Tuesday was somewhat disappointing for Tom Ferris. As the owner of Ferris’ Oyster Bar, telling his customers he isn’t serving raw west coast oysters until further notice wasn’t easy, but it’s something that had to be done due to ongoing concerns about food poisoning. “Of course we’re disappointed, but this is a health issue,” said Ferris, adding so far his customers don’t seem shocked about the temporary halt on serving raw oysters. “It doesn’t matter what the season is, you’re taking your chances, but there has been too many cases now. We’re just taking proactive measures.” Earlier this week, the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority asked restaurants in the region to temporarily cook oysters harvested in B.C. before serving. Officials also said only oysters harvested outside of the province can be served. The ban comes in response to 31 people that became sick from eating raw B.C. oysters this summer, but officials suspect there are likely more cases that haven’t been reported. On Vancouver Island, there have been 15 cases during the summer months. No stats were available specifically for Victoria. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a naturally occurring bacterium

found in coastal waters that thrives when the weather warms. Since oysters are filter feeders, they take in the vibrio into their digestive track. Reports of illness generally increase during the summer months. The symptoms include watery diarrhea, cramps, vomiting, and fever, and can last up to a week. Dr. Murray Fyfe, medical health officer for Island Health, said there is no ban on restaurants selling raw oysters and shellfish in Victoria, nor is there an order to cook them. Instead, officials have been visiting restaurants that serve raw oysters and having discussions about the risks for vibrio illnesses. Restaurants have also been provided with a health warning poster to make sure customers are aware of the dangers. “A good portion of them (restaurants) decided they were not going to continue to sell the raw oysters. It was too much of a risk. The others have basically agreed to put the posters up and have a discussion with their customers to make sure they are aware of the risk,” said Fyfe, noting about two thirds of the cases of illness were related to restaurants and about one third were related to those who had harvested their own oysters from beaches. Genealogical Society traces family tree Kendra Wong Victoria News
When Monica Sheridan started looking into her family’s history, she never thought she would end up being related to a homicide victim in Portland, Oregon. The Victoria resident began looking into her family tree seven years ago after her father passed away. She was responsible for closing his estate and came across an old trailer full of family documents, papers and photographs. Her father was adopted when he was six years old and rarely spoke about his birth mother. But it was one picture in particular that fascinated Sheridan from the beginning. “It’s a beautiful picture from the 1920s. She was a beautiful woman. She’s sitting on a set of stairs with this far away look in her eyes,” said Sheridan, vice president of the Victoria Genealogical Society. “I’d never really thought of [my dad’s] birth parents . . . As soon as I looked into her eyes, I knew I had to know as much about her as I could learn.” The woman turned out to be her biological grandmother Ethel Anderson. Sheridan began looking into Anderson’s high school and college records, old newspaper articles and medical records and found out she was born in West Virginia in roughly 1903. She met her first husband in teacher’s college and had her first son in Ohio. Shortly after, they moved to California, where Anderson separated and had

struggled in life because of the damage that whole process did.” After a series of relationships, Anderson made her way to Portland, Oregon. But on Sept. 19, 1947, at the age of 42, she
was found beaten to death in a hotel. The man who killed her, Rutherford Beer, claimed she tried to steal his wallet. He was convicted of murdering her and spent nine years in jail. “It was hard to make it real to me that she was a real person. The more I’ve read since, it’s horrifying, to be beaten to death,” Sheridan said. “She started out with so much promise. She was very smart and because of something in her life, she just went down a very dark path and had such a tragic end because of it.” Sheridan has since visited her grandmother’s grave in Portland and shares her family story during talks in an attempt to memorialize Anderson. She is one of 283 people who are discovering their family tree through the Victoria Genealogical Society. Merv Scott, project director with the society, said genealogy is becoming increasingly popular in Victoria. “We didn’t start here. We came from some place else and there’s so many of us at a particular point in our life, we want to know where we came from,” said Scott, who has found many relatives in Scotland. The society is hosting its largest annual seminar, Creating Connections Through DNA on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at St. Aidan’s Church (3703 St. Aidan’s St.) The seminar includes five sessions and three speakers who will discuss using DNA to find family members. Since 2005, Miller said there’s been a big push to maintain the township’s sewer systems since the water that enters sewers will go to a waste water treatment plant in the future. The problem, he said, is that a lot of the water from inflow and infiltration (rainwater and water that enters the sewer through cracks) doesn’t need to be treated, but the township will still have to pay for it anyway. “When we get a wastewater treatment plant, municipalities pay for the flows that they send to the plant, so if we can lower that, our cost that will be charged back to the residents for wastewater

