Welcome back! Eighteen students and three chaperones from Kimberley’s sister city of Annaka, Japan are in town for a one-week summer program hosted by the Rocky Mountain International Student Program. The students are taking in ESL classes during the morning and participating in a variety of local activities and trips during the afternoon. On the first day of their program they visited City Hall and were officially welcomed to Kimberley by Deputy Mayor Albert Hoglund. Levels in the reservoir behind the Mark Creek Dam have dropped again as drought conditions continue in the East Kootenay. While the City of Kimberley will not be tightening the mandatory even/odd days watering restrictions currently in place, they are going to scale back on their own water use. It was announced this week that watering of city parks is being scaled back, effective immediately. The Platzl water fountain will only be on daily from noon to 5 p.m. Residents are asked to think about their own water use and how much they really need. Every little bit saved helps, is the message from the City of Kimberley. Meanwhile in Cranbrook, water restrictions have stepped up. The water level in Phillips Reservoir, where the City draws its water, contin-

another Sullivan Mine type sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX) deposit. His latest venture is drilling on the Sully project about 30 kilometres due east of Kimberley. A drill program commenced on the Sully property in 2014 and was not shut down for lack of findings, but for lack of money. In early 2014 SFM’s Project Team defined twin parallel vertical masses, the EAST and WEST Targets at the Sully Project. “We proved last year that these masses occurred at exactly the same geological time as the Sullivan Mine deposit,” Broughton
said. “That’s what brings us back to this site. “Unfortunately we ran out of money last year, but now we are getting traction again. There is interest in zinc especially.” Broughton was showing some potential Chinese investors the project this week, and says that everything is in place to begin drilling by October at the latest. What makes the project so compelling, Broughton says, is that science points to there being more than one massive SEDEX deposit in this basin. See SULLY, page 4
Calgary police seek missing teen FOR THE BULLE TIN
The Calgary Police Service is seeking public assistance to locate a missing B.C. teen. Kayla Killoran Roy, 17, was last seen in Cranbrook, B.C., during the first week of July 2015. She mentioned she was going to go to
Calgary with a man named “Steve” and has not been heard from since. Killoran Roy is described as Aboriginal, approximately 5’3” tall, 110 pounds, with long black hair and hazel eyes. A photo of her can be found on The City of

‘It was scary as hell!’ Couple thinks they were drugged at Wapiti Music Festival earlier this month.

A couple from Canmore, Alta., who said they think they their drinks were drugged at the recent Wapiti Music Festival IN Fernie want the public to be on the lookout for drink tampering. Mark Single, 30 and Kristina Forester, 28, came to Fernie for the festival on Aug. 7 and said they think drugs were slipped into their drinks in the beer gardens on the Friday night. Both Single and Forester said they can’t remember many details of the night within an hour of consuming the drinks, and woke up in the Elk Valley Hospital around 3 a.m. on Aug. 8. “It was scary as Hell,” said Single. “We were paralyzed, literally paralyzed. [Kristina] couldn’t even speak. They said that I was
talking but I don’t remember a word of it.” The couple said Forester went to get drinks for Single and a friend of theirs who was also in attendance. Adhering to the Wapiti policy, Forester could only buy one drink at a time. She said a man of average build with a beard and dark hair was in line next to her and offered to hold her drink while she went to get the other drinks. “[The man] was right there, talking to people, and he bought one beer for me, and while I went to buy a cider, he was holding both of the beers. And those were the drinks that my boyfriend and I had.” Single said he and Forester had been drinking before the festival, but said he did not believe it was enough to warrant six hours of memory loss. “We had the drinks,

it would have been about 8:30 [p.m.]. I have some text messages and phone calls that I made at 9:30 [p.m.] that I don’t remember making,” Single said, “The ambulance and everybody was there, neither of us remember any of that, getting to the hospital. “We both kind of remember struggling to get home, and I have a bit of a memory of pretty much dragging my girlfriend the last bit, because we knew that something was pretty wrong,” said Single. The RCMP confirmed they received an ambulance report detailing the situation. Wapiti organizer Kevin McIsaac said this was the first he has heard drinks being tampered with in his 5-year history with the event. Single and Forester say they came forward with their story because they want to raise awareness about date rape drugs and drink tampering. “It was scary to be in the hospital, but I actually felt a lot safer to be there, so I felt kind of glad because I really didn’t know what was wrong, so it was good to know that somebody is helping you. I’m just glad that somebody came to help us,” said Forester. Dean Nicholson, the executive director of East Kootenay addiction, said he encourages people to be cautious of their drinks and taking drinks from strangers. “You don’t want to be accepting drinks from people that you haven’t seen, or you haven’t seen the drink being made or poured,” he said. Along with this, he promotes the “buddy system”, and having a friend look after your beverage if you have to leave it, but to never leave a drink unattended.

