Safe antiobiotic use Antibiotics are a powerful tool that cuts both ways. Their appropriate use saves lives and promotes health while their overuse has created superbugs that are resistant to all antibiotics. Sometimes even the best use of antibiotics creates havoc by altering the gut flora causing a cascade of microbial and digestive problems that trade one problem for another. These side effects are particularly common in people who use antibiotics frequently or need long term antibiotics. Over time, the drug kills not only the bug causing the disease but also the healthy bacteria that colonize our bodies, called probiotics. It might come as a surprise to learn that there are about 100 trillion microbes that call our bodies home. To put this in perspective, there are only about 10 trillion cells that make up the human body. If put all in one place, 100 trillion microbes would make a mass the size of a football and weigh about 3 pounds. These myriad of organisms help us digest food, produce vitamins, help regulate the immune system and are key elements of how we exchange information with our environment. We couldn’t live without them. When these essential microbes become imbalanced life gets bumpy

with everything from asthma to skin conditions, diarrhea and digestive problems, achy joints, fatigue, concentration problems and many, many other symptoms. The good news is that with a little help, the body can recover. It is widely understood that using a probiotic supplement during and after taking antibiotics can help ease the side effects of antibiotics. What is less commonly appreciated is the important role of yeast and fungi. When antibiotics kill the beneficial bacteria the most common organism to flourish is the yeast Candida albicans. This organism produces endoand exotoxins that irritate the body and cause many of the side effects of antibiotics. Stopping the overgrowth of yeast is just as important as replacing the beneficial bacteria killed by the antibiotics. The most effective way to do this is with 10 undecenoic acid, an extract from the castor bean. This molecule stops yeast from reproducing. Over time, the yeast population dies and with the proper use of a probiotic the healthy organisms are able to re-establish themselves creating a healthy environment. If you need to use antibiotics, be sure to use both a probiotic and an anti fungal like 10 undecenoid acid.

TOM FLETCHER Black Press Forests Minister Steve Thomson called for public assistance Monday to identify those responsible for careless wildfire starts, or unauthorized intrusions into evacuation areas and restricted airspace. The B.C. Wildfire Service had to ground eight helicopters and three fixed-wing aircraft for three hours while battling fires around Oliver Sunday, due to an unauthorized drone flying in the area. Thomson was at Oliver airport when crews were called back from efforts to contain the Testalinden Creek and Wilson’s Mountain Road fires that threaten the community. “You could really see the frustration of the pilots and our wildfire team,” Thomson said. “Ticked off would probably be too mild a term to talk about their reaction. It’s really something that is just not acceptable.” Despite the interruption, the B.C. Wildfire Service estimated the Testalinden Creek fire south of Oliver to be 40 per cent contained, and the Wilson’s Mountain Road fire just north of Oliver was 70 per cent contained as of Monday. Reports of a video showing a smoker igniting the volatile fire west of Rock Creek have not been confirmed, Thomson said. He asked for anyone with video or other evidence of careless smoking or hazardous activity to contact their local police or the B.C. Wildfire Service (1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on mobile). The Rock Creek fire remained unconfined at about 3,750 hectares as of August 17, and had destroyed 30 homes. Chief fire information officer Kevin Skrepnek said the fire has not spread significantly since it was reported last week, but with hot days ahead that could change. There have been 292,000 hectares burned and $207 million spent so far this year, almost the same as this time last summer.

Kootenays now on Level 3 drought

SUBMITTED With the weather expected to remain warm and dry, the provincial government has announced a Level 3 drought rating for the Kootenays and is urging us to reduce water consumption. Level 3 drought conditions call for voluntary water-use reductions of an additional 20 per cent beyond Level 2 conservation levels (30 per cent overall) from all municipal, agricultural and indus-

trial users. In a prepared statement, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations said it expects this region could experience significant water supply shortages. Ministry staff are monitoring river levels and ecosystems, and may upgrade the drought level if the weather continues to have a negative effect on stream flows and water supply. Although residen-

tial, agricultural and industrial users within municipalities and regional districts backed by reservoir storage are less vulnerable to water supply shortages than water users served by smaller water systems from streams, lakes and wells, all water users are encouraged to observe local water conservation bylaws to prolong water supplies. Water users are also encouraged to ensure that water intakes are

screened to prevent fish from being pulled into water systems as water levels drop. Low water levels can impede the passage of salmon to spawning grounds, increase susceptibility to disease, or cause stranding or death due to low oxygen and high water temperatures. Level 4 drought conditions, the highest rating, are determined by factors including regional stream flows, water storage capacity, ecological con-

SUBMITTED The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is noting an increase in telephone scams where the caller claims to be from the CRA but is not, and is asking Canadians to beware—these calls are fraudulent and could result in identity and financial theft. Some recent telephone scams involve threatening taxpayers or using aggressive and forceful language to scare them into paying fictitious debt to the CRA. Victims receive a phone call from a person claiming to work for the CRA and saying that taxes are owed. The caller requests immediate payment by credit card or convinces the victims to purchase a prepaid credit card and to call back immediately with the information. The taxpayer is often threatened with court charges, jail or deportation. If you get such a call, hang up and report it to the Canadian AntiFraud Centre. These types of communication are not from the CRA. When the CRA calls you, it has established procedures in place to make sure your