The condition of sanitary sewer pipes running beneath the homes of Esquimalt residents isn’t something that’s typically on a homeowner’s mind. But the township will soon be examining the condition of those pipes on private property toww gain a better understanding of how to manage the inflow and infiltration of water so less money is flushed down the toilet in the future. According to Jeff Miller, director of engineer and public works for Esquimalt, the township’s sanitary sewer collection system is composed of three main parts that are owned and maintained by the municipality, the CRD and homeowners (which own the

since 2005, and has decreased the sanitary flow by 15 per cent. But the township’s efforts during the past 10 years have been focused on the publicowned portion of the sanitary collection system. Now the focus will have to shift
to the pipes that are privately owned. Miller proposed an eight to 10-year program, noting the township will embark on an adventure of trying to eliminate cross connections and rehabilitate pipes on the private side. How those pipes should be rehabilitated and who pays for them is the question council will have to determine. “I can see the worry coming forward from residents because it is concerning,” said Coun. Meagen Brame, adding she can’t see the bill for repairs being a small chunk of change. Mayor Barb Desjardins agreed. “I think it’s really important for us to not only know what the cost is, but what the benefit is,” she said. “The dollars would be very helpful.” editor@vicnews.com

“It’s a very risky practice to harvest oysters at this time off a beach. It’s fine if they are going to be cooked. There’s a lot of nice ways to enjoy oysters.” Vibrio infections caused by eating raw oysters and shellfish are nothing new. According to Fyfe, the last big outbreak on the island was in 1997. Last year there were five cases reported. For those who still have a craving for raw oysters, Ferris is serving ones shipped in from Prince Edward
Island, along with cooked oysters. In the mean time, all he can do is wait until the temperatures cool and things get back to normal. “Vibrio has been with us for quite some time and so has red tide. In one form or another, we always have to deal with something when the weather is warm and this has been a particularly warm summer,” he said. “Just pick a month that ends with an r and it’ll be fine.” editor@vicnews.com
Toddler death case closed The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has closed its file on the 18-month-old toddler found dead in a Victoria hotel last month. On July 18 around 4 a.m., Victoria police were called to Hotel Zed on Douglas Street following a report of a woman screaming. There, they found Saam Zohrevand with no vital signs. Despite lengthy attempts at lifesaving measures, he was pronounced dead on scene. Microbiology findings showed Zohrevand had developed a lung infection and a type of meningitis. Both illnesses became severe over a short period of time. The investigation has since found no relationship between the death of the infant and the actions of officers involved. The office is responsible for conducting investigations into officer-related incidents of death or serious harm in order to determine whether an officer may have committed an offence.

Residents rally against development Pamela Roth Victoria News
Don Denton/Victoria News
Standing on Mason Street, from left, Charles Joerin, Lynn Martin, Julia Ford and Tristan Trotter have all signed a petition that outlines ongoing concerns with a redevelopment project for the street. Joerin, Ford and Trotter are all residents while Martin is a frequent visitor to the local shops. The corner at the rear left will be redeveloped into a commercial/housing complex.
More than 600 signatures have been collected from residents of the North Park neighbourhood as part of a petition against a proposed development for the St. Andrew’s School site. Vancouver developer BlueSky Properties eyed up the site for a $70-million mixeduse development when the school shut its doors in 2013. Bordered by Pandora Avenue, Mason and Vancouver streets, the development calls for a six-storey building with 210 rental units in two buildings and a large ground-floor commercial space that could include an urban grocer, bank and smaller retail stores. The development, however, hasn’t sat well with area residents since the get go. When Charles Joerin with the North Park Neighbourhood Association first heard about the project his

