Tense moments as wildfires burn south and north of Creston BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
On Friday evening, Creston Valley firefighters were nearly drawn into battling the Parker Ridge wildfire in Idaho that has been filling the area with smoke for two weeks. “We dodged a bullet,” Canyon-
Lister Fire Department Chief Glenn Guthrie said on Tuesday. “The threat was very real.” Guthrie said he had driven down to check the situation on Friday afternoon. Later in the evening, he drove a fire truck to the border crossing and, seeing a heavy blanket of black smoke rolling in toward the border, sounded an alarm for firefighters to mobilize. “On Friday night, Creston Fire Rescue assisted Canyon-Lister Fire Department at the Porthill/Rykerts

port of entry in protecting the facilities,” Creston fire chief Mike Moore said on Saturday. “Due to the high winds there was concern that the
fire may spread to the port of entry facilities after portions of Porthill were evacuated.” Creston sent its aerial truck to the scene and Canyon-Lister firefighters arrived with a fire engine and two water tenders. “The threat to these facilities passed and crews were not required, but were on standby should the fire spread to this important infrastructure to our community,” said Moore.

Creston Community Auditorium Society volunteers swarmed the auditoirum Aug. 12 to remove the seats — and the work went so quickly it required only one of three planned removal sessions. The school district will prepare the floor shortly, and new seats are slated to arrive and be installed sometime next month.

Water restrictions helping, but levels remain low BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
“We’re still not out of the woods,” said Robin Douville, manager of the Arrow Creek water treatment plant. “The rain the other night helped, but not enough.” Douville and other water system operators in the Creston Valley have spent the summer anxiously watching water sources, hoping for rain that will help their levels to rise. On Monday he reported that Arrow Creek, which supplies water to Creston and Erickson, might be at “a 100-year low — it’s certainly the lowest I’ve seen in my 30 years here.” Fortunately, Douville said,
public response to water restrictions has been impressive. “I didn’t really expect such a good response when we went to Stage 3 (which eliminates the watering of lawns, among other restrictions) but driving around Erickson and Creston I am not seeing many green lawns,” he said. The reduction in demand has allowed the Town of Creston to shut off its water wells, which supplement the water supply on the west side of town. Improvements at the Schikurski Park pump station will allow the town’s pumps to push water further east, but in the meantime they can only provide for a portion of the service area. Peak demand, he said, has
passed with the completion of the majority of the cherry harvest. But low creek levels are not allowing reservoir levels to recover, leaving the area vulnerable if a large fire breaks out. “If we had to produce for the peak demand (including orchard and lawn watering) we couldn’t do it,” Douville said. “We could not return to Stage 2 at this point — we just don’t have the water. If we get a rainfall once every week or so, I think that will get us through.” With only one day with rain forecast in the next two weeks, a significant change in the local supply doesn’t seem likely. “If we had an interface fire we’d be in tough to fight it,” Douville said.

The Town of Creston will apply for three electric car charging units, town council decided at the Aug. 11 regular meeting. The charging units (one EV unit and two Tesla units) will come from Sun Country Highway at no cost, and the $3,300 installation fee — $7,500 if each unit requires a separate pedestal — will be covered by the Regional District of Central Kootenay economic development service (Areas A and B, and the town). “It’s something we can capitalize on for two years, then everyone will have it,” Mayor Ron Toyota said at the meeting. The units are part of a Highway 3 Mayors and Chairs Coalition initiative to develop an “Electric Highway 3” from Princeton to the Alberta border. Once enough charging stations are in place, they can be marketed, and the coalition will ask the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to erect signage. The goal is not only to provide a free charging service — the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce will cover the costs of each $1-$2 charge — but encourage drivers to spend time in Highway 3 communities. “When an EV is being charged for an hour, the driver and passengers would be encouraged to stroll our downtown to dine, snack and shop,” said Toyota after the meeting. Council Briefs •Council granted the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce permission to obtain a licence of occupation for a Stewart Steinhauer carving to be placed on town right-of-way at the north end of the Visitor Centre parking lot adjacent to the new Pine Street-Northwest Boulevard intersection. “It will just nestle in among the trees there,” said town manager Lou Varela. Steinhauer’s large carvings — this one is about three by five feet — have previously been placed next to the Visitor Centre and Creston and District Community Complex entrances. “This is his way of showing it, but in such a way that we, as the Town of Creston, benefit from it,” said Toyota. •Council received no opposition from a small gallery of homeowners at a public hearing to correct a zoning error for 28 Alice Siding properties. Under current laws and bylaws, should a legally non-conforming structure — such as a home or apartment in that largely industrial section of town — be destroyed more than 75 per
cent above the foundation, that property would lose its non-conforming status and must not be rebuilt. The amendment passed unanimously. “The intent is to legitimize existing singlefamily and multi-family uses,” said Lou Varela. •Permission for the Creston Valley Forest Corporation (CVFC) to put wood “cookies” on the fence at the intersection of Northwest Boulevard and Cook Street — similar to the sturgeon already placed there by Adam Robertson and CanyonLister elementary school Grade 5/6 students in 2012 — was delayed, pending a report from staff. The CVFC will be working with 80-100 Grade 5 students during September’s National Forest Week, and have students answer “When you look to the forest, what do you see?” by painting their thoughts on a cookie. •Staff will apply for Union of BC Municipalities and Jeff McKelvey Scholarship grants for town intern Hélène Miles and manager Lou Varela to attend upcoming professional development courses through, respectively, Capilano University and the Local Government Management Association. see council, page 4