Chief judge reviews online provincial court records To m F l e tc h e r Black Press
B.C. is the only province where charges and convictions in provincial court are posted on a public database as well as being available to courthouse visitors. One problem is that the information has been used by employers or landlords for criminal record checks that may find a charge but not the later acquittal. Another is posting the imposition of a peace bond, which can leave the false impression that someone has been convicted of an offence. Thomas Crabtree, chief judge of the B.C. Provincial Court, is reviewing the practice of posting court records online, and is seeking public input until Sept. 18. Court Services Online has been available since 2008, allowing anyone to search by name or case number to find information on charges, court appearances and sentences. The online information is blocked if the accused is acquitted, charges are withdrawn, a publication ban is ordered or when a pardon is later granted to seal the record of a conviction. Absolute discharge conviction records are removed from the public database after a year, and conditional discharges after three years. A stay of proceedings means the online case file is

B.C. Provincial Court Chief Judge Thomas Crabtree blocked after a year, although records for all cases remain at court registries for access in person. In a consultation memo on the issue, Crabtree notes that B.C.’s Court Services Online help desk received frequent requests to use the service as a criminal record check. The memo says that when information on acquittals was still available, the service received “a significant number” of complaints of negative effects from public access to charges that did not lead to conviction. Some people said they only realized the information was public
when they were sent a link by co-workers or employers. The memo offers several options for dealing with peace bonds, which are ordered to restrict activities of parties in a dispute and are currently left online indefinitely. After a couple of days of relatively clear skies in the Cranbrook-Kimberley area, the valley is once again filled with thick smoke — largely from the enormous wildfires burning south of the border. “We’ve had smoke from large fires in the U.S.A come into the area (Wednesday) afternoon, with the southerly wind,” said Fanny Bernard, Fire Information Officer with the Southeast Fire Centre. “That was mixed in from larger incidents from the Kamloops Fire Centre as well, just west of the East Kootenay. Bernard said the smoke would likely dissipate Thursday afternoon, but unfortunately the winds are forecasted to shift again to a southerly direction (from the south), which will fill
valleys in southeast B.C. with more smoke. “The good news is there are no fires in the Cranbrook-Kimberley area that would be putting out this amount of smoke. There are only a few fires — there’s a very small fire in Kidd Creek, it’s burning very remotely, in the Kootenay Lake zone.” While all is relatively quiet on the East Kootenay front, in Idaho and Washington Firefighters on several fronts were fighting against wildfires advancing on towns. Authorities say three firefighters died after their vehicle crashed and was apparently caught by a “hellstorm” of flames as they battled a blaze in Washington state. Four other firefighters were injured near Twisp. The news came after officials urged people in the popular outdoor-recreation centres of Twisp and Wintrop to evacuate. See Page 5

Pursuing the elusive Sullivan-style deposit From page 1 “The Sullivan Basin itself is very large and it makes sense that where there was one, there’s another.” Broughton explains that these deposits were once “black smokers” at the bottom of an ocean. “You need a basin that’s shallow and quite — not a lot of other minerals drifting in. All these little grains of sulphides come up through the vent. The Sullivan Mine was one that occurred. You’d need them to be about 30 kilometres apart for another to occur. “So many pieces of the puzzle overlap in one place.” That place is the Sully Project. One of the problems in finding another SEDEX deposit in this basin is that it really needs a massive drill program, which junior mining companies cannot do. “A junior company can usually afford one or two holes that might be meaningful,” Broughton said. “But it doesn’t work that way. target, it needs millions to properly explore it. “But we’re persisting. If we do drill some massive sulphides, we’ll have an unlimited amount of money to explore further.”
Broughton says that in the last drill program the last hole just missed intersecting the eastern target. The theory is that the drill hole did hit Sullivan time at the appropriate depth but that