heart sank to his toes. According to Joerin, who’s lived in the community for 20 years, the shopping would bring more traffic into the neighbourhood, creating congestion, and the tower would overshadow the neighbouring Mason Street Farm – a significant provider of food for local restaurants. He also wasn’t happy with the lack of green space and the way the developer approached the community. “The developer came in and told us this is the way it’s going to be. There wasn’t any dialogue,” said Joerin, who felt a bit better once he heard the developer was making some adjustments to the project. In order to address the community’s
concerns, the developer has since made a few changes, such as reducing the height of one of the buildings from six to four stories along Mason Street and addressing traffic concerns. Last year, Victoria council advanced the application subject to a number of conditions, which the developer says have since been addressed in the revised plans. Despite some community input during the last two years, Joerin said it’s not enough to make all the residents happy. “I began to see it was more like re-arranging the deck of chairs on the Titanic. They haven’t really solved the massing issue and traffic,” he said, adding a new grocery store could suck the life out of businesses already
in the area. “I feel it’s kind of a big ugly bully moving into town and flexing their muscles.” The signatures collected for the petition will be presented to city council next Thursday during a public hearing on the matter. Recognizing the site needs to be developed, Joerin said the neighbourhood doesn’t want to stand still and remain living in the past. He just hopes that whatever development is approved will be for the good of the community. “I’d like to see something that makes a good transition from the downtown core into a nice quiet residential neighbourhood,” he said. “This does not achieve that.” editor@victnews.com

What’s underneath your home? Purchasing a new home is an exciting time. It’s a feeling of accomplishment, freedom from landlords or parents, and a tremendous sense of pride knowing you have your own property to do whatever you want with – like painting the walls bright pink or yellow. But one thing that is often overlooked when purchasing a property is what lies beneath the ground. Many homeowners are unaware that they are responsible for certain pipes leading to their home for water and sewage. That means if those pipes need to be repaired, you’re likely on the hook to pick up the tab. Residents of Esquimalt will soon get to know their pipes well as the township begins the tedious task of examining all the sewer lines leading to private property. It’s all in an effort to gain a better understanding of how to manage the inflow and infiltration of water before the arrival of a waste water treatment plant. Since 2005, the township has been very active in managing inflow and infiltration. (Inflow is rainwater that enters the sewer through cross connections such as catch basins and roof drains. Infiltration is water that enters the sewer through cracks and leaky joints.) Pump stations have been upgraded, catch basins were disconnected and manholes have been separated, decreasing sanitary flow by 15 per cent. The smaller amount of flows to the waste water treatment plant means more money saved by the township. A lot of the water from inflow and infiltration doesn’t need to be treated anyway. But now officials with the township have the task of focusing on the privately-owned portion of the sanitary collection system, which will no doubt be a hefty task. There will likely be several pipes that will need to be repaired, and the cost could be a tough bill to swallow. Who picks up the tab is something council will have the difficult task of determining. Southern B.C. to lead growth B.C.’s economy will grow at a “modest” 2.7 per cent this year, then accelerate above three per cent as major projects in northern B.C. get going in late 2016, according to the latest forecast by Central 1 Credit Union. Low interest rates, a low dollar and recovering demand in the U.S. will help the Vancouver and southern B.C region’s export and service industries most this year, said Bryan Yu, senior economist with the trade association for B.C. credit unions. Manufacturing, tourism, TV and film and agriculture are expected to lead the way. Slow global demand, particularly from China, is expected to dampen growth in northern B.C. and the Kootenays, where mining and resources are key drivers. “Northern B.C. is poised to grow at a faster rate in late 2016 onwards with the start of one liquefied natural gas terminal and pipeline, the Site C dam and other major projects,” Yu said. While B.C. residents working in the oil sands are at greater risk, low oil prices are generally positive for the B.C. economy, with lower costs for businesses and consumers. Reunion planned for Canadian Girls in Training program Kendra Wong Victoria News
Patricia Whiteley has a lot to celebrate. The James Bay resident is planning
a celebration for the Canadian Girls In Training program (CGIT) that has been 100 years in the making. The national church-
based program was developed in 1915 by the YWCA and leaders from Anglican, Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches. The
program is for girls aged 12 to 17 to participate in activities that teach leadership skills and create wellrounded girls. In the summer there were
also camps to attend. Whiteley joined the program when she was 12 years old. “I wasn’t going to go to CGIT. My father said I should go and