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Lloyd Fox at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB on August 8, 2015. In the days before he left this world, Lloyd was surrounded by people who loved him dearly. Lloyd was a very kind and loving man, devoted to his family. He will be greatly missed by Madelyn (Maddie), his wife of 62 years; birth daughters Janet and Margaret and chosen daughter Ann; grandchildren Jeremy, Ryan and Erin; tiny, new great-grandson, Travis; and special friend, son-in-law and fellow Lion Ed. Lloyd will also be missed by his brothers and sisters; nieces and nephews; extended family members and many friends. Lloyd lived a very memorable and active life. He was born in Cluny, AB but spent most of his youth in DeWinton and Calgary. He served in the military for 12 years and travelled to several places in Canada and South America. After leaving the military, Lloyd worked in Shell Canada’s computer centre in Edmonton and then Calgary for 22 years, where he made numerous friends. On retirement, he and Maddie moved to Creston, BC where they spent 18 happy years and created countless happy memories with visiting family and friends.
Lloyd’s grandchildren have many fond memories of the summers they spent with Papa and Nani in Creston. In 2006, Lloyd and Madelyn moved to Claresholm to be near family in Calgary. During their 9 years in Claresholm, Lloyd made lots of new friends and was blessed with great neighbours. Lloyd was an active member of the Masonic family for more than 55 years as a Mason and also a Shriner. After moving to Claresholm, he became a member of the Claresholm Lion’s Club and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #41 (Claresholm). Trip offers firsthand look at state of Russian economy To the Editor: On June 27, my son Brian and I left on a 25-day tour of Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Russia. It is another world out there, which our media tells us very little about. In our travel through villages, towns, countrysides and the streets of cities, we found that President Vladimir Putin was well respected and admired, and that Moscow was the centre of that part of the universe. Besides being a very popular tourist destination, (one of the most expensive cities in the world), people from Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and, of course, Russia go to Moscow to work; they work 20 days there and come home for 10. Moscow is a hive of activity everywhere. We came into Moscow from two different directions, and there are new four- and six-lane highways leading into the city. The streets are clogged with BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, Volvos, Cadillacs and every other American and Japanese car. Men in silk suits and shiny briefcases hurry by, too preoccupied or on their iPhones to give you a smile or a glance. I could have spent my entire time sitting on the street photographing the different ladies’ footwear, toenails painted to match their shoes and handbags. And what about the West’s embar-
OPINION LINE
go and sanctions? To KFC, Burger King and McDonald’s, it seems the business is as usual. The ordinary individual in Russia welcomes the embargo. People were getting upset about the many imports, and now Russia has geared up very quickly to becoming self sufficient developing their own industries. A young couple we stayed with in a village were into making cheeses; their product has gone up 60 to 75 per cent since the embargo. A lady running a souvenir kiosk, said, “Look at my stock. It is all made in Russia now.” On the other hand, while visiting in Georgia, which is under U.S. dominance, the general populace is very upset about the embargo. Georgia has a centuries-old wine industry. Russia was the main buyer, and now they cannot sell to Russia. Georgia grows tons of watermelon; again, Russia was the main buyer. Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally, is investing $10 billion US in the next five years in the Russian infrastructure. Putin’s goal is to make Russia 100 per cent self sufficient in its food industry within the next 10 years. At the present time there is a summit underway between Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) to establish a new development bank, with an emergency currency pool, each to be armed with $100 billion, to rival the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Russians are very conscious about their diet. A bill has been submitted to curb fast food advertising. If passed, the bill would ban advertising aimed at youth, and would require that such ads be accompanied with a health warning, No advertising would be allowed within 100 metres of gyms, medical clinics, military buildings, cultural venues, libraries or schools. Alex Ewashen Creston
Attack ads a new low for Conservatives To the Editor: I didn’t think it was possible, but with their latest attack ads the Conservatives have hit a new low. I thought they had reached bottom with their attacks on Canada’s lakes, on freedom of speech for Canada’s scientists and on democratic process in parliamentary debate. And I haven’t even mentioned the attacks on their own appointees and staff in the Senate and election fraud scandals. But these older attacks are nothing compared to their newest attack ads. By borrowing imagery from terrorinvoking ISIS propaganda they are doing what many critics have condemned as a violation of laws built into their own anti terror bill. In these new ads, we see Caucasians in orange suits lined up awaiting decapitation, we see four men bound together in a cage that is sinking into deep water and we see the horrifying black and white ISIS flag flying high in shot after shot. Are you terrified enough to vote Conservative yet? Are you buying into Harper’s apocalypse? This ad attacks more than Mr. Harper’s kinder and gentler political rivals. It attacks common decency, the intelligence of the average voter and the possibility that we can feel safe in our homes and in our communities without Harper and his Harbots to “beat ’dem ISIS down.” Don’t drink the Kool-Aid, dear voters. Don’t do what MP David Wilks has done and abandon your principles to fear of reprisal for standing up to them, and to the illusion of self-interest. Don’t vote Conservative. Kuya Minogue Creston
Library will survey community
Imagine a virtual library, with no long rows of books, no comfy chairs, no friendly staff to help you check out and no children’s play area. Instead the “library” would consist of a tax-funded Internet portal providing access to thousands of the latest
The Book Drop Aaron Francis ebooks and online magazines. Programming staff could continue to offer programs wherever people gather — at parks, family centres and so on — while library-owned internet kiosks might be placed at various locations around the community. Not your cup of tea? Try these ones: Imagine a library that doesn’t just provide access to books and online information, but that facilitates collaboration among community members and creation of new knowledge sources in an infinite variety of formats. Imagine a library that is a leader in environmental sustainability, advocates for socially excluded communities, sup-

