Cranbrook Airshow Preview
BARRY COULTER The Canadian Rockies International Airshow Society on Monday gave a sneak peak at some of the aircraft delights that will be on display in just under one year’s time. On August 17, media representatives from at home and abroad and aircraft and airport fans were on hand at the Canadian Rockies International Airport to see some of the exciting names and aircraft in Canadian aviation, some of whom will be returning for the Cranbrook airshow August 5 and 6, 2016. “It’s looking quite good,” said Daryl Garton, Society Chair. “We’ve got a lot of the performers that are here today who are also going to be here for 2016, and things are wrapping up. The City of Cranbrook’s been backing us up on this so we’re doing quite well. We’ve got a little bit of buzz going on here — these guys are here for us, for the media. A lot of us have volunteered their own time to come out here and promote the show for 2016 — and at this point we are going to make it happen.” Aviators were roaring over Cranbrook and Kimberley and onto the airport tarmac Sunday afternoon, evening and all through Monday. And media types seeking
an adrenaline hit were offered rides in some of the notable aircraft on hand — such as Saskatchewan’s Stefan Trischuk’s Pitts X2C biplane, or Geoff Latter’s fully restored 1958 Nanchang, a Chinese prop-driven fighter/trainer. (Full disclosure: This reporter was found to be to heavy for flights in the Nanchang or biplane, confirming his status as “land animal.”) Geoff Latter — an airline pilot by trade and airshow performer and demonstration pilot by vocation, has one of five authentic Nanchang’s in Canada, and the only one that’s fully restored. Only 3,186 were ever made, he said, as a trainer and ground attack fighter. “But the jet age came along, and made it obsolete.” However, the Chinese made enough parts for 30,000 aircraft — so parts are readily available. The Nanchang’s nine-cylinder radial engine offers 285 horsepower, a top speed of 400 km/ph. Adrenalinebuzzed passengers emerged buzzed from Trischuk’s and Latter’s maneuvers — loops and rolls and other Gforce experiences. Rocket, came soaring into the airport in tandem at noon, able to take more passengers aloft. Mathieson flies the world’s most advanced aerobatic aircraft — the MX2. The aircraft is designed for plus or minus 16Gs, and has an incredible roll rate of 500 degrees per second and is powered by a 380 HP motor giving the aircraft a top speed of almost 500 km/ph. Mathieson, Trischuk and Latter will be on hand again, for the 2016 show. In the early afternoon, Drew Watson and David Watson flew in from the Chilliwack Airshow in two Harvard Trainers, World War II-era planes used by the Allied forces. Certainly Monday’s most prominent guest was Canadian Air Force Captain Denis
been in the military for nine years, and flying the CF-18 Hornet for five. He’s based out of 425 Squadron in Bagotville, Quebec, but is between two bases during his summer of demonstration. At the end of the summer he is transferring to 410 Squadron in Cold Lake, Alberta, to take on instructor duties. But in the meantime, he is touring the Hornet around the continent. “I’m pretty much all over the country, and the United States — all over North America. One airshow in a different location every weekend. “It’s an exciting summer. I’ve got two great teams that follow me — one in the east, one in the west, because they’re driving, going from airshow to airshow, showing Ca-

same camouflage scheme, the fake guns painted on the wings, and the same markings as 401 Squadron, which was an all-Canadian squadron fighting alongside the RAF. was scheduled to fly back to his home base in Bagotville. “It’s exactly 3,222 kilometres. I don’t have that range with the CF-18, especially as it’s configured for the airshows. It has to be very aerodynamic and lightweight, so it can’t carry any external fuel tanks (the Hornet usually carries three — one under each wing and one under the fuselage). Because I don’t carry external tanks my range is quite limited — I can do maybe 1,500 km. But today I’m lucky. I have airto-air refuelling from 435 Squadron (Winnipeg) with the Hercules tanker. They’ll take off and go slightly west to meet me, over Dauphin, Manitoba. It’s going to take me about an hour and 15 minutes to meet them. I’ll go down to the same altitude, slow down. They’ll trail a
ket at the end. I have an air-to-air refuelling probe, I hit a switch, that little probe comes out, I need to maneuver the aircraft to plug one into the other.” The flight to Bagotville was to take roughly four hours, including the refuelling slow-down. Capt. Beaulieu took off at 10:25 a.m. with the thunder of jet engines, a wing wag for the folks on the tarmac, and a farewell blast over Cranbrook, before heading east. All and all, the day at the airport was a great appetizer for the Canadian Rockies International Airshow, set for Aug. 5 and 6, 2016. For more information, check out Canadian Rockies International Airshow on Facebook and if you are interested in volunteering for next year’s airshow, please email Lisa Singbeil at volunteer@criairshow.ca