She is so funny and kind” Tara was also able to help Margaret Ruiter find the perfect home for her daughter’s family when they moved to the Island. “Tara was very patient and showed us many homes without ever making us feel any pressure to purchase. We did find the home for our kids and Tara made the whole purchase process very easy and stress free, facilitating responses to any questions that came up from our lawyer and mortgager. James Bay resident Lesley Crassweller is planning on attending the centennial celebration. “I’ve been able to go to various provinces and meet people that you wouldn’t meet otherwise. I’m just waiting to see who’s coming and what’s happened since the last one,” said Crassweller who was involved with the program for 45 years. “It’s so exciting to see these women just as happy now as they were then. There will be lots of singing and laughing.” The local luncheon takes place on Sunday, Sept. 27 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the First Metropolitan United Church (932 Balmoral Rd). Registration is $15 and can be sent to the church. Kendra.wong@vicnews.com

It’s a scene that any person would dread seeing. An accident involving a motorcyclist on a highway seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The victim lying sprawled out along the ground, unconscious. Witnesses gathered around unsure of what to do. The scene was all too real for Saanich’s Cynthia Reid. Reid was on her way to a dog show in Calgary on July 22, when she came across a motorcycle accident roughly 40 minutes outside Lake Louise on Highway 93. “I rolled down my window and just said ‘Do you need my help?’ and when they said yes, I sprang out of the car and opened up his leather jacket. When I looked at him, I thought holy moly, and I just thought I better get to work right now because he’s dying now,” she said. Reid sprang into action. “I ran over and they had just taken off his helmet and he was laying on his side. He was a big heavy set man,” said Reid, who worked as a critical care nurse for more than 25 years. “He was cyanotic to the point that I looked at him and he was navy blue . . . he was dying before my eyes.” Reid established the man had a heart rate, but wasn’t breathing, so she tried to open his airway. She turned him on his back, praying he didn’t have any spinal injuries, and stuck a pen on one side of his teeth and a six-inch leather knife sheath that she takes

Roughly 15 to 30 minutes after she opened his airway, the man eventually came to. Within half an hour RCMP arrived on scene, followed by Lake Louise Fire and Rescue and an air ambulance. “He was semiconscious and doing things that I asked him like squeeze my fingers, move his feet. I tried to keep him still. Gradually he woke up,” she said. The man was Don Brown and he was transported to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, where Reid visited him following the accident. He was on a two-
week ride with three other couples through southern B.C., and 24 hours from home when he was in the accident. His wife Maggie said the driver in front of Don didn’t see him signalling to turn left. He hit the truck and flipped over the handle bars. He ruptured his liver which caused abdominal bleeding, had a brain bleed, a broken collarbone and nine broken ribs. “I was crying I was so thankful, I just kept hugging her,” said Maggie. “It was this phenomenal act of bravery and just to have her quick thinking and using whatever she had to pry open my husband’s mouth is unreal. She’s his
guardian angel. He breaks down whenever he hears Cynthia’s name.” Brown is now recovering at home, but still doesn’t remember the accident. Maggie hopes to nominate Reid for a medal of bravery. But Reid was quick to note, she was just in the right place at the right time. “Nursing becomes part of you, wherever you go, even though you don’t want to hear is there any medical personnel on board?” she said. “This one just went well. Timing is everything. He’s here and he will ride again, but I’d never been so glad to see someone dressed properly.” kendra.wong@vicnews.com