ports community economic development and is a partner is broader community development initiatives. Sound better? The current model of library service is threatened on numerous fronts. Fraser Valley Regional Library’s Scott Hargrove eloquently articulates this, “For the first time, libraries face strong competition in traditional core service areas — including lifelong learning, community programming and access to both content and information, to name a few. … It could be argued that the competition is doing a better job, at a lower cost. Given the environment of fiscal restraint in which we currently live, is it any wonder that our funders, communities and our profession itself are looking at the relevance of library services with a sharply critical eye?” The Royal Society of Canada has also weighed in: “[We are] concerned that many of Canada’s rural public library boards may lose their ability to provide even minimal services. The reason is simple; books and other library material are migrating to the digital world and small, poorly funded rural libraries cannot, on their own, support either the technology or the cost of digital collections.” It is time that we rethink our role, to evaluate what is really important to us, to reflect critically on our ability to meet
changing needs, to be visionary and to be unafraid to change. As a passionate advocate of libraries and lifelong lover of books and learning, I am excited by the challenges ahead. It is important to me that my children and grandchildren have the same free and universal access to information and knowledge that I and generations before me had. To ensure this, we need to embrace the future and the changing needs of our community. The transformation process must be guided by the people who live in the community, both those who use the library and, critically, those who do not. We need to hear from all of you. Over the next few months, I and members of the staff and library board will be out in the community asking you these difficult questions. We’ll be on the street, at the community complex, at the farmer’s market and fall fair, and more. Rudyard Kipling famously observed that Alberta had all hell for a basement when he visited in 1910. Now, 105 years later, I wonder what he would have to say about the summer we have experienced here in B.C. I went to bed in Naramata on Saturday night dreading the return drive to Creston, faced with the prospect of driving north through Kelowna and Vernon, then over to the Arrow Lakes, across the ferry and to Castlegar. The night got better when I checked my cellphone and learned that Highway 3 had reopened after three days of closure for the Rock Creek fire. It has been part of the deal on visits to the Okanagan both this summer and last, sitting in the evening and watching fire activity. The deck where I stay at Summerhill Pyramid Winery in Kelowna has twice provided views across Okanagan Lake to West Kelowna, beyond which fires seem to have become a regular occurrence. Last summer I watched helicopters swoop down to scoop up water from that same lake, only from Naramata, where a hillside fire threatened to drop down toward the tiny and very compact community and wineryfilled area. As I drove home through Oliver, where fires were burning on the mountainsides, Osoyoos, where smoke from Rock Creek filled the air, Greenwood (where I joked with the lovely folks in the Deadwood Café that their “This is a smoke-free environment” sign was false advertising) and into Creston, where the night before Creston Valley firefighters had crossed the U.S. border to be ready if the fire that has been raging for more than a week started to move into Lister and West Creston, I thought about Kipling. I also thought about how these events bring out the best
and worst in people. On Friday evening I read a Facebook post that repeated a report from an unknown source that a winery on Black Sage Road near Oliver had burned to the ground. Shortly after came a similar report about a different winery. On that same night, a number of people received calls that Lister was being evacuated. None of those news items had a lick of truth to them, proof that idiots are alive and well, starting and spread-
This summer saw B.C.’s MLAs return to the legislature for a rare and short six-day session over two weeks. Premier Christy Clark was calling us back for Bill 30, legislation that cements her agreement with Malaysian government-owned Petronas to develop liquefied natural gas (LNG). She called it historic, and she was right. Never in all my studies or experience have I seen a Canadian federal, provincial or local government so desperately quick to sell out its people and their future for a photo op. Big promises were made last election. Namely, Christy promised five LNG plants up and running by 2015. There are none. She promised the results would be a debt-free B.C. and a prosperity fund to pay for health and education. There is no fund and she’s racked up debt faster and higher than any other premier. She also promised a doctor for everyone by 2015, but with 200,000 people still without a doctor, she has failed there too. Whether or not you like her promises, one thing is certain: she has not delivered and is desperate. So there we were in Victoria debating a bill that had no protection for local hires and local purchases, reimburses large corporations for any tax increases, forces you to pay for any new technologies that reduces the industry’s environmental footprint, and requires no support for conserving our land, water, air and the wildlife who
live there. In contrast, Australia negotiated for all of these when at the table with the LNG sector. So why not B.C.? I’ve heard from many of you that environmental protection is of utmost concern, so I spoke to that during the
Lorne Eckersley ing rumours with impunity. But it was impossible to ignore the fact that, idiots (including those who drive into damaged areas to satisfy their curiosity and more modern ones who fly drones into fire zones, grounding air response efforts) aside, these events highlight the value of a well-organized society that co-ordinates responses and prioritizes needs. It seems almost miraculous that the hundreds of fires burning around the province haven’t caused even more destruction to human settlements. The 30 residences burned in the Rock Creek area are the first this year, to my knowledge. We’ve been lucky here in the Creston Valley, though it might not seem like it with smoke-filled air inflaming respiratory issues and reminding us that danger is not all that far away. But with water levels at historic lows and tinder dry interface areas surrounding our communities,
we are incredibly vulnerable, as are others throughout the province. But in those communities are firefighters and resources at the ready, heading out at each report of fire. Anyone want to complain about the tax dollars that support those services now? I thought it was especially heartening when I learned that firefighting crews raced from the Creston Valley to the Rykerts border crossing on Friday night, as winds threatened to push the Parker Ridge fire north and into our own communities. The border at the U.S. can seem like a barrier at times, but that co-operation between our countries can be organized so quickly is comforting. With Environment Canada already predicting similar weather for next year, and even climate change deniers like our prime minister grudgingly admitting that our environment is morphing at a rapid pace, grey might become the new blue during the summer months, when smoke-filled air dims skies, reduces visibility and hampers breathing. Many of us in this province believe we are living in an earthly heaven, even at this short distance from Kipling’s “all hell” (the reference was to the vast gas reserves around Medicine Hat, which he visited). The fires that dot the province, though, even as we are only early into the traditional fire season, are reminders that our heaven can turn into horror with the crack of a lightning bolt or the casual tossing of a cigarette from a vehicle. They should also give us cause for gratitude that we have services and resources that work to protect us, and firefighters who willingly go into danger on our behalf. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.
No good news from session In Your Corner Michelle Mungall debate. Normally, governments give themselves the right to mandate new technologies and practice onto industry for the public good. Abolishing beehive burners, requiring fuel efficiencies and removing lead from gasoline are just a three examples of government lawmaking that have benefited health and environmental protection. The B.C. Liberal government, however, has legislated that they will reimburse the LNG industry for any cost associated with changes imposed on the industry to reduce environmental impacts. This effectively acts as a disincentive to do the right thing — not to mention is a major form of corporate welfare that just isn’t palatable for the Kootenays or anywhere in B.C. Sadly, not only did we see a historic sellout of our assets and a bad
deal for B.C., but we saw a new low in how this government doesn’t care about people. Along with the debate on Bill 30, we saw the Liberal government sidestep its responsibility for firing health researchers and costing a man his life; we saw it ignore Johnsons Landing’s need for drinking water while they continued to fund the fake town of Jumbo, and we saw it justify increases to child poverty with maternity leave clawbacks from new mothers receiving income assistance. But most notably, I didn’t think it possible to see any government stand by their actions that resulted in children being sexually abused. Yet, that happened too this summer. In reflecting on those six days, it’s hard to believe that we saw our province take an even further down turn. I wish I had better news from this summer session. Thankfully, connecting with so many of you here in the Kootenays shows there is a better way forward. We are caring communities and we have great ideas on how to make the world a better place for everyone. Working with you to make that happen is a real honour and I know we can do it. Michelle Mungall is the member of the legislative assembly for the NelsonCreston provincial riding, and is the Opposition critic for social development.

