The Conservatives don’t seem to be paying the price in Pitt MeadowsMaple Ridge for their late start in the federal election. A nomination meeting Tuesday drew about 1,000 party members, most of whom voted for Mike Murray, making him the candidate to represent Stephen Harper in Oct. 19th’s election. “The turnout was spectacular for a summer evening,” said Murray, who was endorsed by Randy Kamp. The retiring MP also introduced Murray’s speech. Just how many votes Murray drew versus rival Marc Dalton wasn’t revealed. But it was a close race, said Murray, Kamp’s constituency assistant.

While the city struggles with homelessness and the province pitches in, the federal government should also do its bit, says Coun. Bob Masse. But it’s complicated. “It’s such a complex issue. We don’t have a national housing strategy, so that’s part of it,” Masse said.
While early in the campaign, housing or homelessness as a federal election issue isn’t yet top of mind. That will change, says NDP candidate Bob D’Eith. “I think it’s going to be a very important topic coming into the election, especially in Maple Ridge.” The homeless camp on Cliff Avenue is a good example of the problem. “This is our community. These are our people. We have to take care of them and we have to figure out a way to do that.” He understands why people are upset when the federal government walks away from its

responsibility. Although the NDP calls for a national housing strategy, newly named Conservative candidate Mike Murray says the NDP want a national strategy for many things, such as a national daycare program. “But that won’t be our approach.” Instead, the Conservatives want to put money into people’s pockets so they can make the decisions themselves. Both the Liberals and NDP want centralized, Ottawa-based programs. “That is not the direction of the Conserva-
tive party,” Murray said The federal government, he added, is doing its part through the Homelessness Partnering Strategy, which funnels $119 million yearly to community groups across Canada. A key part of the strategy is the Housing First program, which makes provision of housing the priority before a client can receive help for other issues. Metro Vancouver is the “community based entity,” which decides how to spend the money in this region and decides which projects in each city receive funding.

Aero Club celebrating centennial Storied club moved from Vancouver to Pitt airport
tional airport. When the Pitt Meadows airport opened in the summer of 1963, the Aero Club was among the first tenants to arrive there, and has been there since. Aero Club president Tom Heise has been a member for more than 30 years. The club used to offer pilot training, owned its own aircraft, and even ran a restaurant at Vancouver airport. But pilot training is a business, not a hobby, and the function of the club has changed over the years. Today the club will organize Transport Canada safety seminars, offer free flights to children to introduce them to aviation, and host social fly-in and fly-out events. The club also offers scholarship money to air cadets, and shares its clubhouse with other nonprofit groups. It has a membership of about 125. “The function of the club today is still to support and promote aviation,” Heise said. “The future of the club is going to be in our ability to attract young people to the club, and have them take it over.”

itt Meadows civilian pilots will be celebrating a historic anniversary at the end of the month, as the Aero Club of B.C. turns 100. “We’ve got quite an amazing history,” said club president Tom Heise. The oldest registered flying club in the British Commonwealth, it was founded in 1915 by a group of aviation enthusiasts in Vancouver. At that time, aviation was still in its infancy. The first airplane flight in Canada had only taken place in 1909 in Nova Scotia, and Silver Dart went less than a kilometer. A 1913 trial flight, to take newspapers from Montreal to Ottawa, crashed. But progress was rapid, and the First World War, from 1914 to 1918, manufactured aircraft and trained pilots. The club was soon populated with many veterans of the Royal Air Force and Royal Flying Corps, including Donald McClaren, a First World War ace who shot down 54 aircraft. In 1927, the club received a pair of De Havilland moths from the department of national defence, and acquired two fleet biplanes in 1930. In 1929, the city of Vancouver decided to spend $300,000 to build an airport, after a lobby by

port, offering civilian flight training and promoting aviation. The airport was a training centre throughout the Second World War, and the club played a prominent role in the British Commonwealth Air Training Program for pilots.