Changes to outdoor water usage in Cranbrook SUBMITTED The number of days per week that you are able to water your lawns and gardens in Cranbrook will be reduced from 3 days per week down to two starting on Wednesday August 19. Even numbered properties can water on Thursdays and Sundays while odd numbered properties can water on Tuesdays and Saturdays. No one waters on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays until further notice. On your permitted days watering can occur from 4:00am to 11:00am and from 7:00pm to 11:00pm. This covers all outdoor water use including: washing of vehicles, RV’s, campers, boats, windows and the filling of kids’ pools or hot tubs. “This is a situation we have been monitoring closely for some time and we’ve done our best to make sure the public is aware that these new restric-
tions would be coming if needed,” says Chris Zettel, Corporate Communications Officer for the City of Cranbrook. “They are needed now.” The water level in Phillips Reservoir, where the City draws its water, continues to drop and not enough rainfall has been received in the watershed this summer to replenish the water being taken out. The move reducing the number of watering days is laid out in the City’s Outdoor Water Management Policy 60-20. Although the policy indicates that reservoir levels must reach 75 percent of capacity before phase 2 restrictions take effect, a number of other significant external factors have prompted the additional restrictions to happen earlier. “Two weeks ago, the Province raised the drought level in the Kootenays, including the East Kootenay, to level 3, which calls for
voluntary water use reductions by up to 20 percent,” Zettel notes, adding “the Province also expects significant water supply shortages for the area through the rest of 2015.” “Current creek and river levels, including Joseph and Gold Creeks, are what we normally see at the end of September, not August. Fishing in rivers and streams in the southeast have been closed to all anglers by order of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) effective just this past weekend due to the decreased water levels and rising water temperatures.” For more information about the changes in watering days, water conservation and what you can do to conserve, visit our website at www.cranbrook.ca and click on ‘Water Conservation’ under the City of Cranbrook Links on the homepage.

Hugs: SUPER HUGS - To Kara at Western Financial Group, for handling some very important documents for me. I was visiting from Calgary, it was Friday afternoon and neither the local library, bank or office supply business (shocking) were able to scan documents onto a USB, to send over the internet. Kara kindly scanned them for me and I was able to send them out before closing time. It is nice to know people will go out of their way to help someone in distress. (I was surprised the local library did not have a scanner with their photocopier!!). Hugs: Thanks to Susan @ CIBC, you are awesome! Hugs: Many hugs to a young man in his 30’s in a black truck who stopped to help 3 young boys on 11th Ave S, when the youngest boy around 4 or 5 years old fell and hurt himself. He screamed and the other boys looked around and came back to him. The man in the truck came across the street to help him, talked with him then picked up his bike to carry it and walked with the boy and the other boys up the steep hill. He then cut down the hill to the apartments below, came back up and walked down to his truck and left. I thought, what a wonderful act of kindness this man had. It really made my day Hugs: To Lindsay at the Credit Union, you are
awesome! Hugs: Great huge hugs to Wendy our cleaning lady at Mount Baker RV Park. She does an awesome job of cleaning our washrooms every day. Our visitors in the Park are extremely thankful for the cleanest washrooms they have ever seen. Thanks from the staff and all the customers at Mount Baker RV Park. You do a terrific job and we appreciate it so much! Slugs: To the semi driver that swerved into my lane going around the bend on the strip and when I finally got past without being hit saw him talking on his cell phone. Couldn’t get company name as I was concentrating on driving (like you should have been). Was a purple semi tractor pulling a flat deck trailer with the black sheeting walls and happened around 11:00 in the morning on Tuesday. If you are reading this you know who you are. Next time if there is one, I will report you to your company and the police. Hugs: To the fellow in Kimberley that protected his family and property by being forced to kill the bear in his home. It is horrid that you are getting negative feedback from people. In my mind you had no other choice. Even if your family had left the home he would have destroyed it and then try to get insurance to pay for it cause I am sure since it was a creature of nature, insurance would call it