Exploring your dreams
How many of us reach our later years or are approaching end of life with unfulfilled dreams? I suspect there are many of us. Why? We grew up in times when there wasn’t any extra money or the opportunities to explore those hidden yearnings.
The Voice of Experience Christine Munkerud Now, we are in an age where there are courses and groups exploring and sharing their knowledge on innumerable subjects, arts, crafts, books, sports, etc. Most of these opportunities are not expensive, especially at the local community level, and now we have more free time. It is easier for people with strong desires, independent natures and strong wills to find ways to explore their dreams. Many of us were restricted by parents struggling to make ends meet and provide for the family’s necessities. Dancing, gymnastics, art classes, hockey and more were out of the question for most families not so long ago. Some parents sacrificed to enable children to take a sport or learn some activity that they would dearly love to have done themselves. Now that many of us are older we regret that we were not more courageous or adventurous in seeking out ways to fulfil our dreams. We often sacrificed ourselves to satisfy others and their expectations of us. So before we get any older, any stiffer or less able, let us look at what we can do to explore our real selves, and put aside the life others expected of us. Those dreams are often the keys to talents, ideas or activities that are our special gifts to this world, gifts that are part of our uniqueness and that give meaning to our lives. What is important to us as we grow older? The satisfaction of doing well activities which give us pleasure, such as ballroom dancing, painting, woodwork or woodcarving, acting on stage, reading for long periods, learning about herbs, healing weaving, cooking, photography, travelling, etc. Sometimes those dreams are still available to us. Fortunately, there are many courses and groups which have sprouted up through community colleges, sports and recreational centres, churches and individuals wishing to share their talents. It is worth while asking around at the local chamber of commerce, school board, college, recreational centre, churches and Therapeutic Activity Program for Seniors (TAPS), as well as the Internet. The satisfaction of learning and sharing the pleasure of enjoyable pursuits is so important to our mental and physical health and the social interaction has many benefits. Pleasure and satisfaction take us away from thinking about our pains and worries and make each day glow with greater meaning. We begin to know more about who we are and what we can contribute and share with others. To find meaning in our existence is vital to our deeper happiness and health. Viktor Frankl, an Austrian psychologist, talks much about this aspect of his study in the Auschwitz death camps. The prisoners only remained alive in those terrible circumstances by finding meaning in their existence. This could mean waiting to see their growing children, getting even with the guards or coping with their prison situation. Frankl talks about how he watched prisoners who had given up because they could find no meaning in their existence. We see such tremendous courage and determination in some of the war-torn countries where parents struggle to keep going for the sake of their children, to reach a more desirable place, to give them a better life. TAPS a cool place in summer
“The challenge of history is to recover the past and introduce it to the present.” —David Thelen