Visit the Outlander gallery at DrivewayCanada.ca
Aggressive Outlander bucks power trend Zack Spencer – The Mitsubishi Outlander is a bit of an anomaly in the compact utility market. While most manufacturers sell 4-cylinder or turbocharged 4-cylinder versions in great number, it’s the V6 equipped Outlander that is the best seller in Canada. It might be that the previous V6 version was more refined, quieter and had a conventional 6-speed automatic transmission, compared to the loud, lacklustre 4-cylinder model. For 2016 Mitsubishi wants to build on the success of the V6 model and try to sell more 4-cylinder versions by paying attention to styling, refinement and drivability. Looks The 2016 model comes with a new front grille, front bumper, even available LED headlamps and tail lamps. Mitsubishi might be accused of borrowing from the recent Lexus front design; the bold chrome accents look similar to the Lexus Spindle grille. The top GT trim is the one that gets standard 18-inch wheels but they can be ordered on lower trim levels as an option. Same for the power tailgate, it is reserved for the top V6 GT trim. Inside Unlike the 4-cylinder Nissan Rogue, the Outlander only offers seating for seven passengers in the V6 models, so the Kia Sorento is the closest competitor. The updates to the back seats include easier to fold second row of seats, the third row is still best for small children and shorter trips. The display audio screen is updated to provide redundant tabs and switches around the outside; this treatment has also been used on navigationequipped cars. 4-cylinder models get a useful storage area under the rear cargo floor. Drive Another reason Canadians opted for V6 models in the previous version is the better driving experience. There is new acoustic glass to remove road and wind noise, more insulation between the cabin and the engine compartment and attention paid to the
continuously variable transmission (CVT). Mitsubishi claims the updates reduce friction and the wider range of available ratios helps this vehicle make a run to 100km/h one second faster than the previous 4-cylinder. The 166hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engine has been carried over but the improvements have transformed this Outlander. It has gone from a rough and ready vehicle to a refined, quiet place to spend time. The 224hp 3.0L V6 is still the one to get if you want to tow up to 3500lbs. and the inclusion of a 6-speed automatic makes driving more predictable but this version felt heavier and didn’t handle as well as the 4-cylinder. Verdict The 2016 Outlander starts $25,998 for a FWD 4-cylinder model. The base 4-cylinder AWD starts at $27,998. All V6 Outlanders come with AWD and the starting price is $31,198. The most expensive GT is $38,498. Mitsubishi is introducing new trim for the 2016 model that includes high-end features found in the V6 in a 4-cylinder. It is the ES Touring with a power sunroof, 18-inch wheels, display audio, satellite radio; it starts just under $30,000. The Outlander competes with a field of small utility vehicles but the V6 is what sets it apart; that and the 10-year warranty. The Lowdown Power: 166hphp 2.4L or 224hp 3.0L V6 Fill-up: 9.9L/8.1L/100km (city/highway 4-cylinder) Sticker price: $25,998-$38,498 Write to zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

BacktoSchool Making the Grade!
Back to school means back to the PAC Jacob Zinn Black Press
Do you have a child in elementary, middle or high school? If so, you’re a member of the school’s PAC, whether you know it or not. “Often times, you’ll hear parents go, ‘Oh, I’m not on PAC,’” said Audrey Smith, president of the Victoria Confederation of PACs. “Well, they are, they just don’t engage at PAC meetings.” Having a child in the local school system is the only requirement to join a PAC, short for Parent Advisory Council. Every school has a PAC, which works to connect parents with teachers, the board of education and other groups that have a stake in the local school system. “The PAC is an advisory group to the rest of the education partners at the school, advising them on all things to do with our children: Educational, social, structural,” said Smith. “Parents advocate for the best things for their kids at the school level.” Smith said the issues that PACs can discuss are limitless, including such matters as class composition, nutrition, lunch times, after school sports and school clubs. Everything is on the table and PACs allow parents to influence how their children experience different things at their schools. “The opinions of parents are full spectrum on anything you can think of educationally,” she said. “Individual parents will have their ideas, different groups of parents will have their opinions and philosophies. All of that comes together at the PAC, and then the parents will debate and discuss and perhaps survey their school community to determine how they will proceed.

Audrey Smith, president of the Victoria Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils, is gearing up for the new school year and encouraging parents to be active with their schools’ PAC. “If there are parents who have an expertise in something, they’ll usually come through the PAC and get other like minded parents aware of what’s happening and they can get behind it.” When a PAC wants to make a change to their school, that’s where the VCPAC comes in. The VCPAC – the district PAC for Greater Victoria – represents local PACs at the district level and primarily advises the school board on “any matter relating to education in the school district.” “We’re not a political group, although we do interact with political groups like the board of education,” said
Smith, adding that the group is made up of nine executive members who are elected annually. She noted that school PACs can go straight to the district themselves if they’d like, referencing one school that successfully lobbied for a temporary change of learning environment while construction took place at the school. “One school was having asbestos issues when they were having seismic upgrades and they didn’t like the way it was done at that time, so they came up with a petition to get the government to make a ruling across the province that when construction or seismic upgrades are being done that the kids not be present,” she said. “That came out of parents being active and vocal about how they wanted things done for their kids.” Smith said the role of PACs isn’t just beneficial for parents, noting the schools appreciate the input from parents and the ability to gauge them on different issues. “The more parents that know what’s happening at the school, the more students participate,” she said. “It’s the PAC’s job to get the parents engaged to know what’s going on at the school.” With the start of the next school year just around the corner, Smith said many schools have open houses prior to the first day of school, which can be a great opportunity to communicate with the school’s PAC if the group is present. “Parents are the experts for their kids,” said Smith, “[and] being involved and staying involved is really important for the success of their kids.” For more information about VCPAC or your school’s PAC, visit vcpac.ca. editor@vicnews.com

