human development index of first nations to the same level as the rest of Canada would save $115 billion in social costs related to poverty, and
add $400 million to the national economy, said Gottfriedson. Miller said Goffriedson is not the first chief to encourage aboriginal people to get involved politically.

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value.

Man facing raft of charges By Phi l M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
Police, passers-by, and good samaritans were all involved in a rambling crime scene that resembled something out of a Hollywood movie. It all started when a man was approached on 122nd Avenue and Laity Street on Aug. 5. The man was threatened with a weapon and taken to an ATM, where he had to with-
draw money from his account. Two days later, in the afternoon, Ridge Meadows RCMP got a report of a robbery at a downtown restaurant. Police found a suspect in Haney Place Mall, but he took off, only to have a bystander try to stop him. As a result, the bystander was also assaulted, receiving a minor injury in the process.
The suspect was found shortly afterwards, behind Chances Maple Ridge on 227th Street. Karl Marc Cantera, 31, faces charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, robbery, using a weapon in commission of an offence, theft, assault causing bodily harm, assault, escape custody, and failing to abide by a court order. Cantera, of Maple Ridge, appeared in
Port Coquitlam provincial court last week and was remanded in custody. Police also have sent a weapon said to be used in the offences to the RCMP firearms lab to see if it actually meets the legal definition of a firearm. Spokesperson Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said the investigation is complex and crimes involving people “are a top priority with Ridge Meadows RCMP.”
‘Can’t leave doors unlocked’ Rescue from front
Upon returning from Pitt Lake to the search and rescue headquarters on 105th Avenue in Maple Ridge, by Planet Ice and the Albion Fairgrounds, Laing’s wife had her purse stolen. It contained credit cards, cash, a cell phone and small camera. As the search team group returned to their headquarters around 2:30 a.m. Monday, Barbara Laing left her purse on the floor of her car, then headed back
to move a boat and truck. She had left the car unlocked for about 30 seconds when a man stole her purse. “I think it was pure happenstance,” Rick Laing said. “He happened to be there when we came by, saw an opportunity, took it, and was gone.” Laing was not surprised by the theft, but disappointing. “It’s such a relatively common occurrence in today’s society that people can’t leave doors unlocked,
can’t leave stuff around. You know, everything has to be locked up and put away right away. There’s just an element of society that likes to prey on people and take things that aren’t theirs.” It’s not the first incident of this nature. Members of the Mission volunteer fire department were robbed a month ago, shortly after they were out on an emergency call. The thief stole a number of the firefighters’ wallets and personal items.

DOES EVERYBODY MUMBLE?
Short story of Ruskin Mills I n November 1895, in Mission City, 10 men formed the Canadian Co-operative Society. Most of them came from the Maritime provinces, where co-operatives were common. They had probably taken part in the layout and early construction of Mission City before the flood of 1894 put an end to that. The group settled on land in Maple Ridge, where Stave and Fraser rivers meet. Samuel Knox Twigge, a Vancouver real estate broker, owned the land and he offered a part of it for free use on condition that the CCS would operate a sawmill there for 20 years. The co-operative called their settlement Ruskin Mills after British critic of art, architecture and society John Ruskin, whose socialist ideas were hugely influential in the last half of the
19th century. The place name Ruskin Mills was used for the first time in the spring of 1896 and the sawmill started running in the fall of that year. The machinery came from a sawmill that had started a few years earlier on the Mission side of Stave River. Using steam-powered machinery was against John Ruskin’s idea that motive power had to be produced by hand, wind, or water, but this was considered an unrealistic throwback, even in Ruskin’s homeland. In January 1898, a post office with the name Ruskin was opened and that year Ruskin was included for the first time in a city directory. All activities shown in the directory were part of “Ruskin Mills Co. under the management of John T. Wilband, one of the pioneer members of the society. Ruskin Mills Co. was never incorporated.

here is no more a certainty in life than that of death. It shapes our lives from the moment of birth. It is a constant in everyone’s life, dealing the most difficult hands we are forced to play. We have countless fundraisers dedicated to raising billions needed for research. From cancer relays to heart and stroke bike rides, the goal is to make what little time we have on this tiny blue dot better for the people around us. They are noble goals, no question. According to research by the United State’s Central Intelligence Agency, in 2011, about 55 million people die each year. That’s roughly 151,600 each day, 6,316 an hour, 105 every minute, or two every second. According to Statistics Canada, 256,721 Canadians died in a oneyear span from July 1 to June 30, 2013/14. In B.C., there were 32,967 deaths in that 365-day stretch. But the topic of death still looms large in our lives. For Stephen Garrett of Maple Ridge, it’s a conversation he’s more than happy to share. Garrett has teamed up with Lindsay Stroud of Bean Around Books and Tea to host Death Cafe. Every six weeks, the two not only open the doors to the quaint Maple Ridge coffee shop, but provide an avenue for people to open up about one of life’s least popular topics. “Here in North American, I think we have a really bad relationship with death and dying,“ said Garrett. “Nobody wants to talk about it, much to our own loss.” Garrett, who has a masters degree in education and training, said the idea first came to light three years ago and has since taken shape at the cafe. The self-described “death coach” said he wanted to be able to share his own journey of coming to grips with his own mortality. “The Death Cafe is a forum where