Earth’s warmest July on Smoke fills valley record, but not in this area Arne Petryshen With files from AP
U.S. weather official called July the planet’s warmest month on record, but on Cranbrook’s scale it is only the 10th warmest. Lisa Caldwell, Environment Canada Meteorologist, said the mean temperature, which is all the all the temperatures averaged out for the month, for July 2015 was 20.2 degrees Celcius. “That makes it the 10th warmest,” Caldwell said. “It was overly, particularly warm.” There were three daily records set over the month. There was a hot period at the beginning of the month — July 3 and 4, with record breaking days, where the temperature was 36 degrees for both days. Then there was a hot spell on July 31 where Cranbrook reached 35.9 degrees Celsius, which again was a record. “There wasn’t an over abundance of rain, but just enough. There was 20.3 mm of rain. That compares to 38.3 of normal, so we’re below normal but not completely dry.” The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found that July’s average global temperature was 16.6 Celsius, beating the previous mark set in 1998 and 2010 by about one-seventh of a degree. That’s a large margin for weather records, with previous monthly heat records broken by a 20th of a degree or less. “It just reaffirms what we already know: that the Earth is warming,” said NOAA climate scientist Jake Crouch. “The warming is accelerating and we’re really seeing it this year.” Caldwell said she couldn’t imagine the amount of numbers they would have had to crunch to get the world figures. She said across BC it was a warmer than normal July — in Fort Saint John it is was the seventh warmest, while in Kelowna and Victoria it is was the second warmest. “A lot of the spots did make the top 10 warmest,” she said. “That is significant that you got into the top ten warmest for
the minimum temperatures. A lot of our stations do go back a hundred years.” In BC there is only one person crunching all the numbers. But Caldwell said that doesn’t stop anyone from going on the website and doing their own number crunching. “All the data is there on the website,” she said. “It’s all in spreadsheet format. So if you like crunching numbers, and your good at spreadsheets, you can just take things away and form macros and ding, out comes all the numbers. It is possible. You can do it yourself. It’s like DIY climatology.” NOAA records go back to 1880. Separate calculations by NASA and the Japanese weather agency also found July 2015 to be a record. The first seven months of 2015 were the hottest January-to-July span on record, according to NOAA. The seven-month average temperature of 58.43 degrees (14.7 Celsius) is 1.53 degrees warmer than the 20th-century average and a sixth of a degree warmer than the old record set in 2010. Given that the temperatures have already been so high already - especially the oceans, which are slow to cool NOAA climate scientist Jessica Blunden said she is “99 per cent certain” that 2015 will be the hottest on record for the
globe. The oceans would have to cool dramatically to prevent it, and they are trending warmer, not cooler, she said. Crouch, Blunden and other scientists outside of the government said these temperatures are caused by a combination of man-made climate change and a strong, near-record El Nino. An El Nino is a warming of the equatorial Pacific Ocean that alters weather worldwide for about a year. The oceans drove the globe to record levels. Not only were the world’s oceans the warmest they’ve been in July, but they were 1.35 degrees warmer than the 20th-century average. The heat hit hard in much of Europe and the Middle East. It was the hottest July on record in Austria, where records go back to 1767. Parts of France had temperatures that were on average 7 degrees above normal and temperatures broke 100 in the Netherlands, which is a rarity. And an Iranian city had a heat index (the “feels like” temperature) of 165 degrees (74 Celsius), which was still not quite record. Nine of the 10 hottest months on record have happened since 2005, according to NOAA. Twenty-two of the 25 hottest months on record have occurred after the year 2000. The other three were in 1998 and 1997. This shows that despite what climate
change doubters say, there is no pause in warming since 1998, Blunden said. It doesn’t matter if a month or a year is No. 1 or No. 2 or No. 5 hottest on record, said University of Georgia climate scientist Marshall Shepherd. “The records are getting attention but I worry the public will grow weary of reports of new records each month,” Shepherd said in an email. “I am more concerned about how the Earth is starting to respond to the changes and the implications for my children.” For this area, Caldwell said summer is not over yet. “There is going to be a brief blitz as a cold front comes through on Friday. This should bring a few showers to the southeastern part of British Columbia,” she said, adding there is also a risk of a thunderstorm. “The amount of rain that might come out of this, of you’re extremely lucky, is about 10 mm of rain. After that if the front goes zooming through, our friend the upper ridge, which has been the main weather driver that gives us the sunny weather, it bounces back.” Saturday will be a cooler day of only about 21 degrees Celsius, then she said temperatures should rebound over the weekend, with 27 degrees on Sunday and up to 31 on Monday. “So summer is defi-