Municipalities and Lower Mainland Local Government Association meetings is reinstating tax breaks the federal government used to offer to encourage investors to build rental apartments. That program worked
well in 1970s and 80s, he said. But just providing houses under the Housing First model without the myriad of support services isn’t enough, and Masse cites that despite building new housing in San Francisco or Vancouver, there’s been no change in the number of homeless. Liberal candidate Dan Ruimy didn’t want to comment on the issue. “I don’t know if I want to go there yet.� For D’Eith, Housing First doesn’t work. “Because it ignores the transition. It ignores the support that people need transitioning from the street.� That program was used to justify cutting $600,000 in funding to Maple Ridge, and which also saw a reduction in the number of street outreach workers by 1.5 positions. The NDP’s policy of having a national housing strategy would involve the federal government consulting with provinces and the cities. “That’s the one thing [Prime Minister Stephen] Harper doesn’t do, is actually consult-
ing with the province and local government and service providers to provide solutions for the homeless. It has to be a holistic approach,� D’Eith said. “Homelessness doesn’t exist in a vacuum. What’s happened, the federal government has basically downloaded everything. I think that’s why you see the municipality, locally, having to jump in.� When the provincial government closed Riverview and patients were pushed out without support, they ended up on the street,� he added. “We’ve basically, literally, downloaded responsibility. That’s why we find a lot of municipalities having a struggle with issues that are really federal or provincial.� D’Eith said the NDP thinks it’s everyone’s problem. “I think it’s a fundamental philosophical difference between the parties.� He added that there are about 300,000 homeless people across Canada. “So it is a significant issue.�

‘Election is going to be close race’ Candidate from front
“It was encouraging to see that kind of involvement from our community from Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge … in the middle of summer,” said Dalton, who now returns to the B.C. legislature and rejoins the B.C. Liberal party as MLA for Maple RidgeMission. People had to wait a half hour and lined up outside in order to vote for their candidate at Westview secondary. In bid to shore up his
support, Dalton signed up about 800 new Conservative party members. Dalton sat as an independent MLA during his bid for the federal nomination in order to reduce the time required for party duties. With the winner declared, Dalton endorsed Murray as the candidate. Dalton said the competition served as a way of re-connecting with his base of supporters. That could help in the next provincial election.
Election ‘15: Politicians pitch to parents Parents are spending the money and feeling the love like never before from parties contesting the Oct. 19 federal election. Prime Minister Stephen Harper expanded his favoured approach of direct payments, increasing the Conservative government’s child care benefit plan that has been compared to the former Family Allowance. The increase was set up to produce bonus cheques to eligible parents in July, retroactive to the start of the year. Payments went up from $100 to $160 a month for each child under six, with a new $60 payment for those aged seven to 17, payable to families regardless of income or method of child care. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau responded by promising a modified version that would phase out the benefit for high-income families and increase payments for the rest. Building into its calculations a proposed income tax cut for middle and low-income people, the party estimates a two-parent family with an income of $90,0000 and two children would receive $490 a month tax free, compared to the Conservative program of $275 a month after taxes. The Liberals calculate that a single parent with $30,000 income and one child would receive $533 a month, up from $440 under Conservative child benefit and tax rules. NDP leader Thomas Mulcair has offered to retain the Conservative payments and expand Quebec’s subsidized daycare program across the country, with a maximum payment of $15 a day and a longterm goal of creating one million new spaces across the country. Mulcair has said the Quebec program allowed 70,000 mothers to return to the workforce, and the NDP program would be available to private daycare operators as long as they are independent and not “big box” operations. Green Party leader Elizabeth May is also offering a universal federally-funded child care program, including support for workplace daycare through a direct tax credit to employers of $1,500 a year.
“It was a lot of work. It’s a good exercise because it develops those relationships.” Murray said the next step is to find a campaign office. He has a campaign team that’s ready to go. He said support for Conservatives here hasn’t been affected by the trial of former party senator Mike Duffy. The number of people who showed up, proved that. “There’s no dampening of enthusiasm whatsoever,” Murray added.
“We feel confident about the message, still. The campaign theme is a safer Canada and a stronger economy. We just want to lay that before the people.” NDP candidate Bob D’Eith said he’s looking forward to the campaign. “I think it’s going to be a close race. We have to work hard.” He also said it remains a two-way race between the Conservatives and NDP in the riding and has been that way for 50
years. New residents and the loss of Mission as part of the riding makes it difficult to compare previous results when the riding was known at Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission. In the May 2011 election, Kamp took 28,803 votes versus 18,835 for the NDP. Local business owner Dan Ruimy was named the Liberal candidate by acclamation the previous week. Green houses Imagine if the house next door to you was growing mushrooms or potatoes or some other kind of agricultural crop in the basement. Imagine that there were times when you could smell the odor of fertilizer wafting over the fence. If you lived in a residential neighbourhood, you might be unhappy about that. You might complain that a house should not be used as a commercial greenhouse. And if you were told the person has a legal right to do what they were doing, running a legal growop, and that little can be done about it. Because the grower has a federal licence from Health Canada, the best one can hope for is to get better filtering of the fumes and a safety inspection to make sure the wiring doesn’t pose a hazard. This isn’t a question of pro-pot or anti-pot, it’s about the federal government permitting the growing of a particular plant in residential areas without giving a lot of thought to the potential consequences. It wouldn’t matter if the crop in question was kale, green beans or corn, the problem is cultivation is being carried out in locations that are not appropriate. According to one estimate, when the federal government first started licensing legal medicinal marijuana growing, it issued about 300 licences across the entire country. Now, a few years down the road, they are seemingly in every municipality. Many have hundreds of plants. Their locations tend to be a secret until there is a fire or a grow-rip by criminals. Under new federal rules that were supposed to take effect last year, their number was to shrink to a handful of large-scale bulk growing operations that would be banned from residential neighbourhoods. Municipalities across the country prepared for the switch by ordering bans on small grow-ops in residential areas. But all of that is on hold, because the small legal growers objected to being rendered collectively illegal, and managed to get a temporary court injunction. That leaves people who think houses ought be used for housing in limbo. – Black Press