family recipes. Yet not everyone has family close by, and may have little contact with the younger and other generations for these sharing moments. At the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS), we strive to elicit and safeguard these souvenirs, memories and reminiscences so that they might be valued by the seniors and enjoyed and shared with upcoming generations, whether in families or in our communities. Healthy Intergenerational and Multigenerational Connections is a yearlong program made possible by a grant from New Horizons for Seniors. This summer, we have been working with Grizzly Bear Out of School Care on several projects all around this theme. Over the year, we will be developing more projects with other groups. A nature stories quilt was our first project with the Grizzly program. The seniors shared stories about favorite pets, mothers’ gardens and barnyard creatures. These stories were then painted on fabric pieces by our junior Rembrants to be sewn into a quilt to be displayed at TAPS. The current project is about first and or favourite homes. Recently, everyone paired up and each senior described their first or favourite home and the children created images using drawing and collaging. A following visit with them will reverse the process with the seniors constructing an image from the children’s stories. Both parties have greatly enjoyed working together and hanging out. The initial shyness for some quickly developed into trust and curiosity, and the children were great at asking questions. Another way of documenting other stories is to create recordings. We plan to share these in various ways. Thanks to the Teen Action Committee who have agreed to work with us. The Creston Museum has been a huge help this summer, as well, with afternoon tea, orchard
tours and even a visit to Creston in 1915 with special guest Jean Ramsay Mallandine (a.k.a. museum manager Tammy Hardwick) who acted as our tour guide. Thanks to the crew there, our clients have had an opportunity to see town in a new way, and have participated in many events that they might otherwise be unable to attend. When one thinks of history, memories of high school classes and dusty textbooks come to mind. History is so much more, its lost centuries still being unearthed: the cultures of long ago (and ones not so long ago) and even what we did yesterday afternoon. History is everything that has happened. We recognize that it is important to record the eyewitness accounts of our past before they are lost to us. Additionally, on an individual level, it has been reported in a wide variety of studies, that reminiscing and sharing stories has a positive benefit to the well-being of all of us as we move along in life.
Happy birthday to Stanley Wedge as he celebrates his 100th birthday in September with family and friends! Staff changes are a reality, with the mixed feelings of sadness to see someone go, yet happiness for them in their next endeavor. Such is the case with Hans Bringmann, who has become a valued member of the TAPS team and endeared himself to our participants. His talents, skills and personality have added much to our program, and we wish him well in his work at Swan Valley Lodge. We are looking forward to working with our newest staff member and next month we’ll introduce her. You may recall that we ran the first half of Moving Along Together, a program funded by a Columbia Basin Trust social grant, in the spring. It was designed for people experiencing memory loss and caregivers.