an “act of God” and not covered the damage. You did the right thing. I think that maybe the posting of the picture is what threw people over the edge as society today has way too many sensitivites. Slugs: Gas in Idaho this week went down 11 cents a gallon, Cranbrook gas went up 12 cents a liter. Local Dealers & gas companies are ripping us off Hugs: To the unknown witness who reported the accident at Victoria Ave and Hwy 3 on April 27. Because of you the innocent driver was found not at fault. Thank you Slugs: To the person who snapped off all of our Sunflower plants. We had 60 stalks standing up in our flower bed and almost all of them in full bloom. Completely fenced with wire, we were enjoying them so much. We planted these to attract the bees and butterflies. How could you do such a thing? Folks keep your eyes open for thieves in Hidden Valley. Hugs: To the gentleman who followed me across town last Monday morning to tell me I had lost a hubcap... and double hugs to him for going all the way back across town, getting it and leaving it on my truck. I found it when I came out of work two hours later! Kindness like that is what the world needs more of!!! THANK YOU!

10 Neat Things... Rebloomers
1. Off with their Heads. Dead-heading is a specific kind of pruning that works well for many annuals and even some perennials and shrubs. When you remove flowers that have finished their show, you accomplish two things. First, you are telling the plant that it needs to keep blooming if it ever wants to re-seed itself. You also stop the plant from wasting energy on forming seeds, leaving it for more growth and blooms! 2. Return of the Lilac. Lilacs are known for their early season display, but the ‘Bloomerang’ lilac blooms in the spring, goes through a rest period in the heat of summer and fragrant flowers return mid-season and continue right up until frost, turning heads and noses alike. Their blooms are abundant, making this plant ideal for cut flowers. 3. Great Balls of Endless Flower. Many hydrangeas bloom once and are done for the season. But the hydrangea ‘Endless Summer’ bears blossoms on new growth, so you can enjoy the flowers several times each summer. For gardeners in cold climates where winter damage prevents other hydrangeas from flowering, 'Endless Summer' ensures a spectacular show. 4. Vertical Flower Show. Whether your clematis will flower again and again throughout the season depends on the type of plant. Clematis are grouped into three types: Type A that flowers only on growth from last year, Type B that flower on last year’s and the current year’s growth and Type C that bloom only on the current year’s growth. Clematis of Type B and C should rebloom with a bit of care. 5. Let the Sunshine in! Coreopsis, also known as tickseed, produces scores of bright flowers in the summer months. The colour of the blooms range from sunny yellow to golden-yellow, pink or bicolor flowers, depending on the variety. Plucking off spent blooms will prevent seed from forming and keep the plant blooming profusely. 6. Brighten Your Days! The white blooms of shasta daisies can brighten any perennial garden with their cheery display. As soon as you see their flowers begin to fade, wither, or turn brown, either cut the spent blooms with a sharp knife or use pruning shears. This will stimulate new growth and result in additional flowers. 7. Black Eyes not an Accident. They are the sunny faces of midsummer across Canada; rudbeckia, also known as ‘Black-Eyed Susan’ was the Perennial Plant Association's plant of the year in 1999. They have a daisy-like appearance and are great additions to any cut flower arrangement. Another positive side-effect of cutting is that it also promotes reblooming. 8. Exotic Touch for your Garden. The blooms of daylilies resemble the luxurious beauty of true lilies and there are many re-blooming varieties to grace your garden, including ‘Stella d'Oro’ and ‘Janice Brown’. In addition to removing spent blooms and damaged leaves to encourage new buds forming, daylilies appreciate a 2-inch layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture and to prevent weeds from growing and compete with the daylilies for moisture and soil nutrients. 9. Not only Your Cats will Love it. Nepeta, commonly known as catmint, is a popular ornamental plant because it is water conserving, deer are not particularly fond of it and it has a long bloom period from late spring to autumn. Give the plant a haircut after its initial flush of flowers in late spring to keep it compact and initiate another cycle of bloom. 10. Towers of Flowers. Salvia stuns in borders with columns of blooms in shades of purple and blue, sometimes even white and pink and this is a plant that is heat and drought tolerant as well. This plant will rebloom from late spring through the fall season., for best success, cut back old bloom stems immediately.