Firefighters are working fast as they try to contain the huge Rock Creek fire burning east of Osoyoos, B.C., but changing weather could undermine their best efforts. The B.C. Wildfire Service says the fire is
now 50 per cent contained, but less smoke and better mapping reveal flames have scorched 42-square kilometres of bush. A change in weather is also on the way, with a dry, cold front forecast to sweep across B.C.’s boundary region, which hugs the U.S. border. The wildfire service warns the front could pack some strong winds, potentially fanning the Rock Creek fire, complicating efforts to fully contain it. All evacuation orders have now been lifted for hundreds of people forced out by the fire, but evacuation alerts are still in effect and residents have been warned they may have to leave on short notice. Thirty homes and 15 outbuildings have been destroyed since the human-caused blaze broke out one week ago. “We do have a large incidence in British Columbia, unfortunately,” Bernard said.” Bernard urged the public to check out the

If
you’ve been following the trial of disgraced Senator Mike Duffy at all, you will know that Nigel Wright has been on the stand for six days, five of them under cross–examination. Wright was Prime Minister Harper’s former Chief of Staff. He was forced out of his position after it became clear that he had written a $90,000 cheque so that Duffy could repay questionable expenses which he had claimed. Wright was supposed to be the star witness for the prosecution, but Duffy’s defense lawyer, Donald Bayne tore into him during the cross–examination. Bayne suggested that Wright and the Prime Minister’s Office helped create a “deliberately deceptive scenario” for Canadians when the public was led to believe that Duffy had repaid his questionable expenses. Apparently the original plan was that the Conservative Party would cover the bill for Duffy’s expenses. But when it became clear just how expensive the claim was, Wright paid the $90,000 out of his own pocket to save the government from another embarrassing scandal. Wright is a very successful businessman and lawyer, and the $90,000 barely made a dent in his finances. He’s clearly part of the 1%, and seems not even to have blinked at the amount which would be staggering to most of the rest of us. When asked why he did this, Wright said he was following the advice of a Bible passage which counsels helping others, but to do so quietly, without fanfare. He was being generous but keeping it quiet because of religious principle. He quoted Matthew 6:
“Beware of practising your piety before others in order to be seen by them,” and “do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” (Matthew 6: 1, 3) Wright, who has described himself as a devout Anglican and a lay leader in a local church, said, “I was doing a good deed, and this is sort of Matthew 6 … You should do these things quietly and not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” However, this is such a self–serving claim that it staggers the imagination. Wright conveniently quotes only those parts of Matthew 6 that bolsters his own claim, and in Rev. Yme doing so completely misinterprets the whole passage. Woensdregt Here’s the whole passage. “Beware of practising your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6 is not about keeping secrets as Wright claims, and certainly not about a government lying to the people. This whole section of Jesus’ teaching is about giving alms, which by definition has nothing to do with covering up illegitimate expense claims made by Canadian Senators who earn a minimum of $140,000 a year. On CBC’s “The National”, Chantal Hébert speaking with the At Issue panel
commented that “for many people, the Biblical reference of ‘I’m doing this because I’m a good Samaritan’ will [not be believed] by most people, because it’s really hard to jibe the notion of being a good Samaritan, trying to help the public purse with encouraging people to lie to the public and to weave a web of deception.” Matthew 6 also contains these words: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also … No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” (Matthew 6: 19–21, 24) Wright has been a very successful and highly intelligent businessman who has used his intelligence to store up considerable treasure on earth. A $90,000 cheque to cover questionable expense claims has nothing to do with “giving alms”. It had everything to do with protecting a secretive government which seeks above all else to hold on to power — another form of serving wealth (or traditionally “Mammon” in the old King James translation). When Wright quoted Matthew 6 in his testimony as an attempt to justify his actions, he simply piled one more scandal on top of all the other scandals which has marked the current government of Canada. Literacy from the ground up What’s Up?
It took over a year, and a lot of campaigning, but avid reader Victor Miron finally got his wish. In his home town of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, bus transportation was free of charge to anyone with a book. For five straight days, if you read on the bus, transportation was free. Although Cluj-Napoca’s City Council was skeptical at first, a full year of positive feedback from the residents helped change their minds. In the end it was a win-win situation for all involved. The city itself received positive world-wide recognition; public transportation became heavily discussed and exciting. More importantly, those who already read on the city buses were rewarded, while many new readers were created. Closer to home, a similar idea was sparked by Courtney Holmes, a Dubuque, Iowa, barber. Worried about the reading ability of the children he encountered, he came up with a novel idea. If a child of any age read to him while he cut their hair, the haircut was free. When word got out lineups snaked outside the doorway to Holme’s salon. He patiently listened to kids read to him through a marathon of cuts, always turning the clippers off to help youngsters sound out any words they were not familiar with. “I think a lot of parents realize that literacy is important, but I don’t think they are actually doing that in their homes, reading with their children,” Holmes told reporters. “This is one small way that we can start something — to reach out to parents and let them know the importance of reading.”