BacktoSchool Making the Grade!
Eating right starts at home Jacob Zinn Black Press
Getting kids to make healthy choices can be challenging, especially during the school year when kids may eat around the healthiest part of their of their brown bag lunches. So how can you keep your kid from leaving the apple you packed on the teacher’s desk? It all starts at home, says Justine Wardle, a community nutritionist. “Parents encounter a variety of challenges – sometimes with younger children, there are issues around introducing new foods and difficulty getting them to try new foods,” said Wardle. “In a school environment, I’d say it’s challenges around packing lunches, packing healthy foods that parents know their kids will eat.” As a community nutritionist, Wardle works primarily with women, children and families on a range of health issues, including proper diet for kids and promoting healthy eating.

While many schools run their own healthy food programs, parents still rely on the help of nutritionists to ensure they pack a balanced meal for their kids. Wardle said getting kids to eat healthy foods is a process, and it’s important not to force kids to eat foods they don’t want to. In her experience, doing so has an adverse effect on developing healthy habits. “When parents pressure their child, they tend to be resistive, whereas when food’s offered in a neutral environment, children more naturally want to try it,” she said, noting repetition is often the key to healthy eating. “If parents offer healthy choices in the home and regular meals at set times, and they sit down with their child and role model, kids will decide if they want to eat the healthy option. Sometimes it will take 20 to 30 times of exposure to a new food before a child will eat it, but with repeated exposure, the child will eventually want to try it.” Wardle recommends offering familiar dishes along with one
new food at a time, so as not to overwhelm children with unfamiliar foods. Getting kids involved in preparing lunches is beneficial to opening them up to new foods. “Any time you involve your child in preparing foods at home or grocery shopping, you’re more likely to get their interest,” she said. “When kids help prepare their lunches, they’re more likely to eat them.” Make sure three of the four food groups are covered in your child’s lunch, keep warm or cold foods in an insulated lunchbox and include healthy beverages. Ultimately, the biggest factor in getting kids to eat healthy is seeing what their parents eat. “It goes back to being a good role model for healthy eating. Parents who sit down with their children and enjoy even just one meal a day, that can set a really good example,” she said. For more information about eating healthy, see Canada’s Food Guide at hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/ food-guide-aliment/index-eng. php.

Both contributed funds and grants/bonds can be invested in stocks, bonds, GICs, mutual funds and other professionally managed investments, depending on the type of institution you open the plan with; you’re not simply placing funds into a “savings” account. “The growth on the contributed funds compounds on a tax-deferred basis and can often be withdrawn with very little tax during the lean income years that many students experience during school,” Stephen notes. “Tax-deferred growth and a potentially low
student tax rates means more funds for books, tuition, and living expenses.” Plans can be contributed to for up to 31 years and can remain open for up to 36 years, which also makes RESPs a great vehicle for mature students as well as those looking to attend post-secondary directly out of high school, he says. Even better, with the exception of family plans, “anyone can contribute to a plan for the benefit of a future student. This can include parents, grandparents, or anyone else involved in the success of the child.” Plans aren’t only for students
destined for university, he points out, noting that “Qualifying Educational Programs” are flexible and can include programs as little as three weeks long. Contributions that are not ultimately used by a child can be withdrawn by the original subscriber with some conditions. The bottom line? “Don’t wait!” Stephen advises. “Start a monthly contribution plan with whatever you can afford and increase it later as cash flow permits. Most institutions will allow you to contribute as little as $25 per month.” editor@vicnews.com

