Mission to become a city? Council decides to poll businesses to see if district classification should be changed Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

Should Mission brand itself as a city? The idea of changing the District of Mission’s classification was briefly debated in January, but quickly set aside. Now, the idea has resurfaced. On Monday, district staff presented a report to council rec-

ommending moving forward with the reclassification, noting the city moniker could increase the ability to attract and retain business – more effectively than the district classification – and should reduce confusion between the District of Mission and the Fraser Valley Regional District. Mayor Randy Hawes suggested staff work with the Mission

Chamber of Commerce to poll the business community to see if they feel being a city would be an attractant. “Does it seem to the outside world when you say District of Mission that we’re sort of, maybe, a backwoods-type of community as opposed to a progressive city?” asked Hawes Coun. Jim Hinds pointed out

that Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge are all former districts that decided to become cities. “All of them have decided that it makes more sense and people from the outside look at a city as a more progressive place than a district, which is a rural area,” he said. “To me, looking at the City of

Mission, it says we’ve finally grown up,” added Hinds. While not opposed to the idea, Coun. Pam Alexis asked staff to check with the chamber on how its rebranding initiative is progressing. The chamber, along with community futures, has been trying to develop a new brand – possibly

Thousands flock to festival MissionFest organizers want event to keep growing Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

An estimated crowd of 5,000 people came out to celebrate the fifth annual MissionFest celebration. Downtown Mission was bursting with people on hand to check out free games, activities and information booths. This year’s version of the family-friendly event is being called the biggest success in the event’s history. “It was exciting. The weather was good. We had good participants, thousands of people, it was the least stressful one we’ve ever had,” said Rhett Nicholson, local businessman, councillor and one of the event coordinators. The event featured free games and activities for kids, displays by local groups and businesses and lots of family-fun. The Reptile Guy held his official opening as

place, as well as live stage shows and more. “The kids have a blast. It’s really one of the only events where

you get so much for free,” said Nicholson. He said now that the event is “established” in Mission, sponsors will hopefully get on board earlier, knowing that thousands of people come each year. “We want to grow the event. We are looking at doing a logger sport event. That would be three-day event.” Nicholson explained if a logging show was eventually added, it wouldn’t force the Lougheed Highway to be closed for three days, rather it would be held at an alternate location in conjunction with MissionFest. “On the day of the festival we could bring it downtown and incorporate the logging history of Mission,” he said. That could include old saws and other antiques as part of a display. “Every year we are going to try and bring something new.”

Having a

FVRD director to run for NDP

The NDP have announced their candidate for the newly created Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding. Dennis Adamson, the director for Electoral Area B in the Fraser Valley Regional District, won a contested nomination Sunday, according to the NDP’s Tim Chu. Adamson beat out Kevin Whitney, the chief of the T’it’q’et First Nation near Lillooet, for the nomination. Chu said around 150 votes were cast, but did not provide a breakdown of those votes. With Adamson now nominated, all four parties have now chosen candidates for the MissionMatsqui-Fraser Canyon riding, which includes parts of Abbotsford north of Bateman and Maclure roads, along with Mission, Agassiz and several Fraser Valley communities up to Lillooet in the north. Adamson will face Jati Sidhu of the Liberals, Arthur Green of the Green Party, Brad Vis of the Conservative Party and independent Wyatt Scott.

City vs. district chase new signage, stationery items and other materials. After the meeting, Hawes said the proposed designation change was merely a matter of perception to potential investors or new residents. He said there would be no impact on taxation or how the district is run. To be classified as a city in B.C., a population of more than 5,000 people is needed.

OPINION

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

What’s in a name?

Perception seems to be an important issue for the District of Mission. On Monday, council once again debated the merits of changing its classification from district to city. The idea was briefly discussed back in January, but this time it appears the notion has more political push behind it. Council has directed staff to poll local businesses to see what they think of the idea. They should approve. Despite the fact that becoming a city, rather than a district, has no real impact on citizens or government – other than approximately $40,000 in expenses to change signage, stationary and other district logos – it would affect business opportunities outside of the

Should Mission become a city rather than a district?

Fraser Valley area. Just being known as a district gives Mission a small town feel to those unfamiliar with the area. If you are talking to investors in Toronto or outside of Canada, who are looking for new business opportunities, they will surely be more interested in pursuing a city location, rather than a district. While changing the classification doesn’t alter the great benefits Mission has to offer, it does change the perception outsiders may have. Any advantage in marketing Mission should be explored if we want to see the community grow and prosper. The City of Mission has a nice ring to it.