What Holmes felt instinctively, government statistics confirmed. In Dubuque alone, if a child enters the third grade not reading at a third grade level, that child will never reach high school. That third grade reading level is also the level of the majority of Iowa’s prison inmates. Of course reading does more than give inoculate children against bleak futures. Michael Grothaus, a reporter for Fast Company, credits reading for repairing his mental health. A few years ago, Grothaus was desponBOOKNOTES dent when his being over for a job Mike Selby passed promotion collided with being rejected by the handful of universities he had applied to. Overwhelmed by feelings of hopelessness, he began to read ‘War and Peace.’ When he was finished, he felt something had changed in him. For reasons having nothing to do with repelling French invaders, Grothaus felt more in control of his own life, found it easier to focus, and was more optimistic about his future. What happened to Grothaus is actually one of the least know yet frequently researched benefits of reading. Besides entertainment or educational purposes, reading also greatly increases one’s mental and physical health. Researchers at the University of Liverpool have found that “reading can offer richer, broader, and more complex models of experience, which enable people to view their own lives from a refreshed perspective and with renewed understanding.”
“People who read find it easier to make decisions, plan, and prioritize, and this may be because they are more able to recognize that difficulty and setback are unavoidable aspects of human life.” Findings by The Reading Agency in Europe also found that the “reading for pleasure in general can also help prevent conditions such as stress, depression, and dementia.” This is supported by the National Academy of Sciences, whose current studies state reading can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by 250 percent. Besides all this, the simple act of reading (which is not simple at all: even today, 775 million adults can’t do it), makes one more tolerant. Dr. Louise Billington, whose area of expertise is reading and health, found that “readers have a stronger and more engaged awareness of social issues and of cultural diversity than non-readers: their template of what the world is, is widened, and their place within it feels more secure.” Of particular note, it appears not to matter what one reads, as long as one does. An ‘Archie’ comic can have the same mental health benefits as ‘War and Peace’ (comic books always get a bad rap, but they share a single factor with their more respected non-illustrated cousins — they still have to be read). Those who want to crack open a book, or have a youngster read to or with him, can do so for the small price of a library card, which just so happens to be free. Another hidden benefit or reading. Oil Wars: Fracking is winning “No one can set the price of oil. It’s up to Allah,” said Saudi Arabian Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi in May. But less devout people believe that Saudi Arabia has been trying very hard to set the price of oil — and to set it low. Moreover, it has been remarkably successful, because last week the price of oil was in the mid $40s per barrel, down from just over $100 last May. But Riyadh is not achieving its objective. Saudi Arabia, like any oil producer, likes a high price for its oil, but since it is very rich and has huge reserves it thinks long-term. Watching American oil production almost double in the past seven years, mainly thanks to the rapid rise of fracking, the Saudis could see that they risked losing their role as the “swing producer” who can raise or lower the oil price just by cutting or increasing its own production. The only way Saudi Arabia could keep that role was to drive the American frackers out of business. Production costs are secret in the oil world, but the Saudis assumed that the injection of water, sand and chemicals into shale rock at high pressure makes hydraulic fracturing — fracking — very expensive. So the Saudi strategy is to keep its own production high in order to push the oil price down. If the price stays low enough for long enough, high-cost producers like the frackers will have to close down. Then, once the competition had been eliminat-
ed, Saudi Arabia jacks the price back up by cutting its own production, and the glory days return. In the meantime Saudi Arabia is losing income too, of course, and oil revenues account for 90 percent of the national budget. It can live on savings for a while, but it needs a fairly quick win. It would be politically unwise to cut the lavish government spending that keeps the Saudi population happy, and the government is also involved in an expensive war in Yemen. The missing income has mostly been replaced by withdrawals from the country’s huge foreign reserves, estimated a year Gwynne ago at $700 billion — but those reserves have fallen Dyer by $65 billion in the past year. The brutal fact is that the Saudis are losing this battle. When the US was the biggest producer of oil, before about 1970, it was the swing producer. Within a few years, it will have overtaken Saudi oil production and will be the swing producer again. And there is nothing Riyadh can do about it. The Saudis made two mistakes. The first was to overestimate the cost of US shale oil production, and assume that any price below about $80 per barrel would make it unprofitable. There are some shale oil plays for which this is true, but the costs vary wildly, according to the local geology, and can be as low as $20 per barrel. Most shale oil is profitable at $60 per barrel, and
that proportion is rising rapidly as consolidation proceeds and efficiency rises. Their other, bigger mistake was to believe that victory was possible at all. When you stop production from a conventional oil well, there is a large permanent loss of flow when you restart production. The pores in the oil-bearing rock clog up, and that permanently reduces the “bottom-hole” pressure that forces the oil to the surface. Stopping production at a shale-oil site incurs no such loss, since the producers create the pressure themselves. Uncap it, and the flow resumes as before. So even if the Saudis succeeded in forcing most of the shale-oil sites to close, the shale producers would just turn the flow on again as soon as Saudi Arabia declared victory and cut production to get the price of oil back up. It will take a little more time to the Saudis to acknowledge their mistake, and they may not even be able to get the price back up to where they need it by cutting production. American production will continue to rise, and Iranian oil will probably also be coming back on the market in a big way by next year. The Saudis will stay rich, but they will have to cut their spending and they will suffer a permanent loss of influence. Their only consolation will be that Iran, which they see as their greatest enemy, won’t be able to use its oil to buy influence either. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London.