The number for businessrelated calls is 1-800959-5525. The number for calls about individual concerns is 1-800-959-8281. To help you identify possible scams, use the following guidelines: The CRA: • never requests prepaid credit cards; never asks for information about your passport, health card, or driver’s licence; • never shares your taxpayer information with another person, unless you have provided the appropriate authorization; and • never leaves personal information on your answering machine or asks you to leave a message containing your personal information on an answering machi ne. When in doubt, ask yourself the following: • Is there a reason that the CRA may be calling? Do I have a tax balance outstanding? • Is the requester asking for information I would not

include with my tax return? • Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me? • How did the requester get my email address or telephone number? • Am I confident I know who is asking for the information? The CRA has strong practices to protect the confidentiality of taxpayer information. The confidence and trust that individuals and businesses have in the CRA is a cornerstone of Canada’s tax system. Late summer staycations

Kootenay News Advertiser Monday, August 24, 2015

SUBMITTED The tourism sector is having an excellent year and it’s not surprising that many British Columbians are choosing to staycation and enjoy the spectacular tourism experiences in their own backyards. Staycations can give British Columbians a chance to enjoy the province’s worldclass travel experiences first-hand. The low Canadian dollar adds incentive for British Columbians to get out and explore their community, region and province. Staycations are also a good way to keep your vacation dollars circulating in B.C.’s economy. By visiting regional events and venues, you’re not only supporting local businesses, you’re also helping sustain important jobs in the tourism sector. Tourism is a key sector in the BC Jobs Plan

and an important economic driver in the province. B.C.’s tourism sector is strong and growing. In 2014, 4.65 million international travellers came to B.C., a 5.3% increase and nearly a quarter million more visitors than we welcomed in 2013. As well, the tourism sector employed 132,000 British Columbians, almost 1 in every 15 jobs in B.C. in 2013. The sector has more than 19,200 tourismrelated businesses and paid out $4.5 billion in wages and salaries to tourism workers in 2013 - an increase of 3.8% over the year before. If a Kootenay Rockies staycation is on your radar, here are some fun activities you can enjoy: • Canoeing on Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park. • Visit a ghost town at Sandon, B.C. near New Denver.

British Columbia where there is an endless variety of ways to vacation. Why not consider a staycation and explore this fantastic place we call home. Whether you want to hike or camp in our beautiful parks, eat at world-class restaurants, take a step back in time at a museum, learn about First Nations culture or just enjoy the views - our province has it all. I encourage everyone to visit any one of the six diverse regions that make our province so special,” said Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour. Quick Facts: • The Province invests about $90 million annually in the tourism sector. • British Columbia posted a 5.3% increase in international over-

night visitors for 2014, surpassing the 3.2% increase in arrivals to Canada as a whole. • International tourist visits to B.C.

climbed again in May 2015, marking a fifth gain in six months. • These gains support the more than 19,200 tourism-related businesses in B.C.

• 2013, the tourism industry generated $13.9 billion in revenue, an increase of 3.6% from 2012 and a 44% increase since 2003.

East Kootenay groups receive community gaming grants SUBMITTED Six arts and culture and sports groups in the East Kootenay are receiving $82,325 from the province’s Community Gaming Grants program. • Cranbrook Community Theatre Society: $10,000; • Symphony of the Kootenays Association: $15,000; • Special Olympics B.C. Society (Kimberley/Cranbrook): $4,200 • Fernie Ghostriders

Junior Hockey Club: $15,000; • Fernie Alpine Ski Team: $21,500; • Kimberley Alpine Team Society: $16,625. “From theatre and music to amateur athletics, our government is proud to support these groups and the people who participate in them,” Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett said. “These grants help create opportunities for young people to become active in

organized sports and arts groups.” Every year, the provincial government approves $135 million in gaming grants that benefit more than 5,000 local non-profit organizations that serve communities throughout British Columbia. AUTO BODY REPAIR

The moment you hear metal crunch and glass shatter, everything in your day changes. Depending on the damage, whether a minor “fender bender” or a full blown collision, if you have not pre-selected a collision autobody shop to repair your car, you have a bit of work ahead of you. Pre-selecting an autobody collision shop will save time, reduce stress and lesson aggravation at the time of an accident. Choose a shop that’s clean, neat and tidy, with the proper tools and equipment to handle your vehicle. If you have a large vehicle, take it to a large truck center. If you have a light truck or car, take it to a light truck and car center. With the diversity in today’s vehicles, comes the diversity of tools needed to work with them. Ensure your chosen shop has the proper equipment to work with your particular type of vehicle, whether it be a car, truck, minivan, SUV or larger vehicle. Ask about warranties and other guarantees on pricing, scheduling and the amount of time your car will be in the shop. Signal Collision cares about our friends and customers, that is why we have invested in state of the art equipment and training to fix everything from the new aluminum F150 to the special bronze welding on a lot of today’s new vehicles. “Let me light up your life”

It’s very important to have maintenance work done on these heating systems once a year: forced air systems, hot water systems, heat pumps, electric baseboard heaters, auxiliary components, etc. As for hot-air generators and gas boilers, these should be checked every two years. A qualified technician will ensure the work is carried out in a professional manner. Depending on the appliance, the technician will verify the belt tensions, clean ducts, insulate hot-air ducts, grease certain components, maintain coils, etc. In other words, the technician will carry out all the maintenance work necessary to ensure your comfort, no matter what the season, for many years to come.