Picking on cats

D

Do Not Enter, No Cats Allowed: The above signs should be posted at all entrances to the Cedar Acres Trailer Park and if cats in the area could read they would most likely abide by the rules. Our park is in the Hatzic Prairie area in the northeast outskirts of Mission and the majority of residents have been living in the park between 20 and 35 years without any pet concerns. The agent for the landlords hand-delivered a letter on August 15, 2015 along with some new rules for every resident of this idyllic park. First and foremost all cats must be tethered when outside in the yard or are to remain inside their respective homes. According to the owners, complaints have been received due to the activities of some uncontrolled cats but so far, from speaking with neighbours, none of them have complained that I know of. We have also been informed the landlords are “utilizing a specialist to rid the park of the problem.” No tenants, to my knowledge, have been informed as to what a specialist is or exactly what rid the park of the problem means. Will the cats be treated with respect and care? Cats are roamers and quite a few of them come from neighbours to find someone who will give them food and water but they do not stay long once they have filled their little bellies. This reason for this letter is to notify neighbours who live on Durieu Road, Seux Road and residents of the Sons of Norway Park who surround Cedar Acres Trailer Park. These families need to be told their cats may be picked up by the specialist our landlords will be hiring. Terri Gust Mission

Mission council has agreed to spend $6,000 on researching how best to control knotweed on private properties. The municipality had set aside $20,000 for invasive plant control this year. Private contractor Spectrum Resource Group dealt with 20 hogweed sites and 123 knotweed sites, all on public property. This was done in late June. Knotweed can spread easily and previous routine roadside maintenance is suspected as one of the causes. Most municipalities in the Lower Mainland have changed their maintenance practices so that knotweed is not trimmed, but instead eradicated. Council approved spending $6,000 left over from the invasive plant control budget to do a research project on eradicating knotweed from priority private properties.

More than 40 motorcyclists and seven cars came to Fraser River Heritage Park on Sunday to help raise money for the Mission Hospice Society. The fourth annual Ride For Hospice attracted more participants than ever before as riders collected pledges and participated in a two-hour ride across the valley into Agassiz and Chilliwack before returning to Mission. “We did have an increase in participants this year, which is promising because we want to grow this into a huge event,” explained Angel Elias, executive director of the society. nothing but positive feedback from participants and sponsors. “I spoke to every single rider and they all said they really enjoyed themselves and will definitely be back next year, hopefully with a bunch of friends.” Local sponsors supplied prizes for participants to win and the Elks Club provided lunch for all participants. All of the proceeds raised by the event goes to support the Mission Hospice Society’s children’s program. “We send 15 kids to the Zajac Ranch, with no cost to the family, and we have to be able to sustain that. This is one of the events that really helps.” While pleased with the event’s success, organizers are always trying to modify the ride in hopes of attracting more participants. This year, there was a poker run aspect added as riders collected cards at various spots along the way. Whoever created the best hand won a prize. Elias said she is already planning for next year’s event and more changes are likely. “The end goal is to have 100 bikes and 100 hot rod cars and make it into a show and shine as well. That way the public can come out and enjoy the event too,” said Elias. A final total on what was raised has yet to be determined as Elias said they are “still crunching numbers.”

It came as no surprise to Mission’s Alexia Seal when she heard that Wrestling Canada named her to the Cadet World Championship squad to compete in the 43-kilogram division. Seal and the rest of the national team head to Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina in less than a week for the competition which runs Aug. 27-30. “I’m pretty much used to the travelling,” Seal told The Record. “I’m just really excited and looking forward to it.” The Mission wrestler continues to train out of Coast Wrestling in Burnaby with coach Frank Mensah, who is also one of three coaches on the Wrestling Canada Cadet World Team. Mensah said preparation for the world championships has been more specialized as of late. “We have been working with Alexia, targeting spec i f i c areas that we identified as needing w o r k ,” Mensah SEAL s a i d , for instance, defending double-leg takedowns, which Seal had trouble with against her finals opponent in Romania earlier this year. Seal is currently on a specialized highprotein, low-carb diet. This is not so much to manage weight but to sharpen her body and mind. “Instead of pizza, it’s grilled chicken. A small bowl of pasta instead of a large one,” explained Mensah. “For a little more muscle.” The Mission Secondary student most recently secured gold in the Ontario Cup. Modestly, she claimed the feat was not too glamorous. “There were just four competitors,” she said, “They were familiar opponents I wrestled before in other competitions.” Seal also competed in the Cadet PanAmerican Wrestling Championships in

Mexico, July 3-5, where she landed the bronze out of a class of seven wrestlers from around North and South America. At this year’s national championships