With the junior hockey season quickly upon us, the defending Kootenay International Junior Hockey League champion Kimberley Dynamiters have announced their training camp schedule, which is set to begin Friday, Sept. 4 at the Kimberley Civic Centre. In a unique change, the Dynamiters will not play any exhibition games in 2015. During the 2014 pre-season, the Nitros skated in four exhibition games, going 2-0-2. According to Nitros general manager Mike Reid, the camp is expected to be a small, but competitive one, with many players returning from the 2014-15 championship squad. With the expected nature of the camp, the Dynamiters staff opted against playing any exhibition tilts. Final camp rosters are expected to be available closer to the open-
ing of camp. The Dynamiters will host a conditioning camp prior to the opening of main camp. Conditioning camp gets underway Monday, Aug. 31 and rolls through Thursday, Sept. 3, with players set to run through a variety of onand off-ice conditioning drills. Main camp opens Sept. 4, with the group split into two squads. Team A will run through an on-ice session beginning at 6 p.m., with Team B to follow at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 6 will feature intra-squad scrimmage sessions at 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. each day. GREENSBORO, N.C. - Tiger Woods wasted no time getting comfortable at the Wyndham Championship. Woods had his best round in more than two years Thursday, shooting a 6-under 64 in his first competitive round at Sedgefield Country Club. It was his lowest score on the PGA Tour since his 61 in the second round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in 2013.
Woods took advantage of a low-scoring day at what he called a “tricky” Donald Ross-designed course that gave up bunches of birdies after morning showers softened up the fairways and greens. “When it’s like this,” Woods said, “you’ve got to throw darts and go low.” He set the tone by holing a 54-foot chip shot on his first hole, the par-4 10th, for the first of his seven birdies. Woods arrived insisting he was playing bet-
ter than his recent results might indicate. He had missed the cut in three straight majors and had not finished better than a tie for 17th at The Masters. He’s at
No. 187 on the FedEx Cup points list and probably needs a win to earn a playoff spot. Yet he said after last week’s early exit from the PGA Championship that those results belied the improvement he was making in his game. “I know it’s crazy to say, but I wasn’t playing that poorly at PGA,” Woods said. “Any borderline shot (at Whistling Straits) I never got away with it, and that’s the way it goes. I felt like I was hitting the ball good enough and just
kept progressing, and today was just a continuation of it.” Especially on that first hole. His shot from the left side of the green landed inside of 10 feet from the cup and rolled in. “I went for the shot, and instead of playing something more conservative, the greens were hard and fast, and I wanted to play something long,” Woods said. “I got aggressive with it, and I went for it, and I pulled it off. ... I could see it going in.”