Maple Ridge gets in transition C hris Bettles, 25, was is in Maple Ridge recently on a five-stop North American tour to spread awareness of the Transition Initiative, a planned movement to effect social-economic change that started in a small English town in Along the Fraser 2004. The Transition Move- Jack Emberly ment numbers over 400 independent affiliates world-wide, including the Golden Ears Transition, founded by Gerry Pinel. GETI, with 18 member groups, supports any community activity aimed at reducing dependence on oil, improving the quality of life, sustainability, and combating climate change. Once a month, members meet to review activities and plan events like GETIfest, held in September. Bettles and co-producer Zoe Moyden – active in transition in England – came to promote initiatives in B.C., Washington, Oregon, and California before returning home in August. Interviews with key individuals, and talks at round table meetings will be posted online next January in six 15-minute documentaries linked under the title The Secret of Change. and Moyden saved. “We wanted to learn how the movement was progressing over here,” says Bettles, “to hear your stories, what’s going well for you, what it’s done for your community, your successes, setbacks, how it’s evolved. The videos are one way to move awareness forward, to reach out to as many people as possible and broaden the movement.” Any tape not included, explains Moyden, “interviews, conversations and unused parts of the CEED meeting, will be archived and available without cost to local groups for historical reference, lessons, workshops. One of the key principles of transition is a commitment to social inclusiveness – the idea that everyone in society should be encouraged to develop and contribute their unique skills. It’s an idea embraced by the CEED Centre and once by public education in B.C., until government decided not to fund it. In transition, inclusiveness has resurfaced. “It’s better to reintegrate some people back into the community,” says Pinel, “than to throw them out to the wolves.” Bettles, who was impressed with Village Vancouver’s focus on housing the homeless, agrees. “Transition’s not a club, but a set of tools that can be used by everyone.” In attendance at today’s typical Wednesday round table meeting – open to anyone at the CEED Centre are its manager, a local councilor, an artist in residence, three community