Technically, the Uptown shopping centre and surrounding area fall in the Mount View and Colquitz neighbourhoods but time changes everything, and the name Uptown seems here to stick. “We’re finding people consider this region the Uptown region, and the centrality of Uptown Place is so much that I would personally prefer to call this spot Central City,” said Tri Eagle marketing development co-ordinator Oliver Tennant. “The reason is, we have buyers who have come specifically to this area for its equidistant commutes from all parts of Greater Victoria” Phase two of the two-building development is set for a mid to late August move-in date with 27 of the 38 suites sold. All that’s left are two bedroom, two bathroom suites ranging from $370,000 to $440,000, depending on size and layout. The expansive, underground bike storage of the first building is already full, showcasing the building’s immediate access to the Lochside and Galloping Goose trails. Uptown Place is a joint development between the Jawl brothers, Mike and Dave, and the Lee family that runs Tri Eagle. The initial concern for nearly all potential buyers at Uptown Place is the noise pollution, as the pair of four-storey buildings stand over the Patricia Bay Highway (Highway

Yes, the eastside of the building overlooks the Pat Bay Highway and Saanich Fire Department. But when sitting, only the views of Swan Lake and Mount Douglas Park show up in the horizon. Traffic noise on the east side is also limited to a surprising dim by natural barriers such as trees and shrubs, as well as a five-latch vapour barrier and heavily glazed window on the door to the balcony. “It’s more view than anything,” said Tennant. “[The highway] is a sound creator but we’ve done a lot to work around it to

maximize the view. There’s a water feature to create a natural background noise and among the environmental noise barriers are five rain gardens with native plants.” There’s also considerable noise reduction in the walls and floors, Tennant said. The southward views from the fourth (top) floor include downtown, the ocean and the Olympic mountains. Uptown Place was just nominated by the Victoria Residential Builders Association for three CARE awards (Construction Achievements and Renovations of Excellence),
in the categories of Best Condominium Project or Mixed-Use Development, Best Landscape and Best Sales Centre/ Showroom. The Gold winners will be announced at the CARE Awards gala on Oct. 17 at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. The public will select the winner of the People’s Choice Award from finalist photos displayed at Hillside Centre Sept. 4-18, and online at careawards. ca from Aug. 24 to Sept. 27. Cougars begin training camp Fresh off their summer break, the defending South Island Division champions Victoria Cougars will open training camp on Friday at the Archie Browning Sports Centre in Esquimalt. Due to being overage, several familiar names will not be present, most noticeably their top four scorers from last year — Sam McMullen (99 points), Michael Fretz (80 points), Wade Johnson (73 points), and Robert Zadra (56 points). Also not present this year is Howard Howden and Jake Stolz, who last year played out their junior eligibility as well. Grant Payne, who posted
a league-high 25 wins and four shutouts during the regular season, will be stopping pucks for the University of Northern Colorado in September. Many positions are up for grabs. “There are openings at every position and we will be looking for players who are great teammates and great citizens as well as being talented,” said Cougars president Gary Boyer. “It should be considered an honour and a privilege for any player to pull on the Cougars jersey.” Despite the exodus of several key players, Boyer said Victoria
still has a strong nucleus to build around. However, it will take several more hard-working, self-motivated players to make up another championship calibre team. “It will be an exciting year for our club as we work towards building a team that will be ready to compete in the Cyclone Taylor Cup,” Boyer said. The Victoria Cougars open their 2015-16 season at home on Thursday, Sept. 10 against the Kerry Park Islanders. Training camp begins on Friday from 5 to 8:15 p.m. and goes until Sunday, Sept. 6. editor@vicnews.com