Stephen Garrett has partnered with Lindsay Stroud at Bean Around Books and Tea to host Death Cafe. we can talk about death and dying, publicly,” he said. “We can ask questions and get answers, and actually have some fun doing it.” For Garrett, the need to look deeper happened more than 27 years ago, although he recalls the day as quick as someone reciting their own phone number. It was May 5, 1988. A Thursday, at 6:32 p.m. His sister died. “That really shook the foundations of my life. I was a stock broker. A big-money guy, with a BMW, Hugo Boss suits. Two cold hard facts made him look at life differently. But more importantly, he said, to embrace the concept of death. “I tried to negotiate with God to get my sister back, but she wouldn’t take my Ping golf clubs, or my BMW, or my money.” He said he can now look back at her death as a blessing. He spent five years researching and writing a book, called When Death Speaks,
published in June 2013. Garrett said by offering the Death Cafe, he hopes they can provides a place where people of all beliefs and ages can come together and share their knowledge. Stroud said they have a wide range of ages attend, from 16 to 87. They’ve hosted as many as 44 people in one meeting, all out in the front of the cafe, for everyone to see. “It’s something unique and different. But it’s a great way to bring people together,” said Stroud. Garrett recalls one young visitor who chose to come to the Death Cafe over their Christmas party. While he’s passionate about the topic, he admits he was curious. He had to ask why. “She said because the conversations here are real, and important, and vital.” While meetings are scheduled for 90 minutes, they quite often run up to three hours, said Stroud. The reason, she said, is because they quickly realize the cafe is a safe ven-
ue to express their fears and ask the difficult questions. “It allows people to open up to a very daunting topic. People don’t know what to expect. So by talking and sharing, I think it gives them relief,” said Stroud. Garret said he’s noticed that when people are able to express their own unique opinion, some lights go on for other people around the circle. And as someone who has facilitated groups for the past two decades, he said it’s important for people to feel safe at the group. No topic is off limits. There is no judgement, just the freedom to speak. “When we do enter into the conversation, people are able to breath and relax and open up about it,” said Garrett.
What’s on The next Death Cafe goes Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. at Bean Around Books, located at 22626 Lougheed Hwy.

Going up is easier than down Cats really do get stuck in trees Pet Pages By Magdalena Romanow
C
all it a myth, an old wives tale, or simply a common misconception, but a cat who climbs a tree may not always be able to get back down. At our cat shelter, we sometimes get calls about a cat who is stranded in a tree. If possible, we send out our volunteers to retrieve the cat, if not, we turn to social media for help. Each time there is at least one or two people who say, ‘Leave it alone. When it gets hungry, it will come down.’ Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Some timid, fearful, nervous or anxious cats may end up high in the branches of a tree with no courage to come back down. Even brave, outgoing cats may find themselves too high up to even consider coming down. Cats have curved claws and strong back legs that enable them to climb a tree with no issue at all. They are
definitely amazing climbers. However, when it comes to making their way back down, the same is not true. Those curved claws and strong back legs are of no assistance when the cat is trying to climb down. The only way for a cat to descend the tree is to back its way down, or jump. Backing down is very awkward and challenging for a cat, and jumping down only works if the cat is on a lower branch. No cat will hurl itself to the ground from a branch that is 50 feet up, no matter how hungry it is. This is where we encounter the next issue. Cats can only go so long without food before they develop fatty lipidosis, or liver failure. Fat cells stored in the body are metabolized for energy when an animal goes without food for an extended period of time. Fat is packaged with protein and sent through the bloodstream to the cells in the body. If an animal is not eating, the protein becomes unavailable and the fat builds up in the liver, disrupting liver function. This, in turn, makes the cat lose interest in food altogether as it begins to feel ill. On average, lethal liver failure can develop in a cat anywhere from two
to 10 days. Heavy, older cats will develop liver failure quicker than thin, skinny felines. So if a cat is in a tree for over two days, there is a chance that liver failure has set in, the cat has lost interest in food, and there is no motivation for it to come down. Unfortunately, some cats are not vocal when they get stuck and it may be a few days before anyone realizes they are even there. Liver failure can lead to death, and even if the cat survives, organ damage is common. The other myth or misconception is that the fire department will respond to ‘cat in tree’ calls. They do not. Unless a human has climbed up the tree to save the cat, and become stuck himself, the fire department will not respond. We have found that, other than our own volunteers, the most sympathetic and helpful cat rescuers have been tree trimmers. They have the proper equipment and expertise to climb tall trees. If you do see a cat stuck in a tree, please call any of the local rescues. If we can’t help, we will definitely find someone who can. Magdalena Romanow is a volunteer a Katie’s Place animal shelter.