volunteers, and Peter Tam, here to announce his candidacy for the Green Party. Over the next two hours we’ll debate the widening gap between justice and the law, the lack of public empathy for the homeless on Cliff Avenue, and private versus public ownership of water in a time of unprecedented drought. This is exactly what the film-makers are looking for – people from the ground up, debating community and global problems, brainstorming solutions to the rising cost of making and transporting goods, and putting minds and energy into efforts to create a new system that makes the old one obsolete. At one point, Bettles is asked if the transition movement offers hope to Greece, as it debates whether to remain in the European Union. “In time, you realize you need others. But, Cuba became one of the most self-reliant countries in the world when it was isolated by the U.S. Greece? Transition will soften that blow. It can be a huge benefit. You have to look at the long term.” GETIfest this year takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 19 in Memorial Peace Park. “It’s a great idea to promote the aims of transition that I haven’t seen anywhere else,” says Bettles. “It’s about asking people what this community is really about.” Jack Emberly is a retired teacher, local author and environmentalist.

As a resident of this street for 15 years, I can also speak for the close knit community of neighbours ... It is frustrating that a lot of the media reporting seems to only on the rights and fear of the campers. We, the true residents of Cliff Ave., have endured many incredibly disturbing days and nights since the camp evolved. From the dangerous altercations between the camp residents fighting and yelling profanity at all hours of the night, we have lived in fear for months and feel that our mental health, due to this environment, has completely deteriorated. However, it seems that our rights and feelings don’t matter. We watch stolen items being trekked up our street and constantly stashed in bushes and tents out front of our houses. Numerous drug overdoses and many dollars spent in call outs from medical and police resources. Ambulances and yelling waking us up and our young children in the middle of the night. Council has not checked in on us or asked how we are dealing with living in this environment and, yes, the residents feel abandoned in all of this. The tenters have declared a peaceful protest? How is it that they can come and go and still be protesting? And I’m sorry, but I have to say the last comment in today’s article says the Salvation Army Caring Place is “here to help anybody in the community in need - anybody at all.” That, in my opinion, is not accurate. We were told by the Caring Place that the campers on Cliff initially were there because they were not welcome at the shelter due to their lack of consideration in following the shelter’s rules or because they were demonstrating violent behaviour and drug use. Why is OK for them to act like that on a residential street with small children? We invite anyone to pull up a chair on Cliff in the evenings and watch. There is a huge criminal element here amongst the ‘tent residents’ and we, as true residents, are really tired of hearing the camp people are “scared.”Yet the residents and children are expected to suck it up and deal with it when we have tenters who have been intimidating us since this whole things started. We’ve seen bows, bats, pipes, golf clubs and spiked balls on chains attached to clubs. Give me a break. Such a double standard it turns my stomach. That’s why we did a peaceful rally and had a ton of support ... We matter too.

addicts. By doing nothing, we aren’t helping them or society. It isn’t right that people should have to hunt all over the place for used needles, every time they want to go to a park. Not every needle will be found.

The Salvation Army Caring Place is collecting donations for back-toschool supplies for over 250 school-aged children in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The program runs until Sept. 8 and is a critical service for individuals and families in-need in our communities, given the costs associated with a new school year, said Amelia Norrie, public relations coordinator for the Salvation Army Caring Place. In the past, the Salvation Army has prepared and distributed more than 250 backpacks a year to children and anticipates that the demand this year will be no different. that is where the Salvation Army has been lending a hand for several years.” To kick things up a notch for 2015, the Salvation Army will be moving its van in to Valley Fair Mall until Saturday, Aug. 22 to fill it with donations of school supplies for the program. Shoppers can grab a list for any age group, and items can then be purchased at Staples or London Drugs and re-
turned to fill the van. A theft of an elderly couple’s luggage from their car on Wednesday near the Royal Canadian Legion in Maple Ridge won’t stop the Salmon Arm residents from attending their son’s wedding. An elderly couple en route to their son’s wedding in North Vancouver made a pit stop in Maple Ridge to meet their daughter. The couple stopped at the Legion in Maple Ridge before visiting their daughter’s home. When they came out to their
car, they found their luggage had been stolen. Jessie Stretch, who is one of the organizers of the Facebook group Maple Ridge Tax Payers Against Tent City, heard about the theft through social media and rallied members of the group to help go looking for the stolen items. He said when they came up empty handed, they decided to fundraise to help replace the couple’s items. The group raised $1,435 and presented it to the couple that night. “Our group has banded together and we are collecting donations to give to these poor folks so that their terrible experience in Maple Ridge can be put

Stretch said the husband is a Second World War veteran and understands that people of that generation have a harder time accepting a helping hand. “They were so upset they were going to skip the wedding and just go home,” he said. “But we convinced them to stick it out and go to the wedding. It was an emotional moment. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.” Stretch has also been collecting used needles from public parks the past few months.