der turbo-diesel (TDI) that’s rated at horsepower and 236 1-888-867-0964 pound-feet Cranbrook Kia 150cranbrookkia.com 1011-Victoria Avenue of torque. That’s 10 more ponies than the outgoing TDI, although the torque number remains unchanged. Along with superior twisting force, the TDI scores big in fuel frugality with a rating of 7.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.4 on the highway. The 1.8 gas engine turns in a respectable rating of 9.6/6.7. Note that all numbers are with the engines hooked to six-speed automatic transmissions; the 1.8’s five-speed manual and the 2.0’s six-speed gearbox will each net you slightly better fuel economy on the highway cycle. With a price of $24,100, the base Sportwagon Trendline arrives with the expected air conditioning and power-operated items plus a 15-centimetre touch-screen display with smart-phone-style pinch and zoom, leather-like seat coverings and 15-inch alloy wheels. The Comfortline adds 16-inch wheels, fog lights and leatherette seat covers, while the Highjline increases the content level with climate control, power sunrof, leather-covered sport seats, 12-way power driver’s seat and 17-inch wheels Note that the $2,500 turbo-diesel option can be substituted for the gasfive-cylinder that also produced oline engine on all three trims. The Sportwagon is also available 170 horsepower, but fell short in the torque department with 177 pound- with a navigation system plus pro-active safety features that help mitigate feet. Optional is a 2.0-litre four-cylin- front-end collisions and help prevent backing over and into things. 2015 VW Golf Sportwagon Hey, where did all the station wagons go? They’ve mostly been replaced by sport utility vehicles and so-called crossovers (tall wagons). You can still find traditional station wagons at BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru and Volvo dealers. And, of course wherever Volkswagens are found, which is where you’ll discover the new Golf Sportwagon. In Europe and elsewhere, wagons remain a popular niche. Especially in Germany, automakers headquartered there are eager to send their upscale models our way. They’re picked up by folks who prefer their style and spaciousness, and the fact that they’re set low to the ground, just like their sedan counterparts. The 2015 Golf hatchback-based Sportwagon picks up where the previous Golf Wagon left off. That means it’s built on Volkswagen’s adjustable Modular Transverse Matrix (MBQ) platform that’s integral to a number of current and future Volkswagen and Audi vehicles. Compared to the previous Golf Wagon, the latest iteration is slightly longer and wider overall and there’s about five more centimetres between the front and
rear wheels. Passenger volume has accordingly increased, but cargo room is down slightly, mainly due to a roofline that is a touch lower for improved aerodynamics and fuel economy. Even though the vehicle is bigger, VW managed to prune about 65 kilograms from the 2014 Wagon’s base weight. From a design perspective, the Sportwagon shares the hatchback’s neatly creased side panels and bulging fender openings necessitated by a wider stance. VW’s designers have also done a great job in creating a lifgate that ties in beautifully with the rest of the vehicle. In this instance, Volkswagen has succeeded in putting the “sport” in Sportwagon. The interior from the rear-seats forward also shares the Golf’s looks, including a sophisticated dashboard and control panel that wouldn’t look out of place in one of VW’s premium Audi products. The 60:40 split-folding rear seat, which can be lowered from the back via a set of levers, doesn’t sit completely flat, but the low load floor makes filling the hold with gear that much easier. The Golf-based powertrain selection is in line with the car’s lineage.
BANKRUPTCY? REPOSSESSION? BAD CREDIT? HIGH INTEREST?
The starting point is a turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder that generates 170 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. It replaces the previous Golf Wagon’s non-turbo 2.5-litre
Safety Tip:
Since it’s a Golf, the dash matches the other Golf models as well as the Jetta’s (sedan). Simple, elegant and functional. The base 1.8-litre turbo engine comes with a five-speed manual transmission while the diesel has a sixspeed manual. In both cases a six-speed automatic is optional.

Margaret was pre-deceased by her son Rickie (1965), her husband Vince (1979), her daughter Beth (2004), and by her siblings Lydia Offin, Robert Waldie and Amy Riddell. She will be greatly missed by several nieces and nephews and other extended family, by her friend Nick, and by many long-time friends in Cranbrook, Elko, Kimberley and the East Kootenay region.