he elite select teams don’t always pick the best players, and those kids who have not been designated the best in their age class should not lose track of their sports dreams. That’s the message Pitt Meadows soccer player Rachel Lee wants up-and-coming athletes to hear, as she prepares to start her career as an NCAA first division goalkeeper. Although she was considered second string by some metro teams in the Lower Mainland, and cut in tryouts, she has won a full academic and athletic scholarship with Alcorn State University, in Lorman, Mississippi. It was an opposing coach who recognized her talent last summer. Ray Goldena k f o r th

Rachel Lee of Pitt Meadows has accepted an NCAA scholarship to Alcorn State University, in Lorman, Mississippi, a first division school. child of the KensingtonLittle Mountain (KLM) FC had a team up against Lee’s silver-level squad from Coquitlam, and despite a barrage of shots, they only managed to put one past her. “She was rough around the
edges, but I don’t know how many shots we got on her, and we couldn’t score on her,” he recalls. Intrigued by this talent, he contacted her Coquitlam coach, and he agreed to let Goldenchild work with Lee.
Goldenchild had played in the NCAA, and has sent other Canadian girls to scholarships in the topflight collegiate league on the continent. He saw that same potential in Lee. But the coach said his new
SPCA
project had a lot of work to put in, to get to that level. “She looked like she was stuck in mud. She couldn’t move her feet,” he remembers. “Goaltending, contrary to popular opinion, isn’t hands – it’s feet.” Lee’s own passion for the sport was one of her best assets as she worked on her game. “She already had all the raw talent. And she soaked up information – the desire was there,” said Goldenchild. “It’s character – that’s what it’s all about, at the end of the day.” Her father Hector Lee saw steady improvement in Rachel as she worked with Goldenchild, and his U-18 Dasmesh team. “Her learning curve just spiked,” he recalls. Goldenchild had Rachel come out and play on the back line, so she could learn that aspect of the game, and then taught her how to start play from the back end. Rachel isn’t aggressive when she plays out, says her
father, but once she pulls on a goaltender’s jersey, she goes after the ball like a rugby player. “It’s like she takes on a different persona when she’s in there,” said Hector. She went to the Starfire Tournament in Seattle with a Saanich Premier team, and at that showcase event allowed just two goals in four games. “That’s when she proved to herself that she could play at that level,” said Lee. She’s the classic late bloomer, and didn’t get serious about soccer until she was already in Grade 10, inspired by the Canadian national team. “I just love to play the sport, and once I started playing goalkeeper, I realized this is what I wanted to do for soccer. After seeing the women’s World Cup, and seeing how the Canadian women’s team did, it lit a light bulb – like ‘I want to do that.’” She paid particular attention to the keepers. See Keeper, 20

‘Inspiration’
Keeper from 19
“They’re like the anchor of the team, and they keep the team in the game, not just by saving shots, but also keeping a positive attitude and making the team push harder.” She has met Maple Ridge’s Karina LeBlanc, the national team keeper, on several occasions – at a soccer camp, when she gave a motivational speech at Pitt Meadows secondary, and again at an autograph session. She said LeBlanc also “started small” in soccer, but her talent won out. “She’s definitely an inspiration.” Once she got serious, Lee tried out for metro teams, but most of them already had a girl earmarked for the position. She couldn’t break in, until Goldenchild opened some doors for her. She played with a West Van premier team, and that calibre really helped elevate her game. He also made Lee believe in herself. “He made me realize after so many times of being turned down, that I am better than I thought myself to be,” she said. “He really built my confidence in my game play, and within myself.” Rachel and Hector put together a video of her playing, and sent it to NCAA schools. They included her marks – straight As, except for one B in English. Soon the scholarship offers started coming in. She plans to study sciences, and is interested in microbiology and virology. Goldenchild expects she will continue to improve and excel at the next level. “She’s a very humble, hard worker,” he said. “There’s no quit in Rachel,” he added. “It’s unbelievable to me that everyone overlooked her.” The sport has opened up opportunities for her quickly, and starting in September she begins a new challenge. “I just want to be an inspiration to other young athletes not just girls, but also boys – work hard, and you can go wherever you want to go.”

We work, we play, we live each day, but something special is missing... ten years after. The backyard you loved so much has been transformed by loving hands. Flowers bloom and waters flow where you once played in soil & sand, still something special is missing... ten years after. The pain is still here, held within, more intimate, more personal, sparked by special memories or chance songs from days past. We still look without, we still seek within... ten years after. Yes, we’ve grown, yes we’ve changed, but there is one thought that still remains... Love is eternal, as is our love for you Col... ten years after, missing you.