Katzie First Nation lost one of its members who never failed to show up and share the Katzie culture with the larger community. Drummer and singer Dean Sam died Aug. 10 at age 50. He was originally from the Tsartlip First Nation on Vancouver Island and came to this area for a soccer tournament, where he met his wife Coleen Pierre. Sam had suffered from chronic lung disease since childhood. “In the last eight months it became much more pronounced,” said chief Susan Miller. In addition to being a reliable singer or dancer anytime ceremonies were involved, Sam also did support work for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district. One of the First Nations traditions is that when you have a gift or a talent for something, you have to share it, so Sam never refused a request, Miller said. “He was a very good teacher.” Sam is also survived by his three children, Joachim Pierre, Mavis Pierre and Francis

Time to consider e-bikes E ven those who don’t care much for pedalling might want to check out the e-bike, which has the potential to revolutionize our transportation system, if we give it the chance it deserves. E-bikes are great for elderly people who may not have the strength and stamina anymore to bike very far. The technology can be used for tricycles for people with balance problems. And an e-bike will enable a couple with different levels of physical fitness to enjoy a fun ride together. Some people just like to take it easy, which is why they use the car for most of their trips. They might discover that the e-bike serves their needs. Those who have to
tackle hills or strong head winds on their commute need no longer worry about arriving at work soaked in sweat and perhaps not being able to take a shower. Hot weather and having to wear a helmet also is less of a nuisance. They range in price from under $1,000 for an entry level e-bike to $3,000 and up for high quality bikes. Batteries will last about 1,000 charges, and will set you back several hundred dollars to replace. About 90 per cent of e-bikes sold globally are sold in China, where some 200 million people ride them. In the Netherlands, one in every five bikes sold is now an e-bike. In Germany it’s one in 10. With a failed transit referendum here, mayors want to look at road pricing as a funding option. This will disadvantage the outlying communities, where drivers on average are more car dependent and face longer commutes. There’s another reason for you to ditch the car and get an e-bike. Ridge Meadows RCMP found a raft of drugs ready for sale after checking a parked and occupied vehicle on Brown Avenue and 227th Street, Tuesday night. Police later found 55 individual baggies of suspected drugs, including what’s suspected to be fentanyl, as well as heroin, crack cocaine, cocaine and cash. A 20-year-old Maple Ridge man was arrested and charges are being pursued, police said on Facebook. “Investigating and prosecuting drug trafficking in our community continues to be a priority,” Ridge Meadows RCMP said. Police said Thursday they are concerned about deadly fentanyl that’s being mixed with other drugs and have issued a warning together with Fraser Health. A dozen people have died in Metro Vancouver in the past month from overdoses.

It’s so heavy, made of solid concrete, then filled with more concrete, it definitely didn’t float down the river. Nor is it likely that a bicycle bandit lifted it and put it in his knapsack. But just what happened to the metre-high
swan that was perched on the southern banks of the South Alouette River, near Davison’s Pool and hot rocks, a popular swimming hole, remains unknown. But there’s no sign of someone smashing it or toppling it into the river, says Anna Bailey, from whose property the swan was stolen. “I can’t see any rem-

The statue went missing Monday afternoon or evening. Bailey was out for awhile then realized it was gone when she returned. “I can see it from my kitchen window.� The big bird has been in the back yard of the house on 128th Crescent for at least a decade, although Bailey’s only been there for a few years. “It’s quite a gorgeouslooking thing,� said neighbour Ann Roberts. The theft has been reported to Ridge Meadows RCMP.