A lot to do during pool shutdown
Despite the temperatures outside, it has been chilly in the arena as our time off without ice has now passed for this year. The compressors were fired up a couple weeks ago to gradually chill the concrete slab to the
From the Centre Neil Ostafichuk freezing point and then the time immemorial process begins of sealing the floor with a fine spray to get the bond to the concrete. Following that, a sprayed coating of white paint is laid in both directions, then another few seal coats of water, which creates the palette for all the lines and logos. That painting, which is a hands and knees job, takes a couple days depending on complexity of logos or centre line art, but once done, really snaps against the white background as it is the best it will look before all the skating starts. Wrapping up the
process are many layers of water in small floods to build up to the approximate thickness of three-quarters of an inch. If you are on our email list, you will have received our message about the leisure guide coming out soon with all the fall programming. There are some pretty interesting programs and events scheduled for autumn, so make sure you check it out when it hits your mailbox this week or go online to view at www.rdck.ca right now (remember to scroll down). If you are the frugal sort (they use a different term for me at work), you need to check out the Shutdown Showcase in the leisure guide, which gives you several options for things to do during our annual pool shutdown Aug. 29-Sept. 11 and some are free! Mind you, don’t think you are off the hook during the pool shutdown and you can kick back and take a free course on craft beermaking or wine tasting for the common man; we still want you to maintain that rippling physique you earned through aquafit and swimming, so our courses focus on fitness. Of course if you haven’t attended a class before, here is the perfect opportunity to grab a friend (safety in num-
bers) and check it out for the small price of simply showing up to the community complex. We are not expecting anything unusual during our annual shutdown, in which we drain all the pools, scrub and inspect the whole aquatic area, especially the ones usually underwater. We do keep a pretty close tab on regular maintenance and cleaning but there is some work to be done that can only be achieved with a closure. This includes some pretty intensive cleaning and maintenance in the back mechanical room, including our filtration and disinfection systems that provide us with the clean sparkling water we are used to. I just flashed back to our old outdoor pool, the James Ross Memorial Pool, which served the community well for years but presented some different challenges with maintaining water quality when faced with dust storms in the parking lot, leaves, rocks, downpours, critters and blazing sun all conspiring against our maintenance staff attempts at preserving balance. Fun times, but in the end it was all good! Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Vancouver quintet visiting on launch tour SUBMITTED
The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra is a collection of musicians, linked by common sonic journeys and familial ties. It doesn’t matter much how they got here, but rather that they are traveling with each other. The group’s long-awaited new album, Love, comes out Aug. 21, followed by over 25 dates on their western Canadian tour, which brings them to the Snoring Sasquatch on Aug. 24. Love is an album about that much-storied sentiment that is certainly no stranger to a song. What makes the Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra’s nine new love songs unique is that it collects differing experiences into one harmonized narrative, tearing apart the layers