Cadet becomes a glider pilot

Sergeant Ryan Greenwood from 521 Aurora Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron (RCACS) in Mission grew as a cadet and as a pilot this summer. Greenwood had the opportunity to attend the Glider Pilot Scholarship (GPS) course at Comox Cadet Flying Training Centre. “I’ve always loved flying and I have finally reached my goal to becoming a glider pilot. I cannot wait to fly cadets from my home squadron during the spring and fall seasons,” said Greenwood. Captain Alysse Mansueto, flight commander for the Glider Pilot Scholarship Course, said 45 cadets enrolled in the six week training session “The cadets spent over 100 hours studying all aspects of navigation, theory of flight, meteorology, air law, glider handling, and much more. All while learning how to fly a Schweizer 2-33A which is an intermediate training glider,” said Mansueto. More than 3,400 sea, army and air cadets are participating in summer training activities across B.C. For more visit www.cadets.ca.

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? good solution for most people.

A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally

This improvement in hearing can be achieved for some clients through the new Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technology comes in a miniature casing that can significantly enhance the user’s ability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the person you are speaking to and can also recognize if ambient noise increases in the background. GOD WAS ONCE LIKE US

A central tenet of Christianity is that God became man in the embodied form of Jesus, in order that we might know how to live a godly life. Christians don’t expect to become gods, but we do hope to become more godlike by following the example of Jesus. There were a host of heresies in the early Church concerning Christ’s divinity. The Arian heresy claimed that Christ was divine but created, and thus not con substantial (of the same substance) with God the father. Others believed that Christ was divine but not human, arguing that his suffering on the cross, and any other suffering which he underwent, were mere illusions. These issues were largely settled at the first council of Nicaea in 325 AD, which asserted in the Nicene Creed that Christ was “God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father.” But, in what sense was Christ fully human? Christ’s humanity is, ironically, more of a mystery than his divinity. How could God become man? The Gospels are essentially an attempt to answer that question, or at least for God, in the form of a man, to show us how to live a fully human life.

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Philippians 2:5-7

A few years later, rumours of a lost gold mine with nuggets the size of walnuts were circulating in the Lower Mainland, rumours that became associated with Slumach’s name. “We’ve been fascinated by this legend since we were kids” said Antonson. When Toronto’s JV Productions called asking to use the book as part of their planned series, Antonson and co-authors Rick Antonson (brother) and Mary Trainer jumped at the opportunity. The Antonson brothers spent two days last fall at a location north of Pitt Lake taking part in shooting episodes for the series. The series hits screens at 10 p.m. on Wednesday August 26.

Mission author Brain Antonson is looking forward to watching a new television series on the History Channel next week. The legend of Pitt Lake’s Lost Creek Gold Mine will spring to life when the series Curse of the Frozen Gold tells the tales of modern-day gold seekers searching for the legendary missing mine. Antonson is co-author of a bestselling book on the legend, which has chalked up more than 10,000 sales, twice the number required for a best seller in Canada. In Loving Memory of Urbain (Herb) Fillion Where has the time gone? It is hard to believe that ten years has passed since we last spoke, but we will all remember all your funny jokes. Even though we can’t see you with our eyes, I promise you we will not cry. As we gather around the table and everyone is apart, I want you to know that you will always be in our hearts. You will always be in our thoughts.

OBITUARIES

JACOUBSEN Reano Reano Jacoubsen passed away on August 5, 2015. He was predeceased by his wife Francine Jacoubsen (nee West). He has two brothers Lahrie and Russell. Reano will be missed by all those who knew him.

MASON Judith Louisa March 12, 1953 ~ Aug. 14, 2015

It is with great sadness that Judith’s family announces her sudden passing. She was predeceased by her parents Tom and Jeanie. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Stephen Graham; children Bryce (Mandy) and Daryl (Michelle); grandchildren Makayla, Abigail, Avery and Presley; sister Janie as well as extended family and friends. A private family service will be held. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