Gas prices remain stubbornly high despite the latest slide in crude oil prices and infuriated Lower Mainland motorists are feeling gouged yet again. Metro Vancouver gasoline is down only slightly from $1.40 a litre a year ago, while crude has plunged more than 50 per cent from around $98 a barrel to less than $44 as of Friday. It’s as if the widely heralded era of cheap energy has bypassed B.C. But petroleum industry analysts say it all boils down to supply and demand. Crude oil accounts for less than half of the end cost of a litre of gasoline, with government taxes and refining charges the other big factors. “I wish there was a

simple explanation,� said Jason Parent, of the Kent Marketing Group. “There isn’t much of a relationship on a day-to-day basis between crude oil and retail gasoline.� Expecting gas to move in lockstep with crude oil is somewhat akin to expecting house prices to follow lumber prices, without recognizing scarce land or an influx of buyers might have an influence. Parent said crude and gas prices can go in different directions for different reasons, and gas prices in B.C. can diverge from what other Canadians pay – which is what’s happening now. Most of the difference between Metro Vancouver prices and the rest of the country is explained by the higher 17-cents-a-litre TransLink tax, as well as B.C.’s carbon tax. Motorists are pay-
ing just over $1 in Alberta, a few cents more in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and $1.10 to $1.20 in most of eastern Canada. Crude and wholesale gas are priced in U.S. dollars, so Canadians are paying with a devalued currency that simply doesn’t go as far as it did a year ago. So who is profiting from the persistently high pump prices? “Right now, refiners are the big winners,� Parent said. They’re running close to capacity, demand is up because of lower gas prices and therefore refiners can charge more than usual. If crude oil prices get even cheaper – potentially as sanctions against Iran end and more oil pours onto the world market – there’s no guarantee gas prices will follow because of the refining constraints in North America.

tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a tough season for Fraser Valley lawn-care aficionados. Low water inventory has resulted in water-use restrictions and outright bans on watering lawns. Yet turf experts maintain that naturally green and healthy lawns moderate summer temperatures by absorbing the sunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s energy during the day and slow releasing it in the evening. So when lawns turn brown from a lack of water, area temperatures rise during the day. So how can Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents maintain healthy lawns while under such sprinkling restrictions? Well, according to the Canada Housing and Mortgage Corporation, rainwater harvesting is an ancient practice, dating back thousands of years, and is still commonly used in many rural places throughout the world. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Today, rainwater harvesting is making a comeback in urban centres as an additional source of water for a range of uses in and around the home.â&#x20AC;? According to the CHMC, in many European countries, and some regions of Canada, having a limited amount of water that can be economically delivered to residences as potable water or limited technology available to treat water, has resulted in large-scale rainwater harvesting to help meet water demand. With summer water restrictions becoming the annual norm in Greater Vancouver Regional District and the Fraser Valley, some experts are advocating for increased rainwater collection by homeowners to maintain lawns and gardens. And indeed the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society encourages rainwater collection. The agency annually sells modern rain barrels; although they are sold out for 2015. The RMRS says its Systern rain barrel â&#x20AC;&#x153;can lower municipal water demands and save energy at water treatment facilities by reducing water pollution and storm water runoff. Rain water, free from chlorine and water treatment chemicals, is an excellent water source for lawns, plants and gardens.â&#x20AC;? Elsewhere in B.C., rainwater collection is being considered on larger scales. The Regional District of Nanaimo is one such local government. According to Joe Stanhope, chair of the RDN board of governors, rainwater harvesting is the collection and storage of rainwater for potable and non-potable uses, and they say that with the right controls in place, harvested rainwater

can be used for irrigation, outdoor cleaning, flushing toilets, washing clothes, and even drinking water. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Replacing municipally treated water or groundwater with rainwater for these uses alleviates pressure on regional aquifers and sensitive ecosystems, and reduces demands on municipal infrastructure,â&#x20AC;? Stanhope says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stored rainwater provides an ideal source of readily available water, particularly during the long dry summers or in locations facing declining groundwater levels.â&#x20AC;? The RDN has published its Rainwater Harvesting Best Practices Guidebook to provide useful information to residents who want to learn more about the benefits and opportunities of rainwater harvesting for non-potable and