Aggressive Outlander bucks the power trend WHISTLER – The Mitsubishi Outlander is Inside The Outlander competes with the a bit of an anomaly in the compact utility Nissan Rogue and Kia Sorento for market. buyers wanting a seven-passenger, While most manufacturers sell three-row compact crossover. Unlike 4-cylinder or turbocharged 4-cylinder the 4-cylinder Nissan, the Outlander versions in great number, it’s the V6 only offers seating for seven passengers equipped Outlander that is the best in the V6 models, so the Sorento is the seller here in Canada, totally against closest competitor. Overall the cabin is well years ago and it is good to see that Mitsubishi is designed and roomy especially for the first two rows moving back to a more aggressive looking utility of seats. 4-cylinder models get a useful storage area vehicle. Not all small crossovers need to look under the rear cargo floor, the space used to store the aggressive but the previous model was so devoid third row seats in V6 equipped models. of personality, it blended into the background. The Drive updated 2016 model comes with a whole new front Another reason that Canadians opted for the V6 grille treatment, front pumper, even available LED models in the previous version was the much better headlamps and tail lamps. Mitsubishi might be driving experience, something that needed, and was, accused of borrowing from the recent Lexus front improved for 2016 4-cylinder trim levels. There is design; the bold chrome accents do look similar to new acoustic glass to remove road and wind noise, the Lexus Spindle grille. Along the lower part of the more insulation between the cabin and the engine doors is a metallic trim piece that helps break up the compartment and attention paid to the continuously body. The top GT trim is the one that gets standard variable transmission (CVT). this vehicle make a run to 100km/h one second faster than the previous 4-cylinder. The 166hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engine has been carried over but the improvements made to this model have transformed this Outlander. It has gone from a rough and ready vehicle to a refined, quiet and pleasurable place to spend time. The 224hp 3.0L V6 is still the one to get if you want to tow up to 3500lbs. and the inclusion of a conventional 6-speed automatic makes driving a more predictable experience but this version felt heavier and didn’t handle nearly as well as the 4-cylinder. Verdict The 2016 Outlander starts $25,998 for a FWD 4-cylinder model. The base 4-cylinder AWD starts at $27,998. All V6 equipped Outlanders come standard with AWD and 7-passenger seating and the starting price is $31,198. The most expensive GT trim tops out at $38,498. Mitsubishi is introducing a new trim for the 2016 model year that includes a lot of the higher end features found in the V6 but offer it in a 4-cylinder model. It is the ES Touring with a power sunroof, 18-inch wheels, display audio, satellite radio and few other goodies and it starts just under $30,000. Mitsubishi hopes this model, along with the other improvements to the vehicles refinement will win new buyers over. The Outlander competes with a vast field of small utility vehicle but the 7-pasenger V6 offer is what sets it apart; that and the impressive 10-year warranty. heritage hue is stronger than ever – as the signature paint color is directly associated with high collectability and the famed “Mopar-or-no-car” legacy. Add in the widest performance range ever for the 2016 Challenger and Charger, and there hasn’t been a better time to paint the Dodge brand’s iconic muscle car arsenal in the nostalgic color. Jordan Robinson, from Sooke, is being treated for leukemia.
When 18-month-old Jordan Robinson was taken to hospital with a high fever, standard procedure was to medicate and release. Then, just two days later, after his condition hadn’t improved, doctors figured something’s up. Several MRI’s and cat-scans later, the root of all evil was revealed to be something no parent- or human being- should have to hear: acute myeloid leukemia. Upon the discovery, Jordan, along with his mother were airlifted to the BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. On gofundme.com, 39 people raised over $4,000 in just four days for Jordan’s cause, with even more support outpouring from the Sooke community. But with Jordan’s mother, Regan Currie, and his father, Jeffrey Robinson, having to take off work to be by their son’s side, the bills are tallying up. At this point in time, doctors are trying to do a bone marrow transplant and figure out how much chemo to give him, noted Jordan’s grandmother, Mary Anne Robinson. To help raise additional funds for the family’s cause, a series of events will be held every week at various locations in Sooke. A car wash was held on Sunday at Sooke Home Hardware. “We’re hoping to have a good outcome,” said Chrystal Cole, one of the organizers for the events. The following week is a boot camp at the Saseenos Elementary school field at 10 a.m. A planned bottle drive and garage sale are in the works as well. Anyone interested in supporting Jordan and his family can visit the “Baby Jordan’s fundraiser” Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/ Baby-Jordans-fundraiser/1703245019895543?fref =ts news@sookenewsmirror.com

MONDAYS
The photo is of a Sicilian Saucer tomato, weighing in at 2.25 pounds and a 6-inch diameter. Is there anyone out there who can beat that? The competition is on. Bring in your early squash, wash with vinegar and keep in a dark cool space until the Sooke Fall Fair, (September 12-13). Keep on watering and fertilizing and get those knitting needles working and cameras flashing and paintbrushes creating and write in the shade of a tree. The Building Community One Stitch at a Time quilt is now hanging at Shoppers Drug Mart. The quilt was stitched by members of the Sooke Quilting Club. Every year they donate their handmade, hand-stitched quilt to the fall fair as a fundraiser. A big thank you to Marcus Farmer for allowing us to display the quilt and hanging it for us and thanks to Jodi for co-ordinating. You may buy your $2 raffle ticket at the cosmetic counter in the store. Start checking over your animals for show and decide on your costumes for the pet parade. Only four weeks to the fair.