ZURICH - FIFA has met with some World Cup sponsors in a meeting they demanded after a corruption crisis rocked football’s governing body.
Little detail was revealed after the closeddoor session shrouded in secrecy at FIFA headquarters. In a terse statement, FIFA says it “reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, reform,
and collaboration with its valued partners.” FIFA adds: “No further comment will be made on the internal discussions between the parties.” Officials from World Cup sponsors Adidas,
Budweiser, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Visa attended, FIFA says. Those sponsors say in a joint statement that they “reiterated our expectations for robust reform, and we will continue to engage with FIFA.”
Gazprom and Hyundai were absent with no reason given. Two sponsor representatives will join a FIFA-appointed reforms committee which first meets Sept. 2-3.

LONDON, Ont. - A court appearance has been put over until next month for Buffalo Sabres star Ryan O’Reilly, who has been charged with impaired driving. The 24-year-old’s lawyer appeared in a London, Ont., court on his behalf Thursday. O’Reilly’s next court appearance was set for Sept. 10. The forward from Bluewater, Ont., was arrested and charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene on July 9. Police say a green pick-up truck was driven into the side of a Tim
Hortons in Lucan, Ont., a community north of London, around 4 a.m., before driving away. O’Reilly was traded from the Colorado Avalanche to Buffalo in June along with forward Jamie McGinn for Mikhail Grigorenko, JT Compher, defenceman Nikita Zadorov and the 31st pick of June’s NHL draft. The Sabres signed O’Reilly to a seven-year extension on July 3 for US$52.5 million. He’s due to make $6.2 million next season. Last year with the Avalanche, O’Reilly scored 17 goals and 38 assists in 82 games.

Officials made the decision to call off the opening schedule as storms rolled in shortly after noon. Up to an inch of rain is expected. Eight games are now set for Friday. Little League officials believe that is the most played in one day at the World Series.

Stories of Amazon’s hard-driving corporate culture could happen here

TORONTO - The excesses of Amazon.com’s hard-driving corporate culture made headlines this week, raising questions about whether similar problems are possible at Canadian companies. The New York Times reported that the white-collar employees of the mega-popular online retailer are dealing with an unforgiving and competitive culture in which the obligations of the company take supremacy over every other aspect of life. In one illustrative anecdote, a woman returning from thyroid cancer treatment was given a low performance review because of what her colleagues accomplished while she was off work. Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO, issued a memo on Sunday in which he called for zero tolerance of the “shockingly callous” management practices alleged in the article, and encouraged employees to contact him directly by email if they had concerns. Marty Parker, founder of the human resources consultancy firm Waterstone Human Capital, said the extreme experiences of some Amazon workers isn’t a geographic quirk but a reflection of the company’s revolutionary ambitions. “This is one tough culture, but this is an environment that’s trying to take over the retail and digital universe,” he said in an interview. Parker said a company based in Canada with a similar mission would likely demand the same of its employees. “Amazon knows who they are,” he said. “They’re trying to take over the world and they recruit people based on that.” That type of extreme workplace environment is often seen in high-volume, low-margin industries like retail, where efficiency is paramount. The biggest problems arise, Parker added, when managers down the line from Bezos do their best to implement their own interpretations of his uncompromising vision for productivity. “They’re going to be representing that culture every day and some of them are just going to take it way too far,” he said. In a perverse way, Parker added, the revelations could help Amazon
attract new workers, at least those who thrive and want to work in that type of cut-throat environment. Markus Geisler, an associate professor at the
Schulich School of Business at York University, said Canadian companies are just as susceptible to the extremes of corporate culture as American ones.
“People are pointing to it as a uniquely American phenomenon, even though it is not,” he said. Geisler said corporate culture has been transformed in the last
30 years as businesses have begun expecting more and more from their employees. “The idea that employees should be radically flexible, always on