Maple Ridge athletes dominated the canoe and kayak competitions at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games in Woods Buffalo, Alta., taking home 31 medals. Matthew Koehler, 17, won nine medals at the games, including five gold on the water, taking home top spot along with partner Alex Brent in the K-2 500 metre, 1,000 m, and 5,000 m. Koehler was also part of Team B.C’s gold medal performance in the K-4 500 m and 1,000 m. Teammate Seb Sorescu of Maple Ridge, 17, came home with 10 medals, winning two gold, five silver and three bronze. Sorescu won gold as part of the K-4 500 m and 1,000 m teams. Justin Won of Maple Ridge, 16, rounded out the boys dominant performance, grabbing two gold as part of the K-4 500 m and 1,000 m teams, and three silver with Sorescu in the K-2 500 m, 1,000, m and 5,000 m events. On the girls’ side, Maple Ridge’s Sandra Sorescu and Julianna Won paddled to gold in K-4 200 m and 500 m. Sorescu also won bronze in the K-4 1,000 m. Won grabbed a pair of bronze medals in K-2 500 m and K-4 1,000 m. In baseball, Maple Ridge’s Michael Stovman collected gold as part of Team B.C. as it won its third straight Western Canada Summer Games title. The hardthrowing lefty pitched 6.2 in-
nings, giving up five hits with an ERA of 2.44. In six plate appearances, Stovman had a walk and a single to go with a run scored and an RBI in the team’s 11-0 gold-medal win over Alberta. In girl’s softball, Maple Ridge’s Courtney De Adder was part of the gold-medal winning team that trounced Alberta, 11-0 in the final. ‘Team B.C. went 8-1 in round robin play. Natasha Akbarizadeh rounded out the gold-medal haul as the hammer thrower took home top honours with a toss of 12.84 m. The 19-year-old was the 2014 B.C. high school champion and currently attends Gardner Webb University in North Carolina, where she finished fifth at the 2015 Big South Conference championships. Pitt Meadows’ Kelsey Anne MacDonald won a pair of silver medals in cross country mountain biking and individual time trails. MacDonald also grabbed a pair of bronze medals in the road race and cross country eliminator. Will Bundy earned silver in soccer, as Team B.C. fell 1-0 to Alberta in the final. In track, Pitt Meadows’ Reid Muller collected bronze in the 800 m final. In total, Team B.C. had 280 podium performances, including 134 gold, 86 silver, 61 bronze. Team B.C. topped the medal count, ahead of Alberta and Manitoba.

Cecile Kwon of Maple Ridge will have to wait to make her pro debut after shooting an 84 Monday at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open Qualifier at Pitt Meadows Golf Club. A total of 43 golfers teed off in hopes of landing one of the four available spots for the start of the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open on Thursday at the Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam. Kwon, a 15-year-old righty with two top-10 finishes in tournament play this year, finished tied for 33rd. Australia’s Stacey Keating was the top finisher, carding a two-under 70. She will be joined by California’s Kristen Park, who shot a one-under 71, Louise Stahle of Sweden, who was even for the day at 72, and Vancouver’s Tiffany Kong, who was also even par for her round.

common sight in weight rooms is observing people drinking protein shakes or talking endlessly about eating or supplementing more protein in order to build muscle. But do weight lifters need all that much protein? What about the rest of us – are we getting enough? Protein is an important nutrient required for the building, maintenance, and repair of tissues in the body. When we exercise, we break down the protein in our muscles and what we eat is synthesized to replace, or even build more muscle. Lifting weights breaks down our muscles to a high degree. Endurance athletes break down more protein than we used to think, but weight lifting and high resistance training breaks it down the most. But the body seems to have a maximum rate of protein synthesis, no matter how hard we exercise. Studies over the past 20 years have consistently shown that average, sedentary people only need to eat about 0.8 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight. When weight lifters and body builders exercise to the peak of their ability, they can only make use and process about 1.8 grams of protein per kg body weight per day.