and revealing how hard good people work to be good to each other. It’s an album that speaks to the consequences of love in its many forms, seeing it as both sugar and lemons, suggesting that to have one without the other would make the recipe incomplete. “The creation of Love was a family affair, which is a feeling our group has always embraced,” said Kurt Loewen (vocal, guitar, keyboard). “Our dear friends not only provided the space for the making of the record, designed the set for the front cover and had a hand in the naming of the album, but Emily, my wife, produced it and was the graphic designer.” Tickets are $15 in advance at Buffalo Trails, and $18 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8.

FOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY
Footlighters casting Nana’s Naughty Knickers
Community
Following this weekend’s production of Shakespeare in the Park (Or Something Like It) VI, Footlighters Theatre Society’s 21st season continues, with auditions for Nana’s Naughty Knickers running at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Snoring Sasquatch. The comedy runs Dec. 3-5 at Prince Charles Theatre and will be the first Footlighters production directed by Gary Atha, who was most recently seen onstage as ice cream shop propietor Pop Sicle in The Great Ice Cream Scheme. Nana’s Naughty Knickers is the story of Sylvia Charles and her granddaughter Bridget, who are about to become roommates. Bridget’s unique opportunity to stay with her grandma in New York becomes an experience she’ll never forget when she discovers her grandma is running an illegal boutique from her apartment — selling naughty lingerie to senior citizens! “I was involved in a production of this play several years ago, and it almost literally had the audience rolling in the aisles,” said Atha. The production requires five women and three men, with three main female roles and one main male: •Sylvia Charles — in her early eighties,

I am a MALE, I'm shouting this because it took a while to figure it out. That's what happens sometimes when you come in as a kitten... so, like I said, I am a male with charming good looks. I like to have fun, but not always as silly nilly as some of the other ones in the Kitten Pad. Why don't you come down and meet me and see if my "laid back cool kitty" vibe is your style!

Fork truckin’ along offering local food
W
hen Maria Aryan was growing up, food was a big part of her family life. Her dad is Persian and her mom is German, and both love to cook. “The kitchen’s always the best place to be in the house,” Aryan said. “It smells good, there’s good food Story and and a real sense of family.” photo by Instead of a simple Brian jelly in her lunch, she Lawrence would occasionally find eggplant stew and rice. “It was definitely a lot different than a lot of kids growing up,” she said. “I took it for granted when I was little, but now I appreciate that my parents took the time to put something together with love.” That upbringing instilled a passion for good food, something Aryan now shares with the community with her Fork food truck, which she opened last summer. It’s seen regularly at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, the Picnic in the Park concert series, Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery (every second Friday) and Faramon Farm (Thursday and Friday lunch), as well as special one-time events, such as this weekend’s Shakespeare in the Park (or Something Like It) VI. “If more stuff like this keeps happening, I’m 100 per cent behind it,” she said. Her food has become popular, with a burger the only constant on the menu. Aryan tries to have a chicken and pork option, as well — Argentinean pork is a feature this month — along with salads and popsicles. And don’t forget about the cheesecake. “Cheesecake has a soft spot in my heart,” she said. “I think it’s wonderful and more people should eat it.” All of the food Aryan serves is homemade, using only local products. “All of the ingredients, with the exception of oil and salt, come from here,” she said. She even makes her own sauces. “It takes a little more time, but it’s worth it,” she said. Aryan grew up in Creston, and left after graduation to backpack around Europe, where she studied in Finland and Germany.
Maria Aryan serving up dinner in the Fork food truck.
But a chance viewing of the Pixar Animation Studios film Ratatouille, in which Remy — an anthropomorphic rat — dreams of becoming a Parisian chef changed everything. “I saw that and said, ‘I’m that rat!’ ” Aryan said. She enrolled at the College of the Rockies culinary school in Cranbrook, and went on to work at Victoria’s Rebar (vegetarian), and Vancouver’s Burgoo (comfort food) and Beaucoup (French bakery).
“I’ve managed to work in some really awesome places,” she said. During her time away, Aryan kept vacationing in Creston, wanting to move back. When she and her brother got talking about opening a food truck in Creston, her plan was clear. Her brother, an engineer, built Fork to be as efficient as possible — it runs off a battery instead of a generator, it has a sunroof for natural light and uses a flash heater instead of a hot water tank. And
like every good chef, Aryan said, she cooks over an open gas flame. Last year, she ran Fork until the end of September, and will be trying to stretch the season out longer this year. And that will give her a chance to make even more happy customers — whose reactions make all the hard work worth it. “I don’t want somebody to say, ‘That wasn’t bad,’ ” Aryan said. “I want somebody to eat it and say, ‘That was really nice.’ That’s the glorious moment.”