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am a 29-year-old married woman with a 14-month-old son. My husband and I live one hour away from his father and stepmother, “Gladys,” and two hours away from my parents. We all get along great. When I decided to go back to work, both my mother and Gladys volunteered to watch my son two days apiece. I pay a neighbor to watch him the remaining day, especially since she has two kids of her own and I want my son to have some socialization. It’s a perfect setup, and everyone is happy except for my husband’s mother, who lives in another state. She is furious that I allow Gladys to watch my son, stating that she is “not related” and “not really his grandma” and that “she will never love him like a real grandma should.” My mother-in-law wants me to have the neighbor watch my son for the two days Gladys is now taking, and she even offered to pay my neighbor so it would not come out of my pocket. My husband has a close relationship with his mother and a polite one with Gladys. (His mother never allowed him to get close to his stepmother, even though she didn’t come into the picture until years after the divorce.) He’s on the fence about this arrangement. But, Annie, I love Gladys. She is a retired kindergarten teacher who is wonderful with my son. My MIL is giving me a headache over this. I always thought we had a good relationship and her demands really blindsided me. Now she’s angry that I have allowed Gladys to have a relationship with our son altogether. I haven’t mentioned any of this to Gladys, but I’m sure she’d be heartbroken. She truly loves our son and he loves her. What should I do? -- Caught Between Two MILs Dear Caught: Shame on your motherin-law for being so jealous and bitter that she would interfere in your child-rearing decisions and prevent your son from having a loving relationship with Gladys. We hope your husband has the gumption to tell his mother that these are not her decisions to make, and that if she cannot accept your child’s relationship with Gladys, she could benefit from counseling. Enough already. Dear Annie: My 21-year-old daughter, like many of her peers, has spent a lot of time wishing she were thinner, taller, smarter, more attractive, etc. She is now in college, studying nursing. For one of her classes, she spent time looking at photos of birth defects. Afterward she called me to say, “From now on, I want to wake up every day being thankful that God made me just the way I am.” I do not believe defects are inflicted arbitrarily by a capricious God on an unlucky few, but I am glad that my “normal” daughter finally understands how fortunate she is to be just the way she is. -- Glad Dad Dear Dad: Thanks to relentless media pressure to be more physically attractive according to whatever standards are current, it is difficult for both men and women to feel satisfied with their appearance. We are glad your daughter found a way to accept herself as is. (And we’ll skip wishing to be “smarter,” which can often be achieved through education and experience, and which has nothing to do with physical appearance.) Rodgers, Arthur Alonzo July 16, 1936 - August 8, 2015 It is with great sadness that the family of Art announces his passing on August 8, 2015 in Kamloops, BC. Art was born in Twillingate, Newfoundland on July 16, 1936. His Canadian Forces service took him to many places around the world with Kamloops being his last post where he settled to raise his family. He retired from the Canadian Forces as a Sergeant for his 22 years of devoted service. His transition from Military Service into Provincial Corrections took him to Maple Ridge where he met and married his 2nd wife Bonnie. They retired in Cranbrook, BC. where many wonderful years were spent traveling across Canada and the USA. Art loved to play pool, crib, chess and enjoyed his trips to the casino. He also enjoyed watching sports with a particular love for hockey, football and baseball. Dad was also a master craftsman with creating cabinets and renovating houses. His proudest accomplishment was designing the plan for their last home built in Cranbrook. He will be fondly remembered for whistling a tune, his quick humour, his story telling of his childhood and whipping up the tastiest meals. Dad was happy to have his ever faithful feline companion, Callie by his side throughout his journey.   Art was predeceased by his wife Bonnie on May 4, 2015. He is survived by his children; Scott, Doug (Janice), Marie, Ron and 2 step children Leslie and Paul. He was the loving Grandfather to Kaylee, Tyler, Kelsie, Jessica, Jamie and Great Grandson, Deklin. He is survived by his Sister Mary of Toronto, Ontario, Sister Marie and Brother Cyril both of Corner Brook, Newfoundland. He cherished the memories of all of his extended family members and friends. Each memory now becomes a treasure. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Forever in our hearts Dadâ&#x20AC;?