Curiosity, memory, ease of communication, dynamism and patience are some of the qualities necessary in a good hardware specialist.

has some bright ideas!

A heating technician installs and repairs air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, installs heat pumps and humidifiers, replaces furnaces and repairs air exchangers, compressors and all types of motors.

All commercial and Residential Air Systems, & Furnace Replacements

Whether he works locally or in DIY centre, the hardware professional is always called on to carry out other tasks related to his job. He can take care of the reception of merchandise, stock control, ordering, and estimating costs of projects.

LET ME LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE Your lighting consultant

It’s summer and it’s sweltering hot out there. So why may you ask are we talking about the trade of heating technician? Because a heating technician takes care of many more things than just heating systems.

All these appliances are useful to consumers especially when they are properly installed and maintained by a heating technician. For example, a heat pump can reduce an electricity or oil bill by 30 to 40%. Having an air exchanger installed eliminates humidity in the summer and maintains better air circulation in the winter when all the windows are closed. A humidifier protects woodwork during the winter and reduces allergies in the summer.

His training has allowed him to deepen his knowledge of carpentry, general principals of home ventilation and heating, basic notions of electricity, lighting systems and the installation of plumbing devices. He has mastered the methods of calculating different quantities of materials, the characteristics of doors and windows, the reading of plans and the utilization of garden and landscaping products.

A lighting consultant, who works in decorating boutiques, specialized lighting shops as well as in department stores, can help you choose products according to the layout of the various rooms in the home and take into account the colour of the walls, the window dressings, the arrangement of the furniture and the floor coverings. For example, a torchiere floor lamp will make your living room more warm and intimate, while the installation of a dimmer in the dining room will allow for the adjustment of the light to the desired intensity. Bedside lamps, reading lamps or table lamps with a nice shade, ceiling lights, fluorescent lights, recessed lights, halogen, incandescent bulbs, or LED chandeliers or wall lights, your specialist will tell you all about the different types of lighting, their effect on the decor and, a not unimportant factor, their energy efficiency. Apart from the initial cost of purchase, the electricity consumption of your new appliance should also be taken into consideration. A good specialist will be able to suggest products to you which correspond to your needs and will, at the same time, help you save energy. Like all people working in retail sales, being sociable, dynamic and self-confident as well as having the capacity to listen so as to really understand customers’ needs and an ease of communication, are important assets for a lighting consultant. Having been in the business for over 20 years working on various project including the Fairmont timeshares, condos. The Fernie Ski hill, hotels, restaurants and homes throughout the East Kootenays. My commitment has been focused on bringing style, affordable products and quality service to all my customers needs. Whether it be one or two rooms in your home or a new build. I take delight in offering exceptional customer service and strive to exceed your expectations!!

The Starlite Campaign runs from November 27 – January 31, 2016 and has set a fundraising goal is to raise $145,000 and light 17 large stars ($5,000 per star) and 24 small stars ($2,500

SUBMITTED It’s truly amazing to think that even when hockey rinks don’t have ice surfaces down, organizations like the Key City Old-timers Hockey Club are still busy with activities with their 120+ members.

The recreation hockey league (35+ men’s) recently hosted their annual golf tournament. The tourney always takes a charitable spin and this year the members unanimously selected EKFH’s Starlite Campaign to be

The Cranbrook and District Kennel Club was inaugurated in 1970 as the Cranbrook Kennel Club by an enthusiastic group of purebred dog fanciers in the community. Around 1985 the club changed its name to the Cranbrook and District Kennel Club to encompass the area trading population around Cranbrook. The first sanctioned Canadian Kennel Club Dog Shows were held in 1973. These Championship Shows and Trials are customarily held the last weekend in August. In 2015, CDKC will be holding its 42nd consecutive Championship Dog Shows in the community. As well as the Conformation Shows there will be performance events taking place with Obedience and Rally Obedience Trials. There will also be agility demonstrations. In the past only registered purebred dogs could compete in all these events. Today, non-purebred dogs can compete in all the performance events, Obedience and Rally Obedience with Confirmation being the only event requiring registered purebred dogs. The Club still has a fairly active membership that participates in conformation, obedience, rally obedience and agility. In the past the Club held Tracking Trials, Retriever Field Trials and Pointing Dog Trials when there were members that had these types of trained dogs and wanted a venue for them to participate.