Golden Herb Health Foods owner Linda Gigliotti-Mickelson (right) got a visit from a team asking questions about the state of her business and how it could be improved on May 25. Listening to her responses were (from left) Creston Mayor Ron Toyota, Barb Williams (Basin Business Advisors program, managed by Community Futures) and Kim Goodall (Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training).
Nearly all Creston business owners have positive outlook BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Ninety-four per cent of business owners have a positive outlook, Kim Goodall of the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training told Creston town council at the Aug. 11 regular meeting. Goodall appeared before Creston town council at the Aug. 11 regular meeting to give an update on the Business Walk program, a partnership between the ministry, the Town of Creston and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. She and 20 volunteers visited 68 downtown businesses, which employ a total of 457 people, during the May 25 event. “It was really a wonderful opportunity for me as I am passionate about small business,” Goodall said. Along with the positive outlook, 58 per cent said business is good or increasing, a higher percentage than the three other communities Goodall has visited with Business Walk. Volunteers found that a number of businesses wanted more parking, and after discussion, “we found that what they really were wanting was more handicapped access to their business,” Goodall said. Town manager Lou Varela said that additional handicapped spaces have since been added in response to the concern. Of concern, Goodall said, 41 per cent of business owners—well above the provincial average of 30 per cent — plan to sell or retire by 2020, and 12 of those have no serious plan for their businesses to continue.

“We really don’t want to have 12 storefronts empty,” she said. A definite positive that came out the event is that it helped businesses band together. Some groups wanted to improve marketing, and a group is getting together in September to CRESTON discuss it. “It was some nice low-hanging fruit, and we were able to identify that and work on it in a HOSPITAL month,” said Jim Jacobsen, executive director of the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. A second phase is planned for this fall, and an agricultural phase is slated for November and CRESTON December.

Moore expressed his gratitude for the cooperation among agencies. “Many thanks to CanyonLister Fire Department, Canada Border Services Agency and US Customs and Border Protection for the cooperation. Everyone working together provided great opportunity to know that there is an ability to provide great protection to these buildings.” Guthrie echoed Moore’s sentiments, saying that winds enabled the Parker Ridge fire to jump the Kootenay River in two spots. “I cannot stress enough, what an outstanding job the U.S. firefighters did under very adverse conditions. Without their brave effort, I have no doubt in my mind that things would have turned out much differently,” he said. “We also need to recognize what a fabulous job US Homeland Security and Canadian border services did in getting civilians and firefighters across the border in a safe manner and without delay.” He also credited Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director Tanya Wall and Moore and his crew for their efforts. Guthrie was less generous in his comments about residents who called his firefighters at their homes during the night, demanding information and becoming abusive when they didn’t get the answers they wanted. Unfounded rumours about evacuation orders to Lister and West Creston residents also abounded on Friday night. He said an advisory or alert was close to being issued, but
that no evacuations were ordered. Evacuations were ordered on the Porthill side as far south as Copeland Road. Smoke filling the Creston Valley has also been supplemented by the more recent Mount Midgely wildfire, which threat-

Battling the fire were 40 firefighters, four helicopters and a fleet of heavy equipment. Three of the helicopters were used to bucket water in an attempt to control the fire’s spread. Tonight (Aug. 20) the Canyon-Lister Fire Department
is hosting a meet and greet for the public at the fire hall from 7-8:30 p.m. “Come down and meet the guys and check out our firefighting equipment,” Guthrie said. “Hotdogs and refreshments will be served.”