Long list of conditions for Trans Mountain approval The National Energy Board has released a draft list of 145 conditions for approval of Kinder Morgan Canada’s oil pipeline expansion project, including environmental protection plans for land and marine operations. Conditions include the possibility of dredging for the expansion of the Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby, where the original Trans Mountain pipeline has delivered crude oil and refined products since 1953. Kinder Morgan is proposing to twin the line to ramp up shipments of diluted bitumen from northern Alberta that began intermittently in the late 1980s. The $5.4 billion expansion project would nearly triple the line’s capacity to 890,000 barrels per day, resulting in a seven-fold increase in oil tankers entering and leaving Vancouver harbour. Kinder Morgan Canada president Ian Anderson said Thursday
the company will be seeking clarification on the timing of some of the conditions, and will file its comments to the NEB review panel Aug. 20. Most major conditions, including plans for watercourse crossings along the route, are to be filed at least 90 days before construction begins. “Our initial review of the draft conditions is that they are rigorous but achievable,” Anderson said. NEB hearings are to resume Monday, when the B.C. government is expected to formalize its position, based on Premier Christy Clark’s five conditions for new heavy oil pipelines. They include a “world-class” spill response capability on land and sea, approval and benefit sharing by affected First Nations, and a still-undefined “fair share” of benefits for the province. Those conditions were included in B.C.’s position opposing the Enbridge Northern Gateway project, which the federal government approved with its own list

The release of a spring survey of B.C. municipalities confirms the problems that led to the firing of B.C.’s first Auditor General for Local Government in March. The Union of B.C. Municipalities surveyed the 17 local governments that had participated in former AGLG Basia Ruta’s reviews by March. All but one responded that AGLG staff and auditors lacked understanding of how local government operates in B.C. One community with RCMP service said the AGLG was “not quite sure how to assess our situation” because the municipality had little discretion over the terms of its policing contract. The survey also found that high turnover in Rutia’s office hampered its performance audits. That was one of the factors that led to Ruta being fired, after she refused to cooperate with a review of her office’s functions. Former B.C. auditor general Arn van Iersel was appointed acting AGLG in April and is working with the UBCM on its recommendations, including training of audit staff. Hired to execute an idea proposed by Premier Christy Clark in her 2012 bid for the B.C. Liberal Party leadership, Ruta set herself a target of 18 audits in the first year. Clashes with staff at her Surrey office and her supervising board began to emerge, and only one audit was completed in that time.

Steffie was born March 17, 1932 in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, one of 13 children. She moved to Vancouver in the early 1950’s, met her husband Joe and married in 1952 and had 3 children. Linda, Phyllis and Eugene. They all grew up in East Vancouver where Steffie was a cook in many restaurants in the Vancouver area. Joe, Steffie and Linda all moved to Maple Ridge in 1990 and created a new life there. Steffie was a fantastic cook and she wasn’t happy until everybody was full and happy. She loved going to Bingo and made many friends there and her and Linda were regular fixtures at the Casinos, never seeming to lose money. THOMPSON, Cynthia (Cindy) Michell August 11, 1957 August 12, 2015 It is with deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Cindy Thompson. Cindy was a teacher whose entire 35 year teaching career was spent at Maple Ridge Secondary School. Her years of endless effort to provide the best experience for youth both in and out of the classroom will be truly missed but never forgotten. PE & coaching were her first teaching passions. Ms. Thompson’s senior field hockey & basketball teams were always some of the best prepared and most successful in the province. In the early 1990’s she served as President of the B.C. Secondary School Girls’ Basketball Association. For the past 20 years her passion has been for teaching literacy and reading. Her creative approaches and challenge to students to learn will always be remembered. In her younger years Cindy enjoyed running, swimming, and golf. More recently she loved books, her dogs Allister, Zeb and Bailey, walking, cooking, yoga, travel to visit family in Vernon and vacations with Ken in Palm Springs made her life complete. Cindy is survived by her loving husband of over 30 years Ken Dockendorf, mother Tillie Ogasawara, sister Laurie (Norm) Amiel, nephews Trevor and Tyler Amiel, step daughters, Tanya (Roger) Dunbar, Nicole (Steve) Forseth, Karen (Craig) Richardson, 4 grandchildren and extended family. Cindy was predeceased by her father, Mickey Ogasawara, grandparents Sigie (Amy) Ogasawara and Ewald (Martha) Gatzke.