BURNS BULLER / SCHELLENBERG Reanetta With deep sadness the family announces the unexpected passing of Reanetta Linda Buller (formally Schellenberg, nee Siemens) on August 1, 2015. Reanetta was born May 28, 1928 at Main Centre, Saskatchewan. She married Beno Schellenberg in 1951 and together they farmed and raised a family. In 1979 they moved to Abbotsford where they opened Sweet Things Candy Store in West Oaks Mall. After Beno’s passing in 1986, Reanetta continued with retail sales and enjoyed her time at Peoples Jewelers, MCC, Sole Comfort and other local retail stores. She had a special talent for making someone’s day. Reanetta had a love for serving others and was a frequent volunteer at Haggai Institute in Hawaii, Central Heights Church ministries and Garden Park Towers. Reanetta married Ed Buller in July 1999, on a Maui beach, and they were blessed with many years together. Since Ed’s passing in 2010 Reanetta focused her attention on her family and friends; frequently showering them with her gift of hospitality. Her soups and baking were legendary. Her optimistic spirit and consistent smile; a treasure. Despite facing hard challenges in her life, she chose to live a life sharing the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through her daily actions of service to others. Her family was blessed by her consistent message of “I love you and I pray for you” which ended every conversation. She will be greatly missed. Services for Reanetta were held at Central Heights Church on August 8, 2015. Tributes may be left at www.facebook.com/ebuller2

Dorothy Rose (née Tranter) January 6, 1918 ~ July 1, 2015

Born in Catford (London), England, Dorothy was a bomb girl during the war when she met Hughie. A war bride, she came to Canada to start a new life in Kelfield, Saskatchewan, an English rose transplanted to the Canadian prairie. She was a great mum of five sons. Her family, gardening, square dancing and traveling with Hughie in their RV brought her joy. She took many a niece, nephew and other youth under her wing. A woman of faith, Dorothy had a great sense of humour and a warm smile. Thanks to all who helped Dorothy along the way. She is home at last with Hughie and Don. Memorial Tuesday, September 1st, 1:00 pm at Holy Spirit Anglican Church, 27123 River Rd., Maple Ridge, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s memory are welcome to the Alzheimer Society of B.C. (www.alzheimerbc.org or 1-800-667-3742).

STAGG Heather 1950 ~ 2015 Heather Stagg, after a brave fight with cancer, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2015 with loved ones by her side. Heather was born in Richmond on May 20, 1950 and was raised by her parents Frank and Christine Short. Heather was a loving mother and grandmother, and a devoted friend to those she loved. She served God her whole life and was a constant prayer warrior. In recent years she found her home at Cascade Community Church where she served and was greatly supported by the community of believers there. Heather is survived by her children Chris, Amy and Warren, her sister Joanne, several grandchildren and countless friends. She will be missed every day. A Memorial Service will be held at Cascade Community Church at 35190 DeLair Rd in Abbotsford on Saturday August 22, at 2:30 pm. SYMONS

COWHIG, Peter James aka Uncle Wonderful May 2, 1950 - August 10, 2015

FRAIZER

John Harold

Marie

It is with deep sadness our family announces the passing of Peter Cowhig. Peter is survived by his daughter, Jasmine McNeil; grandchildren, Charley, Ben, and Georgia McNeil; as well as his mother, Jeannette Cowhig; sisters, Mary, Gemma, and Margaret; and brothers, John, Michael, and Paul. He revelled in the role of “Uncle Wonderful” to his many nieces and nephews. Although Peter’s career was in Real Estate, his passion was his family, fishing, film, and stage. He was often found on stage at Surrey Little Theatre and Langley Players, although he discovered his love of acting at Gallery 7 in Abbotsford. Peter grew up in Vancouver, but spent most of his adult years living, working, and playing in the Fraser Valley. He had a deep, enduring appreciation for nature. Not a day went by that he didn’t express his thankfulness, delight, and amazement at the natural beauty of where we live. Rest in peace Peter. Forever your family we’ll be.

Our mother passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends and she died as she lived, with grace, dignity and courage. She was predeceased by her daughter Dawn, grand-daughter Jennifer, her sister Eileen and her brother Jimmy. Mom leaves behind 6 children, 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren (one due in Sept.), 2 sisters, and a brother. She will always be remembered for her sense of humor, adventurous spirit and great big laugh. We would like to thank Dr. Hughes and all the Doctors and staff at Christine Morrison Hospice for their exceptional care of our mother. You went above and beyond the call of duty. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Christine Morrison Hospice in mom’s name. Mom, we will love and miss you forever, love always, your kids.

Jack passed away on August 9, 2015 in Kamloops, BC. Born July 23, 1940 to “Kit” and John Symons, raised in Mission and resided in 100 Mile House since 1969. Many will remember Jack for his love of bowling. Lovingly survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon, brother Larry (Sharon), brothers-in-law Ray, Bob (Gloria) Germain, sister-in-law Anita (John) Edlund, many nieces and nephews. Our sincere appreciation and thanks to the Kamloops Hospice Association for their wonderful care. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 100 Mile House at 12:00 pm on August 22, 2015. Condolences care of: 100milefuneralservice @gmail.com
